Welcome

to our Christmas Edition!

As we approach Christmas and the end of 2018, let’s reflect upon our actions and learn from our mistakes. Being kind, loving and respectful isn’t just during Christmas! The prayer of St Francis reminds us just how we can do that! I am not religious, but this is such an encouraging and uplifting prayer that teaches us how we can serve those around us and put their needs first. Why not pick one of the sentences below from St Francis prayer and make it into a daily task? : ) Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace!

The Origins of Christmas

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from everyone at Local Buzz! Thank you for your support in 2018 : )

That where there is hatred, I may bring love.

That where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness. That where there is discord, I may bring harmony. That where there is error, I may bring truth.

That where there is doubt, I may bring faith.

That where there is despair, I may bring hope.

That where there are shadows, I may bring light. That where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

Recently the Pre School has been hit by government funding cuts and was ready to close its doors for the last time. Thanks to community funding the Pre-School can now stay open and with the continued support of Mr Manj Mahal of Infinity Fire Prevention Ltd the Pre-school will be revamped and continue to provide high quality care, where children are ready to learn and ready for life. The Tomlin Fountain The unveiling ceremony took place on 5th July 1911. The fountain stood unaltered until 1939 when a public lavatory was built adjoining it. By 1969 the fountain and facilities were no longer adequate and were demolished to make way for new facilities.

Ann Jenkins was born in 1832 in Thatcham to William and Ann Jenkins. William worked as a farmer and farrier at Waterside Farm in Thatcham. He was so good as a farrier he became known as Dr Jenkins. Ann married Stephen Tomlin and together they moved to Hall Court Farm in Midgham. Shortly after the death of her husband in 1869, Ann moved back to Thatcham living at a property in Station Road. She purchased Sydney Lodge in 1890 for £755 but appears to have not lived there initially and rented it out to one of the local surgeons. By 1911 though she was living at Sydney Lodge with at least one servant. In 1911, a proposal to mark the Coronation of King George V at a Thatcham Parish meeting was put

To find out more contact us via email enquiries@ thatchamhistoricalsociety. org.uk or visit our website thatchamhistoricalsociety.org.uk forward. The proposal was to install a drinking fountain in the Broadway, or Broad Street as it was then known. The majority of those at the council meeting though thought it was too ambitious. That is until Mrs Ann Tomlin offered to pay for it.

Best in Business Awards

Dynamic and Innovative

I attended the annual Best in Business Awards evening at Newbury Racecourse last month which is always an inspiring event, showcasing the energy and enterprise of the West Berkshire business sector.

Did you know that just seven per cent of engineering graduates are female? We must do more to encourage our youngsters, especially girls, to consider it as a career option - and I had the pleasure of co-hosting the Festival of Engineering to do exactly that with my friend and colleague Richard Benyon MP at Xtrac, Thatcham where they make parts for F1 cars.

There were awards given, amongst other categories, for best independent retailer (the Hare and Hounds at Speen), the best rural business (The Fox at Peasemore), the best entrepreneur (Alison Huntley from Tigers Day Nursery) and the Best Small Business award which this year was won by Market Place restaurant, The Sushi Maki.

The Fox at Peasemore

Small business, and in particular retail, was an important theme at this year’s Newbury Vision conference, with plans revealed for the future of the Kennet Centre. I was pleased to see that nine small retail units have been planned for the new Market Street scheme with developer Grainger inviting independent businesses to come forward now with any ideas. The first Saturday in December is always Small Business Saturday which is a chance for us all to support the small ‘indie’ businesses that make such a contribution to our high streets and I hope that the busy Christmas season, together with the promised cut in business rates in the autumn Budget, will mean a prosperous 2019 for those businesses in Newbury. Rt Hon Richard Benyon MP for Newbury

Over 400 children attended the event and I saw real talent and excitement as they met some of the area’s worldleading businesses and tried their hand at building and making things. Our region is already a hub for dynamic and innovative manufacturing, from machine parts for submarines and fighter jets to advanced lasers, and it was incredible to see the range of apprenticeships and opportunities they offer. These will be vital if we want our regional and national economies to thrive. We must build our talent pool and make these vibrant and rewarding careers easy to access for our youngsters.

