To enhance your shopping enjoyment over the Christmas Season, the fun starts off in our Merry Town Centre with the Spectacular switching on of the Lights on Friday 4th at 7 pm. This is closely followed by the Civic Christmas Carols on Sunday 13th at 4pm, at St. Mary’s Church just a few steps away from the Broadway.
was delighted to welcome so many people to the Thatcham Vision celebration recently. It was held as a big thank you to all our volunteers and partners who helped write the Vision plan and who will now be key in turning those plans into actions. During the evening we had an inspiring talk by Gary Poulson from West Berkshire Volunteer Centre on the many benefits of volunteering, some wonderful live jazz music and the chance to discuss the 65 actions in Vision’s plan for Thatcham.
st By David Conque
We are now forming the Actions Teams that will carry out the tasks to make Thatcham a better place to live, but we need more people to get involved. If you are passionate about a particular local topic or have a skill that we could use, then get in touch through www.thatchamvision.net or call Tessa Hall on 01635 863592. Our teams cover all areas of local life and would be delighted to hear from you. Finally, I would like to say a big thank you and wish all our volunteers, partners and supporters a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Only with your help can Vision realise its goals for Thatcham.
St. Mary’s Church is one of Thatcham’s hidden gems, and is a particularly joyful place to visit at this time of year. It is often open weekdays around 9 to 10am and again in the afternoon at 4pm, for visitors who wish to rest and quietly reflect after their shopping expedition. If you wish to finish on a high note there is the St. Mary’s Family Crib Service on Christmas eve at 4 pm. A Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year to you all!

Scouts to japan L
ast summer, a group of 30 Explorer Scouts from Berkshire went on the trip of a lifetime to Japan. An incredible experience for all and one we will never forget! Our trip began in Tokyo where the highlight was going up the Skytree, to get an amazing view over the whole city. After this we took the bullet train down to the Jamboree. Japan hosted the 23rd World Scout Jamboree, an event that occurs every 4 years and with 40,000 scouts from 150 different countries.
The theme for this year’s Jamboree was ‘WA’, the spirit of unity, so activities were centred on the idea of living together in harmony. This included a trip to the Hiroshima Peace memorial as our stay coincided with the 70th anniversary of the bomb, an emotional but life changing experience. After the camp, we set of for Ishikawa where we stayed with Japanese families. Everyone had very different, but all very memorable experiences. We had the time of our lives there and I’m sure would all leap at the chance to go back!

esearch has shown that singing is good for the heart and this is why Heart Research UK have chosen this as a fun idea for people to take on during the festive period and to raise money for the great work that they do. So far this year, they have gained support from an array of celebrities such as Lorraine Kelly, Brian McFadden and X Factor finalists Chloe Jasmine and Stevie Ritchie who’ll all be raising money from their own singing events in December. local supermarket and donate a percentage of the tickets sales or pass around a collection bucket. If you’re a school you could turn your annual nativity play into a Sing for your Heart event and ask parents to make a donation or sell tickets. If you’re an individual who loves singing or in a band, why not put on a gig and donate a percentage of the proceeds. Or if you work at a pub or you’re their local punter, why not advertise to host a sing-a-long and get
everyone in your local area together during Christmas week to sing festive songs and pass round a collection bucket. They don’t mind how you organise it or how you raise the money – the choice is yours. They just want everyone singing for their hearts this Christmas and raising money to help find a cure for heart disease. It’s so easy to get involved, all you need to do is contact Heart Research UK for your FREE Sing For Your Heart kit, set a date and venue to host your Sing, advertise for an audience with posters in the pack, nominate someone to go round with a collection bucket at the event and then send in the money to them.
You can sign up online at www.heartresearch.org.uk/sfyh or call 0113 234 7474 or email community@heartresearch.org.uk Don’t forget – all money raised locally is spent locally on helping hearts near you.

