Heating and energy aims The main Goal is to create a self-sufficient Gaming Museum. In doing so it will fit into the Golden Age cleanup scheme, (see Portfolio/ methodology report form more info). To achieve this goal, passive house technology must be incorporated into the design. This will utilize thermal gain and minimize thermal loss within the building. To do this the structure will have to be exposed or the shell of the building must surround the structural system. The less doors and windows used to connect the outside to the inside as it will reduce thermal loss. Renewable energy systems must be included into the design, either through solar power or wind power systems as hydro is not an option due to the site location. This system must be cable of powering the building, the Heating and ventilation system chosen for the design.
Barton, J. (2021).
Main Strategies of Systems and Integration
2 Structural Aims The structure chosen will need to be competent in supporting the curved shell and the spanning of the interior floors. The exterior structure will need be malleable and light weight whilst the interior needs to be light weight and capable of large spanning. Systems such as Mild steel and Reinforced concrete will be analyzed to decide which is the best option for the galactic style design. The secondary structure needs to be light weight to reduce to dead weight of the building. The foundation system will have to be carefully considered as it will provide an anchor system for the entire building. The subsoil and the weight of the building will determine the best foundation system for the building. Barton, J. (2021).

Bed rock and local Quarrys Subsoil info
The sites subsoil is a mixture of clay, Silt, Sand, and gravel. Silt is a very poor type of subsoil to have as it retains water. The soil also contains clay which isn’t ideal when it comes to constructing buildings. These are very bad types of subsoil as it causes the building to move or even collapse. There is also sand and gravel in the subsoil. This will help to drain the water from the site and reduce the possibility of the building moving. This all depends on what type of soil is more dominant in the site area. This information will help to understand the limitations of foundation options that can be used one the site. From the image from the left, you can see the local quarries in the area. It would be good to utilize these resources to provide stone for the building. This will hopefully reduce delivery time and hopefully reduce costs. It will also help in investing to the local community of Huddersfield.

Assimilated U.S.S Voyager (CBS Studios. 2018). Form Influences: The Beijing National stadium, Al Janoub and the U.S.S Voyager spaceship design were big influences in the shell form of the gaming areas of the future gaming museum. This form helped in creating an organic space themed fade of the building. As you can see, curves are very important to this design as it will create a warm and natural feeling when approaching the museum. This would be just like the landscape of Huddersfield. The facade style of the Beijing stadium may be used to create façade interest and detailing to the design. The Sphere form from the La geode is a huge influence on the designing of the grand entrance of the FGM. This will create an inviting statement on when approach the museum. It also creates the perfect form for overlaying AR images to be seen by all approaching angles. This feature will allow the museum to show off to the public what it’s like in the museum. In the case of the Geode, it’s used as a cinema where it is still used for displaying films on the inside. The FGM will also use the form to create a mixed reality on the inside of the building.

Able, C. (2009).
Kunsthaus Graz Location: Graz, Austria Architect: Sir Peter Cook and Colin Fournier The Kunsthaus is the sole influence of the Future Gaming museum. Both designs are very similar in their organic forms. Its Portal frame would be ideal for and capable of supporting the museum as it has already worked for the Kunsthaus. The cladding choice would work just as well to form the FGM’s facade, but it depends on the energy system chosen for the building. Able, C. (2009).

Structural Strategies
14 Structural Materials Concrete Structure:
Reinforced concrete is great for structures and it’s amazing when it comes to its resistance with fire. The structural material isn’t ideal for the main shell structure of the building as it will be too chunky and overlap the gaming areas where the treadmills are placed. The steel portal frame won’t do this. However, the concrete structure would be ideal for the interior structure as there is a lot of spanning and reinforced concrete is great for spanning. Not only will it have Rebar for reinforcement, but it will also have concrete fibres to prevent any cracking in the structure. This will give the building a longer life cycle and provide support for the Portal frame on each level. (Schofield, E. n.d).
(More than engineering.n.d).
(Studio, L. G. M. 2021).
Steel Portal frame structure:
The portal frame structure is used frequently in organic form structures. It may not be the best when it comes to strength to weight ratio, but it makes up for it with its durable and malleable properties. On the downside it will need to be painted with fire resistant paint as it doesn’t do well in fire conditions. The construction time for steel compared to concrete is a lot faster. with the weather so inconsistent it is best to erect the structure and shell as fast as possible. The structure can be prefabricated in sections before it reaches the site to reduce congestion. Therefore, the Mild steel portal frame was chosen for the facades structure. (Steel fabrication. u.d).
Glulam Structure:
Glulam is a versatile structural material when compared to steel structures. It can also be cheaper than steel when it is used for spanning. The material is great under conditions such as fire compared to steel the downside to using glulam is that it would provide a chunky structure that would overlap onto the floor spaces of the Virtual gaming rooms. Due to size and maintenance fees glulam will not be chosen for the FGM.
(Haiman, M. n.d)
Bubble Deck flooring:
Concrete Slab flooring:
This system was the most favourable option out of the flooring systems available. The bubbles help provide a strengthened light weight floorings system. The rebar will provide extra strength and tension in the system to prevent it from cracking and falling apart. This system is also the cost effective when compared. Therefore, it is the ideal material for the FGM.
(Sujith, G.S. 2011).
Slab is a traditional way to construct the flooring system of a building, but it uses a lot of concrete meaning it is not cost effective when compared to the bubble deck. Even though it has reinforced concrete it isn’t ideal for spanning long distances. The FGM has spanning of 15m in places so it isn’t an ideal and that’s why it won’t be used.
(Able, C. 2009)
Structural Strategies
15 Foundation
Damp Proof Course
(Reinforcement products. n.d)
Raft foundations
This system is basically one large reinforced concrete slab that covers the buildings entire floor space. This system is designed to spread the load of the building over the entire floor instead of it been on the pads under each structural column. This is a great system but with the sheer weight of the building it may cause building may sink as it’s floating on the subsoil. The system may not be suitable for the FGM. (Keller. n.d).
Best option
Pile foundations
The site analysis you can see that the subsoil is a mixture of clay, Silt, Sand, and gravel. Silt is a very poor type of subsoil to have as it retains water. The soil also contains clay which isn’t ideal when it comes to constructing buildings. This means that pile foundations would be more suitable for creating the safest foundation for the FGM.
In conditions where the subsoil isn’t suitable for loadbearing capacities for a building/ structure pile foundations are perfect option. Pile foundations will bypass the subsoil to reach the bedrock providing a solid foundation for the building. Pile foundations are suitable for larger buildings to prevent any displacement through the building during its life cycle.

