We are a people that have seen it all—a people who have lived 100 lives in one lifetime. Charles Darwin said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” Adapting may be a part of every human’s DNA, but for us, it is a way of life—biology doesn’t dictate us to do so, but rather we take the initiative by ourselves. Circumstances have been imposed on us, but we and only we impose their outcomes on them. That’s why this issue, we celebrate Lebanese such as Chahe Yerevanian, The entrepreneur of real estate and renowned artist, Michel Elefteriades; and Lebanese ‘sisters doing it for themselves’ pioneer, Yasmeen Borro. It isn’t how many times we’ve fallen that makes us a people who does it no matter what—but the number of times we’ve risen again. And that number is bigger than the number of times we’ve fallen. Amid it all, we did it and continue to do it in style, with pizzazz and looking like a million bucks. Why? Because we are Lebanese. Here’s to Lebanon. POPE’S HARLEY SELLS FOR $284000
A Harley-Davidson motorbike that briefly belonged to Pope Francis was sold to a mystery European buyer for 210,000 euros at a highprofile auction in Paris. “It’s a record for a post-vintage motorbike, from the 21st century,” said Bonhams France, the auction house. Including fees, the unidentified buyer paid a total of 241,500 euros to obtain the bike. The US motorbike maker gave the 1,585cc Dyna Super Glide to the pope in June 2013 to mark the brand’s 110th anniversary, and while the pope never rode it, he signed it before donating it to Roman Catholic charity Caritas Roma. The funds from the sale will go towards the restoration of the charity’s hostel and soup kitchen at Rome’s Termini railway station. A jacket that was also given to the pope by Harley-Davidson was snapped up for 57,500 euros, including fees.

Byblos Bank launched a new Credit Card designed especially for members of Labora Association during a ceremony held at Byblos Bank Headquarters in Ashrafieh. This new MasterCard Titanium Credit Card offers privileges and services such as competitive interest rates and automatic enrollment in the Bank’s Akram Program, the most generous card loyalty program in Lebanon. Thierry Mugler may have chosen Georgia May Jagger as the star of a future campaign for its Angel fragrance, according to a rumor reported by Women’s Wear Daily.The rumor could prove to be true, as Georgia May Jagger attended the second performance of the designer’s show — Mugler Follies — at the Comédia in Paris in December. Jagger, who is highly in demand at the moment, could become the eighth brand ambassador for the fragrance in the starshaped bottle. If this is the case, she will be following in the footsteps of her mother, Jerry Hall, who represented the fragrance in the late 1990s. Eva Mendes is the current face of Angel. Her contract is set to expire in 2014.

Chahe YEREVANIAN Chairman-C.E.O of SAYFCO HOLDING, the leading real estate developer in Lebanon
A man beyond measures, awarded as the Man of the Year title for inspiring the Lebanese youth and encouraging them towards a better future. In less than ten years, he was able to reestablish SAYFCO HOLDING after it was initially named Ara Yerevanian Establishment and was founded in 1960s by the late Ara Yerevanian, former Member of the Lebanese Parliament. In 2004, SAYFCO HOLDING and all of its subsidiaries were established. Mr. Chahe Yerevanian talks more about the above and beyond the success of SAYFCO HOLDING. 26

