Thatcham Historical Society

Thatcham: village or town? Many locals still call Thatcham a village, but we have a Town council, so what is it? At the time of Domesday, 1086, Thatcham was the administrative centre of a Hundred (an administrative area). By the 12th Century, it had a market and by c.1300 had became a Borough. The exact details and charters have since been lost to time. However in 1445 there is the record of “Ralph Castell, Constable of the town of Thatcham.” There are many other records, such as court proceedings from 1502 that note the "Towne of Thatcham."

The market appears to have died out in the 16th Century and it seems that the use of both Borough and Town, with a few exceptions, ceased by the time of the English Civil War where some records record Thatcham as a village. With a population of c.2,500 in 1900 Thatcham retained the village status, however a post-war population boom saw a rise from c.5,000 residents in 1951 to over 10,000 in 1971. This allowed the parish council to apply to become a town officially in 1974. Good news for West Berkshire

A place to call home

In amongst all the political turmoil last month, you might have been forgiven for not spotting two pieces of good news for West Berkshire. The first was to do with ‘bed days’ which are those days that people spend in hospital even though they are ready to leave, mainly because there is nowhere, or no care, for them to go to. West Berkshire’s ‘Delayed Transfer of Care’ team has managed to reduce the number of these by 51% over the period from April 2017 to April 2018. This is good news for the recovery of the people involved and for their families, as well as for the NHS, and represents hard work and creative thinking by the Council’s team.

Since being elected as the Member of Parliament for North West Hampshire I have found planning matters have produced some of the most bulging post bags. I am thrilled then, to have been appointed as the Government’s Minister for Housing and Planning by the Prime Minister this month and to have the opportunity to work at the heart of an area so important to my constituents and the country. Everyone deserves a safe, affordable and secure place to call home and fixing Britain’s broken housing market is of paramount importance to me. As I start the job it will be safety, affordability, environmental quality and my longstanding commitment to strong local plans and neighbourhood plans in the forefront of my mind. It is important to me that local communities are empowered to decide what kind of housing they want and where they want it. This is not about having less housing, but the right kind in the right place. Planning needs to be something done with people, not to them, and I hope we can continue to see growing volumes of building as we win back the trust and consent in the planning system across the country.

Richard with Kennet School sixth formers fund-raising in Parkway for the Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent hospice.

The other piece of news is that Newbury was singled out as a ‘winner’ on something called the Digital Influence index, with 64% of its local businesses active on social media as well as a rise in the number of independent shops in the town using social media to engage with customers. Evidence shows that there is a clear link between digital activity and physical footfall with shoppers increasingly starting their journey online so this proactive approach is really good news for our local high street.

Supporting grandparents Berkshire Grandparents Support Group is a safe supportive space for grandparents and close family members who have little or no contact with their grandchildren due to difficult family situations. On Wednesday 2nd May 2018, I attended the ‘Grandchildren’s Access Rights to their Grandparents’ debate in parliament brought by Nigel Huddleston, MP for Mid-Worcester. I believe the time is right to create a local group in Berkshire that would support all those grandparents in need. I am Debi Richens - I am an estranged parent and alienated grandparent. I have two granddaughters who I have not been allowed to get to know, the oldest girl born Jan 2015, and the youngest girl born Sept 2017. I have only seen the oldest a handful of times and have never met my youngest. The estrangement from my daughter has been ongoing since I started divorce proceedings in late 2005. There have been sporadic periods of contact however they have been difficult and limited. I have felt isolated and unwelcome by my own family.

Entertaining children on aeroplanes At holiday time, parents around the world worry about the ‘joys’ of flying with their young children. Here are some helpful top tips. . .

Longer lasting foods Offer foods that take longer to eat which will occupy your child for longer. A box of raisins is great because it contains natural sugars, while strawberries, grapes and cherry tomatoes are similarly healthy and fun to eat.

Portable DVD player or Tablet Sometimes frustrating, but on an aeroplane a welcome distraction. Without doubt the one thing all parents seem to agree on is investing in some sort of video tech.

Holidays!

Obviously not to be given to very young children, but for older ones you can make some amazing models!

Going on holiday is exciting, but there is so much to think about. . . reservations, passports, currency, cash cards, flight tickets and many more which can make anybody feel overwhelmed. Here are some tips to make it easier for you to relax and enjoy your holiday! Roll your garments

Divide your property

Roll, don’t fold your clothes. Not only does it save space, but it avoids creases too. Tuck underwear into the gaps and stick rolled up socks inside shoes. Wear your heaviest clothing to travel in, such as trousers and a sweatshirt or jacket to keep you warm on cooler evenings. After all, airlines weigh baggage, not you!