If you’re studying in North West Hampshire, considering your career options and you like designing and building things, I urge you to give science, technology and engineering serious consideration. The future will be in your hands.

The Benefits of Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and socialise whilst keeping active. It allows you to connect with your community and make it a better place. It can also be of great benefit to you, allowing you to gain career experience, learn valuable new skills or to perhaps increase your self-confidence. Basingstoke Volunteer Centre can help you find the answers to what, where, when and how to volunteer. We work with many local voluntary, community and charitable organisations that are in need of volunteers in order to fulfil their mission and help the people and communities in Basingstoke and Deane. We maintain a database of volunteering opportunities in the borough and North Hampshire. You can search and apply for roles that suit what you are looking for via www.volunteernorthhants.org. Alternatively you can visit our drop-in session in the Basingstoke Discovery Centre in the Town Centre held on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Tuesday of each month from 9.45 – 11.45. We also offer one-to-one appointments, either in person or over the telephone, giving you the chance to tell us about your own interests. To book an appointment, register roles for Charities or Voluntary Organisations or ask any questions, you can contact us at vc@bvaction.org.uk or phone 01256 423850, www.bvaction.org.uk. We are open Monday to Friday, 9.30 – 2.30 and are based at The Orchard in White Hart Lane, RG21 4AF alongside the Civic Offices. Does your Business want to become more involved in Volunteering?

Many businesses allow their employees to take 1 or 2 days a year paid time to carry out volunteering within the community; there are many benefits to the employees, the company and the Voluntary Sector. Companies can register interest for Group Volunteering projects also via vc@bvaction.org.uk.

Christmas Mince Pie Brownies Combine two favourites in this clever mash-up of brownies and mince pies. These sweet treats will prove a big hit throughout the festive season.

Marmalade Glazed Roast Duck Try roast duck as an easy alternative to the usual turkey dinner on Christmas Day. A sticky Seville orange and marmalade glaze makes it even more festive.

Take the stress out of Christmas with these easy yet scrumptious festive food ideas!

Christmas Salted Caramel Yule Log Treat your Christmas party guests to a salted caramel yule log or bûche de Noël, decorated with redcurrants. It makes a great centrepiece dessert.

One of the earliest references to a ‘Marmelet of Oranges’ comes from a recipe book written by Eliza Cholmondeley in 1677.

Panforte Enjoy this honeyed Tuscan dessert with candied peel at the end of a meal with sweet wine or coffee, or wrap up and give as a homemade Christmas gift. The origins date back to the crusaders who discovered it in Turkey. The soldiers used this staple on their long marches as it kept well due its excessive honey based content. Honey was abundant in Turkey and in the Middle East and formed part of the Turkish delight and other desserts. 21

Ideal dessert menu wines for Christmas The Christmas meal is well and truly consumed. Everyone is starting to feel more stuffed than the turkey they just ate. Now it’s time for the “pièce de résistance” – your marvellous dessert – what everyone is here for right? This year instead of serving just the regular tea and coffee, give your guests a touch of something they will rave about for months to come. Make your dessert experience unforgettable with an addition of a lovely dessert wine. A good sweet wine can really enhance the afterdinner experience. While some can be enjoyed on their own, dessert wines are best when paired with food, and using the wine to enhance the dessert and vice versa can lead to some pretty mind-blowing combinations. While there are many dessert wines here are but a few suggestions to get your guests talking.

