Colour Meaning http://www.colour-wheel-pro.com/color-theory-basics.html Red Red brings text and images to the foreground. Use it as an accent colour to stimulate people to make quick decisions; it is a perfect color for 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons on Internet banners and websites. Light red represents joy, sexuality, passion, sensitivity, and love. Pink signifies romance, love, and friendship. It denotes feminine qualities and passiveness. Dark red is associated with vigor, willpower, rage, anger, leadership, courage, longing, malice, and wrath. Brown suggests stability and denotes masculine qualities. Reddish-brown is associated with harvest and fall. Orange Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design. Orange is very effective for promoting food products and toys. Dark orange can mean deceit and distrust. Red-orange corresponds to desire, sexual passion, pleasure, domination, aggression, and thirst for action. Gold evokes the feeling of prestige. The meaning of gold is illumination, wisdom, and wealth. Gold often symbolizes high quality. Yellow Yellow is very effective for attracting attention, so use it to highlight the most important elements of your design. Light yellow tends to disappear into white, so it usually needs a dark colour to highlight it. Dull (dingy) yellow represents caution, decay, sickness, and jealousy. Light yellow is associated with intellect, freshness, and joy. Green Green, as opposed to red, means safety; it is the colour of free passage in road traffic. Use green to indicate safety when advertising drugs and medical products. Green is directly related to nature, so you can use it to promote 'green' products. Dull, darker green is commonly associated with money, the financial world, banking, and Wall Street. Dark green is associated with ambition, greed, and jealousy. Yellow-green can indicate sickness, cowardice, discord, and jealousy. Aqua is associated with emotional healing and protection. Olive green is the traditional color of peace. Blue Blue is the colour of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. When used together with warm colours like yellow or red, blue can create high-impact, vibrant designs; for example, blue-yellow-red is a perfect colour scheme for a superhero. Light blue is associated with health, healing, tranquility, understanding, and softness. Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness. Purple Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design. You can use bright purple when promoting children's products. Light purple evokes romantic and nostalgic feelings. Dark purple evokes gloom and sad feelings. It can cause frustration. White White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the colour of perfection. White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. As opposed to black, white usually has a positive connotation. You can use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. Black Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. Black is a mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). Black gives the feeling of perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability. Black contrasts well with bright colours. Combined with red or orange â&#x20AC;&#x201C; other very powerful colours â&#x20AC;&#x201C; black gives a very aggressive colour scheme.

