Bronze & Iron Age Thatcham After the Stone Ages settlements seem to have moved away from the river toward and onto hillsides. Bronze Age (2400BC to 750BC) and Iron Age (750BC to 43AD) sites have been excavated at Dunston Park and Cooper’s Farm.
In 1986, field evaluation of Hartshill Copse by the Oxford Archaeological Unit indicated a Bronze Age cremation cemetery with later excavations showing evidence of settlements here spanning the late 2nd century BC through to the late 2nd century AD.
Excavations at Dunston Park turned up features from the Bronze Age along with an Iron Age settlement. At least one relatively large round-house was excavated along with another possible one. Scatters of flint, pottery, querns and spindle-whorls were evidence of domestic activity, food processing and textile spinning being carried on the site.
An excavation at Chamberhouse Farm produced evidence of Iron Age and Romano-British field systems in 2005 whilst further evidence of Iron Age activity locally has been found in Lower Way and also at Henwick Lane, where a gold ‘stater’ coin dating to about 50 BC was discovered.

The Bronze and Iron ages have seen people settling in the area, the development of farming and sites throughout Thatcham.

Loneliness & Isolation
Keeping our children safe online
How many of you have visited Fair Close Centre in Newbury? When that question was asked last month at the conference on Loneliness and Isolation, only a fraction of the eighty people attending raised their hands. Which, surprisingly, was a welcome result for Fair Close who kindly hosted the event and were delighted to engage with so many newcomers.
It encapsulated for me exactly what the morning was all about. So many good things are happening in our area to counter loneliness and isolation and this conference was all about sharing this information and making contacts. We heard from Josie Reed, chair of trustees at Fair Close, about the services the centre offers to the over 65s. We also heard about the Befriend West Berkshire and Village Agents schemes run by the Volunteer Centre, and from representatives of the Mortimer Village Partnership, the Bradfield Community Shop and Leckhampstead Village Hall, who spoke movingly about these community hubs and the service they provide in building those all-important social connections. From the Public Health and primary care perspective, loneliness has huge implications and it was good to learn more about the ways in which the local agencies are tackling this issue. It was an interesting and productive event, I was grateful to the VCWB and the CCB for their help in organising it and I hope the ‘conversation’ we started will continue. Rt Hon Richard Benyon MP for Newbury
As a father of three, keeping our children safe online is very important to me. There are fantastic things about the internet – it helps us connect with people and information from around the world. But it comes at a cost as we learn time and time again about the impact of social media and some of the more harmful online adult material on young people. I’ve campaigned on internet safety over the years, and last year brought Google to meet school children in the constituency to talk about how they should behave online and keep themselves safe. Across government, we are working closely with the technology industry to make the internet a safer and more responsible place. I was pleased to see some 2,000 organisations come together on the recent annual Safer Internet Day. It was a valuable tool to educate our children on how to keep themselves safe online, but also adults and carers on how they can play a role in protecting young people as well.
Village Agents in West Berkshire What is the Volunteer Village Agent service and would you like to become one? Volunteer Centre West Berkshire are recruiting and training Volunteer Village Agents to be a part of a West Berkshire wide team that provide a face to face signposting service for people living in isolation. The new ‘Buzz’ word is social prescribing where our Village Agents connect local people with services that perhaps they don’t know about or were a little reluctant to ask for. The Service receives referrals from GPs, social workers, friends, neighbours or family members, occupational therapists and local hospitals or self referrals. Following training, volunteer Village Agents provide a trusted and well-known friendly face at the heart of their communities. West Berkshire covers an area of around 272 square miles. The majority of it being rural, however even in the towns, people can feel equally isolated. Our target is to recruit another 10 Volunteer Village Agents (VVAs) in 2019 in all areas of West Berkshire and we would now like to hear from potential Volunteer Village Agents in the following areas of Newbury, Greenham, Lambourn, Burghfield, Theale, Holybrooke and Tilehurst. The Volunteer Centre runs the Village Agent service and would be pleased to hear from anyone interested in being potential volunteers or people that might like to refer someone for a visit. Village Agents are people like you, who have knowledge about your community and care enough to help make a difference.
We must take steps together to protect our children so they can learn, develop and create in a safe environment.
Please contact The Village Agent Coordinator Gill on gillian@vcwb.org.uk or call 01635 581001 for a chat about becoming involved. Garry Poulson

