the most interesting person i’ve interviewed this month

She’s a showbiz icon, and this month, she’s live on stage in Jacksonville! In 1973, Morgan Fairchild made her Alhambra Dinner Theatre debut opposite Arte Johnson in The Seven Year Itch. Now she’s back at the Alhambra for a new show, starring as Lexie in Dixie Swim Club. It’s the story of five southern women. One of America’s best-known actresses, Morgan first gained fame as Constance Weldon Carlyle in Flamingo Road (Golden Globe Best Actress nomination), was followed by Racine in Paper Dolls, Jordan Roberts in Falcon Crest and she originated the role of Jenna Wade on Dallas. She broke ground playing Sandra Bernhardt’s lesbian lover on Roseanne, and an appearance on Murphy Brown earned her an Emmy® nomination.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

nonprofit leaders in our community

I wanted to start a new design on community development by building quality, affordable housing. In the same instance, I used the building of those houses as an opportunity to create jobs. Our success has been remarkable. We have been able to reduce recidivism. Being able to build a picture of what hope looks like is very important to us.”

KEVIN GAY

OPERATION NEW HOPE | OPERATIONNEWHOPE.ORG

CEO and Founder of Operation New Hope Kevin Gay started the organization in 1999 with a vision of revitalizing and remodeling communities throughout Jacksonville. What began as a project to provide affordable housing, became a platform to reduce recidivism and give ex-offenders a shot at leading a fulfilling and productive life after incarceration. ONH has revamped community service into a new avenue; welcoming exoffenders and giving them insight on the value of channeling negative past experiences into service among their communities, families and themselves.

Go see her in Dixie Swim Club! Tickets at AlhambraJax.com.

The Operation New Hope Boutique offers clothing, hygiene products and more to ex-offenders who are in need.

How to Handle Your Child’s Stress About Timesharing The Bulger Firm

TheBulgerFirm.com It’s increasingly common for children of divorce to live between two homes as shared parental responsibility and equal timesharing (visitation). While these arrangements provide the benefit of meaningful relationships with both parents to children, they can also result in increased stress, as children may feel they are living out of a suitcase. Children may struggle with feeling out of place, and the lack of permanency can negatively affect the relationships with their step or half siblings, as well as with their parents. It’s important for a child to know that they are a valued and respected member of both households, and not merely a visitor.

As an avid outdoorsman, he attempts to capture nature at his most defining moments. lights, camera, jacksonville! By Jax Film Office

Congratulations to Jacksonville’s Warren Skeels, Co-Creator and Executive Producer and Lawrence Najem of Law Firm Ossi & Najem, Legal Counsel and Executive Producer of the new MTV Series “Siesta Key”. The series was filmed in and around Siesta Key, Florida. Duane A. Sikes Productions wrapped principal photography for its short film Ortega River Rats on June 26, 2017. The 20-minute film was written by Jacksonville resident and Writers Guild of America member Sharon Y. Cobb who will take the short to the 2017 American Film Market in Los Angeles to make a deal for a feature. The film’s story is based on Executive Producer Sikes’ idea of Ortega neighborhood kids searching for treasure of the 1930s gangster Machine Gun Kelly who reportedly hid out in Jacksonville.

The Thrasher-Horne Center is kicking off its 14th Season on September 30th with an appearance by the Purple One himself! In honor of the memory of one of the greatest performers of our generation, the center is proud to welcome a band that celebrates the universally celebrated catalog of Prince Rogers Nelson. The Purple Xperience is a five-piece tribute band hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota. They have been touring around the country since their inception in 2011 bringing the memories of Prince and The Revolution to audiences of all generations. The Purple Xperience embodies the spirit and sounds of Prince, with front-man Marshall Charloff channeling the vocals and movements of the icon himself. It is a show that is considered by many to be the greatest, most authentic Prince tribute show in the world. For one night only, fans will be able to relive the magic and memories of some of the greatest hit songs of the past forty years, performed live by a band that includes two former members of the New Power Generation, Prince’s protégé group. Marshall Charloff himself has written for and recorded with the Commodores, and joined Prince himself in the studio to record the album 94 East. This will undoubtedly be an event that is not to be missed, a rare opportunity to experience the songs of a musical legend live on stage, for one final time. Hot on the heels of a near-sellout performance during his last stop at the Thrasher-Horne Center, Bill Engvall is bringing a brand new act to Northeast Florida in October. The star is stopping again at the Thrasher-Horne Center Main Stage for one of only three performances in Florida. This will be the only North Florida/ South Georgia stop of Bill’s new tour. He will be debuting material from his latest stand-up comedy album, Just Sell Him for Parts. Bill Engvall is a Grammy nominated, multi-platinum selling recording artist and one of the top comedians in the country. Most recently, Bill was a contestant on season 17 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, and as a fan favorite, he made it to the finals. Earlier this year, Bill lent his voice to the animated comedy series Bounty Hunters, which aired on CMT. He previously starred in, and executive produced, the TBS sitcom The Bill Engvall Show. Bill was part of the enormously successful Blue Collar Comedy concert films, which sold over 9 million units and received a Grammy nomination. He also starred on the WB’s hit sketch comedy show Blue Collar TV and in several solo specials for Comedy Central. Don’t miss your chance to see this funnyman live on stage, October 14th, only at the Thrasher-Horne Center. Tickets are available by visiting THcenter.org or calling (904) 276-6815. art Gallery of Death By Ed Malesky

