Are you ready to be spooked at the “Trail of Terror?” Get your tickets for the best local volunteer haunt in the area, if you dare. The “Hall of Terror” is Jacksonville’s oldest Haunted Attraction. The Jacksonville Jaycees AKA The Jacksonville Junior Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1922. The first “Hall of Terror” was formed in 1970. It ran continuously until 2005 at many popular Jacksonville venues including Market Square Mall and Adventure Landing. Last year, a passionate group of local Jacksonville Jaycees were determined to resurrect the “Hall of Terror” in the first annual “Trail of Terror.” It was such a popular success, the Jaycees decided to continue the tradition. The trail will be on the grounds of Paintball Adventures at 11850 Camden Road. This will be an 11-night event, beginning Friday, October 7 and continuing every weekend until October 31 from 7 to 10 p.m. The Jacksonville Jaycees’“Trail of Terror” is run 100 percent by volunteers and all proceeds benefit Jaycee Projects and local organizations. The Jaycees support several local charities and organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Surfer’s for Autism, Catty Shack Ranch, Rethreaded, Rodeheavers Boys’ Ranch, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and

Geek culture, extra spicy! WasabiCon, Jacksonville’s geek and pop culture convention, comes to town October 22 – 23. Held at the Lexington Hotel & Conference Center Jacksonville Riverwalk, this two-day event is sure to delight attendees of all ages.
Fans of “Dragon Ball Z” will get the opportunity to meet the voice of Goku, Sean Schemmel. In addition, Tara Sands, the voice of Bulbasaur from the “Pokémon” cartoon, will be on hand with plans to play Pokémon GO with the attendees.
Popping onto the scene in the fall of 2012, Ryan Mulligan, local resident and co-director of WasabiCon 2016, explained, “we wanted to create an event for the local geek community. Fans usually have to drive to Atlanta or Orlando [for Dragon Con or Megacon] for an experience like this.”
Other featured talent includes the “Army of Darkness” comic book artist, Larry Watts, Cosplay Models Candy Keane and Jenna Esposito, YouTube personalities MIssFushi and Pelvic Gaming, and a variety of clubs and organizations including the 1701st Starfleet Florida Squadron, the 219th Brain Surgeons Resident Evil Cosplay Group, Extra Life Jax, GAAM, Noise Complaint, and the North Florida Ghostbusters.
From its inception, the convention focused solely on cosplay and video games, but in its fifth year, WasabiCon has grown tremendously. It now includes a variety of events celebrating anime, comics, science fiction, and so much more! There will be a Vendor’s Room featuring over 40 booths certain to please the most discerning of taste. Also returning are panels, a tabletop gaming room, workshops, and a video game room courtesy of Video Game Rescue in Jacksonville. 10

Determine Your Path & Have a Meeting Place. Explain your route to your group, including the final destination. Stay Together. Same color glow stick necklaces make identification easy. Flashlights are always a good idea. Be Mindful of Traffic. Always look both ways when crossing the road and stay on the sidewalks when possible. People do still drive on Halloween, hopefully slower. Use Face Paint, not Masks. It’s more comfortable! Also, masks can be a visual impairment, especially if the eye openings aren’t correctly positioned. Examine Treats. Toss opened candy and don’t eat homemade treats from strangers. You don’t have to eat all that candy at once! Check Props. Swords and other props should have round, flexible tips. Respect Other’s Property. A dark house is a universal sign that that particular resident is not participating. Leave it alone and go to the next house. Be Mindful of Pets. Since animals can become anxious by visitors, it’s best for their safety and others that you keep them inside. Be Mindful of Candles. Remember to blow out inside and outside candles before bed. Keep Lights On. If you’re home, keep your home well-lit for the safety of others.

Jumping Around Jax Halloween Costume Ideas Are you in need of a quick Halloween costume for your kids? Try some of these cute costume ideas. They’re affordable and easy to create! Jellyfish Dress in white. Open an umbrella and cover the top in white and the bottom in pink tissue paper. Create long streamers with Saran wrap and affix them to the umbrella. So cute! Bat
Mac-n-Cheese Wear yellow shirt and blue pants. Cover the outside of a large plastic bowl with paper printed to look like the Kraft “Easy Mac” box. Spray paint empty TP rolls yellow (or create using yellow construction paper) and attach them together and to the bowl. Attach the bucket to your shirt. Voila, you’re a savory treat! Pot of Flowers:
Dress in all brown or black. Buy felt and attach it along the inside of the sleeve and down the torso of the shirt. Cut arches in the felt to look like wings. Just don’t try to fly!

