EMBRACE SPRINGTIME Chamber update Notifications will have been sent to the West Berkshire Chamber members in plenty of time for the Local Annual Meeting (LAM) – 13th April.

www.westberkschamber.tvchamber.co.uk

This is the annual opportunity for Chamber Council members to be elected or re-elected to represent the interests of the membership and the wider business community in West Berks. This year’s meeting will be the last for Ian Vickerage in his capacity as local President – Ian will be stepping down after 9 years in the role. He will continue to be involved locally with the Chamber as Managing Director of Imago ScanScource in Thatcham. Proposed changes to Apprenticeship funding will see employers have a say in creating standards and have direct control of apprenticeship funding. Funding model being trialled with the new employer-designed apprenticeship standards in the 2014/15 (Pilot) continuing into 2015/16. Under the trial model, Government will pay £2 for every £1 the employer invests in their apprentice’s training.

Spring is celebrated in many cultures and communities around the world, especially around harvest, re-birth and transformation, making spring the perfect time to listen to your inner voice and embrace change. What does spring mean to you? With the passing of dreary wintery days, spring brings us blue skies, sunshine and budding blooms, but of course for some it also brings the allergies and hay fever. Springtime is great for exploring new opportunities, whether it’s home or garden improvements or in your own personal growth. It is a great time to listen to your inner voice, and do that something which you’ve been putting off for some time. At any one time, we are all part of many communities, either in our neighbourhood, school, faith, work

Here are some ideas to get you started : l Join a singing, walking or art group l Learn to play an instrument l Start a neighbourhood band l Setup or join your local

related or other interest or hobby groups. Connecting with people gives us a sense of belonging and commonality, so go ahead and find that like-minded cluster of people you want to connect with.

Take some time out for yourself, treat yourself to a massage or get a new look. Embrace change and welcome new beginnings in your life, especially if the old challenges are taking their toll. Some people are of course quite happy in their own company enjoying solitary activities, but if you feel isolated and dis-connected from your community and neighbourhood, please get in touch with us and we will direct you to some support. Remember; listen to your inner voice, if you want to embrace change in your life, take small steps in the direction you want to go, and before you know it you will be closer to where you want to be.

petter solberg Jackie Osborne interviews Petter Solberg as he prepares for the World RX in Portugal.

Solberg set the pace in World RX 2014

12

A

t the age of 13, Petter Solberg won a nationwide RC car championship the Norwegian Tamiya Cup in 1987. He inherited his interest of motorsport through his parents, who were keen bilcross competitors and rallycross enthusiasts. He used to help out around the home farm rebuilding competition cars, as he was not yet old enough to drive. Petter Solberg began his driving career in rallycross in 1992, three days after his 18th birthday and only one day after he got his driving license. He went on to become Norwegian champion in rallycross as well as hillclimb in both 1995 (winning 19 out of 21 events) and

1996 (winning 15 out of 19 events). In 1995 he took part in his maiden rally, the Norwegian Rally Bjørkelangen, by driving a Volvo 240 in the Volvo Original class. His female navigator by then was Maude from Sweden, nowadays spouse of his older brother Henning. In 1998 Petter became the Norwegian Rally Champion. This popular Norwegian – known as ‘Hollywood’ to his many fans for his crowd-pleasing antics – made his World Rally Championship debut in 1998 before joining Ford for 1999. A switch to Subaru for 2000 preceded his first win on the 2002 Rally GB, where he claimed the world title a year later. Solberg’s speed and charisma is just as obvious on the world’s rallycross circuits as he marks himself as one of the fastest drivers.

Solberg took his second FIA world title last year

The Montalegre rallycross race cicruit will host the season opener to the 2015 FIA World Rallycross Championship. It will take place on 24-26th April in Portugal and it will bring good memories to Petter as he won the World RX of Portugal last year.

