Newbury in Bloom
The Community Safety team in Basingstoke and Deane has joined forces with the teams in Hart and Rushmoor and other partnership agencies to form Safer North Hampshire. The teams have been working together since November 2012 to better tackle crime and antisocial behaviour. Safer North Hampshire seeks to pool resources, powers and expertise to provide a complete response to community needs, whilst raising the understanding of community safety issues and improving the quality of life for local people.
The Newbury in Bloom Working Group runs an annual campaign to promote environmental improvements across the town. Our aim is to make Newbury an inviting place for people to live, work and visit.
For further information about Safer North Hampshire and to contact the team, visit the Safer North Hampshire website.
The Group helps to support community projects, bringing people together and encouraging them to make their pocket of the town a more attractive area with planting and floral displays. Issues Homelessness
Reviewing and planning to prevent homelessness in West Berkshire. West Berkshire Council adopted a new Homelessness Strategy in 2013 and in line with the national agenda it focuses on early intervention and prevention. Although West Berkshire Council provides strategic leadership tackling homelessness, it is not the Council's responsibility alone. Many different services and organisations contribute towards preventing it. Our Homelessness Strategy recognises this and takes account of the most effective and efficient ways that we can work together with our partners to provide joined-up ways 12
to help. After reviewing housing need assessing the likely impact of the government's welfare reforms and consulting widely with stakeholders, the Homelessness Strategy identified five priorities. These are: Continue to work to 1 prevent homelessness and sustain tenancies
Manage the negative 2 impacts of welfare and housing reforms
Make best use of the district's 3 housing stock
Improve the life chances of 4 homeless people Proactively work with our 5 partners to provide a
coordinated approach to tackling and preventing homelessness
There's a detailed Action Plan that supports the Homelessness Strategy and identifies specific projects or actions that will help to prevent and to tackle the causes of homelessness online please for more information access www.info.westberks.gov.uk/ article/28840.

Roads, crime and high streets top priorities in North West Hampshire Thank you for taking your time to fill in my constituency poll. I’ve had nearly 500 responses and it shows that while delivering the right Brexit is no doubt an immediate priority for us nationally, we also need to focus on keeping up the delivery of good services and facilities locally. Improving our roads and transport tops the poll with 73% saying it is one of your main priorities, followed by cutting crime such as drug offences and burglaries, and reviving our High Streets and local businesses.
Thanks to the festival’s new partnership with Without Walls, local audiences will be able to see dip, a new show from trampolinist extraordinaire Max Calaf Sevé. There will also be visits from Mufti Games’ One Kid and their Dog and The Virtual Orchestra, lots of 1980s nostalgia and the return of the hugely popular Dance Flashmob. Do nothing for Nature Last month Plantlife, the conservation charity of which I am a trustee, initiated ‘No Mow May’, encouraging people to leave their grass uncut for the month and then over the second May Bank Holiday weekend to take part in ‘Every Flower Counts’ to see how many daisies, dandelions, buttercups and other wild flowers have sprung up. If you fed the results into the Plantlife website you received your very own Personal Nectar Score showing how many bees your lawn can support.
I can report that in the last year we have resurfaced 20,738 potholes across the county and we plan to do even more in the next 12 months. I recently met with the local Police & Crime Commissioner It’s good to see West Berkshire Council taking this seriously too.
Headliners Sister Bliss and Top Loader have already been announced, in addition to Utah Saints and SK Shlomo’s incredible Beatbox Adventure for Kids. There's lots more to come and don't forget that under 12 years old are free with an accompanying adult. The rest of Basingstoke Festival 2019 promises to be a fantastic fortnight packed full of street theatre, comedy, music, art and much more.

Over last winter it had a good look at the best way of managing our district’s grass verges and protecting the flora, fauna and insects that inhabit them. While some verges have to be cut back for safety, for example in the sightlines at busy junctions, others have the potential to become precious linear nature reserves. Look out for progress on the Council’s new wildflower verges along the A4, one near Halfway and one between Ufton and Aldermaston. These will be prepared and sown over this spring and summer with, hopefully, colourful and environmentally friendly results next spring.