BUSINESS FOCUS
My new employee is performing really badly - do I have to follow the disciplinary procedure before I can dismiss them?
New employee Y
The only difference is employees with less than 2 years’ service are not usually able to claim unfair dismissal. Note that I have used the word usually.
ou shouldn’t treat new employees differently from anyone else.
Most new employees need training and support to help get them up to speed. To keep them on track regular review meetings setting out what’s expected and giving them feedback on how they’re doing are vital. That way when you tell them they’re not performing it won’t come as a surprise and they are more likely to accept your decision to ‘let them go’.
That’s because if employees are dismissed for a ‘protected’ reason their dismissal will be considered automatically unfair. This may include for example sacking someone because they are pregnant, taking leave for a family emergency, whistleblowing or because they are part-time. And, if employees claim their dismissal related to for instance their sex, nationality, religion, disability or age they don’t need to have 2 years’ service either.
Just like your longer serving staff you should give them details of any concerns and complaints about their performance in writing, the opportunity to meet and discuss those concerns and appeal against any action you take.
So my recommendation is to follow the disciplinary procedure for all employees, no matter how long they have been employed. The use of probation periods for new employees may enable you to apply some ‘short cuts’ to your existing procedures - as long as they are consistently applied and comply with the ACAS Disciplinary code of practice. Before taking action talk with an HR practitioner or Legal Advisor.

Pantomime Pantomime is a marvellous and wonderful (if a little eccentric!) British institution.
P
How did this curious British institution come about?
antomimes take place around the Christmas period and are nearly always based on well-known children’s stories such as Peter Pan, Aladdin, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty etc. Pantomimes are performed not only in the best theatres in the land but also in village halls throughout Britain. Whether a lavish professional performance or a hammy local amateur dramatic production, all pantomimes are well attended.
Slapstick is another important part of a British pantomime - the throwing of custard pies, the ugly sisters (who are always played by men) falling over, lots of silly costumes including of course, the pantomime horse which is played by two people in a horses costume.
Audience participation is a very important part of a pantomime. The audience are encouraged to boo the villain whenever he enters the stage, argue with the Dame (who is always a man) and warn the Principal Boy (who is always a girl) when the villain is behind them by shouting out “He’s behind you!”.
So how did this curious British institution come about?
An example of audience participation: Wicked Queen in the pantomime version of Snow White. “I am the fairest of them all” Audience - “Oh no you’re not!” Queen - “Oh yes I am!” Audience - “Oh no you’re not!”
d you. . . He’s behin n’t. . . oh, no he is is! oh yes he
By the end of the pantomime, the villain has been defeated, true love has conquered all and everyone lives happily ever after.
Pantomime literally means “all kinds” of “mime” (panto-mime). It is generally acknowledged that British pantomime is modelled on the early masques of the Elizabethan and Stuart days. In the 14th century the early masques were musical, mime or spoken dramas, usually performed in grand houses although by the 17th century they were really no more than an excuse for a theme party. The timing of the British pantomime at Christmas and the role reversal of the lead characters (the principal boy being played by a girl and the Dame
by a man) may have also evolved from the Tudor “Feast of Fools”, presided over by the Lord of Misrule. The feast was an unruly event, involving much drinking, revelry and role reversal. The Lord of Misrule, normally a commoner with a reputation of knowing how to enjoy himself, was selected to direct the entertainment. The festival is thought to have originated from the benevolent Roman masters who allowed their servants to be the boss for a while.
DID YOU KNOW. . .
Small inset picture : The Christmas Pantomime colour lithograph bookcover, 1890, showing the harlequinade characters.
The Cinderella story we know today was written by Charles Perrault in 1697, based on a traditional folk tale. Pantomime dames – men playing female characters and dressed in outrageous clothing – began to appear in panto in the early 19th century.

We get many referrals from larger retail car garages, for larger jobs including engine and gearbox changes to more general services including M.O.Ts and just recently, we had a referral from a tyre company one Saturday who were trying to perform a wheel alignment on a Volkswagen Golf, but
could not, due to a bolt being ceased on the rear arm of the car. We were able to fit the customer in on the same day and within a couple of hours, the car was fixed and the customer was back on the road. We have also had a customer who contacted us one Saturday evening , looking to get her car M.O.T’d as soon as possible as it was due to run out. We booked her in for the very next day on the Sunday morning. She was so grateful for our prompt response and the fact that it was all
resolved for her on the Sunday. Subsequently she has been back for her car to be serviced and some impartial advise on possibly selling the vehicle. Since joining BuzzConnect, I have been to the monthly networking at the Donnington Grove Hotel where I met lots of local business people. BUZZCONNECT
We hear so often from top business people, athletes. . . pretty much anyone actually who has achieved anything of significance, that 80% of their success is down to mindset. So why then is this the most overlooked area when we are developing and growing as business owners?
Eighty Percent Mindset T
he rules of success are so simple.
l Be really good at what
you do.
l Have a clear vision l Create a plan for how
you’re going to achieve your vision.
l Break your plan down into
tasks and hold yourself accountable to achieving those tasks.
l Get help, education
and support where you need it.
l Stay motivated, or at least
driven, every day to keep moving forwards with aligned action.
l Be fearless.
l Stay healthy and balanced,
as success is a long game
l Never ever give up.
Simple, but not remotely easy! Applying these rules consistently is challenging. To be successful we need to be constantly adapting, changing and growing to align ourselves with the results that we want, in business and in life. Change is hard though and this is why: 95-99% of your thoughts and actions are unconscious. The unconscious part of our brain is like a computer system, it just keeps repeating patterns of thought and behaviour.
Habits When we want to change something it’s a conscious thought or decision to do so. When we attempt to make the change however, we are then faced with resistance from the unconscious brain. The processing power of the unconscious brain is 1 million times more powerful than the conscious. We must stop being passive and accepting our lot and start getting involved in our own Personal Development. The good news is there is more support than ever available from online courses, YouTube videos, business and personal coaches and local clubs. If you’re looking for more success in your business, start by developing the mindset for success.

