Make the Difference Berkshire Youth is proud to say that it advocates volunteering, or social action, within the region and has done for over 60 years.

Chamber update The Chamber Council in West Berks is a voluntary group, drawn from within the local membership – the meetings are chaired by local West Berks President Ian Vickerage, Managing Director of Imago Group, based in Thatcham.

www.westberkschamber.tvchamber.co.uk

The Chamber Council represents the interests of its members in the area and works closely with other stakeholders, including West Berkshire Council, on issues that impact on the economic well-being of the region. These include transport, infrastructure, broadband delivery, housing provision, inward investment and re-investment, skills and enterprise, tourism.

It is with this attitude and people who buy into our philosophy, that Berkshire Youth can lay some claim to helping recent government paper suggestions that volunteering is on the up. We have seen a 9 percent increase in regular volunteering, reversing the steady decline since 2005. Building on the success of the Games Makers at the 2012 Olympics, Nick Hurd, Minister of Civil Society, said that “these figures show a very positive picture of how well Britain has responded to

tough times. We should take pride that so many people have helped reverse the decline in volunteering.” The people in the local communities such as club leaders, the youth leaders, the committee members and trustees to name but a few. It is because of your attitude of wanting to make a difference within your local community that the government can make these claims.

The Chamber Council has recently been looking at West Berkshire Councils Newbury 2026 Vision, in an attempt to provide more fact based data about the role of the business community and to position Newbury as a destination for business investment. For more information about the West Berks Chamber of Commerce please call 01753 870500 Gary Cranford Business Manager West Berks Chamber of Commerce

Companies for career insight It is vitally important that young people have access to good and realistic information and guidance about the full range of careers available to them. Too many students are unaware of the wide range of occupations and careers that they might explore.

The death of Nelson Mandela has highlighted the impact that the life and spirit of one man can have on the atmosphere and direction of a whole nation. At a grass roots level, two other South Africans whose personal experience is making an impact are Letlapa Mphahlele and Ginn Fourie. Letlapa, commander of a liberation army during the time of apartheid, ordered retaliatory massacres on white civilians. Ginn’s daughter was killed in one of these. She later forgave

The Education Business Partnership work with the schools to deliver a range of work preparation events; from CV writing, interview practice and advice, careers fairs, speakers to company visits. They are always looking for more organisations to share knowledge on their industries and perhaps to give a small amount of time to talk with the next generation of employees. There are tangible benefits from getting involved; influencing potential future employees, brand or company awareness, covert training for staff by communicating with the young people and just honest investment in our community’s future.

Cash ISAs Here is a simple rule – if you have savings, you should have a Cash ISA! Individual Savings Accounts offer a tax-free form of investment - which means you get to keep every penny of interest you earn! Anyone aged 16 or over can open a Cash ISA and during the tax year which runs from April 6th to April 5th can (at the time of writing) pay up to £5,760 into it – either in a chunk or as smaller amounts throughout the year. Once this limit is reached, no extra sums may be paid into the ISA - even if you have drawn money out during the year. There are several types of Cash ISA, some offering a fixed interest rate, with others giving instant access to the cash. Deals can vary between providers, but once you have chosen a certain provider, you don’t need to stay with them forever! Though you can only open one Cash ISA per year, you can move providers and any cash you have in old ISAs can be transferred over without losing the tax-free benefits – as long as you don’t draw the money out yourself, but get the new provider to request a transfer on your behalf.

Tax Despite the long run up to the deadline – 10 months from the end of the year for sole traders and 9 months for companies to pay their tax, many businesses will

leave it until the last minute to get their accounts together and file their returns. It doesn’t leave much time to take a good look at ways of reducing the tax bill. Any opportunity to take advantage of tax planning has long passed and at best it will give pause for thought for the current year.

Planning At Lynchpin Accounting we take the view that a little bit of planning goes a long way. Invest the time at

How important is your Brand? To build a really successful business, it is absolutely vital to create a relevant, distinctive and memorable brand that truly connects communicates and engages with your identified target market. Interestingly, everyone in business, one man/ woman band or otherwise, is already a brand whether they deliberately set out to create one or not. It may not be the brand they would want to be or think they are but, good or bad, they are a brand nonetheless.