Books
World Book Day's mission is to give every child and young person a book of their own. It is also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading. It is the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, marked in over 100 countries. The main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading. Thanks to the generosity of National Book Tokens Ltd, publishers and booksellers, millions of book tokens are sent to schools for children and young people (some 15 million, in fact: that’s one for nearly every child aged under eighteen in the country). Using their book token they can pick one of TEN (exclusive, new and completely free) books. Or, if they’d rather, they can use it to get £1 off any book or audio book costing over £2.99 at a participating bookshop. All major supermarkets including Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and most large bookshop chains – WH Smith,
Waterstones and hundreds of independent booksellers will accept the book tokens. But to save you a wasted journey, it might be worth ringing ahead to check first.
Charles Dickens Charles Dickens is much loved for his great contribution to classic English literature. He was the quintessential Victorian author. His epic stories, vivid characters and exhaustive depiction of contemporary life are unforgettable. His own story is one of rags to riches. He was born in Portsmouth on 7 February 1812. The good fortune of being sent to school at the age of nine was short-lived because his father, inspiration for the character of Mr Micawber in 'David Copperfield', was imprisoned for bad debt. The entire family, apart from Charles, were sent to Marshalsea along with their patriarch. Charles was sent to work in Warren's blacking factory and endured appalling conditions as well as loneliness and despair. After three years he was returned to school, but the experience
was never forgotten and became fictionalised in two of his better-known novels 'David Copperfield' and 'Great Expectations'. As well as a huge list of novels, he published autobiography, edited weekly periodicals and wrote travel books. He was also a theatre enthusiast, wrote plays and performed before Queen Victoria in 1851. Books written by Dickens include : Oliver Twist – 1837 The Old Curiosity Shop – 1840 A Christmas Carol – 1843 David Copperfield – 1849 Little Dorrit – 1855

Koala As marsupials, female koalas have pouches where their young stay until fully developed. Unlike kangaroo pouches, which open towards the top, koala pouches are located towards the bottom of their bodies and open outward. The baby koala, or joey, won’t fall out of the pouch because the mother koala uses a strong sphincter muscle to keep the pouch closed.

Mum! The origins of Mother’s Day date back as early as the ancient Greek times. The ancient Greeks dedicated an annual spring festival to maternal goddesses and ancient Romans also celebrated a spring festival called Hilaria which was for a mother goddess called Cybele. Mother's Day is always the fourth Sunday of Lent, the 24-hours marks the maternal bond that exists between a mum and child, as well as other maternal figures such as grandmothers, mothers-in-law and stepmums. During the 1600s this special day was held on the fourth Sunday of Lent. It was originally a day for Christians to visit their 'mother church'.
Elephant An elephant calf weighs about 250 pounds at birth and stands about three feet tall. They cannot see very well at first, but they can recognize their mothers by touch, scent, and sound. The calves drink their mother's milk for about two years, sometimes longer.
Otter Baby otters are called pups. Newborn pups need lots of attention, and will stay close to their mum's until they've developed enough skills to go it alone - usually at 6 months. The pups can be almost as long a their mothers at birth.

Method
1
Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/ gas 6. Heat the oil in a medium pan, then fry the onion for 6-8 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute.
2
Pour in the red wine; turn up the heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes to reduce the liquid by half. Add the tomatoes, sugar, Worcester sauce and tomato purée.
3
Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until thickened. Add the basil, and season well. Place the spinach in a large pan with a knob of butter. Cover and cook over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes until the spinach has wilted. It will seem to almost disappear!

5
Spread a little of the spinach and ricotta sauce over the base of the baking dish, then cover with slightly overlapping lasagne sheets. Pour over a third of the remaining white sauce, sprinkle over a little of the grated cheese and top with half the tomato sauce. Using meat from the legs and thighs of the chicken not only gives a richer flavour, but these cuts are also much cheaper. Serve with mashed potato or new potatoes and plenty of freshly cooked veggies including spinach, peas and broccoli.

