Fly-tipper fined for dumping carpet waste A man who was paid to remove carpet waste and instead dumped it at a Basingstoke remote country lane has been ordered to pay £485. Louie Paget of Butts Meadow, Hook pleaded guilty to the fly-tipping offence brought by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court. The court heard how the 21-year-old was paid £90 to remove rolled carpet and carpet poles from a carpet business in Fleet in July this year to take it to an authorised council site. But instead it was taken to a byway off Greywell Road in Mapledurwell and illegally dumped. A passer-by noticed the waste and delivery notes relating to the company and put a review on the company’s
website criticising their waste management practices the court heard. Paget was contacted by the owner of the company and they both cleared the waste the same day. At the hearing on Thursday 5 December, Magistrates fined Paget £350 and ordered him to pay £100 towards prosecution costs, plus £35 in victim surcharge. He was given credit for an early guilty plea and for clearing up the waste. It was also noted that he was of previous good character. The borough council’s Interim Head of Environmental Services
Newbury's newest primary school is taking shape
West Berkshire Council is working in partnership with Newbury College to deliver a great new learning space for children in the town.
Highwood Copse to welcome pupils in September 2020 The school will initially welcome up to 30 Reception pupils in September 2020, with a new intake each year and all year groups in place by 2026. Parents and children interested in attending the school will have the opportunity to visit the site and watch the building evolve; entering the completed school as founder members in September 2020. 4
Local contractor Feltham Construction is progressing well with the build, which is planned for completion in the summer. The project was temporarily put on hold when the previous contractor, Dawnus, unexpectedly went into administration earlier this year. As a result of the delay caused by this and rectification work needed to restart the build due to weather damage and some defective work issues, the cost of building the new school has increased by £1.7m. The council acted quickly to find a new way to fund the project and a new contractor (Feltham) to ensure it would be completed. The additional money is coming from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), a contribution paid by local developers to deliver improvements in our communities. Dominic Boeck, Executive Member for Children & Young People at West Berkshire Council said: "A good primary education is an important first step in helping children to reach their full
Tom Payne said: “As a council we take fly-tipping very seriously and we will investigate incidents where items have been illegally dumped. Since May last year we have convicted 14 individuals of fly-tipping offences. Witnesses are crucial to this process and we encourage people to report these acts to the council by calling 01256 844844 or visiting www.basingstoke.gov.uk/ flytipping

potential. It's something which is really important to us, so of course, it is exciting to see this school back on track. "Feltham Construction is making great progress with the building, and we're working closely with them and co-ordinating with the Academy Trust to ensure pupils and parents are wellinformed in selecting their preferred school places." Iain Wolloff, Chair of Trustees for the Academy Trust said: "I'm delighted to see this important project making progress. The planned new school is taking shape, and we look forward to the building being handed over to the Trust in good time for a really positive start in September 2020." Issues Council announces new plastic recycling trial
A selection of harder-to-recycle materials such as sweet wrappers and small plastic toys are now being collected for recycling at some of West Berkshire Council's buildings as part of a new trial scheme. The Council has teamed up with Veolia, the UK's leading resource management company, to offer new recycling points for materials which are harder for residents to recycle. Recycling boxes will be available at the following locations in Newbury during the trial period: • Sweet wrappers: Market Street Council Offices Reception; West Street Council Offices Reception; Northcroft Leisure Centre; and Newbury Library; • Plastic toys: Market Street Council Offices Reception; West Street Council Offices Reception; Northcroft Leisure Centre; and Newbury Library; and • Toiletries containers: changing rooms for cyclists/joggers in the Market Street Council Offices (these facilities are available to Councillors and staff only). Initially ten boxes will be available and once these have been successfully trialled, the Council will consider whether potentially roll out to more locations within the district or increase the scope of the materials which are collected.

