Issues Pet Welfare

During Emergencies Looking after pets if you need to leave your home due to an emergency West Berkshire Council holds the RSPCA Community Animal Welfare Footprint (CAWF) Gold Award for our work in supporting animals in evacuations. The Community Animal Welfare Footprints, established in 2008, remains the only scheme in England and Wales that recognises the commitment and achievement of local authorities, contingency planners and housing providers in improving animal welfare.

6

Making arrangements for your pet If you're evacuated in an emergency, it's up to you as an owner to make arrangements for your pets. The best way to make sure your pet stays safe is to agree with friends or family in advance that you will take in each others pets in an emergency. Make sure that this pet sitter does not live in the immediate area, or they may be having to evacuate as well. It's a good idea to put together a "pet emergency kit" in case you need to evacuate from your home. This should contain: • Carrier, litter tray and litter • Tinned or dried food, including bowls

• A photograph of your pet for identification purposes - perhaps put a photograph in your purse or wallet now so it is ready when you need it • Lead, collar and identity disk • Any medication your pet needs If you have advance warning that an evacuation is going to happen, try to place your pets somewhere safe such as a local cattery or boarding kennels - local animal charities may be able to help. If you're unable to get your pet to somewhere safe, get in touch and we'll try to help you find suitable accommodation for them. Planning for an emergency isn't just a good idea for cats, dogs, and other indoor pets - don't forget to consider outside pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs or tortoises as well. LOCAL BUZZ

Time to recognise North West Hampshire's 10,000 unpaid carers

Basingstoke named as top tech town Basingstoke is proving once more that it’s punching above its weight when it comes to the digital sector, being named as among the top UK locations for investment in growing technology companies. The town has been named as the fourth best place for such investment, behind only London, Cambridge and Abingdon, with total deals worth £425 million between 2015 and 2018. The league table was published as part a report by Tech Nation, the UK network for technology entrepreneurs. It is based on the number of scale-up companies in each area and the value of investments made into these companies. Scale-up companies are those which have at least 10 employees and which are growing, with employment or revenue growth of at least 20% for two years. The Tech Nation report also identifies Basingstoke as level with Prague, Strasbourg and San Jose when it comes to cyber investment. It follows on from the 2018 Tech Nation report that ranked the town as fourth for digital tech density, fifth for digital tech productivity and seventh for digital tech turnover in the UK. Cabinet Member for Borough Development and Improvement at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Cllr Rebecca Bean said: “This report proves yet again that Basingstoke is thriving when it comes to the digital sector. “We’re in the top five UK locations for scale-up tech investment, outperforming towns and cities many times our size across the globe. “We have a vibrant and growing tech community, including our incubation hub for high-tech start-ups delivered through the SET squared Partnership, which is truly something the town can be proud of. This is a great place to build and grow a tech company.”

I recently met Carers UK, the people behind the annual Carers Week which recognises the vital contribution made by people caring unpaid for someone living with an illness, disability, mental health condition or old age. I learnt that in North West Hampshire we have more than 9,994 unpaid carers which is roughly equal to one in ten of our local population. Across the country there are an estimated 8.8 million unpaid carers. These people are doing a heroic job for their family, friends and neighbours – yet many suffer from loneliness and isolation. In North West Hampshire a huge number of unpaid carers, 3,892 in total, are in full time employment whilst also juggling caring responsibilities on top of making a living.

It’s down to all of us to support the carers in our community – government, local authorities and employers. That could mean setting up micro networks in our towns and villages so they can talk, socialise, and make friendships with fellow carers or it could involve employers supporting their staff with caring responsibilities through carer-friendly perks. And this government must do its bit because unpaid carers are doing society a great service and saving our pressured health and social care services vast sums of money in the long run. Gateway to Newbury I spent a rainy morning at Newbury Station last month looking at ways to improve the state of the station and its surroundings. After much pushing, Network Rail has started to up its game on tackling litter and maintaining its green spaces but there is still much to do on general upkeep and dealing with empty advertising hoardings and unused buildings.

As demolition starts on the new Market Street development, an investment of over £50 million which will revitalise the southern end of our town, the station’s role as the gateway to Newbury becomes even more important. Our transport connections in West Berkshire are vital to the local economy and it was exciting to be present on the platform with a group of equally excited children from Great Bedwyn School as one of the first of the new bi-mode Intercity Express Trains came into the station. I campaigned for these trains because their design ensures that through services from Bedwyn to London can continue post electrification, instead of passengers having to change in Newbury from a diesel-powered shuttle on to an electric intercity. The last of the old High-Speed trains went out of service last month and it’s now all electric from Newbury to London which means bigger, more frequent and more environmentally friendly services.

