HOW THE BANK OF MUM AND DAD CAN HELP THEIR CHILDREN BECOME FIRST TIME BUYERS
Research undertaken by Legal and General*, in association with CEBR the economics consultancy, indicates that in 2017 the Bank of Mum and Dad will become the UK’s 9th biggest lender to first time buyers. The report highlights this is due to a number of factors; including rising house prices, slow wage growth and the size of deposits required in more expensive housing regions. And, geographically, parents in the South West of England on average contribute the most per transaction, even more than in London. So, in which ways can you help your child (or grandchild) buy their first home? 1.
2.
3.
By gifted deposit – family members can gift a deposit sum which will help towards their child’s or grandchild’s property purchase. In the South West, without a sizeable deposit you are unable to buy a property with a mortgage. Help with providing a larger deposit, will both give your child the opportunity to buy and potentially lower the cost of the interest rate that will be payable. Additional borrowing on the family home – providing you own your own home, being retired or of older age does not mean you are not able to release equity from your property. If you do not have savings to gift, or your savings are tied into investments, you could possibly take out a mortgage on your home and gift the funds to your children to help them towards buying a home. Joint mortgage – sole ownership - If you, as parents, are employed or retired your income could be used towards obtaining a mortgage jointly with your child. This could potentially increase your child’s purchasing power and enable them to get onto the property ladder. You would be jointly named on the mortgage, however the ownership of the property would remain in the name of your child, this would mean you would not be liable for second home stamp duty costs.
4.
Help to Buy and Shared Ownership – there are also government schemes which offer the opportunity to purchase a share in a new build or resale property. The Shared Ownership scheme is a cross between buying and renting, and allows the purchaser to buy a share in a property, usually between 25% and 75% of the purchase price, and then pay rent on the remaining share. In these schemes, the deposit can be a lot lower than would be required when purchasing outright, therefore the help required with the deposit would be less.
Before you make any decisions, it’s always advisable to seek independent advice. Helping your child may seem like the right thing to do, but do ensure that it is affordable for you and that any agreements entered into are clear to all parties involved. If you would like to talk to us about mortgages please contact us and arrange an appointment in a branch local to you or by telephone. We are known for providing a tailored and individual service and our qualified mortgage advisers are also available for appointments on Saturdays.

Chamberhouse Castle Do you know that there was once a castle a short distance away from the town centre? Chamberhouse was once part of the Crookham Estate. It is commonly thought the name is derived from the 13th century owner, Roger de la Chambre. The estate became the property of Sir John Pury in 1445 and in the same year is the first mention of the “Manor of Chamberhouse”, albeit a sub-manor of Crookham. Pury was granted a royal license to embattle and crenellate the manor. He did so adding a moat too. In addition over 300 acres of land were turned into a park. Thus the estate became known as Chamberhouse Castle. The deer park became disused after 100 years and the manor house, or rather castle, stood until the 18th century when it was demolished. A new building(s) was erected and can be seen at Chamberhouse today via the bridle path that passes through the estate.

6 Decades of
Come and see me at Salisbury City Hall 19th October All About The Music Tour celebrates six decades in the music industry how do you keep the magic alive? Six decades is amazing! You know the weird thing is I have to say “It's really been that long?” They say time passes really fast when you are having fun and I could apply that to me. It's happened without me even blinking because this is what I live for, I live for music. It's a blessing in my life. How do you keep the shows exciting for you and the audience? First of all I’ve only been with this band for around 4 years and that’s helped shake things up. They’re all younger than me, so there's a young energy which I love. We keep it fresh and new and the great thing is these guys are influenced by the same music that I was and still am but they have a new slant. You were one of or the first female artist to play an Eastern bloc country in 1966 what was the experience like, considering you were only 17 or 18. I was with The Hollies and it was scary. It was cold, the place was very run down and there were bullet marks on buildings. There was debris and there was a lot of poverty. It was also
memorable because when we did the concerts there were guards all around watching the audience, so they didn't stand up or get excited. When they started to get excited the guards slapped them down. Do you think today’s young female bands and artists are under too much pressure to look good? YES. Now it's world domination or nothing, and that is tremendous pressure - and you'll be dropped like a hot potato if you don't sell a certain amount of records. It was different back then. Do you listen to new music artists? Yes I do. I know a lot of people my age sit around and listen to old music but that's not what I do. I listen to lots of stuff, old and new. The new Lady Gaga record is great, I love Zayn Malik, Adele, Rihanna, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Sigma - and I think Beyoncé has done something that no other black female has done. She is a consummate entertainer. I just get so excited by so many artists. I also love Paolo Nutini Paolo is the real deal; he's a real blues singer. I also think Calvin Harris is doing the most unbelievable work. There is so much I enjoy.
“I thought I was going to be a singing hairdresser who never left Glasgow!”
In your experience, what gets easier as you get older? Most things become easier because I live from a position of having gratitude. I've become philosophical, and as tough as it is for me not to kneejerk into a negative place when things go wrong, I always have a way of getting back and looking at acceptance of what is and what I can't change. It doesn’t happen in a flash; it’s a process, and I now have the support and the tools to process. And what gets tougher? Maintenance. It’s a bitch…ha-ha! There's a big piece of acceptance in growing older. I look at myself and go 'oh my God’. You never really thought this would happen. When you have success at a young age, the pop star sort of thing, you think you’re invincible, so it’s a shock to see that you are not. If someone had told your 15 year-old self you would have this life ahead of you what would you have thought? I would have said are you having a laugh, because I have had such an amazing life! How could a young 15 year-old have predicted the way my life was going unfold? It has been a roller coaster…I thought I was going to be a singing hairdresser who never left Glasgow!