Prior’s Court is a centre of excellence which transforms the lives of young people aged 5-25 from across the UK with severe autism. Based on a 50-acre site in Hermitage, we have 16 residential homes, a school, young adult provision, on-site therapy teams, countryside learning centre, horticultural centre, swimming pool, gym, sensory room, theatre and commercial bakery. We also have a training and development centre where we train parents and autism professionals from around the world. In addition to their primary diagnosis of autism, most of our young people have co-existing conditions such as learning difficulties, sensory processing disorder, mental health issues and epilepsy. Almost all are non-verbal. These complex needs and difficulties communicating
14
mean that they often display challenging behaviours towards themselves and others. For our young people life is extremely challenging and many of them reach us in crisis. The stress on their families is immense. The heart-breaking realisation is that for their safety and that of their families they can no longer stay in the family home. For this reason, most of our young people live at Prior’s Court 52 weeks of the year, where we support them 24/7. By putting in place resources and routine, using schedules and clear visual prompts within a specialist environment, our young people are guided through the day in a positive and structured environment. The world becomes more predictable and more meaningful. As a result, sleep and diet improve, communication progresses, and challenging behaviours are reduced. Over time, our young people begin to cope better and become happier, so that they are they can go on to lead fulfilling lives beyond Prior’s Court, achieving beyond all expectations.
If you’re looking to partner with a local charity, please consider Prior’s Court Foundation. We have an exciting range of projects for which we are looking for support whether it be financial or pro-bono. We also have a fantastic year-round volunteering programme and can accommodate large teams up to 50 people. Alternatively, if you’d like to take on an offsite teambuilding challenge we can help with that too. Contact fundraising@priorscourt.org.uk or 01635 247202.

Are Happier People Actually Healthier? Positive states may be associated with less stress, less inflammation and more resilience to infection. But positive wellbeing may also be accompanied by a healthy lifestyle that itself reduces the risk of disease.
sick. So, whose immune system fights better? In one-third of the bummedout folks came down with a cold. But only about one in five got a cold in the happy group. Could it be that those with positive emotions slept better got more exercise, or had lower stress? No. It appears that even after controlling for the healthy practices and levels of stress hormones, happier people still appear to have healthier immune systems and a greater resistance to developing the common cold.
Happy people tend to smoke less, exercise more, drink less alcohol and sleep better. So, maybe happiness leads to health only indirectly. The apparent protective effect of positive psychological well-being, however, persists even after controlling for all these Dr. Michael Greger healthy behaviours. M.D. FACLM This means that even at the same level of smoking, drinking, exercising and sleeping happier people still seem to live longer. A study published in 2003 “hypothesized that people who typically report experiencing negative emotions are at greater risk for disease and those who typically report positive emotions are at less risk.” Researchers tested this using the common cold virus. Three hundred and thirty-four healthy volunteers were assessed for how happy, pleased and relaxed they were or how anxious, hostile and depressed. They were then given nasal drops containing cold rhinoviruses to see who would be more likely to come down with the cold. Thanks to our immunes system just because you get exposed to a virus doesn’t mean you automatically get
It also works with the flu. When researchers repeated the study with the flu virus increased positive emotions were associated with decreased verified illness rates just like in their earlier study on colds. These results indicate that feeling vigorous, calm and happy may play a more important role in health than previously thought.
BAKED ONION RINGS Adapted from The How Not to Die Cookbook Makes: 4 Servings (5 onion rings per serving) • Difficult: Moderate Onion rings were a favourite of mine growing up, but I thankfully (and heartfully) gave up my taste for those greasy, oily, deep-fried, fatty monstrosities. The onion rings in this recipe come out pretty close to perfection.
Local Buzz is delighted to welcome Dr. Michael Greger, a physician, author and professional speaker on public health issues to share his blogs in every issue. He focuses on the best available balance of evidence from the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
1 cup almond milk (see below) 1 teaspoon rice vinegar 1 cup cornmeal ¾ cup 100% whole-grain salt-free bread crumbs 1 cup nutritional yeast 2 tablespoons no-salt seasoning 1 teaspoon smoked paprika Method
1 Preheat the oven to 425ºF. Line a
large baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper and set aside. Separate the onion slices into rings. Transfer to a bowl and set aside. Make the almond milk by blending 1 tablespoon smooth, raw almond butter with 1 cup of water.
2 In a shallow bowl combine the oat
flour, chickpea flour, almond milk and vinegar stirring to blend well.
3 In a separate shallow bowl
combine the cornmeal, bread crumbs, nutritional yeast, Savory Spice Blend and paprika mixing well.
4 In a row, line up the bowls of
onion rings, batter and breading mixture and the prepared baking sheet. Dip an onion ring into the batter coating it all over. Transfer the onion ring to the breading tossing to coat.
5 Use a clean dry hand to sprinkle
the breading onto the onion as needed. Place the coated onion ring on the prepared baking sheet and repeat with the remaining ingredients arranging the rings in a single layer. Use a second baking sheet if needed. You should have enough batter and breading for about twenty onion rings.
6 Bake for 10 minutes; then remove from the oven and carefully turn over the rings. Bake for about 10 minutes longer or until crisp and nicely browned. Serve hot.