Samaritans is a charity working across the UK and Ireland with the aim to reduce the number of people taking their own lives and to provide emotional support to people who are struggling to cope.

Every 90 minutes someone in the UK or Ireland dies by suicide.

We work with companies to develop mutual-beneficial partnerships, inspire their staff to gain great publicity, create healthier workplaces and allow us to continue our life-saving work.

Samaritans answer a call for help. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 and the biggest killer of young people aged 20-34.

non-judgemental emotional support for everyone, whatever they are going through.

There is no equality in suicide either, for if you are less well-off and male you are 10 times more likely to die by suicide than more well-off men. As many as 1 in 5 of us has thought about not being here anymore.

We work in communities, prisons, schools, hospitals, at festivals and with partners to support people.

Our 20,000 volunteers are here day and night, 365 days a year, offering

Whatever you are facing in life, you don’t have to face it alone. Samaritans provide a “Safe Place” where callers can feel free to talk to someone who will not only hear you but will listen.

Samaritans is for anyone struggling to cope with life’s challenges.

We give people the skills to look after their mental and emotional wellbeing, to help prevent them from reaching a crisis point, and the skills to be there for others. Taco Taco is a traditional Mexican dish composed of a corn or wheat tortilla folded or rolled around a filling. Taco can be made with a variety of fillings, including beef, chicken, seafood, vegetables, and cheese, allowing for great versatility and variety. It is often accompanied by garnishes such as salsa, cilantro, tomatoes, onions and lettuce.

Cheese is likewise considered to be the invention of French people

ine

Fondue Savoyarde Fondue Savoyarde is one of the most famous dishes from the Savoie region, which lies at the heart of the French Alps and is home to many of France's most fashionable ski resorts. The secret to the perfect fondue is to use highquality grated cheese for melting. For the bread, choose artisan bread, such as a good-quality sourdough. The chewier the bread, the better, as it will hold the melted cheese more successfully than a cheaper baguette.

FOOD Wolrd

Around the Food is something powerful that can trigger many memories associated to a specific time and place. Thus, part of the fun of visiting another country or city is getting to know their local dishes.

Feijoada Feijoada is one of the most popular Brazilian dishes you can find in every corner of the country. It’s a pot of black beans cooked with chunks of meat, although the truly traditional feijoada with pig’s ears, trotters and other parts. It’s served with fried kale mixed with bacon bits, rice, farofa (fried manioc One of the flour which works so well to absorb must-try foods those last bits of bean sauce) and a in Spain slice of orange to add flavour.

Pastel de Nata The Portuguese have had a lasting effect on the culinary world. Their greatest gift to the world, however, has to be the creation of the pastel de nata. If you haven’t already tried one, is a sweet made from puff pastry and egg custard. The recipe originates from Lisbon, but you can find them in just about every "pastelaria" in Portugal.

Sushi Sushi is, a without doubt, one of the most famous foods to come from Japan. A dish that was born in ancient times, sushi originated from the process of preserving fish in fermented rice. Today it’s made with vinegared rice and fresh fish, presented in a number of ways and shapes.

Churros In Spain, food traditions run deep. In Madrid, churros are basically fried dough twisted into a thin oval shape. They contain only flour, water, salt, and are served with a cup of thick, rich chocolate to dip them in.They’re one of the few foods served as street food in Spain.

Research in human nutrition over the past four decades has led to many discoveries as well as a comprehensive understanding of the exact mechanisms behind how food nutrients affect our bodies. Yet, dietrelated chronic diseases continue to increase worldwide. Why hasn’t all this intricate knowledge translated into improvements in public health? Perhaps it has to do with our entire philosophy of nutrition called reductionism, where everything is broken down into its constituent parts, where food is reduced to a collection of single compounds with supposed single effects. The historical attitude of the field of nutrition has long been: eat whatever you want as long as you get your vitamins and minerals. This mindset is epitomized by breakfast cereals, which often provide double-digit vitamins and minerals. But the road to health is not paved with Coke plus vitamins and minerals. If food is good only for a few nutrients, then you can get away with selling vitamin-fortified Twinkies.Bringing things down to their molecular components works for drug development, for example, discovering all the vitamins and curing deficiency diseases. In the field of nutrition, however, we discovered all the vitamins more than a half-century ago. When is the last time you heard of someone coming down with scurvy, pellagra, or kwashiorkor, the classic deficiency syndromes? What about the diseases of dietary excess: heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension? Ever heard of anyone with any of those? Of course we have. Yet we continue to have this deficiency mindset when it comes to nutrition. The same deficiency mindset led to the emergence of a multibilliondollar supplement industry. We need to shift from the concept of merely getting adequate nutrition to getting optimal nutrition. That is, we shouldn’t just aim to avoid scurvy, but we should promote health and minimize our risk of developing degenerative diseases by eating a variety of whole, vitamin-filled plant foods.

