Hyper-observational, colorful and self-deprecating: this is how the fiery female comedian Iliza Shlesinger describes her comedy. She feels strongly about female empowerment and her act helps men and women decipher what each other needs. Shlesinger was the first and only female comedian to win the title on “Last Comic Standing” and says “you just have to go in there, do your comedy and give it your best shot.” While she won in 2008, fans still recognize and follow her from her appearance. She says “it is humbling because people took time to watch me, vote for me and make me happy all because they like my pizza jokes.” The way men and women interact is a topic of conversation for Shlesinger’s routine. Her debut album “War Paint” reached number one on iTunes and she found the experience rewarding and gratifying. The album’s title is a “commentary on the makeup women wear to be attractive and to stand up for girls while giving guys a loving insight into why we are the way we are.” She boisterously finishes with “no, this isn’t makeup. This is war paint. Let’s make a baby, I’m coming after you!” Dating advice is also in this lady’s repertoire: “Ladies, shave your big toe and gentlemen, if you want to understand women you better come see my act.”

COMMUNITY FOCUS
The Most Interesting Person I’ve Interviewed This Month George Harrell has a vision. He sees a worldclass aquarium on the banks of the St. Johns River in downtown Jacksonville, drawing tourists from far and wide, and revitalizing the city’s waterfront.
First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross
“It’s very doable,” he says. This, despite the huge fundraising task ahead.
Harrell and his team at the local group Aqua Jax must raise $100-$125 million from private investors and corporations to make their dream a reality. The goal? to build a 150,000-square-foot aquarium on the Northbank Riverwalk between the vacant Shipyards property and Metropolitan Park.
The Jaguars Foundation Learn more on the “Foundation” page at Jaguars.com Under the leadership of Jaguars owner Shad Khan and his family, the Jaguars Foundation continues to be a national leader in professional sports philanthropy, providing more than $1 million dollars in grants this year. The Foundation continues to provide support to the community’s most vulnerable children and have broken ground in new avenues that align with NFL and team priorities to extend the team’s philanthropic reach in support of the community. Areas of support include, but are not limited to, military and veteran support, college scholarships, and many youth programs throughout the Greater Jacksonville Area. Learn more about the Jaguars Foundation’s Play 60 program and Honor Row program below.
“Aquariums have transformed other cities,” Harrell points out, “from Baltimore to Chattanooga. This is the game-changer Jacksonville needs.” Photo courtesy of Folio Weekly
Harrell is partnering with the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens on the endeavor, which was a top vote-getter at One Spark. “Just imagine boats going up and down the river between the aquarium and the zoo, as part of eco-tours we’d set up,” he says. The aquarium would not only educate visitors about our area’s diverse marine life, it would also bring people downtown. “I’m full of passion for this idea,” says Harrell. What do you think? To learn more visit www.AquaJax.net.
PLAY 60
HONOR ROWS
Designed to tackle childhood obesity, NFL PLAY 60 brings together the NFL’s longstanding commitment to health and fitness with an impressive roster of partner organizations. In addition to national outreach and online programs, NFL PLAY 60 is implemented at the grassroots level through NFL’s in-school, after-school and team-based programs. The NFL PLAY 60 initiative is prominent during the NFL’s key calendar events, including Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, Draft, Kickoff and Thanksgiving and is supported by many NFL players and coaches year round. To date, the NFL has dedicated over $200 million to youth health and wellness through NFL PLAY 60.
This unique, nationally recognized program uses seats at Jaguars home games as incentives to encourage youth to set and achieve ambitious but realistic goals. Goal setting involves academic achievement, behavioral improvement, and performing public service. Interested nonprofit agencies from within five Northeast Florida counties (i.e., Duval, Baker, Clay, Nassau, and St. Johns only) are eligible to apply. The flexibility of the program allows agencies to determine how best to use seats as motivational goals. Youth must be between the ages of 9 and 17 to earn their seat to a game. All applications are reviewed by a diverse volunteer committee.

Inspired by OneSpark and Downtown is on Fire, I seek to add to the dialogue between fellow artists and our local community by using a flame motif to represent unity. Using the juxtaposition of abstract technique and representational figures, I purpose the idea that there is balance and purpose in everyone’s differences. I hope to inspire others to find their highest potential of self-actualization. I also love to find beauty and peace through violent pallet knife strokes and chaotic organization of shapes while relying on the color structure to portray the overall message. Every single piece of my art is inspired by a different moment of my process of self realization and the commonalities that are shared across humanity.”
ason John is an assistant professor of painting in UNF’s Art and Design Department and one of eight painters from across the country to be featured in “Get Real: New American Painting,” now at MOCA Jacksonville. John believes that teaching influences his art more than anything else. “You’re constantly telling students they have to push themselves and answer to their work. I always have to go back to my studio and follow my own advice.” And if he doesn’t? “My students will call me on it,” he said. “It makes me think about what it is to be an artist.”