Your brand is all about how you want your business and its products and services to be perceived by the outside world and your target market in particular. Your branding is your identity, your promise of what you will consistently deliver, defining who and what you are and what you have to offer. Importantly, it serves to differentiate your business from your competitors, enabling you to stand out from the crowd by providing your target market with the reason to choose your offering over the competition. Branding goes much deeper than a name, a trademark or a logo. These are only brand identifiers, what stand for the brand. What really matters is

the start of the year to think about where you are going and what you expect the outcome to be for the rest of the year. It’s a good time to look at what your tax liability might be and how you can plan to reduce it. Planning is also beneficial to your business as a whole. A good plan will help you to bring some clarity to your business vision. It will help you to identify whether you are making any profit, whether you can take on that extra employee, how much you can invest in marketing, and what the likely tax outcome will be at the end. Then when the tax filing season comes around again, your business is well prepared and the tax bill is less of a surprise.

business focus

Following the final deadline for filing your tax return at the end of January, at Lynchpin Accounting we are reflecting on another year over and another one about to finish at the end of March. In the accounting world we are accustomed to the regular turn of the tax filing seasons and the mad scramble to hit filing deadlines and avoid the huge penalties imposed for late filing.

It’s the common ground for every business owner, sole trader and company director.

So take some time at the start of the year to plan just where you are going. Your plan does not have to be elaborate, just enough to help you to see where your business is going this year and you’ll be pleasantly surprised how much clearer everything becomes and how prepared you are when the next year end arrives.

your identity, what the brand stands for in the hearts and minds of your target market because that is what will provide a firm foundation upon which to build your reputation and a successful business. The simple fact is that if you don’t have a clearly defined brand from the outset, you risk the danger of being seen to be bland, the same as everyone else. Your brand is hugely important and that’s precisely why you should think brand not bland if you truly want to succeed. 7

Max Hastings

Sir Max Hastings, Britain’s leading military historian, shares with The Buzz magazine some of the highlights of his life as a war correspondent and thoughts on the Centenary of the 1st World War in 2014. 12

THe bUZZ_FINAl_JSO_220114.indd 14

23/01/2014 08:28:59

Early days – career and influencers Sir Max was born in West Berkshire a few months after the 2nd World War started. Both his grandparents and his parents were journalists and his father, in particular, was a war correspondent ‘in the thick of things’ during the 2nd World War. He quickly discovered what he too had a passion, and exceptional talent, for. Sir Max began his career in his 20s as a journalist with the Evening Standard and soon became a foreign correspondent reporting from more than 60 countries and eleven wars for BBC TV’s 24 hours current affairs programme as well as for London’s Evening Standard.

The Falklands It wasn’t until at the age of 36, and 7 years since he had reported the fall of Saigon, that Sir Max heard the news of the invasion of the Falklands. Although he had no plans to cover any further wars from the battlefield, he knew that Margaret Thatcher sending in a task force was a most significant opportunity. He was determined to go and spent the following months travelling there along side the Royal Marines and Paras who were training on board. Unlike wars since then, “the Falklands was a profoundly old-fashioned war in every way- even some of the weapons we were using, bren and bofors guns, had seen service in World War II” It was an experience that absolutely changed his life as a writer and historian. He was also the first journalist to enter the liberated Port Stanley during the 1982 Falklands War and subsequently wrote the definitive book ‘The Battle for the Falklands’

Britain and the Centenary of the 1st World War (1914)

Sir Max’s deep interest in what really happened and the truth of the events that took place during WW1 led him to research and write his newly published book ‘Catastrophe: Europe Goes to War 1914’.

‘Britain had had on the whole a relatively easy ride for some centuries, as all our wars had been fought abroad, Britain had not been invaded, it had always been professional soldiers who did the fighting and professional sailors; and we had Trafalgar and Waterloo but they were all a long way away. But now suddenly you have these millions of

men mobilised and 6 million British men go to war. . . WW1 was the worst thing to have happened to Britain’. Sir Max’s deep interest in what really happened and the truth of the events that took place during WW1 led him to research and write his newly published book ‘Catastrophe: Europe Goes to War 1914’. He has also recently completed filming a one hour documentary with BBC 2 on WW1 to be shown as part of the Centenary in 2014. His own wish is that the commemorations focus on explaining to children in particular, and educationalists, what the war was really all about and why it happened Having returned to Berkshire some years ago, he regularly writes for the Daily Mail and is currently working on a new book on Intelligence during the 2nd World War. And of course he continues to enjoy gardening and travelling with his wife, Penny.