As a video producer many business owners ask me why they need to use video content on their website and across their social media platforms. WWW.DUDLEIGHFILMS.COM
The power of video Y
ouTube is the second largest search engine (owned by Google) and Facebook users actually posting 75% more videos than last year, there is no better time to utilise this powerful medium. It’s all about engagement and visitor retention. Web pages that include video have longer ‘linger’ times and site visitors are more likely to buy your product or service after having watched a video. Carefully planned and executed video can weave together the elements of imagery, dialogue, and music to deliver your message in an appealing and compelling way that no other medium can offer. This is very powerful. It can stimulate an emotional experience for the viewer
which instantly makes it more memorable compared to text or pictures. They say that a picture paints a thousand words. Dr. James McQuivey of Forrester Research has stated that one minute of video represents the equivalent of 1.8 million words.
Modern smart phones can record exceptionally good quality high definition video and providing you make sure the audio quality is good there is no barrier to anyone producing useful and engaging content for their website.
A picture paints a thousand words. . .
This emotional connection helps to build brand familiarity and trust. Video does not need to be expensive or elaborate in its production value. I often advise clients that the best way to start using video is through video blogging or simple ‘Talking Head’ videos. Every business has useful information to share. A good place to start is to look at your frequently asked questions.

you could also include Christmas table confetti and seasonal items such as Santa shaped cruet. For many Christmas Day is one of the few times when three or more courses will be served. FOOD REVIEW
The Bear at Hungerford is an impressive establishment with a history that might surprise you.
O
riginally built in 1464 and at one time owned by Henry VIII, the Bear also boasts having entertained some very famous guests including; Queen Elizabeth I, and William III also stayed in December 1688 when plans were made for the throne of England to pass to William who was crowned with his wife Mary in 1689. You cannot fail to be impressed by the original beamed ceilings and many nooks and crannies, with numerous historic artefacts and pictures of Hungerford. Having been acquired by Old English Inns some three years ago, the Bear has undergone a major overhaul but the work has been carried out very tastefully to give a spacious clean feel with soft lighting that blends perfectly with the many ancient features. We visited the establishment on a Friday evening in November and the restaurant was near to full with diners and the bar area also appeared to be a popular alternative to the restaurant with the full restaurant menu available in very pleasant and relaxing surroundings. The restaurant has a warm feel with tasteful dĂŠcor and candlelit tables that immediately helped us to wind down after the stresses of the week.
with a
modern twist
We were welcomed on the night by Roger and the delightful Tanita who along with the other friendly staff attended to us very efficiently and professionally. Our starters were excellent and very generously proportioned. We chose chicken liver pate and pea soup. The pate was creamy, smooth and served with chunks of toasted bread and a crisp green salad. The pea soup was packed with fresh pea flavour and served with delicious warm bread and butter. For the main course my sirloin steak cooked medium rare was succulent and mouthwatering; the double cooked chips were found to be crisp and dreamily soft inside; with the trimmings I felt
this to be an excellent choice. Sea bass fillets with a pesto mash and vegetables were also highly rated. The sea bass was beautifully fresh and the chantonnay carrots were sweet and cooked to perfection served with a generous portion of mashed potato intriguingly flavoured with pesto. The Bear has an impressive wine list and the Rioja that came recommended was an excellent accompaniment to the steak. The Bear is clearly very popular and booking is recommended for busier periods. We had a very enjoyable evening and feel that it is an interesting alternative for folk from surrounding areas wishing for a change of scenery. We found the food to be good wholesome fayre at very affordable prices. 01488 682512 41 Charnham St Hungerford RG17 0EL

