A fun family event with a great atmosphere and lots to see, do and savour for people of all ages. CultureFest offers you a unique and diverse local community event at your door step, with £2 per adult entry; it is definitely a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Summer is here again so it’s any excuse to get outdoors for a BBQ or to make use of all the wonderful green space in the town and the countryside all around us. Thatcham Youth and the Town Council will be running their usual full programme of events to keep the youngsters busy. Thatcham has a great community spirit that gives the town a strong identity and is why so many people love to live here. Something I’m very excited about is our new community based website. Rather than just telling you about Thatcham Vision and the plan, although all that is there too, it is designed as a central resource of local information and for our teams of volunteers to publicise their great work, with more coming soon I hope. All this will be heavily publicised by our fantastic volunteer marketing team on social media. Thanks to Devzen for the development work and to DCLG for paying for it and for recognising the work Thatcham Vision does. So, if you are involved in a local organisation that struggles for resources then get in touch and we can offer you your own free webpage. New website launch 12th July st By David Conque

Thatcham Vision is calling for more volunteers to help with community projects. For more information www.thatchamvision.net and residents are encouraged to follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

EU Referendum By the time you read this update, the votes will have been cast for the EU Referendum. The West Berks Chamber did not campaign for either Remain or Leave given the very real divisions that existed in business communities across the UK. In the months leading up to the referendum, the Chamber sought to get clear information and facts from both the Remain and Leave campaigns so that business people could make an informed choice at the ballot box. We also delivered a number of well attended events where key stakeholders in the debate where able to brief a business audience. History of Air Experience Flights

We are an air-minded youth organisation for 12-20 year olds who have an interest in aviation, adventure and expanding their horizons.

Prior to the establishment of AEFs, cadet flying was a more ad-hoc affair, although during the 1940s and 1950s, Airspeed Oxfords and Avro Ansons were used specifically to fly cadets. On September 8, 1958 formal Air Experience Flights were established at 12 airbases across the UK. They were equipped with the De Havilland

This is our 75th year and we, as a squadron, have been around the entire period - somethng not often seen. We were one of the initial Air Training Corps units to be formed in 1941, after the conversion of all the previous organisation's units into squadrons. We parade twice a week on a Monday and Wednesday, from 7.00pm-9.30pm, and we do lots of our activities at weekends too. We have opportunities for flying, target rifle shooting, adventure training such as canoeing, kayaking, climbing and hill walking, camping, the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme, service engagement with the Armed Forces, academic training and qualifications, extra-mural trips to attractions like theme

We have been supporting the Newbury Mayor Making Ceremony for at least 14 years, if not longer. We spend a morning helping the community by setting up the ceremony with all the equipment, such as the mayor's chair and important items like silverware. Once completed, we safely store it in the town hall before heading to the reception venue and preparing for the hundred or so guests and dignitaries that will be attending. This allows us to mingle and speak with key local personnel who could benefit our squadron, gets us some publicity and ensures that we remain a part of the town's youth community. It helps promote young people and shows how disciplined, smart and capable we are. 20 years ago the Abshot Community Centre in Kelsey Close, Titchfield Common, was alive with singing, dancing and the cries of “it’s behind you!” The Abshot Entertainers performed regular amateur reviews and pantomimes on an old home made stage to audiences drawn from the local community. So what’s next? Please do follow us on Facebook Abshot Community Centre for our upcoming events.

Its ShowTime! Thanks to a community grant from Fareham Borough Council we have recently been able to purchase a modern, portable new stage which has motivated members of the association to restart their thespian and entertainment activities.

former professional, Brian Coshall; an impressionist who had previously appeared at the London Palladium and many other variety theatres in the UK and Australia. Brian was also a regular on television and radio in the 70s and 80s.

