Vision Update Thatcham Vision, for those who don’t know, is the local organisation which writes Thatcham’s Parish Plan in co-operation with the local councils.
I Chamber update Topic Town Infrastructure After the Chambers long Campaign it is relieved to hear from Thatcham Town Councillors that the Public Conveniences will remain open.

This is a vital service for the Town Center, especially for the young & elderly, and out of towners visiting our local shops.

Of course we work very closely and with the approval of Thatcham Town Council and West Berkshire Council, but our strength comes from the community, so if you want to know more or even get involved yourself then we’d love to hear from you.
The plan has been put together not by a small committee in a darkened room, but by our huge team of over 100 extra-ordinary local residents who volunteered their time, enthusiasm and above all wisdom to construct a set actions to improve the town. It is also our desire to co-operate with local authorities on other matters, such as the redevelopment of the Kingsland Center to ensure that it is done sympathetically with regards to The Broadway Shopping Area.
In January, Thatcham Town Council approved and adopted the refreshed Parish Plan put together by Thatcham Vision and over 100 volunteers from the local community.

participation in the community, with all its benefits. l To help with inter-club
communications and also between clubs and the community. l Better to represent Sport
to decision makers and be a resource for them. l Understand all local
resources and the need for more as Thatcham evolves and grows. Thatcham Sports can be better ‘stitched together’ with the help of TSN. A new website is to be launched soon, which will help the community find out details of sports clubs and their offer. Together with a detailed survey of clubs their current members and needs this will form the basis of resource planning.

confident that the results gave a representative view of the Community’s needs.
David Conquest, Chair of Thatcham Vision, said “I am delighted that Thatcham Town Councillors were so impressed with the new Parish Plan. Over the next five years Vision will seek to make the improvements laid out in the plan and it is our hope that, with the full support of the Council, we can improve Thatcham for our families, our friends, our colleagues and the community around us.”
Subsequently, volunteers took part in a number of focus groups to consider issues raised in the survey. This information was used to formulate a list of actions to improve the social and economic well-being of the town. The parish planners then sought the public’s thoughts on the results of this work to ensure the community had their say on the final draft.
Sir Ian Botham really, really hates trolls and encourages the public to watch his videos and “natter” with him.
Our objective being friendship and fellowship, we meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at a Newbury Hotel for a convivial luncheon and to enjoy after dinner speakers from all walks of life. Optional social activities and events are also offered.

?
Richard Benyon
Buzz talks to Richard Benyon about five key commitments in his coming term of office.
4.
With a record number of businesses created over these past five years, and with Britain growing faster than any other major advanced economy last year, I will ensure that local businesses have all the tools necessary to continue to expand. This Conservative Government is to conduct a review into business rates and will preside over a radical simplification of the tax system, abolishing the annual tax return.
1.
To protect our local NHS and improve care for those with mental illness.
I will continue to champion our fantastic local health service, which is supported by our strong economy. Spending on our NHS will increase every year of this parliament and, crucially, we will ensure access to a GP seven days a week. I look forward to visiting the new renal dialysis and cancer care units to be constructed at West Berkshire Community Hospital. 2.
2.
To ensure continued investment in our local transport networks.
Over the course of this parliament, Newbury will benefit from the electrification of the Great Western Mainline. I am already pressing the new team at the Department for Transport to ensure this programme extends beyond Newbury, to serve both Kintbury and Hungerford. I am
also continuing to call for more direct services from London, given our increasing population and the change in working patterns.
3.
Affordable housing for local hardworking people.
We need to build more homes and I will continue to work alongside West Berkshire Council in this regard. This government is committed to a £1 billion Brownfield Regeneration Fund, preparing sites for development. I will, additionally, support the continuation of the Help to Buy scheme and the new Help to Buy ISA, allowing our young people a chance to own their own home.
Ensuring West Berkshire is the best place in Britain to start and grow a business.
5.
Supporting local schools and ensuring our young people have the best possible start in life.
Our children only get one chance at an education. Locally, we have an ambition to ensure all our schools will be rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’, and I look forward to visiting many schools again over these next five years. 2 million apprenticeships have been created since 2010, 3,510 in this constituency, and I will be championing the creation of 1 million more.

