Home-Start is a national charity that is working with thousands of families in hundreds of communities across the UK through a combination of home visiting support, group support, focused project work and social activities.

Supporting Families Home-Start aims to give support to families who may be struggling to cope with a variety of challenges, including post-natal illness, budgeting on low income, disability, isolation, the demands of parenting young children, bereavement and multiple births: helping prevent these difficulties from escalating into crises, and crises from developing into family breakdown. In any local community, Home-Start may be one of several organisations supporting a family and they value their relationships with other agencies. As Home-Start is a voluntary organisation, it is able to offer a flexible approach that benefits the individual family. Home-Start support is not a substitute for statutory services, it is complementary to them, and the best results are achieved through an active partnership between all professionals supporting families in need including Home-Start.

What Home-Start achieves Longitudinal research showed children whose parents have had the support of a Home-Start volunteer have a better

start in life than those who don’t, and children are still benefiting up to three years after their Home-Start volunteer has stopped visiting. The study showed parents in the Home-Start group had more positive changes in parental

Who can refer families to Home-Start? Any professionals. The main referrers to Home-Start are health visitors and professionals in social care and child care sectors. At the three year follow up, the Home-Start group showed more improvements: there was more responsive parenting and children showed less temper and anger issues and less anxiety. Thatcham at War At the start of the First World War, the population of Thatcham was about 3,000 people. Thatcham was going through its own period of change, a new school, the Council School (Francis Baily School), was opened in 1913 to cope with increasing numbers. In 1914 Mr George Rutter highlighting the need for a recreation area; Councillor Davis suggested a cart to collect rubbish around the village; and by the end of the year there were officers quartered in the village. In 1916 the High Street was flooded and a controversial proposal in 1917 came when it was suggested that “girls” be allowed to bathe in canal! However the community rallied together and did their bit with many men going to serve their country. One such family, Mr and Mrs C Smith of the Broadway, saw six of their sons join the Army. More than 100 though did not make it back home. The Rutter family lost three sons; Corporal Gordon Rutter; Sergeant Percy Rutter; and LanceCorporal Cecil Rutter. best outfit instead. Green was always avoided, as it was though to be unlucky. To say a girl 'had a green gown' also implied that she was of loose morals, because her dress would be grass-stained due to rolling around in the fields! Hence 'Marry in Green, ashamed to be seen'. White Dresses were made popular by Queen Victoria, who broke the tradition of royals marrying in Silver.

Weddings are full of traditions and superstitions, but where do they come from?

edding WTraditions Wedding flowers Flowers have always been a part of weddings. This stems from the medieval tradition of a Knight wearing his Lady's colours, as a declaration of his love. Each flower has its own meaning and can display a special message.

Wedding veil It was once thought that brides were very vulnerable to evil spirits and many customs were originated to fight off these evil spirits for the bride. The bride’s veil was an attempt to disguise her face to fool the evil spirits. Another way to ward off evil spirits from the bride was to play pranks on the newlyweds. Friends of the couple would play a joke on the couple in hopes the evil spirits would see this and feel sorry for the couple and leave them alone.

Orange Blossom, for instance, signifies chastity, purity and loveliness.

Old shoes The tradition of tying old shoes to the back of the couple's car, stems from Tudor times when guests would throw shoes at the bride & groom, with great luck being bestowed on them if they or their carriage were hit!

Wedding dresses Until the 1900s, brides hardly ever bought a special wedding dress, opting for their

The world’s oldest living rose is believed to be 1,000 years old in Germany

Flowers

Beautiful roses Weddings would not be the same without the soft fragrant smell of the English rose.

Wedding

Whether used in church as decorations, as part of the bridal bouquet or in the table arrangements, roses are never far from an English wedding. Not only do they fill the air with their beautiful scented perfume, but they also look great when used as a show stopping centrepiece or in a bridal bouquet.