Fishing Month
Celebrate National Fishing Month Fishing is well-known for its capacity to help you to relax into a new, fascinating world, the ideal antidote to the stresses and strains of modern life – a way to avoid the constant barrage of political opinions and the disappointing performance of our national football team. It transports you to the heart of nature and the many intriguing plants and animals that live there. By attending a National Fishing Month event this summer, you could experience the joys of fishing yourself. A great way to enjoy yourself this summer, go outdoors and become healthy is to take part in one of the 250 National Fishing Month (NFM) events across the UK. You will be joining thousands of young people, parents, grandparents and friends who enjoy quality family time together at the waterside over the holiday period. It’s
a hugely satisfying way to strengthen relationships and become active together, and it often leads to lasting hobby and a passion for angling. There are many exciting events across the UK planned for the first weekend of National Fishing Month. One such showcase event is being held at the Sportfish Game Fishing Centre at Theale in Reading on Friday 22nd July. With a customised day full of hands-on angling opportunities, the event focus is on youngsters and newcomers and falls in line with the core ethos of NFM. There will be tutored fishing on the lake, oneto-one advice from some of the biggest names in the sport, and demonstrations throughout the day that will illustrate just how easy it is to get started.
Fish
& Chips
A Brief History of Fish and Chips No one knows precisely where or when fish and chips came together. Chips had arrived in Britain from France in the eighteenth century and were known as pommes frites. The first mention of chips was in 1854 when a leading chef included thin cut potatoes cooked in oil in his recipe book Shilling Cookery. Around this time, fish warehouses sold fried fish and bread with mention of this in Charles Dickens’ novel Oliver Twist published in 1830.
Fish and chips gained popularity when the meal helped feed the masses during the First World War. Since fish and potatoes were two of only a few foods not rationed in WWII, the traditional dish maintained its status. Today there are about 11,000 fish and chips shops throughout the UK and Ireland, so finding a chippie (a fish and chip shop) is usually easy. Fish and chip shops are now also around the world, including a few shops in New York City, and are especially popular in coastal regions of Spain.
The Origin of the Chippies There are claims that the first chippies were from Lancashire and London. No matter who may have opened the first fish and chip shop, the trade grew to feed a rapidly expanding population, reaching a staggering 35,000 shops in the 1930s and more than tripling since then.
The Best Ingredients for Fish and Chips Great fish and chips are only as good as its ingredients. The U.K.’s favourite fish is still cod and accounts for more than half of the total consumption. Haddock is the second favorite, and there are regional variations include whiting in Northern Ireland and some parts of Scotland, as well as skate and huss in the south of England. When it comes to the chip, a floury potato is best and waxy potatoes can often result in greasy chips. Thick-cut potato absorbs less oil than a thin cut so the chunkier chips are the healthier ones. The perfect and traditional fat for frying both the fish and the chips is beef drippings or lard. Both give a crisper and tastier chip and fish batter. However, cooking fish and chips in vegetable or corn oil is now commonplace as it is healthier and more readily available. The oil must be clean and maintained at a constant temperature of 365 F (185 C) for the crispiest fish and chips.
Traditional Accompaniments The classic condiment for fish and chips is vinegar with a sprinkle of salt. Love or hate them, mushy peas are also traditional on the side. In addition, since the mid-seventies, a curry sauce has also become popular. The other sauces considered suitable are a splash of ketchup or in Scotland a brown
sauce. Although a continental habit of serving mayonnaise with fish and chips has emerged, very few Britons have adopted this.
The Ultimate Takeaway Dish Despite the threat from pizza and burgers, fish and chips remain the nation’s favourite takeaway dish, nearly four times more popular than Indian curries. Traditionally, fish and chips were wrapped in greaseproof paper and a thick layer of newspaper which served not only as an insulator but also as a plate to make eating outdoors easier. Due to health and safety control chippies are no longer allowed to use paper anymore. Many fish and chip purists, though, declare fish and chips eaten from newspaper outdoors is the only and best way to eat them.
Fat and Calories Although deep-fried fish and chips are not considered a healthy meal, it is better for you than other fast food options. Fish and chips have less fat and calories than the average pizza, as well as a Big Mac or Whopper meal with medium fries.