It seems that Halloween is one of our most popular holidays and that has certainly been confirmed by the Jacksonville artist community. BUZZ Media contacted The Art Center cooperative last month to see if they would like to help in the creation of a spooky art gallery as one of the attractions at the Haunted Brewery at Anheuser-Busch that they were producing. The Art Center worked with BUZZ Media a few years ago leading a public art project that resulted in over 70 BUZZ distribution boxes painted by local artists. It was a natural fit we were thrilled to participate in. Our goal this time was to get 40 artists to submit scary and gruesome paintings, prints and photographs that will be displayed in the Art Gallery of Death at the Haunted Brewery. Our first job was to contact all the artists we knew and explain the project. It was clear right from the beginning that nearly all the artists contacted thought this was going to be a fun project. BUZZ is supporting the artists by offering help with supplies, both print and TV marketing support and significant prize money. Surprisingly, some of the less enthused artists got right with the program and provided some terrifying work they created. One of our senior, quite elegant female members had paintings ready to go, including the Haunted Castle and Frankenstein’s bride. Others started right away on new works. Once images of some of the first submissions got around, there seemed to be a bit of an internal competition to see who could come up with the scariest and most creative entries. The submissions were really hitting the mark. For some time I had a good number of paintings in my living room giving me a pretty disconcerting vibe. That was the same when the entries were delivered to BUZZ where they were amazed at how well the artists had hit the mark. Be sure to come to the Haunted Brewery at Anheuser Busch, check out the Art Gallery of Death and vote for your favorite.

Visit TheHauntedBrewery.com for more info.

Jerrod Brown By Olivia West

Jerrod Brown, a local Jacksonville artist gone international, has an amazing talent when it comes to painting depictions of legendary characters from classic movies. The self- taught artist has done extraordinary work such as painting murals in Japan to painting specialty pieces for celebrities. However, his passion is handcrafting paintings in the horror genre. Brown previously worked painting the sets in various theme parks, then moved on to doing individual paintings for customers who would ask for special requests. When asked why he paints in the horror genre he said, “as a kid, I loved 16

the horror industry… It’s my passion.” Brown also loves painting, in general, because it relaxes him and it makes him confident when he’s able to sell his work. Recently Brown had the pleasure of selling five pieces of his work to the agent of Millie Bobby Brown, the young actress from the hit show Stranger Things. One painting in particular depicts her character, Eleven, which is a definite must see! If you would like to see Brown’s original work for yourself, check out his website southpawcreation.wix.com/horror-artist.

Sushi Bites - Take 2 pieces of bread, remove the crust and flatten with a rolling pin. Then, mix 3 tablespoons of cream cheese with 1.5 tablespoons of sour cream and spread on bread. Cut carrots, zucchini or bell peppers into matchsticks about 6 inches long and place on bread. Roll and cut bread into bite sized “sushi” pieces. Yum! Pizza Crackers – Top Triscuits with marinara, cheese and topping of your choice and broil for a few minutes. Topping could be pepperoni or even broccoli or olives. So good! Choco-Banana Pops – Peel and cut bananas into bites. Insert toothpick or popsicle stick (depending on how large or small your bites are). Place on parchment paper on a sheet pan and freeze for 5-10 minutes. Meanwhile, melt 1 cup of chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl in 10 minute intervals until melted. Dip bananas in chocolate to coat. Add sprinkles. Freeze to harden. You can eat these for up to three days. Easy!