Why do we carry a floral bouquet? In Ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands, believing that flowers signify new beginnings, fidelity and hope of fertility. In the Middle Ages, strong-smelling herbs and spices were thought to ward off evil spirits. Often composed of herbs, not flowers, dill was especially popular, being the herb of lust, its consumption by the bride and groom during the reception was thought to increase desire. The modern version of the bridal bouquet was popularised by Queen Victoria who, when marrying Prince Albert, carried a tussie-mussie, a tiny round clutch of flowers in a filigree holder filled with moss and orange blossom. In Victorian times, lovers often sent different flowers as a way of expressing their love. Flowers became part of wedding ceremonies because of this romantic association.

Roses also make a fantastic wedding gift and can be chosen to help the newlyweds celebrate their special day. Not only will the rose bush flower all season long, but it will also help to bring back Only white and happy memories of their tiger lilies are wedding day. A rose bush known for their will also be a unique gift, beautiful smell so rather than the normal boring dining sets or a gift voucher, why not give a more personal and unique gift.

A show-stopping feathered gown is perfect for the bride who isn’t afraid to steal the spotlight! Placed in layers of feathered ruffles, added to the trim of a ball gown or arranged in a full on feathered skirt, this unique bridal twist will add a little magic and whimsy to your special day.

Fanciful Feathers

ilver

By Janine S

For a dress brimming with drama, try a full feathered skirt like Naeem Khan and Savin London crafted. Monique Lhuillier also used feathers to turn a basic slip style dress into a statement maker.

Wedding Style Conundrums You come home from work only to find another wedding invitation. While you may be thrilled to join in on the couple's special day, finding the perfect outfit to wear is getting increasingly more difficult. Surely you wouldn't wear the same outfit if you're attending Prince Harry and Meghan's royal wedding as you might for your cousin's in Surrey? To help you navigate the wedding season wardrobe dilemma, we spoke with Alex Longmore, one of the UK's top Celebrity Stylists who's worked with everyone from Claudia Schiffer and Twiggy to Little Mix and Jamelia and Lisa Talbot, Personal Stylist and accredited member of the Federation of Image Consultants, who specialises in helping people look and feel their best without hours of preparation. “I think the key thing is to really plan ahead with your outfit for a special occasion, especially a wedding. Really play close attention to the invite. Scope out where the venue will be and dress accordingly,” explains Longmore. “Take in to consideration what your hosts' style is like and the month the wedding falls in – you don’t want to be cold, that is the worst.” For women who are top heavy, Talbot suggests a v-neck to create space and draw your eye up. For pear-shaped or bottom heavy women, balance is key. And for women who tend to carry weight on their tummies, “Do not discount any dress that is fitted, as long as there is movement on the middle area, it will work,” exclaims Talbot. Colour is important too. According to Longmore, especially in the summer, opt for colourful dresses, “the brighter the better.” Longmore also advises to “avoid wearing dark colours at a wedding, I think the darkest you can get away with is navy blue but accessorise it with a brighter colour.” Talbot agrees, also suggesting guests shy away from black and opting for other deep/dark tones, like deep purple and deep red, to still get the same feel. 18

Looking for something with a little less volume that still makes an impact? Halfpenny London and Victoria KyriaKides' feathered skirts are perfect. Or check out Alexandra Grecco's tiered feather wedding dress, sure to wow! Birds of a feather may stick together, but with these extravagant avian looks, you'll be sure to stand out from the flock!

“Hats are fab. . . The trick with a hat is to choose one in line with the scale of the face shape. For example, a lady with a small face is better off with a fascinator [or small brimmed hat] as this will not drown the face.”

After multiple seasons of strapless gowns and nearly naked dresses, sleeves have come back and in a very big way!

Sleeves Take Center Stage

A Touch of Noir The traditional white wedding dress has been given a sophisticated and edgy makeover. Classy, sleek black belts and bows are the perfect adornment for the bride looking to change things up. Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig of Marchesa, used black accents to add a touch of charm and additional interest to the design duo's ethereal collection. Channelling Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, dainty black ribbons were tied around the waist at their NY bridal presentation. Marchesa also used black piping to accentuate plunging necklines and even paired their gowns with black shoes for added contrast. Highlighting both the elegant and unexpected, Reem Acra complemented beautiful silhouettes with dark belts, bows, gloves and more. While some wedding gowns remained pretty and demure, others displayed a more come-hither feel, proving that a touch of black can work for almost any bridal style.

