Happy Now !Year

Happy Now Year! Ringing in a new year with celebration is pretty much just as insane as ringing in a new Saturday afternoon. Think about it-- do you wake up with a new life in Maui on January 1st? Do you instantly find yourself transformed from a wishy-washy character at 11:59 on December 31st to a bold and strong personality the second after the stroke of midnight? There’s nothing ‘new’ about the new year-- for the truly avant garde, the game changers, the soul searchers, the life leaders and the risk takers, every second of every minute in every hour that makes up every day, is new. It is the flair of such people that sparks newness to everything in their lives-- be it from the act of waking up to the task of commuting to work. Their eyes, ears, minds and souls are open windows in ‘the now’, allowing fresh thoughts, ideas and experience inside, airing out all things old. These are the ones who don’t waste time making resolutions, they proceed directly to making headlines. Promising themselves to make this year different is 100,000 steps behind the leaps they’ve taken forward in making the now different . These are the ones who have demonstrated that anyone can be these ones. It isn’t something you are born with, it is something you bear from within-- an attitude, an outlook and a determination conceived through passion and perseverance. Most of the time, finding that passion is a process of elimination-- finding what you truly love after having tried many things you either hated or were indifferent about. And most of the time, the things you hated or were indifferent about armed you with skills, experience and character-building tools so you can now pursue what you love all the better. So in essence, everything you do now is building towards another now you have determined. The point is, time doesn’t make life new-- it just procrastinates the new from being in the now. ‘New’ isn’t even a measure of time-- it’s a state of mind, a way of life. Now is new if you choose to see and do the same every day things with a different perspective. So, while everyone else is excitedly extending their wishes for a Happy New Year, to all those with flair and all those aspiring towards it, Happy Now Year, Month, Week, Day, Hour, Minute and Second. -Flair Team

Claudia Schiffer’s Sunglasses Line Will Bring Supermodel Flare to Your Wardrobe

She’s already dominated cashmere so now Claudia Schiffer is embarking on a new project; eyewear. The German supermodel has joined forces with her home country’s leading manufacturer of lenses and optical frames, Rodenstock, to design a 15-piece collection of eyewear. The Claudia Schiffer by Rodenstock will be unveiled at the Opti trade show, which takes place in Munich January 10-12 and it will feature eight optical styles and seven sunglass styles, all inspired by the Seventies, the model’s favourite decade. “Sunglasses are an essential part of my wardrobe. After years of wearing so many styles, I wanted to create a collection of great frames where the quality of the lens is equally as important as the style.” Previously, Claudia Schiffer said no to having an Hermes bag named after her But she launched Claudia Schiffer Cashmere in 2011 in conjunction with the luxury German cashmere brand, Iris von Arnim.

Will Nicolas Ghesquière be the New Marc Jacobs?

Louis Vuitton owner LVMH has confirmed the departure of the American designer, who will be leaving the French fashion label to focus on his own brand. LVMH chairman & CEO Bernard Arnault & Marc Jacobs have announced the designer’s departure from Louis Vuitton on the final morning of Paris Fashion Week. Jacobs’s contract is set to run out in 2014, & the 50-year-old designer, who has been with the brand since 1997, will not be renewing it. It is thought that he will focus, along with business partner Robert Duffy, on an IPO for his own multi-million dollar Marc Jacobs brand, which should occur within the next three years. Nicolas Ghesquière has been touted as the US designer’s replacement. The former Balenciaga creative director left that label after 15 years in 2011, later replaced by Alexander Wang.

Eva Mendes Makes the Casual Look Sexy.

Seductively gorgeous, dating Ryan Gosling & now launching her own clothing line. With all eyes on the Spring/Summer collections in Paris, the actress modeled some of Autumn/Winter’s prettiest pieces & quietly confirmed the launch of her new clothing line in the process. Eva by Eva Mendes, the clothes & accessories are “directly inspired” by her own wardrobe & retro, feminine style, & have just launched at US store New York & Company. Eva insists she’s not just your average celebrity putting her name to a clothing line: “I take this very seriously. There isn’t a piece in my collection that I won’t wear. I can’t wait to get feedback from women about what works for them & what doesn’t. I hope I don’t disappoint them.” The collection of pretty, feminine pieces, available in a range of prices from $55 to $80 & are designed to make real women feel good. Now if a Lebanese high street retailer could pick up the collection so we can get our hands on few pieces, we’d be ever-so grateful.

Ford’s Warriors in Pink® “Models of Courage”

“Don’t be afraid; checkups save lives, including mine.” That’s the advice from Debbie Armaly, a three-year breast cancer survivor, who recently took part in a special photo-shoot organised by Ford Motor Company and its Warriors in Pink® campaign to launch Models of Courage in the Middle East. Following on from its huge success in the US, Ford Middle East selected five inspirational women to take part in the campaign to highlight the stories of local breast cancer survivors and promote the importance of early detection in the battle against the disease. Statistically, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, 85 per cent of whom have no family history of the disease. With figures as high as these, it indicates the importance of early detection and local awareness programs.