The dawn of a new era Since Newbury Racecourse held its first race in 1905, it has become established as one of Britain’s leading tracks. With up to 30 days of top-class Jump and Flat racing annually, the course offers something for everyone.

As a stage for some of the best racing in the country, it has come to be regarded as one of the fairest courses in the country. The racecourse was built after local trainer John Porter identified the land, located next to the Great Western Railway, as being ideal for a racecourse. He obtained an option to purchase before presenting his proposal to the Jockey Club. Initially turned down, he was given a second chance when he shared his plans with King Edward VII whose influence got Porter another interview with the stewards who eventually approved his plans. During World War I Newbury was used as a prisoner of war camp, a hay dispersal centre, a munitions inspection depot and a tank testing and repair park. Racing continued for a time in difficult circumstances during World War II despite several areas being requisitioned but then ceased after the 18

summer of 1941 when it became a base for the US army for whom it was a major supply depot. This took up the entire racecourse while at the same time the stables were occupied by prisoners of war. The track was not released from these commitments until 1947 and a huge clear-up exercise was needed before the course was fit to be used as a racecourse again which included a massive re-turfing programme which enabled racing to resume in 1949. The effort was led by Geoffrey Freer, who like John Porter, has a race named after him in recognition of his role. The highlight of Newbury’s Jump season is the £250,000 Ladbrokes Trophy, a handicap chase over an extended three and a quarter mile run in late November or early December. The race was known as the Hennessy Gold Cup until 2016 when the drinks brand brought an end to racing’s longest commercial sponsorship after the 60th running. Always a glamorous day out with high fashion on show as well as a celebrity or two. Peggy Hennessy, a member of the sponsoring company’s family, owned the first dual winner of the race Mandarin, a feat achieved only twice more by two of the all-time greats of racing. Arkle won the race in 1964 and 1965 while Denman matched him with

victories in 2007 and 2009. Both horses won under top weight each time. The race is generally considered one of the early trials for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, with nine winners of the Ladbrokes Trophy going on to win the big race in March. Many Clouds is the only horse to win both the Hennessy and the Grand National. In February of each year, Newbury hosts Betfair Super Saturday which includes the most valuable handicap hurdle run in Britain, the Betfair Hurdle. The meeting also features the Game Spirit and Denman Chases which have been won by the likes of Altior, Sprinter Sacre, Denman, Coneygree and Native River. On the flat, the highlight of Newbury’s summer season is the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes in May, a Group 1 race staged over a straight mile worth an impressive £350,000. First staged in 1958 as a high-quality mile race and open to three-year-olds, the first running was won by Pall Mall, who was owned by regular Newbury visitor, Her Majesty the Queen and went on to win the 2,000 Guineas. Her Majesty has had no less than 67 winners at the Berkshire course since her first win in 1958. The Lockinge earned Group 2 status when the Pattern was created in 1971 and was raised to Group 1 level in 1995 at which point it was closed to three-year-olds. Raised to Group 1 status in 1955, notable winners include

pre-parade ring offer state of the art facilities for the horses while a relandscaped parade ring and winner’s enclosure provides racegoers with an enhanced and improved view of the action.

the great Brigadier Gerard in 1972 and Hawk Wing who landed the race by 11 lengths in 2003 but, neither are remembered as fondly as Frankel who began his three and four-year-old seasons at Newbury. During an unbeaten career, Frankel raced at Newbury twice, winning the Greenham Stakes, the leading Classic trial, by four lengths in 2011 and the following year landing the Lockinge by five lengths. The racecourse is also a thriving events venue, hosting a huge range of activities including weddings, concerts, and conferences for 20 to 1,000 attendees

for a wide spectrum of businesses and organisations in stunning surroundings. In addition, it runs a successful private nursery, providing a safe, happy and stimulating learning environment for many preschool children. Over the last three years, Newbury has been undergoing a ÂŁ20-million 'heartspace' redevelopment, which is now almost complete.

Additional seating areas and new bars including, the Many Clouds champagne pod are well worth a visit with the new Stables Bar coming in the summer and offering a more relaxed space for racegoers to enjoy the action overlooking the parade ring. The new Owners Club facility is one big enhancement for the course and received positively by both owners and trainers since it opened in November 2017. A fantastic lawn terrace and large balcony on the first floor offering a panoramic view over both the preparade ring and paddock plus a 200seat restaurant and large bar area all contribute to the experience.

