Free Cakes for Kids is a charity that helps families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for a child. With a range of enthusiastic local volunteers, the service is free, friendly and confidential. Free Cakes for Kids Newbury was set up by keen baker Anna Thomson in August 2012. Since then they have gone from strength to strength and have a small army of 16 volunteer bakers. So far they have made over 30 cakes for children ranging from newborn to 17 years old in Newbury and the surrounding district. Their service has also provided cakes for charity open days and launch events. They work with local organisations such as social workers, children’s centres, schools and food banks who refer families in need to them but you can also talk directly to them. The process is very simple. After filling out a simple request form, they will make the cake decorated with the child’s favourite theme. Hello Kitty and footballs are proving popular!
Cllr Martin Crane OBE Town Mayor of Hungerford Hungerford has earned a reputation over the last few years as having the best Christmas Lights in the Region and this Festive Season will see them brightening up the town, and spirits for longer as they will shine through to mid- January. A Family Support Worker at Chieveley and Area Children’s Centre said: “I just wanted you to know how pleased the mum was with the two birthday cakes you made for her. They made a huge difference to her children and they both had very happy birthdays. Thank you very much for the time and planning that must have gone into each cake and for making the whole process so easy.” For further information about Free Cakes for Kids in Newbury please contact Anna on 07787 124567 or e: freecakesforkidsnewbury@gmail.com www.freecakesnewbury.org
NEW LOOK! Since the magazine was launched, the quality of our editorial content and the internal design of the magazine had progressed to the point that it far outstripped the promise of the cover. We realised that it was time to align the quality perception and promise of the cover with what the magazine delivers internally and hence the new, more professional, more grown up and more stylish Identity with Buzz in upper case. The initial reaction to our new cover presentation has been very positive indeed.
Councillor Mike Cole Town Mayor of Thatcham Christmas is a time for family, friends and community. May I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

The superb Newbury-based Buzz Magazine has successfully won three awards at the prestigious 2013 Magazine Publishers’ Awards. Against tough competition, Buzz was crowned winner for Best Magazine Design, Best Website/ App and Overall Winner of the Best Community Magazine Awards 2013 as announced by Quay Systems.
Award Winning
Buzz Magazine
Judges Buzzing at Magazine Awards A glorious glossy full-colour magazine, Buzz is a fantastic combination of excellent news pieces, local information, events, celebrity interviews, competitions and much more. Originally starting in 2010, publisher Jackie Osborne was keen to produce a magazine that would encourage local trade and bring people together. Buzz combines a vibrant and professional design with high quality editorial which delivers a dynamic package that captures the attention of the community. Coralie Todd, Managing Director of Quay Systems commented, “Jackie’s nomination stood out for the judges in two main areas. For Best Magazine Design, it was felt that whilst it remained true to the feel of a community magazine, it had a house style that was innovative and consistent with well-balanced editorial and engaging cover lines. For Best Website/App category, the judges considered the website to be packed with information and features, easy to access and great looking.” “Local Buzz was selected as the overall winner because Jackie
has ensured that her branding and link to the local community is consistent across all her channels and she has given her magazine a bit of a twist that keeps it fresh and modern. Competition was incredibly fierce in this category - there are many well established magazines that are incredible at what they do - but it was felt that Jackie was a deserved winner because each area of her business that was visible to the judges was true to the ethics of our industry and each comes across as well polished.” The initial publication started at four issues per year and has been successfully increased and developed by Jackie. Buzz is delivered to homes, businesses and has various collection points across West Berkshire and North Hampshire (go to localbuzzmagazine.com to find the nearest to you). Buzz aims to help local businesses to thrive by offering competitive advertising solutions and ensures each advertiser gets the absolute maximum from their investment into the publication.
In addition to the magazine, Buzz also replicates their high quality branding on their website and app; enabling the community to discover the latest ‘buzz’ happening in the area. Determined that Buzz should represent the diversity of the area – its aim is both to bring the communities of West Berkshire and North Hampshire together and boost the economy. Jackie comments, “In setting up Buzz we recognised that there was an absolute need for a stylish magazine that combined fantastic quality with excellent content. We are keen to focus on providing a great read for the community, which is why you will find interesting news pieces and celebrity interviews such as with Lord Sebastian Coe, Clare Balding and Chris Tarrant – incredibly rare for a local publication. When we set up Buzz, we were determined to have the look and feel of a national glossy in a regional publication and we are delighted to have achieved recognition through these fabulous awards. ” 7

From a young age, Debbie had always wanted a career in show business.