Berkshire Vision provides practical and
friendly support to hundreds of children and adults Every day in the UK, 250 people start to lose their sight and more than two million are living with sight loss. At least half of sight loss is avoidable: cataracts are treatable and if detected and treated early some sight loss due to glaucoma and age-related Macular Degeneration could be avoided. There are many causes of sight loss from those born blind, to those who lose their sight during childhood or young adulthood to those affected by Macular Degeneration later in life. Learning you have lost or are losing your sight can be frightening and leave those affected isolated. Berkshire Vision helps those living with sight loss and their families to live their lives to the full, safely and independently. Berkshire Vision helps to boost self-esteem and confidence through the services they provide:
• Home visiting. Home visitors
provide practical and friendly support; a listening ear to talk about coming to terms with sight loss, linking with partners for advice on benefits, information about the resources and technology available to help with everyday tasks and help identifying and accessing things to do in the local community.
Hitting the ground running in 2020! I hope you’ve had a restful and Brexitfree Christmas and New Year with your friends, family and loved ones. I certainly did and now we now begin 2020 - positively thanks to a majority Conservative government - hitting the ground running with the priorities that matter to you. We continue to work at speed to get Brexit done, so we can finally leave the EU in an orderly manner and move on. Next, we’ll invest in our hospitals, including a new one in Basingstoke and we’ll make sure the recently announced funding increases reach our schools in North West Hampshire. As Policing Minister, we are progressing well with recruiting 20,000 police officers across the country and I’ll fight for a good chunk of them to come to our communities. And we have to protect our environment and preserve our Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which we are so lucky to have on our doorstep. Thank you for giving me your backing to crack on with these priorities and more. There is a lot to be done, but as we begin this new year, I hope we can put the recent political turbulence behind us, reunite as a country and work together to build a bright future for our communities.
• Children and family support.
From tactile and sensory animal days, pizza making parties, to trips to the pantomime and LEGOLAND. Berkshire Vision provides support for all the family: children and young people affected by sight loss, their parents and their sighted siblings, etc.
Berkshire Vision would welcome hearing from you. If you would like to invite them in to talk to your community group, workplace, school or college about eye health and the valuable work they do supporting the visually impaired in Berkshire, please get in touch www. berkshirevision.org.uk/

Facts about
Chinese
New Year The Year of the RAT
Chinese New Year is celebrated by more than 20% of the world. It’s the most important holiday in China and to Chinese people all over the world. Here some interesting facts that you probably didn’t know about Chinese New Year.
1. Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival
In China, you'll hear it being called chunjie or the Spring Festival. It’s still very wintry, but the holiday marks the end of the coldest days. People welcome Spring and what it brings along: planting and harvests, new beginnings and fresh starts.
2. There's no set date for Chinese New Year
According to the Lunar calendar, the Spring Festival is on January 1st and lasts until the 15th (the full moon). Unlike western holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, when you try to calculate it with the solar (Gregorian) calendar, the date is all over the place.
The most fireworks are set off in the world that night. It is a day for praying to Gods. The Spring Festival was originally a ceremonial day to pray to Gods for a good planting and harvest season.
3. ItChinese is the longest holiday .
The Spring Festival is technically 15 days. But celebrations start on New Year’s Eve (making it 16 days).
they include money. This money is supposed to help transfer fortune from the elders to the kids. They can also be given between bosses and employees, co-workers and friends.
4. Chinese eat dumplings for every meal every day .
Well, technically you’re supposed to. But not many people do that anymore because you can have too much of even the most delicious foods. So most people will eat dumplings during the New Year’s Eve dinner. Others will eat them for the first breakfast.
5. red Chinese decorate everything for the Chinese .
4. Children receive lucky money in red envelopes
In other cultures, children receive gifts for holidays. Gifts are also exchanged during the Spring Festival, but Chinese children receive something else too—red envelopes. Also called red packets or pockets,
New Year
The Chinese will hang up red lanterns and strings of (real or fake) chili peppers, paste red paper onto doors and windows and more! New clothes are also believed to bring good luck and start over fresh. People will add new red clothing to their Spring Festival wardrobe too.