ow did you break into the real estate industry and what were your motives?
My father has been in the business before leaving Lebanon in 1982. After 13 years abroad, the family decided to come back to Lebanon in 1995 and re-launch a real estate development company. I had completed my university studies in Paris and been working as a financial consultant. It is thanks to my father’s encouragement and incessant motivating spirit that I became part of the business. After he passed away in 2000, I wanted to create an international real estate name of worldwide reputation. While the company used to sell around 50 units per year in the past, SAYFCO HOLDING is now selling 500 units per month, owing up to the expectations that pushed me to found it in 2004.
In every industry, there are specific challenges. What are the pros and cons for SAYFCO HOLDING? It is a fact that every business faces specific challenge, and its even more challenging in a country that lacks the bare minimum of healthy grounds. Lebanon has no government and constantly suffers from political bickering and major security problems. The biggest concern for the time being is how to establish trust with potential but reluctant clients, and invite them to invest despite the current discouraging situation. This is why SAYFCO holding offers compelling prices and flexible payment facilities. If you had the chance to change three governmental rules in real estate, what would they be and why? I wouldn’t change any rule in real estate, but I would definitely build open the current potential by giving certain incentives, from the ultimate perspective that encouraging people to invest in the real-estate field would serve its purpose and fulfill the growth we look forward to. What are the three characteristics for a successful real estate investor? Courage, vision and a strong balance sheet are what make a real estate investor more successful than others. One only needs a quick glance at our numbers in order to realize that these characteristics are the core of our company’s success.

Dealing with clients can be intriguing, but same time it’s considered challenging. If you had to describe the Lebanese Real Estate typical client in few words, what would they be? There’s a typical real estate mind: it’s that of a smart buyer who knows what he wants, and masters the art of negotiation to get the best possible deal.This is by far an innate trait that runs in the client’s blood. You either have it or you don’t. Many real estate investors learn from previous experience to avoid certain situations. What kind of situation you would not hesitate to put yourself into? Challenge is behind Sayfco’s name and success. Challenge is what defines us and intrigues us. I would not hesitate to put myself in any situation that stimulates me. 28
If you had the chance to go back to age 16, what’s the one thing you would change and why? I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason. If I was to change one thing, and one thing only, my whole path would have drastically changed and I would not have reached the present in this manner. This is why I would not change a thing, for any little step in the past has taken me to the present: a present I live with utmost contentment and satisfaction. Like many others, people keep changing career path after discovering their passion in somewhere else. If you had the opportunity to change careers, what would it be and why?
time. How do you balance your time between family and work? Weekday is for work and weekends and holidays are for the family. As simple as that. This is the ideal balance I believe is behind success in business and family lives. I can’t but assert that these two affect and complete each other and are essentially unbreakable. It usually takes two to make a successful marriage, how do you evaluate your wife’s support as a partner in life? What makes her a perfect match for you?
If I was to choose a different career, I would have been an actor.
A successful marriage is one that faces good and bad days and overcomes whatever obstacle it encounters. Our mutual support is key to our prosperity, especially that our partnership is concerned, first and foremost, with parenthood: our children’s wellbeing is our priority.

SAYFCO is working hard to promote and sell 5,000 units per year within the next few years to come, with the ultimate goal of becoming an international name in the field and cross the borders towards worldwide fame. Having all eggs in one basket is not an option here, so if you had to give all what you earned up and keep one thing, what would it be? It is home, beyond any shed of doubt, the roof above my family. I can get back anything else in no time. Do you think you have some hidden talent you’re not aware of it? Of course I do, but as I am unaware of it, I may not tell what it is for now. Can you give us three words that describe Flair? Seduction. Passion. Love.

To which extent do you think your partnership contributes to Sayfco’s success?
Elegance is in simplicity, and not necessarily in extravagance. Artificiality and overly imposed “beauty” undermine elegance and take away its core asset.
Our relationship is based on mutual support and productive efforts. The balance between family and career is dear to both our hearts and is the critical factor that makes both worlds constantly grow. It suffices to say that encouraging my husband’s career ultimately and evidently means working for the best of the family. Like many other women who are into luxury brands, if you had to choose the best brand that describes your taste the most, what would it be and why?
If you had to describe yourself from an outsider point of view, what are the three main characteristics that describe you well? Patient, caring and goodhearted. What is the most exciting milestone to your family? And how do you spend your leisure time with your family? Every single day is a milestone. Whether we’re all together at home, or travelling around the world, the excitement is the same, as I am surrounded with my husband and daughter and twins, and sharing every possible moment together. This is the kind of milestone that always makes me cherish the present and look forward to the future. How do you regard your husband’s career and deal with its overwhelming conditions? To say the least, I am proud of Sayfco and the man behind it. There was never a point where I stopped encouraging my husband. I value the incessantly growing efforts he puts into his work, and it only takes two to realize that perseverance is ultimately about our family’s prosperity and children’s future.