Debbie
One of Debbie’s lifelong dreams was to choreograph a ballet company and she successfully achieved this with Ballet Imaginaire.
Buzz publisher Jackie Osborne caught up with Debbie McGee to talk about Debbie’s life achievements and her upcoming role in the Christmas pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Debbie McGee was born in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey to an English mother, Lillian ‘Bubbles’ Howes, and a Northern Irish father, Patrick McGee along with her two siblings. Her parents owned a small grocery shop until her father worked for a large gold manufacturing firm making rings amongst other jewellery. From a young age, Debbie had always wanted a career in show business.
Debbie the ballerina Until Debbie became Paul Daniels’s assistant and then wife, she used to be a ballet dancer. “I danced in Iran with The Iranian National Ballet and was living there when there was a revolution which brought me back to the UK.” Upon her return, Debbie started looking for work and during this period she was asked to be a fill-in presenter on BBC Radio Berkshire for Henry Kelly and this resulted in her getting her own show.
One of Debbie’s lifelong dreams was to choreograph a ballet company and she successfully achieved this with Ballet Imaginaire. However, due to commitment issues with her husband, she had no choice but to stop running a ballet company as it was a full time job. Managing Ballet Imaginaire also restricted Debbie’s ability to pursue any other career opportunities. Debbie’s main influences throughout her life and career were Hollywood movie stars. When asked which did she prefer TV or radio, Debbie said that she loved both equally and could never choose between them. Debbie and her husband have travelled all over the world performing their magic tricks but Debbie revealed that she had already travelled and performed worldwide even before she met Paul. “I had a wonderful time when I was dancing with the group called
The Second Generation; I travelled all over Europe working with artists including Abba and Chris de Burgh. The best time for me was winning The Golden Rose of Montreaux TV, as well as Paul and I receiving a Life Time Achievement award by the Hollywood Academy of Magical Arts.
Future Plans? At the moment Debbie and Paul are on a frantic tour consisting of 50 shows around the country. After this, Debbie is appearing in the pantomime at The Hexagon Theatre where she is playing the fairy called, “Queen of the Flower Fairies”, which has already bookings well into 2014.
Local Life Debbie McGee is involved with a few local charities including ‘The Lady Taverners’ and ‘Thames Hospice Care’. She loves the work that charities do and encourages other people to get involved. Even though, Debbie is a celebrity, she does not like to act like one, “Just like other people, I have a whole bunch of hobbies, including golf and going out on our boat.” Debbie recently published a book called “Dine with Debbie- A Magical Touch”. To receive a free copy of Debbie’s book please enter our online competition at localbuzzmagazine.com 119

Kennet School
Rookwood
Encouraging every child to achieve their very best Recently hailed by the ISI as a place “where pupils flourish”, Rookwood is an independent day & boarding school, nurturing girls and boys from their very first steps in the nursery all the way through to their GCSEs. Known for its family atmosphere and strong pastoral care, Rookwood prides itself on
encouraging each and every child to achieve their very best – with astonishing results. In 2013 44.5% of all GCSEs taken were awarded an A*/ A with several pupils gaining straight A* for 9 or more GCSEs - testament to Rookwood’s small class sizes and dedicated teaching.
Prospective pupils and their parents are warmly invited to experience Rookwood’s unique atmosphere at the next open morning on Wednesday 29th January 2014, 9.30am-12.30pm (01264 325900 - www.rookwood.hants.sch.uk).
A warm welcome at The Abbey The Abbey School is a vibrant and welcoming community of almost 1100 girls aged 3-18 years.
Unrivalled academic excellence is achieved in a supportive pastoral environment while an exceptional extra-curricular programme enables girls to develop their interests and talents. A new academic year begins
On 4th September, 1820 pupils arrived ready and eager to learn. 275 Year 7s made an excellent start to their secondary education. The Rising Lower Sixth, have been joined by over 20 pupils from other secondary schools, attracted by the excellence of Kennet School. Added into this mix, are 15 new teachers, and I am delighted to say all our newcomers are learning together, about the customs and practices of our school. As tradition demands, I welcomed both staff and pupils at the beginning of the year, in specially organised assemblies, so that I could be clear about the aims for the year and how they were to be achieved. Outside the classrooms, already a huge range of activities, particularly in the sporting arena; elsewhere, practices and rehearsals have already begun for the various Christmas productions. The ambition and eagerness of the whole school community, has not been diminished by the first rains of the winter and we look forward to a fantastically successful academic year. P G Dick Headmaster

