“What artists do is look at the impossible and make it possible”. Theodore S. Berger, Executive Director, New York Foundation for the Arts

Directors Note 2015 Trevor Blackman Festival / Artistic Director

Welcome to IYAF 2015 as we now celebrate our 7th year with an exciting new look that reflects the evolving and innovative youth arts sector – the individuals, companies and artists from the UK and around the world. This year #IYAF2015 is taking over not only the interiors of our host venues here in Kingston but also the streets of Kingston. And because we have been overloaded with some great productions this year, we decided like good arty people to share some. This year IYAF stretches as far as Elmbridge as we begin our annual cross-festival programming. Oh yes we’ve been busy.

Biography is a new strand to IYAF and is a platform that celebrates and recognises key individuals who are part of the creative industry behind the scenes, plus up front and centre! Key individuals such as Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy (BBE), writer & director Mo Ali (Shank & Montana) and international visual artist Sarah Güsten-Marr (who has kindly agreed to exhibit two of her works throughout the festival) have been invited, and have accepted, to take part in some powerful industry panel talks in front of people like you, responding to a simple question: What would you tell your younger self about entering into the Creative Industries?

From 3rd-19th July 2015 Kingston & Elmbridge will be turned into an artists’ ‘playground’!

So, if you’re a young creative, who is embarking on a career within the creative industries, check out our Biography talks.

Recreating a festival atmosphere in Kingston and Elmbridge allows us to take you on a walk from The Notorious IBE Festival in The Netherlands to a stroll through the streets of Brighton and then to a full on jog to the Edinburgh Fringe! Each step will be full of dance, music, fashion, film, visual art, theatre and technology. Embracing the new creative cultures of a new generation of artists.

We are also excited to announce our film season marathon week of shorts, as part of the Birdies Film Festival. From Kingston town centre cafés, the Swallow Café & Restaurant in the Rose Theatre (weekdays from 12pm) to outside projections at the Riverside Edge Yard (Sundays from 4pm), catch a line-up of films from across the world all produced by young people. Check website for full details.

Equally this year I feel we have brought together some of the most avant-garde, experimental and even renegade artists and arts organisations concealed in the depths of London and the world to showcase their unseen creative secrets.

The festival this year draws to a close with the first IYAF Digital & Youth Arts Awards, a night that truly celebrates the youth arts sector. Trevor Blackman, Festival Director

The youngest student to complete the Live DJ course at Point Blank Music School in 2014 was signed to First Step Recordings , where his first tech house EP was released on 2nd February and was number 1 in the Beatport Top Ten Minimal Releases chart (this EP was supported by Roger Sanchez, Oliver Schories, Graham Gold, Sossa and Trevor Fung). 12-year old Lil Rich will be making a special guest appearance and debuting some exclusive tracks alongside headliners like Cries Wolf, Squingy, Jammar, Sneakbo and Ghetts at #IYAF2015. Fresh from their Best of the Fest Brighton award last year Fine Mess Theatre return with their latest production ‘Divas’ before heading to Edinburgh; and they are not the only ones stopping by before heading up to the M8. We also celebrate the art of dance in a special season of new works under The Movement Presents… (11th/12th July), a showcase weekend by young emerging producers, who I have had the privilege to work with over the last five months. The Movement….. supports both emerging and established artists. #PPL Dance presents ‘A Kid That Grows Up’, a gripping tale that follows a boy on his journey to manhood and Olivier Award Winning Boy Blue Entertainment (BBE), provide a treat for pure hip-hop lovers – ‘A Night with Boy Blue’.

Lil Rich

“ I have grown up in a house filled with music. From my dad’s Technics SL1200’s and vinyl collection to my mum’s jukebox filled with an eclectic selection of 7” records”. Lil Rich

The main emphasis for me in developing the festival this year has been to ensure that it supported and celebrated a vast array of work that the youth arts sector encompasses, helping to raise the achievement of some educationally under-performing groups and the under-representation of Asian women and people with disabilities in both youth arts courses and the industry. The awards night will not only recognise a host of arts categories but also individuals who are working in the shadows, making the biggest difference to individual and community life across the world. People who need to come out of the shadows in relation to IYAF and be thanked this year are our young co-producers, youth arts ambassadors, volunteers, mentors, venue/creative partners, funders and all the staff. Plus, Creative Youth and our trustees, for having faith in us all. Seeking inspiration ……wear more rubber You know we could all be heroes in our own way, but I find only young people have that real optimism and magical thinking. That infectious enthusiasm that sweeps anyone in its path into new ways of seeing, hearing, believing, understanding and in some cases an inspiring call to action. Whether, as a solo artist, company or part of our International Collaboration, I do hope you enjoy the energetic and at times, thought-provoking works of this year’s #CreativeHeroes.

The IYAF team Trevor Blackman, Festival / Artistic Director Catarina Costa, Co Producer Kareesan Sivabalan, Co Producer Lois Morris, Co Producer Tim Fulker, KGames Event Producer Miles Lacey, KGames, Event Producer Robin Hutchinson, Trustee and Founder Brett Alderton, Chief Operating Officer Philip Hetherington, Development Director Eva Lorincz, Finance Manager Maria Prasinou, Marketing Manager Ruth Davey, Marketing Consultant Emma Townsend, Volunteer Co-ordinator Callum Ostell, Production Manager Sarah Wilson, Production Manager Anna Gherman, Carnival Project Mentor Sabrina Corda, Birdies Film, Project Co-ordinator Hattie Ford, Development and Marketing Assistant Sangeeta Bharara, Festival Administration Assistant Bryan Ntueba, Festival Administration Assistant Hannah Smale, Festival Administration Assistant togadastudio.com, 2015 Publicity Design Team

A personal Thank you from Emma Townsend (Volunteer Co-ordinator) The International Youth Arts Festival could not go ahead without the help of our many, many volunteers. IYAF is shaped by its volunteers, and it is their hard work, creativity and determination, which brings International Youth Arts Festival back, each year, bigger and brighter. Through engaging, hardworking and enthusiastic volunteers into IYAF, we have achieved a festival which is fully informed by the people who gave up their time for free, which in turn, has enabled our aim to help young people realise their potential through the arts. Therefore, we would like to give a big thank you to our volunteers, as without you IYAF would not be possible. You are what make each year’s festival that little bit more worthwhile and that little bit more unforgettable. So if you see our volunteers around Kingston give them a smile!