VR contact lenses will provide projections on to the building to create a visual effect on its environment. Gaming images and the name will be provided on the Oval entrance to explain to the public what the museum is and its function. It will also provide the giant Ark that is above the building. This will act as a statement piece to attract attention to the museum, making it more alien like. The effects created by the contact lenses will reduce the overall cost of the building.

Passive House Technology
The design focuses on Passive house technology. The exterior shell off the building has been designed so will have no thermal breaks. The passive tech will be able to aid the CHP system in providing a constant temperature in the building. This will reduce the amount of electricity needed to heat the building. The less power used will mean that more can be sold back to the grid providing a more profitable museum. The concrete structure will help keep the building cool in the summer months and warm in the winter months by storing and releasing heat.

HOT AIR COLD AIR
Barton, J. (2021).
Circulation
You can see from the diagram that the grand entrance isn’t just for the virtual experience but it also helps when it comes to the circulation of the building as it helps the ventilation system by circulating hot and cold air through the different floor levels.
Enviromental Strategies
21 Heating and Ventilation System The combined heat and power unit was the best choice for the ventilation system. The CHP system will use natural gas to produce heat to turn the generators to produce electricity and heating for the building. This will be aided by the Solar panel cladding to produce electricity. The combination of both will mean that the CHP system will have to do a lot less work and burn less natural gas. This will help form the carbon neutral environment required by the FGM. The gas will only be burned when the solar panels don’t produce enough power. This is possible in the winter months when there is less sunlight. The CHP system is great for commercial and Residential buildings. It’s the most common choice for large commercial buildings such as the Future Gaming Museum. This makes it the perfect choice, EPA. (n.d).
(Research gate n.d).
Jain, s. (n.d).
Enviromental Strategies
22 Geothermal system The geothermal system will draw heat from the ground in the winter months and displace it back into the ground during the summer months. The system will exploit the free heating and cooling provided by the ground. The system needs minimal maintenance, it’s very cheap to run, and it is also environmental friendly. The down side to this product is that it is expensive to install. The system allows requires a certain amount of land for the building, luckily the FGMs site has enough land. There are other concerns like the possibility of using up the geothermal resources in the ground. This would mean that another system may need to be installed as a backup system make the start-up fees very expensive and it’s not within the budget for the possibilities of 2 systems. With this knowledge the CHP system will be the best option.

Solar Cladding Barton, J. (2021).
Wind Turbine
This system will be used on the main shell off the body (the section in black). The system can collect energy through the day and all the spare energy collected will be stored in batteries to provide energy through the night. The solar panels will provide electricity for the CHP system to reduce it consumption of natural gas making the building eco-friendly and suitable for the Golden Age project. Any spare energy that the building hasn’t utilised will be sold back to the grid to provide another source of income for the FGM. Due to the museum having a curved facade it makes it perfect for it to catch UV rays and the trajectory of the sun. This is why it was chosen to feature on the museum.
Turbines were considered to be a featured on the FGM to provide another source of electricity on the building. This technology is great for a renewable source of electricity in Huddersfield as there is a lot of wind due to its altitude and positioning. It would have been used for the same principles as the Solar panels. The down side to this is that they’re noisy and they are not popular amongst the public because they think they are an eye sore. The Arc was too expensive to be created for a feature and to support the windmills when there were other cheaper and more disguisable options. This is why the arc was used as a feature in the AR environment to prevent construction costs.