One of the most significant categories is fortified wines. These are made by adding grape spirit (brandy) to a wine either during or after fermentation. The most well known are sherry and port. Two of my favourties are Gran Barquero Oloroso PX and a lovely Sandeman Vintage Porto. Try serving these with a mixed aged cheese platter and crackers and of course with the Christmas pudding. These will be high in alcohol and usually highly sweet although sherries can be very dry so don’t assume any sherry will do. One of my favourite wines is a late harvest or “noble rot” sweet wine. Don’t be put off by the “rot” as it is not really rot. They are grapes that have been exposed to a fungus

called botrytis that causes the moisture to be extracted leaving a raisiny type grape with just the sweet sugars resulting in a lovely tasting sweet wine. Two common types are Riesling and what is arguable the world’s greatest sweet wine, Sauternes. Either of these will go nicely served with cheesecake crème caramel or even strawberries and cream. But one of my new-found favourites is a Tokaji from Hungary. This wine is excellent with some black forest cake, cheesecake or crème caramel. Any of these wines will give your dessert dishes that extra flair that one wouldn’t normally expect from a Christmas dinner. Again, the main thing is to experiment and find the combinations that you enjoy the most.

So much wine – so little time! Let’s make the most of it this Christmas season.

Dr. Michael Greger M.D. FACLM

What to eat to boost immunity Do people who eat healthier actually get sick less? Those who eat more fruits and vegetables appear to have a lower risk of getting an upper respiratory tract infection like the common cold, whether they’re otherwise vegetarian or not. According to a 1968 study in the New York State Dental Journal, even just one added apple a day may help keep the doctor away. In another study, elderly people

were randomised into groups that ate either five servings of fruit and veggies a day or two servings a day. The fivea-day group showed an 80 percent improved antibody response to their pneumonia vaccination compared to the two-a-day group. Even though only 12 out of 40 people in the fivea-day group reached their target levels of servings, they still did six times better than the two-a-day group. In 1999 the British Journal of Nutrition published a study

Local Buzz is delighted to welcome Dr. Michael Greger, a physician, author and professional speaker on public health issues to share his blogs in every issue. He focuses on the best available balance of evidence from the peer-reviewed scientific literature. Both his latest books, How Not to Die and the How Not to Die Cookbook, became instant New York Times Best Sellers. 100% of all proceeds he has ever received from his books, DVDs and speaking engagements have always and will always be donated to charity.

that was conducted to determine the effect of brightly coloured vegetables on the immune system. For the first two weeks, the subjects ate basically no fruits and veggies. Then, they drank one and a half cups of tomato juice every day for two weeks, followed by two weeks of carrot juice, and then two weeks of spinach powder. Within two weeks of a fruit- and veggie-deficient diet, immune function plummeted. However, just one and a half cups of tomato juice a day brought subjects back from the ashes. It didn’t take five servings a day—just one tall glass of tomato juice produced results. The carrot juice alone didn’t seem to help as well, however, nor did the powdered equivalent of a serving of spinach. This tells me two things: how remarkably we can affect our immune function with simple dietary decisions and that not all veggies are alike. There is one family of vegetables that we definitely don’t want to miss out on. Inflammation and leaky gut can occur all because of an absence in our diet of cruciferous vegetables, including cabbage, collards, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli. To stay healthy this season, eat your veggies.

Best not wrap gifts for your dog Let them rip the paper off one gift and they might think it’s okay to do so on all of them! Also, tape, ribbons and other decorative bits can be quite harmful to dogs, so it’s best to keep them unwrapped. Your dog won’t mind!

CATS - Always keep candles out of reach of your cat. Never leave candles or fireplaces burning unsupervised.

Vomiting and diarrhoea Often it is a result of being fed too many treats or rich food. Ask visitors to refrain from feeding your pets unless they have permission and keep all festive food out of reach!

Chocolate Dark chocolate is poisonous to dogs so seek advice immediately.

Foreign body ingestion

Pets Though Christmas is a fun time for humans, even we can feel overwhelmed. For our pets, Christmas can be confusing, a bit scary and even dangerous. Here are the top reasons for emergency vet visits over the festive period and how to avoid them.