The first time it was used was at our May Family Fun day when Professor Harvo and his Punch and Judy, took centre stage, much to the delight of many happy children and their parents! We hope to see more Punch and Judy fans at our August Family Fun Day on the afternoon of Sunday 28th August. A free fun filled afternoon to which the public are invited to attend and enjoy the displays, stalls, sideshows and games that are on offer.

Amongst the amateur acts were James Whitehead, a local, talented guitarist, playing his first ever solo performance and also providing backing for other acts, he definitely lived up to his Mum's description, “The intergalactic rock star before he was famous!”

The next show was the Abshot Variety Performance, where the acts were primarily amateur and novice entertainers. They were supported by a

The performers from our local community included an 11 year old singer, Charlie Sewell, whose confidence, stage presence and singing ability showed a quality not often found in a performer so young, definitely a star of the future. Performances by the other talented, albeit more mature acts on stage, ranged from up to date covers of Adele

songs to well known tunes by Whitney Houston, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. The audience particularly enjoyed the Elton John and Kiki Dee duet by a pair who met through a local choir and performed as a duo together for the first time after only one real rehearsal. Sound, stage setting, lighting and furnishings were provided by volunteers from the association who used their skills and time to ensure that the show went ahead with the minimum hitches. The evening was a tremendous success, enjoyed by all those who attended and took part. The audience participation and enthusiasm was well received by the acts and most definitely helped to calm the nerves of the novices. The fact that there wasn't an empty seat in the centre was most notable and provides encouragement for the Abshot Community Centre to produce and deliver further entertainment in the future. Its ShowTime! Our stage is ready for the community. A huge thanks to Mark and Jo Collins from local family run business Making Interiors for supplying the fabric for the stage curtains and to Krissie Slatter for making them.

If you would be interested in hiring the stage it is available to be hired by the community. Please contact Abshot Community Centre on 01489 480023.

Where have you been? What’s been going on? Fran: In the last six weeks I’ve been in Mexico City, Texas, Paris, Tokyo, Berlin, London, Glasgow, Milan and now here. We’re just running around telling everyone we’ve got a record out! Do you like the running about? Fran: I do. Sometimes you’re putting an album out and it’s nice to know that people want to meet you and talk to you. And this has been a really interesting record because we hadn’t been played for a long time on the radio and I think that’s because we’d gone off to be dads. We were putting records out but we weren’t putting the ‘foot down’. Now the kids are 8,9, 10 years old we can really concentrate on getting out there. You scheduled dad time? Blokes do that? Fran: Before you have kids, people tell you that you’ll never get that time back with your kids and if you’re in a band, it’s not a normal job - you’re away for six months or so. So I think for us we were ‘nah, let’s be at home’ and we were lucky enough to be pretty successful so we could buy that time with our kids. A lot of (other) people buy gold racing cars and ridiculous, stupid things but I think it was money well spent. You’re credited for paving the way for the likes of Coldplay and Keane. That’s pretty amazing?

Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop are one half of Travis. They spoke to Lucy Ambache on The Evening Breeze and talked comebacks, making movies and why they might be responsible for Coldplay. going around at the time and it was very successful – and I think when something like that happens, the record industry go ‘let’s sign a bunch of this’ so for the next four years that was pretty much what you got. It wasn’t our intention but that’s what happens. A song like ‘Why Does It Always Rain On Me’. Do you still love it? Andy: We get to play it every night and people still go mad to it so it’s still our touching point. Fran: I like that song because it’s really easy to play – it’s super simple! When you’re playing songs in a gig, the more complicated chord structures and rhythms, and then you have to think about lyrics, they get in the way of enjoying the show. The simpler the song, the better - so I love it.

Andy: We invented Coldplay in a room.

Your new single ‘Magnificent Time’ is so ‘your sound’.

Fran: We constructed them out of foam and bits of wires – and gave them our cast-off songs (laughs). We were around at the end of the nineties, and we made the ‘Man Who’ album which was pretty incongruous with what was

Fran: Interesting story about that track is that it is a co-write between me and Tim from Keane. He sent me a text and said he’d written a song that sounded like him doing a bad impersonation of Travis!

