local volunteers A Happy New Year to all the residents, businesses and visitors to Thatcham and of course to all our amazing volunteers in Thatcham Vision. I hope it’s been a wonderful festive season for you and you’ve had a chance to relax. Many people will now be thinking back to what they did in 2016 and wondering what 2017 will have to offer. Did you achieve even half of what you wanted to? Is there a nagging feeling that you want to achieve more with life than just the 9 to 5, maybe ‘give something back’ or even just try something new? These are just some of the reasons that our volunteers have given for why they love to lend us their skills, enthusiasm and passion. I say lend because they really do get so much back from the experience. Thatcham Vision is a not-for-profit community group made of about 50 local volunteers. We exist to implement projects to improve life in the town, covering all sorts of areas such as transport, childcare, senior citizens, sports, adult learning, community safety and leisure & culture. If you’re tempted to find out more then take a look at the website and get in touch. You might change your life! st By David Conque

Thatcham Vision is calling for more volunteers to help with community projects. For more information www.thatchamvision.net and residents are encouraged to follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

EXCITING YEAR 2017 promises to be an exciting year for the local West Berks Chamber. February will see the launch of a new website for the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce which will include specific pages for the local Chambers. Members will have the opportunity to not only promote their businesses but also provide business content to encourage interaction between member companies. The Chamber Council will have a new look with a revised Vision statement – their activity will drive campaigns to encourage both new member recruitment and retention. Additional resource will be recruited to provide a focus on West Berkshire and a new events calendar will seek to bring together member and non-member businesses to exchange best practice and create new contacts.

Be Benign to your Bank! Are you considering a New Year's Resolution? Why not say say nice things to your Local Bank Branch employees and tell them how much you appreciate them (even better write a letter or email)? Why? Bank Head Offices (and the media seem to accept) that it is your fault they are closing branches because you don't want or use these Branches. In my experience and that of colleagues, also former bank employees this is not true. It is the removing of managers and advisors, then instructing staff to tell you to use the cash machine, telephone a call centre or go online instead of talking person to person that their usage has lessened.

Rosemary Appeal renal dialysis and cancer care in West Berkshire

BURY, INTERIOR RENDERS

TING AREA

An exciting new project has been launched for an extension at West Berkshire Community Hospital to build and equip a ground floor renal dialysis unit and, on the first floor, a centre for cancer and other advanced illnesses, chemotherapy and IV therapies. A room for a CT scanner is also being built. The appeal is run by Newbury & District Cancer Care Trust (NDCCT) and Newbury & Thatcham Hospital Building Trust (NTBHT). Dialysis patients currently have to spend all day, three days a week, travelling and being treated. Likewise people needing chemotherapy have to travel to hospitals elsewhere. This leaves people feeling exhausted and affects family life. NDCCT as part of their service to cancer patients have a team of drivers who at the moment make 1000 trips every year to hospitals as far afield as London, Oxford, Bristol and Southampton. The new Day Centre will have much better facilities for treatment and support. The CT scanner will enable early diagnosis and better monitoring of ongoing illness. The support of the community is vital if the ÂŁ4.5M target is to be reached. We have had support from some major sponsors but support from local 6

organisations and people our community is vital. People can help by, for example, arranging an event like a coffee morning, running a marathon, climbing a mountain, etc in aid of the appeal.

Mental Health A new local initiative to help tackle the rising mental health problems in Berkshire is being led across the county by Newbury MP Richard Benyon in collaboration with the BBC. Richard has already written to his Berkshire wide MP colleagues to get behind this initiative, including Teresa May and has had a positive response. Brighter Berkshire: A year of mental health will see local schools, colleges, universities, businesses, sport, art, NHS, Councils and the Voluntary Sector come together with efforts to have a big conversation about mental health over the year through connected and shared activities. The idea sprung from a group of local people convinced that a big positive awareness

raising campaign which makes it comfortable for everyone to get involved, will have a significant impact. Raising awareness will reduce stigma and help people get the support they need when they need it. It should also as a result, help raise donations

for the many local charities currently struggling at the moment with current demand. One of the first tasks will be delivered by students by Activate Learning in Reading College who will spend time to understand more about mental health and help design the logo for the year for its January launch. The art department also intends to run their main project on mental health and run a public exhibition.