If you keep your wallet, keys, passport, and mobile in your purse or travel bag, then you’ll be in an unpleasant position if that bag goes missing or ends up stolen. A simpler way to carry property is to split them into different bags. If you loose your cash card then you’ve got a backup Visa card in another bag to use for the period of your trip. This one is maybe one of the most important travel packing tips.

Ziplock bags Do you really need it? Be ruthless with your clothing. Whatever clothes you think you’re going to need, get rid of at least a third. You’ll probably spend most of your time in your swimwear.

Every hour someone in the UK dies as a result of alcohol.

Our mission:

to build a UK where alcohol causes no serious harm We are a new, major national charity formed in April 2017 from the merger of two established alcohol charities: Alcohol Concern and Alcohol Research UK. Alcohol plays a major role in our society. While many people enjoy it, when drunk too often, or excessively, it can lead to serious harms. Low prices, advertising and marketing, peer pressure, stress, or our mental health can lead us to drink more – and at times much more – than we intend. In fact, latest figures show that two million of us across England and Wales are drinking harmfully. And that’s a big problem. Alcohol is linked to more than 60 medical conditions including liver disease, heart disease, some cancers and depression. Liver disease is becoming

more common, with deaths increasing by around 40% in a decade. It’s not only those who drink who suffer. Alcohol costs the NHS an estimated £3.5 billion a year and our police, courts and prisons many millions more. Alcohol misuse is a factor for one in five children in need of social care in England. The emotional costs are incalculable. We work to influence policy, fund research and provide information and support for everyone to drink more healthily.

You may know us as the charity behind Dry January.

Hybu iechyd; gwella bywydau

Gorgeous! This is Carys and Amy. Aren’t they gorgeous? They were sisters born 13 months apart, with the same bright future ahead of them.

But one of these girls is no longer with us. Alcohol is the leading cause of death for people aged 15 – 49 in the UK. Thousands of people like Amy have family photos with a cherished loved one missing. But this is avoidable and you can stop it happening.

Make your gift now and we’ll put it to work instantly. http://bit.ly/AlcoholConcernAmy

Beer is the oldest recorded recipe in the world. The ancient Egyptians first documented the brewing process on papyrus scrolls around 5,000 B.C. These first beers were brewed with things like dates, pomegranates and other indigenous herbs. The Egyptians used beer for religious ceremonies, with the Pharaoh directing the brewing schedule and distribution to the masses.

To Europe Beer eventually made its way from the Middle East across the Mediterranean to Europe, where it became an integral part of life. This was especially true in Northern Europe where abundant barley crops provided ample raw ingredients for brewers. Beer was valued both for its nutritional value and because it was a safe alternative to drinking water.

Middle Ages It was during the early Middle Ages that what we think of as modern beer was born. Brewers had been using malted barley as the main source of fermentable

sugar for hundreds of years, but the use of hops as a bittering and flavouring agent did not become common until around the twelfth century. Before that time, many different herbs and spices were used to balance the sweet malt flavours in beer; everything from spruce boughs to dried flowers to bitter roots had found their way into brew kettles. Around 1150 German monks began commonly using wild hops in beer and the ingredient quickly caught on. Brewers found that hops added a very pleasing, thirst quenching bitterness and as an added benefit, the hops acted as a natural preservative extending the life of their beers.

There is a huge range of different beer styles, but each falls into one of two main categories - ale or lager. ALES include bitters, milds, stouts,

porters, barley wines, golden ales and old ales, use top-cropping yeast. This forms a thick head and the process is quite short, vigorous and carried out at higher temperatures than lager, typically 18 - 24ยบC.

LAGERS are brewed with mostly

very lightly kilned malt. This produces different flavour characteristics from the pale malt used in ales, specific varieties of hops and bottomcropping yeast. This does not form the thick yeast head associated with ale fermentations and fermentation takes place at a relatively low temperature (10 - 15ยบC).

British Beers Along with Northern European countries like Germany and Belgium, the British Isles too, became a brewing center. Many styles of beer familiar to drinkers today have their roots here; pale ales, porters, and stouts have been brewed for hundreds of years. Beer has been such an integral part of life that the army issued daily beer rations to each soldier and the Royal Navy delivered beer to troops in even the furthest corners of the Empire.

Wine?Not Just Grapes!

e n i F e Th

e n i V

Any wine, on a very basic level, is made from fermenting a fruit. While people mostly associate wine with grapes, wine can be made from almost any fruit, as long as there’s enough sugar content in the fruit to convert into alcohol during the fermentation process. Fruits that can be made into wine range from the familiar (blackberries and bluberries) to the exotic (mango and pineapple). Apples However, one of the most widely produced non-grape fruit wines is apple cider, or “apple wine,” which is made from fermented apples. Apple wines are widely produced throughout England and the rest of the U.K. as well as in Germany, France (Brittany and Normandy), Spain (Asturias, Basque Country, and Galicia), Ireland, Argentina (Patagonia and Mendoza), and Australia (Tasmania). While ciders can be made of any apple variety, they are typically produced from specific varieties that are high in sugar, which as we have seen, helps facilitate the fermentation process. The most popular apple varieties for making cider in the UK are Yarlington Mill, Kingston Black and Chisel Jersey. Next time you’re

looking for different kind of wine pairing for a cheese plate, try a cider instead of a traditional grapebased wine. One of the ciders we recommend this month is Sheppy’s. This is a premium cider still made on the Sheppy family farm in Somerset. Available from Southwest Wine in Bristol.