Proudest moments and final thoughts Sir Max has had many proud moments; watching ‘the British armed forces do something tremendously well in the Falklands’, ‘reviving the Daily Telegraph which was on the verge of bankruptcy’ when he became its Editor for over 10 years and most importantly ‘realizing how fortunate I am to have a job that I love and enjoy doing every day’.

education ”Grandad had 83 apps open at once!” My daughter marvelled. “And 25 browser tabs.”

Take your Tablets! My father, a lively Septuagenarian, bought himself a tablet recently and my teens have been training him to use it. They have discovered that nothing highlights the differences between the generations more than electronic equipment. These are a few things they’ve discovered, which might prove useful for anyone else about to drag their elderly parents into the 21st Century.

Granddad did not know that ‘Dot’ means full-stop,” My eldest son found him trying to get to wwwdotrspbdotorgdotuk, to renew his membership online! Downloading apps was not a problem. Closing them though was not intuitive. ”Granddad had 83 apps open at once!” My daughter marvelled. “And 25 browser tabs.” Gnarled, insensitive arthritic fingers make for tricky tapping and zooming, so Granddad bought a chunky stylus, which can be used like a pen, and is more controllable.

Now I’m certainly not suggesting that all 70-year-old are luddites, but we are so techno-savvy these days that it’s easy to forget many elderly people are simply not steeped in the same electronic culture. A couple of months into owning his tablet my father is getting on famously, and it’s certainly brought him closer to his IT support team AKA his grandchildren! By Sarah Davey

He was very naïve when it came to internet security and had to be taught about fraud, passwords, SPAM and phishing.

Go Ape

fantastic fun!

It was a grey and cold Saturday when we adventured to Go Ape. I took my children, Luciana and Edward, so I could get their feedback on the experience. Our day started when we were greeted by a very friendly team. In fact, every single person that we met from start to finish was so helpful and had the desire to make our day a special one. After checking in, we were taken to an area where we were given quick and detailed instructions on safety. We had the pleasure of meeting Johnny who has been with Go Ape for a few years and could confidently say that I would have a great time. The briefing was extensive, but not boring or too long; just enough information to make us feel safe. However, at that point I was beginning to feel terrified as I could see the height of the ropes but nevertheless I was prepared to go through and experience the adventure. The safety training was provided for a group of different ages and I must say that the youngest (approx 10 years old) seemed to know exactly what to do and could not wait to get going!

The Challenges Following an excellent safety briefing, we embarked on a couple of adrenaline raising and fun filled hours. Actually, when you are up there, you have a choice of easy and harder

THe bUZZ_FINAl_JSO_220114.indd 19

routes. You can do slightly more tricky routes once you start on the course, so the level is your call. My advice, especially for ladies, would be to take gloves regardless of the weather and leave nerves at home!

ve nt u re th e fo re st a do n e is ry th at e ve out ta lkin g a b

The first ropes are challenging but not impossible – there is a great family atmosphere with all groups helping one another to get across and give tips.

Fitness not required Once you get over the first and second courses, you feel that the difficulty is not too extreme. I am not the fittest person in the world, but found it not too challenging, although my limbs ached the next day! Another positive is that it doesn’t take hours and we just felt it was the right length of time from start to finish. Of course, it depends on how quick you want to get around and how many people are ahead of you. There are also nice trails in the area for bikers, walkers or equestrians. The only down side is the parking and you should allow enough time to park if you have booked a specific time for the briefing. There is a height restriction of greater than 1.4m. My advice is for anyone that is looking to add something new to their weekend routine or a family day out during the holidays, it is definitely worth considering as an exciting alternative.

Book online at http://goape.co.uk /days-out/bracknell or call 0843 770 3290. Go Ape Bracknell opens for 2014 on the 15th of February.

The Buzz witnessed the launch of an exciting new concept in fitness that was launched by none other than the internationally renowned Bear Grylls known for his exploits as an extreme adventurer and survival expert.