World Braille day is celebrated on 4th January each year

World Braille Day World Braille day is celebrated on 4th January each year. It marks the birthday of the inventor of the tactile code, Louis Braille. The day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of issues facing the blind and partially sighted, and to encourage the continued production of materials in Braille. Louis created Braille at the age of 15 in 1824. He had been blinded in an accident at the age of 3.

things I didn’t know before I read local Buzz magazine

Braille is a series of bumps and indentations on a page which represent letters and numbers. It is used for reading and writing by the blind and visually impaired. The code is arranged in small rectangular blocks known as cells with raised dots in a 3 x2 pattern. Louis was inspired to create Braille after a visit to his school by the army captain Charles Barbier who demonstrated a military code known as night writing. Night writing was

a series of dots and dashes which soldiers used to send and receive messages at night without speaking, It wasn’t until 2 years after Louis’s death that Braille was adopted as the official communication system for blind people in France. It is now used on a global scale and was officially recommended in the UK from 1870 by an organisation which became the Royal National Institute of Blind People.

Size doesn’t matter A minority of small employers are failing to act on warnings from the Pensions Regulator. Automatic enrolment has changed the UK workplace forever, more than six million people have started to save via a workplace pension as a result of automatic enrolment, with more to come between now and February 2018. As an experienced adviser in this area the first questions I ask are: As a business owner do you know what’s expected of you? Do you know what you must have in place for your workers and by when?

Auto-enrolment makes it compulsory for employers to automatically enrol their eligible workers into a pension scheme. Almost all employers are affected. An important exception is a company with only a single employee who is also a director. The range of employers affected therefore runs from multinational companies to a family which employs a nanny. Every employer has a ‘staging date’ – the date that their automatic enrolment duties come into effect. Since January 2016, many firms with fewer than 30 employees have passed their ‘staging date’, increasing the number of employers with auto-enrolment duties by thousands at a time. For the first time ever, small companies are obliged by law to pay into staff pensions. Consequently, the Pensions Regulator is reporting that it is having to flex its muscles more often to ensure that these responsibilities are met. Every few months it releases its Compliance and Enforcement Quarterly Bulletin, which reports on

20% of working mums felt pushed out of a job by a lack of flexible working options. Employees have a right to ask for flexible working; Employers don’t have an obligation to grant it. Are employers missing out on a talented section of the workforce?

request refused. Is this legal? It obviously doesn’t help the mum’s involved, but does it help the business?

The latest bulletin, covering 1 July to 30 September 2016, shows that the regulator issued 3,728 Fixed Penalty Notices to employers for failing to meet their duties.

Fine time Some organisations have contested their fines, claiming that their non-compliance was unintentional and that they had a ‘reasonable excuse’. The circumstances that employers are citing in their defence include confusion between the employer and the payroll administrator as to who is supposed to be doing what; illness; and staff shortages. However, the regulator says in its report that, in the eyes of the law, these reasons are not sufficient to avoid a fine. There are potential penalties of up to £10,000 a day for employers who fail to implement auto-enrolment. Many companies value the expertise of an adviser or accountant who can look at their particular circumstances and recommend solutions.

For a no obligation discussion please contact Andy Street on 07767 081051 Email andrew_street@sjpp.co.uk . www.andrewstreetwm.co.uk

Should new working mums be Newbury’s employers’ flexible friends?

A recent national survey of 2,000 women found that almost one in five working mums felt they had been pushed out of work due to having a flexible working

instances of when it has had to use its powers to enforce the rules.

The first thing to stress is that there is no obligation on employers to grant a flexible working request, as long as they consider it in a reasonable manner. We know how tough it can be running a small business, and if the numbers don’t add up, then employers are well within their rights to refuse a request. However, all employees do have a right to request flexible working if they have been employed for 26 weeks or more. So what is a reasonable manner for considering a request? Guidance includes weighing up its advantages and disadvantages, discussing the request with the employee in a meeting

hrdept.co.uk

and offering an appeal process. If an employer ignores this guidance an employee may have a case at an employment tribunal. However, there is a lot to be said for flexible working. Sometimes, it just might not be practicable, but on other occasions it may allow you to match resource to peak demand efficiently; make for calmer, happy and unstressed employees, or simply help keep talent in the business. Clearly some companies recognise these benefits – in the same survey 10% of women described their job as extremely flexible. Flexible working is one of those areas when a balance between good oldfashioned people management plus thinking outside the box can reap dividends for employer and employee alike. If you would like specific advice and guidance on this and other aspect of people management please get in touch - Katie Aldridge 01635 613040.