Christmas Cookies Makes about 48 cookies
INGREDIENTS For the cookie dough 3/4 cup butter, unsalted; softened 1/2 cup sugar 1 egg 1 tb lemon peel; finely grated 1 ts vanilla
choosing your tree
1/4 ts salt
Have you ever thought about cutting down your own Christmas tree at one of those Christmas tree farms? Look for one near you and take the whole family to choose the right Christmas tree. Cut it down yourselves, take it home and decorate.
2 1/4 cups flour, all purpose; unsifted 1 tb water; (use 2 if required)
For the icing 3 egg whites 1 lb sugar, powdered 2 ts water; (use 3 if required)
Method Beat together butter and sugar in small bowl with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, lemon peel, vanilla and salt. Gradually beat in flour until thoroughly incorporated. Add water, a few drops at a time, only until dough starts to come away from side of bowl. Wrap dough in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until firm, about 2 hours. Preheat oven to 350F/ Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease 4 cookie sheets. On lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 3mm thickness. Cut out various shapes using cookie cutters or homemade cardboard patterns, or freehand. Make small holes with wooden pick if planning to hang cookies. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until beginning to brown around edges. Remove cookies to wire rack to cool before decorating.

Prepare icing: Beat egg whites in small bowl with electric mixer until foamy. Slowly beat in the powdered sugar. Continue to beat until thick and creamy. Add just enough water to get a good spreading consistency. Tint with food colouring, if you wish. Spread evenly over cookies. Decorate with glitter and sprinkles.

Christmas is a special time of the year and although many people find it stressful, it does not need to be. You should enjoy spending time with family and friends, since for many people; Christmas is the only time of the year that these people are seen. To make the Christmas season less stressful for you and your family, you should plan some fun activities to lessen the stress and make the holidays even more memorable and enjoyable.
One way that many people find success with when trying to think of fun family activities is to remember back to their own childhood days and remember things that you did with your parents or relatives or friends. Maybe some of those things that had almost been a regular part of the holiday season have fallen by the wayside over the years. If that is the case, maybe it’s time to bring them back!
Activities Create an atmosphere that brings memories. For example, one standard holiday tradition in many households is baking cookies and then decorating them. You have many to choose from, including favourites like chocolate chip, gingerbread and even simple sugar cookies. Invite some friends over to help you eat the cookies. Not only do the cookies taste great, but the smell of freshly baked cookies will fill your house, and when you smell freshly baked cookies during the year, you will have warm and pleasant thoughts about Christmas at home. You could also bake other things like peanut brittle, fudge, or maybe even taffy. Or you can get even more creative and make some chocolate covered pretzels or pretzel sticks. And of course, especially if you live further north where it gets chilly at this time of year, be sure to have some hot cocoa around with whipped cream.

Craftsman and business owner, Robin Cruikshank, talks to Buzz about his experience of the interior design world of the 70s and 80s, with the help of business partner Ringo Starr.
Working with Robin was brought up in Kent by a Scottish father and a French mother but went to live with his auntie and uncle when his parents divorced. His mother talked him into an agricultural career but Robin soon learned this was not the career for him. After graduating agricultural college, Robin applied to the Central School for Arts and Craft but was turned down due to a lack of experience. Designer Terence Conran opened a new furniture factory in Camberwell and offered

