your Community. your voice. Newbury BID (Business Improvement District) was established in 2012, following a YES vote from businesses based in the centre of Newbury.

Chamber update With planning well under way for 2015, the West Berks Chamber is eagerly awaiting the new year with fresh and innovative ideas, products and services for our members.

www.westberkschamber.tvchamber.co.uk

Together with a revised events programme, next year will provide a great opportunity for local businesses to make great connections. The Chamber Council will continue to lobby on behalf of the membership and represent the West Berks business community with all interested stakeholders. Newbury College has resubmitted its bid for funding to develop a studio school at the Monks Lane campus. Studio Schools, while similar to colleges, emphasise the use of work placements with a year-round opening and a nine-to-five working day. They offer academic and vocational qualifications, including A Levels and GCSEs, as well as paid work placements linked directly to employment opportunities. The Chamber continues to host business networking events in the area. Watch out for the Christmas business lunch on the 16th December at the Vineyard.

mean business?

The main aims of Newbury BID are to promote Newbury town and “enhance their (town centre businesses) trading environment”. I visited a number of local businesses in town to gather some thoughts about the work of the BID so far. Although some businesses said the BID felt like a drain on their resources, they could see positive changes around town, especially in relation to increased footfall.

festivals in particular), attract huge numbers of visitors to the town, making it vibrant and diverse, although some sole traders were dubious about whether they benefitted directly from this activity. . . . although some businesses said the BID felt like a drain on their resources, they could see positive changes around town. . .

One small business owner acknowledged that it was his responsibility to market and promote his own business, relying solely on BID events taking place at the opposite end of town wouldn’t necessarily improve his trade, or have an impact in his location.

I can certainly see that the Saturday market, which now extends a long way down Northbrook Street, is very exciting with an array of diverse stalls of food and merchandise.

When I asked businesses what improvements they would like to see, suggestions put forward were; a forum for networking and support, possibly marketing opportunities for local businesses at town centre events, and of course lower business rates.

What are your thoughts about how Newbury Town is evolving; do you see positive changes that enhance the trading environment? What else could be done in the current financial climate to support independent traders? How should money be spent in improving Newbury as an effervescent business district?

A few businesses expressed the concern that the BID is perhaps better suited to big businesses that might benefit more than small businesses, especially those in the centre of town and Parkway. The events and activities organised through the BID contractors (food

Are you a hunter or a farmer? Such hunters move around the room preying on the vulnerable trying to sell to them or at least secure a business card they can use to spam you with. A far better approach is to cultivate relationships just as a farmer cultivates a crop knowing that such regular care will lead to a bumper harvest and in networking terms that means building relationships by visiting the same events regularly

build relationships by visiting the same events regularly

and having one-to-one meetings with those who you want to know better. It is the dilemma when it comes to ad hoc networking versus more organised regular events. If you only see someone infrequently it can be as hard to build a relationship as it is to grow a crop without watering it! So when remember to be a farmer rather than a hunter and crucially in networking, as in life, it is not who you know. . . but just how well you know them!

Mary berry

Mary’s first television series Afternoon Plus with Judith Chalmers came out in the early 70s and was a big hit.

The Great British Bake Off star Mary Berry attracts over 13 million viewers on the show’s finale and shares with the Buzz Magazine a sample of her life after being encouraged in domestic science classes whilst at school prior to studying catering.

The Cooking Queen B

orn in 1935 and raised in Bath, to Alleyne and Marjorie Berry, Mary was the middle child with two brothers. She grew up to be an ‘outdoors’ child, building dens, picnicking and lighting fires to fry bread. “Life was very different then as they had a very active lifestyle when young, not like the way it is now”.

Growing Up “Mary was not an academic girl and domestic science was her saviour. ‘I found something I was good at; in fact, I really didn’t like any of the subjects, except cookery. I had an inspirational cookery teacher and so I enjoyed it. When I left school I thought ‘I’ve got to do something’ and I decided that catering was the life for me and I went and did a catering qualification.”

