A TRIBUTE TO WOMEN Oftentimes we take our loved ones for granted, we also hurt the ones that love us the most. The value of a wife or a mother is realized not everyday, only when we step into their shoes for a while to fulfill a function. Countless meals cooked and served with love, consumed unfeelingly by the partakers Who do not realize that the prized ingredient in the recipe is the love of the woman for her spouse and family. The Crown of human creation is woman. She has beauty, grace and fragrance that turn the heads of men and melt the most stubborn hearts of stone. She has her empire at home, now the empire is expanding into male bastions. Donâ€&#x;t be alarmed --------- they create, they have created you and me, havenâ€&#x;t they! Not a mean achievement, is it? ~Prof. S.R. NAIR~

I‟m writing this sitting in the Cape Town International Airport, while I‟m waiting for my flight to Lanseria, after the Festival in Stellenbosch. What a wonderful festival it has been! A good many Jacaranda Quilters attended the festival, it was lovely to bump into a well-know face/person from time to time, to exchange hello‟s asking what classes the other person had done, or was going to do. There were a large variety of classes, which were well attended by our members. I believe that between us, we will have learnt a great many new things. I look forward to seeing some of the projects that were started at the festival at future Show and Tell‟s. Die Stellenbosch Kwiltfees was regtig „n fees! I was especially encouraged to see so many quilts made and entered in the competition by Jacaranda Quilters. The committee is really proud of each and every one who entered one or more quilts: Marianne Niemandt, Petro van Rooyen, Jaycee Kriek, Ina Meyer, Ethelda Erasmus, Danél Muller, Enid Viljoen, Marina Venter, Carin Scheepers, Marthie Janse van Vuuren , Debbie du Toit and Claire Wallace. Congratulations to the following members, whose work was awarded with a prize: NAME Marianne Niemandt Ethelda Erasmus Jaycee Kriek Enid Viljoen Petro van Rooyen Debbie du Toit

PRIZE Judge‟s Choice (theme quilt) Third (Innovative small) Highly commended (Benartex Challenge) First (Under 18) Third (Art large) First (Innovative large) Third (Benartex Challenge)

We are proud of your achievements!! Congratulations to the Wapad Quilters who entered a group quilt, called “Pond Life”. It is a very colourful quilt, which caught everyone‟s eye. This home group, the oldest group of our guild, has entered a group quilt a number of times before. The committee challenges other home groups to enter a group quilt in 2013. We look forward to seeing some of our groups represented in Bloemfontein! Start saving for this Festival, which will be held from 1 to 7 July 2013. (You‟ll need a couple of extra blankets and a hot water bottle!!) Visit their blog at oranjekwilters.blogspot.com June Friendship Meeting We had a super Friendship meeting in June. A few days before, we were very worried that i t would be freezing cold. Fortunately the weather warmed up and we were able to enjoy our tea in the garden. The quilts on display were stunning and Show and Tell very inspiring. We had quite a large number of members who participated in the potholder exchange. They looked so colourful as one came into the church. A big thank you to Claire and Dal who undertook to hang up and display of all the quilts. You did a great job!