Legend has it that in the 17th century Oliver Cromwell (Lord Protector of the Commonwealth) banned eating mince pies at Christmas as he saw it as a sign of gluttony. Luckily the ban didn’t last long and we are able to enjoy the delicious pies once more.
The Cornish delicacy that features fish that stare at you Stargazy pie involves baking seven types of fish, including herring and mackerel, and a filling of eggs, potatoes and thickened milk. Whole pilchards are then arranged so their heads (and sometimes tails) emerge from a shortcrust pastry topping. The pie is traditionally cooked in the fishing village of Mousehole on 23 December to celebrate Tom Bawcock’s Eve, a day commemorating the heroic 16th-century fisherman who braved winter storms in his boat to ensure the locals didn’t go hungry over Christmas.
Pies pop-up in many a nursery rhyme Four and twenty blackbirds were baked in a pie in ‘Sing a Song of
Sixpence’, Simple Simon met a pieman in his eponymous rhyme and even Little Jack Horner stuck his thumb into a pie.
World Record The Guinness World Record for the most expensive meat pie ever sold goes to the Fence Gate Inn in Lancashire. This sold for £8195 (£1024 a slice) to eight guests on November 14, 2005. It was made from £500 worth of Japanese wagyu beef fillet, Chinese matsutake mushrooms (which are so precious, they're harvested under guard), Winter Black truffles, French Bluefoot mushrooms (sold at £200 for 1kg), gravy made from two bottles of vintage 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild wine, topped with edible gold leaf.

Pie Origins OF THE
We all love them, but have you ever wondered the where and why of pies?
The earliest reference to pies is dated back to the middle ages where Chaucer wrote a recipe for apple pie in 1381. The cook book was written for the chefs of King Richard II in the late 14th century and had numerous recipes for coffyn’s as pies were often called. The pies were often made from pastry which was just a thick paste of flour and water. It was used as a container to cook meat and vegetables together in the oven after the bread had been baked. Once cooked the contents would be served up on a dish and the pastry case thrown away. Alternatively the gravy would have been drained and eaten and then clarified butter poured in through the hole to seal the pie, rather like potted meat. This then, in the days
before refrigeration, would have been used to store the contents for eating at a later date. In the medieval banquet the discovery of the hot water crust pastry led to pies becoming the centre piece. They were often made using elaborate figurative moulds, glazed and adorned, occasionally with a stuffed animal or bird to indicate its contents, swan pie being one of the most elaborate. In the hierarchical society of the middle ages, the lord of the manor seated at the top table would be served the prime cuts of meat such as venison. The extremely lower orders seated on benches right at the back of the room would be served the entrails of the deer cooked with vegetables in a pie.
The offal of a deer is known as umble hence the term to eat ‘humble pie’, the word humble being erroneously replacing the proper word umble. The discovery of spices around the time of the crusades led to pies being made from meat and also from added dried fruit such as raisins and spices. Mince pies were said to be on the menu for the coronation banquet of King Henry V in 1413. Little by little less meat and more sweet contents were contained in the pies. Today the British eat around a billion pounds worth of pies each year. They come in all shapes and sizes with all manner of fillings.

How not to die from Kidney Disease Kidney failure may be both prevented and treated with a plant-based diet, and it’s no wonder: Kidneys are highly vascular organs. Harvard researchers found three significant dietary risk factors for declining kidney function: “animal protein, animal fat and cholesterol.” Studies show that animal protein can have a profound effect on normal kidney function, inducing hyperfiltration, increasing the workload of the kidney. In one study, the increased pressure on the kidneys goes up within only a few hours of eating tuna fish. We are not talking about adverse effects decades down the road, but within hours of it going into our mouths. What happens if, instead of having a tuna salad sandwich, you had a tofu salad sandwich with the exact same amount of protein? There’s no effect on your kidneys. Dealing with plant protein is no problem.
Dr. Michael Greger M.D. FACLM
Why does animal protein cause the overload reaction, but plant protein does not? It appears to be due to the inflammation triggered by the consumption of animal products. Indeed, a study showed that taking a powerful, anti-inflammatory drug along with that tuna fish sandwich would abolish the hyperfiltration, proteinleakage response to meat ingestion. There is also the acid load. Animal foods, such as meat, eggs, and dairy, induce the formation of acid within the kidneys, which may lead