Hello Everyone Ek sit hier op Skukuza my brief en skryf, 5 seekoeie baljaar hier voor my in die water en ek het al vanoggend 2 nuwe voëls geïdentifiseer. Maar daar lê ‘n groot hartseer in my – een van ons staatmakerkwilters is oorlede. Dorie du Koker het baie skielik siek geword en is Saterdagoggend oorlede. Ons harte gaan uit na haar familie, maar weet dat hulle ‘n ongelooflike nalatenskap van haar geërf het. Sy het besondere mooi kwilte gemaak. Dorie, ons gaan jou mis. How time flies!! It feels as if the year has just started, but the seasons are changing and what a sight all the colourful leaves are. I hope that you all had a very blessed Easter. Soon it will be time for soup, casseroles and crawling in under our quilts. This has been a very busy year so far. We had a very successful friendship meeting with exceptional feedback about our th guest speaker. At the end of February we had a meeting with all the home group leaders and on 17 March we celebrated National Quilt Day by making quilts for the charity project we are busy with. Thank you so much for all the quilts we have received – we will give you a final count at the June meeting. Thank you to each and everyone who gave of their time, fabric and helped to put the blocks together. Not to mention the quilting and bindings. A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!! Our next friendship meeting will be on 9 June 2012 and at the D.R. Church in Wierdapark. This time we are going to learn about colour. Marianne Niemandt will take us on a very exciting journey playing and experimenting after pasting colour wheels in the demo’s. If you already have a colour wheel – please bring it along to participate in the exercises. Do not miss this meeting – we are going to learn a lot. Please also make several blocks for our block of the meeting. This one is going to be VERY easy and it is always nice to see the excitement when somebody wins!! A reminder to all the groups – remember to bring your finished banner blocks to the meeting and hand them to Marianne Niemandt. She and Corrianne are co-coordinating the new banner for our guild. Onthou ook ons kompetisie – ons wil julle regtig aanmoedig om deel te neem. Ons is besig om te onderhandel vir pryse en die reëls en inskrywingsvorm is elders in die nuusbrief. Rita se dogterjies van Bela-Bela neem ook deel in hul eie kategorie en julle wil nie hê hulle moet stof in ons oë kom skop nie!!!! We will also be handing over the bags Nicolette handed out. Please fill these with the required goodies and bring them along. Jacaranda Guild now has its own website. Have a look and if you know about any other beautiful quilts – please let us know (send a photograph) so that we can put it on the website and show the world what the Jacaranda ladies are doing. This will take place at the Centurion Art Gallery. The rd opening function will be on the 3 July at 6pm. All are welcome – just bring a plate of eats. Wine and juice will be available. April 2012 Elsa Brits, the chairperson of the SAQG, regularly sends out a Newsletter, which keeps the guild representatives informed about all the things that are happening in the guild. The following matters have received attention recently: 1. All the guilds in South Africa have been asked to participate in the Monsanto/Dekalb centenary celebration, which was initiated by Almari Potgieter. They require more than 400 quilts/blankets, which we as a small guild could never supply, so it is great that the other guilds have also been asked to participate. We are looking forward to seeing photographs of all the quilts on the runway. It is going to be a sight to see! 2. IQCA (27 – 29 July): all the Gauteng guilds have been asked if there are members who are prepared to do duty on one of the days of IQCA. Any Jacaranda members who wish to assist by doing white glove duty, man the SAQG table or become a teacher’s angel, are asked to contact Ina Meyer, who will pass on your names to Elsa. 3. The Jacaranda Guild has submitted an up to date membership list and paid all our subs to SAQG. Thanks to Dal and Denise for a job well done. 4. All guilds have been asked to discuss ways in which quilting is promoted, especially by teaching members of different communities how to do patchwork and quilting. Bets Arcus, who is our “Share and Care” committee member, has some excellent ideas about how we can spread the word and empower people from different communities. She will be contacting individual home groups during the next few months to give assistance and advice. 5. The Travelling exhibition is coming to Pretoria in July. Please diarise 3rdJuly 2012, as we will be hosting a party to open the exhibition at the Centurion Art Gallery. Everyone will be welcome, just bring a small plate of eats! We also appeal to guild members to come forward and assist us during the month. We will need quite a number of ladies to do white glove duty during this time. A list will be circulated shortly asking for assistance. 6. Remember to visit the SAQG website to see the latest news and developments in the Guild. 7. All guilds have been asked to nominate a worthy South African Quilter for the prestigious Pro Dedicate award. The nominees should be quilters who are in “a class of their own”, often the unsung heroes of the South African quilting fraternity. Jacaranda guild members are asked to think of a nominee and to bring this person’s name to Ina or myself so that we can discuss the nomination. Please note that a motivation and a summary of the quilter’s achievements are required. 8. The closing date for the quarterly competition (a photograph of a quilt which will be on the opening page of the SAQG website for the next three months) is 31stMay 2012. If you want to nominate somebody’s quilt, please send a photograph of the quilt to me (vanvelze@iafrica.com) and I will discuss the nomination with the committee before submitting the photograph to SAQG. 9. The SAQG committee meeting is scheduled to take place on 25 and 26 July 2012. Any member who wants to submit an agenda item must please email this to me, together with an explanation about why you want this particular agenda item to be discussed. Closing date for submission of an item is 3rd June 2012, with me.

Block of the meeting – 9th June 2012 “Bulls eye”  The background must be black or shades/prints dominantly black.  The circles as colourful as possible.  Cut a square 12” x 12” out of the black fabric for the background.  Cut 3 circles out of three colourful/bright coloured fabric o Circle 1 measures 9” o Circle 2 measures 7 ½ ” o Circle 3 measures 5 ¼ ”  I cut circle 3 out of the centre of circle 1, to save fabric and to have less fabric in the centre to work/quilt through.

 Place circle 1 in the centre of the back ground fabric and stitch down ¼” from the raw edge leaving a raw edge.  Place circle 2 on to circle 1 and stitch down in the same manner.  Place circle 3 on to circle 2 and stitch down.

Hand in this square with the 3 circles at our next meeting.