Bear goes EPIC in Marlborough

Express Progressive Interval Conditioning (EPIC) is a new concept in fitness being piloted in Marlborough, Wiltshire, that is designed to transform the way people approach exercise. The concept is designed for people of all fitness capabilities and there is no age limit for the programme (parental consent for under 16s is required). EPIC is designed to take minimal time for people with busy lives who cannot always commit to traditional gyms. The concept is simple and unlike most traditional gyms, support is provided throughout by a team of trained instructors who give guidance to all participants throughout each session. This proves to be a very popular theme for most people looking to improve levels of fitness or wanting to lose excess pounds. Each workout has been engineered to improve balance, coordination, power, aerobic capacity, muscular strength and endurance to maximize lean body composition. You should not be worried if you

THe bUZZ_FINAl_JSO_220114.indd 21

don’t think this is for you as the programme and training methods can be adapted to suit all levels of fitness, shapes and sizes of individuals.

in various challenging situations. Bear is truly a fitness fanatic and his energy and enthusiasm for the concept are enough to convince anyone that if you are wishing to get fitter this year or are wishing for a more economical option to traditional gyms then this has to be an option worth considering.

If you are looking for a new method to get fit or to shed pounds, The Buzz believes that EPIC is well worth considering as a low cost, easy to follow option that focuses on the whole body in a way that traditional gyms often struggle to achieve.

The concept is planned to be launched at other venues in the near future and residents in the Marlborough area are at the forefront of a concept that is planned for other UK locations and abroad. We witnessed the impressive EPIC Team of instructors led by Personal Training Expert Natalie Summers, who as well as being a fitness coach at the centre, is an author and entrepreneur. We were very impressed by the training routines all carried out to backdrop videos showing the very impressive Bear

While spending your emergency fund wouldn’t be the most prudent of moves, if you have a little money to spare in a down economy there are a number of good reasons to consider buying antiques and collectibles.

an antiques shop is perfect. It is the perfect place to check out what you really want to collect. You can be confident that the dealers will stand by and guarantee their items.

Do not think that a specialist dealer’s shop is above your price range. If you are truly interested, dealers will share their knowledge. Also, they know what an item is worth. They will have researched and travelled to find a special piece, which may seem expensive, but in the future may prove to be the best investment. Always buy the best you can. Precedent says it will invariably hold (or increase) its value better than a lesser equivalent. If you are a new collector or someone who has limited time,

Antiques tend to hold their value Unlike newly produced furniture, decorative items, fashion accessories, and other goods, quality antiques and collectibles in excellent condition have a tendency to appreciate in value. Most manufactured goods become “used” merchandise once they

leave the retailer’s showroom reselling later for just pennies on the pound in comparison to antiques. Quality antiques and collectibles viably hold value or appreciate with the passing of time. This means when

the economy turns around, you could very likely sell vintage goods for as much or more than you paid for them without the wild market ride to reap gains other types of investments might offer. Of course, it’s important to remember that antiques don’t provide a guaranteed return. Overall though, most antiques and collectibles maintain value and tend to appreciate, sometimes dramatically, over time.

Famous and frequently starring on TV, Hungerford’s many antiques specialists attract visitors to the town every day. Many residents also find fine historic and traditional furnishings, objets d’art and antiquities for their homes in the antique shops and centres too.

Selling Antiques? We are always looking to purchase jewellery items of any value and condition whatever the quantity, especially antique and signed pieces - cartier etc. We also buy antique silverware in any condition and complete collections why sell @ auction and wait for payment when we pay you instantly.

Watermark

Set in Thatcham, the Watermark restaurant is a venue that many local residents may not be familiar with, as it is part of the Regency Park Hotel often overlooked by locals as a venue for fine dining. However, we had a fabulous meal prepared by a top French Chef and hosted by Phil and Andrew, who were friendly and very professional. Laurent Guyon, the Head Chef, has prepared a tantalizing menu with a visual feast and delight for the palate. My partner chose Sticky Shallot Tartlet with Goat’s Curd and Girolles, followed by Sea Bass, whilst I chose the Scallops with Squid Rings

and Haunch of Venison for my main course. The starters were sensational. The tartlet was packed with flavour with an astounding caramelized onion filling and a delicious creamy goat’s cheese topping. My scallops and squid were cooked to perfection and beautifully spiced to tantalize the taste buds. The main courses did not disappoint with the sea bass being perfectly cooked and seasoned whilst my venison was tender, succulent and beautifully delivered as requested, medium-rare. The wine list is extensive and interesting with prices that will not upset the bank manager. I would certainly recommend

some of the fabulous fine dessert wines for a special treat from different countries such as Australia, South Africa, France and Hungary. We had superb desserts and the words used to describe my partner’s Mango Crème Brule are not suitable for this publication. Fabulous! Thank you Laurent for a truly great evening. If you would like to impress someone for Valentine’s Day or have a family meal on Mothering Sunday, then I would definitely suggest the Watermark restaurant.

