REMORTGAGING MYTHS DEBUNKED
According to figures released by UK Finance (formerly known as the Council of Mortgage Lenders), more people are remortgaging than ever before, with 36,800 UK homeowners making the move in July alone – its highest level since 2009. For most people, their mortgage is their biggest financial commitment. It’s no wonder many are cautious when looking to stick or switch lender. This can make the process feel daunting. However, it doesn’t have to be. In fact, remortgaging has fast become a way in which many of us are not only saving money, but also releasing equity and negotiating mortgage terms to fit with change in personal circumstance. While remortgaging isn’t compulsory, by switching to a lower rate you could save hundreds of pounds a month. Let’s take a look at an example. If your property is valued at £300,000 and you have a mortgage of £200,000 with a term of 25 years on a capital and interest basis, if you remortgage to 3.0% instead of 4.2%, you could save around £130 a month £1560 a year. So, is remortgaging for you? We’ve debunked some of the most common myths to help you make the right decision: 1.
2.
“It’s too much hassle and I won’t see much of a saving” - Remortgaging can actually save you money. Just like looking for a new electricity supplier, by shopping around and switching lenders you could lower your monthly repayments, leaving you with cash to spend on other important things. “Remortgaging is a last resort when I’m out of borrowing options” - People don’t just remortgage their homes to raise capital; remortgaging can actually help you find a more secure deal or flexible payment plan. For example, if you currently have a variable rate product and worry about increasing interest rates, then remortgaging to a fixed rate may offer the financial stability you need.
3.
“I won’t bother as my terms will stay the same” - Actually, you could get better mortgage terms if you decide to remortgage. When you first take out a mortgage there may have been a reason why you were offered a more expensive product. If your financial circumstances improve, remortgaging could result in lower rates of interest and therefore, lower monthly payments.
4.
“I won’t see any other benefits” - Remortgaging will actually give you access to further equity. If your property has increased in value, or your mortgage has reduced, you could release some of the equity by remortgaging. You may want to carry out home improvements to increase the value of your property before you sell or raise capital for another purpose.
Whatever the reason, a standard remortgage can be completed simply, meaning you could start benefitting from your new mortgage sooner than you thought. Newbury Building Society is experienced in remortgaging and our expert team is on-hand to answer any questions you may have. Contact us today and make an appointment.

Thatcham Church It is believed that a place of worship was erected on the site of St. Mary's church during the 7th century AD. This would have been a wooden structure and was replaced with a small Norman stone church in the 12th century, essentially the core, or nave, of what can be seen today and measured 66 feet by 21 feet. At this time the church was presented to Reading Abbey. This was gradually extended with a chancel in the 13th century followed by the lower half of the church tower in the 14th century. It is believed bells were first added in the 16th century. In the 1850s the entire church was renovated with most parts such as the Danvers Chapel being covered in flint. The church was also known for a period as St. Luke’s and indeed there is a carving of St. Luke on the pulpit. However it is commonly believed it was originally known as St Mary’s and by the early 1880s it had reverted to back to St Mary’s. The Church has many of Thatcham's residents buried in it including Francis Baily who had been offered burial at Westminster Abbey. Police Advice
Drug Driving It is against the law to drive under the influence of illegal drugs, or if you have certain drugs above a specified level in your blood. Similar to drink driving, the police have a roadside test that makes it easier to detect those who are driving under the influence of illegal drugs. Officers can test for cannabis and cocaine at the roadside, and screen for other drugs, including ecstasy, LSD, ketamine and heroin at the police station. Even drivers that pass the roadside check can be arrested if the police suspect that your driving is impaired by drugs.
The consequences The penalties for drug driving are the same as for drink driving. If you are convicted you could face:
Job loss
A minimum 12-month driving ban
Loss of independence
A criminal record
An unlimited fine
The shame of having a criminal record
Up to 6 months in prison
Increase in car insurance costs
An endorsement on your driving license for 11 years
Trouble getting in to countries like the USA