Japanese But not only fruits are used to make popular wine. The Japanese have their own unique versions of wine made of rice. Sake is a well known wine with mysterious origins that date back to over 300 years before the current era. Sake in Japan is enjoyed by families and friends in an atmosphere of ritual and custom. There is a running debate over how best to serve sake. Traditionally sake was served warm. This was due to the more rudimentary production processes they had in the past. As production processes have been refined, so too has the quality of sake. So in short, good quality sake should be served

Colucci’s Prosecco will help get your next party started with panache!

slightly chilled, similar to a white wine 10 – 12ºC. If you want a good quality sake, expect to spend upwards of £25 per bottle or more. Making wines from other fruits and berries is more commonly practiced as a craft by home brewers. Some fruits such as cherries, raspberries, strawberries and pineapples are also very high in acid, which can translate into a very sour tasting wine. In these cases, sugar and/ or water can be added to help counter the fruit’s tart acidity. So if you want to experiment a bit more with wines, why not try a cider or a sake. Or if you are really daring, next time you go to a farmers market, look for a nice strawberry or cherry wine. Be bold!

Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in 1840.

Preparing your tea Allow the tea to brew between three and six minutes; leave it any longer and you risk ‘stewing’ the tea, damaging the flavour. Tea or milk first? Some say it is traditional to put milk into your cup first before pouring the tea. In the past, this was to stop low quality drinking vessels from cracking due to the hot liquid. It is not an issue nowadays and therefore more common to add milk after the tea. This allows you to add just the perfect amount of milk to create the tea colour of your liking. 32

Aftern

Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is surprisingly, a relatively new tradition.

The custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China, it was popularised during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza. However, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of ‘afternoon tea’ first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess

of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon.

The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.

. . . the Devon tradition is cream with jam on top, the Cornish prefer it the other way around!

noon Tea This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s the upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock.

Next, move onto the scones and cakes. Scones should break into two halves easily without the need for using a knife. They should be eaten in two halves, rather than being sandwiched back together.

Afternoon Tea Etiquette

There is an everlasting debate about whether cream or jam should be added first to the scone. While the Devon tradition is for cream with jam on top, the Cornish prefer it the other way around. Don’t worry, whichever way around you decide, you won’t commit a social faux pas. The only thing to remember is that scone should be pronounced ‘skon’ and not ‘skone’.

When deciding what order to eat your afternoon tea goodies, think savoury first and progress to sweet. Finger sandwiches served at afternoon tea always have their crusts cut off and are served in small squares, rectangles or triangles – ideal for eating by hand.

Cream or jam first?

Afternoon tea myths When drinking your tea, some people say sticking your little finger out creates a perfect balance when handling your tea cup. This is a myth, albeit a funny one. All fingers should be kept on or near the teacup when drinking your tea. 33

rasp berries Berries have been shown to be some of the healthiest foods on the planet. It seems new research is constantly being published and berries are being recognized and analyzed for their health giving properties. Goji Berries Sometimes called Chinese Wolfberry or Mede Berry, traditional societies link this potent berry to sexual vitality, happiness, longevity and overall physical strength. Grown in Tibet and Nepal, goji berries have been scientifically linked to possessing the ability to fight negative health 38

conditions and protect the liver from contaminates. Deep red in color, goji berries are composed of 18 essential amino acids, 21 trace minerals, vitamins B1, B2, B6, and E, linoleic acid, selenium, germanium and more beta carotene than the common carrot.

Blueberries The blueberry is an antioxidant powerhouse. That deep blue

color is related to high amounts of phytonutrients called anthocyanidins. These phytonutrients aid in the process of neutralizing free radical damage in our cells. Overtime, the collagen matrix of our tissues and cells begins to deteriorate. Blueberries help to keep this from happening, with a high capacity for free-radical neutralization.

Acai Berries The acai berry is a relatively new-found health treasure. Once only known in the forests of the Amazon rainforest, the acai berry was traditionally used as a powerfully healing, energy-boosting fruit.

Blackberries

Blackberries are more than just powerful antioxidants. They are also extremely high in some of the highest forms of chronic disease and cancer-fighting compounds: vitamins C, E, and ellagic acid.