It was with much sadness that we heard about the passing of Ruth Jobson and Dorie du Koker. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families during this time of loss. It has also come to our attention that Marinde Kotze's mother has passed away. Herewith our deepest sympathy to her and her family with this tragic loss. Sterkte aan al ons lede wat siek is, ons dink aan julle en bid dat julle vinnig en volkome sal herstel. Love from all of us at Jacaranda Guild "My liefste Door", dit is hoe ek Dorie altyd genoem het, en wat sy vir my was. Al was Dorie 25 jaar ouer as ek, was sy my regte, egte maatjie!! Okay, eers weer die trane afvee, en dan verder vertel. Die tyd gaan so gou verby, maar ek is amper seker dat dit September 2006 was toe Dorie die eerste keer plot toe gekom het vir 'n Millennium Bee's vergadering. Sy het lekker gelag toe ek oor die foon vir haar gevra het of sy nog self bestuur?! Want Dorie het elke ‘shortcut’ geken in die hele Suid Afrika, of so het dit vir ons gevoel wat saam met haar gery het!! Dorie was 'n Steenbok, soos ek, en 'n ding moes reg, of jy moes lostrek!!S y was nooit suinig met raad of hulp of 'n lappie nie. Niks was onmoontlik nie, en daar was altyd genoeg tyd om 'n vriendin te help met 'n krisiskwilt!! Op die see retreats was Door 'n bok vir sports, het maar die Grappa gedrink, en in die kar vertel wat sy daarvan gedink het, en ons het gelê soos ons lag! My liefste Door, vir jou sal ons nooit ooit kan vergeet nie, jy was net 'n te groot presence in ons lewe!! Ons glo jy leer al die mense daar bo om net so 'shim' te wees soos jy ons geleer het! Dankie vir al die lekker memories! Jou Pieta maatjie.

Ek dink die meeste kwilters het soos ek, 'n liefde vir diere, wat ander mense stom slaan en hulle koppe in ongeloof laat skud! Wollies Diereprojek is 'n liefdesprojek wat deur Cilla begin is, om mense in minder gegoede dele van Pretoria Noord te help om hulle diere te steriliseer. Baie van die veeartse in die omgewing ondersteun die projek en baie diere word dan reggemaak vir 'n minimale bedrag. Cilla betaal ook baie van die sterilisasies self, wanneer die mense net eenvoudig nie geld het nie. Haar regterhand in die projek is Rensia, en sy maak ook die hondekussings wat dan verkoop word vir fondse vir die projek. Die kussings word gestop met al die oorskiet stukkies lap en batting wat julle altyd vir my gee, en so word niks gemors nie, en bietjies van ons kwiltliefde word vir die diere gegee! NEW NATIONAL QUILT COMPETITION CATEGORIES TRADITIONAL QUILTS: Traditionally-Constructed Quilts - NOT an Original Design Quilts that are constructed using traditional techniques* and traditional materials**, but are not the entrant’s own original design. Design can be from a pattern of any source (e.g. book, magazine, purchased pattern), can be designed by a person other than the entrant or can use designs in the public domain. Quilts started in a class where a pattern was supplied are allowed. Replica quilts are allowed. Quilts made from a kit which include fabric are not allowed. The origin of the design must be stated on the entry form. The onus is on the entrant to ensure that no copyright has been violated, including obtaining written permission when in doubt. Judging of these quilts will be based on workmanship, use of colour and choice of fabrics. 1.

TRADITIONAL QUILTS: SMALL (no side longer than 150 cm)

TRADITIONAL QUILTS: LARGE (no side longer than 250 cm) Note that there is no Traditional Masters category

CONTEMPORARY QUILTS: Traditionally-Constructed Quilts - OWN Original Design Quilts that are constructed using traditional techniques* and traditional materials**, but are the entrant’s own original design. Original designs include those that have been adapted by the entrant from another source (including designs in the public domain), but where at least 50% of the visible surface of the quilt is the original design of the quilt-maker and where the quilt as a whole cannot be easily confused with the original source of the inspiration. Quilts started in a class where a pattern was not supplied are allowed. Judging of these quilts will be based equally on workmanship and aesthetic merit. 3.