And it’s album number eight for you guys - ‘Everything At Once’. Do you feel a bit of a resurgence at the moment? Andy: Yeah. It’s been nice. You can’t design the albums to be good – you just make them – and it’s just turned out really well. It’s kind of nice – I think we’re in the best place we’ve been in ages. Fran: We made a movie with it. Usually you make a video for a song and we’ve got eight potential singles on the album which is unheard of. So I thought we should maybe do something that covers the entire album. We went off and I wrote and directed (a film). You’re on tour throughout May. You’re looking forward to that? Andy: Yeah. We’ve done one proper full show in Japan, and we had eight songs in the set and they sat brilliantly with all the old songs. It’s going to be an exciting show I think. Fran: The thing is because we’ve done the album and the movie, we’ve done the visuals so they look great so we were like "we have to bring the live show up to that level as well”. So for the first time ever it’s a ’show’ show!

A word from the Mayor. . .

High Risk Dress Codes I’ve had lots of conversations on dress codes recently following the recent reports about the receptionist sent home for refusing to wear high heels. Nicola Thorp, a temp, arrived on her first day in flat shoes only to be told she must wear shoes with a two to four inch heel. Since this story hit the headlines this requirement has unsurprisingly been scrapped! While a requirement to wear high heels may be unusual many employers have some kind of dress code. This is usually because we want employees to project a certain image of the organisation or it may be due to health and safety requirements. And although there is no specific law on dress codes as an employer you have the right to enforce a dress code at work if it is ‘reasonable’ to do so. If this case has made you think you need to review your written (and unwritten) dress code here’s a few practical tips

to help you stay on the right side of ‘reasonable’; n Ask your employees what they think. n

Make your policy clear – don’t just say professional dress give examples of what can and can’t be worn.

n

Make sure your dress code fits with your workplace culture and business sector.

n

Different dress codes for men and women can be acceptable but make sure the standards remain the same.

n

Think carefully (and seek advice) before deciding not to let employees wear clothing etc. connected to their religion.

n

Make sure you enforce any dress code consistently to avoid claims of discrimination.

If you have any questions or need advice on dress codes for your business please get in touch.

I moved to Newbury more than 30 years ago and was elected to Newbury Town Council in 1997, so it’s an honour and privileged to have been elected Mayor in my 19th year as a Town Councillor. I have been actively involved in several community organisations over the years and I am presently chair of trustees at West Berkshire Mencap and chairman of Kennet Community Radio. In the relatively short time since I was elected mayor, I have attended dozens of events, ranging from the opening of a wheelchair swing in Victoria Park to opening Truckfest while riding on the back of a monster truck! The sight of the happy young faces on the Victoria Park wheelchair swing after I had officially opened it was a particular joy. At the other end of the age spectrum, it was my privilege to lead Newbury Town Council’s celebrations of her Majesty’s 90th birthday. Newbury residents whose 90th birthday year was the same as her Majesty’s were special guests at the Town Council’s “Picnic in the Park”. As public sector funding for charities decreases, local charities, and the people that they help and support, are increasingly reliant on public donations. As well as bringing pleasure to young and old during my year as Mayor, I hope that I can use the office of Mayor to help raise awareness of these charities and the dedicated volunteers who run them. Julian Swift-Hook Mayor of Newbury

Each business customer is assigned a local business manager, who is able to make lending decisions on an individual case-by-case basis. Our managers pride themselves on taking the time to really get to know the customer and their business, and to understand how they can best meet its needs, often visiting customers in their place of work, in order get to the heart of what they do and the unique challenges they face. As part of its community ethos, Metro Bank stores regularly host a range of networking events focussed on different sectors and specialisms, bringing together like-minded local people and businesses.

