At the recent Local Annual Meeting for the Chamber I was delighted to see Buzz Magazine’s Lucie Hobbs elected onto the West Berks Chamber Council. Lucie has already impressed with her depth of local knowledge and the answer to what’s going on where! The Chamber has submitted a letter of support to Newbury College for his bid to open a Studio School for up to 300 14-19 year olds. The concept for the school was based on employer engagement for learning around the key themes of STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). The Chamber continues to provide West Berks Council with valuable consultation on its Core Strategy for housing numbers and sites. We also provide input to both the Newbury Vision and Economic Development Plan in terms of the needs of the business community in West Berkshire. There is a great opportunity to learn more about the local Chamber on the 21st July at Newbury Racecourse. Coming together Community Christmas believes that no elderly person in the UK should be alone on Christmas Day unless they want to. Students and Vodafone Volunteers Celebrate ‘Take a Chance’ Students from eight West Berkshire secondary schools and enthusiastic volunteers from Vodafone recently celebrated their participation in this year’s Take a Chance Programme, a series of workshops and mentoring sessions run by the Education Business Partnership West Berkshire. Over the past seven years, Vodafone HQ in Newbury has opened its doors to 350 students, aged 14 to 15 years, to inspire and motivate them to maximise their potential for success in school and beyond. The 280 Vodafone employees involved so far have greatly valued the opportunity Take a Chance offers them to give something back to the local community by helping young people learn life skills and develop their self-confidence. In their final workshop the students spoke highly of their experience and

Jackie Osborne discovers not one, but two remarkable men. She was amazed how well Chris looked following his debilitating mini-stroke in March. Your local Buzz is proud to talk with Chris as he introduces his new book ‘Dad’s War’, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings and Fathers’ Day 2014. From his father landing on the beaches in France, through to being awarded his Military Cross, his book poignantly and emotionally commemorates not only his father’s true courage, but also of the many young soldiers that bravely battled and lost their lives. After the sad loss of Chris’ mother, Chris returned to her home to find she had been burgled, which would set him on a journey of discovery. “My father’s beautiful desk had been ripped apart. I found a diary dated back to 1944, Dad’s record of his own World war.” Following filming Channel 5’s ‘A Hero in the Family’, Chris
wanted to know more – to fill in the gaps. Spending the next two years researching, Chris soon discovered that his father was well-admired and respected as an Officer. “It was truly fascinating. The idea of my gentle father in a savage bayonet fight in Arnhem was incredibly difficult. It was emotionally draining to visit the place he was blown up on a landmine, just three weeks before the war ended.” Heart-wrenchingly, so many people around his father were killed. “How did he manage to survive?” Chris really feels that it was based on luck. “He was truly extraordinary and I have to say that handing a copy of my book to my kids has been the proudest moment of my life. It’s been wonderful to record it all, along with my thoughts on how the World has changed.”
Chris Tarrant said: ‘This book is about dad, the wonderful times I had with him, and what I’ve learnt about him since he left us. The research has been a labour of love, but hard because so many of his contemporaries have died. I have learnt so much about those who died so that we could be free – so much that I am ashamed about how little I knew. It’s an extraordinary story about an amazing man, written by someone who thought they knew him best.’ 9

If your teen’s profile is not set to ‘private’ it will be accessible to a potential employer and their content found through search engines like Google. This is true for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Keep just one social media profile where you post personal information.

Aneeta and Ameeta, who are planning to study medicine at university, carried out their project at Oxford University with the support of a Nuffield Bursary. Work will continue there to develop the uses of the protein that they were researching. Heroes at Highclere will be supporting and raising money for The Royal British Legion, ABF The Soldiers Charity, Combat Stress, Oxfam as well as other smaller charities. Lady Carnarvon felt it was important for a variety of charities as well as countries to have a presence on the day – “We hope as a result of this day at Highclere, to make a positive contribution to the lives of those in the war zones today, to help them in their struggles to cope with what they have suffered and to demonstrate our support for them.” Thrilling aerial displays begin with the Red Devils. A fly-pass by the DeHavilland Tiger 9, followed by The Great War Team re-enacting dog fights, the iconic Spitfire will grace the skies with a Mustang and B17 following close behind. Visitors will be able to step back in time with over 200 re-enactors in period costumes creating a ‘living history village’, the Castle Ha-Ha will be turned into a trench, there will be field kitchens, and Second 18
tent West Berkshire Brewery will be serving traditional ales using war time recipes, and an additional
music and dance area will host performances from the Spitfire Sisters, Newbury Rock Choir and 20’s music and dance lessons taking place all day.