Scones
This is a drink that has always had a place in the hearts of the British. It’s also a very easy drink to make and is, therefore, perfect for bringing along for a great British picnic.
A little treat should always be your starting point. The highlight is always the scones traditionally served with a tray of clotted cream and strawberry jam.
Traditional British picnic finger food The starting point here has to be the three classic, sausage rolls, scotch eggs and pork pies. You willl be hard pressed to walk down a British high street and not find a baker's shop offering these savory treats to an array of happy customers. All three are as good cold as they are hot, but if you want to add a little fire to these snacks, then add a dollop of English mustard on the side.
Chicken A staple of many picnics is chicken, as it is a meat that is just as good cold as it is hot, so for a British picnic what better-flavored chicken could you ask for than one made for a Queen. Coronation Chicken a concoction invented for Queen Elizabeth II’s crowning ceremony.
Cheese and Crackers Britain might not be as famous for its cheese as some other countries, but some of the classics are produced here. Cheddar cheese and stilton are two that instantly spring to mind, and with a little research, you willl find that Britain does make many great types of cheese.
ine
FOOD Picnic
With the arrival of lovely weather, British picnic is one of life’s greatest pleasures.
Strawberries and Cream If you have ever watch Wimbledon on TV, you will know the British love for strawberries and cream. And why not? It is a very simple and tasty dessert. You do not have to overcomplicate dessert. Many people leave this course out of a picnic because of this fear, but something as simple as strawberries and cream will receive great reception.
Picturesque hilltops, lakes, rivers, parks, forests and beaches, there is no shortage of places to plan a tradition British picnic. With great weather and amazing location, all you need now is the right British food and drinks, a checkered blanket and vintage picnic basket. Quiche This one is a bit controversial, as quiche is a French dish (although Crustade, an open-faced pastry with meat filled custards, have been around in Britain a lot longer. They just were not called Quiche). So, even though quiche is a French dish, British people enjoy them at parties and picnics like it is their own, and have been for hundreds of years.
Jam Tarts Just as British people love making jams, they love jam tarts. You might equate jam tarts to the children’s story Alice in Wonderland. But in Britain, jam tarts were serious business. All the top chefs would put their reputations on the line vying for prizes in church baking competitions. Jam tarts had a status symbol attached to them back in the day, due to the cost of sugar being so expensive. Fortunately, things have changed, and jam tarts are now easy, cheap and extremely tasty. Perfect for a British picnic dessert.