Sometimes, these important plans do not get the attention they may require and in many cases get “put off” all together. When your circumstances change, such as starting a family, changing jobs, starting your own business or receiving an inheritance, a review of your financial goals is crucial. However it is generally best to look at your whole financial affairs across the board, not just the issue that is of most immediate concern. It can sometimes be hard to deal with one particular issue in isolation as most areas of financial planning are interconnected. Working closely with clients is important which results in a relationship built on trust and a real in-depth understanding of their personal finances. This is why we provide regular valuations, hold regular meetings and have phone calls with all our clients.

Sunshine n Use an intensive conditioning treatment weekly to rehydrate the hair and

boost shine with products that contain silicone. n Using products that contain SPF or UV filters does help protect your hair

from the sun’s harmful rays. n Boost your colour with colour shampoo and conditioner. It’s also best to trim

split ends and limit heat styling for a while to give hair a rest.

When Swimming n Always ensure that your hair is wet

before going into a swimming pool/ the sea so that it will not absorb as much of the salt or chlorine. n Rinse hair after swimming. n Braid or plait long hair with leave-in

conditioner. In the evening remove and you will have loose glossy curls. Keeps you cool in the day and glam for the evening!

Glowing At last! The sun has come out and it’s beginning to feel like summer is finally on it’s way. Summer can take its toll on your hair, fading colour, causing dryness and breakage and making hair look dull and tired. Make sure you glow as the sun sets by following Buzz’s guest columnist Guy Kremer’s expert tips. . .

Intensive Hair Repair n Book an appointment for a trim

and remove split ends preventing further damage to your hair. n Take quick remedial action by using

a deeply penetrating hair repair treatment which will deliver a dramatic improvement in condition and shine. n Bleached or highlighted hair will

have soaked up minerals and chemicals from swimming pools and may well be showing signs of a green tinge. Use a deep cleansing shampoo to strip away deposits and restore natural lustre. n Natural curls could be suffering

from damaged or lifted cuticles which, makes hair look dull and makes it prone

to tangle. Boost curls using a curl cream adding life. Follow by warming a few drops of serum in palms and work through outer layers of hair to give instant shine. n Finally treat

yourself to a visit to the salon for an intensive treatment, cut and a new colour to lift your spirits in time for colder days ahead.

The Globalisation of Fashion

New York City seems a million miles away from here. . . especially for me. My name is Janine and two months ago, I left my job working in fashion in the Big Apple and crossed an ocean to make a new home in Berkshire! Last time I was in England was almost 10 years ago. Back then, I felt that even though we spoke the same language, I was worlds away from home. The biggest difference for me was the fashion. The UK was really indie and cool compared to the stylised, glossy look of my hometown.

Today everything is different. I no longer feel out of place in my US clothes. Rather than each country having a very unique fashion vibe, designers seem to pick elements from every culture and have merged them into a single, global, fashion mix. . . plus so many more brands are accessible worldwide.

6.

Yes, despite encompassing vast oceans, seven continents and billions of people, the world is becoming a much smaller place and the world of fashion is shrinking with it.

Take a cue from the catwalks of Paris, London, NY and Milan and add a dose of girly to your wardrobe this summer!

Ruffles in Bloom

Anna Kendrick (pictured), Amal Clooney & Jessica Chastain all dazzled on the red carpet in bright shades of this season's hottest hue!"

Sunny Yellow With the temperatures warming up, it's the perfect time to introduce a cheery shade of yellow into your wardrobe. Bask in the glow of our new favourite hues, buttercup and primrose. Not only will such bright shades help you stand out, but injecting colour will help elevate your mood too! According to Ken Downing, Fashion Director of Neiman Marcus, "Colour attracts, it excites and ignites the imagination. Colour gives immediate credit in a room and in a wardrobe, proving that you live your life on the right side of relevance." Designers such as Prabal Gurung, Christopher Kane, Roksanda, and Lela Rose all agree, they incorporated vivid yellows into their summer collections at Fashion Week. Yes, yellow really is the colour of the season!

