WELCOME from Festival Director Andy Currums
Hello everyone and welcome to the ninth International Youth Arts Festival. Every year the team at Creative Youth and I have the honour and privilege of working with some of the greatest young talent from around the world. The applications that pass across our desks during the programming process and finally make their way to the stage in July are thrilling, challenging, inspiring and inventive. And the youthful talents we work with extend much further than that onstage, of course - the technicians, designers, marketeers, Project Managers, Front of House, Box Office staff, photographers, reviewers and Press Team are all made up of dedicated and driven young people. We hope one day that IYAF will be a festival for young people - run by young people.
“... THRILLING, CHALLENGING INSPIRING AND INVENTIVE.”
In the interim, us youthless bunch will continue to do what we can to build a platform for a new generation of talent and remind audiences that youth arts is not amateur arts. We must remember that some of the most powerful, pertinent and essential works throughout history have been created by young people. I believe it is the duty of every artist, audience member and facilitator to support, champion and celebrate new voices. With this in mind and with over 200 events to choose from in the following pages, my only piece of advice would be this – take a chance. Attend the show that sounds the oddest. See the act you've never heard of. Indulge in the medium the most distant from your own tastes. You never know what you might find, and it might just change everything. I hope you enjoy and I look forward to seeing you around the festival.
Andy
Cheers,

TYO Presents Scheherazade Rose Theatre Main House Sun 16th July – 18:30
The Thames Youth Orchestra (TYO) will be joined by acclaimed artist, James Mayhew, bringing Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade to life with live storytelling, narration and illustration. Join the ensemble on a journey through the Arabian nights, with stories of royalty, magic and sailors, in an event that promises to be full of excitement. The orchestra has performed at Cadogan Hall, The Barbican Centre and on the BBC. The younger training orchestra, Thames Youth Sinfonia, will also showcase some accompanying pieces.
XAS' music chronicles the artist's sonic journey and evolution. A live performance with a modern, fast-paced and electric tone ready to shake your soul. Using original compositions, they are broken down to simple elements which he then re-arranges and samples according to the vibe and sound preference of the crowd. His song 'Crossroads' received the first prize in the 'John Lennon International Song Writing Contest' (New York, 2015) and last year XAS was selected as one of the best young conceptual artist in the UK by UKYA. The Craft Table is a performance installation that exposes the creative process of artisan making. Two performers spend three days in a public space creating items including bread, beer and chocolate, live at their table, selling these items on when finished. With each item sold, information about the economic and labour process involved is passed on to the consumer, weaving together the fictional narrative of the 'craft' and 'quality' of the item and the real economics behind its production. My Generation Rose Theatre Café
Fri 7th July - Sun 16th July An exhibition celebrating and exploring masterworks made by young people throughout history and across the world. From child prodigy Stevie Wonder to Marvel Superhero and Kingston local Tom Holland, My Generation reminds the audience that youth art is not amateur art. By looking back to the greats of the past and looking forward to tomorrow’s stars, My Generation is a cheering recognition of young artists across mediums, time and the world.
The work created here has been created especially for the festival to demonstrate the art form of model making. It is usual for a theatre designer to present their ideas for a performance in model form, at a scale of 1:25 (25 times smaller than it’s life-size equivalent). Emma has selected scenes from well known fairy tales and presented them at 1:25 in a display of her industry craft and artistic talent. The fantastical element of these stories lends itself to the creation of highly imaginative models, which have been placed specifically so that they become a part of their environment. FREE All day
