The Quilt Holes ~ Author: Unknown~ As I faced my Maker at the last judgment, I knelt before the Lord along with all the other souls. Before each of us laid our lives like the squares of a quilt in many piles; an angel sat before each of us sewing our quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life.. But as my angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares was. They were filled with giant holes. Each square was labeled with a part of my life that had been difficult, the challenges and temptations I was faced with in every day life. I saw hardships that I endured, w hich were the largest holes of all. I glanced around me. Nobody else had such squares. Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled with rich color and the bright hues of worldly fortune. I gazed upon my own life and was disheartened. My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty, like binding air Finally the time came when each life was to be displayed, held up to the light, the scrutiny of truth. The others rose; each in turn, holding up their tapestries. So filled their lives had been. My angel looked upon me and nodded for me to rise. My gaze dropped to the ground in shame. I hadn't had all the earthly fortunes. I had love in my life and laughter. But there had also been trials of illness and wealth, and false accusations that took from me my world, as I knew it. I had to start over many times. I often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to somehow muster the strength to pick up and begin again. I spent many nights on my knees in prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life . I had often been held up to ridicule, which I endured painfully, each time offering it up to the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my skin beneath the judgmental gaze of those who unfairly judged me. And now, I had to face the truth. My life was what it was, and I had to accept it for what it was. I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of my life to the light‌.. An awe-filled gasp filled the air. I gaz ed around at the others who stared at me with wide eyes. Then, I looked upon the tapestry before me. Light flooded the many holes, creating an image, the face of Christ. Then our Lord stood before me, with warmth and love in His eyes. He said, 'Eve ry time you gave over your life to Me, it became My life, My hardships, and My struggles. Each point of light in your life is when you stepped aside and let Me shine through, until there was more of Me than there was of you.' May all our quilts be threadbare and worn, allowing Christ to shine through!

Just recently I was struck again by how much we seem to pack into a short period of time. This year is no exception. It is quite daunting to realise that we are not even halfway through the year and we have done so much already! Thank you to every person and each group who donated one or more quilts for the survivors of the earthquake in Japan. There were some really beautiful pieces among all the quilts that were donated. I am sure that they will be much appreciated. As a guild we donated 34 quilts and 47 polar fleece blankets to them. I delivered them on the 30th April to the GRG at one of the collections points at Flora Farm. The photographs show a selection of the quilts I received. Some members of our guild have gone through difficult times recently coping with illness, or coping with a spouse or parent who is ill. Our thoughts are with you all. Please note that the Guild has some comfort quilts for precisely these times. If you are aware of a guild member who needs our comfort and thoughts, please call or email me and we will make arrangements to get a comfort quilt to that person. On 7 May a few members got together at Petro‟s home to make sensory quilts and other sensory stimulating goodies. Although we were not many, we all had a great time putting the brightest quilts and goodies together. We hope that many of you have been working on ideas at home. Please bring all you projects to the June meeting so that we can hand them over to Sylvia and the team of therapists and care givers in the Pretoria area. A prize will be awarded to the most innovative and original sensory stimulating quilt or object. From what I‟ve been hearing in the grapevine, we are going to be very surprised by the number of potholders we will be exchanging at our June meeting. Please hand over your potholders to Jaycee at the visitors table. You will be asked to put your name down on a list. The number allocated to your potholders will be attached to the set and then they will be hung in the church. After the meeting you will draw a number and return home with a set of potholders made by someone else. 4
We have another course by Doortjie Gersbach to look forward to in May. By the time you receive this newsletter she will have come and gone. I am sure we will see some stunning examples of her work. This reminds me to urge everyone who has attended a course during the past year to bring the end product to the Friendship meeting for Show and Tell. We would love to see the diversity of all the projects! I have received notification from the organisers of the Hobby-X exhibition that the “Pretoria exhibition” will be presented at the Gallagher estates in Midrand from 1 to 4 September 2011. Again we‟ve been invited to participate by exhibiting our quilts. The committee has discussed the invitation at length and has decided not to participate this year in view of the fact that the exhibition is in Midrand. We will most probably find it difficult to get enough volunteers to build and break up the booth, as well as man the booth for the four days. Members are however encouraged to attend the exhibition, as we are sure that it will be a stimulating day away from home. You will be able to board the Gautrain and take a shuttle to the venue! I am very privileged to be going overseas for two weeks. I will be visiting Oslo (Norway) and Provence in France, so I‟m looking forward to buying some real Provencal fabrics. I will come and show you some of the fabrics once I get back, a few days before our next Friendship meeting. Remember the date: 11 June 2011. I look forward to seeing you all at the meeting. Remember that from now on you will be buying your own cake and lunch at the meeting. All coffee, tea and fruit juice will still be free of charge. See you all at our June meeting!