Hunger and poverty. Many of us won’t associate these problems with our own society but it’s a fact that 13 million people in the UK live below the poverty line. Five years ago food banks had scarcely been heard of, but today more than a thousand operate across the UK, giving assistance to people in need of basic supplies to survive.
Biscuits and coffee can be donated to Food Banks
Food Banks P
eople need to use food banks for a variety of reasons: redundancy, illness, benefit delay, changes in benefits, unexpected bills, underemployment and family breakdown to name a few. In today’s world of zero hours contracts and steadily rising food and fuel prices, an increasing number of people are finding themselves in need of help. The Trussell Trust – the UK’s largest network of food banks – fed nearly a million people in 20132014, over a third of which were children. Typically, clients are referred to food banks by front line care professionals such as doctors, social workers, health visitors and the police, who are trained to identify individuals in crisis. They issue vouchers which are exchanged at food banks for emergency food. Though all
food banks may not operate in the same way, the Trussell Trust provides emergency rations for a minimum of three days. All food donated to food banks comes from members of the public. This could be from individuals like you and me, but partnerships are also formed with schools, churches and businesses. Large collections are made during Harvest Festivals and there are also collection points in many supermarkets available throughout the year.
Once food is received at food banks, it is sorted and packed into boxes by volunteers, who also guide clients to agencies able to help them with longer term problems. None of us can do everything to solve the social problems around us, but all of us can do something. Donating to a food bank is one example.
Shopping List
To donate is easy. All you need do is purchase a few extra items with your weekly shop, then drop them off in the collection boxes situated near the checkouts. Most people decide on an amount they want to spend and keep on buying until this is reached! If you purchase budget brands, your money can go further and help more people.
Milk (UHT/powdered)
Items purchased should be non-perishable and in date - so anything in tins, packets and jars. If there isn’t a food bank near you but you would still like to help, you can make a cash donation, which can be done online in many cases.

It may be cold outside, but winter should not be the unhealthiest time of year for you and your family.

Osteoarthitis O
steoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative condition that can affect any joint, but generally weight bearing ones and it causes joints to become stiff and painful. Unfortunately osteoarthritis cannot be cured, but it is no reason to just give up and except pain. There is so much you can do to improve the symptoms, it isn’t just part of “getting old!” For milder symptoms, OA can be managed with gentle but regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, wearing suitable footwear and if needed using special devices to reduce any strain on your joints for everyday activities.
ASK MEL BUZZ OSTEOPATHY EXPERT
But did you know that osteopathy can help? In fact, a lot of the pain caused by osteoarthritis is actually from how we compensate for the pain. Such as avoiding weight bearing on your knee, so we limp and then a few months later we get hip and lower back pain??
Even when your body is telling you to hibernate, you can keep healthy and fit, no matter what the weather’s like.
4 ways to stay healthy Eliminate your sleep debt On average we sleep six-anda-half hours a night, much less than the seven to nine hours recommended. But in winter, we naturally sleep more because of the longer nights. Use the time to catch up.
Drink more milk You are 80% more likely to get a cold in winter, so making sure your immune system is in tip-top condition is important. Milk and dairy products such as cheese, yoghurt and fromage frais are great sources of protein and vitamins A and B12.
Eat more fruit and veg When it’s cold and dark outside, it can be tempting to fill up on unhealthy comfort food. It is important to ensure you still have a healthy diet and include five portions of fruit and veg a day. If you find yourself craving a sugary treat, try a juicy clementine or satsuma instead, or sweet dried fruits such as cranberries or apricots.