Medlars
Apple
Medlars are a hardy fruit that look like a cross between a small apple and a rosehip. When ripe, they’re hard and green. They’re picked at this stage, but aren’t edible until they’ve become half rotten or ‘bletted’, when they turn brown and soft. Harvested medlars are stored in sawdust or bran in a cool, dark place until they’re suitably bletted and have developed an aromatic flavour.
Crumbles became popular in Britain during World War II, when the crumble topping was an economical alternative to pies due to shortages of pastry ingredients as the result of rationing. To further reduce the use of rationed flour, fat and sugar, breadcrumbs or oatmeal could be added to the crumble mix.
Sloe Sloes (Blackthorn) are very small, green-fleshed, inky-skinned, wild plums with an acid flesh and bitter skin. They’re commonly found in hedgerows and make a fabulous jam.
Fine
Food
Kale Kale is descended from the same ancestor as cabbage. It was originally known as 'cole' or 'colewort' in England but now most people call it by its Scottish name, kale. It's hardy, surviving harsh winters and growing where cabbage often can't (leading to the name 'Hungry Gap' for one variety). Both kale and winter cabbages such as cavolo nero (black cabbage) go well with partridge, pheasant, guinea fowl and duck. They're also great in minestrone soup and hearty stews.
Wild mushrooms
Venison Venison is the name given to any of the species of deer sold as meat. The lean, red meat is low in fat and full of flavour and has become popular and widely available. Deer can be classified as wild deer, park deer (reared in herds that roam parklands) or farmed deer (rearing varies from freerange to intensive). The most common varieties of deer are red, fallow and roe.
Wild mushroom varieties abound, but most commonly you will encounter chanterelles, porcini (or ceps), horn-of-plenty (trompette de la mort), fairy ring, chicken of the woods, hedgehog, puffballs, morels and if you're really lucky, the odd truffle.
Sea bass A superb sweet, white, textured fish, sea bass is a popular feature of menus. It is caught in the North Atlantic, from Norway to Senegal. It closely resembles sea bream in flavour.
Pumpkin Not just used for Halloween, the pumpkin makes a delicious soup or pie. Alternatively stir meltingly sweet cubes of fried pumpkin into risottos or curries, offsetting the sweetness with fragrant herbs such as sage or thyme, or warming spices such as ginger.
Chorizo potato cakes with fried sea bass Nobody can offer Indian food like we can!
When writing recipes, we try to come up with interesting dishes that everyone would like to eat and that are easy to cook, without getting into difficulties. We think this recipe works well on both counts.