in Abu Dhabi to design the interior of the palace with £12 million dollars. Robin says “When we entered the competition former Tory Prime Minister, Edward Heath very kindly sent a reference to the Abu Dhabi government.
Soon after Robin set up his own company when he met a young buyer called David Bishop with his own furniture showroom. One day he asked Robin to meet him at a special address which turned out to be the Beatles new headquarters. When Ringo Starr bought his house he wanted his own designs to be made so Robin was sent along to help. Eventually Ringo said that it would be much cheaper if he bought into Robin’s company. This was the beginning of RoR. One of the most memorable RoR pieces was a Rolls Royce table, a coffee table with two Rolls Royce grills attached to each end. “The Rolls Royce table was Ringo’s idea.
The work with Ringo ended at the same time the contract with the Palace finished. Ringo allowed Robin to continue using the derivation of RoR, “I called it RoR International because we were looking to do work in the Caribbean. I met a group of former bankers who had started their own enterprise called Summit. One island was bought for me to do it up and then they hit a recession. They told me to continue work on the island and we designed and erected a five bedroom villa but no one came up with anymore money so it had to stop.”
Then their biggest commission to date came. After entering a competition, RoR were awarded a contract
Robin says “My biggest life achievement was really having this amazing bit of luck where I was introduced to the Beatles. When Ringo bought into my company for £3000, it wasn’t the money that made me happy, it was purely the enjoyment. I do still talk to Ringo and I am actually overdue to call him.” 27 19

How to get the best photographs for a Winter wedding! l
Remember it will get dark early so try to get pictures done as soon as possible, this will mean weather permitting you will be able to have them outside. A 3 o’clock church ceremony could mean it is already getting dark by the time you come out.
l
Prepare for the worst, pack umbrellas and wellington boots that match your colour scheme it is a lot easier than traipsing through snow in heels!
l
It is a good idea to leave a little longer for photos if you can. You may find that you need to have the pictures taken sporadically during breaks in the weather and this will take a little longer.
l
Ensure ushers are on hand to assist elderly guests from their cars if it is icy.

If you are getting married at Christmas, perhaps consider bringing a festive feel to the day with bauble place settings or put the Wedding favours inside Christmas Crackers!

service delivered with a smile is still very much alive at the Walmesley. His knowledge of the extensive wine list was outstanding and his wine recommendations for the evening proved to be inspired choices.
We visited the restaurant and received a warm welcome from the very friendly staff who appear to have a passion for high quality service. The dĂŠcor, background lighting and candlelit tables created an ambiance of decadent luxury.
The Head Chef Gert Pienaar created a varied and interesting menu that should suit most palates. The focus is on high quality fine dining using local fresh ingredients and our chosen dishes not only tantalized the taste buds, but were a visual feast, presented with the artistry of a very talented Chef.

bread and a light fried bhaji served with crispy seasoned onion rings and a delicious cauliflower compote that was light creamy and delicious. I started with the shellfish broth with crab and lobster lasagne and seared scallops. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the broth was light very tasty and very well presented. My partner chose the goat’s cheese. This dish was light, elegant and a visual work of art. The cheese was coated in walnuts and herbs that matched the light and creamy cheese perfectly. For the main course I chose the Lamb rump that was cooked to perfection and served with a jous and a delicious salad with tongue, couscous and courgette. Another dish cooked to perfection was the pan fried salmon with pepper and herb crusting which gave texture and superb flavour to a very special dish. The Malbec was an inspired choice for my lamb dish and my partner was equally enthusiastic about the Picpoul de Pinet. For dessert I selected a perfectly prepared apple
soufflĂŠ, strudel with pecan nut and cinnamon ice cream which was a delicious finale to a truly wonderful evening spent at one of the newest and surely most elegant restaurants to have arrived in the area for many years. www.walmesleyrestaurant.co.uk 01488 687010 27 25

Buzz interviewed WO1 (Warrant Officer) W G Casson-Smith about his role in the Band of the Adjutant General’s Corps (AGC Band), part of the Corps of Army Music (CAMUS) and how they have decided to widen their musical output from traditional military music to pop. Will’s interest in Army Music started in the Army Cadet Force as a junior musician. Following a successful audition he joined the Regular Army and then after basic training, Will was posted to the Band of the Coldstream Guards as a bassoonist. Will spent 10 years in the Band, travelling the world performing at high profile events before deciding to retrain as a Bandmaster, undergoing a 3 year course at Kneller Hall, the home of the Royal Military School of Music. In 2012 Will finished the Bandmaster course, and upon promotion to Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) was posted to the Band of the Adjutant General’s Corps (AGC Band). Based at Worthy Down Barracks in Winchester, the AGC Band was founded in 1994 as a traditional marching band but in 2011 the band started afresh as a specialist ensemble with the ability to cover a variety of different genres of music. They are known as a specialist contemporary group who can perform any music from a soldiers’ iPod. They play tracks such as Get Lucky by Daft Punk and Waiting All Night by Rudimental as well as some terrific jazz and soul not only to the young soldiers of today but also to the public at large. Will explains that the one of the main roles of army musicians is
From y r a t i l i M Music To to give support to troops serving away from their loved ones whilst on operations. However, the band appears throughout the UK as well. His most memorable ‘gig’ was the Afghanistan deployment when having a band ‘made someone’s day’. The army always had music from an early era, when little drummer boys were sent onto the battlefield to help motivate soldiers to advance. Now they still motivate and also ‘chillax’ soldiers all in the same day; army music is changing!
Buzz asked Will if there are any plans for a Christmas single. “As for a Christmas single”, replied Will, “that unfortunately is out of my hands. As soon as I know anything, I shall let you know. I would love to make one and maybe have a Christmas number one but we shall have to wait and see what happens”. If you would like to get a small taster of what the AGC sound like, head to YouTube and type Row 8 at Kneller Hall Live Performance 2013.