To the memory of the fallen and the future of the living The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support for the Armed Forces community - serving men and women, veterans, and their families.
I
n the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write a now famous poem called 'In Flanders Fields'. After the First World War, the poppy was adopted as a symbol of Remembrance. The Legion is committed to helping everyone understand the importance of Remembrance so that sacrifices are never forgotten. The Legion advocates a specific type of Remembrance connected to the British Armed Forces, those who were killed, those who fought with them and alongside them. During the Poppy Appeal, The Royal British Legion will once again be encouraging people to rethink what Remembrance means. The poppy
2017 marks 100 years since the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium. Also known as the Third Battle of Ypres, it was one of the most significant clashes of the First World War and became infamous for the 60,083 British deaths and the torrential rain, which lead to horrific conditions and a quagmire of mud.
and the work of the Legion are often associated with the First and Second World Wars and elderly veterans, however we’re calling on the public to reconsider what the poppy stands for and wear it in support of the Armed Forces Community, past and present. The Armed Forces community is widely dispersed in the general population and the Legion’s support for them happens in unexpected ways and in unexpected places so we will be asking the public to think of the many ways the Legion uses their donations to support the Armed Forces community when they’re wearing their poppy. Remembrance Sunday, which falls on 12 November in 2017, is a day for the nation to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.
The poppy is. . . A symbol of Remembrance and hope

The Passchendaele Pin Every pin tells a tale
Private John Sutherland was only 23 years old when he fought and died at the Battle of Passchendaele 100 years ago. To commemorate the ultimate sacrifice Private Sutherland and other British soldiers made, The Royal British Legion have produced a very special limited edition poppy pin, made using melted down brass fuses from British shells fired during the battle and found at the various sites where the Battle of Passchendaele took place. The enamel paint used on the pins has also been mixed with soil from the British front line, ensuring each and every pin is unique and contains its own little piece of history. Designed by TMB Art Metal to pay tribute to each one of the fallen British soldiers from Passchendaele, the pins come in a
lacquered wooden presentation box with a Commemorative Certificate detailing an individual British solider whose life was lost during the 103 days battle. The pins also come with added feel good fact thanks to the fact that all
profits raised from their sale go directly to The Royal British Legion and their important work providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces, past and present, and their families.
Order your unique pin and Every Man Remembered certificate for £39.99 (plus p&p £3.99) from poppyshop.org.uk/everypin (you can also see how these remarkable pins were made) or phone us on 0300 123 9110 Cover Image - The lapel pin has no printed effect and is a solid gold/yellow tone with a red centre and green leaf.

In the UK speeding is still a major problem. It causes needless crashes, untold suffering and stops people living safe and healthy lives.
A few facts on why our theme is important: l Breaking the speed limit or travelling too fast for conditions is recorded by police at crash scenes as a contributory factor in one in four (23%) fatal crashes in great Britain [1].
D
riving is unpredictable and if something unexpected happens on the road ahead – such as a child stepping out from between parked cars – it is a driver’s speed that will determine whether they can stop in time and, if they can’t stop, how hard they will hit. Yet newer vehicles are more powerful than ever before and reach high speeds quickly. Driving fast is glamorised and often encouraged by programmes and adverts that worship the cult of the car. We all live busy lives and there is a temptation to speed up in the hope of saving time, where in fact we could be costing lives.
We are encouraging everyone to Speed Down Save Lives for Road Safety Week 2017 (20-26 November). 16
We can all play our part in raising awareness about the dangers of driving too fast and this year's campaign will focus on:
Speed causes deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
Rural roads are not race tracks.
20mph is the only safe speed in heavily built-up areas used by pedestrians and cyclists.
going slow = stopping in time.
Speed is scary and noisy. It stops communities being enjoyable places for children and families to walk, talk and play.
Speed cameras work, they save lives.
Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) is an important development that is likely to be fitted to all vehicles in the future.
l Drivers with one speeding violation annually are twice as likely to crash as those with none [2]. l A recent Brake survey found that four in 10 (40%) UK drivers admitted they sometimes drive at 30mph in 20mph zones [3].