Pigeon meat was eaten when other food was rationed during the Second World War.
Ingredients 2 whole wood pigeon 8 English asparagus spears 20 Morel mushrooms 250g good unsalted butter 4 slices ventrĂŞche Ham Sea salt White pepper Extra virgin olive oil 2 bay leaves 2 juniper berries 2 cloves Garlic 1 Tbsp chopped shallot 1 Tbsp chopped parsley 1 Tbsp chopped tarragon
For the Pasta 150g type 00 pasta flour 1 Whole Free range egg 3 Free range egg yolks pinch of sea salt
Roast wood pigeon, asparagus and Morel ravoli Method Mix together the pasta ingredients, knead for 10 minutes and rest wrapped in clingfilm in the fridge. Next, lay the ventrĂŞche Ham on a plate in the microwave and cook on high power for one minute or until crispy. Set aside until later. Now prepare the asparagus by snapping the woody base from the shaft. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and blanch the spears until yielding to your paring knife. Refresh in iced water. Keep the cooking water aside for the raviolis. For the ravoli filling: Blow the dust and sand from the Morels and quarter them. In a non-stick pan bring 100g of butter to foam and cook the chopped shallot without colour, add the morels and cook gently for 1 minute, season with white Pepper and finish with chopped parsley. Remove form the heat and check seasoning for salt, add if necessary. Roll out your pasta dough to around 1.5mm thick (you may use a pasta machine for this) and using a 78mm and a 58mm round cutter cut 8 of each size disc. Divide the morel filling into eight portions and place them onto the smaller disc, brush the edges with

water and then top them with the larger discs. Take care to make sure there is no air trapped inside, press the tops down and seal. Set aside. Season the inside cavity of each wood pigeon with sea salt, white Pepper, a Bay leaf, two Juniper berries and a broken clove of garlic. Rub with a little extra virgin olive oil and season with sea salt and white pepper. In a small non-stick pan brown the birds in 100g of foaming butter. Transfer to the oven at 180Deg C for 8 to 10 minutes basting occasionally, they must be pink removed as you will reheat them. Allow to rest for 5 minutes then remove the legs and breasts. (keeping the carcass for soup another time) Place the legs and breasts onto a tray and place in oven to reheat 5 minutes before serving Re-boil the asparagus water and cook the pasta for 2 minutes, remove. Reheat the asparagus in the same way but for 1 minute only then transfer both to a pan with 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, 1 Tbsp chopped French tarragon and 50g melted butter to glaze them. Put them on a plate, add the pigeon meat, 2 legs and 2 breasts per portion, top each with 2 slices of the ventrĂŞche ham crisps. 27

In our new regular property feature, our property editor talks about the things that are important to you, our readers, as homeowners or soon-to-be homeowners. In this edition we consider the state of the market and ask the question on everybody’s mind namely is the ‘bubble’ about to burst once again?
Property is back From boom to bust in the blink of an eye Not so long ago the property market was spiralling downwards and negative equity was a worry for millions. Now, all of a sudden, the market has recovered, inflation is rampant and there is already talk of a bubble. Its almost as if the race is over before its even begun! Is now a good time to buy or will we face a mountain of negative equity if it all goes wrong again? Should we fear another crash when we have just started to recover from the last one?
Can property keep going up in value? Fear’ is a revealing word because our attitude, usually ‘boom or bust’ (and little in-between), turns what should be small predictable market adjustments into big swings. Whist the market looks chaotic though, in the long term fundamentals such as supply and demand, affordability

The UK population, due to a mixture of longer life-span and immigration is growing by almost 1/2 million every year and with this comes great housing demand. This inevitably causes inflationary pressure especially given the supply challenges. On the supply side, companies like mine rely on the market and individual property owners to bring potential land forward for development. The more land that comes forward and the more sensible development is allowed, the more prices are held in check. Otherwise, excess demand and economic growth continue to drive prices upwards resulting in affordability problems and overcrowding.
market news During Quarter 1 of 2014 house-prices rose by 1.47% from the previous quarter. That’s a rise of 6% over one year. Prices are now only back to late 2003 levels but recovering quickly. We are still over 20% below the last peak however. Plan for a 2% mortgage rise by 2018 starting in early 2015. Note: Our numbers are INFLATION ADJUSTED to show a true view.