She has continued to hone her techniques and expertise in the field ever since, incorporating up to date procedures and best practice as they develop. How important it is for the patient to find a well qualified doctor? “It is very important as this will ensure the best treatment result and minimal risks and complications of procedures. For example, specialist doctors will have competent
knowledge in anatomy of the treated areas which is very important to avoid risk of nerve or blood vessels damage in the area and provide better result when treating the correct depth skin or muscle.” What is the most common procedure and why? “The most common procedure for non-surgical cosmetic treatment are Botulinum toxin & Dermal filler injection for facial lines and wrinkles and this is purely because they are minimal invasive and short downtime. Patients are able to resume their normal activities almost in no time after the treatments.”
Transform Cosmetic Surgery Transform Cosmetic Surgery is the UK’s leading provider of surgical and non-surgical treatments. Set in the grounds of Transform’s state-of-the-art cosmetic surgery hospital in west London, The Riverside Clinic is home to our range of non-surgical treatments including line and wrinkle smoothing, chemical facial peels, dermal fillers and laser hair removal. For further details of treatments, clinic open events and our 10% offer, contact 0500 20 20 20 or visit transforminglives.co.uk
Does the recent negative press have an impact on cosmetic industry? “There has been certain amount of negative impact on the business, particularly from the PIP breast implant. However, it has created awareness of patients in choosing to have treatments with experienced and specialists doctors in order to avoid complications and achieve the best result.” What can a patient expect when being treated by you? “Above all else, it is my aim to make my patients feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible, and to make them aware of their options and the realistic outcome of any treatment. . . I may have treated many patients, but I am always aware this may be your first experience. “ Currently Dr Johnson is offering a free consultation which will be extremely beneficial. Everyone is different and it needs an experienced doctor to advice on what is required. To book your appointment, please call 020 8232 6318. Look after your skin Whether you love it or loath it, Christmas is upon us again. It’s party time! So here are some quick tips to freshen up your skin: l
Mini facials are quick and easy giving you a hydrated base for your foundation and giving your skin a fresh party time glow.
l
After cleansing apply a scrub. Ideally scrub should be used a minimum of 3 times a week to help stimulate your circulation and smooth the complexion. Wash the scrub off and apply a mask.
l
For puffy or tired eyes, keep your toner in the fridge. Ice cold toner on cotton pads is a perfect way to freshen exhausted or distended eyes.
l
Protect those lips with a balm and then relax for 10 minutes before washing off.
l
Moisturise and wait a few minutes before applying foundation if you’re off out. You could do this every other day during this season, it all helps to nourish and protect your skin. This routine is great for the whole body too; it’s a nurturing time of year.
Be good to yourself!