Career Her first job was demonstrating electric cookers for the South Western Electricity Board in customers’ own kitchens. It led to her next role where she was given a part-time position allowing her time to write. At the age of 22, she applied to work at the Dutch Dairy Bureau, while taking City & Guilds courses in the evenings. She then persuaded her manager to pay for her to undertake the professional qualification from the French Le Cordon Bleu School when she moved to France.

In the 1960s she became the cookery editor of Housewife magazine, followed by Ideal Home magazine. Television work soon followed. Mary’s first television series Afternoon Plus with Judith Chalmers came out in the early 70s and was a big hit with a lot of British mothers.

eat healthily, however, a lot of parents often offer them a bag of crisps when they are hungry.”

Future When we asked Mary how she feels about turning 80, she responded “I’m extremely grateful to be as fit as I am. I think I have taken every opportunity that has come my way, and I have no intention of slowing down. I also like to take each day as it comes.”

Mary Berry’s Favourite: Food Potted Shrimps

Mary finds inspiration from her family. She says “Making them happy inspires me to want to cook more. We make all sorts of different things together. They get to choose what we make. Often it’s something like homemade jam. They just love it.”

Movie Four Weddings and a Funeral

With so many recipes to choose from, her favourite one changes all the time and her favourite cuisine are English, French and Italian. She believes that everyone can make time to prepare and cook good meals and that home cooking is having a revival. She adds “I think a balanced diet is the way to stay fit and healthy. People have too much sugar in their diet. There is no need to add extra sugar to your diet. One should also be sensible about portion sizes and not going back for second helpings. of the world does not speak English

What do the 10 most important languages for the UK’s future and the 10 foreign languages taught by the VICI Language Academy in Newbury have in common?

ASK NATHALIE, THE BUZZ LANGUAGE EXPERT

Absolutely everything - they are identical!

‘Languages for the Future’ puts 10 foreign languages in order of importance: 1. Spanish 2. Arabic 3. French 4. Mandarin Chinese 5. German 6. Portuguese 7. Italian 8. Russian 9. Turkish 10. Japanese

Languages for the Future Within the report we discover that a survey commissioned by the British Council suggests that three quarters of the UK public are unable to speak any of these languages well enough to hold a conversation. That figure is even more alarming when you consider that the report also confirms that 70% of the world does not speak English. The British Council says: “the UK needs to develop its citizens’ competence in a wider range of languages, and in far greater numbers,

in order to reap the economic and cultural benefits available to those who have these skills.” However it stresses that schools across the UK should enrich their curriculum with the inclusion of new languages from the top 10 and an increased focus on understanding other cultures. It also says schools should be exploiting the many languages and

cultural resources available; whether funded, free, local, online or through international links and partnerships with other countries. This has lifted out multilingual hearts here at VICI for while we are a business, the Academy was born of a passionate belief in the importance of enriching lives through learning language no matter what your age.

For seven years, a (Vodafone sponsored) “soft skills” development programme has brought West Berkshire secondary school students and business people together to increase students’ confidence and motivation. A 16-year-old student pays tribute to his mentors, saying, “They help you to realise what life is like when you are older” – the mentor reflects, “It’s been great remembering what it was like to be 16!” Take a Chance increases students’ confidence and motivation through practising “life-skills”, focusing on soft and work-related skills, emphasising teamwork, learning styles, presentation, time management and positive thinking. A student from the 2013/14 programme reflected that Take a Chance was “Wonderful with a hint of amazing. It helps you with to be yourself and always think positive.” The 14 to15 year-olds, nominated in Year 9, must be expecting 5 grade C’s at GCSE - young people with the potential to do well, but who perhaps don’t promote themselves, for lack of “soft skills”. “Given the number of people we can touch positively through this programme, and the incredibly positive feedback from students and teachers, our investment is worthwhile.” says Andrew Dunnett, of Vodafone plc, whose Vodafone Foundation, funds the West Berkshire programme.