ON trend

le The biggest raure is that there ! no rules g Wear somethin you love!

Designers are utilising them to showcase gorgeous, yet modest silhouettes, that are anything but matronly. However, on the runway, sleeves are also exaggerated for added volume, split to produce a touch of romance, and embellished on sheer fabrics to create beautiful illusions. A simple, yet stunning long sleeved gown opened Reem Acra's bridal show. Lela Rose also created a very simple silhouette and dotted it with pearls for a little something extra. While Temperley London’s embroidered sleeves added additional dimension to the beautiful gowns. Many designers such as Jenny Packham, Naeem Khan and Justin Alexander went full-on beaded, with delicate long sleeved gowns. Others opted for a simpler cut to showcase a little something special in the back! Sleeves are certainly not a one trick pony. The same designers who showed a romantic side presented beautiful full skirts balanced with delicate sleeves for a look that's completely on point and appropriate to wear with your extended family present. Galia Lahav put forth a Grecian goddess gown with split-sleeves, demonstrating how multi-faceted this trend can be. We're so glad to see the risque gown (that left more than just the bride blushing), has been replaced by sleeved perfection, ideal for every type of bride!

If time-honored white, feels a little. . . stale, a dramatic contrast can take your dress from ho hum to extraordinary!

Say “I Do” s to bold lip When it comes to finding the best look for your big day, do something that feels natural to you. In the past, many brides who wouldn't be caught dead without their signature red lip, avoided the colour as it didn't feel “bridal.” But in 2018, nothing is off limits! In fact, bright, bold lips are trending! For a pop of colour, try a berry red shade like the models wore to complement the wedding gowns at Temperley and Oleg Casini. Bright pink adds a lovely contrast to a modern wedding dress as seen at Amsale's bridal show. For a romantic vibe like at Naeem Khan, look for a dark ruby shade, which has the added benefit of making your teeth appear whiter.

As in any other court, the fashion was decided by the Queen. When it came to the hair styles of the Tudors, the styles changed as often as Henry VIII's wives.

Wedding Hair Naturally Beautiful The trend this year is for natural textures and at Banks & Klein, we can create this look for you. Leave your hair loose or sweep in to soft low chignons, long loose braids or even pony tails. Accessories are also on trend; flower crowns, velvet ribbons and crystal headbands will also add a magnificent touch.

Hair Styles in Tudor Times Long, flat hair Most women of the Tudor time rarely had their hair cut which is why they would end up with very long hair. It was normal to conceal the hair under a hood or a headdress but there were exceptions. On her wedding day, a woman could keep her hair loose which was also the case at coronations. Anne Boleyn and her daughter, Elizabeth I both had loose hair at their coronations; Mary I had loose hair at her wedding. Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn are said to have had hair down to their thighs. The long, flat hairstyle was specially favoured by Anne Boleyn.

Curls

Colour

Elizabeth I was different from her mother. Elizabeth preferred to have curly hair - which immediately became fashion among the ladies at court. Today, women use a curlingiron to achieve a perfect curly hair but in the Tudor era, women had to use a different strategy. The Tudor ladies used hot tongs to curve their hair into the fashionable hairstyle favoured by the Queen.

Natural tones to compliment your hair are enhanced with hand painted, face framing lights of gold and buttery tones of brunette or blonde.

Once married Having your hair hanging loose was a sign of virginity and was mainly used by young women at their weddings. But as soon as a Tudor woman was married, it was no longer prudent to have loose hair. Instead, she was to have her hair in a bun - a practical arrangement that made room for the elaborate headdresses at court.

It was very fashionable to have a high forehead and women would even pluck their hairline back to achieve it! Also, it was in fashion to have your hair arranged in such a way that it would not cover the forehead.