How to keep your Cat off the Christmas Tree 1
3
Get the Novelty Over With You have just picked out a sturdy Balsam Fir that will look magnificent in the living room. Now put yourself in the frame of mind of your cat, when all of a sudden an eight-foot tree makes its way through the front door. His very own tree - he must investigate! Let him get it out of his system. Hold off decorating the tree for a day or two and let him thoroughly check out this unusual addition to the territory; let the novelty wear off.
2
Enjoy the Holidays With Your Cat As much as possible, try to preserve your cat’s normal routine. Keep up your daily playtime and cuddling sessions. Break open the new catnip a little early if you have to. Reserve a quiet room for your cat, away from the crowd.
Chewing on Needles is Unhealthy Your cat will most likely sniff the tree with great curiosity. However, he should not be biting on the needles. Many types of tree needles are toxic some more than others. Shortly after bringing in the tree, spray the needles with anti-chew repellent, which you can find at most pet supply stores. The spray is not harmful to trees and animals. At least it should; reactions vary. The application of repellent is a precautionary measure. While the tree is up, water it well, to reduce needle loss.
Make Sure the Tree is Steady If your cat does not actually scale the tree, he will almost definitely rub against it, he might bump into it while playing, and he may decide to use it as a scratching surface. The concern with each of these activities is that the tree will tumble down. Make sure you secure the tree firmly in its holder.
5
Cats and Christmas. . . such a delightful combination, but beware the dangers lurking in your Christmas tree. The cat may see the Christmas tree as something to play with! Follow these simple tips and you can keep both your cat happy and your tree safe!
4
Decorate Safely Tinsel, if ingested, can damage your cat’s insides. To a cat the strings of silvery tinsel draped over the tree are an irresistible toy. Keep the bottom of the tree empty. Lowhanging ornaments are likely to end up on the ground. Try to stick with shatterproof ornaments, or at least restrict breakable items to the top of the tree.

Make sure that you clean out your greenhouse ready for the next batch of fresh vegetables or vibrant flowers.
Ooh! Ah! Wow! No, this is not the sound of people watching fireworks; this is the sound of people admiring your garden! By following these easy steps, you can make extravagant fireworks seem like puny sparklers. How? Well, by making sure that no matter how big and colourful the fireworks are, everyone has their eyes firmly fixated on your wonderful garden. Make sure that you clean out your greenhouse ready for the next batch of fresh vegetables or vibrant flowers. Prepare your soil! The winter weather can be very rough to the grounds of your garden, so make sure that you are ahead of Mother Nature this November. Drain those pipes! If the weather is harsh, your garden has to deal with the consequences. Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.
And let’s not forget to rake up those leaves! If you leave them pests might chose to hibernate inside your garden. This is ok, until they awake in the springtime starving hungry and practically demolish your greenery.
Ponds freeze over too. However, don’t break the ice in the usual way. The shock wave this creates could kill some of the life in there. Instead, use warm water at the edge of the pond to create a hole in the ice. This will allow any build up of gases to escape.

a good The Twisted Tragedy of Miss Natalie Stewart By Leanna Renee Hieber
Yet before their courtship can really begin, there are more evils to face and dangers to unravel. Even though her voice has returned, Natalie is still caught in the web of supernatural forces. Now she must uncover the Society’s plots to resurrect the dead, decide whether she can fully trust the powerful Mrs. Northe, keep the jealous Maggie away from Jonathan, and rebuff the advances of the dashing macabre actor, Nathaniel Veil. Perhaps most daunting of all, she must also find a way to convince her father to accept Jonathon, for only together can Natalie and her beloved face the haunting challenges to come. This second Magic Most Foul book picks up where the first left off, offering enough background details for even readers new to the series to be swept up in the excitement. Natalie is an independent, courageous heroine who rises above the limits of 1880’s New York, and the text highlights her as Jonathon’s partner despite their differences in class status or the restrictions of nineteenthcentury society. Although the gothic story’s commentary on
femininity, disability, spirituality, and demonic possession might benefit from greater thematic connection, fans of the popular trends in paranormal romance will devour this unique book and eagerly await the third installment.

Historic interest might include connection with some local historic personality or event. Local listing is material consideration for any relevant planning application, but does not involve listed building consent or affect permitted development rights. It is supported by Government planning policy. In West Berkshire, it is managed by a voluntary body, the West Berkshire Heritage Forum, but the final approval to list is given by the West Berkshire Head of Planning. Ideas in what should be listed are put forward by parishes, in the case of Newbury by the Newbury Town Council Heritage Working Group. Examples of assets which are not currently listed are illustrated. Any enquiries or suggestions to myself, please.
Historic Portraits Four fine historic portraits are on display on the staircase at Newbury Town Hall: George III and Queen Charlotte, by the School of Allan Ramsay (c. 1762), John Winchcombe (“Jack of Newbury”), by Federico Zuccaro (1550), and Sir John Boys, the defender of Donnington Castle in 1646, possibly by John Riley (1660). As current Mayor of Newbury I am promoting a public fund to clean and restore them, so that they will look their best and be protected for be future generations.