The Committee has decided to do something different for the “block of the meeting” in June. Instead of asking members to bring a specific block to the meeting, which is then raffled, we invite all members to bring a set of two completed quilted potholders. The potholders will be handed in and a number will be allocated to each set. All potholders will be displayed in the church. Each person who has submitted a set will then draw a number out of a hat and take home that set. Members will be free to exchange potholders among each other after the meeting.
THIS BEAUTIFUL QUILT WILL BE RAFFLED AT OUR MEETINGS Buy your raffle tickets at R5 each at our next meeting
Please note that the following “rules” apply: Size: Shape:
Loops: Batting:
Technique:
Color:
Between 6 and 8 inches Square, circular, or oblong. One can even make potholders in the shape of a fruit, e.g. a pear. All potholders should have a loop so that they may be hung on a hook in the kitchen. All potholders should include a heavyweight batting such as heatex. Please do not use thin batting as the potholders are not efficient and will not protect our hands from hot materials. Any technique may be used, piecing, appliqué, etc. You may also use a single piece of pretty fabric and quilt that, as long as the material is of good quality so that it can be washed frequently. Any color combination may be used. Be creative!
We look forward to seeing lots of lovely potholders, so start sewing!

Dear Jacaranda quilters,
TO ALL THE KNITTERS:
From time to time I receive requests from somebody for a quilt to be made for him/her.
Thank you so much for the wonderful response. I have received quite a few beanies.
At the meeting I asked if the persons who are willing to work on commission would come forward and put their names on a list so that I can start compiling a database of these quilters. We have not yet collected any names. I am sure there should be quite a few quilters out there who will work in this way.
You still have time until the June meeting. We will then hand them over. Keep those needles clicking!!!!
Please ask your group members if anyone is interested, so that I can refer the requests to the right person. Take care

Our quilt home group presently consists of eleven ladies: Amanda, Annemarie, Annetjie, Denise, Etta, Joan, Kobie, M agda, M areli, M aureen en Rina. The Silver Lake Dollas reside in and around Silver Lakes, which explains the first part of our name. We have decided to call ourselves “Dollas” as this (as you will probably know) means “Crazy quilt” (please note: not “crazy quilters” as some of our husbands mockingly say). We have learned the following techniques and completed the following projects: Christmas quilt (Christmas star runner) and Christmas balls; Chicken door stopper; Trip around the world; Teapot holder; Bowties; Creative freehand appliqué work (Dollas needle work bag); Bead knitting, bead tassels and bead creepy crawlies; and Flying geese. The Silver Lake Dollas actively participate in the activities of the Jacaranda Quilt Guild. One of our members serves on the management committee of the Jacaranda Quilt guild. We seldom miss the Friendship meetings. Some of us are addicted to courses while the others attend the course when they want to learn something special. Quite a number of us are going to attend the National Quilt Festival in Stellenbosch later this year. As a group we participated in the Alzheimer project – so we don‟t just do socializing! The Silver Lake Dollas don‟ t only make creative, colourful and beautiful quilts, but is blessed with many gifts. The flower arrangements on out festive tables, the table settings and the eats are out of this world! One of our Dollas takes excellent photographs and captures our meetings and activities in a scrapbook on an ongoing basis. Can you believe it: We received positive comments on an article o n the Silver Lake Dollas in Intra M uros (the community periodical of Silver Lakes).