Do you agree to the fact that we are entering the women leading era? You said it yourself. Women are dominating the world with their intellect. I can assert that we have already entered the era you’re referring to, and I can only anticipate even more female contribution that would drastically reshape the world we live in and challenge the imposed norms we were once too afraid or too reckless to face.

An author and composer of more than 120 songs for European and Arab artists – Michel Elefteriades is not only the pioneer of World Music fusion, but also a music producer and arranger. His creations are known to count among the Arab world’s most successful musical experiments of the last decade. Success has no limits when it comes to the founder of Mediterraneo Byblos International Festival; he’s also the founder of Music Hall night club, which is specialized in cultural showbiz through a unique concept. Elefteriades’ talent never ceased to amaze his audience; therefore his belief in making a difference in Arab music world has reached its peeks. He’s also the founder and co-owner of Ele.Records- a Warner Music label that already produced over 15 albums.

ichel Elefteriades is known to be a strong doer, when life tosses challenges at your shoulders, how do you stand out in front of your competitors?
I’m not the kind of person who’s afraid of failing. I’m very content with what I have and I don’t get intimidated by what others think of my work. When you’re a trendsetter, you won’t be looking at what others are doing. I’m a strong soul with a good will and I proved to my competitors that I’m a risk taker and up-tochallenges. Despite of all the circumstances that I may face in life, I’m always prepared for the unexpected from my competitors. I have my own common ground and no one can mess with my work.
Sometimes, society limits our options. Do you think people should follow the society’s restricted values or follow their passion to reach success? I don’t follow society’s values, because I don’t believe of following anything. Unlike others who lately talked about the inside outrage story of Jackie Chamoun’s scandal. It’s like a sexual revolution and instead of taking care of their political issues; the country is concerned to hear details about the scandal. Alternatively speaking, in society the whole country speaks one topic, same applies to trend in fashion - all women look the same such as, (same makeup, fashion, and est.) whereas in Europe they go with what looks good on them. Hence, I like to think differently, come up with something completely new and make it worth watching. I can easily lose interest in whatever is out there if all people are trying it. A passionate soul like yours with many interests might have similar sole hobbies….Do you have any sideline hobby in mind? I’m a collector of precious stones… It all depends if the stone catches my sight or not. I don’t believe in stone’s energy, I just buy it as a collector. How did you start your career? And what made you study fine art? Like many people who don’t know what to study when they go into university, I studied fine arts because I thought it was easier than other majors. On the other hand, I always wanted to be in the art field-then I had to leave the country for a Military service. When back
in Lebanon, I had to go back to continue my master degree in Graphic design at Alba University because other universities were hard to get in. George haddad helped me a lot to pass the exams and graduate on time. Any special past memories come to mind when you listen to music? I grew up in a house of two musician parents, who used to sing and play music. I remember when my parents used to teach us music and we used to enjoy every beat of it - these are the musical memories that come to mind. Also, my grandparents are originally Greek and my grandmother was a musician. If Michel Elefteriades had a chance to go back to a different musical era, which music era would you go to? Each period has its beauty, I like both eras, the 70s and the 80’s. Now there’s this revival to old music and we keep listening to it over and over again. If you had to choose between a producer or music arranger… which one would you choose and why? Brutally honest, I like both because in a way, they both have similar outcome. They say, ‘’ you can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.’’ From where do you draw your inspiration? I always value privacy and I love solitude where I can be relaxed without phone calls and irritating people talking on the phone around me. I also, hate long chats over the phone. Since we are technology driven, it’s hard to maintain the same expected success in the market like the old days… In your opinion, how do you find the market nowadays? Back in the 90s, they used to sell a lot of musical records, unlike nowadays where you can download everything from the internet for cheap rates. Nonetheless, musical instruments have also changed; we used to play Korg electronic musical instruments, unlike nowadays where you rarely see it. What makes a voice stand out and how do you discover talent?