Chocolate may be the “food of the gods,” but for most of its 4,000-year history, it was actually consumed as a bitter beverage rather than as a sweet edible treat.
chocolate n e v a e H chocolate week 9 - 15th october
T
he ancient Mesoamericans who first cultivated cacao plants found in the tropical rainforests of Central America fermented, roasted and ground the cacao beans into a paste that they mixed with water, vanilla, honey, chili peppers and other spices to brew a frothy chocolate drink. In the 1500s, Spanish conquistadors such as Hernán Cortés who sought gold and silver in Mexico returned instead with chocolate. Although the Spanish sweetened the bitter drink with cane sugar and cinnamon, one thing remained unchanged: chocolate was still a delectable symbol of luxury, wealth and power. Chocolate was sipped by royal lips, and only Spanish elites could afford the expensive import.
In 1824 John Cadbury opened a grocer's shop in Birmingham. Among other products he sold cocoa and drinking chocolate.
Spain managed to keep chocolate a savory secret for nearly a century, but when the daughter of Spanish King Philip III wed French King Louis XIII in 1615, she brought her love of chocolate with her to France. The popularity of chocolate quickly spread to other European courts, and aristocrats consumed it as a magic elixir with salubrious benefits.
pulverized into a fine powder that could be mixed with liquids and other ingredients, poured into molds and solidified into edible, easily digestible chocolate. The innovation by van Houten ushered in the modern era of chocolate by enabling it to be used as a confectionary ingredient, and the resulting drop in production costs made chocolate affordable to the masses..
Chocolate remained an aristocratic nectar until Dutch chemist Coenraad Johannes van Houten in 1828 invented the cocoa press, which revolutionized chocolate-making. The cocoa press could squeeze the fatty cocoa butter from roasted cacao beans, leaving behind a dry cake that could be
In 1847 J.S. Fry & Sons created the first solid edible chocolate bar from cocoa butter, cocoa powder and sugar. The rest as they say is history!
Toblerone bars are very popular and if each year they were laid end to end, they would go on for 62,000km which is longer than the circumference of the Earth.
Choccy Facts
According to the International Cocoa Organization, Europeans account for almost half the world's chocolate consumption. They estimate the average Brit, Swiss, or German eat 11kg of chocolate a year.
In 1930 Ruth Wakefield realised she was out of baker's chocolate and mixed broken piece of Nestle chocolate into her cookie dough, expecting the chocolate to be absorbed and create chocolate cookies. Instead, she accidentally created chocolate chip cookies, and later sold the idea to Nestle in return for a lifetime supply of chocolate.

The UK & Ireland’s best sausage, the pinnacle of sausage making, will be revealed at Meat Trades Journal’s Champion of Champions award on Monday November 6 at London’s County Hall, the culmination of Big Sausage Week.
The Big Sausage Week Celebration Only the winners of regional sausage competitions across the country held between 1 July 2016 and 1 September 2017 are eligible to enter the prestigious event.

The best sausages in the nation will be tested by a panel of expert judges, where an ultimate Champion of Champions will be named. Last year’s winner was Andrew Rook of JC Rook and Sons in Kent, who took home the trophy with his Grandad’s Recipe Pork & Sage. Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of All Hallows' Evening) is a spooky celebration observed every year in many countries on October 31 - the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day, also known as All Saints' Day. In 2017, Halloween falls on a Tuesday.
Halloween Carve the Best Pumpkin The influx of Irish immigrants in the 1840s to North America could not find any turnips to carve, as was tradition, so they used the more readily available pumpkin into which they carved scary faces. By the 1920s pumpkin carving was widespread across America, and Halloween was a big holiday with dressing up and trick-or-treating.
Children love to carve pumpkins and over the years our designs have become more ambitious. Here are a few tips:
1
Start with the right pumpkin. It should be fresh with a sturdy stem, no bruises and a flat bottom so it won't roll. A smooth one is easier to carve and if you can find one with a flatter 'face' so much the better.
2 3
Use proper safety pumpkin carving sets.
Cut the lid using the saw angled in towards the stem. That way, the lid won't drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it.
4
Scoop out all the pulp and some of the flesh - an ice cream scoop works brilliantly.
5 competition Local Buzz is running an online competition to find the best pumpkin design. Post your carved pumpkin photo on Facebook and tag @localbuzzmags to enter the competition and the winner will be announced on the 31st Oct.
Happy Hal food & drink
loween!
You can now download patterns from the internet. These are terrific if you have limited artistic skills. Tape the pattern to the pumpkin (make little cuts around the edge of the pattern if the pumpkin is a bit too round, and that way it will fit better). Then use a pin or small nail to puncture the paper and the outer skin of the pumpkin at intervals of around 1/4 inch / 0.5 cm, or even closer for intricate designs.
6
If it's difficult to see your poked-out pattern, rub a little corn flour or baby powder into the dots. The dots will turn bright white and your design will magically appear.
7
Carve the tiniest sections first. Then carve the areas in the centre of the pattern, and then work outwards.
8
Rather than always cutting all the way through the pumpkin try just removing some of the skin. The yellow flesh underneath will glow when lit up from inside.
9
Spread Vaseline on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If you carve it a few days in advance and it shrivels you can revive it with a face-down soak in cold water. Pumpkin carving is a great activity for all the family. You can make it competitive or have a theme for your pumpkins, or invite friends over for a pumpkin carving party.