Some pets will eat anything. Christmas baubles, lights tinsel and small toys. Ask guests not to leave things on the floor and keep a watchful eye. DOGS cannot digest tree needles and they can be toxic so don’t give your dog the opportunity to have a tasting session.

CATS - Hang lights out of reach of your cat and secure loose cords so they don't dangle.

Lacerations or Bites

Soft Tissue Trauma

When family members or guests bring their pet, bear in mind your dog or cat will see this as an intrusion into their territory and some animals are very territorial indeed. Don’t leave unfamiliar animals alone together, even if they seem to be tolerating each other.

Dogs and cats can be stepped on, have things dropped on them, or be hit by cars while running around on the drive as visitors arrive. If Grandma trips over your Chihuahua BOTH might end up in casualty so keep an eye on pets.

In severe cases enmity separate rooms might be in order. If a guest brings a dog and your kids own a treasured hamster or guinea pig keep the small furry being well out of danger.

Avoid giving your dog bones from meat you have cooked, as they can split and hurt your dog. 30

Poinsettias are known for their toxicity to cats, but they tend to have only mildly toxic effects.

Christmas TIPS

Feeding a Crowd Whether it's the gradual increase in food prices over the past year or your desire to cut back on food waste, there has never been more incentive not to over cater at Christmas. But just how do you work out how much food and drink you need when you are feeding far more people than usual? We have come to the rescue. Turkey Allow approximately 500g per person. This doesn't mean that you'll get 500g of meat each, simply that to get a good portion size you need to allow this much turkey-weight per person. So, if you want to feed 8 adults your turkey should be at least 4Kg, more if you want leftovers.

Roast beef or pork If the joint is off the bone, allow 250g per serving – so 2kg for eight people. Allow 350g per serving for roasts on the bone – so around 3kg for eight.

Roasties Everyone loves roasties! Allow 250g of potatoes per person, so 2kg for eight people.

Stuffing You need to allow 100g of stuffing per person, so that’s at least 800g for eight people! With stuffing it's better to have more than run-out and it's great on turkey sandwiches later!

Carrots and other roast or steamed veg 80g - 100g is about right for any serving of vegetables, so you need 800g combined for eight people.

You don’t have to do it all. Give your creative friends the job of dressing the table.

Sprouts Unless you are a sprout-lover allow 80g per person – or 650g for eight people. If you do have any leftover they go great in bubble and squeak for boxing day brunch.

Gravy 125ml per person is enough. You can always freeze leftovers for an easy addition to midweek suppers.

Bread sauce 75ml seems to suffice because not everyone likes it, but for those that do LOVE it, allow around 600-700ml is usually enough for a small party.

Christmas pudding A 900g pudding will be plenty to feed eight.

Custard

Treat it like gravy. 125ml per person unless your family are the type that cannot stop pouring! Unfortunately, there isn't one shopping list to suit all families but this is a good basic guide; adapt it to suit your own catering preferences.

Happy Feasting! 31

Snacks for Santa Whether it is milk and a chocolate digestive or sherry and mince pie, when we leave goodies for Father Christmas, we are possibly participating in a tradition that some scholars date back to ancient Norse mythology!

The early mince pie was known by several names, including "mutton pie", "shrid pie" and "Christmas pie". Typically its ingredients were a mixture of minced meat, suet, a range of fruits, and spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg.

According to legend, Odin had an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir. Kids would leave treats for Sleipnir, hoping that Odin would favour them with gifts in return.

Did you know. . .?

In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas (the Dutch version of Santa Claus) arrives from Spain, not from the North Pole.

In Europe, before the 16th century, gifts were exchanged on December 6th, the feast of St. Nicholas.

Stockings Noddy Holder belting out, ‘Are you hanging up your stocking on the wall?’ is a Christmas tradition. There is no official explanation of why we hang socks up for Santa though. It probably derives from a tradition of leaving out hay-filled shoes on December 5, the eve of St. Nicholas’ feast day. Children would wake to discover that the hay they left for St. Nick’s donkey had been filled with treats or coins.