CUISINE

Personal Chef

JONATHAN DWEELE Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens CummerMuseum.org

everything from other chefs. I do believe it’s easier now not to have a style. I think social media has contributed to this movement of chefs developing their techniques.

By Anna Heise

Chefs often cook in unusual settings; such is the case with Chef Jonathan Dwelle Executive Chef at Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. Tell us a little bit about yourself? I was born in Jacksonville but raised in Keystone Heights. I moved back to Jacksonville sixteen years ago. I attended school in Gainesville, then spent some time in South Georgia. My first job was in a small pizza shop in Keystone Heights. I did not work in kitchens again until I moved back to Jacksonville, where I cooked at Casa Dora downtown. After that, I moved to Mossfire Grill where I stayed for 13 years. That is where I really “cut my chops” and had the opportunity to step up.

Do you have a signature dish or a favorite dish you enjoy cooking? I love oxtail and cook it all the time. I play around with developing new dishes. How do you come up with ideas for the dishes in your restaurant? We are in the process of developing new recipes for our Tapas Tuesday menu. I am not great about conceptualizing dishes; I have to go into the pantry to see what is available, then smell or taste each item and see what will work to make a fantastic meal. It’s a puzzle and great fun to create new dishes. What do you most love about your job?

How about your culinary training? I have no formal culinary training; working in kitchens is how I learned. How long have you been cooking professionally? I have been cooking for about 15 to 16 years. What inspires you? What is your philosophy when it comes to food and your restaurant? Where did you train to cook? I am a huge fan of art and had a vision of owning a gallery at one time. Then I realized I could express myself through my food, and that pushed me in different directions. Food starts out as a trade, but once you have the opportunity to create the ideas in your head and express that on a plate to share with people, it becomes an entirely different experience. How would you explain your style of cooking?

Mezze Platter

I don’t think I have a style. I do not come from traditional culinary training and have learned

Lobster and Shrimp Salad

If you weren’t cooking, what would you do for a living? It would have to be something outdoors. I don’t know, a park ranger or a tour guide on the river. When I am off, my time is spent outdoors. I grew up in the woods and I miss it. Tell us something about yourself that people would be surprised to know. On a road trip, we found a quilt museum and I had to stop in and look. Well, I fell in love with a piece that was very dark and macabre; not your grandmother’s quilt. Well, I just had to have this, so now I am a quilt collector.

Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste Roy’s Restaurant was founded in 1988 by Roy Yamaguchi. Roy’s originated in Hawaii which inspired its Hawaiian, Asian-fusion mixture of foods to come together into what Roy’s Restaurant is today. There are still many Roy’s locations in Hawaii, but the restaurant has spread to California, Dallas, Chicago, Florida and several other states. The Florida coast makes for a great area for Roy’s Restaurants. All of Roy’s fish goes from boat-to-table, transported fresh to each location to get that special coastal connection. Enjoy the highest quality meats in Roy’s sushi rolls, hand-held options like sandwiches and appetizers, and steaks and cod. Roy’s newest addition to the menu will be featured during Aloha Hour. Enjoy great appetizers like Szechuan Spiced Pork Ribs, Hawaiian Tuna & Salmon Poke or Blistered Shishito Peppers at the Jacksonville Beach location. 24

A museum is a fascinating place. Along with the beautiful gardens, it set the backdrop for our food. I take my breaks in the garden. The fact that we are in a museum presents challenges; the kitchen is tiny, no open flames are allowed, so we use alternative methods. The problems are real, and I love it.

