WHY? In first world countries today, we have many wonderful facilities that are provided by our government or business owners. Many of the large complexes in cities are maintained by our local councils. These developments range from hospitals, university campuses, transportation facilities, car-parks, airports, cafes, large shopping complexes to drive-through car washes, they must all accomodate a similar thing, people flow.

Humans are inquisitive and will generally source a pathway forward, however, if we are comparing this with efficient methods or the need to draw people in to create business, you will need a clear and consise way-finding information system to direct people flow. Efficient direction of traffic has large benefits, it draws people back, increases sales, evokes purpose, releases congestion, raises the professional image , enhances the understanding and involvement in the physical space and welcomes back the weary traveller. Navigational systems are used today for buildings, series of forms , web platform and many other mediums and different environments which we subconsciously use everyday.

EXAMPLE 1 - BUILT ENVIRONMENT Location: Salamanca Square, Hobart This is the center-piece of the the Hobart waterfront. Salamanca Place has a positive vibe and a complimenting natural landscape of waterfront, sandstone buildings with a back-drop of boutique apartments. To draw people in a wayfinding system is needed to indicate the eateries that are available behind the curve of sandstone facade, a space to rest, to read, to dine, to party or to let the kids play during the day. Salamanca Place is centered with a water fountain graced with metal artwork. Neon lights should lace the rim and beam up through the fountain jets to to enhance ambiance and people draw.

The font used should be consistant and sensitive to the spatial composition. The socio-economid demographic of people will be wealthy tourists, business owners, people of influence or local Hobartians out for a good time.

< Brass arrows set into cobblestone pavings. Lit by LED lights at night. In sensitivity to the heritage environement, surface mount signage would present well. > 3 of 4