CONTEMPORARY QUILTS: SMALL (no side longer than 150 cm)

CONTEMPORARY QUILTS: LARGE (no side longer than 250 cm)

CONTEMPORARY – MASTERS: Quilters who have received a First Prize or Best of Show in an Innovative or Contemporary category within the past 10 years must enter their Contemporary quilts in this category. Must be an original design of the entrant. No side can be longer than 250 cm.

FREESTYLE QUILTS (formerly “Art Quilts”): Quilts which incorporate non-traditional techniques* and/or non-traditional materials** as well as make use of any traditional techniques and/or materials. At least 50% of the visible surface of the quilt must be made from fabric. There must be 3 layers, with quilting through all 3 layers, on at least 25% of the visible surface of the quilt (but not necessarily on the entire quilt). It must be entrant’s own original design. Cannot be from a pattern or kit or have been started in a class where a pattern was supplied and used. Judging of these quilts will be based mainly on aesthetic merit, supported by sound workmanship. 6.

FREESTYLE QUILTS – SMALL (no side longer than 150 cm)

FREESTYLE QUILTS – LARGE (no side longer than 250 cm)

8. FREESTYLE QUILTS – MASTERS: Must be an original design of the entrant. Quilters who have received a First Prize or Best of Show in an Art Quilts or Freestyle Quilts category within the past 10 years must enter their Freestyle quilts in this category. No side can be longer than 250 cm. OTHER CATEGORIES 9. COLLABORATIVE QUILTS - Quilts made by two people. Any techniques and materials may be used. Entry form must state whether it is an original design or provide details of design source. Maximum size of 250 cm per side. 10. GROUP QUILTS – Quilts made by a group of 3 or more people. Any techniques and materials may be used. Entry form must state whether it is an original design or provide details of design source. Maximum size of 250 cm per side. 11. MINIATURE QUILTS – Quilts limited to a maximum of 60 cm per side or 10 cm per block and no block side larger than 10 cm. Must be in scaled-down proportion to a regular-sized quilt. Any techniques and materials may be used. Entry form must state whether it is an original design or provide details of design source. 12. UNDER 16 YEARS of AGE – Quilts made by entrants 16 years old or younger. Any techniques and materials may be used. Entry form must state whether it is an original design or provide details of design source. Maximum size of 250 cm per side.

13. 3-DIMENSIONAL ITEMS – Includes wearable art (clothing), bags, soft sculpture and other 3-dimensional items. Any item that can be hung from a hook, draped over a hanger or is free-standing (and selfsupporting) on a horizontal surface may be entered in this category. There must be quilting through 3 layers on at least 25% of the visible portion of the item. Any techniques and materials may be used. Place mats and pot holders not eligible. A maximum dimension can be set by the organizers of the show, depending on their available exhibition space. 14. OUTREACH – Quilts made by those in Outreach/Share & Care programs. Any techniques and materials may be used. Must be able to be hung from a sleeve sewn to the top back of the quilt. Must be entirely the work of the person stated on the entry form. 15. CHALLENGE – as set by the organizers of the competition 16. Rules of the Competition  

All entries must be in pristine condition. All entries must consist of three (3) layers and must be quilted or use relevant methods such as Crazy patchwork, Cathedral windows and Mola, with the exception of Freestyle and 3-D Item entries (see category definitions for their quilting requirements). All entries must be the work of only one person, except for entries in Collaborative and Group categories. All work must be solely the work of the individual or group stated as the Maker(s) on the entry form. No payment may be made for any work whatsoever on any entry, either before or after the competition. Comprehensive design credits and inspiration must be given, where applicable. When inspired by a photograph, picture or painting, a photocopy of your inspiration MUST accompany the entry. Quilts previously entered into a national quilt competition in South African are excluded. A maximum of 4 entries per person is allowed, excluding any Challenge or other specialty competitions. Each quilt may be entered into only one category. The category choice is the sole responsibility of the entrant. Quilts with heavy embellishments, rigid frames, mountings or special devices of any kind, are not allowed. All quilts must be able to be hung from a 10 cm sleeve sewn to the top back of the quilt, 2 cm short of either side, except for 3-D Items (see category definition). All quilts must have a cloth label, with the following information on it: Quilt Category and Entry Number, Quilt Title, Quilt Maker’s Name, Address and Phone Number and the Date the quilt was made. This label must be securely sewn to the back of the quilt, placed on the lower left-hand corner (viewed from the back). The label must have a piece of dark cloth tacked over all the information except the Category, Entry Number and the Quilt title. If the name of the quilt maker appears on the front of the quilt, this must also be covered by a piece of dark fabric. Although the greatest care will be taken with all entries, the quilts are exhibited entirely at the risk of the owner. Please arrange your own insurance. The judges’ decision is final and NO queries or correspondence pertaining to the judging will be considered. The organizers reserve the right to reject any quilt that they feel is inappropriate, offensive or of a standard unacceptable to be exhibited at a South African National Quilt Festival.