ON trend

Although there's nothing wrong with a floral frock or a floaty skirt adorned with ruffles, designers are offering a fresh new take on a summer style staple with bolder prints, interesting shapes and new cuts. These feminine accents look gorgeous when floating on sheer layers of organza or cascading down a column dress. However, a more innovative look can be seen when incorporated onto menswear inspired pieces (such as a floral suit at Arthur Arbesser), mixed in with a second unexpected element (like florals and bright orange cones at Moschino) or simply when playing with cuts-out and frilly fabrics (like the gorgeous ruffles at Francesco Scognamiglio).

At last summer has arrived! Here are our tips to shine. . .

Colourful mascara is one of the easiest ways to make your eyes pop, much faster than messing about with bright eyeliners or blending eyeshadows.

A Rosy Perspective Add a healthy flush to your summer complexion. MAC lead makeup artist Diane Kendall, described the look she created for Carolina Herrera's Spring/Summer 2016 New York Fashion Week collection as "[the] inner beauty of the soul shining through." With fresh clean skin and Powder Blush in "Blushbaby" applied to the apples of the cheeks, Kendall brought out each girl's natural radiance. Other designers who opted for a touch of rosiness include Vivienne Tam, Narciso Rodriguez and at London Fashion Week, J.JS LEE.

Bold, Beautiful and Coloured Lashes! While classic black may never truly go out of style, summer is a great time to try out a playful new hue. Tinted lashes aren't exactly new, but these latest eye-popping shades will have you lusting over purple, green and even gold shades. Incorporating a brightly coloured mascara will give you an instant wow factor!

The Raven Queen

The Wedding Girl

Pauline Francis

Sophie Kinsella

The death of Edward VI at the tender age of 15 saw the throne pass to a Lady Jane Grey, just 16 years old. Jane usurped Edward’s sisters Mary and Elizabeth, but she was merely a pawn in a political game of power.

Milly is about to marry the man of her dreams. The son of a successful millionaire business man, her future seems assured. A society wedding is planned but then the wedding photographer arrives to stay at her parents’ B&B. He and Milly recognise each other, though at first she doesn’t know from where. When the penny drops Milly is struck with fear.

A few days later it was declared that Mary was in fact the rightful queen and Jane was accused of treason. Just nine days after her accession to the throne she was beheaded at the Tower of London. In this novel aimed at young adult readers we learn what Lady Jane Grey’s life might have been like.

A chance encounter on a college lawn in Oxford ten years ago when she was a naïve 18-year-old had led to a rash decision which now has ramifications and threatens to bring her dream wedding crashing down.

The Extreme Autograph Hunters

Ruth Wheeler

It is 1947 and Sally J Freedman is a 10-year-old girl living in New Jersey. Stories of the war in Europe still have an impact on her. She receives the news that her family is moving south to Miami Beach in order to help her sick brother who needs a warmer climate.

Newbury-based science-fiction author Ruth Wheeler has written her fourth novel aimed at young adults and anyone who likes a good dose of humour with their science-fiction.

Sally soon realises that life in the southern states of America is very different to the life she has lived in New Jersey. Segregation is still an issue in the late 1940s and Sally is shocked to discover that a black family on the sleeper train that they are travelling on have been asked to move to a different carriage.

Alistair and Jeremy, two autograph collectors, happen across a real, working time-machine. The friends travel through time collecting autographs from the great and good of history, getting into scrapes along the way with everyone from The Beatles to William Shakespeare, with fellow autographhunters Rosemary and Joanne hot on their heels.

Local Buzz visited the beautiful, Grade I listed, Shaw House in Newbury on a sunny Thursday afternoon last month.

Mrs. Farquhar In 1905, Shaw House was purchased by the Honorable Mrs. Farquhar, the youngest daughter of Thomas, 1st Lord Deramore.