You can’t specify it in that sense, it’s like you’re asking me what makes a woman beautiful! It’s all about the whole package and emotive communication with the art. For instance, I hate Celine Dion - I hated her character and body language. So the person might have the voice but not necessarily to make it due to his performance on stage and maybe for some stressful reasons, he might not do as well as he did in the backstage. You know six languages… which one would you like to listen to in music the most? No doubt, I’d like to listen to Spanish songs because the sound is soft to the ears and it has special rhythm. Conversely, I believe that everything is connected to revolting stories except Spanish songs. You were a judge at X- factor… what’s your opinion to be compared as Simon Cowl? Luckily enough, I simply fit the characteristics they were looking for as Simon Cowl’s personality. At that time, we didn’t have many programs like that except super star. Frankly speaking, I told one contestant on air that the program is a waste of time.The studio was shocked that I was brutally honest. Nowadays, everyone wants to be someone else and to follow others which sometimes creates conflicts with what you have and leads to stress and depression then you end-up with health problems. As a producer of Coke Studio, a music television series in the Middle East and North Africa, what makes the television series stand out next to other shows? Coke Studio has nothing to do with competition. I like to cut the chase by not following what others are doing. Nowadays, we have to deal with lots of stressful events in our lives, which sometimes encounter additional stress to be compared to our role model stars. Most components go under pressure of who’s prettier than the other or who sounds better than the other. Therefore, Coke Studio is far away from that concept and more about finding the talent by standing in front of the camera, (Reality TV) and all is real without any phony performance like other shows. Michel Elefteriades is the author of poems and two novels, one of them was banned in the Middle East; do you have any upcoming written novel soon? In a relatively short-time frame, the prevalence of eating disorders and obesity has been increasing. This suggests that environmental and psychological rather than metabolic or genetic causes are responsible. However, for some individuals, emotional arousal and stress leads to an excessive intake of food which if happened frequently will eventually cause weight gain and obesity. Psychosomatic theory designates these individuals as “Emotional Eaters” By eating these emotions are temporarily diminished. How to Do It... Heat the First Pan and add sesame oil, Chicken. Add all the ingredients, besides cherry tomato and prawns. Add Curry Sauce, let it cook for 2 to 3 minutes. 100 gr multi-cereal flakes with raisins 100 gr oat flakes ½ apple ½ banana 1 kiwi 2 slices pineapple 4 strawberries 800 ml liters milk 1 liter fresh cream 2 tablespoons jam or honey 100 gr fruit yogurt 50 ml orange juice
How to Do It... Cut the fresh fruits into pieces and grate the fresh apple. Put the fruits in a bowl then add the fresh orange juice and the multicereal flakes with raisins, oats, milk and cream. Add the honey and finally add the fruit yogurt. Mix ingredients together and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least two hours. Top with crushed nuts on request.

How to Do It... Put little olive oil in a frying pan then add the salted and peppered grey snapper to be fried. Cut the peeled potato into round slices and roast them for 35 minutes. How to Do It... Mix flour well with the water, sugar, salt, butter and yeast. Rest the dough for 1 hour. Shape the dough into a thin circular sheet and bake it. Mix the mayonnaise and curry, then spread on the dough. In a frying pan with little oil on a high flame cook the shredded chicken breast with the sliced onion and mushroom. Add salt and pepper then spread mixture over the dough. Add mozzarella cheese on the top and bake for 5 minutes. Add the sliced tomato and lettuce, roll and cut it into 6 pieces. Fry the potato on the spot and serve.