Ask Nigel Buzz Social Media Expert
Do you have Klout on social media? R
ecruiters looking for social media savvy souls often rely upon Klout (www.klout.com) and can dismiss anyone with a score of much less than 50, rising to beyond 70 when they are looking for a heavy hitter. It can also be a valuable guide to the impact you are having on social media. Of course you can look at the analytics on each platform and indeed you should if you are serious about promoting yourself or your business on social media. However
through cunning algorithms Klout pulls this together and your score is gently rewarded simply by consistent publishing on channels simply registered with the app or website. However it is the engagement those posts encourage that really boosts your score – and you cannot fake that, hence
gaining ‘Klout’ My own score has been in the low to mid 60s for some time now, which puts me in the top 10% of users with the average being only 40. Buzz has a Klout score of 52 and climbing as it shares great content from the magazine and website.
business focus
Do they love you on LinkedIn? Fawn over you on Facebook? Trust you on Twitter? Inspire on Instagram or go gooey-eyed over your Google+? The truth is it can be hard to measure your real impact on social media which is why many look to Klout.
There is an issue for some over how they use different channels – you might be professional on LinkedIn but use Instagram for fun family photos or be totally crazy on Facebook. If you link them to Klout to boost your score your channels will be accessible to anyone visiting your Klout page. Whatever you do if you want to measure your clout online you need Klout and if it doesn’t measure up . . . well be sure to ask Morgan PR for help! Coras 2015 reaches its climax and the winner is. . .
A
fter a hard fought contest, Shawn Khorassani announced the winner of Coras 2015 at a glittering gala evening on 7th May at Hilton Newbury Centre Hotel.
This year the three finalists Avanatta, Scentrel and International Oils and Gums competed for the potential investment pot of up to £50,000, a £1,000 cash prize and 6 months mentoring from Shawn. After a closely fought contest International Oils and Gums was named the winner. However, there was a definite twist this year. from left to right clockwise: Abdi Adam and Dr Ahmed Ali (International Oils and Gums), Sam Farmer (GM Hilton Hotels Newbury) and Shawn Khorassani (Coras), Richard Pursey and Georgina Pursey (Avanatta) and Ron Jones, Melodie McKenzie-Jones (Scentrel)
The Coras event enables networking but beyond that – and more importantly – it exists to support and develop new business. The enthusiasm and commitment from all the applicants has been vital in making this event a success. The fact that Shawn decided each applicant has the opportunity of getting up to £50,000 investment each shows how close the contest was this year. Sam Farmer, General Manager of the Hilton Hotels Newbury, host and sponsor of the event said “We are proud to be associated with Coras – it is a key feature of the business calendar in Newbury, supporting new business development.” The real time competition is what gives it the edge. The presentations were crisp, interesting and professional - all round, an entertaining evening with excellent well deserving finalists.”
To read more about the Coras event and the finalists, please go to www.localbuzzmagazine.com and search for Coras.

‘. . . this is the wonderful thing about Avanatta, bullies are not welcome and not tolerated. All social media should be like this.’ 22
Sir Ian Botham
Sir Ian Botham needs little introduction to those of us that can remember him almost single handedly beating the dominant Australians and lifting English cricket (and the Country) out of the doldrums. He was our lion, our talisman and one of the finest all-rounders of all time.
A
s an English icon he was full of endless self-belief which continued beyond his cricketing days and into charitable fundraising, undertaking a total of 16 long-distance walks with his next campaign taking him across South Africa later this year. He created the Beefy Foundation and has raised more than £20 million for charities including Leukaemia Research. As an early adopter of social media Sir Ian recently joined Avanatta (founded in Newbury!), the new video-based social network that is taking on the established giants of Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat. Sir Ian said: “Trolling has sadly become a way of social media Life. You will struggle to find any popular person on Twitter who hasn’t been trolled at one stage or another. I doubt there is a single Celebrity who hasn’t been subjected to abuse and anti-social behaviour. This bullying has got to stop and Avanatta is leading the way. Their software automatically blocks trolls, something that Twitter and others simply don’t do. The others hide behind freedom of speech, openly protecting trolls above those that have been hurt and bullied. It is wrong. Common decency and respect should surely be above the right to offend? I have been trolled on many an occasion as have many of my friends. It makes my blood boil. Nobody should be subjected to abuse and hatred. This is the wonderful thing about Avanatta, bullies are not welcome and not tolerated. All social media should be like this. Well done Avanatta for leading the way. I would welcome anyone to follow me on Avanatta, watch my videos and ‘natter’ with me. All in a safe and protected environment.” 23