Nutty Heart Biscuits Ingredients

Method

6 oz / 170g Ground Almonds or Hazelnuts

Mix the ground nuts, flour, cinnamon and salt together in a mixing bowl, set aside.

6oz / 170g Plain flour 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt 4oz / 115g butter (at room temperature) 31/2oz / 100g caster sugar 1 medium egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional) Raspberry or strawberry jam Icing sugar for dusting Heart-shaped cookiecutters in two sizes; one small, one larger.

In a large bowl beat the butter and caster sugar together until light and fluffy, this may be done by hand or in a food mixer. In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg with the vanilla and almond extract if using. Beat half the egg mixture into the creamed sugar and butter, then beat in the other half. Continue to beat until combined. Add all the dry ingredients and mix gently by hand until all the ingredients have been combined. Divide the dough in half, shape each piece into a disc, place in a polythene bag and chill for 2 hours in the fridge. If you want to make this ahead of the day, the dough can be stored in the fridge for 3 days or 2 months in the freezer).

Preheat the oven to 190C / Gas Mark 5, and line two trays with greaseproof paper or a silicone baking mat. Lightly flour the work surface and roll out the first piece of dough until it is about 1/4 inch / 0.5cm thick. Cut out as many heart-shapes as the dough can fit. Gather up the scraps with the second disc of dough and continue to roll out the dough and cut out the cookies. Cut out the centres of half the cookies using a smaller heart-shaped cutter. Transfer the cookies to the baking sheets and bake for 12 - 14 minutes or until the cookies are golden, dry, and firm to the touch. These cookies don’t spread so don’t have to be spaced out too far apart. Remove from the oven and allow to cool while the second batch is baking. Heat up some jam in the microwave or on the stove top until it is warm. Spread half to a teaspoon-full of jam on the cookie and place a cookie with a cut-out centre on top. Lightly dust with powdered sugar before serving. If you don’t want the jam to be sprinkled with icing sugar, you can dust the cookie-toppers with the cut-out centres first, then place them on top of the jammy bases before serving. 31

Reiki is a form of energy healing that requires no specific spiritual alignment. Reiki is an ancient treatment, revived in Japan in the early 1900’s for relieving aches, stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.

We have opened our doors on Mondays in both Kingsclere and Inglewood as an alternative health centre. Wash Your Mouth Out! Opinion is a divided even among members of the dental profession about the usefulness of mouthwash. Gum disease begins with plaque. This is a film of very sticky bacteria on the teeth which, if not removed, causes gum disease. Because it is so sticky plaque can only be removed from teeth with a brush or dental floss. Mouthwash can never replace good brushing. A study in The Journal of Clinical Dentistry this year found antiseptic mouthwash used twice a day reduced the build-up of plaque and gum disease over a six month period. Mouthwash makes teeth ‘more slippy’ so the sticky plaque finds it difficult to adhere, which in turn means your mouth feels fresher for longer. Bad breath (halitosis) is caused when excess bacteria emit excess gas. Pockets of bacteria can lurk around fillings, ill-fitting crowns and impacted wisdom teeth. Halitosis requires treatment from a dentist or hygienist but a mouthwash can help. Use one with ingredients such as chlorine

dioxide, which kills the volatile sulphur compounds that cause foul odour. Many mouth washes contain alcohol, which has been linked to oral cancers in some studies. Alcohol can exacerbate bad breath because of its drying properties, and because it is quite harsh it may also cause stinging. Most dentists and hygienists agree that if you use mouthwash it should be alcohol-free. Finally, most of us don’t hold mouthwash in our mouths long enough for it to work. The optimal time is 30-60 seconds. As part of a good dental hygiene routine mouthwashes are helpful but they will never replace the mechanical action of a toothbrush and floss for getting teeth and gums really clean.

The reason for the decline is complex but largely down to us and our gardening habits so we need to redress the situation. The old myth of feeding bread and milk does not help, as sadly, milk kills and bread contains only few nutrients. Hedgehogs rarely have fleas and if they do, they are specific to hedgehogs and would not attack you or your pets and therefore never use dog or cat flea treatments as they are at best unnecessary and at worst lethal. Do your fences have concrete bases? If so, no hedgehog can get through. These animals

Hedgehogs need to travel 2-3km a night to get enough to eat and find enough mates to prevent inbreeding; give them a route through with a 15cm hole in fence panels or gates. When installing new fencing use concrete bases with animal tunnels as they are available. It will be a great idea to leave a small area of your garden untidy by brushing fallen leaves into a heap. Have a log pile to retain the area and see what

These wonderful little creatures will help you deal with garden pests. You can attract hedgehogs and keep them around by supplementary feeding and watering. Make a feeding station from a plastic storage box with a 10cm hole cut in one end and provide a dish of dry cat food each day. Shallow dishes of water around the borders will keep them hydrated as well as helping the birds.