When they ‘made love’, there weren’t 100 candles lighting up the room and no rose petals drizzled atop the bed. The reason simply is that 100 candles would have set the house on fire and the rose petals would have been a bitch for grandma to clean up later—so grandpa throwing them on the bed in the first place would have just left grandma pissed, as she, not grandpa, would most likely be the one cleaning up afterwards.
With or Without You ‘I can’t live without you.’ ‘I need you.’ ‘You’re my everything.’ If you can’t live without him, you’ve got some serious medical condition. Most us can’t live without oxygen, and for the ill who need to walk around with a heavy oxygen tank, one can’t even begin to imagine how much more cumbersome it would be to have to tote a significant other around in order for you to exist. ‘Need’ is not ‘love’—it’s dependency. Security is one of top commonly mistaken emotion for love. ‘Needing’ someone is fulfilling an insecurity you have; ‘love’ is being fulfilled by that person because of who they are. Love has nothing to do with need—because, believe it or not, after every person you ‘loved’ and left, you still lived on. Love is ‘desire’—a yearning for someone not because you need him or her, but because you just find yourself at home with that person. But to reach that, you need to resolve your own insecurities first… On your own.
So, What is Then? The truth—it is that which cannot be known until one experiences it, and it will never be experienced the same way by any two people. The expression of love may share universal characteristics, but ‘love’ itself is like a fingerprint—imprinted upon each one of us in a manner completely unique to us. One thing is for sure—the common denominator between us in how love makes us feel, and thus a tangible, visible and materialized version of love is, serenity. Those ‘in love’—be it with life, with friends, with family, with art, with a lifetime partner—are at peace with themselves. It is such a peace that allows them to receive love and give it in return. It is a peace that isn’t preoccupied with the superficial, the materialistic, the mundane measures of ‘happiness’—from being skinny enough to pretty enough to successful enough—and allows one the blessing to live in the now, not the future or the past. So in your quest for love—when its gets painful, stoic, biting hurting, difficult, jealous, angry, hateful and self-destructive—please realize that isn’t a quest that has anything to do with love. Love happens— and if you’ve got your shit together, your eyes will see it when it does happen. The Central Building as Communication Knot The Zaha Hadid Cetral Building for BMW constituted a radical reinterpretation of the traditional office- transforming the building and the functions it contains into a more dynamic, engaging ‘nerve-centre’ or ‘communication know’- funneling all movement around the manufacturing complex through a space that transcends conventional white collar/blue collar spatial divisions.

The Central Building is the nerve-centre of the whole factory complex with all the building’s activities gathering and branching out again from here. The knot connects the three main manufacturing departments of Bodyin-White, Paint Shop and Assembly while serving as the entrance to the plant. The whole expanse of this side of the factory is oriented and animated by a force field emanating from the central building. All movement converging on the site is funnelled through this compression chamber squeezed in between the three main segments of production. Such planning strategy applies not only to the cycles and trajectories of workers and visitors but also the production line, which traverses this central point. This dynamic focal point
of the enterprise is visually evident in the proposed dynamic spatial system that encompasses the whole northern front of the factory and articulates the central building as a point of confluence and the culmination of various converging flows.The central area as a “market place� is intended to enhance communication by providing staff with an area with which to avail themselves of personal and administrative services. This organisation of the building exploits the obvious sequence of front-to-back for the phasing of public to quiet activities. The primary organising strategy is the scissor-section connecting the ground floor and first floor in a continuous field. Two sequences of terraced plates, like giant staircases, step up from north to south and from south to north capturing a long connective void between them. One cascade commences close to the public lobby overlooking the forum to reach the first floor in the