Should I take the plunge now? So demand continues to outpace supply, the economy is growing and affordability is also good. Mortgage repayments as a percentage of income are currently at 27.6% against a long run average of 35.9%. Just before the crash in 2007, this number was 47.7% (its no wonder the lenders became worried). The only real concern for now has to be that interest rates will start to rise to more normal levels and affect affordability. This should result in a ‘soft landing’ but sentiment again can play games with us and we could see more ‘boom’ and ‘bust’ cycles. Property will almost certainly keep becoming more expensive after the cycles are averaged out though. So yes, get on the ladder if you feel ready and build some equity. The market is still playing catch up so it’s a good time. Make sure when you do though that you can afford a rate rise (or fix your mortgage) and think about your plan to deal with other eventualities that could affect your ability to pay your mortgage. Be prepared for downward as well as upward adjustments and always think long term not short term. FUTURE EDITIONS How high can property go and why is property such a good investment?

We’ve kept them hidden in shoes and boots all Winter, but when Summer comes it’s good to put on a pair of sandals or flip flops, or perhaps even walk around with bare feet. So, how can we make sure our feet are in tip-top condition and feel confident about showing them off to all around us?

If you have a lot of rough and hard skin, foot conditions such as athletes foot, fungal nail infection, an ingrowing toe nail, calluses, corns or verrucas, a session or a number of appointments with a chiropodist or podiatrist is recommended. The terms are interchangeable, but strictly in the UK, ‘Podiatrist’ is a reserved title meaning that it can only be used by those registered with the Health Professions Council. Inside the profession, chiropody is used to suggest the routine processes of foot care, whilst podiatry is indicative of the higher skills and academic levels.
Once any medical issues have been eliminated, you may wish to keep up the look and condition of your feet through pampering at home, or a trip to the beautician for a pedicure. Regular maintenance tasks should include: l
Cutting your toe nails short. The use of clippers is generally recommended. Nails should be no more than a couple of millimetres over the edge of your toe.

Will it be daily alfresco dining with the family, weekend barbecues with family and friends, or just you relaxing in the sunshine with a good book? Of course it may be a mixture of all of the above, in which case you will need to look for versatile combinations. The amount of space you have available should also be taken into account. You might drool over a fantastic sofa with matching arm

In addition to your outdoor space, think about where you will store your furniture in Winter. Whilst vinyl covers can protect your furniture from Summer showers, it really is best kept in a shed or garage during the worst weather. This is where fold-away pieces can be incredibly practical, or in some cases, you may be able to take pieces apart for storage too. When considering the material of your furniture, consider durability and maintenance as well as appearance. Wooden furniture is popular and versatile, but needs regular

weatherproofing. Metal items require less maintenance, but have the disadvantage of being hot to touch in the sun. Some colours of plastic furniture also become hot, and plastic may become brittle if left outside in all weathers. Wicker and rattan pieces will need greater protection from the wet and are more easily damaged. Cost of course will also be a factor. Plastic items are usually the cheapest, but it is generally true that you get what you pay for in terms of longevity. Several materials offer a variety of colour choices. Remember though that white and silver reflect the light so can be uncomfortable to look at in the glaring sun, and black absorbs the heat so can become very hot. The safest colours are therefore mid-greens, greys or natural wood. Many prefer muted tones, adding style and personality through bright cushions and tablecloths.
Whatever you choose, don’t go on appearance alone. The most stylish items won’t get used if they are incredibly uncomfortable. So do try out your intended purchases in-store to ensure they will help you to enjoy the outdoors, and not leave you fidgety or stiff. 37

We are delighted to have at our doorstep, The Newbury Geological Study Group that arranges trips to sites of geological interest. Trips are normally day trips within 100 miles or two hours driving time from Newbury. They also have weekend trips to sites which cannot be visited in a day. For most trips, Dr. Les James of the University of Reading provides the geological expertise. Membership is open to all and it is not necessary to have any knowledge of the subject or to live in the Newbury area. Trips are designed to be both educational and fun and to give the opportunity to see geological structures at first hand. Handouts are usually provided and they normally have the geological maps of the area available. All aspects of geology are covered and they sometimes do some practical work such as testing soils or measuring river flows.
The season runs from October to July. There is a £10.00 fee per person per trip payable on the day (children under 16 are free).