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY
Y
ou might imagine a 2.0-litre diesel would struggle in a car as big and heavy as the Discovery, but the entrylevel level engine (badged SD4) delivers surprisingly adequate performance. True, there is a bit of a pause between you pushing the accelerator and the car surging forward, but once into its stride, speed builds steadily enough. The 3.0-litre V6 diesel (called the TD6) isn’t ultimately that much faster, but it pulls harder at low revs and delivers its power more smoothly. We reckon it well worth the relatively small price premium, even though it still doesn’t delivery the sort of hot hatch-rivalling acceleration you’d get from, say, an Audi Q7. There’s also a 3.0-litre V6 petrol (Si6).
Comfort The standard air suspension delivers a suitably smooth ride. The Discovery is particularly comfortable at motorway speeds when it wafts over undulations like a jumbo jet running into very mild turbulence, but even broken town surfaces don’t cause any discomfort.
Handling The Discovery is very much geared towards comfort rather than sporty handling. You can steer the car
of arm work. The Discovery isn’t the ideal town car, then, but it is among the best off-roaders in the world. It’ll breeze over terrain that its rivals couldn’t even dream of trying to tackle, thanks to a classleading ground clearance of 283mm, a wading depth of 900mm (also best in class) and a multitude of clever electronics.
The Land Rover Discovery is hugely capable and very desirable, equally at home both on-road and off. through corners with confidence at reasonable speeds without feeling as though you’re about to tip over, although it never feels as eager to change direction as a Volvo XC90 and leans more when it does. The steering is slow, so getting around tight corners requires plenty
All Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) is available as part of the Capability Pack (optional on all trims apart from entry-level S). It's effectively cruise control for off-roading and works at speeds of up to 19mph.
Refinement You barely hear a peep from the 2.0-litre diesel engine at a steady cruise, although the smaller motor is a bit vocal when you’re accelerating hard. The 3.0-litre diesel offers even more serenity, and none of the engine options transmit many vibrations through the steering wheel or the soles of your feet.
Visibility Lots of glass and a lofty driving position combine to give you a great view out in all directions. Forward visibility is particularly good, so it’s surprisingly easy to thread the Discovery along narrow urban streets or between tight hedgerows. 21

As its Men's health month, I want to urge any men, particularly 50+ suffering from chronic and persistent lower back pain, as well as deep abdominal pain and a pulsation feeling near the naval, to visit their GP. These are signs of an Abdominal Aneurysm, which is a condition I regularly refer patients for!
Is your back pain something more serious? Every day I have to reassure my patients, that the death sentence they have diagnosed themselves with (having googled their symptoms) is actually something as minor as a muscle spasm. But when are your symptoms considered more serious? Musculo-skeletal pain that is a secondary symptom of disease, is in fact, rare. If they do get secondary back pain, by that point, the person is usually aware of the disease. However that is not always the case.

Passion fruit
In the UK we eat more Passion fruits are round or oval. They Brussels sprouts can be yellow, red, purple and green. than anyone else The fruit is round and about 3 inches in Europe. long and has a thick, waxy rind that becomes wrinkly as the fruit ripens. Inside passion fruit are sacs that are filled with orange-colored juice and small, crunchy seeds. This juice mixture is known as pulp. It is low in fat and is an outstanding source of dietary fibre.
Satsumas
Brussels sprouts
The satsuma is of Chinese origin, but was introduced to the West via Japan. They are grown in humid areas and may be ripe while the skin is still green. It is one of the sweetest citrus varieties, with a meltingly tender texture and usually seedless. one of the distinguishing features of the satsuma is the thin, leathery skin dotted with large and prominent oil glands, which is lightly attached around the fruit, enabling it to be peeled very easily in comparison to other citrus fruits.
Long relegated to the Christmas table, Brussels sprouts have a dreadful reputation. Like miniature versions of the common cabbage, they grow on large stalks and have a sweet, nutty flavour, which some people can find too pungent. But, treated with a touch of love and care, these little buds can become a firm winter favourite.
Fine
Chestnuts Unlike other nuts, chestnuts have a high starch and water content but low protein and fat levels. Chestnuts are available fresh, ground, dried, purĂŠed or vacuumpacked. Dried chestnuts lend a smoky flavour and robustness of character to soups or stews.
Chestnuts are used in pastry and cakes
Goose Scallops An expensive but delicious shellfish with a delicate taste, available in a range of sizes. Scallops have two fanshaped shells which contain rounds of firm white flesh, sometimes with the edible cream and orange coral (or roe) attached.
Parsnips A sweetly flavoured root vegetable native to Britain, parsnips resemble a bulky, beige carrot. They’re usually treated in much the same way as the potato: roasted, mashed, or made into chips or crisps. FOOD & DRINK
People used to believe (falsely) that eating parsnips could relieve a toothache.
Usually it is found in europe, North America and Asia. The goose was domesticated since Roman times in europe. goose meat provides ample amounts of nutrients, minerals, lipids and amino acids which assist in numerous health benefits.
Rabbit Rabbit meat is considered to be a very important source of protein, especially as it contains less fat percentage. It also contains a high proportion of calcium which is an important element in bones and teeth formation .