middle of the building. The other starts with offices at the south end moving up to meet the first cascade then moving all the way up to the space projecting over the entrance. At the bottom of this void is the auditing area as a central focus of everybody’s attention. Above the void open to view the half-finished cars are moving along their tracks between the various surrounding production units. The cascading floor plates are large enough to allow for flexible occupation patterns. The advantage here lies in the articulation of recognisable domains within an overall field. With a global field, it opens up to visual communication more possible than with a single flat floor plate. The integration of workers is facilitated by an overall transparency of the internal organisation. The mixing of functions avoid the traditional segregation of status groups. A series of engineering and administrative functions are located within the trajectory of the manual workforce’s daily movements. White collar functions are located both on ground and first floor. Equally Blue Collar social spaces are located on both floors thus preventing the establishment of exclusive domain. The intrinsic problems of a large car-park in front of a building were avoided by turning it into a dynamic spectacle in its own right. The inherent dynamism of vehicle movement and the ‘lively’ field of car bodies is revealed in the arrangement of parking lots which let the whole field move, colour and sparkle with swooping trajectories culminating within the building. Here cars swoop underneath, setting down visitors into the glazed public lobby allowing views deep into the building. 104

London Aquatics Centre Architects: Zaha Hadid Location: London
Design Concept The architectural concept of the London Aquatics Centre is inspired by the fluid geometry of water in motion, creating spaces and a surrounding environment in sympathy with the river landscape of the Olympic Park. An undulating roof sweeps up from the ground as a wave – enclosing the pools of the Centre with its unifying gesture of fluidity, whilst also describing the volume of the swimming and diving pools. The London Aquatics Centre is designed to have the flexibility to accommodate the size and capacity of the London 2012 Olympic Games whilst also providing the optimum size and capacity for use in Legacy mode after the 2012 Games.
Site Context The London Aquatics Centre is located at the southeastern edge of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on the new Stratford City Bridge giving pedestrian access to the park from the new Stratford City development and public transportation.

Layout The Aquatics Centre is planned on an orthogonal axis perpendicular to the Stratford City Bridge. Along this axis are laid out the three pools. The training pool is located under the bridge whilst the competition and diving pools are within a large volumetric pool hall. The overall strategy is to frame the base of the pool hall as a podium by surrounding it and connecting it into the bridge. This podium element allows for the containment of a variety of differentiated and cellular programmatic elements into a single architectural volume, which is seen to be completely assimilated with the bridge and the landscape. The podium emerges from the bridge to cascade around the pool hall to the lower level of
the canal. The pool hall is expressed above the podium level by a large roof, which arches along the same axis as the pools. Its form is generated by the sightlines for the spectators during the Olympic mode.
This structural arrangement ensured 7,500 temporary spectator seats could be installed along either side of the pools in Olympic mode (total 15,000 temporary seats) with no structural obstructions.
Double-curvature geometry has been used to create a structure of parabolic arches that define its form. The roof undulates to differentiate the volumes of the competition and diving pools, and extends beyond the pool hall envelope to cover the external areas of the podium and entrance on the bridge.
After the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, this temporary seating has been removed and replaced with glazing panels, leaving a capacity of 2,500 seats for community use and future national/international events, with a significantly reduced pool hall volume.
The roof structure is grounded at three points of the centre (two points at the northwest end on the bridge; and one single point to the south east end).

With a contemporary new look, a revised interior and more powerful and fuel-efficient engines, the redesigned 2014 Cadillac CTS looks like a serious contender in the midsize luxury sedan class. For its new CTS, Cadillac has revised just about everything, and the results are encouraging. The new sedan sits atop a 1.2-inch-longer wheelbase, and it’s 4.2 inches longer overall and 0.8 inch lower. Thanks to this upsizing, the 2014 CTS is now a true midsize sedan Styling is largely an evolution of the outgoing model; the restyled grille is simultaneously more slender and more aggressive, and the Caddy’s new LED running lights are striking. Where the previous CTS sedan’s styling looked forced and overly angular, the 2014 Cadillac CTS has a more flowing and elegant design.