January
To ignite the new year, people all over the UK give up alcohol for the month of January. Whether that be to detox after the festive season or to simply challenge themselves, millions of people choose to participate as a means of re-establishing their relationship with alcohol. The health benefits of giving up alcohol for this length of time are considerable. Many alcoholic beverages are high in calorie and fat percentage, meaning that one is more likely to opt for healthier drinks like water or juice. Similarly, this period of detox is a good chance for the liver to completely recover from the previous month, where one is likely to have engaged in more frequent drinking that what is usual throughout the rest of the year. Taking a break from alcohol also has the instant effects of clearer skin, better sleep and more energy. However, the benefits of this sabbatical period are not confined to those which are physical, but go beyond the anatomy, providing people with the chance to reconsider their relationship with alcohol, and thus their level of dependence. Though many consider themselves to have a healthy relationship with alcohol, subliminally many
Abbie Cooper Davis Columnist abbie@localbuzzmagazine.com 10
are dependent on it within a social context. Many are accustomed to the confidence boost that espouses alcohol consumption, particularly within a social context. Simple activities like interacting with new people or dancing at a party are simplified by alcohol. Taking the month of January to revoke such dependence is an ideal chance to step outside one’s comfort zone and allow alcohol free socialising to become a ‘norm’ again. Whatever the reason behind participating in ‘dry January’, it is an invaluable chance to consider one’s relationship with alcohol and ultimately learn from this period of detox. Though this new year, the glass on the windows might be raining and wet, why not make the glasses on the inside dry?

Fudgy No-Bake Brownies A quick and easy way to satisfy your sweet tooth while keeping it healthy.
Ingredients • • • • •
1 cup walnuts 1 1/3 cups dates, pitted 1/2 cup almond butter 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/3 cup crushed pecans
Instructions 1. Grind the walnuts and dates in a food processor until finely ground. Add the almond butter and process until well mixed. Add the cocoa powder and pulse to mix well. 2. Transfer the brownie mixture to an 8-inch square baking pan. (If you line the pan with parchment paper, it will make it easier to remove the brownies). Use your fingers to press the mixture evenly into the pan. You can place a piece of parchment paper on top of the mixture as you press it into the pan to prevent it from sticking to your hands. Once the brownies are firmly pressed into the pan, sprinkle the top evenly with the crushed pecans, pressing them into the top of the brownies. 3. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before cutting into squares.
The Best Foods for Slowing Metabolism Greens are associated with a significantly longer lifespan, perhaps because they improve our energy efficiency. The largest component of our daily energy budget is resting metabolic rate. The direct effects of physical activity are relatively small compared to how many calories we expend just living and breathing. For most people, the calories we burn just lying around exceeds that of normal physical activities. Thus, our resting metabolic rate can have implications for controlling our weight.

The largest component of our daily energy budget is resting metabolic rate. people a dose of nitrate equivalent to a few servings of spinach or beets, their resting metabolic rates slowed by an average of 4 percent. That’s nearly a hundred calories a day. If our bodies burned that many fewer calories each, yet we ate the same amount as usual, we could put on a few pounds.
For most people, the calories we burn just lying around exceeds that of normal physical activities. Thus, our resting metabolic rate can have implications for controlling our weight.
Of course, green leafy vegetables may be the healthiest food on the planet, so we shouldn’t decrease our greens intake to try to control our weight. So, what’s going on? Researchers think perhaps it was a way our bodies evolved to use vegetables to help preserve energy during lean times in our ancient past. That is, slowing our metabolism may have benefits for our longevity.
In a 2014 study, researchers showed that dietary nitrate found in beets and green leafy vegetables improves the efficiency of the little power plants within our cells, boosting athletic performance by extracting more energy from every breath. Researchers also found that after giving
This may be why eating leafy green vegetables is among the six most powerful things we can do to live longer, along with: not smoking, not drinking heavily, walking at least an hour a day, getting seven hours of sleep a day and achieving an ideal weight. Doing even just one of these six may cut our risk of premature death by around 20 to 25 percent.