Sensory stimulation quilts and other articles A huge thank you to all our members who took the time to make sensory stimulation projects. Sylvia was so impressed with all the lovely articles and took a number of these home to display them at other Alzheimer groups. We divided the articles among three different organisations in Pretoria: Susan Strydom huis, Huis van Rensburg and Kgsano Ke Maaltla HBC (a non-profit organisation based in Atteridgeville, who cares for elderly and home bound patients in the community). The committee is in the process of arranging visits to the three centres so that we can see what is being done with the articles. As soon as dates and times are available, we will let all members know, as it would be great if some of you can jo in us. Mussies/knitted beanies Thank you to all who so generously knitted caps for cancer patients and the elderly. Ina stopped counting when she had received 120 beanies. There were many more and all were thankfully received by Aletta, from Susan Strydom huis. Didn‟t you all like the colourful Beanie tree on the stage? Our hearts go out to……….. Cathy Laing from P‟s and Q‟s on the passing away of her husband Bruce, after a short illness. Cathy, we are thinking of you. Congratulations to…………….. Alet Davy on achieving her judge‟s certificate. We know that it was a challenge, Alet and are especially proud of you ! It is so good to have another judge in our Guild, who will be able to assist in judging local guild competitions. Petro van Rooyen, who was awarded “Master Quilter” status. Petro‟s quilt “Who‟s binding is it anyway?” won first prize in the Innovative category. Well done, Petro! New Committee members Welcome to Marthie Janse van Vuuren who has volunteered to take on the secretarial duties of the guild committee. When you visit the library table at the next Friendship meeting, you will see another friendly face there. Welcome to Kobie Coetzee, who has volunteered to take over the responsibility for the Guild library from Martie Lombard. Martie was responsible for the library for 8 years and has really changed the face of the library. She started with a sm all collection of books and has managed to expand it substantially. Thank you Martie for your dedication, enthusiasm and hard work. We know that your protégée is in good hands! Resignation Marianne Niemandt has represented the Jacaranda Quilters at National level for three years and has decided that she wants a break from the committee. Thank you, Marianne for your dedication and effort. We will miss you on the committee, but know that we can always turn to you for advice. Enjoy the rest period! Life style Festival on Women’s Day 9 August 2011. Please join us at Sammy Marks house on Tuesday 9 August to celebrate Women‟s Day. Details are published elsewhere in the newsletter. By the time you receive this newsletter winter will be almost over and we can start looking forward to warmer weather. Although I‟m looking forward to this I realize that we will appreciate spring more after a cold winter than if we never had a winter. Experiencing the damp cold in Stellenbosch, made me appreciate our dry and sunny winter days even more! Lekker kwilt!

At the recent SAQG committee meeting our guild was asked again what we do to share and care in our community. The committee is aware that there are a number of home groups who have done specific charity work this year. Please let Corrianne or any of the committee members know what you have done, so that this may be passed on to the SAQG. Any members who are involved in teaching patchwork and quilting to disadvantaged persons, please let us know. We would like to hear what you are doing and perhaps offer assistance. The assistance could be in the form of a financial contribution, fabrics and notions or even sewing machines and other equipment. All that is required is a written request accompanied by a well set out proposal and estimation of costs involved.

Love is the thread that binds us. ~Author Unknown~

SAQG is also concerned that there are not enough young people interested in patchwork and quilting and encourage all guilds to pay special attention to the younger generation. The Jacaranda quilters are especially proud of the young people in Warmbad (Bela-Bela) under the guardianship of Rita Cloete, who have become very keen needlewomen. And our own Jaycee Kriek won first prize with his beautiful quilt! But his is not enough. Any quilter who wants to promote patchwork and quilting among the younger generation (under 16‟s) and needs some help, please contact any one of the committee members so that we can discuss how we may be of assistance. Financial assistance may also be asked for and we will see what we can do. Because of the emphasis on Share & Care and Development, it was decided to add another portfolio to the committee, namely a Share & Care coordinator. More details will be provided at the next Friendship meeting.

Laat ons asseblief weet indien enige lede betrokke is by enige liefdadigheidsprojekte.

Lifestyle Festival / Lewensstyl fees 9 August 2011 We have been approached by Annemarie Carelse from the SA Culture and Historical Museum to join them on Woman‟s day (9 August 2011) at the Sammy Marks Museum for a Lifestyle Festival. The Jacaranda Quilters will have an area set aside where we can show some quilts. We will also have tables to sit around and work. The idea is to display quilts and encourage non-members to learn about patchwork and quilting. It is an excellent opportunity to promote our guild and our passion for our craft. The committee will be at the museum from approximately 08:30 until 14:00 or 15:00. All members are invited to join us for a lovely day in the garden. Bring some handwork and a fold up chair and use a few hours to catch up on hand work and friendship/fellowship. If there are me mbers who will bring one or two quilts for display, contact Corrianne. It will be much appreciated.