The Tinners Rabbits
Stewart Hofgartner of Below Stairs of Hungerford Antiques has been an antiques dealer for over 40 years. Stewart’s collecting habit and growing expertise inspired him to take first one then eventually five units at Hungerford Arcade. After a couple of years the success of his trade necessitated his own premises and he moved across the road to start the aptly named Below Stairs antique business. Life at Below Stairs is very busy for Stewart. He has a popular website and is even busier in the shop. Customers browse the thousands of items online and then come in to buy in person or buy online. He also has his own onsite workshop at Below Stairs to do minor repairs, polishing, re-wiring and lacquering in order to present every item perfectly. Stewart is also a perfectionist in his attire and is a very distinctive person around Hungerford with his own sartorial style. “I buy mainly privately and people often invite me to look at things in their houses. I often arrive to find I’ve
already missed several skips and wish they had called me earlier. Things that make money are often everyday things from the past. They don’t always look valuable so please get advice before you throw anything away. “I’m happy to give anyone a valuation on something I know about – otherwise I will direct people to another expert. You need to find the right person to give you an opinion.”
For 16 years now Stewart has been a regular dealer on ITV’s Dickinson’s Real Deal where members of the public bring along items for dealers to bid on.
“We dealers don’t know what we are going to be offered so I can’t do any research and have to think on my toes. I have a production team of nine with me and we make four programmes per day. It’s one of the more realistic antique shows on telly and it’s good for
my profile. For instance a lot of Warners Hotel guests like to watch Dickinson’s Real Deal in the afternoon and look me up when they stay at Littlecote. After they’ve met me once, they come back with the items they want to sell and then they go on to explore Hungerford.” In terms of trends in antiques, Stewart is noticing that shabby-chic, re-painted retro furniture and industrial lighting are on the way out and ‘brown furniture’ is on the up again and is probably finding its true value. He has plenty of first-time house buyers and newly weds wanting the classic furniture. If you have any items you would like to have valued by Stewart Hofgartner please contact him at Below Stairs on Hungerford High Street.

Children
safety week
This years’ Child Safety Week runs from Monday 3rd June to Sunday 9th June 2019. The theme is Family life today: where’s the risk? It highlights the new dangers facing families today from our modern lifestyles and offers simple solutions to keep children safe.
New dangers in the home include things like button batteries that can kill when swallowed, washing capsules that can poison or nappy sacks stored under cot mattresses that can suffocate babies. Dangers when out and about include distraction from devices when we are driving or walking near busy roads. The coffee culture trend that sees young children at risk from hot drink scalds in busy coffee shops
Family life today is more complex than it has ever been and often the things that help make life more convenient bring new risks.
and the loss of pedestrian education for children and families. Child Safety Week 2019 aims to cut through the noise and offer families and practitioners working with families some simple answers to today's accident risks. To really make the most of Child Safety Week, now is a good time to start thinking about where it fits into your plans for the year colleagues and partners you may need to engage.
Incorporate 5 changes into their daily lives
1
Anticipate problems – many accidents happen when parents are taken by surprise by the next stage of their child’s development, whether that's a baby grabbing their mug of coffee or a small child copying what they do.
2
Build confidence – some parents may lack confidence in their ability to change things. You can help to build their sense of control, so they realise that they can identify problems and then make choices that help keep their children safety.
3
Identify goal – ask families to be specific about the changes they are going to make. Then help them to plan and visualise what they will do thinking through when they can do it, how long it will take and any barries that might get in the way.
4
Keep it small and simple – keeping a child safe from serious accidents can seem overwhelming and demotivating for some parents. So breaking the issue down into manageable context in a conversation will help parents feel empowered to make changes.
5
Repetition leads to habits – small changes repeated often enough become automatic habits and this is a really important point to emphasise to parents who already feel under pressure. If families get into habits such as shutting the safety gate each time or always using the five point harness on the high chair. 35

Fat her's Day On Father's Day, many people make a special effort to visit their father. They often take or send cards and gifts. Common Father's Day gifts are ties, socks, underwear, sweaters, slippers and other items of clothing. Other people give tools for household maintenance or garden work, luxury food items or drinks. Many Father's Day gifts have slogans such as "The World's Best Dad", "For My Father" or just a simple "Dad" on them. The increase in print-on-demand services offered by photo processing companies has made personalized gifts even more popular for Father's Day. Photographs of children can be printed on desk calendars, mugs, T-shirts, mouse mats, bags and even ties.
Many fathers are expected to take these to the office to remind them of their families while they are working. In the days and weeks before Father's Day, many schools and children's organizations help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or gift for their father.
Other families organize a special meal at home or in a pub or restaurant. A common Father's Day meal is a traditional roast dinner with meat, stuffing, potatoes and vegetables which can be eaten in a pub and accompanied by pints of ale or lager.
Mothers and other family members may help children to make personalized gifts, such as calendars with drawings made by the children. Popular Father's Day experiences include driving a fire engine, rally car, tank or even airplane or taking a golf, football or cricket lesson with a celebrity coach.
Celebrate Father's Day by planning an outing or weekend trip. This may be a simple walk in the countryside or a whole planned "experience".