Extend the Life of Your Summer Wardrobe Not ready to say goodbye and stash your warm weather closet staples? As the temperature drops, keep your favourite items in the rotation with the help of a pair of tights. While tights themselves are relatively new, hosiery in general has been around for centuries. In the 9th century, they were fashioned out of bandages wrapped around the legs. Later on, in the 16th century handknitted stockings from Spain made their way to England.

You can find all these items at
Denier is the weight of the fabric. You can tell a lot about the tights by this number. Hosiery with a high denier number tend to be stronger, thicker, more opaque and more durable. When looking for a warm pair, choose one with a denier number of 40+. During the winter months a denier of 80-200 is an ideal range to keep your legs toasty.

So how do you pick the pair that's best for you? When choosing a pair of stockings or tights, there's a few different things to look for; colour, texture and opacity, but none are more important than the denier count.

In 1938, Dupont introduced Nylon stockings and by 1949 nylon covered legs sporting black. However, it wasn't until the 1950's that Aristoc designed tights, which were then perfected even more in 1968 by Pretty Polly.
Black tights are always an autumnal staple for me. However, hosiery is a great place to add a pop of colour to your look, as well. (Try a burgundy shade for a really trendy look!) I recommend pairing them with thin short skirts and cozy knits, layering them under sundresses or even wearing a thin pair under trousers on the coldest of days to stay both stylish and warm.
Want a more casual lace look? A structured jacket and a pair of ankle boots will do the trick!

Head-Turning Lace Popular for hundreds of years and used in everything from dollies to wedding gowns, lace has always had a place in our hearts and wardrobes. Whether lined or completely sheer, hand-stitched or machine made, this intricate fabric is always ideal.

To learn about lace from the pros, Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton and her team took a trip to the Shetland Isles to explore the landscape and observe the crofters, who have been making knitted wool lace shawls for hundreds of years. The result? Delicate long lace dresses paired with dark chokers and Use a single product to inject booties for a touch of attitude painted the runways at the a little youthful glow, like lead artist McQueen show. Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Tadashi Shoji, Jsong Way and Balenciaga also favoured the intricate fabric for dresses, tops and even shoes. However, it's Lisa N. Hoang and Louis Vuitton's lace jumpsuits and trousers which made everyone stop and take notice, bringing to view another side to this multifaceted material.
by Johannes Vermeer's iconic painting, Girl With a Pearl Earring, Pecheux put M.A.C.’s 'Into the Pink Blush' on triple-duty. Not only did he apply it across the models' cheekbones, but he also used it over the eyelids and lips for a soft girlish look that pairs well with the season's trendy darker shades.
Why do we love this trend? Not only is it soft and pretty, but it's also very unexpected for the cooler months. Plus, rather than touting around a whole makeup bag full of products, you can toss a single compact in your purse, leave it in your desk at work or throw it in your suitcase saving you room and cutting down on clutter! No matter if it's delicate and sweet, fierce or sheer and sexy, lace is always a show-stopper!
“. . . just because your perfect colour is a pinky beige, that doesn't mean you can't wear deep burgundy,” exclaims Bobbi Brown. While Brown is the cosmetic queen and referring to lipstick, it couldn't reign any truer for clothes. Crushing the catwalks at Altuzarra and Brock Collection, this majestic wine colour was front and center on coats, trousers, shoes and even purses. Details like fur collars, nods to traditional corsetry, cozy knits, luxes suedes and gold accents elevated the glamorous autumnal looks. Delpozo featured silhouettes inspired by the abstract rounded shapes of sculptor Max Bill's work in shades of burgundy and other dark hues. Josep Font, Delpozo's architecturally trained creative director, brought it up a notch with a sleek, matching embellished hood for a truly head-to-toe ensemble.
Shoulder Impingement One of the most common conditions of the shoulder that I treat, is an impingement and they can be a nightmare!
Mel Harrison
What is it? In our shoulder we have 4 key rotator cuff muscles that help to stabalise the joint, the most known being the supraspinatus as its the most likely to get injured! The tendons of these muscles can become irritated and inflammed when they pass through the sub acromial space (an area between 2 bony prominence's in the shoulder). Causes usually include repeated activities (particularly overhead), osteoarthrosis, weakness of the rotator cuff, anatomical abnormalities, neck problems, injury or poor physical condition. The pain is usually situated at the front of the shoulder joint but can extend into the outer aspect of the arm, it is usually dull but can be sharp on certain movements. Other symptoms include weakness, loss of shoulder mobility and is usually worse at night.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Almost nine in ten women survive breast cancer for five years or more.
and this year, Breast Cancer Care is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the pink ribbon, a powerful symbol for millions of people affected by the disease.
What is breast cancer? Breast cancer starts in the cells of the breast as a group of cancer cells that can then invade surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to other areas of the body.
Breast cancer signs and symptoms Knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can lead to diagnosing the cancer sooner. This can be crucial in providing more effective treatment and, ultimately, saving lives. But a Breast Cancer Care survey found a third (33%) of women aren’t regularly checking. A fifth (20%) say it’s because they don’t know how to check their breasts.
How should a breast self-exam be performed? In the Shower Using the pads of your fingers, move around your entire breast in a circular pattern moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Check both breasts each month feeling for any lump, thickening, or hardened knot.
In Front of a Mirror Visually inspect your breasts with your health & wellbeing
arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead. Look for any changes in the contour, any swelling, or dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Next, rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match - few women's breasts do, so look for any dimpling, puckering, or changes, particularly on one side. Lying Down When lying down, the breast tissue spreads out evenly along the chest wall. Place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit.Use light, medium, and firm pressure. Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast. Breast cancer doesn’t always mean a lump. Other less well known symptoms
Free Helpline 0808 800 6000 www.breastcancercare.org.uk
include a nipple becoming inverted or a change in texture of the skin.
Breast cancer and younger women Around 5,600 women aged 45 and under are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK. A Breast Cancer Care survey found just over half (53%) of younger women diagnosed with breast cancer have no discussion with healthcare professionals about fertility preservation options, which include freezing embryos or eggs.
Good news about Breast Cancer In recent years, perhaps coinciding with the decline in prescriptive hormone replacement therapy after menopause, we have seen a gradual reduction in female breast cancer incidence rates among women aged 50 and older. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options. If you are concerned about any adnormalities with your breasts contact your local doctors and make an appointment.

