Chamber update Before the Christmas break, the West Berks Chamber was pleased to provide a letter of support to an application for a proposed development at London Road. The scheme was designed to develop an area that faces the northern approach to Newbury from the A34, just off the Robin Hood roundabout. The objective was to create a gateway to Newbury.
www.westberkschamber.tvchamber.co.uk
As a business stakeholder, the Chamber of Commerce is often asked to support development schemes – as a Chamber Council in West Berks we agree a collective response that assesses any scheme against the following criteria; quality of design, employment gain, inward investment opportunity and connection with the Newbury 2026 Vision. The Education Business Partnership (EBP) in West Berkshire continues to build partnerships between the business and education sectors – an exciting initiative for 2015 will be encouraging ‘girls into technology’ – the Thames Valley is fortunate to have many technology focused businesses in the region and work is already underway to make the connections.

your vote your voice
general election
7th may 2015
The UK holds a General Election every four years, our next election is on Thursday 7th May 2015. Any British citizen, Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Irish Republic aged 18 or over is entitled to vote (some exceptions). In order to cast your vote you need to be registered on the electoral register, you can apply for a postal vote – but you need to apply for this by 21st April 2015. Some would have you believe there really isn’t any point voting, is this true? Are you and your vote worth so little? Is there no party or candidate worthy of your vote? Has politics become less concerned with you as an individual or community? Have we become more disillusioned by our politicians? Is there too much hypocrisy and scandal around politics? Evidently there is a rise in inequality, the gap keeps widening between those that have, and those that don’t have. We see greater levels of intolerance and a rise in blame culture in our neighbourhoods. Is this just a sign of the times, a reflection of global economic pressures and uncertainty perhaps?
What are your concerns? Are our political leaders dealing with them effectively? The 2010 UK General Election results plunged democracy into crisis with a significantly low turnout. Michael Sani is a former teacher and founder of Bite The Ballot, a youth voter movement. In his words to encourage involvement in politics he says, “Everything around you is political. Whether the youth club stays open, the traffic on the roads, what houses get built, the local football pitch, what money the school gets, what treatment you get at hospital.” The question remains who will you give this power of decision making to? It is your vote, your voice, use it wisely.
To find out more visit www.ukpolitical.info, www.gov.uk/voting-in-the-uk To join the debate visit Buzz. . . Please go to our website http://www.localbuzzmagazine.com/west-berkshire/category /your-community-your-voice/ Share your views, I would love to hear from you. Waheeda Soomro

Defined as a photo taken, normally at arms length, by the person in the photo. Selfies have been given a new lease of life by selfie sticks which effectively extend the arm giving a wider angle.

. . . our towns, our economy, is doing better, people are starting to see real improvements.
The local farmer and businessman fought and won the Newbury seat for the Conservatives in 2005 and 2010 and is defending a majority of over 12,000. “Without a scintilla of complacency, I think West Berkshire is in a much better place now than it was five years ago. Having just been through the banking crisis, a lot of people in West Berkshire work in financial services, and a lot of people were affected by the recession, and it was a nervous place in 2010. Don’t laugh, but one of the indicators I use for the economy is car parking in places like Newbury and Thatcham from the council’s car park takings, because you get a very good weather vane of the economy and it’s doing really well now.” “So our towns, our economy, is doing better, people are starting to see real improvements. TV’s Anna backs the Berkshire ChildLine Schools Service Appeal
TV presenter and ChildLine supporter, Anna Williamson, took time out from her recent run as Cinderella at Reading’s Hexagon Theatre to speak about her support for the children’s charity.
Anna said; “I have been a volunteer for the NSPCC’s ChildLine service for three years now and it’s a charity that’s very close to my heart and a big part of my life. My support includes volunteering as a ChildLine counsellor which involves taking phone calls and online contacts from young people who need someone to talk to. I’ve been a children’s TV presenter for over a decade and I feel very privileged that young people trust me. They’ve often called into shows to speak to me and offload their problems, and I just wanted to do something useful and reach out to children who need help.”
Training Anna continued; “I am also trained to deliver the ChildLine Schools Service, which I’m very excited about. It’s a shocking fact that at least two children in every primary school classroom will have suffered some form of abuse, but most won’t tell anyone about it for several years.” The ChildLine Schools Service delivers age appropriate assemblies and workshops to 9-11 year olds to help them recognise the different types of abuse, to make them understand that abuse is never their fault, and to show them where to get help if they need it.
positive feedback Anna added; “Personally I think that the ChildLine Schools Service should be mandatory. It’s all about letting children know that they’re not alone, and whilst we do touch on some slightly sensitive topics it’s all done in a very safe and age appropriate way. Feedback from schools that have received the Service has been incredibly positive.” Kate Gower, Head Teacher at The Pines Primary School in Bracknell said; “The children had such a positive experience. They all got involved with the assemblies and workshops. The advice that ChildLine gave our pupils on how to stay safe and where to go for help if they ever need it was invaluable.” Anna concluded; “I would really urge local people to get behind the Berkshire ChildLine Schools Service Appeal as I believe that as adults we all have a responsibility to protect children. Most children have safe, happy lives but some don’t and all children should have the knowledge to know where to get help if they need it.”
To find out more about supporting the Berkshire ChildLine Schools Service Appeal or to make a donation, call 07748 321461 or email Fiona.turner@nspcc.org.uk
It costs £12 to deliver the Service to one child, and ChildLine desperately needs people across Berkshire to back its fundraising appeal so that a generation of local children can be protected.” 15