“The Red Line”: Interview with Joshua McTiernan “It was a talk the famous theater director John Tiffany gave at the Radcliffe Institute called ‘Can We Keep Up: Theater’s Incredible Ability to Evolve’ that really reignited in me a fire for all J os hu a K AN e r the incredible means by which w e is No Oc M Play ve to Ti e m be rn by be r 3 theater can convey a feeling, an r6 0 , 7 , 31 ,8 a character, and a story to an audience. This play contains strong language and adult situations that are not suitable for children
BUZZ: Does “The Red Line” mix naturalistic and non-naturalistic elements? JM: Most of the plays I write (and the theatrical experiences I am drawn to) are not what you would call strict realism (and certainly not naturalism). I’m always driven to heighten the
theatrical experience by adding in magical or dreamlike sequences, time jumps, elements of the absurd, moments of surprise, or breaks in the fourth wall. For
every new play I write I set myself a challenge. With “The Red Line” that challenge was character: can I change the way you view people drastically enough that the snap judgments you made about everyone in the beginning of the play can slyly and subtly be turned throughout the rest of the experience. Can I, as Suli Holum (from the Pig Iron Theatre Company) so eloquently puts
it, “play an audience like a fiddle,” changing from moment to moment their conception of who these people are, keeping them in a state wherein they must constantly challenge the assumptions they hold. Though naturalism certainly has it’s own merits (Anne Baker, who won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for her 3 hour epic “The Flick”, is a shining example of that form in American theater today), I prefer an experience that has a little something unexpected peppered into it every now and then. Isn’t that a truer reflection of life?
BUZZ: Does “The Red Line” simply present a situation or does it have a message? JM: One type of play I think never works is “The Message Play.” Sure, they do wonders at church festivals or when crusading for a cause, but they hold a very specific niche in the theatrical world. The problem with “Message Plays” is that every character, every contrived plotline, every thematic nod is slowly and irreducibly moving towards that one moment when everyone involved looks at the audience and says, “You get it?” So much is sacrificed to ensure “The Message” gets across that you can hardly call it compelling theater, and you certainly can’t call it masterful playwriting. That isn’t to say that plays cannot and should not have messages. I think every playwright has a message they are, at some unconscious level, trying to give. They certainly have a point of view on whatever subject they are writing about. But what interests a playwright the most is the infinitely complex relationships that exist between flawed people in a world they cannot control: the brittle connections they make with one another; the savage battles they wage for power or for the truth; the things they annihilate and the sadness that they bear alone or together. A playwright would do better to spend his
time investigating these things than in trying to concoct a message and preach it to his or her audience. Themes have a
wonderful way of exposing themselves conflict arises and is resolved (or isn’t). A playwright who focuses solely on “His Message” loses touch with his characters’ humanity. In that regard, “The Red Line” doesn’t seek to drill a message into its audience. Instead, it focuses on who these people are and why they do the insane things they do. The audience is certainly smart enough (if they want) to sift a message out of that.
BUZZ: What are the play’s subject and theme? How is the theme developed? Through dialogue? action? symbols? JM: “The Red Line” follows three friends on a Chicago rooftop during an inauspicious day. Artie Morawski is certain that his girlfriend, Penn, is cheating on him. Armed with an arsenal of drugs, the goading of his friend Sy, and a few cans of spray paint, Artie decides to be the first to strike and in a very public forum. Meanwhile Artie’s long-suffering roommate, Connor, tries to thwart Artie’s plans and set everything to rights before what is done can no longer be undone. The play
itself juggles a lot of themes: unrequited love, the failure of communication in a society relying on third parties (Facebook, texting, etc.), and the brittle nature of modern romance. It’s at once an
elegy for what we sacrifice for speed; a desperate plea from one lonely heart to another; and a fastpaced hyper-kinetic comedy. To purchase tickets call (904)249-0289 or log onto PlayersByTheSea.org

wild new comedy
“the r ed line”
As Jacksonville’s top-rated community theatre, noted for innovation and risk-taking, Players by the Sea considers it a vital part of their mission to present new work by local playwrights. The Studio Stage is the natural home for the world premiere of Joshua Kreis McTiernan’s “The Red Line,” October 31 through November 8. McTiernan’s first play “The Creationists,” a comedic mix of pop culture and classical literature, successfully debuted there in February 2011. He directed the award-winning cult hit “Bug” there in 2012 and has been a sought-after “play doctor” on many Players’ productions. McTiernan is a keen observer of the absurdities of modern life. In “The Red Line,” he reminds us that lovers’ misunderstandings may be temporary, but Facebook is forever. After taking a wicked cocktail of speed and vodka, Artie Molleno is convinced that his girlfriend is cheating on him. Determined to strike first, Artie and his old drug-dealing friend Sy hatch a scheme to publicly shame her. Can Connor, Artie’s long-suffering roommate, stop him before disaster strikes? Friendship, Facebook, and physics collide on a rooftop in Chicago in this hyper-kinetic look at the breakdown and break-ups of modern relationships. The comedy is directed by Juan Unzueta, with Ricky Watson as Artie, Derrick Routier as Connor, Franklin Ritch as Sy, and Leanne Gullo as Artie’s girlfriend Penn. One is hopelessly in love, one is on the verge of building an empire, one is high on drugs, and one just wants to know what is going on! The Scenic Designer for this appealing and inventive comedy is Vinny Mraz. Performances are October 31, November 1, 6, 7, 8 at 8 p.m. General admission is $23; seniors/students/military $20. Thursday Student Night offers half price admission with valid student ID. For information and tickets, call (904)249-0289 or log onto www.PlayersByTheSea.org.

“When you hear it is a British comedy, you might think the play will be a little stuffy and highbrow,” said Director J. C. Wells. “It’s not. The show is glorious trash.” The story revolves around Francis, who takes two jobs working as a servant to two different bosses. He tries to keep the two apart in order to keep his jobs. But what he doesn’t know about them, and what they don’t know about each other, quickly becomes a case of mistaken identities and slapstick chaos. The ensemble cast features approximately a dozen actors who will use improvisational comedy elements to literally draw audience members into the absurdity and mischief. “It’s a wonderfully funny show,” Wells said.

Carving Out Some Good Times with WJCT! By Robin Warren, WJCT Education Outreach Coordinator
Curious George’s Spook-tacular adventures begin on WJCT-TV Monday, October 27, @ 8 a.m. (WJCT–TV 7.1 (Comcast 8 & 440)). Credit: Courtesy of CG: ® & © 2013 Universal Studios and/or HMH. All Rights Reserved.
From the candy to the costumes, Halloween is a fun-filled time for kids and parents alike. But it can pose dangers to young revelers. To help make this year’s festivity a trick-free treat, WJCT has these simple safety tips: Adorning Your Little Goblins • Choose a light-colored costume as these are easily seen at night. Add reflective or glowin-the-dark tape to the front and back of the costume and to the trick-or-treat bag. • Avoid oversized and high-heeled shoes that could cause kids to trip. Make sure the rest of the costume fits well as this will help prevent trips and falls. Trouble-Free Trick-or-Treating • Give kids flashlights with new batteries. Kids may also enjoy wearing glow sticks as bracelets or necklaces. • When your kids get home, check all treats to make sure they’re sealed. Throw out candy with
torn packages or holes in the packages, spoiled items, and any homemade treats that haven’t been made by someone you know. • Make sure trick-or-treaters will be safe when visiting your home, too. Remove anything that could cause kids to trip or fall on your walkway or lawn. Make sure the lights are on outside your house and light the walkway to your door, if possible. Keep family pets away from trickor-treaters, even if they seem harmless to you. Gobbling Down Ghoulish Goodies • Offer a filling meal before your kids head out to trick-or-treat so they won’t scarf down too much of their haul. • Consider purchasing Halloween treats other than candy. Stickers, erasers, crayons, pencils, coloring books, and sealed packages of raisins and dried fruits are excellent alternatives. Happy Harvest! We know not all families celebrate Halloween with costumes and trick-or treating, WJCT has you all covered as well. • Throughout the month of October, WJCTTV features an array of exciting Halloween programming, including a one-hour special, “Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest,” airing on Monday, October 27 @ 8 a.m., with encore presentations of this “spook-tacular” Halloween special throughout the week. • Plan a party instead of trick-or-treating as a Halloween celebration, either in your own home or at a local community space. Enlist parents of other kids and each take charge of creating one activity to spread out the work and expense. Instead of trick or treating outside, kids can go around to various areas in the room to do a game and get a treat. Until next month!