When Bathsheba Everdene inherits a farm from her father, no-one expects her to take on its management herself. But our spirited young heroine will not be deterred and takes up the mantle with vigour. Yet, whilst she rises impressively to the challenges of sheep farming, it is the trials of the heart that threaten to undo her. Hardy’s much loved tale is both a thrilling romance and a joyous celebration of English rural life. 01635 46044 www.watermill.org.uk

Organise Your Own

Egg Hunt Send out themed invites on card cut into egg shapes, or maybe use rabbit or chick shapes. If offering food, decorate a trestle table with pretty pastel table cloths. It may be better to stick with tiny savoury sandwiches, sausages or cheese and pineapple

on sticks etc., as there will be a lot of sugar consumed after (and probably during) the hunt! Try using a mix of eggs for the hunt: Foiled-wrapped cream eggs; hard-boiled decorated eggs; painted wooden eggs, and little plastic eggs filled with tiny toys or treats. It’s nice to have a table set aside for egg decorating too. Supply hard boiled eggs, or plastic or wooden eggs bought from a craft shop, with paints, tiny flowers, googly eyes, gems, ribbons and glue, and have prizes for the best decorated eggs.

easter Cup Cakes

A variation on this is to set out cheap straw or paper hats and have everyone create their own Easter bonnet. Have fun! Happy Easter.

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4.

These cute cakes make an Easter treat Makes: 12 cupcakes Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 15-20 minutes Cooling time: 15 minutes Decorating time: 10-15 minutes

INGREDIENTS FOR THE CAKES 115g (4oz) softened butter or margarine 115g (4oz) caster sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten 85g (3oz) self-raising flour 25g (1oz) cocoa powder (optional - for chocolate cupcakes)

FOR THE TOPPING 85g (3oz) softened butter 175g (5oz) icing sugar 25g (1oz) cocoa powder 1 tablespoon milk 3 drops vanilla extract 2 packets mini eggs

Place the butter in a mixing bowl with the sugar. Beat until light and fluffy. Then gradually beat in the eggs, a little at a time. Sift the flour and cocoa powder (if using) into the mixture. Fold them in with a large spoon until combined. Use a teaspoon to dollop the mixture into silicon cases, or paper cases, lining a patty tin. Bake in the preheated oven until well risen and firm to touch, 15 to 20 minutes. Keep checking them so they don’t burn. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. To make the buttercream topping, place the butter in a bowl. Sift in the icing sugar and cocoa, and then add the milk and vanilla essence. Beat until really light and fluffy. When the cupcakes have cooled, ice the cakes. It looks good if the icing is piped on into a nest shape, but this is optional. Place chocolate eggs in the centre of each nest to decorate.

Every human being has a bio-plasmic field, or aura and several main energy centres of the body. Pranic Healing® practitioners work on these energy fields and centres. This corrects any imbalance of the life energy within and around the patient.

When this happens, all energy restrictions are removed and the associated ailments are alleviated.

Pranic Healing® is a highly evolved and pure system of energy healing, which utilises Prana to balance and transform the body. Prana is a Sanskrit word meaning life-force. This invisible bio-energy or vital energy keeps the body alive and maintains a state of good health. In acupuncture, the Chinese refer to this subtle energy as Chi. It is also called Ruah or the Breath of Life in the Old Testament.

Ever heard of your Glutes? Well, they are the big muscles in your bum that help to stabilise your lower back, your hips and they even reduce the stress placed through the knees. The problem is nowadays we spend too much time sitting down and these incredibly important muscles begin to switch off and become weak, resulting in aches and pains in your lower back, hips, thighs and the tops of your knees. . . sound familiar? So how do you “wake up” the glutes and improve their strength? Try some targeted exercises such as the clam shell.