This year, for the first time, Education Business Partnership West Berkshire, who runs the programme, has piloted Take a Chance at Windsor Girls School, working in partnership with energy company Centrica plc, whose HR Partner Rebecca Harris comments, “Take a Chance sits at the heart of our diversity strategy, helping to increase young women’s employability skills and future career possibilities.”

A 16-year-old student pays tribute to his mentors, saying, “They help you to realise what life is like when you are older” – the mentor reflects, “It’s been great remembering what it was like to be 16!”

VEGETARIANS AND VEGANS. . . Whats the difference? To eat or not eat meat. . . this is the question on many people’s mind. The negative impact of animal foods on health, the damage associated with animal foods and the environment, religious beliefs, and the desire to protect and respect animals are some of the reasons for the increase in the number of people consuming vegetarian diets. Many people express an interest in consuming a vegetarian diet but don’t do so

because they are unsure of how to do it or are not ready to give up meat. Fortunately, there are options and lots of great resources available to help. The key to making this diet work for you is to understand what nutrients you are missing from the foods that you are not consuming and to learn how to balance your meals without these foods. (See table above).

As well as being a good coffee or tea-time cake, this makes a comforting pudding, served warm with clotted cream or crème fraîche. I often make it in autumn, when I have a glut of apples.

Serves 12 341 Calories per serving Special equipment: Traybake tin, 30 x 23cm (12 x 9in) and 4cm (1 Serves 12 341 calories per serving in) deep

Ingredients 225g (8oz) butter (room temperature), plus extra for greasing 550g (1 lb) cooking apples, such as Bramley Juice of

lemon

225g (8oz) light muscovado sugar 300g (10oz) self-raising flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp ground cinnamon 4 large eggs 1 tbsp full-fat or semi-skimmed milk Icing sugar, to dust

Spiced Dorset Apple Traybake P

reheat the oven to 180ºC (fan 160ºC/350ºF/Gas 4). Grease the traybake tin with butter and line with baking parchment. Quarter, peel, core, and thinly slice the apples, and put them in a shallow dish. Pour over the lemon juice and toss gently together.

P

ut the butter, muscovado sugar, flour, baking powder, teaspoon of the cinnamon, the eggs, and milk in a large bowl. Beat thoroughly using an electric hand whisk for about 2 minutes (or use a wooden spoon for about 3 minutes) until smooth and light.

It’s important to slice the apples very thinly. If they’re too thick, they won’t soften enough when baked. Tossing them in lemon juice helps stop them from turning too brown, as well as giving flavour and extra juiciness. 28

S

poon half the mixture into the prepared tin and spread it out evenly. Lay half the apple slices on top and sprinkle over the remaining teaspoon of cinnamon. Spoon the remaining cake mixture on top and carefully level the surface. Scatter the rest of the apple slices over the cake mixture and press them lightly into the surface.

B

ake for 40 minutes or until well risen and golden brown on top. The cake will feel spongy but firm, and will be starting to come away slightly from the edges of the tin. Also, the apples should be soft. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then loosen the sides with a small palette knife and turn out the cake, peel off the parchment paper, and leave to cool on a wire rack. Sift icing sugar over the top of the cake.

which use as many British ingredients as possible.

An important part of their strategy is to utilise British ingredients. So, nine years ago, Nicola and Robert started Atkins & Potts following an upbringing in farming and from culinary backgrounds as Robert’s father and brother are both chefs.

Recognised by their award winning Hollandaise sauce, Nicola adds “When we market the products, the packaging plays an important part and therefore we allow people to see what they were actually buying which has been extremely successful.”