Swimming Safari: Joani Maskell 4775 Windsor Commons Ct. • SwimmingSafari.com
“A study from Melbourne, Australia, In 2011, reported on not only the physical benefits of early swim lessons but also of the intellectual benefit of early swim lessons.. Scientists determined, children who were taught to swim by 5 years of age, had statistically higher IQs because of their early sensory/motor stimulation in the water. Scientific studies have shown participation in swim class helps to strengthen a child’s self-confidence” -Joani Maskell
BUZZ: What age should you introduce your child to the water? JM: As early as you can! Babies live in fluid for 9 months before they are born
so immediately upon coming out of the womb, they are very comfortable in water. It’s almost a natural habitat for them. We encourage our parents to enjoy the water with their infants in the bathtub or pouring water over their
head, or even just floating in a beautiful pool. We start our “Splish-Splash Babies Class” at 6 months of age. This is a fun class where we teach parents how to work with their child in the water.
BUZZ: Are there common misconceptions people have about learning how to swim? JM: Parents ask us all the time, “How many lessons will it take for my child to learn to swim and be safe?”
There is definitely a misconception that there is a certain magical number of lessons and their child will be safe and proficient. The truth is no one is ever “safe,” in the water. Once you learn to swim, you are “safer,” but never totally “safe.” There are many layers involved such as where you are swimming, ocean, lake, or pool. Who you are swimming with? By yourself, with others, are lifeguards around? How long or how far are you swimming? What are the weather conditions? The term of being “safer” rather than “safe” has never hit me harder, than when my own son, was swimming in the ocean with some of his high school friends. At the time he was a 6 ft. athletic, working, lifeguard, who got caught in an undertow and was thrown to the bottom of the ocean,
where he received a spinal cord injury. He was paralyzed for more than 2 months, but thankfully, did recover. Ever since then, I try to explain to everyone that swim lessons are just part of the story. They are just part of the “layers” you need to stay safe.
BUZZ: Do the swimming instructors go through particular training? JM: Yes, definitely. This is just one of the things that is strongest about our
program. Our instructors have training for more than 30 hours, in the water as well as out of the water. They are required to pass various certifications to be able to teach with us. All of our instructors have earned their CPR and first aid certifications. Many of our instructors are Life Guard certified, WSI certified and even earned advanced certification to work with special needs children. Continual training is very important in Swimming Safari. We attend trainings throughout the United States yearly, as well as bring professional trainers in to work with our staff. We have a staff that is committed to excellence and what we are doing. This can be seen by our low turnover rate. We don’t just offer swim lessons; we offer an experience to last a lifetime. This is what we call “The Swimming Safari Experience.”

How Good Food Should Taste
Indochine
Menu saMple
What: Indochine
Article by Monica Stouder & Photos by Monica Lea Imagery
Sweet and spicy is a superb combination – and local Thai food franchise Indochine has got this combo down to one zentastic science! Parking was easy after 6 p.m. in this delicious Downtown location. Next door to Indochine’s building there is a lot that is available to the public after that timeframe. Within a chopsticks click I was up the stairs to suite 200 (Above Burrito Gallery) where Indochine’s perfectly spiced Thai-inspired plates of noodles, rice’s and other Wok’d-up noshables awaited. The atmosphere here is a cool blend of industrial-meets-World Market. With gorgeous brick interior and dark woods, there is an abrupt feeling of casual, yet calming ambiance – perfect prep for placating one’s palate! Service was immediate just after the 6’oclock hour and my server Andrea was still in an amicable, perky state - even after working a double shift. (Kudos to Indochine by the way for making smart choices on superb staffing if this gal is any indication of the level of care taken by all of their servers). I digress… After explaining that everything down to the sauces was house-made here, my smiling server provided some insight on some appetizer options (as there are around 11 to choose from). So after a few short minutes, 2 piping-hot Crispy Rolls landed on my table. These little beauties were chock full of pork, noodles and veg. They had a wonderful little kick that was easily amplified with some of the sweet chili Thai sauce that accompanied this dish. I also ordered what I thought was going to be a modest portion of Tom-Kha Gai soup and was delighted at the small trough that joined my awesome appetizer on the table. This rich coconut broth was loaded with good stuff such as onion, mushroom and chicken and yes, yet again had a playful spice factor that complimented this bowl of liquid gold without shocking the taste buds into submission.
Each entrée is made to order and hungry patrons choose which proteins to add at a certain price point. $13 for veggies, tofu and chicken and $15 for beef, shrimp and scallops. You also choose your spice level on a scale of 1 – 6, 6 being Thai-hot. Additionally, you can order your entrée and your server will bring the spice rack for you to add in your own level of heat. Just a note… be very, very careful with the homemade pepper oil as getting even a small anointment on the exterior of your lip can be…well, enlightening. I ordered the Prik Pow and found the level of sweet to spice was just the perfect balance and off-setting this dish with rice made for the perfect portion size as well at dinner.
Soup: Tom-Kha Gai – huge portion of pipin’—hot soup made with lemongrass, coconut milk, chicken, galangal, mushrooms, onion and baby corn for $7.00.
Dessert of Mango Purple Sticky Rice was a really unexpected treat. This unassuming looking dish was not overly sweet and with a texture that was truly appealing to the palate. Really, really good stuff!
Entrée: Prik Pow - bowl of onion,
peppers, mushrooms and veggies in a semi-sweet basil sauce served with rice. Protein additives of scallops and shrimp only $15.00.
Overall, I was impressed with the service, bricky and bold atmosphere, menu choices, fresh and house-made items and ultimately the balance of flavor of Indochine’s food. I recommend a least one visit to this sweet and spicy spot. But bring some friends who likes to sample and then share your dishes – because with food this tasty you’re going to want to try it all!
BUZZworthy Note: While there is no happy hour here, the prices are not bad on a good selection of wines and sake. Additionally, signature, Asian-themed drinks running from a modest $7 - $11 are creative. Ty Ku-Tini made with Tyku Liquer, Buddhas Hand Citron, Club Soda and a squeeze of lemon could easily bring the Zen. Or try a Blushing Emperor made with cherry liqueur or a Red Lotus created with Lychee liqueur to warm your insides prior to some Drunken Noodle indulgence. And don’t forget that Indochine has broken kitchen hours. Mon.-Sat., 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Lunch, then open again from 5 p.m. to 9:30/10 p.m. and closed on Sundays. And don’t forget you can find Indochine in San Marco as well!
Dessert: Mango Purple Sticky Rice – bed of purple sticky rice covered in thin slices of fresh mango and lovingly drizzled with an amazing coconut cream sauce for $6.00.

