Lebanese House
What a great experience Local Buzz had visiting this newly opened take away and restaurant tucked away in Bartholomew Street.
Well, aren’t we lucky to have another part of the world at our doorstep?
The restaurant adds a whole new dimension to traditional fare, providing fish and chips with zing, zest and a bit of wow conspired by the Chef who makes all of his own tartar sauces, ketchups, mayonnaise special batters and spicy coatings. The chips are triple cooked and the fish is of the highest quality, being shipped in from specialist suppliers on a daily basis.
The restaurant offers a unique experience with the feeling of a lovely fisherman’s cottage kitchen that provides themed dinners and where you can catch up with friends over a lovely fish supper. A fresh fish counter provides a variety of fish including their own deliciously smoked produce. For more details, or to book, send us a message on Facebook: fortheloveofcodnewbury
Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year from The Team! 4
The Lebanese House opened in Weaver’s Walk, Newbury bringing a taste of the Middle East with more than just a collection of dishes - it is a festival of delicious appetizers, rich appealing tastes, enticing colours and warm hospitality by owner Mohammed. Lebanese cuisine is tempting, tantalizing and offers a truly sensational experience of taste and aroma. Fresh vegetables and ingredients; tabbouleh, fattoush with olive oil, hummus with tahini, eggplant paste, green beans, okra with tomato and garlic sauce, kidney beans. . . the list goes on and on. Besides being delightfully delicious and healthy, presentation plays a prominent part in Lebanese cuisine. From fantastic mezzes to appetising dishes, every spread brings out the very essence of the cuisine. The combination of flavours and aromas are sure to put you into the mood for some fun with friends and family. And if you still feel peckish, make sure you have Mohammed’s speciality, a blend of pistachios with hot chocolate sauce! To book your table please call 01635 552644.

people to understand their opinions and wishes. I hope that from there we can include them in the plans for the town.
Many people tell me that one of the best areas of Thatcham is the Broadway, which has kept some of its village feel and is still the centre of the town. There is always room for improvement though, so a couple of us from the Vision team spent some time with the retailers to find out their views. We’ll be sharing our findings fully later, but there were two that consistently came up: the need for a wider variety
Finding ways to increase the variety of shops is something that we’ll work on with the local Councils, but I believe one of the reasons young people end up on the Broadway is they haven’t been asked what they’d rather do, and from their point of view it’s a safe area to be (they are mostly still children after all). Thatcham Vision is therefore starting a partnership with Kennet School to start an ongoing conversation with our young

Christmas Broadway Events
A couple of updates from the recent West Berks Chamber Council meeting.
On Friday 2nd December at 7pm The Broadway hosts the incredibly popular switching on of the beautiful Christmas Lights, with lots of charity stalls, a steam engine and specially staged entertainment by a local theatrical group and schools.
A skills and employment plan has been added to the proposed Market Street site, working with the developer to ensure that local skills needs are addressed and job opportunities are created. The Government has given the go-ahead for the Smart Motorway scheme on the M4 between Hayes and Theale. This will see the hard shoulder used as an additional traffic lane during busy periods. After 14 years’ service with the West Berks Education Business Partnership, Chief Executive Amanda Richards will be stepping down from her post. Her contribution to both the Chamber Council and her tireless support to link businesses and schools together in West Berkshire will be sorely missed. We wish her every success in her new ventures. Even Santa will be there with his Sleigh! Then on Sunday 11th at 3pm is the Mayor's classic Carol Service at the splendid St. Mary's Church, including their delightful Church Choir and enjoyable Handbell Ringers, with mulled wine and festive treats. Last but not least for those who want to get active in the festive period is The Great Thatcham Santa Fun Run an enjoyable 5 km route, on Sunday 18th at 11 am for Charity by ThatchamRotary.org.uk. John Holt -
Truly Inspirational At the West Berkshire Neurological Alliance's AGM last Thursday, John Holt stepped down from his post as Liaison Officer after 17 years of voluntary service to the neurological community in West Berkshire. He has been with the Alliance since it’s inception and has been truly inspirational in enabling different neurological charities to obtain improved recognition and services from the NHS and Social Services. Through his drive and energy he demonstrated the need for and value of the post of a Specialist Nurse for rare neurological conditions to the NHS. With the Reading & West Berkshire Branch of the MND Association, this post was funded for 2 years. Carol Allen was the first Specialist Nurse and she was succeeded by Jane Owen. His greatest achievement has been establishment of the West Berkshire Therapy Centre in Thatcham which offers power-assisted exercise to more than 250 people each week and has been making measurable differences to peoples' lives. Although he has stepped down from his role with the WBNA, he will remain an active trustee with the Therapy Centre and will continue to work towards achieving a Hydrotherapy Pool for West Berkshire. 5