Dear Jacaranda Quilters Thank you for all your efforts in creating many beautiful texture blankets and activity quilts , as well as some activity aprons and fidget sleeves. All of you absorbed my February talk and remembered and incorporated the tips on how to make the most sensory impact e.g. by using contrasting colours, and attaching the objects to be felt very securely so they can't be pulled off, eaten or broken! Congratulations to the ‘Silver lakes Dollas’ who submitted the most articles - some of which were really fun and interesting. I enjoyed “judging” your creative efforts on 11th June, before handing out the materials to the selected homes e.g. Atteridgeville community, Van Rensburg old age home in Danville and the Susan Strydom Home. I have been taking some of the articles with me to a few of the homes and the response has been very good. Lots of comments have been elicited about the quilts from the dementia folk themselves as well as the staff, who have all commented on how beautifully they have been made. We put a short article in the Gauteng Alzheimer’s Memory newsletter, with a photograph of the two ladies from Atteridgeville accepting the donated materials. Some of the articles will be put on display at the World Alzheimer’s Day seminar to be held on the 21st September 2011, to showcase the work of the Jacaranda Quilters’ Guild and to bring about awareness of the project which has linked quilters and the Gauteng branch of the S.A Alzheimer’s association. My dream is that this collaboration will continue and eventually develop into a national project between quilters and Alzheimer’s SA, so that we can raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease, h ighlight the achievements that are possible when creative people like quilters, work together with those inflicted with this disease by stimulating remaining abilities and memories, and acknowledge and exhibit the skills and generosity of SA quilters. I must say, this project together with you has been a wonderful experience for me and I can’t thank the Jacaranda Quilters enough! With appreciation Sylvia Birkhead.

Ek het via my gunsteling tydverdryf kombersie afgekom.......

“Google” op „n vrek oulike

Die Babette Kombersie.... die kombersie is vir die eerste keer deur „n bekende kwilter en ontwerper, Kaffe Fassett gehekel. Hy het ook die pragtige “Jewel Squares” kwilt patroon ontwerp en dit is vanwaar die Babette sy oorsprong gekry het. Lees gerus meer hieroor by:  

http://sew mamasew.com/blog2/2008/02/february-16-quilt-of-the-day/ www.scratchcraft.com/blog/?p=688 -

Loslappie Groete ~Gerda

My love for quilting started when me and my family moved in 2000 to Birmingham, Alabama, USA. I was not allowed to work, so I was looking for something to fill my days with. I joined the Bobbin Lace group which was part of the Fibre Guild in Birmingham, AL. Through the guild I met another South African lady, Sharon Mc Lauglin. Together we started to explore all the wonderful quilt shops and decided to make a quilt together. That was the first quilt I‟ve made and got the idea from the book “ Fabric Makes the Quilt” In 2002, we returned to South Africa with a crate full of quilting fabric. I joined the Bobbin Lace guild in Pretoria and I met a very good friend, Tina du Plooy, who was also a quilter and we started to quilt together. I joined the Jacaranda Quilters Guild and through them, I learned a lot and for the rest I taught myself and developed my own style and technique. Since 2002, I made a lot of quilts for myself and as gifts to friends and family. In 2008, the Jacaranda Quilters Guild had a challenge to make an Africa themed quilt with the soccer of 2010 in mind. We received a piece of fabric with soccer balls on it and we had to use 80% of it in the quilt plus some African print fabric. I made one in the shape of Africa, made out of small hexagons of all different African fabrics. It is half handmade nd and machine made. Was awarded the 2 price for it. I also made another one with a soccer ball in the middle and st little balls floating out of it and received 1 price for that one. In 2009, I had the opportunity to go Hong Kong to attend a real Chinese wedding. My nephew Aldo Kriel married a lovely Chinese girl ,Phoebe Lam. At the wedding, I promised them a quilt as a wedding gift. They went to Venice on their honeymoon and got the idea for the quilt from that. My sister, Jorieke Kriel, first fabric pained the centre panel of Venice and I started to design the quilt. I suggested that she painted four smaller ones which I placed at each corner of the centre one. I used the Bargello design that is flowing out of the centre panel while using the colours in the paintings. At a point I got stuck about what to do in the corners, my son Stephen helped me with his knowledge of web design to get the flowing effect. Ever since we returned from the USA, I had a full time job and could only practice my quilting passion during the weekends. In 2008, I resigned from my full time job and concentrated full time on my Quilting. From then on, I share my knowledge with everybody, old and young, who ever wants to practice this craft and in the same time fulfil their creative power. It is so fulfilling to create and produce an original creation . In November 2010, I had an exhibition of all my student‟s work for the last two years and it was wonderful to see what they have achieved. It is wonderful to see how they grow into this craft and with their inspiration I grow as well. Everyday I learn a new thing or technique and even from my novise students they give ideas that I share with everybody again. The last two years , I‟ve grown to be a better person and I am so gratefull to have met so many lovely and ki nd people to enrich my life. Quilting was a therapy for me and will always be that way. All I can say is, thank you to everyone and Happy Quilting! It‟s Life! I teach different techniques from beginners to advanced and do fun projects. One thing I enjoy to do is to Paint with Fabric. This a technique where you use confetti size pieces of fabric, wool etc and you paint with that on cloth like the Haena I did. That is my pride and joy. I teach At Die Werksmandjie, Wierda Park, Centurion and at Purr-fect Stitch in Monument Park , Pretoria