Ordering up front makes for an expedited lunch, but this is definitely not fast food fare. I ordered a Medium sized Ginger Teriyaki Tofu Burrito with a side of coleslaw and my cohort imbibed in the Paul’s Extreme Nachos with steak. Overall the staff here is fun, young and enthusiastic about the ownership and offerings. Plus the artistic atmosphere adds to the great vibe here. I am not sure when Happy Hour is, but with a good craft selection here there is no doubt that after an hour sud-lovers will definitely find their Happy regardless of price point.

GETTING BAMBOO-ZLED
When Executive Chef, Dennis Chan was a kid, he learned to love the restaurant business by hanging out in his grandfather’s restaurant— Eng’s Golden Dragon Restaurant on Beach Boulevard. We can only suppose that it was there that the ideas for his present-day restaurant and stunning cookbook, “Hip Asian Comfort Food,” were nurtured as he watched his family work hard to make their restaurants successful. Chan is a graduate of Englewood High School, who also studied at the University of Florida and the CIA (Culinary Institute of America). He has created in his own restaurant a unique and most satisfying dining experience in an elegant space not far from where his grandfather’s business once stood. When my husband Hardy and I went to The Blue Bamboo at 3820 Southside Boulevard, we knew that the food would be good. Many of our friends had said that they loved the place, so we expected to be pleased with our experience. Instead, we were wowed! The bright, airy dining room was beautifully appointed. Black lacquer barstools stood like sentinels at the bar. Each table
had a white tablecloth and cloth napkins, and stunning creations of local artists decorated almost every wall. Then, there was the food! Starting with the Dragon Whiskers appetizer and moving to our entrees of Big Katsu Chicken Sandwich and Ahi Tuna Salad, everything was delicious Bambu Luau advertisement in the Southern Bell and surprisingly cool. Of course, there have been other places in Jacksonville that offered unique and exciting dinner experiences. Bambu Luau, for one, was open in the 60s and 70s, and it offered a little piece of a Polynesian paradise at 3488 Blanding Boulevard. By Jacksonville standards, Bambu Luau was quite the exotic place.
It is so nice to know that Jacksonville has provided and continues to provide new and exciting taste experiences to a hungry public, and places like Blue Bamboo and Bambu Luau have and do give us those special dinner moments we greatly enjoy and remember fondly!

Mega Adoption Events Bringing National Attention to Jacksonville Jacksonville is known for a few things, but what residents may not know is that Jacksonville is a leader in animal welfare. The collaboration amongst shelters and other organizations has made Jacksonville a better place for animals – and people are noticing. A focus on large-scale Mega Adoption events has brought national recognition to Jacksonville. First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP) is one of the nonprofits leading the way toward Jacksonville becoming – and staying – a no-kill community. FCNMHP hosts and funds the 3-day Mega Adoption events, which include several local shelters and rescues. More than a thousand puppies, kittens, dogs and cats are brought to the Jacksonville Fairgrounds and up to 10,000 potential adopters attend each event, hoping to find their perfect pet.
“You are safe with me and we will be best friends forever,” said one little girl as she brought her new dog home from the last Mega Adoption. These words are priceless to the ears of animal welfare workers and pet lovers all over Northeast Florida. The most recent Mega Adoption event saved the lives of 1,167 dogs and cats – the largest adoption event in the nation! These events are a crucial piece of the puzzle to maintaining Jacksonville’s no-kill status, which means 90% or more of the animals that enter local shelters leave alive. Jacksonville has attained this difficult goal since January of 2014, but animal advocates will tell you it is a constant battle. The Mega Adoption events bring new adopters and much-needed attention to shelter pets and give shelters breathing room so they are not forced to euthanize for space. Since FCNMHP started its programs in 2002, euthanasia rates in local shelters have been reduced from more than 23,000 animals dying each year to less than 2,000. FCNMHP consults with organizations and non-profits across the country to replicate the Mega Adoption events and other programs that have made such a difference for homeless pets here in Jacksonville. Groups all over the nation have seen the progress Jacksonville has made and the unique collaborative approach that sets Jacksonville apart. This approach is not always easy, but it is what works to save the lives of thousands of dogs and cats each year. FCNMHP also offers plenty of services for local pet owners and pets in need, from free and low-cost spay/neuter services, initiatives to help keep pets with their families and out of shelters, and enrichment and training programs for pets in local shelters.
You can adopt a dog or cat at the upcoming Mega Adoption event October 10-12 at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. The adoption fee is just $20 and all pets are spayed/neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. You can find more information at FCNMHP.org. october 2014 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

