A sunny summers day is the perfect excuse to pack up a picnic basket and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you head down to a local park, set up a blanket on the beach, or embark on a long hike.

The perfect picnic The presentation at a picnic counts.

This isn't a shallow obsession with looks over substance.

Nobody wants a sterile picnic and grass in the lemonade as part of the fun. But a little extra effort, like laying out the food on a clean tablecloth and keeping the food pretty and fresh, goes a long way.

Clingfilm and plastic boxes look seedy and should be kept

to a minimum. Use greaseproof paper and string to wrap sandwiches and cakes (this will stop them getting sweaty).

There's no need to go into overdrive.

Glyndebourne-style picnics with candelabra, separate courses and elaborate dishes are a bit Hyacinth Bucket.

Struggling with a plate, fork and glass while sitting on an uneven patch of grass is stressful, so go for finger-food rather than bowls of salad. Sandwiches are an obvious choice, but the best sandwiches are eaten within minutes of being made and fillings that travel well are few and far between.

Tomatoes go soggy in minutes and dressed lettuce goes slimy.

Stick to the classics, such as ham and English mustard or chicken in curried mayonnaise. Don't forget the family favourites.

The best picnics are lengthy, sociable affairs, so have food to graze on through the afternoon. Chicken skewers can be munched with ease. A cucumber cut into chunks, cherry tomatoes and breadsticks are good to nibble on.

Keep the pudding simple. A good cake, a watermelon cut into chunks, strawberries and a bowl of cherries on ice (transported in a Thermos flask) are a feast.

Your Local Buzz Photographic Competition Thatcham Photographic Club, in collaboration with Thatcham Town Council and Scion Communications Ltd has launched their 2018 Photographic Competition for all students living in or studying within 10 miles of Thatcham.

The competition will form part of this year’s Thatcham Festival which incorporates a high number of free and open events and activities in Thatcham and which will run from 6th to 19th October.

There are 3 age groups with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each group.

Thatcham Photographic Club encourages young people to take an interest in photography and frequently works with young peoples’ groups with activities and workshops to foster and develop photographic awareness.

Line closures - more dates announced GWR and Network Rail have confirmed more dates when a significant part of the line between Newbury and Reading will be closed. This is to facilitate electrification works, track renewal and ballast work.

The first phase of works is scheduled to take place over the following four working-day periods, with a number of additional line blocks required to complete the work.

Annete Louise Henry Annete was one of seven children of John Henry who owned Colthrop Mill.

One daughter, Evelyn, set-up and ran a Sunday school at Colthrop.

Within the village itself there was a growing need for a community hall and thus the idea of a village hall was instigated in 1903 by Miss Annete Louise Henry. Plans were made to erect a venue to accommodate 200 people at concerts and other entertainment events. Within a few years £350 had been raised.

The Parish Hall was built by Mr. W. Child of Thatcham and was opened on 10th April 1907 by Mrs Benyon, wife of the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire. Annete became the first female member of parish council having been co-opted in October 1912. She also served the British Red Cross as a cook during 1917 to 1919.

As if this wasn’t enough Annete was also a manager of council school, now called Francis Baily School.

She was a liberal who decorated her fathers house in bold and bright colours when Harold Stranger came to hold meeting. Her father had other ideas and overnight changed all decorations to conservative colours. In 1935, Annete was awarded a MBE for her work in public service.

Huge investment in Newbury town centre The first step in the transformation of what has come to be known as Newbury’s ‘southern gateway’ takes place this month.

Work is starting on moving the bus station from its current position on Market Street to a new location at the Wharf. This is expected to take six months to complete but buses will for the time being continue to operate from Market Street.

This is phase one of a major project which will see a new multi-storey car park and around 230 new homes on the site in Market Street, all due to be completed by late 2020, linking the town centre and the railway

station and hopefully revitalising this end of the town. Along with the electrification of the railway and significant improvements being made to the station, this will create a smart new ‘entrance’ for people arriving in Newbury as well as much needed homes for Newbury residents. I was at the Newbury Vision 2026 conference in May last year when this was part of the discussion, along with other plans for the town, and it’s good to see it starting to happen.