fitness goals Goals are important. Setting goals is proven to help you achieve more because goals help you strategically pick the right actions, help you put in more effort and keep you motivated over time. Having good fitness goals can help you push through feeling too tired to go to the gym or feeling uncomfortable because you aren’t sure what to do. Let’s use the fitness goal “lose 10 pounds” as an example. Even though it sounds specific, losing 10 pounds is actually super vague. Are you losing 10 pounds of fat? Losing 20 but gaining 10 pounds of muscle? How are you losing it? If you lost 5 pounds of fat but gained 20 pounds of muscles, would that be the same?
So what are some good fitness goals?
• •
Be healthier and more active Look better and feel comfortable in your own skin • Be stronger There’s nothing wrong with big-picture goals like this. But you have to consider two things:
1. How will you know when you’ve
achieved your goal?
your life better?
2. How will achieving your goal make
28 18
Your goal needs to be specific enough that you can answer “have I achieved my goal” with a clear, instant yes or no. And you need to personally know exactly why your goal is important to you. That’s what makes you motivated to actually take action towards achieving it.
What Should Your Fitness Goals Be? It isn’t about chasing a number on the scale. It’s about the first time you turn around and catch someone shyly looking away because they were checking you out. It’s about the newfound confidence you carry with you in everyday life.
The more specific the better. Be confident and good workout!
Your answer to the question “how will this make my life better” might be different and that’s a good thing. It should be different because it should be yours. So ask yourself: what are your fitness goals and how do they relate to the life you want to lead?
The antidote is…specific goals! A specific goal also gives you a hint of the specific actions you need to take to achieve it. You can make your goals more specific by:
• •
Attaching a number Giving yourself a deadline
Forget about Realism You want to set goals that are achievable. Of course you do and it’s worth spending some time thinking about how realistic your goal is. At the same time, forget about realism. If you’re just starting out, you don’t really have the experience to tell what goals are realistic. And you won’t necessarily get that experience until you try and fail a few times. Also, you may find that internal, damaging beliefs make it harder to set the goals you really want.
Outcome vs Process Goals Outcome goals are the goals that most people set. “Lose 10 pounds in 3 months” is an outcome goal. Outcome goals are good because they help you appreciate what you are ultimately working towards.
In addition to your outcome goals, set process goals. Process goals are goals related to actually doing something. “Do 3, 45-minute workouts per week” is a process goal. The benefit of process goals is that you can actually work on taking actionwhich ultimately is what will get you results.
Workout Goals
•
Write down three ways your life will be better if you achieve your exercise goal. • Write down three challenges you’re likely to encounter (bonus points if you include ways to deal with them).
Enjoy your workout! 19 29

Plan
or not to plan? that is the question?
It’s January and all the excesses of the festive season are thankfully behind you and for many of us, we’ll have probably been at home for the longest number of consecutive days and found ourselves looking round.
Sitting on the sofa, or at the dining table, we’ve started to see lots of things we want to do our homes. … So now it’s a new year and time to deliver on those new year resolutions! And “sorting the house out” is high on that list! New year, new project – right let’s get cracking!
Here are some questions to ask yourself looking round the room:
•
Is there enough seating for everyone to sit comfortably together?
•
Can everyone see the TV screen or perhaps the TV screen completely dominates?
“And why not? - the sales are on so let’s get out there quick and snap up a bargain! Ooohh what about that beautiful sofa or perhaps even a new kitchen or bathroom …yes let’s do this!”
•
Are there enough power/ USB sockets in accessible places?
•
Woa!!! Hold on …! just pause a moment before jumping straight in It’s all too easy to start thinking about colours, curtains and furniture etc especially with all those fabulous deals luring us, saying “come buy me! It’s such a great price!!” So I’m asking you to take a moment first … Let’s look at the rooms we want to change. 24
It may be the case that the room just needs a refresh decor but could you make it even better? If you stand back, is the room giving you everything you need? Let’s take the living room – after all we’ve been spending a lot of time in there over the festive break
•
Is the lighting strong enough/too strong? Is it coming from right direction or is it blinding? Can the levels of light be adjusted for different times of the day or use of the room?
How does natural light come into the room? Are the doors and windows in good or awkward positions?
Photography by Adam Carter www. adamcarterphoto.com
Answering these questions and jotting them down will help you revisit your plans and check that the changes you want will hit the right spot when done. Right, can we hit the shops sales – yes? … No, hold your horses not yet!!
Vicky Tallon is the talent behind Tallon Perry Interiors which specialises in interiors for private individuals and small businesses.
The next thing we’re going to do is create a concept board. Don’t confuse this with a sample board that shows different purchases and products
•
Is the room accessible for people with wheelchairs, frames or limited mobility? In the interiors business we map these answers on a bubble diagrams to help us to work out what needs to happen in the space, whereabouts and by whom.
the concept board looks at colours, textures and styles. Next month, we’ll look at how to pull this together.