Origi

Chris The word “carol” comes from the Old French carole, meaning a ring dance accompanied by song, and first appears in English in the early 14th century.

Born in Patara, a land that is part of present-day Turkey, circa 280, St. Nicholas was a Christian bishop who helped the needy. 34

Carolling

You might suppose this is a centuries-old tradition but although the songs go back hundreds of years, visiting neighbours to bid them good luck and good cheer by singing for them didn’t happen until the Victorian era.

Mistletoe This was associated with fertility and vitality by Celtic Druids because it blossomed even during the most frigid winters. Quite how we got from that kissing under the mistletoe is a mystery, but we do know that it began in the 18th Century and started with guests kissing the hand of their host under the mistletoe, then became progressively more personal over the decades that followed!

Christmas Lights Thomas Edison's assistant, Edward Johnson, came up with the idea of electric lights for Christmas trees in 1882. Christmas tree lights were first mass-produced in 1890.

Eggnog

Mistletoe was associated with fertility and vitality by Celtic Druids because it blossomed even during the most frigid winters.

ins of

stmas

Historians agree that 'nog’ was probably inspired by a medieval drink called ‘posset’, a milky drink made with eggs, milk, and sometimes figs or sherry. These were all pricey ingredients, so it was a bit of status symbol to offer it to guests. No-one seems to know for sure why it’s called ‘nog’, but it maybe from the old word ‘noggin’ which was slang for a wooden cup.

The Yule Log

Christmas is all about traditions, but why do we hang stockings, eat chocolate logs and drink eggnog.

Advent Calendars The modern advent calendar with its little doors containing sweets or small gifts began with Gerhard Lang in the early 1900s. His inspiration was a calendar that his mother made for him when he was a child, featuring 24 coloured pictures attached to a piece of cardboard.

Christmas Cards The modern advent calendar with its little doors containing sweets or small gifts began with Gerhard Lang in the early 1900s. His inspiration was a calendar that his mother made for him when he was a child, featuring 24 coloured pictures attached to a piece of cardboard.

Yule logs predate Christianity. As part of winter solstice celebrations, Gaels and Celts burned logs decorated with holly, ivy and pinecones to cleanse themselves of the past year and welcome the next one. The practice changed over time and eventually edible representations of the log appeared, which is why we eat chocolate logs today!

Evergreen Decorations Before Christianity people decorated their homes with evergreens in the winter as a reminder that spring would return. Christians adopted the tradition and decorated evergreen trees with apples to represent the Garden of Eden. The practice really took off when the public learned that Queen Victoria had a decorated Christmas tree as a nod to her German husband’s heritage.

West Berkshire Homeless was formed 18 months ago to work with the rough sleeping community, assisting them in making lifestyle changes.

Changing Peoples Lives West Berkshire Homeless

The Charity has worked with over 40 individuals to help them regain documentation - such as birth certificates, National Insurance numbers and provisional driving licenses, giving them photo ID, all essential items for establishing a bank account and obtaining employment. Each individual is also assisted in finding work and accommodation. In addition West Berkshire Homeless operate and maintain two half way houses providing

accommodation for eight individuals as the ‘next steps’ to independence, three of these have already moved into private accommodation. During the winter of 2017/18 a West Berkshire Homeless operated a night shelter from November to March curtesy of the Salvation Army, from which the regular attendees transitioned into accommodation and the half way houses. For the winter of 2018/19 West Berkshire Homeless are not only working with the other voluntary sector organisations in the area but also West Berkshire Council and Two Saints to assist in providing night shelter facilities and day provision from November through to March whilst still working alongside individuals to help them transition to a new life style.

Changing peoples lives. . .

“when I came into that shelter I thought nothing could change but you taught me that by little steps I could get there - and now I am there!” “Thank you for all that you have done for me, you have helped so much to improve my life. A BIG THANK YOU.” West Berkshire Homeless are working closely with their band of volunteers from the local community and companies to help those in greatest need.