this winter Have a hearty breakfast Winter is the perfect season for porridge. Eating a warm bowl of porridge on a cold morning isn’t just a delicious way to start your day, it also helps boost your intake of starchy foods and fibre. This can give you energy and help you feel fuller for longer, stopping the temptation to snack mid-morning. Oats also contain lots of vital vitamins and minerals.
‘A problem shared is a problem halved’. The death of a loved one, depression, redundancy at work, unfulfilled life’s ambitions, anxiety, wanting to understand others better and wanting to feel more confident are personal challenges we all may face at some time.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Currently very popular and helps people to manage problems by changing the way they think and behave.
Why Counselling Might Help
S
haring our concerns with qualified, trained professionals can help, and following are some of the talking therapies on offer.
Counselling Available to all people and may be obtained on the NHS following a referral from your doctor. All sessions are conducted in complete confidence by counsellors who have undergone extensive study and training before being registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Counselling may also be provided by other professional bodies such as Relate and ChildLine (a voluntary organisation), for which there may sometimes be a charge. Evidence shows that counselling is very effective. For example, B Wickberg and C P Hwang found that 80% of women with major post-natal depression were fully recovered after treatment. Counselling can help a person be more positive, worry less and feel more confident. Additional types
of counselling/therapies include the following:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Currently very popular and helps people to manage problems by changing the way they think and behave. Negative patterns of thought about self and the world are challenged to develop a more positive outlook. Patients set goals with the therapist during sessions, which they work on in between sessions. This therapy is proven to help with mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, eating disorders, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and phobias. Information on CBT may also be found via self-help books and on-line computer courses.
contacts faced by intimate couples. Couples look at how factors such as lifestyle, religion and family values affect their relationship and are encouraged to resolve any conflicts they face together.
Psychotherapy Looks into a person’s past and how that affects the present. This is undertaken over a longer period of time than other forms of counselling and helps a person understand more about themselves, improve relations with others and enjoy life more.
Couples Counselling (Marriage Guidance)
Other therapies use different tools to meet people’s needs, for example play therapy finds what causes excessive anger, fear and worry in children through play; arts therapies (music, art and drama) help people express their feelings without having to use words.
Involves a couple and a therapist. The main aim is to improve communication and resolve problems such as lack of trust, abuse, life changes and family
Whatever our problems may be, we truly need not feel alone. Help is only a telephone call or a visit away, should we need it. 35

COOLANT Ensure that the coolant level is between the minimum and maximum markers. It is also important that there is sufficient anti-freeze in the coolant. If you are uncertain, look at your handbook or get a local garage to check the strength. Anti-freeze is cheap but resulting damage from a frozen engine can be expensive to repair.

Unfortunately trees were not meant to live in centrally-heated sitting rooms. It puts them under a lot of stress. So which trees survive Christmas best?
GARDEN VIEW
There’s something magical about bringing a bit of the outside indoors at this time of year.
Which Christmas tree? W
ell there are several species available to the British public. The main choices are between pines, spruces and firs.
Norway Spruce The traditional Christmas tree is Picea Abies, the Norway Spruce. Most popular they may be but they are actually least suited to the conditions inside the average home. Spruces are much more prone to shed needles than firs or pines.
Scots Pine and Lodgepole Pine Pinus Sylvestris and Pinus Contorta are respectively better known as the Scots Pine and the Lodgepole Pine. Their longer needles hold well but do make hanging decorations a bit tricky for small fingers, which is worth noting if your children like to help. If that’s not an issue the widely spaced branches show off larger baubles very well. The Corsican Pine (pinus Nigra Laricio) is not as common but has similar properties.
Noble Fir Firs are the best choice and if you can, plump for
Abies Noblilis, the Noble Fir. In its perfect form it’s hard to beat: uniform in shape with more open branches on the top, its flat, short needles have amazing retention properties. It’s trickier to grow well than most other trees so expect to pay a bit of a premium.
Nordman Fir This is a close second and is easily available now as many tree growers invested heavily in the species. They are generally cheaper than the Noble Fir so a good choice if cost is an issue. The Fraser Fir and the lemon-scented Douglas Fir are also worth seeking out. Once you have your tree, make a fresh cut across its trunk
and give it a good drink of tepid water before bringing it inside. Secure it properly in a specially made base which is the right size for your tree! All that is left to do is decorate your chosen tree with glittering baubles and pretty fairy lights to set your room aglow. . . Happy Christmas!
Eco-Friendly? For true eco-friendliness buy British-grown trees. Most councils offer a Christmas tree shredding service. The shreddings are then composted. Artificial trees are generally non-biodegradable. Christmas tree farms act as a carbon sink, fixing environmental carbon dioxide.

Letters from Father Christmas
DECEMBER
DECEMBER
KRAMPUS 04/12
BY J.R.R TOLKIEN
M
ention Tolkien and you will undoubtedly think of his epic adventures - The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. As father to four children Tolkien had a softer side. Each December over the course of their childhood he wrote and illustrated detailed letters from Father Christmas; letters populated by a cast of characters which included elves, goblins and a clumsy polar bear. Through these letters, Tolkien entertained his children with stories of high-jinks at the North Pole. It’s true the language can seem a little formal and stilted at times by today’s standards, but they were written in the 1920s and 30s and Tolkien is as much a product of his time as any author. His affection for his children shines through every page regardless.