What is it about great wines and great rivers? of course vines, like any other plants, require sunlight and water, but is there something else? Take a look at France and its three great wine regions of Bordeaux, Loire valley and the Rhone. In Bordeaux the River garonne splits the vineyards of Medoc and St emilion. The Loire begins with Muscadet and ends with Sancerre and the mighty Rhone kicks of with Cote Rotie and ends 100s of miles further south after passing Chateau Neuf du Pape. In germany the River Rhine creates the great Riesling vineyards and its tributaries Mosel, Ahr and Saar are filled with hidden gems of tiny wine producers. In Portugal the river Douro has created its very own category of fortified wine – Port. Marlborough in New Zealand is flanked by two great rivers, Wairau and Awatere, and my favourite Australian wines come from Margaret River south of Perth in Western Australia. The reasons for this close relationship stretch beyond the need for water. The steep banks provide for extra sun, but also importantly wine is often the only crop that could grow there. The plains are best kept for grains, as the sturdy vines can grow on very harsh ground thanks to its deep root structure. And finally let’s not forget commerce and transport. From medieval times until now barrels of port and claret have been sailed down the rivers and out to sea to quench the thirst of us in Britain!

In 1605, thirteen young men planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Among them was Guy Fawkes, Britain's most notorious traitor.
Guy Fawkes Britain's most notorious traitor
A
fter Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, English Catholics who had been persecuted under her rule had hoped that her successor, James I, would be more tolerant of their religion. James I had, after all, had a Catholic mother. Unfortunately, James did not turn out to be more tolerant than Elizabeth and a number of young men, 13 to be exact, decided that violent action was the answer. A small group took shape, under the leadership of Robert Catesby. Catesby felt that violent action was warranted. Indeed, the thing to do was to blow up the Houses of Parliament. In doing so, they would kill the King, maybe even the Prince of Wales, and the Members of Parliament who were making life difficult for the Catholics.
It's unclear if the conspirators would ever have been able to pull off their plan to blow up the Parliament even if they had not been betrayed. Some have suggested that the gunpowder itself was so old as to be useless. Since guy Fawkes and the other conspirators got caught before trying to ignite the powder, we'll never know for certain.
To carry out their plan, the conspirators got hold of 36 barrels of gunpowder - and stored them in a cellar, just under the House of Lords. But as the group worked on the plot, it became clear that innocent people would be hurt or killed in the attack, including some people who even fought for more rights for Catholics. Some of the plotters started having second thoughts. one of the group members even sent an anonymous letter warning his friend, Lord Monteagle, to stay away from the Parliament on November 5th. The warning letter reached the King, and the King's forces made plans to stop the conspirators.
even for the period which was notoriously unstable, the gunpowder Plot struck a very profound chord for the people of england. In fact, even today, the reigning monarch only enters the Parliament once a year, on what is called “the State opening of Parliament”. Prior to the opening, and according to custom, the Yeomen of the guard search the cellars of the Palace of Westminster. Nowadays, the Queen and Parliament still observe this tradition.
guy Fawkes, who was in the cellar of the parliament with the 36 barrels of gunpowder when the authorities stormed it in the early hours of November 5th, was caught, tortured and executed.
on the very night that the gunpowder Plot was foiled, on November 5th, 1605, bonfires were
Firework Code 1. Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable. 2. Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time. 3. Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks. 6. Never return to a firework once it has been lit. 7. Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators. 8. Make sure that the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.
set alight to celebrate the safety of the King. Since then, November 5th has become known as Bonfire Night. Soon, people began placing effigies onto bonfires, and fireworks were added to the celebrations. effigies of guy Fawkes, and sometimes those of the Pope, graced the pyres. Still today, some communities throw dummies of both guy Fawkes and the Pope on the bonfire (and even those of a contemporary politician or two), although the gesture is seen by most as a quirky tradition, rather than an expression of hostility towards the Pope. Preparations for Bonfire Night celebrations include making a dummy of guy Fawkes, which is called “the guy”. on the night itself, guy is placed on top of the bonfire, which is then set alight; and fireworks displays fill the sky. The extent of the celebrations and the size of the bonfire varies from one community to the next. Bonfire Night is not only celebrated in Britain. The tradition crossed the oceans and established itself in the British colonies during the centuries. It was actively celebrated in New england as "Pope Day" as late as the 18th century. Today, November 5th bonfires still light up in far out places like New Zealand and Newfoundland in Canada.