PRO DEDICATE AWARD WINNER 2011 HETTIE SCHWELLNUS At our February Friendship Meeting we were also honoured by the presence of Hettie Schwellnus, who now lives in Centurion. She was a founder of quilting in South Africa and published the first South African quilting book. In recognition of her contribution, she was awarded Honorary Membership of the Jacaranda Guild. Hettie Schwellnus finished her studies in Domestic Science in 1948. She has been a teacher at a number of Secondary schools and later became a lecturer at the Teachers’ College at Potchefstoom for several years. She is an expert of several forms of patchwork and different techniques of traditional needle arts and especially traditional patchwork. Since 1979 she started to specialize in patchwork. Hettie gave beginners courses and later advanced courses since 1981 in Potchefstroom, Ventersdorp, Carletonville, Rustenburg, Bloefontein, Malelaan, Nelspruit, Olifantshoek, Parys, Krugersdorp, Settlers, Pretoria, Mariko and late in the South Island of New Zealand where she has started a new guild in one of the smaller towns. Hettie held exhibitions since 1980, with her first exhibition being in Bloemfontein. Exhibitions where held in museums, churches, schools, towns around Potchefstroom, Pretoria, the Old Presidency in Bloemfontein in 1986 and at the world-show in Sau Paulo in 1982. Hettie has made several bed quilts in commission of museums, the SABC and the sculpturer, Fleischer’s daughter, in Germany. She has also spoken on television and radio programs. Hettie was the founder member and first chairlady of ‘Western Transvaal Quilt’ in 1990 and also served as a founder member of the SAQG and became the representative at Western Transvaal Quilters Guild (now the Golden West Quilters Guild) on the SAQG. Hettie has been a judge at the Bloemfontein’s National quilt exhibition – the first national Quilt exhibition in South Africa as well as at Agricultural Shows. She is the author of the book ‘Las met Lap - Stap vir Stap’ published in 1982 and has written reviews for magazines, newspapers, the Vroueblad and the Department of Education and Culture. Hettie always tried to give her best to the quilters’ community. She is an unselfish, humble person and has never taken part in competitions but in exchange, she offered her time to share her knowledge and love with fellow quilters. She served her fellow quilters and neighbours with passion and at the age of 84 years she is still busy to knit blankets for the church. Hettie, we as Jacaranda Quilters’ looking forward to seeing you at more meetings!

Aan kreatiwiteit is daar beslis geen einde nie en onder die vaardige hande van Almari Potgieter word ons heeltyd uitgedaag om ons vlerke te sprei en nuwe dinge met entoesiasme aan te pak! Hierdie jaar het behoorlik onder ons vlam gevat, met verlede jaar se projekte wat nog afgerond moes word en hierdie jaar sin wat reeds halfpad vorder, kan ek eintlik nie dink dat daar maar net 4 maande verby is nie! Ons het omtrent gewikkel! Onder andere hierdie jaar het ons verskeie liefdadigheids kwilts aangepak, waarvan 4 reeds klaar is! Ons het ‘n ‘Blok of the month’ projek, waar ons kon kies tussen die pragtigste huisies, Sunbonnet Sues, Funky birds, hoendertjies of ‘pajama’ katte. Hierdie appliek projek het my al slapelose nagte gegee, maar nou is dit by verre die projek wat ek die meeste geniet! Ek leer oneindig baie. Verder leer ons Free motion quilting, waar ons elke week ‘n nuwe tegniek gewys word en dit dan op ‘n 12”x12” blok gaan oefen. Hierdie sal aan die einde van die jaar 24 blokke wees wat met quilt-as-you-go tegniek aan mekaar gesit sal word. Ek moet erken ek is 7 blokke agter, want dit lyk makliker as wat dit is! ...die oefen vat toe bietjie lank! Ons doen ook elke maand ‘n vriendskaps kwilt vir iemand in die groep, waar ons hulle help om die blokke te stik en as daar tyd is selfs sommer aan mekaar begin werk. Ons is al so gekonfyt in die speletjie dat dit elke keer vinniger gaan. Die snyer stuur aan vir die sorteerder, wat weer aanstuur vir die naaldwerksters! Dan stryk die strykers, net om weer te gaan na snyers! Die produksie lyn se rekord staan tans op 2 kwilts in minder as 3 uur...! Verder is ons reeds besig met ons tweede blok van die Mystery Quilt. Na baie swoeg het Almari uiteindelik die boodskap tuis gebring dat die eerste blok uit sterre moes bestaan, en ons weet nou die tweede een is harte! Net jammer Natasja het die memo bietjie laat gekry... shame en al haar ywerige hande werk moet weer oorgedoen word! Dis wonderlik om in ‘n groep te wees waar ons nie net by mekaar leer nie, maar ook mekaar se lewens deel! Dis ‘n voorreg en groot blessing! As ek terugkyk na die drie jaar wat ek al kwilt het ek so baie al geleer en as ek net na Dal en Almari kyk, kan ek sien daar’s nog soveel om te leer! Dit maak die reis opwindend en uitdagend (om die minste te sê!).