Mrs. Farquhar’s

at Shaw House in Newbury

W

e were given a warm welcome by Nik Stewart, the House Manager, whose enthusiasm and knowledge of the House was fascinating and gave us a real insight into the rich history of the House dating back to 1581, which, over the centuries has welcomed royalty, seen action during the Civil War, housed soldiers during World War II and schooled generations of local children.

After being shown to our table in the stunning Chandos Dining Room, we were greeted by Judith, the Visitor Services Officer who would be looking after us. Judith was so friendly and helpful that we felt immediately at ease and able to sit back, relax and enjoy the historic surroundings. The room was beautifully restored with reproduction silk papers on the walls, natural oak floors and a beautiful chandelier, the dining room takes its name from the Duke of Chandos who owned the House in 1728. The afternoon tea is named after another distinguished owner of the House, the Honourable Mrs. Farquhar, who was a wealthy widow with a taste 26

for the finest things that Edwardian life could offer. During her ownership in 1905, the House was furnished with expensive antiques and the gardens were adorned with beautiful rose beds. Afternoon tea is a set menu which starts with a selection of Fair Trade tea, but coffee was also available, we chose the classic English Breakfast which was followed by a three tiered plate of delicate finger sandwiches with fillings of smoked salmon, grated cheese, Wiltshire gammon, egg mayonnaise & cress.

And for those with a sweet tooth you will not be disappointed. We finished our tea with a scone with clotted cream and locally produced jam, a generous slice of homemade Victoria sponge cake and a slice of fruit cake. We then took a stroll around the House and grounds which are open to the public free of charge from February to September on weekends and during school holidays. How lucky we are to have such a historically important building right on our doorsteps in Newbury, we will certainly be back!

Afternoon tea is served on selected Thursdays throughout the year at 12:00 or 2:30pm. To enquire about availability or to book call 01635 279279 or online www.westberkshireheritage.or/whats-on Shaw House, Church Road, Newbury RG14 2DR

Local activist and parliamentary spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats in Newbury, Judith Bunting speaks to. . .

“There is so much promise in the world. People benefit beyond measure from a little extra help and encouragement to make the most of what they have.”

Dinesh Dhamija W

e often hear how small businesses today lacking funding, but Dhamija, founder of the first European online travel agency Ebookers, says the situation has never really been that different. In 1980 Dhamija and his wife Tani started their own bricks and mortar travel business called Flight Bookers, which sold tickets from a kiosk in Earl’s Court. In 1996, having been introduced to the relatively new idea of the Internet, Dhamija transformed the company into Europe’s first ecommerce travel agency, Ebookers, a name many readers will remember. By accessing the full European market of, then, 300 million people the company’s travel sales exploded from $0 to $1 billion by 2004. The Ebookers operation spread to 11 countries across Europe and employees went from 0 to 2000, 700 of which were in the UK. At the recent Newbury event, Dhamija told the audience how today even our smallest local businesses have access to a market of 500 million people. Selling products and services to such a large customer base, he said, is easier and more profitable now than ever before. During his remarkable personal business journey, Dhamija was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year, became a member of the British Travel Hall of Fame, and was

named the GG2 Asian Man of the Year. Currently, he is President of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TIE) London, an organization that encourages successful entrepreneurs to foster the next generation of young business people and also runs programmes dedicated to providing education to senior school students. Recently, Dhamija accepted the appointment as advisor to the Liberal Democratic Party on Enterprise. Newbury Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson, Judith Bunting, said, “Supporting and encouraging entrepreneurship in Newbury and West Berkshire is a key priority for me. It is fantastic that our party is now able to draw on Dinesh’s vast business experience.” Outside of business, Dhamija’s focus is child health and education. He is Governor of the Rainbow Foundation in the UK, which offers support to children with serious medical problems, and has been an adviser at the mental health charity Scope. He also founded

two charities in India. The first, Chikitsa, provides free medicines and travelling clinics to slum dwellers on the outskirts of New Delhi. His second charity, Shiksha, provides free education to children of transient building site-workers. Shiksha has more than 1200 registered students of which 800 - 900 attend school on a regular basis. As Dhamija says, “There is so much promise in the world. Osteopathy is particularly useful in the prevention and treatment of sport injuries as we look at how the body works as a unit.