Inheriting the road-warrior mantle left behind by the Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic has established a devout grassroots following on the strength of constant touring and a loose, rootsy brand of Southern rock infused with jazz and blues textures. The group’s origins date to 1982, when vocalist John Bell and guitarist Mike Houser first began playing together while attending college in Athens, Georgia. When bassist Dave Schools left academia to join the duo the next year, Widespread Panic was officially born.
The Blues have arrived in Jacksonville. Make sure you are here to witness this phenomenal group. Singing the old school blues that takes you back in time! THIS WILD LIFE
Turn it UP
“I thought I was one of the rebels in the drum line.” -Kevin Jordan
Bands to be on the lookout for
STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso knew the punk rock rulebook backwards and forwards. The duo behind This Wild Life grew up doing exactly what’s expected of kids growing up in the tightknit DIY scene in Long Beach – avoiding MTV and the radio, attending punk shows at Chain Reaction, the ear gauges, the tattoos. And of course, they started their own pop-punk band. They played fast, they played loud and they didn’t stand out from the crowd until they did the least “punk” thing possible. It was also bolder than anything in the punk rock rulebook: they got quiet. Having just completed a successful, first run in the UK, This Wild Life is taking the songs of Clouded on the 2014 Warped Tour, where they’ll play alongside peers and heroes such as The Story So Far, Yellowcard and Real Friends. Newly signed to legendary punk label Epitaph, they’re now within the lineage of the kind of uncompromising bands they grew up listening to. Because even if This Wild Life doesn’t sound like hardcore punk, they make accessible, honest music that speaks to the kind of kids they were growing up – “bands that can play softer music, but tour with heavier bands…that’s how we view ourselves.”
CATCH THEM LIVE AT:October 24th at 1904 Music Hall WEBSITE: ThisWildLifeBand.com
TREVOR HALL STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Trevor Hall realized at a very young age that music was more than just a passion. As an eleven year old, playing harmonica beside his father in the cradle of the weeping willows of South Carolina, music quickly became his most intimate companion, guide and creative outlet. In his elementary years, he began to write his own songs and perform them locally. At sixteen he recorded his first record, and the following year he left South Carolina to study classical guitar at Idyllwild Arts Academy, an international boarding school east of Los Angeles. There, Trevor was introduced to yoga and certain spiritual practices found in India, which greatly influenced his music and his life journey. During his senior year, Trevor signed a record deal with Geffen Records and his career as a musician formally began.
SOKOLINSKI
Trevor Hall’s music – an eclectic mix of acoustic rock, reggae and Sanskrit chanting – echo with the names and teachings of divinities, while maintaining an incredibly and refreshingly universal message. While on the road, Trevor sees the stage as his moving temple, a place where he can share in the experience of his spiritual journey with his audience. Trevor’s annual trips to India also continue to serve as a source of creativity and motivation for his music. The precious lessons and experiences that he has harvested from his journeys East have moved Trevor to return a service to those whom have colored his music and his life so beautifully. Trevor uses donations collected at his live shows to help support an ashram in Allahabad, India, the home of his Guru, where underprivileged and orphaned boys and girls are given the chance at a better life and a traditional Vedic education.
STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: CATCH THEM LIVE AT: October 12th at Freebird Live Sokolinski was born in Bordeaux, France. She has used the nickname Soko as long as she can remember. Sokolinski left home at 16, quit school and moved to Paris to start acting class with Eva St. Paul where she studied for one year; she then resumed her education at several different schools, but quickly became tired of it and dropped out. She later appeared in several French films and began to write songs.
As a live performer, she is unpredictable and never uses a set list; her backing band consists mostly of different friendmusicians at each show. She sometimes plays up to 3 hours by herself, in intimate and quiet venues. Her début album- entitled I Thought I Was An Alien was released in February 2012 following the singles “I Thought I Was An Alien” and “First Love Never Die.” In 2014, Soko’s song “We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow,” from the 2012 album, was featured in the viral video “First Kiss,” which has garnered over 63 million views and debuted at number 9 in the Billboard Hot 100. Her second Studio Album “My Dreams Dictate My Reality” is set to be released sometime in 2014.

LAWLESS HEARTS “Instead of doing a full album of 10-15 songs we want to give something more, something with meaning. We are releasing three EP’s to be taken more as a book trilogy; ergo each EP will have 4-5 songs that chronologically will tell an entire story.” –Lawless Hearts
STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:
With Lawless Hearts, Innovation is needed more than imitation. Our dream is not stay in the past with our music, but bring forth together our classic and new age appreciation to make something completely our own. Something wholly satisfying with diverse styles reminiscent of Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Foofighters, The Black Crowes, Led Zeppelin, and so on; so you get an eclectically awesome sound. We firmly believe you can’t dream without hope, and you can’t hope for something without dreaming up something bigger than yourself. After all a song always starts with an idea, a moment of clarity in all the chaos. And we want to be that moment of clarity for everyone.

GAME FACE
BRENT MARTINEAU
Local Athletes of Jacksonville JESSIE LIPTROT
Sports Director at
Fletcher High School<Mulitple Positions
Jessie Liptrot is a do Mr. Everything on the Fletcher football team. Offense, defense, and special teams - you name it - Liptrot has an impact on the game. In a game against rival Sandalwood, Liptrot had three interceptions and two of them were returned for touchdowns. He also added two more touchdowns on the offensive side of the football. Liptrot is yet to commit to play college football, but the senior will have some options.
LUKE BOWANKO
Jaguars<Center
The Jacksonville Jaguars rookie center is a sixth round draft pick out of Virginia. Bowanko impressed the coaching staff in the preseason and was inserted into the starting role in week three against the Indianapolis Colts. Bowanko started the preseason at least third on the depth chart, but has vaulted into the starting position. The center is an avid Baltimore Orioles fan so he is pleased with the A.L. East Champs in 2014.
KADE BELL
JU<Quarterback
We know the name Kerwin Bell around here very well. The former Gators quarterback and current JU head football coach hopes you know his son’s name by season’s end. Kade is a junior qb for the Dolphins. In 2013, he led the Pioneer League in total offense and was third in the league with 25 touchdowns. Kade played his high school football at Providence and Fleming Island.
JUSTIN NICOLINO
Suns<Pitcher
Justin Nicolino helped lead the Jacksonville Suns to another Southern League Championship in 2014. The left-hander was sensational on the mound for the Suns all season long. He was named the Southern League pitcher of the year and the minor league pitcher of the year for the Marlins organization. Nicolino boasted a 2.85 ERA in 170 innings of work. You’ll see him in the big leagues soon.
THE PLAY BY PLAY
WITH COLE PEPPER
FORMER JAGUARS TRAINER NOW ON NATIONAL TV
Mike Ryan
Mike Ryan (on twitter @PFTCAT) was the only head athletic trainer the Jaguars ever had until he retired from the NFL after 26 season last year. Now, he has begun appearing on Pro Football Talk on NBC Sports Network as the expert on injuries in the NFL, appearing on the show two or three times a week. Cole Pepper sat down with Ryan to learn more about his new role.
CP: How did this get started? MR: I was approached by NBC Sports and asked if it was something that I would be interested in. Obviously, it was. We created a position of being a sports medicine/athletic training consultant for Pro Football Talk.
CP: What do they ask you about? MR: Injuries, medical issues. A lot of it is describing certain injuries, how much down time is a player expected to
have with a particular injury and what is the course of action to get that player back on the field.
CP: With the explosion of fantasy football, fans want to know “when is my guy going to be back?” Are you aware of that aspect of it as you report on these injuries? MR: I’ve never played fantasy football, but it has always interested me as far as the number of people who play
it. I don’t necessarily look at it from a fantasy point of view, but I do try to give information about an injury to a player on a fan’s team. There are timeframes and details about injuries, I know that a lot of people can apply that to fantasy football and that’s exciting.
CP: You do these reports via satellite from a studio with a backdrop of downtown Jacksonville behind you. So Jacksonville is getting some attention every time you go on the show. MR: Which is good. This is where my home is. My and family love it here. Nothing wrong with giving Duval County a little pub!