Look Good
Feel better Look Good Feel Better are an incredible charity that offer FREE confidence boosting workshops to women, men and young adults that are undergoing cancer treatment. LGFB’s mission is simple, but powerful. It is to boost physical and emotional wellbeing to those undergoing cancer treatment. The workshops are fun, informative, relaxed and friendly. Attendees will pick up invaluable tips and techniques during the 2-hour workshops, not to mention being gifted the most incredible goodie bag full of gorgeous products, kindly donated by the beauty and fragrance industry. I have been a volunteer for LGFB for around 3 years and have been the Regional Coordinator for the Women’s workshop for Basingstoke for the last year (having just taken on Winchester too). I absolutely love the work that LFGB do and the benefit to attendees is hard to put into words. The workshops are run by trained volunteers and are a fantastic opportunity for ladies to get tips
and advice on how to care for their skin, deal with uneven skin tone and the most anticipated part of the workshop – eyebrows! The goodie bags contain all the products we use in our 12-step skincare and makeup programme (with some extra’s in there too!). There are two things I really LOVE about our workshops. Firstly, seeing the ladies’ confidence grow as the session unfolds is priceless! We often start as a very quiet group, unsure of what to expect from the session. By the end of it, I’m usually dealing with a high-spirited group of ladies and have to act like a school teacher to gain an element of order! It’s so nice to see everyone enjoying themselves. Secondly, whilst the workshop is going on around us, I love seeing the friendships that are starting to unfold before my eyes. The beauty of the workshops is that everyone there is going through treatment, so everyone

can relate to each other. I can’t recall a single session where I haven’t seen ladies exchanging telephone numbers or arranging to meet for coffee. I never underestimate the support that these workshops bring to ladies. Whilst I volunteer for the Women’s workshops, we have some amazing workshops for young adults and in 2018 we launched our much-needed workshops for men. We also run lots of fundraising events that you can get involved with too. Nikky Butler Regional Coordinator (Basingstoke & Winchester) Look Good Feel Better cancer charity

YOUR
2020 Vision for 2020 Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We often reflect on the past year and mourn chances we didn’t take or connections we didn’t make. Instead of looking longingly backwards, perhaps 2020 is a good year to develop your vision for the future so that it’s…well…20/20!
Review your goals Short and long-term Are your everyday activities helping you to accomplish your short-term goals? Are you working on meaningful projects? Make sure at least some of your daily activities help you to accomplish your short-term goals, and that those short-term goals can build to let you accomplish larger goals and objectives. But don't be a slave to your goals. It's okay to change directions and shift deadlines. January is a great time revaluate. Are your long-term goals from six months ago still relevant to you today?
It can be helpful to write down your goals using pen and paper, and then hang them in a place where you can see them. This acts as a visual prompt to remind you and inspire you during the day-to-day grind.
Nurture relationships Sometimes friendships and family relationships get placed on the backburner when we're busy. Are there If there friends and relatives in your contacts list who you haven’t spoken with lately? Use this season to catch-up, reconnect, and nurture the relationships that matter. Request a planning meeting It could be with your boss, or your partner! When you think about the next year — do you see yourself staying at the same job? If so, do you want to be considered for promotion or a transfer? Would you like to plan a big trip with your partner or start a family? With your boss you might mention projects you’d like to lead, qualifications you'd like to study for. With your partner you might want to talk about joining a gym together, planning a safari or taking up ballroom dancing. These discussions
are useful in both your work and your private life. They can help you understand points of dissatisfaction in your work or relationship and give you the clarity you need to explore a change.
Invest in yourself There’s a difference between being comfortable and being complacent. Try stepping out of your comfort zone and take an online course, sign up with the Open University or night classes at college. Try out a yoga class or a massage, or simply go away with a friend or a partner to a spa for a few days.
Reflect on lessons learned January is not all about new beginnings. It's nice to think about all you accomplished during 2019. What did you learn? What did you achieve? A lot probably happened in the past 12 months, but life moves so fast that too often we don’t take time to reflect on all we’ve learned. Take note of your discoveries and think about ways you can apply those lessons with intention as you move into the new year.