ne of our founding principles is that structure governs function; seems obvious right? If a building doesn’t have the correct foundations, it is probably going to collapse at some point. The human body is the same. . . maybe just less dramatic. Osteopathy can therefore help restore structural balance, improve joint mobility and reduce adhesions and soft tissue restrictions, so that ease of movement can be restored and your performance enhanced. Even if you aren’t injured and you just wish to keep fit, osteopathy can help keep you supple and improve your muscle tone to reduce the risk of injury- why wait to be injured to come and see me?

Cranial Osteopathy Is your baby feeling irritable and fussy, crying excessively, have difficulty in feeding and latching to the breast or bottle, dislike lying flat, or is showing signs of colic or reflux? For many babies, particularly those born after a lengthy or assisted labour, residual birth tension may cause them to feel unsettled, uncomfortable and to have difficulties feeding. It’s summer and it’s time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine! As a mum, most of my days are spent on the playground with my son so here’s a few great ways to workout while your little one has a play!

Playground Workout Swings Swings are a great way to challenge your core. Try a single leg squat. Begin by standing with your back facing the swing. Place your hands on your hips and raise one foot onto the seat behind you. Now using the supporting leg, bend your knee to a 90 degree angle, pushing the other leg away and therefore moving the swing upwards. Keeping your weight into the heel of the front leg, push back up to the starting position. Try 10 each leg. You can also use the swing for Press ups, Tricep dips and Hamstring curls.

Benches

Benches are a great place for a cardio workout. Simply step up and down for a warm up and pick up the pace to progress the exercise. Using levels is also a great way to up the intensity of any resistance exercise. I often use a bench for incline and decline press ups, tricep dips, squat jumps and decline planks.

Just Play! At the playground half of my exercise is chasing my son around and clambering up and down the climbing frame with him. Fitness doesn’t have to be boring. Enjoying exercise is the best way to make it sustainable. So mix up the type of exercise you do, Yoga, Running, HIIT, Resistance etc all have their benefits but most of all make sure to always have fun with what you do!

For some years the market has been characterised by recession and lack of demand with oversupply.

We now find that supply of space is extremely limited and it is possible we may run out of industrial space altogether in the coming months.

Property Roundup T

he position has now become reversed, especially in the industrial and warehousing market. We now find that supply of space is extremely limited and it is possible we may run out of industrial space altogether in the coming months. The office market has similar low supply but there are prospects of development with some 80,000 sq ft in the pipeline, but this does not become available until 2017 so the immediate supply is at critically low levels. There are also sites for development on Hambridge Road and Greenham Park but it takes time to develop and plan to provide bespoke space. Recent transactions include: 7,150 sq ft of warehouse, let at 2 Hambridge Lane on behalf of IO Estates Limited. The property was acquired by Newbury Self Store Limited, whose business has expanded from their existing premises in Argents Mere, Hambridge Lane. The agent also reports, acting on behalf of PC Cox Limited, that they have negotiated the sale of the freehold of 16 industrial

and warehouse units at Turnpike Industrial Estate in Newbury. PC Cox are in the process of relocating their business to Hungerford and the site has been purchased by Greenham Common Community Trust. The buildings will be vacated towards the end of 2016 and will be refurbished by the Trust and will then be offered to let. The Trust were represented by Richardson Commercial. Limited activity in the retail market continues but the agent reports a number of lease renewals

and reviews at Crownmead in Thatcham which is showing the first signs of improvement in rental growth for many years so confidence would appear to be returning. On the office front, 2 West Mills Yard has been let to Hackle Security who have moved from London. The 400 sq ft suite was on the market at ÂŁ9,000 per annum, another suite on the same development is under offer and once let the scheme will be 100% let.