The Breeze unveiled its biggest radio presenter to date this September – the legendary Jimmy Osmond. Mark Franklin spoke to him about fifty years in show business, touring and being a radio presenter.
Jimmy Osmond Mark: Do you enjoy doing the show on The Breeze? Jimmy: I love it. I’ve always grown up being on the other end of the microphone so being able to do a radio show, especially in the UK, is something that I always wanted to do. Mark: You’ve had such a staggering career – and you’re celebrating your fifty year anniversary by releasing a new album and touring in the UK. Jimmy: Yeah, who would have thought that - fifty years ago when I was just a three year old boy, performing with my brothers. I thought every kid did what I did! I never thought I’d end up owning Andy’s (Williams) Theatre and being empowered by him and his family to continue to celebrate his award winning music. We have 27 dates in the UK following our Las Vegas run. It’s not about me, it’s about remembering his amazing music. Andy touched so many people’s lives with his songs. I have some special guests – Charlie Green from Britain’s Got Talent, Emily Penny, surprises and the Moon River Band.
"We have 27 dates in the UK following our Las Vegas run. It’s not about me, it’s about remembering his (Andy Williams) amazing music." Mark Franklin presents the Breeze Classic Countdown every Saturday from 11am and the Jimmy Osmond Show appears every Sunday in September from 6pm.
Mark: You mentioned Britain’s Got Talent. So staying on the reality tv theme, of course Donny (Osmond) won the US version of Strictly a few years back, would you do our version? Jimmy: Well I don’t know. I’m always up for anything – from cooking to the jungle and now a presenter on The Breeze - so who knows what’s in the pipeline. One thing that is so special for me, and the reason why I love the UK so much, is that I’m not just a guy that ‘was in that band that recorded that song’. You guys have allowed me to do these unique things as an individual which has been so much fun.
Mark: And you can hear that in your voice when you’re presenting the show. Your anecdotes and passion really shine through. Jimmy: Well I kind of grew up in a different way. It was this old Hollywood kind of training ground where we had these mentors who we knew as just average, regular guys who became legendary entertainers. We would be on their variety shows, they would be on our variety shows and to be able to talk about some of these artists (I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m bragging) I have some really unique stories as I got to know these people as 'everyday people' and work alongside them. Their songs, their music and those memories together have really been a really special tapestry of experiences for me. Mark: Who are you admiring right now? Jimmy: Oh there are so many artists. Kind of embarrassing I guess – I’m still kind of stuck in the seventies and the eighties as far as my favourite kind of music (goes). I love classic rock as well. Some of these young kids that are happening today like Maroon 5 are so much fun to follow because I have young kids. I don’t follow groups, I follow songs. Mark: I’m the same. I think if you like a song, it doesn’t matter who sings it. If it’s a great song and you like it, then that’s cool. Jimmy: Yeah. Some people say “oh it’s from that artist, it must be rubbish” but for me, a good song is a good song, regardless of when it happens and case in point, this Andy Williams project that I’m doing right now, this music has stood the test of time. So many people have covered it and a good song is a good song. I love people like Stevie Wonder, Chicago, Steve Miller Band - all of those people I grew up with that remind me of easier days! (laughs).