After the Quilt-festival in Stellenboch I think everybody is so inspired and cannot wait to start with something colourful and new to display at the next festival in Bloemfontein. Gewapen met „n lys van telefoonnommers is ons Jakaranda -girls gereed om van hulle te nooi om so bietjie van die fees-klasse vir ons te kom aanbied in 2012. 30 July is the Trapunto class with Petro and on the 17 th of September the Painting with Thread class with Debbie. Because the Painting with Thread is a relative new and costly method, many of us will not have all the goodies to be able to do this class, Debbie wrote the following piece to set our minds at ease.

“This course is based on my personal experience and my methods are techniques right for me and for my work. Try what I suggest, but don’t be afraid to experiment. Thread painting offers unlimited stitching possibilities, because, fabric motion is not r estricted by the presser foot (not used) or the feed dog (either lowered or covered, depending on the machine). An embroidery hoop holds the fabric taut and is moved in the desired stitch direction. Control of the hoop movement requires practice. Before be ginning any kind of free-motion piece, experiment with thread tension, threads, and fabrics to create different effects. Free -motion thread painting can be worked on all machine types that have a free-motion quilting or darning foot. The course will be about techniques in thread painting. You’ll be making samples of different methods. Class requirements:  Sewing machine – cleaned and oiled  Free-motion quilting or darning foot (if your machine uses a plate to cover feed dog, please remember to bring)  Scissor  Fine permanent marker (black)  Pencil  Notebook  White pencil (optional)

Kit: R300 Includes everything you need for class. Special hoop, all the different threads, stabilizers, fabrics, machine needles, appli qué paper If there is any doubt or uncertainty please call me at 082 775 9983.”

~Debbie du Toit ~ Verskeie dames het by my kom navrae doen oor Doortjie se klas genaamd “Sandsterre in „n bakpoeierblik”, die betrokke klas is „n twee-dag klas. Remember 50% of the course fees are payable upon writing your name on the list as a prospective attendant. Groete