There are numerous ways that a business can use video to heighten brand awareness and increase sales.

The power of video case studies Although many companies run successful and very profitable video marketing campaigns most of them are missing out on an often overlooked and untapped resource.

Video Case Study interviews featuring existing satisfied customers offer a very powerful and convincing marketing tool. People who have been delighted by your product or service and have had a genuinely positive experience are usually only too pleased to sit in front of a camera and tell their story. Featuring written testimonials and text based case studies on your website is all very well but to actually see and hear people sharing their experiences is far more convincing. At the end of the day it is all about building trust and credibility with potential customers.

We now live in a multi-contact world, where people choose which way to stay in touch with family, friends and colleagues. So why do businesses fail to make use of the same options to contact customers?

Calling all channels Telephone directories were once considered as a major marketing channel. Now there are multiple ways to get your company’s profile in front of your audience. . . l

. . . the list increases all the time. Staying in touch with customers or finding the best way to secure new customers has always been an ongoing challenge for businesses.

Using a single route to market would be considered madness in our modern marketing era. Integrated campaigns launched across multiple channels allow you to stay at the forefront of consumers’ minds. Moreover, using these to target specific consumer demographics or groups is not only possible but seen by many marketers as the way forward.

Choice Consumers now have myriad ways to discover the products or services they want to buy. Ensuring they find yours inevitably means utilising the range of platforms

They want to see proof from unbiased sources that dealing with you will be a positive experience. Many of my clients see the value in this. One of them even went to the expense of flying me to Belfast to film an interview with a valued client who was a real evangelist of their brand. Case studies don’t have to be long and drawn out. In fact, shorter is better. They can be filmed very easily with a smartphone if necessary and require very little editing. With over five million albums sold to date, Corinne Bailey Rae has had a stellar decade in the music industry. With a new album out, she spoke to The Breeze’s Lucy Ambache about music, the joys of working in L.A.and the dangers of curly hair when you live in Leeds.

Bailey Rae Lucy: You’ve been missing in action for quite a while - 6 years to be exact. You don’t make a quick album do you? Corinne: I don’t. No, I love to take my time. I think I really enjoy the process – I love writing songs, I love travelling and meeting new people, and working with new musicians. I’ve really learnt a lot about being a producer on this record. I probably took more time than I needed to, probably because I was loving it so much. I just started to get itchy and wanted to play in front of people which is why we found ourselves here with a new album out. Lucy: It’s called ‘The Heart Speaks In Whispers’. Give me the lowdown. Corinne: Well the album is all about listening to the inner voice – quietening down all the chaos and drama that

"My first record was on tape in India, which I didn’t know and I’ve got friends who say things like ‘I’ve just got back from Thailand and you were playing in the restaurant’ so it’s amazing because I feel my songs have got to places I haven’t got to yet."

surrounds us and find out what’s going on inside. How nature, our bodies, our subconscious, our instincts all tell us about what’s happening in our heart. Lucy: You make a lady look glamorous with a guitar. You’ve always done that as a singer songwriter but with femininity. Corinne: Well I wanted to have those heels on I guess! I love playing guitar and when I first started, I was in an indie band where it was all baby doll dresses and we all wanted to be Courtney Love. Now I feel that I’m coming into my own style. I like going to town! Lucy: One of the songs on the album is titled ‘Hey I Won’t Break Your Heart’. Come on, you can’t guarantee that! Corinne: That song’s interesting because it’s about love the second time around with the same person. It’s about doing it and thinking ‘you have really hurt me but let’s trust each other’. I think as you get older, you have these crazy experiences in love and it’s not just some cookie cutter, puppy dog thing. It can be really intense. Lucy: The album was made half in Leeds, half in LA right? Corinne: I built a studio in Leeds. After my last record I wanted to have somewhere I could put all my

instruments, and be playful, and we managed to make it a scene we really liked. Then we thought it would be great to go to Los Angeles and work with some different musicians – some who had been on my wishlist for a long time. Lucy: But you still love being in Leeds? Corinne: I do! I guess I grew up there, both my parents are there, my sister is there at the moment, and I think it has a really good music scene. But I also like getting on the aeroplane and getting to travel as well so I feel lucky that I get to do both things. Lucy: I did go to Leeds and it did not stop raining! Corinne: Yeah it’s pretty rainy,. It’s not the best place to live if you have really curly hair! Lucy: Your music travels really far doesn’t it? It has given you the ability to go around the world. Corinne: It’s a really funny thing when you release records because you never know who’s going to get to hear them. My first record was on tape in India, which I didn’t know and I’ve got friends who say things like ‘I’ve just got back from Thailand and you were playing in the restaurant’ so it’s amazing because I feel my songs have got to places I haven’t got to yet.