The Cinderella story we know today was written by Charles Perrault in 1697, based on a traditional folk tale.
Pantomime is a marvellous and wonderful (if a little eccentric!) British institution.
The festival is thought to have originated from the benevolent Roman masters who allowed their servants to be the boss for a while.
But how did this curious British institution come about? Pantomime literally means "all kinds" of "mime" (pantomime) . It is generally acknowledged that British pantomime is modelled on the early masques of the Elizabethan and Stuart days. In the 14th century the early masques were musical, mime or spoken dramas, usually performed in grand houses although by the 17th century they were really no more than an excuse for a theme party. The timing of the British pantomime at Christmas and the role reversal of the
lead characters (the principal boy being played by a girl and the Dame by a man) may have also evolved from the Tudor "Feast of Fools", presided over by the Lord of Misrule. The feast was an unruly event, involving much drinking, revelry and role reversal.
Panto It's that time of year again. . . oh yes it is!
The Lord of Misrule, normally a commoner with a reputation of knowing how to enjoy himself, was selected to direct the entertainment.

This autumn/winter, hair is all about colour. Whether it’s blonde or brown, colour is richer and more exciting, with champagne shimmers and mahogany lights keeping the look feminine and soft. Winchester’s celebrity hairdresser Guy Kremer creates three hairstyles for you to try at home, based on L’Oreal’s autumn/winter IT looks.
1 & 2 Divide hair into sections
through the parting and make large, loose pin curls on either side until the whole head is covered. Spray and leave for as long as possible.

Runway History With the influx of runway shows on social media and an array of fast fashion companies producing designer influenced goods, many of our readers have reached out on Twitter and Instagram to question the future of Fashion Week. Thanks to inspiration from the “fashion parades” of Paris in the 1800s, the modern runway show was born. Originally presented exclusively to buyers and the press, guest lists were strictly enforced to prevent piracy rather than party crashers. While some brands are embracing the social media revolution offering “see now, buy now” pieces, for sale directly from the runway, including Burberry, Rebecca Minkoff, and Ralph Lauren. Others left the media circus behind and retreated to the earlier days of small presentations sans bloggers and celebrities.
Get the Look From our local High Street
It was here in England that the term “Fashion Week” was coined in 1984.

To me, star-studded fashion shows are entertaining, but the main point has gotten lost in the hoopla. It’s a big divide in the fashion community. Sure no one likes to covet a new outfit only to have to wait a year for it to hit store shelves, but the over saturation of designs leave consumers bored pressuring designers to keep churning out product rather than having time to really be inspired.

Stand out in the hottest colour of the season: Aurora Red!
Red Hot
Jump on board and fill your holiday season with glitz and glam, or at least your closet!
All that Glitters Sparkles and metallics go handin-hand with the holidays! From gilded metallic fabrics in lamé-esque finishes to thousands of light reflecting sequins and mirror mosaics, this season it’s all about that high-brilliance shine!
ON trend
Designer and founder of Giulietta New York, Sofia Sizzi, added a pop of this fiery red to really make her runway show sizzle. Zang Toi also favorited Aurora, designing the majority of his collections around the colour, including incredible gowns and jackets with intricate details including black beading and ruffles. At DKNY, models slinked into silky red designs, adding a touch of downtown cool to this stand out hue!
Standout this Holiday season!
At the trendy Baja East show at New York Fashion Week, models were given the Midas touch, decked out in glitzy tops and slouchy trousers as well as strappy, golden sequined dresses. Rachel Zoe’s Iris Metallic Tunic is on point, embellished with golden lace style accents. Suno, Tibi, and Dolce & Gabbana also proved the old adage “all that glitters isn’t gold” untrue, with collections brimming with enough gold to put any Las Vegas party girl to shame. For sleek silver metallics and allover shine, you can’t beat Balenciaga’s silver mosaic style strapless gown and matching boots! Pamella Roland utilized a ton of sparkle to add some extra vivaciousness to her collection; putting shiny illusion dresses and silver column gowns in the spotlight. At Barcelona’s Fashion Week, designer Justicia Ruano showed off a long pleated metallic skirt and matching ruffled top, perfect for any holiday affair! The metallic fabric instantly updates the pleated maxi-skirt and the matching top brings the look together!
Design houses such as Alberta Ferretti, Blumarine and Gucci were enticed by its warm undertones and stop-and-stare qualities. Christian Siriano, of Project Runway fame lit the catwalk with red-on-red stunning looks. He decked his models out in full-on Aurora with jackets, pants, dresses, and scarves, all in this vivid shade. Even the models’ lips were a smoldering passionate red!
Twinkling Eyes Let's sparkle! While you may not have played with glitter eyeshadow since secondary school, with New Year’s Eve approaching, now is the perfect time to try your hand with sparkles once again! To keep the look sophisticated and on-trend, add a touch of sparkle to the corner or your eyes rather than all over the eyelid like models did at Burberry, Fausto Puglisi and Emanuel Ungaro.
Balenciaga’s c silver mosai s es pl ra st e styl gown and ots! matching bo
For a more playful look, take a cue from the runways at Giambattista Valli and apply a thin coat of glitter under your brow for an un-expected pop of colour.