D
id you know that Pickleball is 50 years old this year (2015) started in the USA back in 1965 and it has travelled around the world.
Pickleball? Pickleball is a fun family bat and ball game that is played on a badminton size court with two or four players (single or doubles), each player uses a paddle (bat) to hit a plastic wiffle ball over a 34 inch high net.
Also did you know that West Berkshire has the only purpose built pickleball court in Europe. Pickleball is easy for beginners to learn and in time can develop into a quick fast-paced friendly competitive game. Experienced players can join in with regional, national, European and even world tournaments, if they feel so competitive and fancy the challenge. Pickleball started in 1965 and has spread around the world. The USA Pickleball currently estimates there are more than 500,000 active Pickleball players in the USA alone. The UK has approximately 500 regular players with around 25 known groups/clubs. Newbury & Thatcham Pickleball is a friendly group of people (aged from 8 to 85) sharing a common passion for the sport, we are looking for new players of all ages and abilities. We can bring Pickleball to your group, village, community, youth group or school to try the sport and talk 24
about the benefits of Pickleball in the community. We’ll give everyone an opportunity to try Pickleball and offer help set up their group, we also offer training, advice and help to join local tournaments. Contact Ron or Jules Brown Email ntpickleball@gmail.com or call Ron on 07500 061923
A broken pony-roller belonging to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club was the catalyst which led to the birth of the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world: Wimbledon.
W
hen the roller broke in 1877 the members decided to hold a lawn tennis competition to raise funds for repair.
Anyone for Tennis? It’s Wimbledon fortnight
There were 22 male competitors who each paid a one guinea entrance fee. The champion was 27-year-old Spencer Gore who won 12 guineas and yes, it did rain on the day of the finals!
Wimbledon:
Fascinating Facts
The last British woman to win Wimbledon was Virginia Wade in the silver Jubilee year, 1977.
In spite of the weather the competition was such a success that it became an annual event. In fact there have been only ten Wimbledon-free years since that first competition: four years during the First World War and six during the Second World War. At the start the only event was the gentlemen’s singles. Then, in 1884 the ladies’ singles and the gentlemen’s doubles were added, followed by the ladies’ doubles and the mixed doubles in 1913.
The British dominated The Championships, as they are known, for the first 30 years: Ernest and William Renshaw, and Laurie and Reggie Doherty were national heroes. But our winning streak didn’t last. Until recently the last British man to win at Wimbledon was Fred Perry in 1936. He won a hat trick of titles just before the Second World War. Then, in the glorious summer of 2013 Andy Murray finally brought the title home to Britain and won the heart of the nation.
Only top-ranked amateurs were allowed to play until 1968 when the tournament became ‘open’, meaning that professionals could finally enter.
He’s on a high this year having married his fiancé Kim Sears in the spring. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if he made this a real fairytale year and won Wimbledon again?
It is the only tennis competition where players are required to wear all or predominantly white clothing. In 2002 Anna Kournikova had to change her black shorts for white ones on court! Every year about 27,000 kilos of strawberries, 7,000 litres of cream, 60,000 pints of Pimms and 14,000 bottles of Champagne are consumed by spectators during Wimbledon.