It’s here! Hedgerows echo with merry warbling and whistling in sweet, wild notes and the blue bells are brightening up the woodlands again: fete season is upon us. The time has now come for me to descend on North West Hampshire’s village greens and school playing fields to test my eye on the coconut shy, unleash my children upon bat-the-rat and swelter in the sun. Indeed, gazing out on the scorched vista at Hurstbourne Priors this Bank Holiday Monday it was hard to believe that less than two months ago the place was buried in ice and snow.

You get the sense that we have waited longer than usual for our shot of sunshine.

People are pouncing on the rays with more than their usual gusto. Now with the ‘Beast from the East’ at bay we can look back at a biting winter from a more comfortable distance and it definitely seems that the deeper the chill the brighter the summer. The land looks positively greener and humming with life. It is good to see nature thriving so visibly again as southern England enacts its annual ritual of transforming itself into the world’s most verdant garden.

It is very telling, I think, that the English have such a close relationship with the summer countryside and that quintessential Englishness is to be found in a straw hat, a jug of Pimms and the tombola.

Since my election in 2015 I have attended approaching 100 fetes and by now, the kids are aficionados of most of the acts we see during through the season.

It is always great to see North West Hampshire at its best and it’s a tribute to the spirit of the villages that so much work is put in to make the fetes a resounding success. Thank you all for your efforts and see you at the burger stall.

The Football World Cup commences 14th June - 15th July 2018 in Russia.

Russia will open the World Cup in Moscow when they face Saudi Arabia on Thursday June 14. Portugal vs Spain is one of the most enticing of the early ties, which takes place in Sochi on the second day of the tournament while two of the big favourites, Brazil and Germany, begin their campaigns on the first Sunday against Switzerland and Mexico respectively.

England's first game is in Volgograd on Monday June 18, before playing Panama (Sunday June 24) and Belgium (Thursday June 28). The final will take place in Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday July 15.

England is considered to be 5th favourites for the World Cup tournament. Spain

is currently the favourite, followed by Brazil, France and Germany.

The growth in the UK consumption of fish at barbecue time shows that consumers have discovered the goodness in grilling fresh fish in the open air, much like our southern European friends have been doing for decades.

Cyclo-Cross Local bike shop, Banjo Cycles together with the Newbury Specialized Concept Store and local custom cycle component company, RaceWare Direct will be sponsoring a new youth cyclo-cross development team for the 2018/19 season. Additional support will be provided by Vittoria Tyres and Endura cycle clothing.

The team will comprise 8 local riders, male and female, aged 15-17 who will be racing locally in the Wessex Cyclo-Cross League, around the UK in the British Cycling National Trophy Series and also abroad.

The team members are: Angus Hawkins, Arthur Boulton, Duncan Pritchard, Gareth Davies, Emily Conn, Amelie Prior, Amelia Cox and Alexa Hawkins.

Launch of the team was at the Banjo Cycles Summer Cyclo-Cross Series in Goldwell Park, Newbury 17th May. The series runs for 6 weeks and attracts nearly 200 local riders each week.

The team also plans to engage with the community and coaching sessions will be available for local riders from the late summer and throughout the autumn months offering all the opportunity to try or develop their Cyclo-Cross skills alongside team members.

Cyclo-Cross is a discipline that combines both off-road and on-road cycling. Riders take part on what look like road bikes with appropriately treaded tyres and requires fitness and a high level of bike handling skill.

Typical Cyclo-Cross terrain includes grass, woodland trails, hurdles, pavement, mud and even sand!

Two bikes are required by each rider as courses can be very muddy and often requires bike changes during the race.

Power washers are needed to clean the bikes in the pits.

It is the No.1 sport in Belgium and fast-growing in the UK. The current Cyclo-Cross Junior world champion is British with many other British riders at the top of the sport.