The Man in the Picture Susan Hill Oliver is a Cambridge graduate who is returning to his old college to visit his old professor, Theo Parmitter. It is during this visit, sitting in the old man’s college rooms on a dark January night with a fire burning in the grate that Oliver hears a story that will irrevocably change his life. Dr Parmitter spent his younger years as an art collector, travelling auction rooms buying known and unknown works. It is on one of these trips that he encounters a mysterious painting of a Venetian carnival, complete with gondoliers and revellers in costume and masks. The true horror is revealed at the end and it is guaranteed to leave you wanting more, with so many questions still unanswered.

Confident Business Writing
Elmo’s Christmas Tail
By RL Stine
By Peter Clarke
Samantha is a bit of a klutz: she trips over, drops things, and despite being tall, can’t manage to shoot on the school’s basketball team. As if that weren’t enough she is picked on by the popular star of the basketball team, Judith. One day Samantha decides that she has had enough and a chance meeting with a strange little woman in the rain gives her the opportunity to get her revenge. But, as the title says, she learns that you do indeed need to be careful what you wish for as the outcome may not be exactly what you imagined it to be.
Are you stretched by a lack of time in your business and, as a result, the quality of your business writing suffers?

Rib Ticklers & Choux-Ins By Glynn Purnell Written with Glynn’s trademark cheeky wit and packed with tempting recipes, Rib Ticklers & Choux-Ins is a great choice for anyone who wants to get creative in the kitchen. Readers can discover what makes a ‘hardcore’ cherry clafoutis, exactly what Glynn perfected through reading women’s magazines at the dentist, why he has such strong feelings towards sprouts, and which of his most groan-worthy jokes made the final cut (‘Is it Peking duck or just around the corner? No, no, no what a poor joke. I’m so sorry’). Full of as much character as there are recipes and insider foodie-tips, Rib ticklers & Choux-ins will have you chopping and chuckling all the way from here to Birmingham!

Fixing the Hangover from Hell
2. Are you breaking up long journeys? Sitting in one position for long periods increases the pressure through the spinal discs and joints but also affects the function of the circulatory and digestive systems as your body relies on movement.
Pounding head. . . gasping thirst. . . a vague memory of telling anyone who’d listen how much you love them. . . sound familiar? Most of us have woken up to regret that last drink (or five), at least once.
3. Are you slipping in your seat? Slipping exaggerates the curves and so it may be worth investing in a “shoft.”
If you’re reading this through bleary eyes, while trying to stop the world from spinning, you might want to take heed of these hangover cures:
4. Or is it just you? Your body may be out of alignment which is being aggravated by driving!