Once you’ve replaced the covers, tidy any loose threads, either by stitching them or trimming them with scissors, and darn any holes with matching thread. Remember to tuck in any ends as you stitch.

At this time of year, things start getting a little more sociable as the evenings draw out and the temperatures rise, so here is a little guide to re-vamping one of the most important and expensive pieces of furniture you own – the sofa.

How to re-vamp your old sofa without spending a fortune!

Cushions and throws can be used to give bright colours if you have a plain scheme in the room. This is handy if you wish to keep up with trends, but can’t afford to completely redecorate. If your sofa is looking tired, flat or boring, there are some simple things that you can do to pep it up:

Take off any removable covers, and clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the covers aren’t removable, spot clean them with a suitable detergent, but make sure to do a patch test first, on a piece of fabric that won’t show. Good luck, and remember If you have them dryto email your questions to cleaned, air them out sarah@lovelyonabudget.co.uk before putting them if you want help! back on.

If there are stains or unsightly marks on the main bulk of the sofa that you just can’t shift, try using a coordinating throw to cover either the whole, or part of the sofa. Next, put extra stuffing in those flat cushions. Polywadding is relatively inexpensive, and can be purchased in any good fabric shop. The thicker, the better – I’ve used 25mm. Cut a square piece the same size as your cushion, and tuck it into the cover, alongside the pad. Give the whole thing a good plump up, and it will instantly look much better. Some extra throw cushions give added colour and an extra feel of luxury. Try using different textures, such as fake fur, silk, denim or wool.

garden view

Ornaments polarise gardeners. They’re a love ‘em or hate ‘em subject. Buzz Gardener

Fergus Green

Garden

ornaments I

fell firmly into the hate ‘em category. I thought they had a place in big country gardens but looked slightly tacky in suburbia. This antipathy may date back to my childhood and Mrs. Frost, our elderly neighbour, who had a front garden stuffed to the brim with gnomes, windmills and concrete toadstools. If our ball ever strayed into this shrine to kitsch she’d burst from her house with a bansheelike scream, brandishing a broom at us.

Somewhere along the way though I’ve mellowed. As I’ve studied show gardens and magazines I’ve realised that ornaments have a definite place in a garden as long as two important considerations are met:

Context The ornaments complement the style of the garden. Classical statuary doesn’t work in contemporary spaces, while traditional gardens might need to avoid stainless steel or modern, abstract sculptures.

Ornament Ideas. . . not a gnome in sight!

Size Ornaments should be an appropriate size for the setting. Rules are there to be broken of course and whatever your garden type or size the ornament you choose should be special to you. My father had a grumpy gargoylelike creature, set among ferns at the bottom of his patch. It made everyone who saw it smile in recognition of my dad’s own avuncular manner. A girl friend of mine has a series of small bronze faeries set around her tiny plot, which are perfectly in tune with her personality. I favour natural materials myself but several years ago I purchased beautiful and rather elegant heron created from recycled metal. I adore it because it reflects both my love of birds and my passion for recycling. It stands near a boulder fountain and I occasionally brandish a broomstick at my sons when their football strays too near. . .

l

For minimalist contemporary plots, mirrored columns and pyramids look striking. l

l

Don’t be frightened to show your sense of humour. Quirky can look brilliant in the right setting.

l Sculptor

Dennis Fairweather’s best seller is a stone face and hands which emerge from a tub of water as if the figure had just been for a dip!

l

Classical statuary and urns look best in more formal, traditional settings. They are best made from marble or stone. Resin copies can look tacky.

To set off ornamental grasses try ceramic balls in blues and greens.

Natural materials can be a good starting point for ornament novices. Balls and sculptures made from willow are subtle and elegant additions to any garden.