Opt for a pair of short-fingered mitts that will prevent your grip slipping through sweat, will protect your hands in the case of a tumble and will help support your hands, preventing nerve damage.

Sort your shorts If you don’t own a pair of bib shorts now is the time to invest.

Why won’t regular shorts do?

Because they have a waistband that can dig into your tummy – not great when you’re bent over on a bike all day.

Recover right Before you set out on your ride, pre-prepare your recovery drink and leave it chilling in the fridge for when you get in. Something like a flavored protein shake would be ideal as the fluid in it will help boost hydration while the protein will help repair muscle tissue.

Newbury and Thatcham Handybus and The Newbury Community Car Scheme are another of the charities activities and their fleet of red buses assist with around 15,000 passenger journeys every year. The car scheme helps individuals to get to appointments of all kinds.

The charity also operates The West Berkshire Village Agent Community Navigator service, these volunteers visit people who may be struggling with a number of problems. The trained volunteers help people to get the services and support they need. At the centre of this charity there are around

Valentino Rossi is an Italian professional motorcycle racer and multiple MotoGP World Champion. He is one of the most successful motorcycle racers of all time, with nine Grand Prix World Championships to his name - seven of which are in the premier class.

Died 20 July 1937 Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian engineer and inventor who successfully demonstrated the working of long-distance wireless telegraph and radio signal.

He began experimenting in his father’s estate and was successful in sending wireless signals over short distances. He took his machine to England where his invention was received with enthusiasm. One of the interested parties was British Post Office. Within a year, his successful endeavour of broadcasting to 12 miles, Marconi applied for his first patent. Determined to establish that wireless waves were not influenced by the curves of Earth, he transmitted his historic wireless signals across the Atlantic.

Meanwhile in Italy, the art of traditional gelato making was handed from father to son. It continued to be improved and perfected right up to the 20th century, when many gelato makers began to emigrate, taking their how to the rest of Europe.

Arborio rice Arborio is the classic risotto rice from the north Italian region of Piedmont. It is probably the best all-rounder for cooking. It is a medium to long-grain rice that can absorb a lot of cooking liquid yet still retain a good ‘bite’ when fully cooked.

Taleggio A mildly-flavoured whole cows’ milk cheese from northern Italy with a soft texture and a fruity, creamy character.

It has a pinkish-brown rind, and a paleyellow interior which, although elastic, tends to be increasingly crumbly towards the centre of the cheese.

Made in square blocks, Taleggio has a pungent aroma that becomes more pronounced as the cheese ages. It is protected by an EU PDO which means that it can only be produced in specified regions of Lombardy and Piedmont.

The extra creaminess is credited to its high starch content.

Bresaola

Fine

Bresaola is a regional Italian speciality of cured beef fillet from Lombardy.

A raw beef fillet is cured in salt then air-dried for several months, during which time it turns a deep red colour.

It's traditionally served in very thin slices, dressed with nothing more than a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a squeeze of lemon juice. Once sliced, it dries out quickly, so it's best to try and avoid buying pre-sliced bresaola; instead have it sliced to order.

Dolcelatte Literally ‘sweet milk’ in Italian, this soft, blue-veined cows’ milk cheese from Lombardy was developed as a milder version of traditional Gorgonzola (hence it’s also sometimes known as Gorgonzola Dolce). It’s renowned for its soft, creamy flavour.

Pecorino Pecorino is the Italian name for ewes’ milk cheese. It is generally used more specifically to refer to hard ewes’ milk cheeses from central Italy and the island of Sardinia. Although young, fresh pecorinos can be found, you are more likely come across aged examples.

This is a very quick and simple recipe, Linguine Alla Carbonnara, we picked this up from a wonderful little restaurant in Rome a few years ago and was an instant hit on the menu when we got back.

Linguine Alla Carbonnara

Quick dinner!

Ingredients Blanched linguine 300g (75 grams per person) Good quality smoked bacon whole piece about 300g diced or diced smoked lardons 300g Good quality parmesan 100gs grated fine Garlic one whole bulb diced fine Double Cream 200ml Pepper course ground

Let's get going. . .