Learn something new Whether you want to get a qualification so you can get a better job, or you just fancy trying a new hobby, make 2017 the year you try something new. www.futurelearn.com is a good place to start. It offers hundreds of free, short online courses. Many are delivered by leading UK universities.

Appreciate the little things We’re often so busy; we don’t get time to really appreciate the little things in life. A soak in the bath, your favourite radio programme, a chat with an old friend. Taking a moment to be thankful can make us happier and calmer, and improve our relationships.

New Year’s Resolutions

You could try writing fiction, exploring digital technologies, or learning about forensic science. If you prefer face-to-face tuition, check out the courses offered by your local college. You could improve your computer skills, take up a new craft, or find out how to delve into your family history.

you’ll want to keep Enjoy time outdoors Nature is good for you. It’s been proven to help with depression, anxiety, stress and a whole lot of other issues. It may even help you to live longer. We know the great British weather doesn’t always make it the most tempting prospect. But if the sun breaks through the clouds, wrap up warm, pull your wellies on and head for your nearest green space. You’ll likely find you feel calmer and happier as a result.

All too often New Year’s resolutions seem to focus on doing more of what we don’t enjoy, and less of what we do enjoy. So this issue, we thought we’d give you our suggestions for resolutions you’ll actually want to keep.

Take time to cook Home cooked meals are usually much better for you than ready meals. They’re higher in vitamins and minerals, and lower in salt and sugar. So, try resolving to cook for yourself a few days a week. If you struggle to find the time, you could try a box scheme. Simply Cook, for example, post you the herbs, seasonings and recipes to make simple (but delicious) meals in around 20 minutes. Internationally-renowned celebrity hairdresser Guy Kremer loves working on weddings, and says it's never too early to start planning the perfect look. "A bride should come for a consultation at least a month before the wedding," says Guy, at his Parchment Street salon in Winchester. "But she can start preparing her hair straight away to ensure it is in the perfect condition for her special day." Guy, who has styled the hair of some of the world's most glamorous women, recommends discussing your colours and themes with your stylist, and taking in samples of your dress material to help decide on colour, highlights or hair ornaments. "Remember, the hair style you choose will need to work with your preferred style of dress -

No bride wants to have a bad hair day for their wedding, so getting it right has never been so important.

whether it has a high collar, ornate decoration or low neckline. "It should also reflect your personality, and the style of the wedding. If it is a country wedding, the look can be informal - flowing and soft. A more formal wedding needs something more elegant and sophisticated. "I see it as my role to make sure the bride feels 100 per cent confident with the way she looks. Planning a wedding can be very stressful, so it's nice for me to make one aspect of the day as easy and relaxing as possible."

In Defence of the Bridesmaid Dress In an age of trying to stand out, have you ever wondered why bridesmaids all dress alike? The other day over lunch, an excited friend of mine gushed over her brand new engagement ring. After a few congratulatory toasts, she asked me to stand next to her when she says “I do.”

Get the Look

3.

From our local High Street

In the past few years I have attended dozens of weddings and been bestowed the honour of being a bridesmaid more than once. While I love supporting my friends on their big day, the first topic of conversation is always the dress. More than likely, as a member of the bridal party, you’ll be expected to shell out a lot of dough for a sub-par dress that you’ll only wear once; which is what got me thinking about the origin of matching dresses in the first place.

4.

It’s been said that the concept of bridesmaids wearing matching dresses originates back to ancient Rome. To protect the bride from alternate suitors and evil spirits with intentions of harming or making off with the bride, she and a group of women wore matching outfits. For it’s hard to kidnap or possess the bride when you can’t be sure which one she is. While the reason of matching is antiquated (we hope), the gowns do provide the perfect backdrop for the special couple’s picturesque photo albums. With so many people attempting daring feats (like climbing mountains and cliff diving) just for the perfect Instagram shot, a less than beautiful dress seems like a small price to pay for a friend’s big day.