New year
new home
It's a sad fact that animal rescue centres are always busier in the period following Christmas. If you've been thinking of acquiring a pet, it’s a good time to consider rehoming one. Is my lifestyle suitable for rehoming a cat or dog? What are the practicalities? If you’re at work all day, like to go out for hours and love weekends abroad, your lifestyle may not be suitable to owning a dog. They are pack animals and can become distressed and lonely. A cat, or better still two cats, might be a better choice.
I've never owned a pet before There are thousands of successful pet adoptions each year. Animal charities are always happy to advise on which pet is best suited to your circumstances. They have the best interests on the animal at heart and will not let you rehome any animal for which you are entirely unsuited.
36
Will my new cat or dog need to be trained? Every animal is unique: it's a myth that all rescue pets are aggressive or timid. But equally they will need help to settle into their new life with you. The charity will advise about training and behaviour considerations for each cat or dog that’s ready to go to its forever home.
Do dogs and cats find it difficult to adapt to a new owner? Research has shown that dogs and cats dream about their owners (though quite how the researchers knew this wasn't specified!). Being rehomed is stressful, but animals learn to love again surprisingly quickly. Dogs and cats are naturally curious creatures so will quickly begin to explore new
surroundings and investigate the inhabitants. If you love animals but don’t feel ready to rehome one, why not consider volunteering for a charity instead. You will learn a lot, and make new friends too, both the human and the furry kind!
Beat the January
Blues It's hard not to feel a little deflated after all the festive fun. Here are five ways to beat the January blue. Exercise! I can hear your groans but one of the best ways to fight the blues and improve wellbeing is exercise. January is a great time to join a gym... motivation for change is high and there are lots of introductory deals and taster sessions on offer. But if the gym doesn't appeal then try walking. A brisk walk in the open air is guaranteed to get your endorphins racing.
Eat well! I know we've all eaten rather too well over Christmas but now is the time to sort out your diet. In a postfestive slump, we are far more likely to continue the cycle of eating junk food for a quick high – only to spiral downwards into feelings of guilt and self-loathing as the sugar rush subsides. Stock up on fruit and veg, lean meat, nuts and grains, and watch your energy levels rise.Sleep more - Most of us don't sleep enough over Christmas, and sleep-deprivation is known to
contribute to feeling blue. Over the Christmas period our sleep patterns tend to be more irregular, due to late nights, sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings at relatives' houses, and the consumption of more than usual quantities of alcohol. Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, and ensure you get at least eight-hours sleep for a couple of weeks. See how much your mood and performance increases.
We follow a holistic approach, using a blend of Sports Therapy, Massage and Osteopathy to successfully treat a wide range of injuries, ‘aches and pains’, ailments and dysfunction. Effective networking If you have come along to one of our events, you will have noticed the warm and welcoming approach that we take. We encourage everyone to get involved and promote what they do. BuzzConnect was created to bring people together and we believe that there should be no exclusions, no long-term contracts and no “performance pressure such as speaking to the room and giving a 2-minute introduction about your company. Our monthly networking at Metro Bank is hugely popular and will always be free. However, our evening events have a small charge which covers our immediate costs with proceeds
going towards our chosen charity. This year we have partnered with Living Paitings Charity. We look forward to welcoming you to our events this year, contact us if you have any questions. BuzzConnect Business networking is evolving, and it will continue to grow for years to come. Make sure you join the BuzzConnect Networking Group on Facebook, so you can share your company information for free and be part of a thriving business community.