How to “spice up” your home group Adapted from Australian Country Threads Appliqué Yearbook. Vol 8 no2
Some home groups have informed us that their group is not as active as it used to be and appears to have become a little stagnant. I recently found this article, with lots of good ideas in a magazine and thought it would be a good idea to share their suggestions with you. They have been adapted to suit our particular situation. UFO exchange Ask each member to bring one UFO to a meeting and display them. One may have lost one’s passion for a specific project. Let everyone have a look and see what strikes their fancy. Each person can then finish someone else’s work. Decide beforehand if the finished quilt is returned to the original owner or if it becomes the property of the “new Boss”. Become involved in the community Become involved in a specific charity and support this charity by either making a quilt for them to raffle or show support in another way. Share your mishaps or other “not so good projects” Everyone has a project, which they feel embarrassed about. Get everyone to bring their stitching disasters or first attempts. Show the work and tell the story, be proud of how far you’ve come. Start a group newsletter/ journal or scrap book Document how the group develops and has developed over the years. Add photographs, favorite tips and anything that has inspired the group. Include other things such as each member’s favorite recipe, etc. This can be a wonderful bonding experience and add to the sense of belonging. Have a swap meeting Ask everyone to bring a number of fabric pieces which they do not want anymore or cannot use anymore and swap fabrics. Someone else’s discards, could be just the thing you are looking for. It’s like shopping without spending money! Organize a fun day out for the group Organize a fabric shopping experience or road trip, have a picnic in the park, attend a quilt exhibition in another town or city, arrange a dinner or evening out together. Design a logo A logo can be quite a binding factor. So get together one day and have a brainstorming session. Choose the one everyone likes best and have it machine embroidered on patches of fabric, which can be sewn on a T -shirt or bag. Commemorate special occasions Commemorate all special occasions, e.g. birthdays, Christmas, Easter, the group’s anniversary, etc. Arrange a special treat for everyone or go out to celebrate. Ask an expert to teach a technique Ask an expert to come and teach a technique to the group or ask one of the members to teach the others a technique. Share knowledge and tips with each other Arrange a get-together or meeting with another group and share hints and tips. Compare what each group is doing and learn from each other. Do a fabric swap with this other group or swap blocks according to a specific theme. Do a combined project, e.g. a round Robin quilt in the group. Share the group’s story with other Jacaranda quilters Write a short article for the Jacaranda Quilter’s newsletter and add photographs of the members and different activities the group has been doing. Email them to Delmarie I hope this will blow new life into the groups that have become a less challenging and make all the get -togethers enjoyable! Let us know if you found any of these suggestions helpful.

Landscape : A colourful Palette In October 2010, my dear friend and international artist, Pieter Janse van Rensburg, asked me to do an interpretation of one of his paintings in fabric for his solo exhibition in May 2011. Little did I know what I was in for, but this project was a lot of fun and working with the design of a Master, brought me back to the basics of art. Light and shadow, circle of movement, colour and contrast. Strongly influenced by the Everard Group, Pieter’s paintings features seemingly flat surfaces of bold orange, purple and green, looking deceptively easy to recreate in fabric with appliqué. With great thanks to the extensive landscape fabric stash of my sister Ethelda, I made a great start, but soon realized that I had to buy, paint, dye and colour with, fabric dye, pens, crayons and ink if I wanted to do justice to the work of art. What a journey into the psyche of the painter. His playful side with the sun reflecting on the cliffs on the left – bright colours mirroring the playful joy and the deeper side of thought and pain on the right. The deep greens and dark purple creating the stark contrast. The project left me humble and feeling inadequate to express myself with so much honesty. It was an honour to be trusted with such a huge responsibility and a privilege to introduce art quilting to an audience mainly ignorant of this form of art. My thanks to Pieter, for allowing me the chance to prove myself, my DH Johan for allowing me the space to create, Ethelda, for all the teaching, fabric and support, Elize van Biljon for her honest opinion, good common sense and emotional support and all the other quilting friends I met along the way, giving tips, tricks and encouragement. Quilting does not have to stand back one inch in the world of art! ~ DANEL MULLER~

Pieter Janse van Rensburg at the opening of the exhibition
Met die halfjaar merk op ons voel dit vir my of „n donkerwolk van depressie op my af storm, die UFO‟s het intussen vermeerder, die jaar se dae verminder en my voorneme om meer voltooide items in my huis te hê word sommer by die agterdeur uit gevee. Doortjie was GREAT as usual, we had loads of fun, learned a lot, bought a lot and nearly left the class with a completed top to fit a double bed. A hundred blocks sewn in one day, enjoying snacks and tea with quilt friends, for those of you who missed this one you really missed out BIG. Remember 50% of the course fees are payable upon writing your name on the list as a prospective attendant. The other 50% must be paid TWO WEEKS prior to the course date. In the event of cancellations or not paying the second 50% in time, half of your 50% will be forfeited and your place will be open for some other prospective attendant. Come and visit me at the next meeting to register, I will have photographs available to show the next courses as well as a wall filled with posters of our local teachers and the different classes they teach.
NEXT COURSE:

