Catherine, 32:
‘Jonah’s been using it twice a day, for up to half an hour, since he was four months old,’
Interview Analysis:
‘It’s incredibly useful in getting him to settle at night, something we’d been struggling to do.
When those comments were reported, what surprised me was the absence of a slightest whisper of concern that a toddler, who hasn’t yet mastered language, has been so exposed to technology he already has favourite computer games. But that silence is, itself, telling. Instead of traditional playthings like train sets and dolls, computer tablets are fast becoming children’s favourite toys, and many parents see nothing wrong with it.

Maria, Child Education Expert; Interview Analysis:
“The sort of interaction babies and toddlers need is interaction with real people and the real-life environment. That’s how they develop communication skills and learn to co-ordinate and control their whole body, not just jabbing with a finger at a screen.”
Having many children exposed to technologic devices such as ipad, there are toddlers coming into schools lacking basic mucle strength or the balancing skills to stand on one leg. Technology is making it more difficult for children to learn to read and write.

Megna, 34:
Interview Analysis: Including Megna, they believe that today’s childhoods are not worse or harmful - but just different. She also thinks that she is rather pleased with the fact that he is already eager to move onto other things. But really the question is why are parents encouraging children into cyber world before they even know there is real one to discover.
“I worried I was a bad mother — I didn’t know any other mum using the iPad to the extent we were. I was conscious my son wasn’t playing with wooden educational toys instead. But then I realised every parent was using it in different ways.” “Nobody likes to admit it — you feel like you’re being a lazy parent — but an iPad is convenient; it holds a child’s attention.”

“They can use them until the battery runs out. The biggest fight is for the power cord.”
Interview Analysis:
“There was no consoling him.”
Now that Jacob is 10, he typically plays on his own iPod Touch for 90% of the drive to Orange County, Calif., a trip the family makes frequently, Mr. Marson said. Meanwhile, his daughter, Hannah, who is 14, plays games on her iPhone.

Market Trend: Young Children and the Technology Trend: Toddlers nad Tablets Unite A recent survey conducted by PBS reports that a staggering 70 percent of parents allow their toddlers and young kids to use their iPad. The same polled parents have downloaded an average of eight apps designed specifically for kids. Which isn’t a surprise considering we see children playing with digital devices wherever we go: restaurants, waiting rooms, nestled in their car seats, on the play structure at the park. The job of parents is not to deprive them but to help them manage their consumption.

Market Trend: Merging Technology with Play
Physical interaction with the world and the involvement of all five senses—taste, touch, smell, hearing, seeing—is the way young children learn. We can begin to know what they understand and how they perceive their world through their constructions and we use that understanding to design a program that will build their skills. For the young child, the concrete and visible is real. Being able to hold and direct a pencil or paintbrush is not just about being able to form specific shapes that can then be turned into particular letters, but it’s also about gaining control of one’s own movements and making connections to others. It’s also a starting place for literacy and for the knowledge that speech and words are tools for mastering our reality.

Froebel’s Theory
“Treat Child as Child” "This system though intellectual, is truly infantile; it treats the child as a child; encourages him to think for himself; teaches him by childish toys and methods, gradually to develop in action his own idea, to tell his own story and to listen to that of others; there is no use of hard names, whatever is said and whatever is done is totally and altogether such as belongs to a child"