Mountain Biking…in Florida? Let’s face it, Florida doesn’t have any mountains. So how can we mountain bike? A picturesque rocky outcropping is fun to fling ourselves off of, but there are other ways to challenge yourself and wear out those knobby tires. While a rock garden would be a nice way to test our bike handling skills, the real challenge is conditioning. Trail-riding is the cross fit of the cycling world, working your core, upper body, and legs into a sweet burn. Truth be told, the longest and hardest day of cycling I ever experienced was the two hours of trail-riding with friends one wonderful Thanksgiving Day. Without a hill or mountain in sight, I figured this would be a breeze! I’m fit, my heart, lungs, and legs were strong, how hard could this be? Within fifteen minutes, my legs burned and I realized that the trial was beating me. Only a few months earlier, I had ridden a double century with some climbs over 3000 feet, yet I didn’t hurt this much! What was wrong?! I felt like my life force was draining out of my heels, onto the trail. My arms and legs were like noodles and we had only gone 5 miles! Time and distance had no meaning here, I was exhausted and could only wonder if I would survive long enough to get back to the car…and civilization. My friends had pulled over to wait for me, one chuckled, ”Well roadie what do you think?” I blinked the sweat out of my eyes and wondered if he actually said anything because of the blood pounding in my ears. “Love it” I grunted. Oddly, I was not lying, nature has a way of pushing us, improving us, testing us, evolving us. After the initial shock of the burn, I found the rush of energy to be intoxicating. A great place in Jacksonville for trail-riding is Hanna Park, near Mayport. It is close, there is ample parking, and the trails are forgiving on beginners and a great workout for experienced riders. At the trail heads you are reminded that your are in a park, but when you are deep in the forest surrounded by nature and all you see is the trail and all you hear is some creature (bug, panther, gator) your imagination can really run away, far far away. Dr. Steven J. Lallis, MD I have knee pain and have been told that joint replacement is my only option. Is there another option? Joint Preservation is a method of restoring joint function using state-of-the-art, minimally invasive techniques that maintain the most functioning bone and cartilage as possible. Some patients are able to maintain all of their cartilage, others the vast majority of their cartilage, allowing for shorter recovery times, less pain and fewer complications. Joint replacement surgery has been around for decades; however, more recent techniques of joint resurfacing, partial joint replacement and cartilage transplantation have since been developed. Many orthopedic surgeons can replace a knee, hip or shoulder joint; but not as many have been trained to expertly use these minimally invasive techniques. Only with a surgeon who has been trained in all of the techniques of joint preservation surgery, can you have the option to keep more of your own cartilage. Inspiration and excitement as “Jesus Christ Superstar” opens the new Players by the Sea season! Players by the Sea begins its 49th season with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s thrilling rock musical “Jesus Christ Superstar,” opens on the Main Stage. The story of Jesus’ last days is retold through the disillusioned eyes of his betrayer Judas. As Jesus struggles with the human and divine sides of his identity against a backdrop of politics, betrayal and the devouring perils of celebrity, he is alternately exalted and let down by his disciples, followed unconditionally only by the devoted Mary Magdalene. This high-energy rock opera debuted on Broadway in 1971. Originally considered controversial for its sympathetic interpretation of Judas and its depiction of Jesus as a man with fears and frailties, the show has since been widely performed and embraced. The most recent Broadway revival was in 2012, based on the visually spectacular Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival production. The show is directed and choreographed by Ron Shreve, fulltime PBTS Production Director, with Jocelyn Geronimo as co-choreographer. Noted percussionist and PBTS veteran Greg Hersey is the Music Director. Jesus is played by Alejandro Rodriguez, director of this summer’s blockbuster hit “Rent.” David Lee Redding plays Judas, with Sadie LaManna as Mary Magdalene, Rob Banks as Pontius Pilate and Daniel Austin as King Herod. The featured cast includes Hector Gonzalez, Ryan Arroyo and Jeff Springman. Ensemble performers include Amanda Faye, Lauren Albert, Jessica Hayden, Ashley Yarham, Ashley Augustyniak, Leslie Richart, Alix Bond, David Scott, Eric Yarham and Noah Bennett.

INSIDE LOOK
Can you give us a brief history of the SMT? Built in 1938 by a
nationally recognized architect - Roy Benjamin (who also built the beautiful Florida Theatre). Benjamin had to keep up with current trends dropped the Moorish, Spanish and Italianate designs and converted to Art Deco when designing the San Marco Theatre. Painter Davis Cone felt compelled to paint the theatre and include it in his book “POPCORN PALACES.” Not only is this theatre featured in his book, but it was recognized by USA Today as one of ten best classic cinemas in the USA.
Have you been in this kind of industry prior to owning the San Marco? While this is my first foray (and last I am bit long of tooth) into the movie business, I have enjoyed my tenure.
What makes SMT so unique? Hopefully, the pictures will give you
a feel of what makes the San Marco unique. It is not just the tables and expanded menu, the sense of neighborhood has been vital to its success. And, unlike the normal fare you would receive at your local Multi-plex, the San Marco provides you with freshly made food to be appropriately paired with some great beer and wine.

hile the rich history of the San Marco Theatre is steeped in red carpet ideals and popcorn popping voyeurs, there is no denying that this amazing San Maro staple is one of a kind. We spoke to owner, and cinematic savant, David Blue to get the reel deal regarding this iconic spot for the silver screen.
Article by Monica Stouder and Photos by David Fisher
How many years have you owned the SMT? Sue and I took over the business 16 years ago and worked passionately to help renovate the interior to reflect the thematic elements of the architecture. What were your favorite San Marco elements to restore?
The renovations were very much a hands on project. They entailed me climbing scaffolding up to the ceiling, which I assure you I would no longer do. A considerable effort was put into bringing out the “art deco” elements and generally refurbishing what had been neglected thru the years. Historical buildings generally have a good ghost story. Does the SMT have any shareable supernatural encounters? While I have been approached by the paranormal community to set up and “monitor” the theatre overnight, I have declined.
Best part of owning SMT? The best part of the owning the theatre is the constant change of movies, some that very much resonate with an audience and some that don’t. I have been very fortunate to have a large and very loyal following.

I did not take the breath test, can I still be accused of DUI? Yes, the state can prove DUI in two ways. The first is that your breath or blood alcohol level was above 0.08 and the second is that your normal faculties were impaired. So, even if you refused, they could still try to show that you were too intoxicated to drive based on Field Sobriety Exercises and other observation the officer made at the scene.

What effect will DUI conviction have on my insurance? One of the real penalties for a Florida DUI conviction is the increased car insurance premiums. They could double or triple. Since February 2, 2008, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (“DHSMV”) requires a new financial responsibility certification (under Section 316.193, Florida Statutes). This is what is called the Florida FR-44 Form. You will be required to maintain it for three years.