No one seems to be able to explain why the egg needs to be raw, so best stick to a boiled egg and toasted soldiers, with a side of tomato juice.
Milk thistle Milk thistle can help to detoxify your liver, so really does seem to help reduce a hangover, or even prevent it in the first place. Ideally, you should take one or two capsules before bed and another first thing in the morning. Suffering from a few too many hangovers? It might be worth visiting www.drinkaware.co.uk.

Christmas feel good factor Getting to the gym after a long day at work can be tough, but here are a few tips to help you keep fitness fresh during the festive season.
Embrace the outdoors! It might be a little nippy out there but the benefits of fresh air are numerous and crucial to sustaining a healthy lifestyle. Working out outdoors aids better digestion, boosts your immune system and combats feelings of anxiety and depression. So whether it’s a walk, gentle jog or outdoor workout, take the time to embrace nature and allow fresh oxygen into your lungs.
On those days where you just can’t face stepping outside, don’t worry, exercising at home has never been easier and the options are endless to keep your workouts fresh and exciting. The internet is filled with tips on how to workout at home but safe to say all involve a little creativity. For example, a kitchen chair is a great tool to use for exercises such as tricep dips. decline press ups and single leg lunges. Alternatively try using a cooking pot or tin cans as weights to progress your exercises further.
Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself The winter months mean celebrations and festivities. Life is for living so don’t restrict yourself too much. A healthy lifestyle is about sustainable change and that means finding a balance between keeping on track and letting your hair down. There’s nothing wrong with the odd treat once in a while, just make sure you balance that with regular nutritious meals and aim to keep as active as possible during the day!

Wrapping tips and techniques for beautiful gifts Are you one of those people who leave all their wrapping until Christmas Eve and end up using a bit of birthday paper because you run out of Christmas wrapping? There are lots of different types of wrapping available including paper, bags, huge sacks, tubs and boxes. You can also get lots of accessories from craft shops to add a unique twist. 1
Keep any off cuts as these may fit smaller gifts. This will also help avoid waste.
2
If your gift consists of a number of boxes try making a tower and wrapping ribbon round the whole.
3
When wrapping something soft like a scarf or a jumper, lay the item on a piece of cardboard, This will give you a firm base and mean that you can create clean corners and crisp edges.
4
For oddly shaped presents try padding out unusual angles with tissue paper or using a gift bag.
5
Try creating a cracker shape for tubular gifts.
6
If your present has a circular bottom, pleat the paper to get a neat finish.

Turkey Magic! My Gran insisted on soaking her Christmas turkey in brine (or ‘broin’ as she used to call it) I never really understood why until I tried it for myself.
tmas Did you know?
Christmas Crackers Christmas crackers were first made in about 1845-1850 by a London sweet maker called Tom Smith. He had seen the French 'bon bon' sweets and came back to London and tried selling sweets like that in England and also included a small motto or riddle in with the sweet. But they didn't sell very well. One night, while he was sitting in front of his log fire, he became very interested by the sparks and cracks coming from the fire. Suddenly, he thought what a fun idea it would be, if his sweets and toys could be opened with a crack when their fancy wrappers were pulled in half!
You need 750g salt for a large turkey. Use a large watertight plastic box and dissolve the salt in 4 pints/2 litres of boiling water. Add 9 pints/5.5 litres of cold water and leave to cool. Immerse the turkey in the brine, breast side down. Cover with a lid and put in a cool place like the garage for 24 hours. The next day empty the brine and pat the turkey dry and refrigerate overnight. Remove the bird a couple of hours before cooking to allow it to come to room temperature, and prepare in your usual way. So why go to this trouble? Here comes the science bit! Roasted turkey can be dry and tough because it’s lean and we tend to err on the side of caution with cooking times. Moisture loss is inevitable when you cook any type of muscle fibre. Heat causes individual coiled proteins in the fibres to unwind (the technical term is denature), then join together with one another, resulting in
shrinkage and moisture loss. Meat loses about 30 percent of its weight during cooking but by brining first, you can reduce this moisture loss to as little as 15 percent. The main reason for this is because the dissolved salt causes some of the proteins in muscle fibres to pre-unwind and swell. As they unwind, the bonds that held the protein unit together as a bundle break. Water from the brine binds directly to the proteins, and then gets trapped between them when the meat cooks and the unwound proteins bind together. As long as you don't overcook the meat, the natural juices will be retained.