Get your school involved in a community textile project for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Quilts 4 London are aiming to collect 14,000 pennants, one for each athlete taking in part in the Olympic or Paralympic Games. Your pupils could make a pennant which will be given to an athlete in 2012 and be part of the national Cultural Olympiad. A Quilts4london Textile Pennant is a special gift from you to an athlete of the Olympics, Paralympics and Special Olympics, as a memento of their participation in the 2012 Games. This project gives quilters, felt makers, embroiderers, cross stitchers, textile artists, in fact anyone who sews (or not!), the opportunity to express their support, through the medium of fabric, fiber and stitch, and become part of the whole Olympic event in London 2012. The Pennants can be as simple or elaborate as you require, and they can be made by anyone regardless of their level of ability or age. They can be made using any textile media - felt, fabric, cross stitch, embroidery, painted fabric, beaded - in fact anything. They need to be A3 sized (12” x 16”) (42cm x 30cm) overall and suggestions and instructions can be found on our website www.quilts4london.org.uk Designs for the Pennants could be inspired by your regional culture or history, sport or British traditions - the more diverse the better. This project is a fantastic way to bring us all together to support the athletes in London 2012, and a wonderful way to showcase all the diverse forms of textiles that exist. An Education Pack is now available. Schools, scouts, guides, after-school clubs plus many more groups can take part making Pennants for Quilts4london in addition to creating Pennants to keep for their own displays. It‟s a wonderful way to showcase the creativity of children and to get them involved in the lead up to the Olympics. Look onwww.quilts4london.org/gettinginvolved/educationpack For more info contact : Marianne Niemandt 012 660 2280 082 680 9548 marianne@niemandt.com Making a Pennant couldn‟t be simpler! Choose a shape (approx the size of A3 (12"x16") but no bigger) - see our template ideas which you can download and print Choose a design - check out the Inspiration area for ideas or just choose whatever you like (please note the information relating to use of Olympic branding and 2012 media) Make your Pennant (see our various guides and videos on YouTube) Add your details to a label and fix to the back of the Pennant Display / Exhibit / Photograph and upload to Gallery Send into us at the Project address so we can display at exhibitions and distribute to competing athletes Make another one! Dear Jacaranda quilters, From time to time I receive requests from somebody for a quilt to be made for him/her.

Beneath the Southern Sky is a travelling exhibition of contemporary textile works to be displayed at the Australasian Quilt Convention, Craft Expo Auckland and other venues in 2012. All textile artists are invited to submit an entry exploring the theme Beneath the Southern Sky. Each work will be in a 40x100cm (W x L) vertical banner format and up to 30 works may be selected. The closing date for entries is 25 January 2012. International entries are welcome.

At the meeting I asked if the persons who are willing to work on commission would come forward and put their names on a list so that I can start compiling a database of these quilters. We have not yet collected any names. I am sure there should be quite a few quilters out there who will work in this way. Please ask your group members if anyone is interested, so that I can refer the requests to the right person. Take care ~Corrianne ~

GOODIE BAGS Am I the only one who loves to get a Goody Bag or are there some of you that also loves it. A Goody Bag for me is like a Lucky Packet. There is always something handy included. Well it is time to start collecting donations for our Goodie Bags for “ Kwilt Ini-Bos “ in October. Every lady registered receives a goodie bag and we would like these to be full of fun stuff! If anyone would like to contribute a little something, I would appreciate it. Items can represent your shop, your business, or be from you personally just wishing attendees a great time! Perhaps the home groups can participate in this event. Things like pens, key chains, quilt related goodies, etc... fun, useful, imaginative, mysterious, whatever you can think of! We are assembling 40 bags, so items should be donated in this number, and we do need to have them by Sept 15th. You can also hand your Goodies in at our June meeting with Rita Cloete and if you haven’t got it ready by then you can hand it in by me before October. I hope you all have great hearts and open hands.

It took approximately 160 hours to quilt and bind. Lyn started quilting the first section on 5th January and quilted 20 sections in total, the largest was 7.5metres or 24.6 feet long. Good Books

Aangesien ek nou 'n voltydse tuisteskepper is kan ek myself verlustig in stokperdjies soos kookkuns, kreatiewe brei, laslap en kwilt, orgidee kweek en lees. Dit is juis my liefde vir boeke, wat van jongs af nommer een in my lewe was, wat my gemotiveer het om by die JQG biblioteek betrokke te raak.

Can you recommend good quilt books? Please share it with us.

Thread Painting with Style Author: Nancy Prince 127 pages In this comprehensive reference guide, award-winning quilter Nancy Prince shows you how to thread paint with style. This highly detailed instructional book walks you through thread, supplies, stitches, methods, shading, sketching, distortion, and a very useful troubleshooting chapter. This ultimate technique book concludes with six projects so you can practice everything you need to know about thread painting.

Skakel my gerus met oulike boek voorstelle of as julle na ‘n kwilt patroon of idée soek. Ek help graag. Baie groete