to “tubular toxicity,” damage to the tiny, delicate, urine-making tubes in the kidney. Animal foods tend to be acid-forming—especially fish, which is the worst, followed by pork and poultry—whereas plant foods tend to be relatively neutral, or actually alkaline or base-forming to counteract the acid. Plant-based diets have been used to treat kidney disease for decades. In one study, researchers put subjects first on a conventional, low-sodium diet, which is what physicians would typically put someone with declining kidney function on, then switched them to a supplemented vegan diet, then back to the conventional diet, then the plant-based diet, and back and forth again. The chart in the study is filled with zig-zags, as if kidney dysfunction was turned on and off like a light switch, based on what was going into their mouths. For more information

A breakthrough treatment for complete pelvic floor rehabilitation By Theresa Fleetwood, Founder of Andresa Aesthetics
Natural ageing, childbirth and menopause can all lead to weak pelvic floor function, resulting in a spectrum of symptoms, including urinary leakage or incontinence. We tend to think of urinary incontinence as not being able to get to the bathroom in time, or of being unaware that we’ve “gone”, something that is termed urge incontinence, but incontinence also includes those “Oops” moments when we cough, laugh or sneeze, which is termed stress incontinence. And one thing is almost a guarantee – it will get worse with age.

Over 40% of women needlessly suffer some degree of urinary leakage Progressive deterioration of pelvic muscle tone can have a multidimensional impact on our lives. For example, sufferers may start to also suffer with anxiety because social interaction is fraught with the risk of an accident. They may avoid sports activities, or even general socialising in more severe cases, for this reason. The resultant reduction in social interaction can then spiral into depression. Intimacy is often avoided because of the risk of embarrassment; in fact, intimacy takes another knock even when it does occur because the quality of it is often reduced. Although daily pelvic floor exercises can help, it can be difficult to properly isolate the muscles effectively without the help of a physiotherapist. And even the most arduous exerciser can run into problems later in life. The next thing is, we find we’re sitting up and taking more notice of the adverts for sanitary solutions to “Oops” moments. The Government has recently been called upon to raise awareness of

incontinence and to improve treatment The Emsella could improve your quality of life in three weeks but until you see that implemented, you have to realise that it is not a cause for embarrassment to seek help. Looking after your pelvic floor is of paramount importance because it really does underpin your physical and mental well-being and therefore your quality of life.
The Emsella could improve your quality of life in three weeks The EMSELLA is a breakthrough, life-changing treatment for complete pelvic floor rehabilitation in women. It is medical-grade and non-invasive, designed to substantially improve the quality of life for women of any age suffering from any degree of urinary incontinence. It is endorsed by highly regarded gynaecologists worldwide, and it works – the results really are quite staggering. During each 28-minute session, the muscles of the pelvic floor contract over 11,000 times. Not only that, but the entire pelvic floor musculature is involved, not just the subset that can be exercised with voluntary contractions. 27

It is that time of year when we get the urge to Spring Clean
Time to declutter Clean Room-By-Room Approaching your house roomby-room is the most effective way to deep-clean your home at any time of the year, but especially in spring. Use room checklists as a springboard for deep-cleaning the areas of your home that really need extra attention.
Organise and clear the clutter One of the biggest parts of spring cleaning is getting rid of clutter that you don't need. Now is a good time to advantage of the
natural spring urge to get rid of items that are weighing you down and begin fresh with a more streamlined lifestyle.
Keep cleaning products to a minimum Resist the temptation to buy all these cleaning supplies; the real champions of spring cleaning are more basic supplies, such as a good all-purpose cleaner and microfiber cloths.
“We advise that you check carefully with your cleaning company exactly what a Spring Clean involves and entails. Ask your chosen company for an itemised list of the areas to be attended to and the actions to be completed” not all “Spring Cleans” are the same. Mike Sheene - Bright & Beautiful