Known as nature's candy, wild raspberries have been gathered for consumption by humans for thousands of years. With their rich color, sweet juicy taste, and antioxidant power, it is no wonder raspberries remain one of the world's most consumed berries. A high consumption of plant foods, such as raspberries, appears to decrease the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and overall mortality. It can also promote a healthy complexion, increased energy, and overall lower weight.

Physalis is a good source of nutrients, minerals, vitamins.

Physalis Physalis (Cape gooseberry) is native to South America in the high altitude tropical Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile where the fruits are found growing wild. Apart from their taste, Physalis is a good source of nutrients, minerals, vitamins. It is loaded with Viamin B1 (Thiamin). This vitamin is liable for the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter which transmits messages towards the muscles and nerves.

Introducing

LITTLE PLUGGER The 2-in-1 garden tool designed to make your life much easier when weeding and planting bulbs in lawns and grassy areas.

BRITISH MADE

BULB PLANTER

Bulb planting in your lawn or grassy areas has never been easier. With the Little Plugger, there is hardly any bending, saving the backache you would normally experience. Easy to use and quick to operate, this method will save you time and effort and since the same soil goes back into the same hole it came from, you will see little or no obvious disturbance, leaving you an almost seamless planting. For bulbs up to 2 inches (51mm) diameter.

WEEDING MADE IT EASY

The weeding operation is also easy. Simply remove the offending weed in your lawn by the Little Plugger method, then eject the soil plug from the device, turn it upside down and re-insert it into the same hole. This way the weed is upside down, 4 inches (approx. 102mm) deep and the weed will die. You are now left with a 2 inch (51 mm) diameter soil area which will allow the surrounding grass to grow back over it.

No hole left to fill! No weed to dispose of! No fuss!

01488 658 709

“Some time ago, I had to plant 3,000 Crocus bulbs into my lawn and my engineering background enabled me to come up with the simple, time and energy saving idea of the Little Plugger. It also saved me from the backache that I would have had without it!” Roy Green - Inventor

It can be a real challenge to get onto the property ladder. However there is help on hand with the Help to Buy scheme. There are two parts to the scheme – the Help to Buy equity loan and the Help to Buy ISA which the Governments tops up by 25% when you come to buy your house.

Help to Buy The Help to Buy equity loan

Help to Buy ISA

This scheme is only available on newbuild properties that have a purchase price of up to £600,000. It is available to both first time buyers and existing home owners, but the property you buy must be your only residence and is not available to buy to let investors.

A Help to Buy Individual Savings Account (ISA) is a high-interest savings account available for people buying their first property and is available at most high street banks and building societies.

You only need a 5% deposit and the government will lend you up to 20%. You will need to apply for a mortgage from a commercial lender for the remaining 75%. For the first five years you will pay no interest, but after that it will cost 1.75% of the outstanding balance each following year.

You can earn up to 2.53% interest taxfree and then the Government will add 25% free cash on top of what you save providing you and the property you purchase meet the qualifying criteria You will need to make an initial deposit of £1,000. After that you can deposit a maximum of £200 a month.

The ISA can be used for a property with a full market value of up to £250,000 or up to £450,000 in London. Book for a tour of Shaw House The story of Shaw House begins with the Dolman family, and their ambitions to move from industry into the realms of the landed gentry. They are thought to have originally come from Pocklington in Yorkshire, settling in Newbury in the 15th century.

Shaw House is famous for its reputation as Kings Charles I’s headquarters during the Second Battle of Newbury, located at Shaw, on the north-eastern outskirts of Newbury in Berkshire.

Bug Hotel e as help the be to y a w t a re Ag your r insects in well as othe a make them to is n e rd a g ilt home. pur pose-bu

Bug homes come in all shapes and sizes, from multi-level community apartments suitable for accommodating a wide variety of insects like ladybirds, lacewings and beetles, to individual houses for solitary, solo bees. A great way to build one is to use objects found in the garden.

Large hotel Ideal equipment : Wooden pallets Broken bricks and tiles Broken plant pots Corrugated cardboard Drainpipes Logs & twigs Rotting wood Dry leaves Bark Hollow plant stems, or bamboo Straw and hay With a large multi-story building, the aim is to recreate the small burrowing places that insects love. You may also find that, due to its size, it also attracts other creatures such as toads and hedgehogs, who are always on the look-out for a warm place to stay.

Lay a foundation of bricks in a rough square, the same size as one of your pallets, leaving gaps in between. One at each corner will do.

2 3 4 5 6 7

Scatter some dead leaves, woodchips and soil in the middle to attract frogs.

Lay a pallet or strips of wood across the bricks to make a base for your first layer. Place some logs on top and then a few roll of hollow stems or bamboo. Put some straw and hay or wood chippings or pine cones in between. Keep going like this, adding one layer one top of another until it’s as high as you want. When you’ve reached the very top, make the structure waterproof, by laying some roofing felt or a sheet of polythene over it, as you would a garden shed.