ASK MEL BUZZ OSTEOPATHY EXPERT

1 Lie onto your side - bend your knees and slightly flex your hips up towards you. 2 Squeeze your glutes. 3 Keeping your heels together, raise your upper knee as high as you can without rocking your pelvis back. Make sure your bottom leg stays in contact with the floor the whole time. 4 Hold for 5 seconds and then relax. 5 Repeat 10-15 times. 07727 666312 www.melharrisonosteopath.co.uk melharrison156@yahoo.com

enjoy the gentle benefits of Reiki Offer to Buzz readers - book d three sessions an receive third half price.

Feel your body respond to the benefits of Reiki.

When clients come for a Reiki session, anything discussed is always treated with complete confidentiality. Talking is in my view part of a healing process for many people. It is a release. Some clients come for a treatment because they feel ‘ill at ease’. To be able to completely relax, to relax at a deep level often releases issues within the client which are causing ‘dis-ease’ and then if they are able to talk about their experience, it releases the stress, rather like opening lock gates and allowing the water to flow. Bottling up problems or worries creates a ‘block’ holding back emotions. Allowing them to flow free can give immense relief to the person involved. Please contact Marilyn Down 07856 611 194 or 01635 248170 to book your Reiki Treatment.

T

his year it seems we have the return of soft boho braids. Twists on the classic fishtail and loose, relaxed French braids. Looks following through from the catwalk, Oscar De La Renta and Michael Kors brides. Taking the boho vibe into the updos too, we’ve been playing around with much softer pinned up looks. Looser locks creating texture. The perfect look for the hopeless romantic. If you prefer the more perfected preened look, add a little bit of glamour

with the Hollywood wave. Brushed out waves are great for hair lacking fullness, worn in a low partying and finished with a beautiful vintage style slide. A perfectly elegant, classic approach to wedding hair. These are just a few ideas, remember hair ups can be developed and adapted to your individuality. Trials are always a good idea to give time to get your preferred look perfected, by the time to big day rolls around you can sit back and enjoy being pampered.

What is Hyperhidrosis? E

xcessive sweating under the arms can cause embarrassment and distress to the individual and can even damage relationships and expensive clothing. Business meetings, stressful situations and special occasions such as weddings, can be times when your body lets you down.

If you have a big event coming up this year, and would prefer not to be troubled with excessive sweating, why not consider a treatment that will reduce sweat production for up to seven months. Protect the investment you have made in your clothes, and invest in yourself.

If you are one of these individuals who has had no luck with topical anti-perspirants, maybe a treatment with Botulinum A, (BotoxR) could be the answer.

Any sweating that causes significant impairment of normal daily activities may be viewed as hyperhidrosis.

Treatment is extremely effective with minimal complications and has a high client satisfaction rate. If you are a man or woman aged between 18 and 65 why not visit skinpause.co.uk and find out more.

New figures out this week reveal a continued and unprecedented shift in the housing market away from home ownership.

homes are in ‘owner-occupation’ in Germany. Whilst there is interest in homeownership it is never been the subject of obsession or viewed as an investment as it has been in the UK.

a new look

housing Market In 1918, 77% of households in England and Wales rented their homes. Home ownership then reached a peak of 70% in 2001 before starting a steady decline to 63% in 2014. This downward trend now seems to be accelerating. Last year was also significant in that the number of homes funded with mortgages fell below the number of homes in outright ownership for the first time. This was caused by long term mortgages that reached maturity outstripping new starts. More noticeably, the rate of purchase for younger people also declined to half of what it used to be.

The end of a dream If owning your own home is the great British dream, the system is now failing very badly. Whilst the popular media claims that inflation and raising a deposit are the predominant factors for this, the reality is more complex. Housing for example has previously been considered to have the dual role of providing a home and financial investment. The investment phenomenon has often been

an undesirable ‘get rich quick‘ scheme and this speculation and a shortage of supply has fuelled inflation. Young people nowadays are less concerned (or confident) with property investment however than they might be with clearing their university debt and taking some time to travel the world. Mortgages are also more difficult to come by. On an even more serious theme, wealth and income gaps are now at their highest in the UK for a very long time and this has undoubtedly segregated the market into ‘owner occupiers’ and ‘others’.