Digital detoxing

Chilly climates Cold is the new hot for 2018. While honeymoons might bring to mind a villa in the Maldives, more couples are bucking the stereotype and swapping bikinis and palm trees for cosying up by the fire, wintry strolls, fresh powder, hot springs, and incredible ice hotels.

Iceland continues to reign as a popular honeymoon destination, brimming with geothermal pools, a burgeoning foodie scene and dramatic natural scenery to explore. The capital Reykjavik is also a prime destination to catch the oncein-a-lifetime Northern Lights, best seen from September to April.

The beautiful city of Istanbul

After the intense stress of wedding planning, most couples traditionally hop on a plane to a beach resort for a week or two of romance and relaxing after tying the knot. However, more and more newlyweds are choosing to buck convention and choose local or far-flung destinations offering adventure, personal enrichment and bucket-list experiences as well as serious romance for their honeymoon.

Exploring architecture Pick from jaw-dropping cityscapes that’ll get every design-lover’s heart racing. Barcelona and Berlin are two European treasure troves for architecture lovers, both balancing charming historic old towns with modern art, culture and technology. Barcelona showcases the best of the distinctive work of modernist architect Antoni Gaudi, including the famously unfinished La Sagrada Familia, while you can savour everything from the iconic Brandenburg Gate to the striking Bierpinsel in Berlin. Outside Europe, Istanbul in Turkey has been a famous crossroads for the Byzantine and Ottoman cultures, as seen in the Hagia Sophia mosque; Brazil’s capital Brasilia is defined by its aesthetic of Futurism; and Detroit in Michigan has re-built itself as an up-and-coming arts destination, clashing 1920s art deco with eclectic postmodernist styles.

Istanbul is the only city in the world that straddles two continents: Asia and Europe

Raynaud's affects millions of us yet we often remain undiagnosed or left to deal with the impact alone.

Raynaud's

Awareness Month What is Raynaud's? Primary Raynaud's The most common form of Raynaud's is primary Raynaud's phenomenon. This means the condition occurs by itself, without being associated with another health condition. It seems that primary Raynaud's is caused by disruptions in how the nervous system controls blood vessels. Exactly what causes these disruptions is unclear. There is some evidence that primary Raynaud's may be an inherited condition, as cases have been known to run in families.

Do your hands, fingers or toes ever look white or blueish/ purple? 1 in 6 people in the UK live with Raynaud's, a condition that affects the blood supply to certain parts of the body - usually the fingers and toes.

Why do people get Raynaud's?

In some cases, an underlying health condition could be causing the blood vessels to overreact. This is called secondary Raynaud's. The majority of cases of secondary Raynaud's are associated with autoimmune conditions, which cause the immune system to attack healthy tissue.

The cause of the condition is still unknown and we're still not sure why some people get Raynaud's, while others don't. What we do know is that the attacks themselves can be triggered by a change in temperature, emotional changes, stress, hormones or sometimes can be caused by using vibrating tools. Raynaud's cannot be passed from one person to another and is not a contagious condition.

Autoimmune conditions known to be associated with secondary Raynaud's include:

Who is likely to get Raynaud's?

Secondary Raynaud's

n

Scleroderma - a condition that causes hardening and thickening of the skin.

n

Rheumatoid arthritis - which causes joint pain and swelling.

n

Sjogren's syndrome - where the immune system attacks the body's sweat and tear glands.

n

Lupus - which causes tiredness, joint pain and skin rashes.

Primary Raynaud's is more common in young women and girls, but both forms of the condition can affect men and women, or children, of any age. Many people with Raynaud's have never seen a doctor about it. If you or someone you know suffers from cold hands or

feet regularly, it is always worth getting it checked out. There are excellent Raynaud's phenomenon treatments that can relieve the symptoms, and conditions causing secondary Raynaud's may need to be excluded. Around 1 in 10 people with primary Raynaud's go on to develop an autoimmune condition. Other causes of Secondary Raynaud's may include: n

Carpal tunnel syndrome - this condition involves pressure on a major nerve to your hand (median nerve) producing numbness and pain in the affected hand.

n

Injuries - to the hands or feet, such as wrist fracture, surgery or frostbite, can lead to Raynaud's phenomenon.

n

Repetitive action or vibration - typing, playing piano or doing similar movements for long periods and operating vibrating tools, such as jackhammers, can increase your risk of developing Raynaud's.