IYAF 2015 NEXT LEVEL Launch

RAISE THE ROOF Gala Night

Intellectual and inter-cultural musical exchange isn’t the first thing one considers when launching a festival.

7th July- #CreativeHeroes – Raise the Roof – Gala night at the Rose Theatre Kingston in the presence of Creative Youth’s president HRH The Earl of Wessex KG GCVO – Rose Main House.

Yet at IYAF that is a central part of our philosophy. On Friday 3rd July from the streets of Kingston to Rose Theatre Kingston look out for the Children of Hamelin – where Next Level will launch the festival this year.

You don’t get a catch up service in this industry ….. I’ve taken to you so strong, It’s clear, we’re, going to get along

Come and be delighted and exhilarated by performances that have premiered and some that are yet to take place from some of this year’s #CreativeHeroes. This is a royal variety night for young people, by young people - they will take to the stage for your viewing whilst you mingle with royalty and a glittering array of our patrons, supporters and stars.

After a series of pop-up events in the day the night will feature our first Biography talks on the music industry with panelists including some of our Headliners, Krafted Music and Goodsoul Music, all responding to a simple question: What would you tell your younger self about entering into the creative industries?

Presented by MTV Base’s Ashley J & Break London’s Dobbs!

Rose Theatre Kingston The Swallow Cafe & Restaurant 13th July @ 5.45pm-6.45pm Biography – Music Industry

Followed by a rather unlikely but powerful line-up of dance and music artists performing on the main stage. Next Level night is an adventurous selection of emerging artists who we think are ready for that “Next Level” - sharing a stage with established artists. Poppin like Spotify, this year’s line up includes from Hertfordshire, BBC Introducing 2014 listed - Cries Wolf. From Boy Better Know crew – Jammar takes to the same stage as do Soundbytz (8th wonder beatbox champion, Don’t Flop, BBC3), Sneakbo and Ghetts. Whilst Far From The Norm prove the night may well be for the musical Nomads. Break London’s Dobbs is the mistress of ceremony (with a guest presenter) ensuring she keeps everyone in check for this series of mini-concerts.

• Pre-show Champagne reception with canapés in the VIP bar • Best seats in the house • Complimentary drink during the interval in VIP bar • Post-show reception • 2 x Tickets for our IYAF Digital & Youth Arts Awards on 16th July at Rose Theatre Kingston.

We just thought it might be easier to save space in the programme. Find your venue of choice and see what’s on that day.

Digital Technology & Music The idea of a youth festival based in Surrey, curating a Miami style music stage in the centre of Kingston or a Beatbox Battle in an old Post office, let alone championing local gaming musicians to appear in pubs, restaurants or an iconic Cereal Bar, might seem iffy. But, when the festival is IYAF and the venue is Kingston, the match makes more sense.

Jazz Fusion Concert (featuring the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Kingston Youth Big Band and Richmond Youth Jazz Band)

‘Quite brilliant’ The Yorkshire Post In what is an exciting ‘first’ for CREATIVE YOUTH, using a cast of entirely local children, the great John Rutter’s beautiful opera, THE PIPER OF HAMELIN is being produced by the Festival for the Festival. Directed by JEREMY JAMES TAYLOR, a Trustee of Creative Youth, who also wrote the libretto, the opera has been a big success all over the world but now enjoys its first major production in the UK since 1980 when it premiered at The York Festival. The opera tells the salutary tale of the fate which befell the greedy citizens of Hamelin Town when, having been beset by a plague of rats, they cheated the mysterious stranger who helped them out of their difficulties by refusing to honour their agreement to pay him. The price they paid was a sad and terrible one. ‘Moving, funny and poignant’ – The Yorkshire Post. The perfect family show. Price: £5-£10 Duration: 1 hr The Invention of Shoes

International Youth Arts Festival 2015 Remount for the Elmbridge Festival... Sunday Morning 8th July @ 8pm

Are we born evil or is it bred into us by our surroundings? This is the question that this hard-hitting, fast-paced piece of drama addresses. Set in the 1980s a young skinhead finds himself in a jail cell, alone and scared. How will he cope with what is thrown his way? Who is Creative Youth? CREATIVE YOUTH is a charity born from The International Youth Arts Festival (IYAF). Creative Youth enables young people to realise their potential through the arts. We encourage young people to be involved with innovative, original, ambitious projects and to work with artists of the highest quality. This collaboration often also encourages the artists themselves to take risks and push boundaries within their own work. In close collaboration with key partners, we mentor young individuals, entrepreneurs and organisations by providing artistic, business and strategic support, allowing the next generation of artists to flourish. We are very fortunate to enjoy the active involvement of our President, HRH the Earl of Wessex, as well as other influential figures. Our commitment is to ensure that young people, whatever their skills or backgrounds, are involved in highquality arts projects. As well as targeting some of the most vulnerable young people in our community, we also r each out to large and diverse audiences, as demonstrated by our commitment to using public spaces, street arts and digital technology, enabling us to reach new and untapped audiences. Visit our website for more information on our work and to find out how you can get involved with our projects throughout the year. http://iyafestival.org.uk/creative-youth/