A new model The German model makes for an interesting comparison; only 42% of

Low home inflation has dissuaded speculative investment and the rental sector is dominated by institutional investment. This institutional investment provides for long-term rental options (and hence certainty) together with high standards of accommodation and maintenance. Under these conditions, being a tenant has many attractions not least considerable flexibility and reduced financial exposure. This institutional model has gathered considerable strength in the UK over the past couple of years, to an extent that the UK is likely to migrate towards the German model where long-term rental is seen as a viable alternative to ownership. Some commentators believe that this type of institutional ownership will eventually overtake owner occupation as quality levels and security of tenure improve. This trend has reached Newbury just recently. We are currently developing two large highquality private rental sites in central Newbury for example (and others elsewhere) that will be available in the market from early 2016. We are hoping to attract more sites in the coming months and we urgently need to ensure that supply matches demand if we are to keep prices (both rental and purchase) under control.

Market News* During Quarter 4 of 2014 house-prices rose by only 0.1% from the previous quarter. That’s a rise of 7% over one year (down from 8%). l We are still over 20% below the last peak. l We are now 8.4% below the long term trend line (previously 7%).

Run by Sue Kingham and her son Malcolm STV Security has been keeping clients safe from criminals for the past decade and here they share their expertise with Buzz readers. Thieves and burglars are opportunists and by simply having the right locks fitted to your doors and windows can keep premises safe. However for insurance to be valid ensure they are British Standard marked. . Of course if you have locks. . . be sure to use them! Security lighting is another important step to stop burglars from lurking around your property; without shadowy corners they have nowhere to hide.

If you really want to deter criminals the next step is to use alarms and CCTV cameras, both of which ideally need to be chosen and fitted by security experts as the choice can be bewildering – wired or wireless, monitored or unmonitored for example and it is essential that the sensors are fitted without blind spots. Cameras are a fast developing technology in home security and we’ve all seen on social media the faces of hapless thieves caught on camera. It

is possible to have the feed from the camera appear on your tablet or smart phone and have it alert you when an alarm has been triggered – unless you want to watch the dog sleeping on the couch all day! Simple steps that need to be taken to lock out crime. If you would like a free security survey of your property then STV Security can help, so get in touch if you want help protecting your home, family or business.

GARDEN VIEW

A

pril is a great month for a garden project; one which can be achieved in a morning or an afternoon, and which improves a few square metres. You’ll feel you’ve achieved something wonderful and if you break the whole garden into a series of small projects it suddenly appears more manageable. Here are three to get you started.

Project Pleasure

Strawberry Pots You don’t need a huge patch to enjoy growing strawberries. Plant a few in pots as a treat. Buy young, rich green plants which have been certified virus-free. Plant 3-4 in a 12 inch (30cm) clay pot. The crowns (where shoots meet roots) should be level with the compost surface. Water them in and stand in the shelter of a house wall. If you have a greenhouse or a cold frame they will establish more quickly and fruit earlier. Pinch off any runners which form.

Grass Lawns always look bedraggled after the winter. Remove dead grass by raking the surface with a wire toothed rake. Improve drainage on heavy soil by spiking it with a garden fork every 6 inches (15cm) or so, to a depth of about 4 inches (10cm), giving the fork a good wiggle each time. Sweep sharp sand into the holes with a broom. Then mow the lawn with the blades set on high and remove the clippings. Two weeks later apply a combined weed killer and fertilizer. If you’re lucky it will rain within 24 hours. If not just water it in. Mow weekly to keep the lawn thick and healthy.

Seating Don’t forget an all weather seat so you can sit and contemplate all your hard work over a cup of tea or a nip of something stronger. Teak from renewable resources is fantastic but cast iron or aluminium is also good, though you’ll need a cushion to protect your posterior on cold days! Position it in a sunny area. Buy a few flowering daffodils, tulips and pansies and plant them in a pretty pot next to the bench, then sit back and enjoy.