There are three different brands within the Atkins & Potts range; Atkins & Potts Inspired Dining, British Provenance Foods and Relish The Idea. All the ingredients used are of the highest quality such as British eggs, British butter and British sugar; and these are in all of their products, however, it is their British Provenance Foods

Their vision is to grow the British Provenance range and to make it more widely available. Currently you can buy their products at Cobbs Farm and Wellington Farm Shop, Vicar’s Game, Budgens at Wash Common, N J Richards at Lambourne, Cook & Butcher at Thatcham or via their website www.atkinsandpotts.co.uk http://food.askbuzz.co.uk

Most of the talk this month is about the levelling off that started six months ago with the introduction of tighter mortgage lending. The prevailing sentiment now has shifted away from quick gains towards a more long-term view. Could it be that we are finally getting to grips with our real estate issues or is this another period of calm before the next storm? On the one hand, there are encouraging signs of stability including discussions over giving the Bank of England further powers to maintain sensible lending. On the other, there is the seemingly never-ending demand particularly in regional hotspots like the Thames Valley and this can only result in inflationary pressures, even if these pressures are held back temporarily.

A great place to live West Berkshire claims to be a “great place to live”. Do we live up to our own billing? Well I have lived in this district for over 15 years and I think we’ve come a long way. Our district as a whole offers a wide range of accommodation at prices that are reasonable given where we are in the country. Newbury town centre has certainly come a long way with the advent of pedestrianisation and expansion of the shopping district. In particular we have a growing choice of food, beverage and entertainment options (with more coming soon) and these encourage people to stay local rather than migrate outwards to bigger centres such as Reading. This is good for our economy and it’s good for us as residents. We must remember our unique appeal though;- we have created a vibrant urban centre that sits within beautiful and

tranquil countryside with a great deal of recreational activity.

Prosperity and new town centre homes

focus

There is no doubting as well our ability to drive business prosperity. We are home to an abundance of world-class companies and we provide an educated workforce that services the wider region. We are soon going to benefit from rail electrification that will bring more carriages and a seat for everyone hopefully.

will stay or come to our town. There is now unprecedented development in Newbury both in terms of new build and in terms of the conversion of old vacant buildings. This is bringing a large number of new apartments to the urban district and these are starting to attract young and old who are drawn to the prospect of living in an up and coming urban centre.

One thing we have lacked in the recent past though is a young demographic. A great number of our 18 to 25-year-olds have tended to move on to larger, more aspirational towns. With the increased vibrancy of Newbury as a regional centre it is likely that more of the younger generation

The outcome that I hope most people share is that we will have the best of both worlds – a thriving urban centre and a beautiful well cared for setting. So we are certainly on the right track, in my view at least and the district is very much starting to live up to its billing.

Market News During Quarter 3 of 2014 house-prices rose by 1.2% from the previous quarter. That’s a rise of 8% over one year. l We are still over 20% below the last peak. l We are however only 7% below the long term trend line

(previously 7.4%). For more property insight speak to Sean at The Buzz website blog.

We believe that no elderly person in the UK should be alone on Christmas Day, unless they want to be.

Community Christmas

book your place call 0844 854 9251

Doris lived in a block of flats designed for the over 55s. She was collected for Christmas lunch, with others, in a minibus and was given the opportunity to meet some of her other neighbours for the first time. They resolved to keep in touch for the rest of the year.

In an ideal world Christmas is a time for being with friends and family but in reality this can be challenging. Many take a well earned break, local friends go to visit distant relatives, and most places and transport are closed. Community Christmas identifies what options are available for older people on Christmas Day, offering the chance to make new contacts and friends. This year Community Christmas will be holding an event in Thatcham. We will collect you from your home at around 11am and take you to the hall for some lunch and entertainment, and you will be back home safe and sound by around 4pm. Alternatively, a volunteer can bring your lunch to you if you feel unable to attend.

Bring your Community together to make this Christmas different and build bonds that last all year long. If you, an organisation, or someone you know, already run an activity for the elderly on Christmas Day then tell us about it.

If you don’t know of an event in your area our postcode search will help you check – we have other pointers we can offer too.

If you would like to ‘fill the gap’ we can provide guidance and support to help you get an activity up and running.

To join us either call 0844 854 9251 or email Thatcham@communitychristmas.org.uk. There is also more information on our website www.communitychristmas.org.uk 40