JACKSONVILLE HAS PLAYED HOST TO AWARD-WINNING ACTORS AND DIRECTORS Due in part to its versatility, Jacksonville has starred in many big-budget films over the years. In 2004, Jacksonville welcomed award-winning actors and producers while the city was used as a backdrop for a major motion picture. Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme filmed the ending sequence of the 2004 remake of “The Manchurian Candidate” here in the River City. Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington shot scenes at both Huguenot Memorial Park and Fort George Island. “The Manchurian Candidate” is a thriller film based on the 1959 novel by Richard Condon, and is a reimagining of the previous 1962 film. In the film, Washington plays Bennett Marco, a tenacious soldier. Liev Schreiber is Raymond Shaw, a U.S. Representative from New York, who is manipulated into becoming a vice-presidential candidate. Jon Voight plays Tom Jordan, a U.S. Senator and challenger for vice president. Meryl Streep takes the role of Eleanor Prentiss Shaw, another senator and the manipulative, ruthless mother of Shaw. Demme is also known for “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991) and “Philadelphia” (1993). Washington co-starred in such productions as “The Pelican Brief” (1993), “Philadelphia” (1993), “Crimson Tide” (1995), “The Preacher’s Wife” (1996) and “Courage Under Fire” (1996). His work in critically-acclaimed films, including “Malcolm X” (1992) and “The Hurricane” (1999), garnered him Oscar nominations for Best Actor. He finally won that statuette in 2002 for his lead role in “Training Day” (2001).

JACKSONVILLE SPORTS TAVERN Interview by Monica Stouder
ROGUE HAZELNUT BROWN NECTAR ALE FLOURLESS WHITE CHOCOLATE TORTE WITH CARAMEL SAUCE Hazelnuts roasting on an open fire….. Wait. That’s not how the song goes. But since were turning things upside down with the Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar Ale, why not? This tasty delight has hints of brown sugar with the hazelnut, and VERY easy to drink. With the beautiful taste of this beer, I didn’t want to do the usual chocolate hazelnut recipe, so we went white chocolate and flourless! And, oh, the caramel sauce! To die for! My first beer caramel sauce - shazam!!! Which is what you’ll be saying after you make this recipe.
TORTE INGREDIENTS • 1 stick unsalted butter • 12 oz. good quality white chocolate • 6 eggs, at room temperature • 1 1/2 cups sugar • 1/2 cup almond flour
• pinch kosher salt • 2 Tbsp. Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar Ale • 1/4 tsp. vanilla • Powdered sugar for dusting
CARAMEL SAUCE INGREDIENTS • 12 oz. Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar Ale • 6 cardamom pods • 2 Tbsp. butter

Sourcing Suds
Brew Time By Marc Wisdom
By Brian Little
Football is in the air and along as is the ubiquitous tailgate party that is as much a tradition as the game itself. In parking lots surrounding football stadiums both professional and college around the country tents are popped-up, grilles are lit, folding tables are deployed and side dishes are spread. The aroma of delicious grilled meats fills the air along with the sound of raucous parties. Along with those parties and good times comes a plethora of coolers filled with cold brews. Some are packed with fizzy yellow mega brews, but others are done right with refreshing, flavorful craft beers. Here in Jacksonville, when the Jaguars play at Everbank Field, it is not uncommon to find many of the local brewery’s beers represented at tailgate parties. As a craft beer community, Jacksonville now boasts 12 craft breweries or brew pubs with the recent addition of Veterans United Craft Brewery. Most of those breweries are represented at local grocery and liquor stores in cans and bottles or offer growlers – glass containers that are filled at the brewery’s tap room for off-premises consumption. Bold City Brewing Company, the granddaddy of craft breweries in Jacksonville, goes so far as to open on Sunday mornings for the sole purpose of filling growlers for football fans. Thirty gridiron revelers can swing by Bold City on their way to the stadium to fill their quart or gallon growlers between 10 a.m. and 12 noon every Sunday morning. If a new growler is needed, one can be purchased at the brewery. New quart growlers are $10 with a fill and can be refilled for just $5. New gallon growlers cost either $20 or $25 depending on the beer chosen to fill it and can be refilled for either $15 or $20. Growlers can also be filled at most of the other breweries in the area, but a little pre-planning is in order since most are not open on Sunday mornings. If growlers are not your thing, several local breweries sell their beers in cans that are available at local grocery and liquor stores. Intuition Ale Works has the distinction of being the first craft brewery in the state of Florida to offer their beers in cans. Ben Davis, owner and head brewer at Intuition saw early on that cans were the perfect container for beer. Cans do not allow beer-destroying light

or oxygen in and are more recyclable than bottles. In addition, they cool down faster and can be crushed to take up less space when empty. Intuition’s People’s Pale Ale, I-10 IPA and Jon Boat Coastal Ale are available in stores around town. Their King Street Stout is also canned, but is only available for purchase at the brewery taproom. Other local brews in cans include Engine 15’s Nut Sack Imperial Brown Ale; Bold City’s Mad Manatee IPA, Duke’s Cold Nose Brown Ale and Killer Whale Cream Ale and Green Room’s Pablo Beach Pale Ale. No matter which local brew you stock your tailgating cooler with, one thing is certain; drinking great local craft beer shows your enthusiasm for Jacksonville’s exploding beer culture. Couple that enthusiasm with fanaticism for the Jaguars, and you have a winning combination that even the mightiest of pigskin foes cannot defeat. GOLDEN TAP BEER OF THE MONTH Oskar Blues Brewery Ten Fidy is a deceptively good stout that matches chocolate and coffee flavors in an expertly-brewed, blackas-night, decadently rich beer. It is a sin to drink this gm from its can; it simply begs to be poured, thick and creamy, into a pint glass. Enjoy this 10.5% brew with a hearty fall stew or gumbo. Marc Wisdom can often be found wandering rom tailgate party to tailgate party on game day looking for the best stocked cooler. Listen for his shouts of joy when he finds one. Source VETERANS UNITED CRAFT BREWERY There’s a new brewery in town! Veterans United Craft Brewery opened its doors in August with a huge celebration filled with music, food trucks, and, of course, plenty of beer! Founder and former Naval Flight Officer, Ron Gamble, was on hand during their grand opening night, and was even giving free tours to those who came out to support. At the time of the grand opening, there were three different VU brews being served in the taproom and around the city. That number has already expanded with more set for release soon! Veterans United will unveil a special Mug Club on September 20th. For $60, patrons can be a part of the inaugural Mug Club, which will include benefits like a personalized mug for the taproom with discounted pours, a first-edition t-shirt, and invitations to exclusive events from the brewery. For more information, go to www.VUBrew.com/Brewery.
Suds HOPBANSHEE IPA Hopbanshee is their flagship IPA and a beer that I found myself really enjoying during my visit. This is an approachable IPA and one that I think will become a crowd-pleaser. At only 66 IBUs, this can be considered a mild IPA by modern standards. Notes: Strong hop aroma, Citrus flavors balanced by a malt sweetness. Clean and refreshing finish. Mild and drinkable. Veterans United Craft Brewery is located at 8999 Western Way #104 Jacksonville, FL 32256. The taproom is open Wednesday-Sunday. Order a pint while you’re there or a growler to go! Be sure to connect with them on Facebook (/ VUBrew) and Twitter (@VUBrew). To see more from the Beer Apostle, visit TheBeerApostle.com.