Food Truck Foodies

MANNY’S CUBAN FOOD TRUCK

by Shelton Buchanan

If you grew up in Florida, like I did, you have a deep appreciation for authentic Cuban food. I spent a week every summer of my youth down in the Keys on Marathon fishing with my family, chowing down on the sandwiches and Cuban ice cream from a tiny, hole in the wall shop called ChiChi’s. Twenty some-odd years later, I have yet to find a sandwich that elicits the same sensation in my mouth that ChiChi’s did all those years ago. Until now. Manny’s is one of the newer trucks on the scene, but you can tell the chef has been cooking up these delicious morsels for quite a long time. His menu isn’t huge, no food truck’s is, but he offers up the classics and does them with style. Three sandwich offerings (San’wiche Cubano, Kaman’Awana Slider, & the Sloppy Jose) and 3 platters (Plato Cubano, Picadillo Plate, and a Two Meat Platter) make up the bulk of their menu. Today I opted for their San’wiche with a side of Maduros (that’s sweet plantains for those of you who can’t habla.) Now normally, when I’ve needed a fix for a good Cuban sandwich, I instead lean towards a Media Noche which is the same ingredients but on a sweet Cuban bread. Manny’s used to make their own version of a Media Noche, but they say it oddly didn’t have a high demand. This is most likely due to the fact that people were unfamiliar with this type of sandwich and chose the Cubano they’d heard of instead. Manny’s San’wiche doesn’t disappoint though, pairing succulent mojo-roasted pork with tasty ham, pickles, mustard, and Swiss cheese on a light and flaky Cuban bread. The maduros are the perfect complement to the sandwich, as caramelized sweet plantains melt in your mouth with each bite. So if you’re searching for a taste of Havana, or even little Havana for those not up for the 90 mile boat trip, swing by Manny’s Cuban Food Truck and see if you can resist the urge to mambo after trying one of his incredible sandwiches. Oh, and if you need a little pick me up, maybe try a shot of Cuban coffee to liven up your day.

ALLISON KRAUSS & DAVID GRAY -by Jenna Martinez

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

On the heels of her latest effort “Windy City, “bluegrass crooner Alison Krauss is on the road with folk veteran David Grey. The fall tour will start in Pennsylvania and conclude in California. Both artists boast resumes spanning over twenty years. A native of Illinois, Krauss began her musical career singing in local folk festivals where she met the members of what would eventually become Union Station. Her career highlights include earning an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music and earning twenty-seven Grammy awards. She is the most decorated female artist in Grammy history. Her signature pensive soprano and tales of forlorn love have made her a fan favorite and major influence among many female musicians today. When White Ladder was released in 1998, it became one of the top selling albums in David Gray’s native Britain. Babylon, it’s first single is still a radio staple on classic stations in the United States. His career has had its share of peaks and valleys. The follow up to White Ladder, A New Day to Midnight failed to garner the praise or album sales of its predecessor. In 2014, he released his latest effort Mutineers. Gray has released twenty-six singles to date and has his latest record is scheduled to come out in 2018. This tour will be one of the best of this fall’s most sought after music offerings.

STRIKE UP A CHORD By Jenna Martinez MJ BAKER WILL MAKE YOU FEEL SOMETHIN’ Sept. 30 Whiskey Jax You’ve seen her sing the national anthem at your local Jumbo Shrimp games or at one of her many performances throughout the First Coast. Now you need to listen to her record. MJ Baker’s aptly titled Feel Somethin’ spills like an unlocked diary. She will remind you of the private joy you feel when you are thinking of your unrequited beloved as they float in your dreams. Anchored by MJ’s soothing and strong vocals, this album is vulnerably raw but, also triumphant. Mixing neo-soul, folk and jazz, this is a perfect summer banger. Just make sure you have the tissues handy. The album starts with the title track, a straight call out to the unfortunate staleness in popular music today. She name checks Hall & Oates and Nirvana on the same song. Spoken word abounds on this album providing interludes and transitions. Often the confessional style of MJ’s delivery recalls the musings of “ He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat) “. If you don’t know that one, you better ask somebody. Enjoy the ethereal “ Midnight Dreamin’ ” and the albums optimistic closer “ Forgiven ”. Catch MJ Baker performing live throughout Jacksonville including Duval Divas September 30th at Whiskey Jax Beaches. Her album is available on Soundcloud, CD Baby, Tidal and iTunes.

• 1.5 oz. Manifest Gin • 1 oz. Aperol • Splash of Lemon Juice • Splash of house made Strawberry Shrub Shake over rocks vigorously then strain and fill the glass with crushed ice. The method is done partly for presentation and partly due to the shrub holding up fairly well so it will dilute without altering the flavor. Top with more ice and some Ginger Beer. Dress with Orange Slice.

What is unique about your bar area? What is unique is there are not many bars downtown. We factor in the area itself and the clientele. With a lack of restaurants or shops, the majority of our clients are business people who come in for lunch or come back for happy hour and snacks in the evening. It’s unique in the right way, it feels like we are alone, but we realize we are a destination spot. When is Happy Hour? Right now we are hosting Happy Hour Tuesday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. We feature draft wine, discounts on beers plus we have a sizeable cocktail section with good prices. What compliments do you hear most often from your customers? Over the past few months, we’ve heard how many people like the look of the space, and how pristine the surroundings are. Customers also tell us they are happy with the variety of food and beverage offerings. There is something for everyone on the menu.