ook at the jewellery she wears every day. If she always wears a fine gold chain and locket and discrete earrings then she’s probably not going to want a chunky plastic bangle no matter how ‘current’ the style. Likewise if she always wears chunky costume jewellery in bright colours it’s highly unlikely she’ll covet a dainty pearl bracelet.

education
January’s now upon us which means most people are planning their resolutions as the Christmas festivities end and a clean sheet presents itself in the form of a new year.
learning a language
Nathalie’s top tips
Find out what kind of learner you are Everyone learns differently. Some people learn better when they see something written down, others like to hear something several times; some language learners like to learn the grammar rules by heart. I recommend using a variety of strategies including books, listening to recordings, rehearsing dialogues, watching videos, playing games. . .
Work at your own pace Have regular lessons, supplemented by practice. You should vary the task according to your mood; for example, if you are tired, try a less demanding task such as repeating activities.
If your concentration is waning, try reading a foreign language magazine article about a subject that interests you.
Never give up! Remember that it is possible to communicate with just a few words; don’t get disheartened if you feel you are not making progress as when you get things wrong, you are still learning!
Improvise…
Welcoming our Woodpeckers
to Jubilee Day Nursery We have greeted the New Year in with the opening of Woodpeckers, our new baby/toddler area.
Sometimes you need a word that you don’t yet know. I always assure learners that every language learner has been in this position and if you can communicate by facial expressions, hand movements or props, you will build up confidence and will maintain the conversation!
This exciting new play space has been specifically designed for our oldest babies. Woodpeckers gives them space to explore and to discover, in a safe and secure environment.
With our experienced professional caring team close at hand to encourage and support their individual, play learning and developmental needs.

Beat in the egg and a little of the milk until smooth. Add milk and 4 tablespoons of the melted butter. In a non-stick frying pan heat the butter until sizzling. Pour enough batter into the pan to coat the base evenly. Cook over a moderate heat until the pancake is light golden brown underneath. Flip over and cook the other side until golden. Happy New Year to all Party season is over and we are swiftly making our way into 2015, and in true January style, we are discussing hair saviours to detox and revamp those tired tresses! With all these glam party up dos, heated hair tools and drying weather, our hair can take a bit of a battering during winter. Due to this, we have found an increase in clients wanting to exert and inject some moisture and strength back into their hair. In which case we’ll always introduce them to a good hair mask. A great treatment can make the world of difference, believe me! If you’re having a lazy day at home, why not give your hair a wash, then lather it in a lovely hair mask. Sit back and relax for a few hours whilst it gets to work. Letting the mask penetrate, getting deeper into your hair shaft, helps to repair from the inside, out. Alternatively if you live in a world where lazy days just don’t exist, come and indulge in a 10 minute luxury Oatmeal & Honey treatment in salon. Job done! Your hair will thank you. 01635 47774 . www.halohairnewbury.co.uk 21 Market Place, Newbury

Marilyn Down
As soon as you walk into Marilyn’s house, there is an overwhelming feeling of tranquillity, warmth and security. Her journey has been interesting if not challenging. Coming from a financial and property background, Marilyn came across Reiki later in life. After she completed her course, she decided to help others as much as she could but also animals, says a regular client “Mojo, our Pixie Bob cat, had been hit by a car and had managed to drag himself home. We took him to the vet who said that his trauma might leave his leg paralyzed but only time would tell. The vet said that if it did not heal he would have to amputate Mojo’s leg. Marilyn offered Reiki to see whether this might help Mojo. The results were truly amazing as Mojo recovered the use of his leg within two weeks”.
head and front and back of the torso. The placement of the hands is never intrusive or inappropriate, nor any pressure.
What might I experience? “I feel very refreshed and seem to be thinking more clearly.” “I think I fell asleep.” “I can’t believe how hot your hands got!” “I feel more relaxed than ever after a massage.” “My headache is gone.” These are some of things people typically say after a Reiki session with Marilyn. The experience of Reiki is subjective, changeable, and sometimes very subtle. People often experience heat in the practitioner’s hands, but sometimes the practitioner’s hands feel refreshingly cool.
What does the session consist of?
How many sessions should I receive?
A complete Reiki session is offered to a fully clothed recipient who is lying on a treatment table or sitting comfortably supported in a chair.
Marilyn may suggest a series of sessions however three sessions is a traditional recommendation and gives you time to evaluate the benefits you are receiving. Discuss how best to space the sessions to suit your needs and your schedule.
Most commonly, Reiki is offered through light, non-invasive touch with the practitioner’s hands placed and held on a series of locations on the