of applying substances to one’s face in order to improve the appearance dates back at least as far as 6,000 BC. In ancient Babylonia, women applied live flies to their cheeks, fastening them with a rhubarb and lamb’s-blood paste. Researchers believe that this was not actually considered an appealing look, but rather that the practice was due to a stone engraver’s typo in a makeover guide. Two millennia later, the Greeks used fruit bat dung on their eyelashes and fingernails. This was particularly common during the Trojan war, having been used by soldiers to keep their enemies from approaching within a sword’s length of them. Today, make-up is rarely used for everyday primping but is mostly applied to cover the results of cosmetic surgery accidents.

Why do monks take a vow of silence? - L. Ellen Seattle, WA
Professor Dubious Says: Contrary
to popular belief, monks take no vow of silence. Monks lead a secluded life, giving them little to discuss. Monks have simply had nothing to say to each other for over 450 years.
Football Etiquette Well, the season has been ticking along now. I must confess: I’m not a fan. Never have been. But I figured I’d have to write a little about the etiquette eventually. Not for the players but for the fans. And since I’m not a fan myself, I had to conduct a little research. What I found appalled me. A quick search on the internet, a few phone calls to some friends, and a night of asking questions at my monthly poker game. Now I know everything, and I can’t help thinking football fans (the kind who buy season tickets) are just a little bit nutty. 1 - Be in your seat by kickoff. Really? You care that much about when a person gets to their seats? I know the view gets blocked for a few seconds, but exactly how important is that 1 minute while you have to crane your neck to one side or another? I even hear people complaining because the fans are tailgating instead of filling seats. As if the football team (or the stadium, or the owners, or anyone else) is going to have their feelings hurt. The team is making money and you get a little more room. Chill. 2 - Don’t leave until the game’s over. Is it just me or is that a little too close to mom saying “Don’t leave the church until the last song is over.” Also—see the above.
3 - Don’t stand for every play. Is there a certain number of plays a person should stand for, or is it the play itself that merits a stand? I really don’t know. 4 - Don’t sit down and then complain when the people in front of you stand. Maybe you could make up your mind. 5 - Don’t yell and holler so much when the home team is on offence. The reason given—so that the team can hear the plays and concentrate. I don’t know if the players can really hear that much from the stands or not—even in college football. But you’d think they’d have figured out how to get around this problem by now. 6 - Don’t analyze every single play just so you can sound smart in front of everyone. I don’t think I’ve met a football fan who doesn’t sincerely believe that he should be coaching his favorite team instead of that nincompoop who’s getting paid to. In fact, I have never heard a ‘football discussion’ that didn’t contain over-analysis. Even when they guys are crowded around the TV watching it. Although, maybe it’s different at a live game. I couldn’t say. But it’s obvious that the actual coach is an idiot. 7 - Don’t be a potty mouth. Okay... I can see this one. There are families present. 8 - Limit your alcohol intake. Limit it to what exactly? Maybe I just don’t get it. Maybe these etiquette rules make perfect sense. And maybe I’d be the same way if I cared.

October Horoscope Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire
Aries (March 21- April 19)
It’s going to be a lonely month Aries. So, while you are wallowing in your own dysfunctional love, learn how to cook. Who doesn’t want to hook-up with someone who knows how to make a great meal? That’s right, everyone does. Get to the kitchen!
Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
Libra (September 23 – October 22)
Blah. Blah. Blah. That’s all your mate hears. Quit talking all the time! My God, all your stories aren’t really that important. You only live once, but you talk all the time.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)
With the Sun in Virgo, the first half of the month is perfect for love, so take advantage. The back half of the month, well let’s just say I’d rather listen to Ashley Simpson sing than be you in the back-end of October. It’s that bad.
I’m going to cut to the chase. None of this Saturn is in Virgo so you will get lucky this month crap. You want to find someone, clean your act up. Be social. Communicate. Be rememberable & not clingy or creepy. Try less pathetic and more “I wish that person would come around more often.”
Gemini (May 21 – June 21)
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)
It’s time you take your chances on one of those online look-at-me relationship Web sites. If you don’t have one and you’re feeling lonely, buy a clue and sign-up for some inter-web love. They damn near guarantee you will find someone faster than what you are currently pulling down.
Cancer (June 22 – July 22)
Something is in your eighth house of intimacy. I wish it was some hot crush of yours, but currently it’s Mars. Doesn’t mean you can’t make it that crush. But while it’s Mars, odds are you’re in a great month to strike up conversation and see where it leads.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)
Love isn’t in the air, but revenge is. I’m not saying to do anything rash this month, but we know which little cartoon character on your shoulder is talking louder. It’s not the one with the halo. It’s the one with the horns.
According to a source, it’s time you became more passionate. Don’t worry about the source because they’re untrustworthy. Concentrate on the passionate part. You have desires and why not show them? It’s the 21 century. People won’t think anything of it regardless how weird it is.
Leo (July 23 – August 22)
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)
Virgo (August 23 – September 22)
Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
You can’t live life in reverse Benjamin Button. Yes your ex was fun, but bat-crazy, bad with money, and had an issue with toilet seats. You can’t just remember the good things, otherwise you would be with them and upset, instead of lonely like you are. Time to move on.
The best stories are the ones with surprise endings. Well this month, your novel is playing out the same way. Just when you gave up hope and thought doom was near, it’s not. Because this isn’t a book. It’s real life. And this month you’re still not going to find love. No surprise here.
Life will reflect your favorite song this month. If it’s an “I’m feeling sorry for myself” ditty, then it’s a sad month. Some new upbeat kicking song, then good things are rolling your way. Then again, if you can’t get that Maroon 5 song out of your head, it means you listen to bad music.
Heed the brilliance of Mitch Hedberg. “Why is a dog always in the push-up position?” Why are you always making things difficult for yourself? It’s called common sense because it’s obvious to everyone else. It’s time you figure it out.