25th November - 3rd December
National Tree Week November 25th marks the start of National Tree Week, which in turn marks the start of tree-planting season.
C
onsidering that most of us in the UK have fairly small plots we do love our trees. The trouble is we’re not always terribly good at choosing them. How many times have you driven through a housing estate and observed an enormous weeping willow or an enormous pine tree completely obscuring a front garden.
and bursts into fiery colour. If you only have room for one tree then an Amelanchier won’t let you down.
Sorbus hupehensis var. obtusa Another hard worker is Sorbus hupehensis var. obtusa. This tree has a pretty shape and is attractive throughout the year. In the late spring it is covered in white blossom which is followed by masses of dark pink berries. The blue-green leaves turn red in the autumn.
It can be tricky deciding what sort of tree to plant on a small, suburban plot but there are plenty of candidates. Generally, trees up to 8-10m are considered suitable.
It’s just my opinion of course but without at least one tree, a garden can seem flat and a little dull. Trees provide structure and height but are also a haven for birds and insects, which in turn add colour and life. Why not plant a tree during this week. Our guide has some helpful tips.
The best urban trees offer year-round interest.
Acer Palmatum Varieties of Acer Palmatum (right) are rather lovely. They are elegant trees which have attractive green or purple foliage and colour beautifully in the winter.
Amalanchier Lamarckii For my money Amalanchier Lamarckii is about as hardworking a tree as you’ll come across. During March and April it produces a frothy show of white flowers, then in June these are replaced by attractive deep purple, and supposedly edible - though I’ve never tried them - fruits. Then, when Autumn arrives the tree pulls out all the stops
Oaks produce more than 2,000 acorns every year, but only one in 10,000 acorns will manage to develop into oak tree. 40
How to Plant a Tree
1 2
Dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball.
Make up a mixture of half compost and half soil from the hole. Put a few inches of this mix at the bottom of the hole.
3
Trees need support so drive a support stake into the hole at one edge. This needs to be done before the tree is planted or you risk damaging the roots.
4
Tip the tree from its container and loosen the roots a little. Place it into the hole and fill in with the soil and compost mixture. Firm it down with your heel.
5
Use proper straps to secure the tree to the post and water well.
The Local Sound of Newbury and Thatcham
Based in our studio in Broadway House, we are currently broadcasting to Newbury and Thatcham – and to the world! – via our website and smartphone apps, 24/7.
The exciting news is that after a lot of hard work, the Kennet Radio team has won a coveted community radio licence to broadcast to Newbury and Thatcham on 106.7 FM as well. We are nearly there with the fundraising to buy our transmitter, so we should be on air by the summer.
We are not-for-profit, unlike our commercial counterparts or the BBC, and we are dependent on grants and donations as well as some advertising. Our low power transmitter means our coverage FM is very local.
Advertise with us! By broadcasting only to Newbury and Thatcham, the cost of advertising on Kennet Radio is a lot less than you might think. That means you can advertise your local business to a local audience, knowing that you’re not paying to advertise to listeners who are miles away. Kennet Radio only exists thanks to the dedication and commitment of its volunteers. Whatever your interest, we’d love to hear from you visit bit.ly/KRvolunteer online, fill in the volunteer form on our website, and we’ll be in touch.