Say Yes to Colourful Blossoms Whether you’re looking for just a winsome touch or a full on avant-garde gown, there’s a look out there for everyone. For the daring bride that is not afraid of a little colour, a non-traditional floral wedding dress will make her feel like the belle of the ball. No longer reserved for the “wild child”, designers have added colour to both daring and classic silhouettes for every type of bride. Ines di Santo and Naeem Khan both showcased elegant gowns adorned with colourful floral prints, beadwork and appliqués. Khan filled the runways of Barcelona’s Bridal Week with delicate florals in soft pastels. Another favorite by Khan was an off-the-shoulder gown with pockets and bright blue flowers.

With it’s universally flattering properties, it’s no surprise that one of the year’s hottest trends has trickled into bridal wear. Accentuating your décolleté adds a subtle sexiness to your look without losing that “blushing bride” air traditionally attributed to a classic wedding dress. For a demure touch, nothing beats a little lace as proven by designer Reem Acra’s ethereal collection. Based around lace sleeves and off-the-shoulder styles, Acra used scalloped lace, bell and even illusion sleeves to push the boundaries of this classic shape. Don O’Neil, creative director for Theia, showcased both streamlined silhouettes and Bohemian inspired dresses with exposed shoulders. White Chantilly lace tiered ruffle gowns and ivory crepe mermaid gowns walked one by one down the runway. O’Neil also showcased an ivory crepe off-the-shoulder sweetheart jumpsuit for the bride looking for the perfect combination of classic and non-traditional.

Fresh, dewy skin, like the models wore at Oscar de la Renta’s Bridal Collection, is always in style. Paired with a romantic pink lip and an un-done up-do or textured waves, the modern bride is surprisingly classic.

China produces about 90% of the world's fireworks. Many tons of fireworks explode all around China as the clock strikes midnight beginning the Chinese New Year. Fireworks are used to scare evil spirits.

Year of the

Rooster On New Year’s Eve, Reunion Dinner is eaten. Many Chinese believe this is the most important meal of the year. It is usually shared by several generations and consists of fish, dumplings, spring rolls, glutinous rice cakes and sweet rice balls. To mark New Year, red lanterns are hung in the street, red couplets are pasted on doors and images of prosperity displayed. Fireworks are lit and it’s believed that the person who launches the first firework of the New Year will have good luck. Lion and Dragon Dances take place and these are intended to scare away evil, and attract health, wealth and wisdom.

Many New Year activities have links with Chinese legends New Year is called Guo Nian which means ‘celebrate a New Year’ or ‘overcome Nian’. Nian was an ancient sea living monster who 22

Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 28 January. In China many people will take a whole week off from work to mark the celebration. It is known as the Spring Festival. came onto land on New Year’s Eve to eat people and livestock. One year, an old man with white hair and a ruddy complexion managed to scare away the monster by pasting red papers on to doors, burning bamboo which made a loud cracking sound, lighting candles in the houses and wearing red clothes. Another monster called Sui was said to terrify children whilst they slept. Parents would stay up all night watching and lighting candles to try and keep their children safe. One official’s family gave their child eight gold coins to play with. The child wrapped the coins in red paper and then played at unwrapping them and wrapping them back up until he got so tired he fell asleep. The parents put the coins under the child’s

pillow and legend has it that when Sui came and tried to touch the child, the eight coins omitted such a strong light that it scared the demon away. This is the basis for why elders and those who are married give children and young unmarried people red envelopes with coins in them at New Year. The red envelope is called Yasui Qian which means suppressing Sui money and the purpose is to scare away the monster and bring good luck.

According to Chinese astrology. . . each year is associated with an animal symbol. There is a 12 year cycle and 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. Those born in the Year of the Rooster are believed to be observant, hardworking, confident and courageous. They are best matched with those born in the Year of the Ox or Snake.

Hidden Figures

The Boss Baby

Released 27 January

Released 24 February

Released 31 March

An aspiring young actress (Lily Collins) and her ambitious young driver (Alden Ehrenreich) struggle with the absurd eccentricities of the unpredictable billionaire (Warren Beatty) whom they work for.

Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae).

DreamWorks Animation and the director of Madagascar invite you to meet a most unusual baby. He wears a suit, speaks with the voice and wit of Alec Baldwin, and stars in the animated comedy.

It’s Hollywood, 1958. Small town beauty queen and devout Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey (Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), who is engaged to be married to his sweetheart is a deeply religious Methodist. Their instant attraction not only puts their religious convictions to the test. Hughes’ behaviour intersects with Marla and Frank in very separate and unexpected ways, and as they are drawn deeper, their values are challenged and their lives are changed.

Brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

The Boss Baby is a hilariously universal story about how a new baby's arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator, a wildly imaginative 7 year old named Tim. With a sly, heart-filled message about the importance of family, is an authentic and broadly appealing original comedy for all ages.

There have been several novels published in recent years which feature an autistic character; The Rosie Project is one of them.

Based on the Norwegian fairy tale ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’ this sweeping fantasy story is set in the snow-covered lands of Scandinavia.

The Sad Skeleton is the first book in a new series called 'Finding Your Way' where we are introduced to a skeleton who’s struggling to understand his emotions.

Don is a scientist working at a university in Australia. In his late 30s he is single and largely contented. His day is meticulously mapped out, and routine is a part of everything he does. He is never early (a waste of precious time) or late (rude and puts everything out of time). As the novel opens he is lecturing on Aspergers at a conference but it is not a lecture from a personal perspective. Don is undiagnosed yet many friends and parents of those on the spectrum will identify his traits.

Legend has it that children born facing north are destined to travel far from home and die, crushed under ice and snow. When Eugenia’s eighth and youngest child is born her belief in superstition leads her to fear for her daughter’s future. She lies about the circumstances of Rose’s birth but it would seem that fate cannot be deceived by a lie. This rich story will appeal to readers from the age of 10 upwards and is a great introduction to epic fantasy.

Did you know. . . Cauliflower originates from Asia Minor and cultivation started 600 years B.C. in Turkey. Cauliflower gained popularity in Europe in the 16th century.

Oven-roasted Cauliflower Cheese Roasting the cauliflower imparts a lovely sweetness to the dish and the mustard means you need less cheese so it’s better for that post-Christmas waistline!

Ingredients

Method

1 large head cauliflower, cut into florets

Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas 6. Place the cauliflower florets into an ovenproof dish and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes, or until tender and starting to brown.

Salt and freshly ground black pepper For the sauce 20g/oz unsalted butter 20g/oz plain flour Grated nutmeg to taste 250ml/9fl oz skimmed milk 40g/1oz mature cheddar, finely grated 2 tsp Dijon or wholegrain mustard 15g/oz parmesan, or similar hard cheese, finely grated

30

Meanwhile, make the sauce by melting the butter in a saucepan, then adding the flour and cooking for 1-2 minutes, or until a light golden colour. Gradually add the milk until smooth, and then cook over a gentle heat for 3-4 minutes stirring constantly until thickened. Add the grated nutmeg. Reduce the heat then add the mustard

and cheddar cheese. Put the roasted cauliflower into the sauce and mix so that all the florets are coated. Pour the cheese and cauliflower mixture back into the roasting dish, sprinkle over the parmesan and return to the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is golden-brown and the sauce is bubbling. Serve as a supper dish with a green salad.

Health checks all women should know about . . . Midlife MOT The NHS Health Check Programme is a free screening open to anyone aged 40 to 74. It targets the top seven causes of preventable death: high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, cholesterol, poor diet, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption – all the things that are more likely to cause us to become ill as we age and/or die prematurely.

Can Osteopathy help during pregnancy? Osteopathic treatment aims to normalise the structure of the body, so that it functions at its most effective, treatment is no different during pregnancy. The mother’s body undergoes a huge amount of change to accommodate the growing foetus such as postural and weight changes as well as hormonal influences that soften the ligaments of the body, these changes can commonly lead to muscular- skeletal problems such as lower back pain. During birth, there are a number of factors that can affect the baby as it descends through the birth canal. If the mother has experienced any form of trauma in the past to her lower back, pelvis and coccyx bone, it can leave increased tension, joint restrictions and pelvis alignment issues. If left untreated, these issues may limit the ability for the pelvic bones to separate during labour, limiting the size of the pelvic outlet and therefore babies descent during birth. So do you know anyone who is pregnant and in pain? I can help! While on topic. . . I will be going on maternity leave from March and will be back soon!

Bone density check The menopause can seriously affect bone health. Once we’re over 50 we are at risk of osteoporosis because a drop in oestrogen for a prolonged period can cause a loss in bone mass. If you have a family history of osteoporosis, are a heavy drinker or smoker, have rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn’s Disease then it is important to have your bone density assessed. Low radiation X-rays are used to take pictures of your spine and hips while you are lying down. You can also request a ‘bone turnover’ test. This is a urine test which detects whether you’re losing bone mass. If you are you may need calcium or vitamin D supplements.