The Kwetterkwilters The Kwetterkwilters, under leadership of Susara van Wyk, started in 2008. The group consists of 7 members who get together every week for lots of chatting, laughing (and sometimes crying) and learning. The group is much more than just a quilt group. Over the years we have all become very special friends who share all life’s ups and downs with each other. Members are: Susara van Wyk, Marina Venter, Hester Meintjies, Laetitia Cilliers, Lynette du Toit, Beth Hunter and Corrianne van Velze. Our newest member is Beth Hunter, from the USA, who has many years of quilting experience. She has taught us many new things and we have an added bonus that she is able to tell us about all types of new and innovative quilting goodies, including books, directly from the USA! Beth recently introduced us to the making of fabric postcards. We have had such fun experimenting with these mini-quilts, that we all want to continue making more and more. She initiated a postcard swop with quilters in the USA and Canada, so we were all divided into groups and have made postcards to swop among each other. It has been exciting to make and receive such a diversity of postcards! We are currently busy with round 2 (there will be 3 rounds). We certainly plan to showcase some of the postcards at the Friendship meeting in June. During the past few years projects have included the making of three quilts that were donated and raffled for a good cause; sensory stimulation goodies for the elderly with Alzheimer’s disease and polar fleece blankets for Japan. We have also been busy among ourselves: In 2009 and early 2010, we organised a Round Robin among ourselves, making “skinny quilts” (table or bed runners), which have turned out beautifully! Some of which will certainly be entered as group quilts at next year’s National quilt Festival. Last year we made two miniature log cabin blocks for each member’s birthday according to colours specified by the receiver. Some stunning little quilts were made, which will be showcased as well. This year each member will receive a block of her choice from everyone else, when it is her birthday. The blocks will be very different and we are sure some stunning quilts will be the result! They will be shown at a future Show and Tell. Some of the members of the group have started challenging themselves, by making small “art quilts” according to a theme every few months. Themes so far have been: “Spring, Dragons, Passion”. On 10 March 2012, Marianne Niemandt presented a morning course on the use of colour. We had lots of fun playing with nearly a 1000 two inch squares in many different hues and values. We were challenged to put together a pallet of colours we don’t really like and therefore never use and also choose colours to represent certain emotions. Marianne also showed some of her beautiful quilts and pointed out how she chose certain colours for each one. We regularly do other interesting things, such as go to movies, arrange picnics, visit interesting places, go away for the weekend, etc. The Kwetterkwilters have many plans for the coming year, which will certainly serve to enhance the bonding among us! Ort I or Ortn’t I?