Britain’s National animal is in trouble. Anyone 50+ will remember seeing hedgehogs in abundance at night, but no more. From a population of 35 million in 1955 we now have less than a million. If this decline continues we will lose them altogether in 10 years.

a good Catastrophe By Sir Max Hastings CATASTROPHE tells the story of how Europe went to war in 1914, precipitating the first of the 20th century’s great global tragedies. Using his familiar blend of top-down and bottom-up testimony from a host of witnesses in Serbia and Austria, Russia and France, Germany and Britain, Max Hastings creates an unforgettable portrait of the continent’s descent to war; then, of the titanic battlefield clashes which followed.

Almost a Boffin By EE Vielle To continue to live life to the full at 100 years old is quite amazing! In this exhilarating, exciting and at times emotional book EE Vielle takes us through a life which involved several different careers. His early childhood memories draw you into a forgotten world. The threat of hunger during the Great Depression led him away from university to the RAF and flying 150 types of aircraft, not without incident!

during which on 22 August France lost 27,000 dead, the highest toll in a single day of the entire conflict - not excluding the Somme. He follows the Russian army to disaster at Tannenburg, the Serb and Austrian campaigns, the British retreat from Mons and first big battle at Ypres. He concludes with the Christmas truces, when the struggle on the Western Front had lapsed into the stalemate which persisted for four bloody years. Hastings says: ‘I hope to offer readers some answers, at least, to the huge question: ‘what happened to Europe in 1914?’ Controversially, in its early chapters, his book challenges the view of some modern historians that British participation in the struggle was unnecessary; that as well as being a tragedy, the war was also futile. The author says: ‘It seems absurd to imagine that if Britain had stayed neutral, a Germany victorious on the continent would then have allowed the Empire to have continued to dominate the world’s financial system and its oceans.

He guides you through an unexpected account of WW11 which includes mysterious happenings between scientists and some, to date publicized, treacherous acts with far reaching implications. There is still a twinkle in the eye and an unending supply of jokes and stories told in a compelling manner. We can see now the vision he had in his previous books and one has to ask what his future is now? He will tell you. . .

SeaBEAN By Sarah Holding Heat-Sensitive Cover Gives Children’s Adventure Novel the Magic Touch. As well as enthralling young readers with its gripping story of adventure, travel and heroism, SeaBEAN is breaking new ground in the literary marketplace with its thermochromic cover, which changes when touched. Education and literary experts constantly urge children to put down their video games and pick up a book, and this new children’s adventure encourages just that with its interactive heat-sensitive cover. Sarah Holding is inviting the world to judge her book, by its cover. The mysteriously dark cover of the first book in the trilogy reveals a dramatic seascape image when touched or rubbed with a warm hand. As it cools the image disappears and slowly reverts to its original darkness, evoking the interactive outer surface of the futuristic craft that features prominently in the novel. Although the cutting-edge technology of the cover is capturing the attention of critics around the world, young reviewers haven’t let the excitement distract them from the quality of the story and can’t wait for SeaWAR and SeaRISE.

Francis Baily (1774-1844) Born on the site of what is now 60 Northbrook Street. After a career on the Stock Exchange he became a leading astronomer, being elected four times President of the Royal Astronomical Society. His major work was in compiling star catalogues, observing eclipses, and measuring the density of the earth. He lived in London but is buried in the family vault at Thatcham, and is rightly claimed by Thatcham as one of their own.

George (“Beau”) Brummell (1778-1840) Lived at Donnington Grove (built 1763) until his father’s death in 1795. Through his personal example as a member of London Society, and his friendship and influence with the Prince of Wales (later King George IV), he transformed the accepted standards of male dress and grooming. He insisted on well-tailored and well-fitted suits of subdued colours, a clean shirt and cravat, and personal cleanliness. Falling out with the Prince of Wales, he spent his patrimony and died penniless in Calais.