Laura Bunso Bittencourt opened Smart Body Physical Therapy to help men, women, and children have a better quality of life. She specializes in treatments for women and her philosophy is that the body is a selfhealing machine. Bittencourt specializes in treating the pelvic region and routinely sees patients for urinary leakage. It’s more common for her women, she said. “We have a lot more opportunity for trauma,” Bittencourt said, citing reasons such as procedures, degeneration of tissues and childbirth. According to the National Association for Continence, one in four women over the age of 18 experience episodes of leaking urine involuntarily.
“I love the concept that everything in your body has the power to heal,” said Bittencourt. “It’s very western medicine. We are using exercise and manual therapy to be able to direct the body to heal itself.”
“Most of them think that it is normal,” Bittencourt said. “We say here, ‘don’t confuse common with normal.’ As a culture, women just accept a lot of things.” Many of her female patients are embarrassed to admit they have difficulty with involuntary urine, but instead suffer in silence, Bittencourt said.
Physical therapy can help reduce or end urinary leakage, but the first step is seeking help, Bittencourt said. Staff at the clinic also offer education classes to the public. About 12 percent of women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during their lifetime. About three million women currently live with breast cancer and about 40,000 will die from the disease this year, according to the National Cancer Institute. Jacksonville native Allison Gubitz and her team at the American Cancer Society want to decrease that. Gubitz heads a volunteer team that organizes fundraising events for breast cancer research and prevention. For Gubitz, it’s personal. The University of North Florida graduate was in high school when she started volunteering with the American Cancer Society and received lifechanging news. “I was a team leader,” Gubitz said. “That year my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer.” After seven years as a volunteer, Gubitz began working full-time with American Cancer Society and oversees this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The event is held on Saturday morning, Oct. 22, at Hemming Park. Funding raised from the event goes directly toward cancer research, life-saving education, and patient services. “We have a five-year plan to make it a million-dollar event,” said Gubitz. “The more money we raise, the more people we will be able to serve and that’s the bottom line of why we are here.” For more information, visit MakingStrides.ACSEvents.org. october 2016 • iwantaBUZZ.com

Ronald Episcopo explained his entrance back into art as an eye-opening experience after reading the book, “Unthink” by Erick Wahl. From a young age, he was told to focus on other pursuits that could earn a living. But after the book, he returned to his passion. At the age that many start thinking about retiring, he reignited his art career.
BUZZ: What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever created?
Since 2004, Episcopo has been creating mixed medium artwork. He begins with a photograph and then adds layers of texture with paper and paint to change the original photograph. “There are stories behind the art that allows the reader to read into the piece,” said Episcopo. “Sometimes my views get exactly what I hoped to express, and then sometimes not.” Episcopo started his art career in Fort Lauderdale, winning numerous awards. Last year, he moved to Jacksonville with his husband.
Jamie Melton: “The Bus Stop” in 1991. The painting came about from a thought or idea I had of a group of people waiting at a bus stop on a cold night. After so many years, I still have the painting.
at Be the Light Music and Dance Company and I’m bringing about 30 pieces. BUZZ: What are you trying to communicate with your art? JM: I enjoy provoking thought and also beauty. Capturing a person’s imagination is something that I shoot for. BUZZ: Do you make a living off of your art?
BUZZ: Can you give us some information about your upcoming show? JM: No, I paint on the side. I’m a railroad signal engineer/designer JM: This will be my first show since by profession. 1991. It’s on October 1 from 5-7 p.m.