Teddy, who is blind, shares the story of “Zog” by Julia Donaldson with his baby brother, using a Living Paintings Touch to See book.
Living Paintings Tactile and audio books for blind people Learning to read is a precious gift. Books help children to develop their speech, aid concentration and open up a magical world of characters and imagination, creating a lifelong love of stories. Imagine a world where the child cannot see words or pictures. Every 15 minutes someone new is told that they will lose their sight, including four children every day. We often take our sight for granted but there are over two million blind and partially sighted people living in the UK today. It is a devastating diagnosis, leaving parents uncertain as to how their child can join in with story time at nursery, follow school work with their sighted classmates, and make friends. Living Paintings reaches these blind and partially sighted children by making well known stories and educational resources accessible for them. Our Touch to See books are designed to be shared. They include raised, tactile images, Braille inserts and engaging audio descriptions so that the senses of touch and sound combine and our visual world comes to life.
Being told my little baby boy was blind was heartbreaking. I felt the special time of laughter and hugs over bedtime stories was being stolen from us. Living Paintings changed all that. The feely pictures are hand-painted and the library run by wonderful volunteers who donate their time and skills.

The simple act of sharing a book can bring so much pleasure and it costs us £5 per child per month to provide as many books for free via our postal library. Whether you are able to give a donation or give of your time, next time you share a book with a child, please think of Living Paintings and our books that reveal stories to blind and partially sighted children.

Add structure to your outside space by using an inspiring mix of materials to create paths, walls and raised beds.
Garden View This month we are looking at inspiriational landscaping
Be
Creative with
your outside space Paving and aggregates to decking and decorative edging – will add texture, character and structure, leading the eye through the landscape. The best time to redesign your space is in winter when plants are dormant.
If you do not have the time or inclination for a major overhaul, then it is well worth employing a professional landscape designer.
Re-designing your garden is an exciting prospect. There are many things to consider; do you wish for somewhere to relax and entertain or a specific play area for the kids? There’s no shortage of hard landscaping styles, from rustic to sleek and modern. In general, hard landscaping tends to be the star of contemporary designs, and the range of materials for such spaces is more extensive – mirror, metal, concrete and painted walls. Landscaping ideas start with good research. Take inspiration by visiting garden centres, public gardens and your
friend's gardens to get a feel of what you like and what you think will work for your space. Take into account your garden shape and size, what can be moved and what has to stay. Think about what you need your garden to do for you. Take to the drawing board to sketch your ideas and make mood boards from magazines and Pinterest of your dream garden landscape. Considerations to include : l
Hedges and fences
l Lawns l Paths
and patios
l Planting:
trees, shrubs, pots
Zoning areas (dining, playing, shading)

Happy Planning! 39
To be fit and healthy you need to be physically active. Riding your bicycle regularly is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
A good muscle workout – cycling uses all the major muscle groups as you pedal.
Wheels!
two Cycling is a healthy, low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to older adults. It is also fun, cheap and good for the environment. Riding to work or the shops is one of the most time-efficient ways to combine regular exercise with your everyday routine. An estimated one billion people ride bicycles every day – for transport, recreation and sport.
Cycling for health and fitness It only takes two to four hours a week to achieve a general improvement to your health, cycling is: Low impact – it causes less strain and injuries than most other forms of exercise. A good muscle workout – cycling uses all the major muscle groups as you pedal. As intense as you want – cycling can be done at very low intensity to begin with, if recovering from injury or illness, but can be built up to a demanding physical workout. 40
A fun way to get fit – the adventure and buzz you get from coasting down hills and being outdoors means you are more likely to continue to cycle regularly, compared to other physical activities that keep you indoors or require special times or places.
Obesity and weight control
Cycling is a good way to control or reduce weight, as it raises your metabolic rate, builds muscle and burns body fat. If you are trying to lose weight, cycling must be combined with a healthy eating plan. Cycling is a comfortable form of exercise and you can change the time and intensity – it can be built up slowly and varied to suit you. Research suggests you should be burning at least 2,000 calories a week through exercise. Steady cycling burns about 300 calories per hour. If you cycle twice a day, the calories burnt soon add up. British research shows that a half-hour bike ride every day will burn nearly five kilograms of fat over a year.
Electric Bikes
As an alternative to conventional cycling many people are turning to electric bikes, not only for leisure purposes but also as an efficient and green form of transport. Electric bikes, or ebikes, are not mopeds – the motor only works when you are pedalling, so you still get exercise but you can ride further, faster and hills are much less of a challenge.
Provided the motor is no more than 250W and the assistance stops at 15.5mph, ebikes are considered ordinary bikes, so no licence, MOT or insurance is required. A helmet is recommended but is not compulsory. Velospeed Electric Bikes have a wide range of models, from city ebikes to full suspension mountain ebikes, all of which can be tested on roads, tracks and hills around Yattendon showroom. Appointments are not necessary so find out what assisted cycling is all about.