Are your headaches a pain in the neck? Although it is important to note that there are many different types of headache, one of the most common is known as a cervicogenic headache, which affects up to 18% of the population.
Ask mel Buzz Osteopathy Expert
A cervicogenic headache basically means head pain that originates from the neck and base of the skull. There are a number of different causes for these headaches, but the most common include previous trauma, repetitive movements or prolonged postures. Over time, these factors cause dysfunction particularly to the top 3 vertebrae in the neck and their surrounding tissues. This dysfunction then causes a referral pattern to the skull, as the nerves that supply the upper neck structures, also supply the skin overlying the head, forehead and the backs of your eyes and ears. So how can osteopathy help? l Joint release and mobilisation to

The Art of Garden Design
T
he shows give access to view cutting edge design ideas and innovation. Often obtaining our own garden perfection can seem a far off reality. We rush out to buy the must have plants, only to realise they just don’t work or unknowingly placing shade-loving plants in full sun, then having to relocate them to save them,
or we are just not happy with the look when it’s done. Fran Lawton at Lotus Design a three time RHS award winning designer has perfected gardens with inspiration from Mondrian in the art world to Italian mathematician Fibonacci from small courtyards gardens to 200 acre landscapes.

There are four types to choose from. Mineral wool matting Sold in rolls and is laid between the joists, with a second layer placed at right angles to cover the joists.
Rigid insulation boards Can be laid in lofts used for storage. Laid on top of mineral wool, wooden boarding is then fitted on top of the insulation boards. Alternatively, floor boarding pre-bonded with insulation board is available.
loose-fill insulation If your loft space is irregular use loose-fill insulation. Sold in bags, this is poured between the joists to the right depth.
fire-retardant insulation Finally loose, fire-retardant insulation material should be blown into loft areas that are hard to access. A professional should be hired for this job which takes no more than a few hours. In all other cases if you are experienced at DIY you should be able to fit the loft insulation yourself, but wear a protective mask and gloves if handling mineral wool.
Loft Insulation We all know that heat rises, so if your loft isn’t adequately insulated your home could lose as much as a quarter of its heat through the roof. This is why loft insulation is so important.
To get a list of possible installers go to the National Insulation Association website or call your local Energy Saving Trust advice centre free on 0800 512012.

A new government and the same old housing problems
What can we expect next? We can certainly expect that there will be no ‘mansion tax’. This is welcome news for many in the south-east and particularly in London but it will invariably release the market into a new phase of inflation which is not particularly good news. We can expect inflationary pressure to resume therefore in the coming weeks and I would expect a surge in demand and prices over the next few months. For more property insight speak to Sean at The Buzz website blog.
Good proposals for the most part The new government has also pledged to extend ‘localism’ and increase local people’s rights and say in relation to new development. They also pledged to give further priority to infrastructure needs although they have not explained fully how they intend to do this.
E
veryone’s expectation was that there would be some sort of coalition or less formal agreement between parties that would allow for a functional government of some sort. Nobody really expected a majority government and the fact that the current government was re-elected with a majority was very welcome in property circles. That’s not to say one party is preferred, trusted or is necessarily better than the other but the reality is that the economy has been recovering, the current government and its programmes are well understood and this brings with it confidence and certainty in this very uncertain world.
build 275,000 new affordable homes, to ring fence 200,000 new homes for first-time buyers and to extend their Help to Buy scheme to cover another 120,000 homes. They also pledged to give Housing Association tenants increased right to purchase their properties and to intensify efforts to give priority to brownfield regeneration in preference to greenfield development.
This new government has a track record of pushing (and sometimes rushing) through changes in legislation designed to create more homes in less time. Permitted development rights for example will likely continue and be extended and this allows for redundant offices and other buildings to be converted into residential use with minimal planning approval. The new government has also pledged to
It’s difficult to criticise the government’s ambition for the housing market as most of its efforts are intended to devolve decisionmaking, control inflation, build in appropriate locations and provide infrastructure when it’s needed. The difficulties arise as always however in the implementation. Whatever our personal thoughts are on another Conservative government, we should all hope their positive programs can be put into effect and that in doing so they listen to the people, take on board their views and implement their programs in a way that works for the nation. If they do this successfully, we can expect the right type of new homes to be built to meet demand in the right locations and we can expect that the schools, roads, surgeries, hospitals are built before they are needed, not after. Let’s hope for the best and let’s hold them to their promises!
Market News* During Quarter 1 of 2015 house-prices fell slightly by 0.2% from the previous quarter. That’s a rise of 5.1% over one year (down from 7%). We are still over 20% below the last peak.