Lori Taylor For eight years, Lori Taylor has owned Trends Art & Home Boutique in San Marco, just south of the square along Hendricks Avenue. Trends is filled with original art, furniture, home décor, gifts, framing, and fabrics. A Jacksonville native, Taylor has loved art and decorating since her teen years. She began her career learning picture framing in the 1980’s and progressed from there to graphic design, interior design, and later into custom paintings that beautifully highlight her store and other businesses throughout the River City. Trends is her passion and she has combined her love of art with her design experience to create a boutique/gallery that offers a unique place for local popular artists to showcase their work and new artists to bloom. This morning she had a “sketch party” with nibbles and fresh juice for any level artist who wanted to get inspired and draw right there in the store. She has gorgeous items and vignettes to sketch or shop.
Trends is her passion and she has combined her love of art with her design experience. The show will be open through November 19. Plein air is when artists go on location and paint on-site. Taylor also sells a line of teas and is planning a tea party open house on November 5 from 3-5 p.m. The party will also highlight a local jewelry making artist.
Taylor often hosts Jacksonville’s chapter of Society of Mixed Media and currently has a On October 20, she will join her contest going on to see which piece customers like best. Parsons Dance is a New York City-based modern dance company, internationally renowned for creating and performing contemporary American dance of extraordinary artistry that is accessible and enriching to diverse audiences. Founded in 1985 by artistic director, David Parsons and Tony Award-winning lighting designer, Howell Binkley. David Parsons has enjoyed a remarkable career as a director, choreographer, performer, master teacher, and producer. He holds an honorary doctorate and was the first recipient of the Howard Gilman Fellowship to complete his Masters. He completed his Masters in town at Jacksonville University. Other awards include the Dance Magazine Award and the American Choreography Award. Howell Binkley is the proud co-founder of Parsons Dance for which he has designed more than 70 pieces. His Broadway designs include: Hamilton, Allegiance, After Midnight, West Side Story, Avenue Q, The Full Monty, and many more. He is a five-time Helen Hayes Award recipient and was given the 1993 Sir Laurence Olivier Award and the Canadian Dora Award for “Kiss of The Spider Woman.” Howell received the 2006 Henry Hewes Design Award, 2006 Outer Critics Circle Award and the 2006 Tony Award for “Jersey Boys.” Parsons Dance is known for its energized, athletic, ensemble work, and has collaborated with iconic artists across all disciplines. The company has toured to more than 383 cities, 35 countries, and across five continents for the most notable theaters, festivals, and presenters worldwide. Audiences have also seen Parsons Dance on PBS, Bravo, A&E, and the Discovery Channel. Parsons continues to pursue its mission to deliver positive, affirming, lifeenriching experiences to audiences worldwide by maintaining a repertory of over 75 works by David Parsons and producing his new work; inviting

established choreographers to re-stage works from the American canon on the company; and commissioning emerging choreographers with their GenerationNOW Fellowship. Parsons Dance is in residency at Thrasher-Horne Center from October 12 to 14. It is supported by the Dance Touring Initiative Grant provided by South Arts. The company’s time in the area will include a dance master class with students at La Villa, and an advance master dance class on the ThrasherHorne Center stage called the David Parsons Dance Media Event. Parsons Dance Company will also be performing a school time matinee and a fulllength performance on October 14.

Have you ever had a burrito born from the mind of a madman and served from a truck that’s decked out like a luchador’s fever dream? Well I have, and it made me a believer. I’m talking about the delicious offerings from the Sweeto Burrito truck. These aren’t your abuelita’s burritos. With stuffing ranging from panko-crusted chicken with tater tots to ground beef with bacon, Sweeto Burrito delivers diversity to the culinary landscape of Jacksonville’s food trucks. I tried their Buff Chick burrito. Like the rest of their offerings, it comes in either a middle weight (3/4lb) or heavy weight (1 1/4lb) option. Not wanting to back down from the challenge, I took on the heavy weight. She’s loaded down with boneless, crispy, panko-crusted chicken, tater tots, cheddar cheese, a cilantro ranch dressing, and the choice of either a buffalo hot sauce or a sweet hot sauce. Since I’m rather fond of my taste buds, I opted for the sweet hot sauce option. This beast of a burrito had me on the ropes most of the match, but when I finally pinned it for the 1-2-3, victory was just as sweet as that sauce. You’ll never want to tap out, except for wanting a nap afterwards. If you see this truck in a parking lot near you, give them a shot and let them powerslam some flavor into your mouth.

BUZZ: When did you find an interest in cooking? SS: When my oldest daughter left for college I was heartbroken and had to find something to do with myself. So, I went to Culinary School and here I am 30 years later. BUZZ: What sets your restaurant apart from others within your food style, and in the local area? SS: My philosophy is to make it the best it can be. BUZZ: Do you have a speciality dish that your family and friends always want you to make? SS: A steamed seafood pot cooked on top of the stove.