Bowel checks Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK yet accounts for the second highest number of deaths, so it’s essential to have regular tests. A test involves submitting a specimen of your stool for analysis through a postal self test kit. Everyone aged 60 to 74 is sent a free home test kit every two years from the NHS, but you can take the test if you are younger than this and it’s a good idea if you have a family history of bowel cancer. The test can detect tiny Remember, prevention is amounts of blood in better than cure. If you’ve set yourself a new year's resolution to be more healthy and active then good on you! However, before you tackle the treadmill or whip up a few green smoothies, I think it’s important to get yourself in the right frame of mind to begin!

The right frame of mind. . . The first step to being fit and healthy starts by forming a positive mental association with exercise. This way you are much more likely to stick to your goals and get those results you are after. So, below are my three main tips for staying on track with your fitness!

Make it enjoyable! This is crucial. Whatever your goal, it’s important that you feel positive. Often people associate exercise with fear or anxiety but by planning a programme that excites you, you are much more likely to stick to your aim. Fitness doesn’t have to mean press-ups and crunches, feel free to mix up the type of workouts you do. Swim, run, dance, cycle etc - keep exploring your options until you find an activity that makes you tick!

Reputable Letting Agent With so many legislative changes in the private rental sector, it has never been more important for you to have a reputable Letting Agent looking after your interests Naturally, you may think we will tell you how good we are, and yes, we will because we are proud of what we do every day. However, we believe our Landlords and Tenants can say it much better than we can, so please do review our Landlord and Tenant testimonials online.

Set ‘landmark’ goals Whatever your main aim, whether it’s weight-loss, toning, strength building etc it’s important to set small goals along the way. By having a few landmark goals you are able to track your progress and celebrate your small successes. Thereby boosting your confidence and motivating yourself to keep moving forwards!

Buddy up I often talk about the benefits of having a workout buddy and with the presence of social media it’s never been easier to connect with other like-minded people. However whether it’s friends, a family member or a social media account, finding ways to stay motivated, inspired and positive is vital to achieving long-term success.

Our Landlords have helped us design our services through their feedback. So today we can offer the most flexible service options to Landlords, from Tenant Find, through to Let and Full Property Management. We are confident we have the just the right service to help you manage your property. Also we are happy to offer “totally without obligation on behalf of a Landlord” free property appraisals and advice. Both experienced and novice Landlords have taken up this service and yes it really is free and without obligation! We, many years ago, voluntarily agreed to be “a regulated agent” through ARLA (Association of Residential Letting Agents). This provided a greater level of financial security to our clients, and a commitment to operate at the highest of industry standards for Landlords and indeed Tenants. Ask us about our Client Money Protection Scheme for example? In addition we are members of the Property Ombudsman’s Scheme and to ensure complete transparency all our tenant deposits are bonded in the government backed scheme, DPS (Deposit Protection Service). The post Brexit Donald Trump era is not one that many would have considered to be a possibility just a short while ago. Understandably in such uncertain times many businesses have decided to wait a while longer to see how things settle down before committing to leasing or buying new commercial premises. Consequently the market has been quiet for a few months.

Anyone contemplating taking new office or industrial premises should be aware that the supply of property in the Newbury area is possibly at an all-time low.

Property Roundup Anyone contemplating taking new office or industrial premises should be aware that the supply of property in the Newbury area is possibly at an all-time low. Many offices have been lost to residential use under Permitted Development and the high demand for warehouse/industrial premises has left supply of space very limited. If you are looking to move be careful that you don’t leave it too late as you may struggle to find suitable property.

One very attractive town centre office that has just come to the market is the first floor of St Luke’s House in Oxford Square, Oxford Street. Providing 1,350 sq ft of open plan space the offices are shortly to be fully refurbished and will be offered to let on a new lease with the benefit of 5 car parking spaces in the secure Oxford Square multi-storey car park. Early viewing is strongly recommended as there is the

possibility that the ingoing tenant can have some input in the refurbishment programme. Property let or sold includes 62 Cheap Street, a shop and flat investment sale at £215,000, the shop will shortly come back to the market with takeaway planning consent.

Above right : 62 Cheap Street Mill House

New to the market is a ground floor suite on the Business Park in Newbury offering 765 sq ft, semi serviced space at £11,850 p.a. with 3 car spaces. Also, part ground floor Mill House, Overbridge square where Deal Varney are offering 3,120 sq ft offices at £28,000 and with valuable tenant improvements and 12 car spaces. 37

Are you literally killing your pet with kindness?