February is Raynaud's Awareness Month We helped over 4,500 people last year for Raynaud's Awareness Month. Please help raise awareness of Raynaud's again this February - sruk.co.uk 29

Craft cocktails Consider offering your guests craft cocktails with unique ingredients. Maybe a cocktail perfectly designed for the season, such as a lavender spiked lemonade in the Spring?

Mini desserts There is certainly a change in wedding desserts. What is better than one cake? Tons of mini desserts of course! This becomes a sort of dessert buffet. Delicious dinky doughnuts!

Lavender comes from the same family as mint.

Local, organic, farm-to-table More and more couples are opting for quality over quantity, insisting on locally-sourced, organic food that supports sustainable agriculture and local businesses. If you have asthma or severe allergies take caution when eating edible flowers.

A brunch-style wedding menu

Floral flavours Flowers not only look beautiful but when used properly, taste delicious too. Floral flavours such as lavender, orange blossom and elderflower are one of the biggest food trends for 2018 and there are some easy and gorgeous ways to incorporate them into your wedding menu.

Edible flowers make attractive decorations in a brunch-style menu

Why not swap traditional wedding favours for miniature elderflower glass jars or jazz up butter for the table using orange blossom and rose petals for a stunning display?

When most people think 'wedding menu' they think of traditional dinner foods, but a lot of weddings are moving toward a more brunch-friendly menu – playing off the 'breakfast for dinner' concept. This is due in part to the growing popularity of brunch in general, as well as more couples opting for daytime weddings. Why not try omelets, waffles, and French toast?

Food trucks Some couples are forgoing a sit-down meal altogether in favour of some amazing and delicious food trucks. They are an economical option and can offer gourmet cuisine and a variety of specialties and ethnic menus. food & drink

Shrove Tuesday is a day in February or March preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes. In other countries it is called Mardi Gras, this is a carnival day, and also the Pancake Day last day fasting period of Lent. began as a way of using up eggs and flour before fasting for Lent.

Shrove Tuesday Tues 13th Feb

The British use 52 million eggs on Pancake Day which is 22 million more than on an average day. Over a lifetime, an average person will eat 7,300 eggs.

This moveable festival is determined by Easter. The expression 'Shrove Tuesday' comes from the word shrive, meaning 'absolve'. Shrove Tuesday is observed by many Christians, including Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists and Roman Catholics.

Being the last day before the penitential season of Lent, related popular practices, such as indulging in food that one sacrifices for the upcoming forty days, are associated with Shrove Tuesday celebrations. The term Mardi Gras is French for 'Fat Tuesday', referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash In the village of Olney, Wednesday. Buckinghamshire, Shrove Tuesday has been celebrated with a pancake race since 1445. It is said that the tradition began when one harassed wife heard the shriving bell and dashed off to church, still clutching her frying pan.

Ingredients 125g plain flour Half tsp baking powder Half tsp ground cardamom 200ml buttermilk 2 large eggs, separated 1 blood orange, zested 1 tbsp blood orange juice 50g butter melted and cooled, plus extra for greasing 1 tbsp caster sugar icing sugar to dust

LET'S Get GoinG 1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, cardamom and a pinch of salt. In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, egg yolks, orange zest and juice and butter. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and whisk to create a smooth batter. 2. Whisk the egg whites until stiff peaks form, then add the caster sugar, whisk again, then fold into the batter. 3. Butter an aebleskiver pan and set over a medium-high heat. Spoon 1 tbsp batter into each hole and allow to cook and set for about 1 min. Use a skewer or pointed palette knife to flip the pancakes, then add a bit more batter. Allow to set and flip again, cooking and rotating until you have a golden puffed pancake ball. Alternatively, drop spoonfuls of batter into a buttered non-stick frying pan and cook for several mins on each side. Dust with icing sugar and serve hot.