Is there a cure? Unfortunately, there is no cure for MND at the moment. People with the disease do not get better and, in time, will die from MND. While there is no cure, there is support available. This can help the person with MND feel more comfortable and do things for themselves for as long as possible. Support can vary, but might include: • treatment and therapy • medicines to help manage symptoms • equipment and aids
What is MND? Motor neurone disease (MND) describes a group of diseases that affect the nerves (motor neurones) in the brain and spinal cord that tell your muscles what to do. Select from the following for basic facts about the disease.
What causes MND? Nobody knows exactly what causes MND, but lots of research is going on to find out. Scientists think several things may need to happen for someone to get MND. Genes can play a part in this. Genes are little codes in our cells that make up who we are. Sometimes genes are different to the way they should be and cause unexpected things to happen, but we don’t always know why genes have changed. However, it is thought that other triggers are also needed for MND to begin. These may be things in the environment around us and can be

first signs might be dropping things or tripping up when walking.
Are there different types of MND?
PBP affects about a quarter of people diagnosed
Each type affects people in different ways, but they cause similar symptoms. Over time, the way people move, speak, eat, drink or breathe may change. Not everyone has the same symptoms or in the same order, so it’s difficult to say what will happen next. The four main types of MND are: • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) This is the most common form of MND. People with ALS often start with weakness in their arms and legs. The
• Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP)
with MND. In the early stages, people may notice their speech starts to slur or they have difficulty swallowing. • Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA) PMA affects a smaller number of people with MND. At first, people tend to notice weakness or clumsiness in their hands. • Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) This is a rare form of MND causing mainly weakness in the legs, may also have speech problems. PLS is the slowest form of MND, which means the symptoms take longer to get worse.

Is your advertising working? Advertising a small business is too expensive to do haphazardly. If you’re going to invest money into either print, radio, TV, or online advertising you need see a return on your investment. Unfortunately, many business owners don't know how to evaluate the success or failure of their ads. Ask them how well their advertising is working, and the best some owners can say is that they "think" their advertisements are working well, they don't know which ads are working well, or they don't know if any are working. Don't fall into this trap. To make the money you spend on ads pay off, you need to measure and evaluate your ad spend based on data.
The Problem Although there’s a lot of science involved in advertising, there’s also a lot of art. Many factors are hard to measure. For example, if somebody sees your ad, comes to your store and doesn’t buy anything, that builds brand awareness. They may come back later when they need what you sell. In that case, your advertising worked—just not immediately. There are plenty of situations where advertising is hard to measure but that doesn’t mean you should give up trying. The fact is, most advertising is measurable if you design your campaign correctly.
Before You Advertise. . . To measure the effectiveness of your advert, you need baseline data. What was your store or website traffic before you ran the ad? How were your sales? Did sales increase for the products or services you advertised? You will only know if you have past data.

BuzzConnect
Effective networking If you have come along to one of our events, you will have noticed the warm and welcoming approach that we take. We encourage everyone to get involved and promote what they do. BuzzConnect was created to bring people together and we believe that there should be no exclusions, no long-term contracts and no “performance pressure” such as speaking to the room and giving a 2-minute introduction about your company. Our monthly networking at Metro Bank is hugely popular and will always be free. However, our evening events have a small charge which covers our immediate costs with proceeds going towards our chosen charity. This year we have partnered with Colostomy UK. We look forward to welcoming you to our events this year, contact us if you have any questions. BuzzConnect Business networking is evolving, and it will continue to grow for years to come. Make sure you join the BuzzConnect Networking Group on Facebook, so you can share your company information for free and be part of a thriving business community.