If you are involved in a collision you can prove that it was not your fault by submitting the camera footage as evidence.
Dash Cams The dashboard camera, or dash cam, has become increasingly popular recently. So, should you think about buying one? A dash cam is a special camera that is mounted on a car dashboard for the purpose of recording sounds and images while you're driving. But why might you want one? First-hand evidence in case of a car accident
This is the main reason why people invest in one. If you are involved in a collision you can prove that it was not your fault by submitting the camera footage as evidence. It's a compelling reason for buying one.
Reporting a dangerous driver
Sometimes you see a driver do something so reckless and irresponsible right in front of you that you fear for the safety of other road-users. Reporting that person becomes much easier with evidence. 42
Extra insurance for parents
We worry when our teens first start to borrow the car that they may not stick to the rules of the road. Knowing that there is a dash cam monitoring their driving behaviour is an extra incentive for them to pay attention, or they might not be trusted to take the car out again!
It is not all about the car! Check out online videos of dash cams capturing unexpected phenomena. A group of ducks stopping traffic. . .
Sometimes you see a driver do something so reckless and irresponsible right in front of you that you fear for the safety of other road-users. Reporting that person becomes much easier with evidence.
Prevention of insurance claim scams
Insurance fraud is a growing problem with vehicles. Some drivers purposely cause minor car accidents in order to put the blame on the other party, so they can extort money from the victim. The victim has no way of proving their innocence, so these people also fake injuries in order to collect the insurance money from their insurance companies. A dash cam will at least allow you to prove that you were not at fault in such a case.
It keeps an eye on your car while you are not in it!
Have you ever returned to your car in a car park to find it has been scratched? Or are you sure the neighbour's children are scraping their bikes along the side of your vehicle when they squeeze past on the drive? A well-installed dash camera can efficiently record such events because most can be set to record even when the car engine isn't running. Some can even send all the data to your laptop or smart phone remotely, giving you peace of mind.
Because the best camera is the one you have with you
It is not all about the car! Check out online videos of dash cams capturing unexpected phenomena. A family of ducks stopping traffic in Birmingham, a plane crashing right in front of a guy driving down a highway and one Russian car driver’s dash camera recorded an enormous meteor that flew over Russia. The clip ended up being viewed millions of times on YouTube!

Why we should be your Shared Ownership mortgage lender of choice Are you a first-time buyer looking to step onto the property ladder or have you previously owned a home but can’t afford to buy one now? Maybe you’re an existing Shared Ownership customer looking to move? If so, Shared Ownership may be a great option for you. But, how does it work and why should you come and talk to us about a mortgage? What does ‘Shared Ownership’ actually mean? Shared Ownership doesn’t mean a ‘shared property’ in the sense you have to live with another person; you buy a share of between 25 and 75 percent of a brand new property in a desirable location across the UK. You only need a small mortgage and you pay a reduced rent on the remaining share to a housing association. Your deposit can be as little as 5% of the share you are purchasing. Can buyers increase their ownership? The benefit of Shared Ownership is that you can buy a percentage share of the overall value of the house and you can buy more of the property when you can afford it – this is called staircasing. For example, you can start with 25% then, if financials fit, purchase a further 5% (or 10% depending on your housing association), and so on. This means your rent will reduce. Is the mortgage application process different to that of standard residential mortgages? In short, no. For example, once the housing association assesses your eligibility for Shared Ownership you can proceed with arranging a mortgage with us and proceed with the standard legal process. Which regions does Newbury Building Society accept applications from? We may have branches in Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire, but we lend throughout England and Wales. Our affordable housing specific mortgages are not postcode restricted. First-time buyers can be nervous about the buying process – how does Newbury Building Society help their customers? We have been helping local people step onto the housing ladder for over 160 years and we are known as a ‘lending veteran’ with over fifteen years of experience in affordable housing mortgage lending. We guarantee you will always be able to speak to a person, not a computer. We understand buying a property and obtaining a mortgage can be an exciting, and sometimes daunting, experience - especially if you’re a first-time buyer or new to the property market. That’s
why all our mortgage advisers are CeMAP (Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice) qualified, and committed to speaking to you in a clear and concise language. How does Newbury Building Society judge firsttime buyer mortgage applications? The first step (and most important) is to simply talk to us. When you decide to purchase a property through Shared Ownership you will want to know what your mortgage options are. We try to simplify the whole process from your initial enquiry all the way through until you move into your new home. Are Newbury Building Society’s Shared Ownership mortgages just for first-time buyers? Shared Ownership is not just first-time buyers, thus, neither are our mortgages. We regularly help divorcees starting afresh, those whose employment situation has changed and those looking to relocate to an area with much higher housing prices, to name only a few different circumstances. We believe everyone has the right to own their home and as a mutual organisation owned by its members, we will continue on making what might seem impossible, possible. How can prospective borrowers contact the Society? Our mortgage advisers are available from Mondays to Saturdays and we offer a free, no obligation meeting to discuss your needs. To get in contact you can visit us in branch to book an appointment or submit an online contact us form on our website and we will contact you directly. Visit our Basingstoke, Hungerford, Newbury and Thatcham branch, call: 01635 555777 or visit newbury.co.uk