Alan - Oscar Pet Food

Did you know that this is not only a problem with humans but a growing problem in the pet world as well? Research suggests that 8 out of 10 pet owners think their pet is the right weight. When asked which of a series of pictures most closely resembled their pet only 33% of dog owners & 23% of cat owners picked the ‘normal weight’ picture.

Is your pet overweight? Extra weight poses a very serious health issue, not to mention potentially expensive vet bills. Obese pets are more likely to suffer from joint problems, heart/lung/liver/ kidney problems. Their life expectancy will also be reduced. Is this what you really want for you beloved pet? So why not make one of your new year’s resolutions to get your pet safely back into great shape. They’ll thank you for it and so will your bank balance. So where to start? l If

your pet always appears to be looking for food, it could be stress related. As with humans eating could be a sign of stress in the animal.

l Take

a long hard, honest look at what your pet is eating through the day.

l Look

at the ingredient label on their food, do you know what’s really in it and where it comes from?

l For a dog feed twice a day.

Its easy to visually check the size of your pet:

l Find

l

out what weight your pet should be and get them weighed. We here at Oscar offer a free weighing service to all our customers.

For more information or help to kick start a healthy eating regime why not give us a call (see advert below).

Ribs, spine and hip bones should be easily felt. l

There should be a visible waist line with an abdominal tuck.

l

Small amount of fat can be felt.

l

Cats should not have an over flabby underbelly.

l Check

the food label and always weigh out the food based on the weight the animal should be, not what weight they are.

l Cut

back on treats, if necessary reduce their in-take of food. But do this gradually over a period of time

l If

you decide to take them for a run with you, stop and think are they used to this amount and type of exercise, if not then leave them at home and walk them separately. Imagine how you would cope suddenly being expected to run non stop for several mile if you're not used to it?

l Increase

exercise, slowly. If your dog is not used to lots of exercise then do this very gradually.

It’s Only Natural... For head to tail nutrition we carefully choose the ingredients that go into your OSCAR Pet Food. In the depth of winter garden birds bring us so much pleasure. Squabbling on feeders, their colours and songs brighten gloomy days.

Beautiful Birds Birds play a vital role in our gardens’ ecosystems. They are feathered pest controllers, eating everything from snails to aphids to wind-fall fruits. If you’d like to attract more birds to your garden there are several things to consider. Lots of people hang up a bag of peanuts when the weather turns grim then become disheartened as it hangs there unused. So here are my handy tips.

Nesting Dozens of bird species make use of nest boxes. Put up new boxes now because birds use the winter to scope out good breeding spots. If you already have boxes, take them down, remove any old nests and rinse the boxes with boiling water to sterilise them. Come the spring put out some extra nesting material for them to grab: sheep wool, pet hair, wool scraps can all be pushed inside a wire cage or a terracotta pot.

Food Experts advise putting out food all year round. There is a dizzying array of bird food available but a good starter mix includes sunflower seeds, canary seed, hemp and husk-free oats. Use a good tube-style feeder and clean it regularly as a build up of bacteria and old food can kill birds. If squirrels are a problem you can buy rodent-proof feeders. I also have one tube-feeder which is set within a sort of cage which keeps larger birds out, letting the smaller ones access the food unimpeded. Protect birds from prowling cats by planting something prickly and ground-hugging around the bird table or feeder – Berberis Darwinii is a good one, but you can also confound cats with a collar, which fits around the bird table stand and prevents them from jumping up.

garden view

Water A supply of clean water is very important for drinking and bathing. A sloping bath is best to accommodate different bird species, and add a flat stone or two to aid with getting in and out! Keep it topped up and check daily to see that it hasn’t frozen. If it has, melt the ice with warm water. Your feathered friends will thank you.

The Big Garden Bird watch on January 28th and 29th.

Plants Birds like cover so plant shrubs, trees and climbers. If you can manage it a mixed hedge of hawthorn, holly, dog rose, and rowan offers cover and food, and is also very pretty. Train honeysuckle and ivy over arches and pergolas. Pyracantha 'Soleil d'Or', Cotoneaster frigidus 'Cornubia' and rambling roses that will produce lots of rosehips are great for house walls and fences. If you have room for a tree try the bird cherry (Prunus padus) or a crab apple such as Malus 'John Downie'.

If you already have boxes, take them down, remove any old nests and rinse the boxes with boiling water to sterilise them.

Hopefully this has given you some ideas!