New Homes
Quality of life There is a solution to this predicament though. If we switch our focus from ‘economic growth’ to ‘quality of life’ and the ‘price we pay’ for more inward migration and development is that we achieve better roads, public transport, working and living conditions, less crime and more equality then development will be far more welcome.
in the News
As the New Year takes shape, plans to develop additional sites identified for housing in West Berkshire are proving controversial and are likely to feature prominently in the lead up to this years general elections. Many of these proposed new homes are located on greenfield sites on the edge of larger settlements or even villages and there is understandable concern about our capacity to deal with these homes, the damage to greenbelt and the impact that population growth will bring on transportation, schools, doctors and other public facilities.
Unstoppable growth On the other hand however, our role as an economic powerhouse in our ever expanding global economy and our proximity to London, the world’s most significant city on most indices introduces almost irresistible pressure for population growth. With affordability limits now biting in London, the pressure for new housing has very much shifted to the surrounding communities and
in particular to the Thames Valley. If we do not build new homes in places where there is demand, we will create excess price inflation, overcrowding and even deflation. But the South East of England (which includes many rural areas) is already more densely populated than India for example and England as a whole is the most crowded country in Europe. If we continue to build as we are doing, we will surely perpetuate overcrowding and consume our heritage ‘green England’ in the process?
Population density and new housing does not in itself deteriorate our quality of life and with proper management it can provide a meaningful quality for those seeking a more dynamic lifestyle. For too long, we have fallen short as a nation with regard to the fundamentals of planning for quality however and our planning for new infrastructure always seems to come after the misery has arisen not before. I believe that most development should occur in towns and cities and this gives the best opportunity to accommodate growth in a positive way without harming our countryside. This trend has already started as people flock increasingly to the large centres in pursuit of convenience. The larger centres present huge untapped potential for redevelopment and a virtuous cycle of growth and quality of life is possible in these places with the right levels of forward thinking. Careful strategic planning is the key however and we should rightly resist large scale development unless the quality of life balance has been addressed before the development goes into use.

Moss! Moss in the UK is a real problem; it gets everywhere, on the front drive, the roof, in the guttering and especially in the lawn. Due to the climate here being cold, wet, damp, and limited sun in the winter, moss can develop and spread very easily. Why does moss spread into the lawn? Here a few reasons why: n
Poor drainage in the lawn and areas where water lays on the surface for extended periods of time.
n
Shaded areas, especially under trees.
n
Poor soil, moss is more likely to be present in lawns that have clay soil.
garden view
I recently spent 3 weeks over Christmas in Texas, the lawns are very different there due to the climate being very hot and dry. Moss is practically nonexistent in lawns. Now I am back in England, I am getting ready to tackle the moss in my customers lawns, Phil Adshead and help them Owner Supagrass Lawn improve their lawns Treatment Service for the coming year.
Helping you achieve the lawn you’ve always wanted.
Phil Adshead runs Supagrass in the Hampshire and West Berks area. He has helped over 1000 customers improve their lawns, and has looked after the greens at two of the top 10 golf courses in the world including Augusta National. air movement. Especially by sides of house, fences, or trees.

n
Mowing the lawn too short.
When a lawn has heavy moss, it can be very unsightly especially in the winter when it comes to life. It can have a bright green look, and unless it is controlled and physically removed from the lawn, it can regenerate itself
year after year. Here are the best ways to control moss:
n
Apply Autumn and Spring feed with nitrogen.
n Prune
n
In some cases, over seeding where the moss was removed is necessary.
and trim tress back to allow more air movement through the lawn.
n
Apply moss killer in Autumn and early Spring.
n
Use an iron sulphate material to kill moss.
n
Once moss is dead it must be removed by raking, by hand or machine scarification.
n
Aerating the lawn helps drainage allowing grass roots to strengthen.
Following these steps will help keep moss under control and will allow the grass in your lawn to do what they are designed to do, which is to grow strong and be healthy. If you would like any free advice on your lawn I would love to hear from you, you can call me on 01256 461388 or email rbf@supagrass.co.uk. 37
