Marshmallow is a new age digital diary that keeps a record of memories through a multi sensory platform. Nowadays, many people are too focused on how society views them, the very surface and shallow image of ourselves. Connection to our inner selves has been lost in translation. Therefore, we can begin by asking ourselves what can we do to bring back all those good habits into our daily lives? The solution is sim- ple. It is a diary that integrates technol- ogy and a social network platform to conveniently keep recorded memories, helping people to keep track of their real identity. www.jacquelinebaedesigns.com/ marshmalllow

4

Marshmallow was created in collaboration with Jane Park (graphic design student) and Inae Song (Interaction design student) at Art Center College of Design, Pasadena in summer, 2013.

Emotion Recognition

Heart rate variability(HRV)

Facial expressions can be considered as aspects both of an emotional response and of social communication. Perceptual processing of faces draws on cortices in occipital and temporal lobes that construct detailed representations from the configuration of facial features.

HRV is related to emotional arousal. High-frequency (HF) activity has been found to decrease under conditions of acute time pressure and emotional strain and elevated state anxiety, presumably related to focused attention and motor inhibition. HRV has been shown to be reduced in individuals reporting a greater frequency and duration of daily worry.

Few minutes later, a letter from another mother in the same situation gets delivered to Heather. It is a diary written by a mother who had a child with Leukemia. It was about her regretting for not having a more thankful moment with her child when shev was alive.

Heather reads the mother’s diaries and she realizes that there is no time for her to wish for things that she couldn’t have.

Another mother’s diary changed Heather’s mind. And the next day when she waked up, she was just glad that she has another day with Anne where she is happy and brave.

Everything inspires her and is very helpful for her career. She is thankful that she is living in this time. All the information can easily be acquired and easy to record and save.

Her place is on the rooftop in down town, Los Angeles. When she got the place she was so happy, she really like her place, because of the scenery of the downtown. She knows that the city is only beautiful when she has distance away. The fancy night scene gives her reward for her effort and also it doesn’t feel isolated.

When she comes home, she called her place “skycave”, she doesn’t want to answer the phone or doing social networking. She wants to be unplugged all the social media or digital device that she spent a lot of time.

During the daytime, she was very tired of all the media she feed or watched. So, she wants to spent her night time only for herself very quite and valuable.

She believes that writing down her thought is straightening up her thought. She expresses her emotion or writes down her secret that she couldn’t have told even her fiancé.

Difficulty of writing The shape of the ball is inviting and seems comfortable to hold and write, but it is actually hard to write more than a sentence with this device.

Unconsciously interact with ball When holding the ball, my hand unconsciouly roll and throw ball into my other hand. I continuously want to bring the ball with me.

Emotional shape of the ball I am afraid that people will have preconception on my personality because I use this device. The device is too emotional that it makes me feel shy and embarrasing to bring it around with me.

Complicated Steps The Jar, the lid and the ball and the vertual balls. There are so many devices that I have to care about, why can’t there be just Jar and the ball?

Mobility Issue Love to bring this device with me, but where do I carry this device? Either in the bag or in the pocket, but it seems like I am brining this device that phones can do.

1st pitch

Marshmallow

Visually Seeing Diaries Love the fact that I can see the diaries visually. I can imagine myself seeing this diary jar on my bed when all the lights are off at night. Before I get into the sleep, I can see myself looking at the jar and have a self reflection time.

Capturing Moments Using device, it provides me the time that I can be away from my cellphone. It gives me the time to appreciate things that are around me and things that I feel physically and emotionally. I really appreciate the difficulty that this device provides me.

Reliable Security Having my diaries not saved in the cloud but just in the jar, the ball and the disk makes me relief. I surely can rely on the security of this device. Not only that but also the fact that this diary can be only opened when all three devices and I am there to interact with the diaries makes me comfort.

– scenario for Marshmallow

Jessica lives in California. She is a college student. It’s been almost a year after she left her hometown North Carolina.

Few days from today, she will be flying off to North Carolina to see her family And spend thanksgiving holiday with them.

She is all excited to see her families and friends. She records her mood every night until her flight date. Today, the weather is good. The sun is shining brightly without a cloud in the sky. Her excitement has reached so high as well. She is now on the plane. She sat next to the window. In few minutes

she will be arriving at North Carolina, her sweet home. She sees her town from the window; she sees the shopping mall that she went to, Church and school that she went to. She captures the scenery from the window. She finally realizes that she is now really at her hometown.

She gets on the taxi as soon as she arrived, She then went to her home secretively to surprise her family. She knocks the door and Mariette is so surprised. The first word that that Jessica says to Mariette is “Mom I missed your apple pie so much” Mariette gives a big hug to Jessica. And she runs to the kitchen and hurries to bake a pie for her only daughter, Jessica. Jessica complains to Mariette, how she cannot bake like she does. So Jessica pulls out Marshmallow and takes snapshots of the baking process. After Mariette baked the pie, she calls aunt that lives next door. Aunt’s family and Jessica’s family

gathers in one table and shares the pie. Jessica pulls out the Marshmallow to take the photo of her and her families. She then places the Marshmallow and turns it to the voice recording mode She records the noise of her families talking and laughing. She wants to capture this moment at least through noise, so that when she goes back to California, she can at least remember this sweet moment through listening to her record.

1st pitch

Marshmallow

She goes to her room. She feels the emotion that she has never felt before. As she walks in to the room, she slowly remembers the past memories that she encountered. She pulls out one of the past diary that she used to write when she was little.

She finds a letter that her old friend wrote to her when she decides to move to continue her study. She then writes a diary, writing down her emotions, and what she encountered today.

Few days after, she flies back to California. As soon as she arrives home, she drops Marshmal-

low on to the jar. The diaries that she wrote in the past three days drops in the jar.

113

Before she goes to sleep, she places the Marshmallow jar next to her bed, Looking at the emotion balls in the jar,

she rotates the Marshmallow to select one of the emotion balls. It is the record that she did when her aunt’s family came over to eat Apple pie that her mom baked.

She hears the giggles and noises of her families. She lets the record play, and she falls sleep, hoping that she can meet her family in her dream.

Emotion is like water-coloring.

Each state of emotion exhibits different color and in one day, one person’s emotion changes from joy, anger, sadness to peace. The transition of emotion change is just like how water color smears on a white water color paper. The transitional gradation of emotion is represented in this order.

Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Yellow color corresponds to the joyful feeling recorded in the device. As the ball drops into the jar, the character of the ball reveals. It bounces and jumps around with other yellow balls in the jar.

Green has great healing power. It is the most restful color for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. As the ball with the green emotion drops, the ball exhibits its character by slowly drowning to the bottom of the jar just like how a ball drowns in the water.

Blue creates feelings of melancholy, negativity, sadness, self-righteousness, and self-centeredness. The ball with the sad emotion exhibits a blue color and it visualizes its character by dropping fast to the bottom of the jar just like how a heavy stone drops.

Pink is the color of passion, romance and love. It signifies joy, sexuality and sensitivity. A ball that carries the romance story will represent its emotion to the pink color. The ball with pink color reacts just like how lovers act. It attracts to other pink balls and dances around in the jar.

Red is a very emotionally intense color. It enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It is associated with vigor, anger and madness. The red balls that carries the anger emotion buzzes, wiggles and vibrates and harshly clashes to the surface of the jar.

We, marshmallow feel your emotion.