Keep family holidays a trouble-free, happy experience by following these tips!

Keep Entertained
Pack plenty for kids to do during long, tedious journeys. A device loaded with apps is nice and compact, but also consider hand held puzzles, colouring books, plasticine, puppets, stickers, reading books and cards.
Keep Safe Use a child locator if you are visiting busy airports or crowded tourist attractions. Your child wears a small unit strapped to a belt or shoe and you keep the transmitter. If you lose your child, set off the alarm and follow the sound to find them. For older kids, write your mobile phone number on their arm.
Keep Healthy Young children often get ill on holiday. Keep bugs at bay by having a supply of antibacterial wipes to clean restaurant
tables, cutlery and toilet seats and hand sanitiser for when there are no washing facilities nearby. A basic first aid kit is also a must! Pack pain killers or an easy to swallow medicine like Calpol, along with antiseptic wipes, plasters, anti-histamines and a thermometer.
Keep Memories Give smaller children a robust, child-friendly camera to record what’s important and interesting to them, and encourage older kids to keep a travel journal on postcards by writing messages to themselves - they make great memories for adulthood!
Happy Holidays!

Paris One of the most romantic destinations in the world, Paris feeds the mind, pampers the body and refreshes the soul. Wander hand in hand along the Champs Elysee, take a stroll along the banks of the Seine or climb up the Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame for stunning views of the city.
Marrakech Marrakech is a charismatic city at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Take an excursion together, walking from one mountain village to the next, stopping en route for glasses of mint tea. Experience Jemaa El Fna, the famed central square, a theatre of North African tradition and superstition, full of snake charmers, musicians and acrobats.

ardening is an ongoing affair and though timing is important, we often become overwhelmed by a sense of being ‘too late to plant’ by some arbitrary date. Often we bandy dates around as though they were written in stone. But in fact each season is different and garden planting dates are more flexible than traditional wisdom would have us believe! The good news is that it’s not too late to plant a great garden, even in June and July.
Never too late While it is true that fruiting plants like tomatoes and peppers really need to be set out now, many other summer producers will grow even more quickly from seeds planted in early summer, when the soil is already well warmed. You’ll be surprised how fast seeds will come up and explode with growth: cucumbers, beans and winter squashes, pumpkins, beets, carrots, chard and scallions, are all suitable for June planting.
Herbs It’s a great time to start a crop of ‘cut and come again’ salad mix and mild mustards. You can also plant heat-and-sun-loving herbs like basil, marjoram, chives, oregano, thyme and sage. Just keep the seed beds well moistened.
Even if you were super-efficient and your early-planted beans, squash, chard, carrots and basil plants are growing well, June is a terrific time to start a second crop to have ready for a late summer harvest, when the first crops of these staples have finished up. I usually start seeds every month, finishing sowing summer-producing vegetables in late June. In July and August, I move on to seeds for autumn crops like spinach, radishes, kale, leeks, peas, broccoli, more mild mustards and some pak choi.
Flowers June is not too late for flowers either. I’ve planted marigolds, sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias and nasturtiums at this time of year. That way when the first annuals have burned out by late summer I have a lovely smaller flush of blooms to enjoy. If you really want to get ahead, June and July are also good times to start seeds for perennials and biennials to bloom next spring. Sow seeds in a protected seed bed, and then transplant seedlings in the autumn to overwinter. Next spring you’ll be rewarded handsomely with garden full of glorious colour. Enjoy your garden. 37