New figures show more than half of the children awaiting adoption in the South East are in sibling groups.
59% of the children in the South East waiting for adoptive families are brothers and sisters in groups of 2 or more according to new information published today to mark National Adoption Week (16-22nd October). Figures from national adoption information service, First4Adoption, based on the latest government information*, show that sibling groups wait longer than single children to be placed with a “forever family”. Chris Burton from First 4 Adoption says “The majority of people adopting for the first time choose to take a single child into their family. Also, it is often in the best interests of the children that a sibling group finds a family together rather than experience further trauma by being separated. This presents an extra challenge for social workers and these factors account for the high proportion of siblings in our region waiting for an adoptive family”.
First4Adoption is the national information service for adoption in England. Call 0300 222 0022, visit www.first4adoption.org.uk Follow us on Twitter and Facebook
The new research, by Adoption Match and based on data from the Adoption Register for England also reveals that : l 52%
of sibling groups awaiting adoption in the South East are children aged over 4. * Based on information from Adoption Match which operates the Adoption Register for England on behalf of the Department for Education www.adoptionmatch.org.uk
l 57%
of these groups awaiting adoption are made up of boys.
l 18%
of the siblings groups awaiting adoption are Black and Minority Ethnic children.
Chris Burton from First 4 Adoption adds, “We’re asking anyone who may be considering adoption to think about whether they could parent siblings. There’s no denying that having more than one child comes with real
challenges but it also has advantages and brings great rewards. If you’re interested in finding out more, please contact First 4 Adoption today.
Adoption Match is the national service working to match those children waiting to find permanent homes with those approved adopters waiting to be matched with children. Adoption Match manages the national statutory database of children and adopters, the Adoption Register for England, on behalf of the Department for Education.

Good or Bad?
This is not surprising when this year, Thames Water were fined by OFWAT £8 million for wasting 47 million litres of water per day! Then, a further £20 million fine for leaking raw sewage into the River Thames, no wonder their bills are high. This is further compounded by subsiding the building of London's new £4 billion sewage system (seen as a waste by some). Perhaps it's time we had a choice.