NIGHTLIFE EVENTS

Tell us about your best-selling drink? The most popular drink on the cocktail menu would be the Mexican Cook Out or The Undisclosed. They are at opposite ends; both have a citrus flavor with one being a little smoother and sweeter to drink, the other has a somewhat smoky punch to it. Do you serve any local liquors or beers? Yes, we serve beer from at least 4 or 5 local breweries, Intuition, Bold City, Veteran United, Cigar City and Aardwolf on draft plus we also carry canned beers. As far as liquor, we have spirits from Manifest and St Augustine Distilleries What do you want more people to know about your business? That we are here, and it is an excellent destination for happy hour drinks and eats. There is something for everybody; we have a nice variety of drink and food offerings. We have TV and a private dining room for parties or business meetings. Plans to open for dinner later in the month are currently in the works.

SEPTEMBER HOROSCOPE

by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

ARIES (MARCH 21- APRIL 19) A spicy month is in store for you, Aries! The Sun is in Leo, your fifth house of fertility, which means…you guessed it, who cares! It’s a spicy month. Quit holding yourself back from that true romance (if it exists). Let your hair down, and go to town.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20) Mars is visiting Scorpio, your partnership sign. If the sizzle’s gone out of your relationship due to busy schedules and the usual daily distractions (lame excuse), this is the perfect time to bring back the much loved “long lunch” afternoon delight. Bon appétit! GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 21)

BEER BUZZED

You’ve ruled the romantic scene for quite some time now, and that continues… I’m just kidding. You should know better. You haven’t ruled anything worth talking about. “There was that time I ruled the dance floor at the junior high dance.” Not quite. By Linda Johnson

What a year it’s been for Wicked Barley Brewing Company! The brewpub on the banks of Goodby’s Creek opened last July after building the brewery from the ground up. Although the tap room served all guest beers when it opened, the brewery’s own house beers and mead made their way to the menu and are now consistently available. Earlier in the year, Wicked Barley took home the medal for Best Brewpub at the Best Florida Beer Championships, along with several individual medals for beer and mead. Just last month, the brewery held its first bottle release, the Isolated Incident Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout. On Saturday, July 29, Wicked Barley celebrated its first anniversary with an all-day party and its second bottle release.

CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 22) With Aquarius full moon in your intimate eighth house, you’re in for some big changes. That’s either, “oh no!” or, “oh yay!” Either way, look for indubious changes coming your way in the relationship world. Maybe it’s a baby, or maybe a break-up. Maybe both. Fun times.

LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22) Daydreaming of your soul mate is getting you nowhere this month. Your desire to get swept away (which never happens) is pathetic, child stuff. When is the last time anyone, and I mean anyone, literally was swept up by a soul mate? Cartoons don’t count.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22) With your birthday in the very near, it would seem your luck would be improving. Get that eharmony profile up and going. Even if it doesn’t get you anyone (as expected), at least you got to play around on that world wide web thingy.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22) A house of passion and romance apparently has a moon in it this month, and that means things are looking good for you. You’re hot, sizzling, on fire, blazing, recalescent. You get the picture. Let’s go burn down some bridges! SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21) I was reading these Tarot Cards, and it seems you will be vulnerable, compassionate and sensitive this month. I could be wrong. For all I know, it means you need to buy goat, meet an eight-armed demigod, and drink from a golden chalice for eternal bliss. Where does one buy a goat these days?

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21) Coupled Sagittarians are in for a good month with their mate. With romantic Venus spending a long cycle in Gemini, you and are your partner are seeing eye-to-eye. For those single Sagittarians, I’m sorry. It’s not looking too good for you. CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19) A competitor horoscope (I was doing research) said to throw a costume theme party to help you get over an ex. Seriously, that’s advice? Yes, when I’m getting over an ex, I want to dress up and play make-believe, just so I can be disappointed again when the night is over. Dumb.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18) Seems like you are still harboring doubts for the one you’re with or the one you have a crush on. If this rings true, then end it. You shouldn’t need a horoscope to help you realize this. Go find that friend who always agrees with you and tell them you need to break it off with your mate. They are your friend and will second the notion with you. Thus, giving you the additional courage you require.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20) This month your love life will be a labyrinth. I know you don’t get it, so let me explain. With so many wrong turns and dead ends, you may have to go back to where you started to find an ending. I hope that helps. Oh, and David Bowie.