Take a break when you need it
Travel offers a time for people to relax and unwind. Sadly, many people do not take a break, often putting work and other responsibilities before their health and wellness. A break once a year is good for the soul and will help you discover a new place.
UK residents made 6.5 million visits overseas in October 2018, the same as in October 2017.*

2
Travel within your means
In an age where social media defines the types of places we visit, many travellers get into debt to see those luxury places. Travellers should create a budget to curb their spending habits. There are local and international places that offer gorgeous backdrops and it does not cost an arm and a leg.
travel tips everyone should follow The prospect of travel can be exciting. Not only does one get to anticipate the trip months before, but it also makes for a great escape for those yearning a change of scenery for a few days.
3
Try not to plan holidays with a full itinerary
Part of a holiday means ‘me time’. However, many travellers spend more time sightseeing and tours, which leaves little time for rest. When planning a holiday, try to add a few hours to rest, relax and even indulge in a spa
4
Make local travel a priority
If you are in search of a new place to travel, why not start within your country? Many travellers are swapping international holidays for local attractions.
UK residents spent ÂŁ4.2 billion on visits overseas in October 2018, 11% more than in October 2017.* *Office for National Statistics

LinkedIn launched a re-vamp of LinkedIn Groups which aimed to restore the platform's groups functionality back to its former glory. Once a key part of the broader social marketing landscape, LinkedIn groups eventually became so clogged with spam and junk that many turned into impenetrable swamps of self-promotion. But LinkedIn saw opportunity to fix this, and has since been working on its do-over of groups which, ideally, will eventually bring users back. But the platform's initial updates on this front were fairly minor. The main focus was, rightly, on the way in

which LinkedIn sent group members notifications, but functionally, there wasn't any major changes, other than improving the integration with the main mobile app. But even those minor changes have had an impact - recently, LinkedIn has reported that member engagement within groups has more than doubled since the re-launch, part of the broader trend of increased on-platform engagement. And with that, LinkedIn has also announced a new set of updates for groups, aimed at keeping that momentum going and encouraging more groups use.
Here are some quick fire tips that Abi hopes you will find useful
1
Always have your CV reviewed by someone you trust, it's much more likely they will spot any mistakes.
2
Ensure your CV or job advert has the relevant contact details to ensure swift follow up!
3
Ask questions - be consistent and show a genuine interest (on both sides!)
Openingz - offering extensive experience in recruitment
4
Be thorough in your interview ask about successes and failures - why decisions were made - it will inspire confidence that they are joining a professional firm who values the importance of getting to know YOU, not just what your CV says about you!
5
Always take the time to re-evaluate what you need if someone leaves; don't rush the process as this will end up costing more in lost time and productivity!

BuzzConnect was created to bring people together and we believe that there should be no exclusions, no long-term contracts and no “performance pressure” such as speaking to the room and giving a 2-minute introduction about your company.