Bread Week 24th Feb - 3rd Mar

It’s the 10th anniversary of Real Bread Week: the annual celebration of local, independent Real Bread bakeries, and home-baked bread. Bread is one of the oldest prepared foods. It dates back to Neolithic times, when lumps of unleavened dough (made without yeast or other raising agents), were placed on hot stones in the embers of a wood fire. Archaeologists have correlated the development of human civilisations with the evolution of what is now regarded as the modern species of bread wheat. Over the centuries bread became synonymous with life. In England bread defined the social hierarchy. The word "Lord" comes from the Anglo-Saxon hlaford meaning "loaf ward", the master who supplies food. Bread-making is chemistry-you-can-eat. Our ancestors discovered that ground grain mixed into a rough porridge with

More of us are making our own bread too. There are bread-making classes and online tutorials. At the most basic level, it’s fairly straightforward to transform flour, water, salt and yeast into a loaf of bread and this is why the Real bread Campaign is keen to get children involved. The joy of nursing their first loaf from raw ingredients to mouth-watering yumminess slathered with butter and jam should not be underestimated. From then on it becomes a highly addictive pastime, it is the perfect family activity and you can eat the results. What could be nicer? water could be transformed into a tasty, moist, puffy, mass that was crisp on the outside, simply by placing it near a fire. It was an extraordinary discovery. These flat breads as they are called are still meal staples in the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.

been plain sailing. The rise of ultrarefined industrial bread in the middle of the last century led to mass-produced tasteless dough devoid of much nutritional benefit. Then there was the bread boycott led by Dr. Atkins and his low-carb, high protein comrades.

Somewhere along the way we also discovered that if the porridge mixture was left in the open air for a few days it magically began to rise and could then be baked into the most wonderful cloud-like substance, leavened bread. Although bread has occupied a central role in our lives and diet it hasn’t all

But real bread - naturally leavened, long-fermented, and hearth-baked is enjoying a comeback, thanks to bread pioneers in artisan bakeries across the country. They use an array of flours and traditional grains, like emmer and spelt. It’s now possible to buy high quality, beautiful, tasty loaves.

Feb 9th National Toothache Day! A good reminder to book that overdue dentists appointment!

Eating a moderate and varied diet can help with weight loss, weight control and help you stay healthy. obesity. Obesity, in fact, is a significant risk factor in developing type 2 diabetes. Preserve Bone Mass With many sugary and soft drinks, often comes phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid can increase calcium excretion, an essential mineral for bone growth and maintenance. Furthermore, soft drinks lack calcium. The combination of increased calcium excretion and lack of calcium can accelerate bone loss. Choosing a glass of milk over a soda can reduce the risk of bone loss and osteoporosis.

Sugar Why should we reduce our sugar intake? Experts suggest that no more than 10 percent of the total daily caloric intake should come from added sugars. But sugar is not the bad guy we all think of it to be. Glucose, a simple sugar provided by carbohydrate sources, is the body's primary energy source. Consuming sugar keeps the body's cells from starvation and energised. Without this fuel, energy will be compromised and the body will resort to other energy reserves including precious muscle.

Combat Tooth Decay

Like the body's cells, bacteria also use sugar as an energy source. The combination of bacteria and sugar can create a thick, glue-like substance on the teeth. The stickiness can ultimately lead to cavities. Good oral hygiene and sugar reduction can limit the risk of tooth decay.

Reduce Diabetes Risk

Boost the Immune System

Although some research has linked sugary beverages to type 2 diabetes, the sole intake of sugar is not always the cause of diabetes development. Ultimately, a diet filled with sweets is loaded with calories. A high calorie diet leads to weight gain which can contribute to

Too much sugar can actually interfere with immune responses that attack harmful bacteria. In turn, high sugarcontaining foods lack powerful, immune-boosting vitamins and minerals. Swap the cake for a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, molecules that prevent against cell damage.

Sugar becomes victimised when it is consumed in its refined form and in excess. Biscuits and other sweet treats virtually contain zero health benefits. Colostomy UK – Supporting and empowering you.