Barn conversion at Enborne Gate
By Richard Deal
PROPERTY EXPERT From Deal Varney www.dealvarney.co.uk
Looking forward to the autumn quarter we usually expect a busy period. However, September has not yet come to life and if October continues this theme there may be more serious indicators.
The restaurant/cafĂŠ and nightlife scene in the town goes from strength to strength with the opening of two new premium burger outlets. . .
Property Roundup The commercial property market includes industrial, office and retail property and each has its own characteristics; the industrial or manufacturing sector is the one most likely to suffer from poorer trading with Europe but at present the sector continues to be active. The office market in West Berkshire stalled some months ago and whilst there are transactions that may come through for the last quarter the overall disposal rate is very poor and the incredibly low supply levels of office space makes uncomfortable reading.
Retail seems to be a game of two halves with the Northbrook Street area flourishing but Bartholomew Street and Cheap Street areas are still not performing. The restaurant/cafĂŠ and nightlife scene in the town goes from strength to strength with the opening of two new premium burger outlets and a possible new restaurant opening in Bartholomew Street, opposite the Kennet Centre entrance. The market in the town seems to be all about conversion to flats or new flats and the first of the very
large redevelopment schemes, Pearl House in Bartholomew Street, has been given consent. However, the site is now is for sale so work is unlikely to commence until well into 2017.
Lettings In the past month these include a barn conversion at Enborne Gate where 1167 sq ft has been taken and another barn conversion at Welford where my firm acquired 1,400 sq ft for an IT company. In Thatcham Deal Varney have let 10,316 sq ft at Transigo (above). This high quality modern warehouse was let to Packme Limited for a 10 year term and this is the final letting on the estate which is now fully occupied. On the industrial front B3 Hambridge Road (left) has been let to Alliance Automotive UK Limited. Comprising 5,586 sq ft this trade counter unit has been taken on a 10 year full repairing and insuring lease and Deal Varney acted for the landlord.
Would you like to add a new dimension to your home?
Many years ago, the house I lived in developed a small wet patch in the dining room. We called out two plumbers to give us a quote. The first told us the drive needed digging up and that the total repair cost would run into hundreds of pounds. The second fiddled around with a pipe in the kitchen and fixed the leak in minutes for £35!
How to choose a Tradesman You can now choose from a local company an array of conservatory and window designs. And you don’t need to deal with an army of builders!
So, if you need a tap fixing, the stairs and landing decorating or the roof patching up, how do you avoid the cowboys and find an honest trader who will provide a good, reliable service at a fair price?
We also offer a ‘ready to build’ option to fit with your own timetable. The conservatory is delivered to you, thus giving you the choice to build it yourself or hire professionals to help.

Personal recommendation is always the best way forward. If you have family, friends or neighbours who have recently had work done and are happy with the results, get details and give the tradesperson a call. Alternatively, ask someone you have previously used. They often know others in related trades. But if those you know and trust can’t help, where do you look? Sticking a pin in the local business directory is not the solution! Trading Standards and your Local Authority might be able to supply you with a list of trades people who have undergone vetting procedures and complied with legislation. In addition, check out businesses registered with TrustMark, a not-forprofit scheme licensed by the government and supported by consumer protection groups. Firms displaying the TrustMark logo have had their technical skills, quality of work and financial status checked and have also signed up to a code of practice that includes insurance, health and safety and good customer care. Visit trustmark.org. uk to find TrustMark approved tradespeople within 50 miles of your postcode.

When making your choice of tradesperson, ensure you adhere to the following best practice: n Set out a detailed, clear brief and get at least three written
quotes. Make sure you are comparing like with like. n Ask for a landline phone number as well as a
mobile number.
n Ask for references and if appropriate visit previous jobs or
look at photos of past work. n Only pay for work that has been done and not by advance
payments, though it is reasonable to be asked to pay a fair percentage of any materials bought in advance. n Check that any warranty offered is insurance-backed.