~Lida Brand~ Doortjie Gersbach’s ‘5 Scrap Blocks’ Class When my mother in law invited me to the quilting Course on Saturday I was very excited but also extremely apprehensive of making a huge fool out of myself in front of all of these formidable, talented and experienced ladies, since I know next to nothing about stitching, never mind quilting. However, I took a huge breath and decided that I‟m going to dare it. To my utter astonishment and surprise I immediately felt at home in the midst of the wonderful people at the course. If I didn‟t know how to do something, somebody immediately notice d and helped me before I could even ask. It was a lovely day and to my surprise I stitched a full 86 blocks in one day. Working with the floral prints was such fun. I was astonished at the beautiful things made by especially Doortjie Gerbach and could no t fathom how one spends 7 or 8 years working on one quilt, until I saw how amazingly intricate the quilt is and I find myself trying to find time to learn how to hand sew a quilt. I also realised that it can be quite addictive and find that once I start quilting the world can end and I really wouldn‟t mind as long as it gives me more time to “just quickly” stitch another block. I made new friends, saw the most beautiful quilts, had a lovely time and can‟t wait for the next course or outing… now – to find time to stitch my blocks together…. I find that my work is interfering with my quilting time. ~ Natasja van Wyk~ 18

QUILTS 4 LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC & PARALYMPIC GAMES PENNANT TEXTILE PROJECT Get your school involved in a community textile project for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Quilts 4 London are aiming to collect 14,000 pennants, one for each athlete taking in part in the Olympic or Paralympic Games. Your pupils could make a pennant which will be given to an athlete in 2012 and be part of the national Cultural Olympiad. A Quilts4london Textile Pennant is a special gift from you to an athlete of the Olympics, Paralympics and Special Olympics, as a memento of their participation in the 2012 Games. This project gives quilters, felt makers, embroiderers, cross stitchers, textile artists, in fact anyone who sews (or not!), the opportunity to express their support, through the medium of fabric, fiber and stitch, and become part of the whole Olympic event in London 2012. The Pennants can be as simple or elaborate as you require, and they can be made by anyone regardless of their level of ability or age. They can be made using any textile media - felt, fabric, cross stitch, embroidery, painted fabric, beaded - in fact anything. They need to be A3 sized (12” x 16”) (42cm x 30cm) overall and suggestions and instructions can be found on our website www.quilts4london.org.uk Designs for the Pennants could be inspired by your regional culture or history, sport or British traditions - the more diverse the better. This project is a fantastic way to bring us all together to support the athletes in London 2012, and a wonderful way to showcase all the diverse forms of textiles that exist. An Education Pack is now available. Schools, scouts, guides, after-school clubs plus many more groups can take part making Pennants for Quilts4london in addition to creating Pennants to keep for their own displays. It’s a wonderful way to showcase the creativity of children and to get them involved in the lead up to the Oly mpics. GOODIE BAGS Am I the only one who loves to get a Goody Bag or are there some of you that also loves it. A Goody Bag for me is like a Lucky Packet. There is always something handy included. Well it is time to start collecting donations for our Goodie Bags for “ Kwilt Ini-Bos “ in October. Every lady registered receives a goodie bag and we would like these to be full of fun stuff! If any one of you feel to contribute a little something , I will appreciate it. Items can represent your shop, your business, or be from you personally just wishing attendees a great time! Perhaps the home groups can participate in this event. Things like pens, key chains, quilt related goodies, etc... fun, useful, imaginative, mysterious, whatever you can think of! We are assembling 40 bags, so items should be donated in this number, and we do need to have them by Sept 15th. You can hand over your Goodies to Rita Cloete at our June meeting, but if it is not ready by then you can hand it to me before or on the 15th of September. I hope you all have great hearts and open hands.
Goodie Greetings ~Gerda Grobler~