Run totally by volunteers, West Berkshire Homeless have no official funding and rely exclusively on donations from individuals and organisations - please visit www.westberkshirehomeless.co.uk for further details.

A lifetime mortgage will be secured against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

There is a mortgage for you and this is why Research by the Online Mortgage Advisor suggested 41% of Brits said that being declined for a mortgage is an embarrassing secret, worse than missing out on a promotion or a relationship ending. Not only this, 35% automatically assume they’re not eligible (especially if they’re self-employed) or don’t earn enough for a lender to approve their application. It’s hard to ignore these findings as those who presume they wouldn’t qualify, or are too scared to try due to fear of rejection, could actually be ticking all the right boxes. You just need a lender who is willing to put in the extra elbow grease to ensure those needing something a little bit special are catered for by taking the time to find the right option for each customer. That’s where we come in. Below, we’ve busted four common mortgage eligibility myths to help reassure you that your new home dream can be a reality: Affordable housing schemes are just for first-time buyers Incorrect. Affordable housing schemes such as the government’s part-rent-part-buy Shared Ownership initiative is not just for first-time buyers. The great news is that there are a variety of different ways in which house-hunters of all ages and stages in life are able to obtain a mortgage in an affordable way. Many of our customers will go through a change in personal circumstance. Whether that is in the shape of a divorce, change in employment or relocation, affordable mortgages schemes are open to everyone. You just need to read the small print as some might be restricted by area. I’m self-employed so it’s almost impossible to get a mortgage Incorrect. There are over four million self-employed people in the UK, 15% of the workforce, as the desire to be your own boss continues to boom. If you have a varied income or lack three years’ worth of accounts this does not mean that you don’t meet the requirements for a mortgage. Some lenders will still review your application, especially if you can prove a track record of regular work as well as any work lined up for the future.

Incorrect. It is true some lenders may be reluctant to lend to older borrowers, however, this shouldn’t put you off applying. The key is to be able to prove that you have adequate income to support the mortgage after retirement. You might also need to provide proof of regular income in the shape of pensions, investments and buy-to-lets if you have any. With so many options available, lenders need to bust inaccurate myths about what it takes to obtain a mortgage. Already we’ve helped parents boost their loved ones borrowing power, divorcees starting afresh, those whose employment situation has changed or those who are relocating to an area with much higher housing prices. We’ve helped permanently employed, contractors, freelancers and the self-employed get the keys to their new home. We’ve helped the young and the old. These customers all had the same goal – to obtain a mortgage. If you’d like to talk to us about a mortgage, pop into your local branch or contact us to arrange an appointment with one of our qualified mortgage advisers. Basingstoke branch: 5-6 Chelsea House, Festival Place, Basingstoke, RG21 7JR call: 01256 816813 or email: basingstoke@newbury.co.uk. Newbury branch: 105b Northbrook Street, Newbury, RG14 1AA call: 01635 522588 or email: newbury@newbury.co.uk. Thatcham branch: 4 High Street, Thatcham, RG19 3JD call: 01635 864996 or email: thatcham@newbury.co.uk. Hungerford branch: 127 High Street, Hungerford, RG17 0DL call: 01488 684705 or email: hungerford@ newbury.co.uk YOUR MORTGAGE IS SECURED ON YOUR HOME. THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE SECURING OTHER DEBTS AGAINST YOUR HOME. YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPLAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE.

I had a small discrepancy on my credit score so I can’t borrow funds Incorrect. Something as small as a defected mobile phone payment or an innocently forgotten credit card shouldn’t be detrimental to your mortgage application. We understand sometimes things fall through the cracks, that’s why we underwrite each mortgage case individually and take into account personal circumstances before approving or declining an application. We don’t even credit score so you shouldn’t discount yourself before you’ve even tried. I’m too old for a mortgage
