Over two years ago the charity Creative Youth decided that storytelling was going to be a key theme in their developing work - storytelling in all its forms. As conversations about the idea were shared and developed it became clear that others were just as excited about the idea of putting the ability to tell a tale centre stage. With such a common interest the partners joined together to create Kingston Connections, launched in 2013. The partners Creative Youth, Kingston University, Kingston Council, The Rose Theatre and The Community Brain want this to live all year round and allow as many people as possible to engage with story telling Whether it’s through theatre, performance, poetry, writing, seminars, lectures or song, storytelling has been the foundation of communities for thousands of years and we thought it was about time we celebrated it! The Festival of Stories, June 21 – June 29 2014, is a highlight of year round Kingston Connections activity, providing a further chance to engage with the project. It also provides an opportunity for all of the community to come together throughout the year to share and explore the power of storytelling right on our doorstep. So join us and start a storytelling revolution! If you think you don’t have a story, think again.

SHAKESPEARE AND GARRICK CONFERENCE WED 25 - FRI 27 Rose Theatre Main House The conference, held at the Rose Theatre in Kingston, will include a trip to Garrick’s Temple in Hampton and a screening of Simon Callow’s new film Miss in her Teens, based on David Garrick’s 1747 play of the same name. David Garrick’s Kingston connection dates from 1754, when he bought the house beside the Thames known ever after as Garrick’s Villa, and built his Shakespeare Temple, where he would be famously painted by Zoffany. So, as part of the 2014 Kingston Connections programme of events, Kingston University and the Rose Theatre will jointly host an academic conference to celebrate the great Shakespearean actor and director and commemorate his legacy to the Royal Borough. On Sunday 29 June Kingston town centre will resonate to the sound of hundreds of voices joining in the Big Sing – a fantastic outdoor vocal event involving local choirs and anyone who would like to rediscover the joy of community singing. Our mission is to bring music to the ears of shoppers and visitors throughout the town centre. All you have to do is turn up at the Rose at 10.45am on 29th June where there will be an open rehearsal with four choir leaders, members of the public and local youth and community choirs. Absolutely no singing or choir experience necessary. Come along and learn U2’s Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and a great African song, Iqude. Join a flashmob in the Bentall’s Store, watch choirs busk around the town centre then sing your heart out at 3.30pm as part of the Big Sing chorus in the Market Place. Organised by the Royal Borough of Kingston Arts Office.