ARMADA FC HISTORY Since getting its first professional team in 1980, Jacksonville has cultivated a rich soccer tradition. After a restrictive stadium lease greatly affected ticket sales, the Lipton Tea Co. relocated the New England Tea Men franchise to Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Tea Men, Northeast Florida’s firstever major league-level sports team, played in the original North American Soccer League in front of crowds of 15-20,000 at the Gator Bowl from 1980-82. In 2012 at a USMNT versus Scotland friendly at EverBank Field, native Jacksonville businessman, Mark Frisch drew inspiration to bring professional soccer back to Northeast Florida. Overwhelmed by the passionate fans and exciting atmosphere, he saw the potential in continuing to grow a sport he was learning to love. In May 2013, Frisch formed the Sunshine Soccer Group with the goal of bringing a professional soccer team to Jacksonville. On July 25, 2013, the re-formed North American Soccer League awarded Jacksonville, an area that reaches five million people throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, expansion rights as the league’s then-13th team.

Motto The team’s motto is “Ex Pertinacia Victoria,” or “Victory Through Determination.” The team name was selected by the fans following an extensive four-month competition and survey where over 1,500 names were submitted. Finally, on Feb. 18, 2014, the name Jacksonville Armada FC was selected as a strong reflection of the city and region’s historic links and associations with first the Spanish, and then United States Navy. The First Coast is home to three large U.S Navy bases which employ over 100,000. The team’s colors are navy blue, royal blue, gold and white, as selected by the fans, and the team logo features a strong anchor symbolizing the organization’s strong community link and shared brand essence of “Passionate, Progressive and Determined.” More than 30 years after soccer first landed in Northeast Florida, it returned with the Jacksonville Armada FC playing in their inaugural season in February 2015. The Armada FC sailed onto the scene in February 2015, hitting the pitch for the first time and riding three first-half goals to a 3-1 win over its inaugural opponent, the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer in front of a modern-era NASL preseason record 13,934 fans at EverBank Field. In April of 2015, the Armada FC defeated 3-1 in its NASL opener in front of a modern-era record of 16,164 fans, firmly proclaiming the club’s presence and cementing its mark in Jacksonville soccer history.

4The Jags new offensive tackle is starting for the team on the left side of the offensive line. Beachum was acquired in the offseason by the Jags and missed most of the preseason recovering from a torn ACL. He was successful with the Pittsburgh Steelers for his first four NFL years.

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:
The rebirth of New Orleans’ own sludge metal band, Crowbar, is upon us. This trailblazing band never really went away, but after being on the music scene for 25 years and putting out ten full albums, they’re ready to put even more behind their name. Windstein’s goal with their newest album, “The Serpent Only Lies” is to keep that same attitude as their earlier music—the raw, angry, gritty feel—but to also bring new elements to their sound. “I went back and started listening to early Crowbar, and it’s more of that attitude, but more mature,” Windstein said in an interview with Blabbermouth. Band members include Kirk Windstein, vocalist and guitarist; Matthew Brunson, guitarist; Tommy Buckley, drummer; and Jeff Golden, bassist. Crowbar is excited to release their newest album October 28. The band is touring all over the country, playing some of their most recognizable songs as well as some new ones. Their first released single, “Falling While Rising,” is nothing shy of their heavy, sludge metal sound. In the words of Windstein, “If you continue to put out killer records, continue to kick ass onstage every night, and continue to treat your fans with respect, that’s the stuff people will remember.”

The Heavy Pets are an American rock band that blends rhythm and blues, jazz, funk, disco, and reggae with rock and roll. Called “a living, breathing, force of nature” by Relix Magazine, The Pets are known for their soulful songcraft and powerhouse live performances. Riding high on the success of their most recent studio effort, “Two Horses,” look out for The Heavy Pets as they continue to hit the road hard. The group became an instant SiriusXM radio sensation in 2007 with the release of their double-disc debut album, “Whale.” First embraced by the jam scene for their raw talent, their crossover sound that is showcased on their selftitled album, also dubbed a “Top 10 Album of 2010” by The Huffington Post, propelled them into the periphery of mainstream music. Returning to their acoustic roots on “Swim Out Past the Sun,” THP’s guitar duo set aside their electric axes for a more organic approach. The Pets followed up those polished efforts by releasing “Everywhere Sessions: Volume 1,” recorded live in the studio with accompanying videos. In 2013, The Heavy Pets launched an ongoing series of self-produced EPs with “Two Horses” and followed up with “Rags and Aces” in May of 2014, with both receiving heavy airplay on satellite radio.

What is your favorite drink at GS and why? My favorite is the Beast! I love it because it’s clean and refreshing, but also has a hint of spice from the jalapeno. Do you serve any local vino or brews? We have the San Sebastian Port and we feature Bold City Beers and Intuition Ale Works brews as well. Do you all have music or any kind of events at GS?