Ort: A snippet or leftover bit of thread, Crumb, scraps. By Danielle Tebb Still confused? An ort is that piece of embroidery thread left in the needle that is to short to continue sewing with, or the piece left over when you have finished stitching with a particular colour, but is too ratty to keep for another project. Many years ago, a good friend and embroidery teacher taught me to save these oddments to use as stuffing in small projects such as scissor of tassel fobs. It is a very thrifty way of obtaining stuffing and it usually proves a more effective means of stuffing small objects, as orts don’t have the springiness of polyester fibrefill, thereby allowing you to stuff the item more compactly. Stranded cotton is by far the most versatile, not to mention, colourful thread to use, but there is no reason why other kinds, such as tapestry or knitting wools, cannot be used – you simply need to store different types of threads separately. Likewise, because dark threads may show through in light coloured projects, it is a good policy to isolate them from the main pile, and for much the same reason, I also discard metallic threads. As a general rule of thumb, leftover threads should be cut to lengths anywhere between ¼ inch and ½ inch, and gradually accumulated until there is more than enough to be used effectively, and it is surprising just how much is required to stuff a small project! I cut up the shorter lengths immediately, but I put the long threads to one side and keep them handy for minor jobs such as sewing buttons onto naïve embroideries and the like – and it’s amazing how handy a stockpile of assorted coloured threads can be. Orts need to be stored in a clear lidded container as it is the only way that you can appreciate the fascination of watching all the different colours form past projects build up. You might enjoy the look so much that you keep the container permanently as decoration! Clear, fill able, Christmas ornaments look fantastic packed with orts, and for the productive stitcher, an annual ornament containing that year’s worth of project threads is highly possible. Additionally, when using orts for purely decorative purposes, simply experiment! Try cutting the threads in different lengths, adding metallic threads of even including ones of different weights and textures – it’s easy to make your ‘ort’ament truly unique. Most importantly, don’t see this sort of recycling as a chore – make it an art form, and remember that we are lucky enough to do for pleasure what our grandmothers had to do for necessity.

WORKSHOP ETIQUETTE By Allyson Rischbieter (Teacher Liaison GRG) I found this terrific article in a previous GRG newsletter. Allyson Rischbieter compiled it and with her permission we are publishing it in our news letter. Workshops provide you with an opportunity to learn new techniques and new projects. For a novices or beginners it is a means by which they can LEARN. Most workshops will not end the day with “X” number of finished items, but there should be a lot of new ideas bouncing around in your head. (Tip – write them down while they are fresh). Most classes will require more work at home. Some classes are for techniques only. Read the workshop advertising and be sure you thoroughly understand what is being taught. Teachers spend a considerable amount of time preparing for classes/workshops. You will be provided with a supply list. Read that over very carefully. It is taken for granted that courtesy, consideration, punctuality, common sense and good manners are on that list even though they are not listed. Go over the supply list provided by your instructor and put all of the supplies in one container, bag etc. and check your list. Bring ALL of the supplies listed. (Tip – if in doubt, BRING IT). When your sewing machine is listed on the supply sheet, it is up to you to make sure a day in advance that it is in good working condition, i.e. clean, oiled, bulb works, new needle and spare needles, bobbins, etc. are available. If you are borrowing a machine, the same applies – come earlier to ensure the machine is set up and bring your own cotton. If the needle breaks you will be expected to replace it. Make sure you know how to use this machine before the class and check the tension beforehand. You do not want to lose precious class time making adjustments and you cannot expect the other students to have to wait for you. It is not the responsibility of the Teacher to ensure this is in order for you. Punctuality is a priority. Try to be there at least 15-30 minutes before starting time. You must set up your machine, supplies, cutting board etc. next to you. Check whether you are required to bring your own iron and board. When your instructor starts at a given time, give her your total and complete attention, take notes and be quiet so all members can learn every student to thoroughly understand every phase and step of the lesson and get what they paid for. Please do not be late, as you disrupt the class and you have to catch up and this not fair to everyone. If you still need to purchase items for the class please attempt to buy this prior to the class starting. Teachers want to teach, they want each and everyone’s total attention – if you don’t understand or question something, put up your hand and wit to be acknowledged and ASK. However, if you think you have a better way, leave it for the end of the class or talk to your teacher one on one as she goes around the classroom. The instructor needs to give everyone an equal amount of attention. Don’t forget to pack your lunch if it is a full day class or over a lunch period. Lunch normally lasts 30 minutes, which is socializing time too. Lots of students bring cameras to class, be sure to ask permission before taking photos. Be a neat student – put clippings, threads, etc where they belong. Pack away items you have borrowed and ensure the area is left how you found it. The instructor would be grateful to receive a photo emailed to her of the finished project.

