1970 JOURNEY THROUGH TYPOGRAPHY

1970’s STYLE Let us look at some of the history behind the typographic design styles we see today. Let us go back to a time gone by, the 1970’s. This era of architectural exploration gave 2D letterforms a 3D perspective. The 1970’s was a time of breaking free from the status quo of the typographic industry of the time which was influenced by the more traditional, but life-less Swiss style. It was an era which favoured experimentation, hypnotic pattern and fluid compositions. Talented typographers such as Jan van Toorn provided critical alternatives to usual design world conventions and Jurriaan Schrofer’s work, oftern referred to as the ‘Restless typographer’ reflected this period of pioneering.

“A let ter is a pure thing. If you make something Chinese of it, it becomes kitsch.”

Jurriaan Schrofer played a large role in the formation of the Association of Graphic De signers in 1969. Compared to previous years, this made available to people of all backgrounds the conditions for which professional recognition and participation in craft untions was possible.

results in success”