1. Heat frying pan on the hob, add a drop of oil just a little. Now add your diced bacon and render down until the fat is coming out then add your diced garlic and lightly colour.

2. Add in the double cream and parmesan and stir.

Bring to a boil and add the pasta. Toss the pasta in the sauce until it is clinging to the pasta and season with pepper, you shouldn’t need any salt, now remove from the heat.

3. Use a meat fork and twist the pasta around and lift in to a bowl to serve once the pasta is in all the bowls, spoon the remanding sauce over the pasta garnish with a little fresh chopped parsley and enjoy. Italian simplicity at its best.

Our hair gets harmed in many different ways during the summer – overexposure to sun’s harmful rays, sweat, humidity and in the swimming pool with chlorinated water. A little pre-emptive care is all your hair needs to stay beautiful!

damage to them. So make sure you go easy on any chemical hair treatments during this period. Avoid too much colouring. If you want to colour your hair during the summer, try and do it a month or two before the sun hits hard.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE OPENING A SAVINGS ACCOUNT Setting aside money for unexpected emergencies is a part of life. Mortgage or rent payments, food and utilities, a failed MOT or an unexpected vet bill can all effect how much money you can afford to save each month.

However, if you are able to save regularly, growing your own nest egg is a prudent thing to do. If you have been thinking about opening a savings account, but are not sure where to start, we have put together four points to consider.

1. Set yourself a savings goal: Those who set themselves a target, or have something specific they are saving for, usually save £550 more a year than those who don’t, claim the Government’s savings arm NS&I. Defining your savings goals will help you understand your savings needs and can steer you towards appropriate accounts. If you open an account that suits your savings plan, it can help you reach your goals more quickly and efficiently. There are a range of savings accounts on the market, such as easy access accounts and ISA’s, each of which has their own features and suitability.

And, while setting a goal isn’t strictly necessary, it may help spur you on!

2. Shop around but don’t forget, loyalty can pay off too: Treat savings accounts in the same way you would your internet or gas provision – look at a range of provider’s savings account rates and compare them. By doing so, you can establish which account will give you a better return in interest. Visiting comparison websites such as Which? and Money Saving Expert is a good starting point for anyone looking for a savings account which is tailored to their needs.

Some banks and building societies also reward a customers’ loyalty if they decide to open a savings account with them.

Some offer their higher interest rates on ‘linked accounts’ or ‘member accounts’, which can only be opened if you are an existing customer of the bank or building society.

An ‘introductory rate term’ should never be hidden from you. With this in mind, it is always a good idea to thoroughly check the account’s terms and conditions before you sign any agreement. You can always set up a reminder to review your savings account when the introductory term is about to end.

4. The longer you commit your money to a savings account, the better the rate of interest: Shorter term, or ‘easy-access’ savings accounts usually provide instant access to your money and allow frequent withdrawals.

These accounts tend to have lower interest rates.

Alternatively if you open a ‘long-term’ savings account, with restrictions on withdrawals, the interest rates can be higher. As a rule of thumb, interest rates increase the longer you ‘tie-up’ your money. Some ‘long-term’ savings accounts allow only limited withdrawals or no withdrawals at all within an agreed time period. This makes them an unsuitable choice of account if you are saving for an emergency fund or a short-term goal.

June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions.

In the garden Plant out summer bedding and seed-raised plants, if not already done so. Make sure they are well watered in and keep moist during dry weather.

Gaps in herbaceous borders are best filled with annual bedding at this stage in the season. One exception is anemones (e.g. Anemone coronaria), which take about three months to flower after planting. The rhizomes are best planted now, after an overnight soaking, 5cm (2in) deep in a suitably moist but free-draining soil or compost with lots of added leaf mould or organic matter.

Perennials such as hollyhock, delphiniums and lupins can be sown directly into drills outside once the seed heads have ripened and started to split naturally. If garden space is limited you can sow them into pots and place them in a cold frame or by the base of a sheltered wall in filtered sunlight.