Mixed reality on
Barton, J. (2021).
Augmented reality
AR technology is used to overlay images onto the museum to help attract attention and show off what the museum is really about. The projections on the outside are used for 2 purposes. The first purpose is to project images of games and the game play inside the museum onto the exterior of the grand entrance. The second part is to create the giant arc above the building. The giant arc would have been too expensive and a waste of money when it could be created as a projection.
Materials
25 Polyurethane foam:
Resin floor:
The insulation used for the shell of the building will be Polyurethane foam this will form a tight seal throughout the entire shell of the museum. the reason for using this material was to prevent a thermal breaks to reeduce thermal loss and gain to aid the CHP system in keeping the building at a constant temprature. This system is cost effective and it will be a quickest way to provides insulation for the building with its curved form.
David, M. (n.d).
Resin will be used to form the floor of the museum to create a cheap version of a more expensive material such as marble/ stone. The issue with using resin flooring is that its smooth surface making it slippery when wet. The museum has weather simulations in the gaming areas making it not ideal. This is why large pieces of Aggregate will have to be added to the layers of the resin floor to provide as much grip as possible. This should hopefully eliminate the risk of slips/ falls.
Daukus, s. (2016).
Solar panel cladding:
Acoustic Plasterboard 12.5mm:
The Golden Age project required that all new buildings involved in the scheme should use and utilize renewable energy resources. This is why the FGM incorporated solar power cladding. This would make the building self-sufficient and eco-friendly. The reasoning behind all this is to reduce the town’s carbon footprint and this is why it is a key part in this design. The FGM has a large curved surface area making it ideal for catching as much sunlight as possible. This system will be like creating its very own solar farm. Any unused electricity that is stored in the batteries can sold back to the grid.
(MA metal architecture. 2014).
The acoustic Plaster board will provide insulation and reduce the travel of sound waves in the building. The plaster board has a 0.24W/mK. Thermal conductivity and falls under the BS EN520 category as types A and D Noise Stop. (n.d).
(Noise stop. n.d)
Flame Retardant Epoxy Glass Thermal Insulating Sheet.
The thermal insulation sheet will prent the spreat of fire between the stud walling allowing fires to be sectioned off to prevent it from spreading RS. (n.d).
RS. (n.d).
Materials
26 Escalator ramps
Barton, J. (2021). The museum has incorporated Curved escalator ramps to provide smooth transitions between the floors. These were needed for 3 purposes; the first was that portals appear at the access points of each floor. When the guests walk through these portals they will enter a rift to make it seem like they are being teleported between the floors. The ramps provide the safest way to do this to prevent any trips or falls. The second reason was to create disabled access for the physically challenged guests. This meant that they wouldn’t be missing out on the same experience as the other quests. The 3rd is the reasoning being the form of these escalator ramps. On entry the quests can see these ramps in their true form so they were made to look like an out of world feature just like it does on the exterior of the building and in the mixed reality world.

When the construction process starts the entire site will be barricaded off to protect the public by preventing them from walking on site. The working hours will be between 6am and 6pm as they are within standard working hours as well as prevent disruption to the public. Old Leeds road and Pine Street will be sectioned off at the Leeds road entrance for site access and delivers. This may cause some short delays/ disruptions on the road but in this case it should be fine as there is another entrance/ exit point.

CCTV (WSC . n.d). All hazardous substances such as Gas, fuel, and other forms of liquid must be stored in the safe area. When the site is closed, all equipment must be locked away safely. Vehicles and equipment will be stored on site. This means that the gates must be locked and CCTV will need to be installed. Appropriate fire fighting equipment will be provided in case it is needed. All workers are required to have a CSCS card to show that they know the appropriate health and safety procedures when working on site. When on site, all workers must wear appropriate PPE to protect themselves and others around them. The mild steel portal frame structure will be fabricated off site to reduce the number of people on site. This will reduce the amount of risks on site, providing a safer working environment. The construction process provided will also help eliminate any risks on site.

33 Fire Strategy
Fire escapes Sectioned gaming zones with roller shutter doors
Fire fighting control in the building:
The gaming rooms have roller shutter doors placed at the entrance points of each room. The other rooms have doors special fire resistant doors. This enables the areas rooms to be section in the case of fire. By doing so, it will prevent the fire from spreading allowing the drones to combat the fire to reduce response time. Each room in the FGM has their own fire fighting drones attached to the ceiling. If a fire manages to break out, drones will be released to combat the fire. The gaming rooms only will only have the Omnideck treadmills in them. This will reduce the amount compositional materials in these rooms to reduce the risk of fire. Some rooms require more furniture in them. These would be rooms like the café and spectator room. To reduce the risk, the materials/ furniture chosen will be fire resistant. These specialist fire fighting drones have been programed with the best techniques available for putting fires and because of their response time the fire will be neutralised in a matter of a few minutes because of their fire sensors. The drones don’t work alone as the sprinklers used for the weather simulator will aid in the process. This unique fire fighting system combined with its special room sectioning will eliminate the need for the tradition fire escape routes and fire fighters we use to have.