The challenge is open to all quilters permanently residing on the African continent. Each side of the finished quilt should be between 50 and 100 cm. The quilt must be hand or machine quilted and bound. The quilt must have three layers: top, backing and batting. Only high quality fabrics should be used for the main construction. Embellishments and other surface design treatments are permitted. The quilt must have a 4" wide sleeve on the back for hanging. A cloth label with your name and telephone number MUST be sewn to the back of the quilt. The quilt MUST depict the theme "Dreams". Entries must be the entrant's own original design. Any source of inspiration MUST be declared. Entrants must submit TWO photos of their entry by email for pre-selection. One flat full shot (including borders) and a close up of the detail. Each photo should be between 1 and 5 MB in size. Each entry must include the title of the quilt, a description of it, the techniques used, as well as a declaration that the design is your own original work. Any source of inspiration must be declared. Entries must be emailed to challenge@iqcafrica.com Entries close on 1 May 2012. The South African Quilters Guild appointed panel of judges will then invite successful entrants to send their quilts for final selection. Successful entries will be displayed as a special collection at IQCAfrica 2012 and entrants will each receive a Certificate of Exhibition. Quilts will be returned to the entrants after the event.

This is NOT a competition and no prizes will be awarded. The purpose of this challenge is to showcase the best of Africa's quilting talent.

Mix a packet of lemon jelly with the warm water as instructed. Add a tin of condensed milk and mix. Then add a tin of drained crushed pineapple and mix. Pour onto a base of tennis biscuits. Cool for at least 2 hours. Before serving, add a layer of whipped cream and sprinkle with crushed flake.

 Roll left over fabric strips on an empty toilet tissue roll. Gently not to stretch, and you won't have to re-iron or search for that certain strip. Line them up in a shoe box, mark box as to colour.  A good tip when washing flannel so that all those loose ends don't tangle is put it in a pillowcase first. I wash "like" colours together and dry them the same way. No more tangles mess when done!  I know at least 10 people who are having babies, and of course they all want quilts. My husband just lost his job and we don't have a lot of extra money right now for material, so I started cutting up old receiving blankets to make scrap quilts! They have all turned out beautiful! It's amazing what you can come up with in a pinch! Now I have people bringing me their old blankets too! Cool, huh?  To restore old blocks/quilts, try the following recipe: 1 Gallon Water 1 Quart Buttermilk 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice Soak quilt in mixture then wash in mild detergent. Many of us have leftover wool from knitting jerseys for either adults or children, even grandchildren. And one of the wonderful things that we quilters do is keep our hands busy, not matter where we are. We support many children’s charities that constantly need beanies etc for them, but have you ever thought of the ELDERLY? Here is a pattern for a very easy beanie for adults. Feel free to give this pattern to anyone who would like to do some good for the elderly. Hand the finished beanies in at the meeting to Ina Meyer. Thank you so much!! 1. EASY BEANIE FOR ADULTS Cast on 72 stitches using chunky wool and No.6mm needles and leave a long tail for sewing up the beanie. Row 1 – Knit 1, purl 1 to the end of the row. Row 2 – knit Repeat these 2 rows until you have knitted 10 rows Now continue in stocking stitch and knit 16 rows. Next row: sl 1, *knit 12, k 2 tog, repeat from * to the last stitch, k 1. Next row and every alt row: sl 1, purl to the end. Next row: s 1 * knit 11, k 2 tog, repeat from * to the last stitch, k1, Next row : s 1, * knit 10, k 2 tog, repeat from * to the last stitch, k1, Continue to decrease in this way until there are 37 stitches. Then decrease on every row as follows: Next row : s 1, p 2 tog, p 5, p 2 tog repeat to the last stitch p1. Next row: s 1 k 4 k 2 tog, repeat to the last stitch k 1. Next row: s 1 P 2 tog, p 3, p 2 tog repeat to the last stitch p 1 Next row: s 1 k 2, k 2 tog repeat to the last stitch k 1 Next row: s 1 p 1 p 2 tog repeat to the last stitch p 1 Next row: s 1 , k 2 tog x 5, k 1 = you will be left with 7 stitches. Cut the wool leaving a long tail and thread the tail through a large wool needle and then thread the needle through the 7 stitches on the knitting needle.