Be it equine or human, the course has been reshaped with everyone in mind. A new stabling and reformed

Friendship Day International Friendship day is celebrated annually on 30th July since 2011. It was created in the hope that the fostering of friendship between different people, cultures and countries would inspire peace throughout the world. Friendship Day is also celebrated around the world to mark the special bond between friends and to strengthen the power of their friendship.

History Although it was originally founded by the greeting card industry, probably as a marketing tool to sell more greeting cards, it has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity over the last few years. Today, many people celebrate this holiday by exchanging gifts, cards, wrist bands and flowers, or by merely sending their friends an instant or text message expressing their affection for them. The creation of Friendship Day has been attributed to the founder of Hallmark Cards, Joyce Hall sometime during the 1920s. During this time period, it was aggressively marketed, not only by Hallmark but also by many members of the National Greeting Card Association, but this marketing plan didn’t pan out too well with

consumers because many of them viewed the day as an obvious gimmick to sell more greeting cards. As a result, the popularity of the holiday and the cards associated with it, began to decline during the thirties. This continued up until the 1940s, when the holiday just about became extinct. However, whilst the popularity of this holiday was on the decline in the United States, it began to gain popularity in Europe and Asia. It is particularly popular in Asia and many people consider its popularity there the reason why this holiday stayed alive.

Now this day is celebrated by millions of people worldwide, which is pretty unbelievable considering that at one point in time it was about to die out completely.

In 2011, The General Assembly of the United Nations declared July 30th as International Friendship Day. Although that day was officially earmarked for the holiday, many countries – particularly in Europe and Asia – choose to celebrate the day on the first Sunday of August.

Windsor Castle offers something for everyone and with so many areas to explore please allow at least 2.5 to 3 hours to see it all.

Basingstoke is notorious for the problems of hard water. Limescale in the kettle, showers, toilets, taps is a constant source of irritation requiring endless cleaning and the use of harsh chemicals. Unfortunately we can’t clean the limescale off the heat exchangers in the washing machine, dishwasher and boiler. Limescale increases fuel consumption and shortens the life of these appliances

(We’ve all seen the Calgon ads)

It’s not just limescale, soap scum, sticky surfaces, and tide marks are all hallmarks of hard water. It can also dry skin and aggravate conditions like eczema and psoriasis. A good water softener can eliminate every one of these problems giving you beautiful soft water for showering and bathing, leaving skin soft and hair silky. There is one local, family business who has

dedicated the last thirty years to improving the quality of water in the area. The reviews from customers say everything as they are driven by a passion for customer service and the desire to improve everyone’s quality of water.

acres (and he didn’t even play golf). The house became the childhood home of his son, Regency style icon “Beau” Brummell (1778-1840), the man who revolutionised fashion and is credited with introducing the suit and necktie to menswear. The house and grounds then passed through the hands of three different owners until it was requisitioned by Allied Supplies Ltd. during World War Two. Post-war, the estate was sold to the cousin of Winston Churchill, the Hon. Reginald Fellowes, although his wife Daisy Fellowes (1890-1962) will be a resident more familiar to most.

The original owner was James Pettit Andrews (1737-1797), a noted British Historian and translator whose major work was “A History of Great Britain”.

With ornate battlements, pillars and statues it was expensive both to build and maintain.

It was Andrews who had Donnington Grove designed and

Making Tax Digital for VAT Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a HMRC initiative designed to make sure the UK tax system is effective, efficient and easier for taxpayers through the implementation of a fully digitalised tax system by 2020. MTD for VAT was implemented from 1st April 2019 and requires VAT registered businesses with taxable turnover above the VAT registration threshold of £85,000 to keep records in digital form and file their VAT returns using compatible software. The exception to this is a small minority of VAT registered businesses with more complex requirements, such as VAT groups. HMRC has delayed mandation for these businesses by six months to 1st October 2019. All businesses who fall into one of the small minority categories should have received a letter from HMRC

42

confirming their MTD implementation date has been deferred to 1st October 2019.Businesses within scope of MTD will need to acquire a suitable commercial software product or appoint an agent to submit returns to HMRC on their behalf. HMRC has a list of approved software providers on its website. All businesses who need to comply with MTD must ‘sign up’ before they can submit VAT

returns via their compatible software. You can sign up for MTD via the gov. uk website. HMRC’s online VAT return will remain available only to businesses that are voluntarily registered for VAT.