Couples what are your rights? Thousands of unmarried couples in Newbury, Thatcham and Maidenhead are at risk of losing everything if their relationship breaks down. As a family lawyer in the area I regularly work with couples whose relationships have broken down. Increasingly these couples are cohabiting – living together but unmarried. They are the fastest growing family type, with recent figures showing there are over 3.3m cohabiting couples in the UK. Couples in cohabiting relationships are amongst the most vulnerable in the event of relationship breakdown. Despite the myth, there is no such thing as a ‘common law marriage,’ and these couples have little or no legal protection should they separate. Under the current law it’s possible for someone to live with a partner for decades – even to have children together – and then simply walk away without taking any responsibility for their partner. Cohabiting couples need to be aware of their lack of rights, and consider taking measures to protect themselves in case their relationship breaks down. This may include life insurance or making a cohabitation agreement. A cohabitation agreement sets out what will happen to finances and property if the worst happens and can help protect both partners if they separate. By setting out intentions in these documents, people will be in a much better situation if the unexpected happens. Suzy Hamshaw, Gardner Leader LLP

The Local Sound of Newbury and Thatcham

Based in our studio in Broadway House, we are currently broadcasting to Newbury and Thatcham – and to the world! – via our website and smartphone apps, 24/7.

The exciting news is that after a lot of hard work, the Kennet Radio team has won a coveted community radio licence to broadcast to Newbury and Thatcham on 106.7 FM as well. We are nearly there with the fundraising to buy our transmitter, so we should be on air by the summer.

We are not-for-profit, unlike our commercial counterparts or the BBC, and we are dependent on grants and donations as well as some advertising. Our low power transmitter means our coverage FM is very local.

Advertise with us! By broadcasting only to Newbury and Thatcham, the cost of advertising on Kennet Radio is a lot less than you might think. That means you can advertise your local business to a local audience, knowing that you’re not paying to advertise to listeners who are miles away. Kennet Radio only exists thanks to the dedication and commitment of its volunteers. Whatever your interest, we’d love to hear from you visit bit.ly/KRvolunteer online, fill in the volunteer form on our website, and we’ll be in touch.

During February, we are always eager to get started and thanks to the greenhouse, we can do just that.

The joy of a A greenhouse means that we don’t fear the weather, we can potter in the garden all year round and we can grow a range of plants that would not survive without protection. Most gardens have room for at least a tiny greenhouse and it is well-worth trying to incorporate one into your space.

Choosing a greenhouse Before choosing a greenhouse, check whether your local planning authority places any restrictions in terms of size or position. Usually there are no problems.

On hotter months, make sure you have ventilation or your plants will cook.

Ideally a greenhouse should be placed in a bright spot because poor light and heavy shade will mean sickly spindly plants. Buy as big as you can accommodate because I guarantee, that no matter how big it seems at first, you will fill it. You can make a greenhouse from poles and polythene but it won’t last more than a couple of years and won’t be pretty to look at. Fully glazed aluminium greenhouses are good value, and if you like wood then go for western red cedar, which ages well and lasts a long time. It’s important to have level foundations.

You don’t have to heat a greenhouse but it would help to get you an early start in spring and to keep the tender pot plants alive through the winter. Unfortunately, having an unheated greenhouse the frost-tender plants rarely survived.

Once your tomato plants reach about three feet in height, remove the true leaves from the bottom of the main stem.

Preferably, electric heating is best option as it doesn’t smell and produce the excessive amounts of water vapour associated with paraffin. Make sure you use a qualified electrician and that all the sockets are rated for outdoor use. Fit a thermostat and the heat will only come on when necessary, making it very economical.

In the heat On hotter months, make sure you have ventilation or your plants will cook. If you can afford, go for the automatic arms which open ventilators if the greenhouse reaches a certain temperature. Also consider blinds to help prevent sun-scorch. You can arrange your greenhouse with staging on one side and a soil bed on the other for tomatoes to grow in. You can also attached some guttering and a downpipe to a water butt so you collect rainwater. So, plant seeds in February and imagine what your garden will look like in a three months’ time.