PET FEATURE
Does your dog suffer from smelly breath and brown teeth?
Julie Oscar Pet Food
Dental
Hygiene Great oral hygiene is as important to our pets as it is to us. A good dental routine is vital if you want to avoid a very costly trip to the vets. Teeth cleaning will require a general anaesthetic and as we all know, it can be a risky business. It is never too late to start! The older the dog, the longer it will take to solve the problem. We took our 15-month old cockapoo to the vets for a general check-up recently and the vet was impressed with his lovely sparkly clean teeth and his lovely coat. The shiny coat is the result of a healthy diet, however, the teeth required a more sustained effort. If your dog has a build-up of plaque, the easiest way to bring them back to white is to use a tooth gel specially designed for dogs. Just smear the gel over their teeth and encourage the dog to chew an antler. Antler is best because it has no calorific value and is much safer than a bone which may splinter. As the dog chews the antler, it rubs on the teeth that are coated in the tooth gel. The gel would have softened the plaque. The removal of the

plaque may be slower than using the vets' tooth cleaning service but it is cheaper and the results are great. Once the teeth are clean, a regular smear of the tooth gel and a chew will keep them clean and white. Antlers can be bought in various sizes so all dogs are catered for. They last for a long time depending on the dog and his chewing habits. Dental sticks are great too but make sure you purchase a high quality one and remember these have a calorific value. You can either limit the use or reduce the amount of food accordingly. Another alternative would be to feed your dog with a good kibble based diet. It is important to note that not all bad smells come from the mouth. Depending on their diet, their stomach can produce a really bad smell like bad breath. To avoid this, speak to your nutritional adviser who can help.

hedge
November is a great time to plant a new hedge.
Actually, in spite of the improvements in fancy fencing panels over the years, there really is nothing nicer than a well kept hedge. Suburban hedgerows not only soften an otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and cities. Hedges provide shelter, privacy and if chosen for fruit and flowers - food. Even the much maligned Leyland cypress has a part to play. It can provide a brilliant buffer against traffic noise for a start, and will screen unsightly views very quickly. Unfortunately it can easily become an out-of-control monster if left unchecked. Some have reached 36m/120ft! The trick with Leylandii is to remove their tops about 1m/3ft before they reach the desired height then clip
them twice a year: once in April, once in September. This keeps them looking very smart but makes them rather high-maintenance hedges. Fortunately there are many slower growing hedging plants which don’t require such intensive care. On the whole, it’s best to choose a hedge which is in keeping with the style of your house and the area in which you live. So smart Victorian terraces look great fronted by evergreen privet or box while rural properties might consider a more natural hedge of holly, hawthorn, beech, rowan and blackthorn. While not entirely evergreen, a mixed hedge like this will provide beautiful autumn colour and plentiful food for wildlife. I’ve seen gorgeous fuchsia hedges on my trips to the south coast, while slow-growing Yew is attractive and works well on poor, chalky soils. Euonymus does well even in polluted areas or coastal regions plagued by salt winds.
The Hawthorn in autumn November is a great time to plant a new hedge. No matter which type you choose, the secret of success lies in the soil preparation. Dig over the ground thoroughly and don’t skimp on the organic matter. Decide on the planting line and dig out a trench about 12 inches/30cm deep. Fill the base with well-rotted manure or compost then replace the soil, adding in more organic matter as you go. Make sure you mulch around the young plants to help suppress weeds and retain moisture. You can trim the hedge even when it is young. It encourages stronger growth and a denser hedge structure. Plus a well maintained hedge will ensure that you and your neighbours stay on good terms for years to come.
GARDEN VIEW
Garden boundaries are emotive subjects. There have been any number of feuds between neighbours over this very issue down the years and the main cause of aggro seems to be the humble hedge.