Smart & Smarter for theDumb & Dumber Let’s just start with a disclaimer-- even the most intelligent of us feel like Rainman in the face of technology, especially given the speed with which it evolves & its shorthand acronyms which necessitate Webster publish a dictionary of all words digital.Whereas ‘G’ was a spot that 95% of women could confirm no man was able to find, now it’s a technology prefixed with a number; ten years ago, ‘android’ was most likely an apt adjective of a gay woman who didn’t realize she was gay yet; & fifteen years ago, google would have sounded like something you call a guy who needs an anatomical instruction manual while navigating his way through female plumbing. The bottom line is, as technology gets smarter, we feel dumber.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 The Galaxy Note 3 is a feature-packed smartphone with an even larger display, faster processor and more capabilities than before making daily routines amazingly easy and joyful. The Note 3 has a premium design, with a skin cover that feels like leather. The new S pen makes your life easier and with an enlarged screen, and you can handle the multiple tasks on your phone more flexibly. Galaxy Note 3 main specs include a 1.9 Quad Core and 1.3 Quad Core processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB Internal MEMory, 13 MP rear camera, and a 2MP front camera. Basically, when it’s raining MEM, you have a lot of space to store applications that you know you’ll never use. And because it’s raining RAM, you have an easier time never using several of those applications simultaneously. You also get the best viewing experience through a large full high definition or FHD screen. Full is better than empty, so let’s just accept that as being something better to have.”Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) technology prevents blurring, while allowing for clearer, brighter and sharper images. Other flagship features include the G2 camera, with Super Resolution and Multi-Point Auto Focus. The first Smartphone on the market to feature 24 bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback technology-which in a nutshell rocks, because than means studio-like quality sound, on the operational front, the G2 runs on the industry’s most advanced processor, the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800, making for optimal speed and efficiency.

LG G2 Mobile

iPhone 5

5.2-inch Full HD screen, the G2 also stands out by boasting the largest display designed within the Smartphone market.

The iPhone 5 is an evolution rather than a revolution in design, with a larger screen size and super fast 4G connectivity. The sarcastically best part is, if you own any other iThings, you can no longer interchange cables because Apple has gone out of its way to change the iPhone 5’s cable port-- a literal plastic surgery found to be as useless as Sabah’s facelift and just as annoying too.

LG is also proud that its “Dual Routing technology reduces the phone’s bezel to a mere 2.65mm on the side edge.” Basically that means that LG has figured out a way to shrink down the frame at the top and bottom of the display’s cover, otherwise known as the bezel. It calls this ‘dual routing’. And, with proven IPS technology, the LG G2 offers superior graphics, accurate colors and clear images, which all in turn offer a unique viewer experience. InPlane Switching, or IPS is almost like PMS in the sense it gives a lot of punch. The main difference is with IPS, the punch brings vividness to your display, whereas with PMS, the punch brings vivid pain from your wife. Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) technology prevents blurring, while allowing for clearer, brighter and sharper images. Other flagship features include the G2 camera, with Super Resolution and Multi-Point Auto Focus. The first Smartphone on the market to feature 24 bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback technology-- which in a nutshell rocks, because than means studio-like quality sound, on the operational front, the G2 runs on the industry’s most advanced processor, the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800, making for optimal speed and efficiency.

Getting back to the phone itself, the cameras are different and not different. The rear camera retains the same core specs as the iPhone 4S but it’s 30% thinner, making for a slimmer device. As for the front facing camera, it now sits above the earpiece rather than off to the side, and can shoot 720p video, up from iPhone 4S’s 480p. One would hope a bigger ‘p’ always bodes well. The iPhone 5’s design looks like a triumph, though with long term use it has been shown to have a number of drawbacks such as the scratching and the headphone position. When all is texted and done, the phone you choose really falls back on the life you live on that phone. But no matter how smart the phone really is, remember one thing: it’s only your smarts that will get the girl’s number.

Richard BRANSON Founder of the Virgin Group Horoscope: Cancer Chinese Zodiac: Tiger

34

I

If you had to give it all up, but keep one thing, what would it be?

My family! I love spending time with my beautiful wife, my two children, their partners and their friends. Christmas and holidays are always great as the entire family get together and share the festivities; nothing beats spending time with the people I love. Ray Kroc once asked a class of MBA students at the University of Texas, ‘what business do you think I am in?’ They answered, ‘hamburgers.’ He replied, ‘that is what I thought you would say. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m not in the hamburger business. My business is real estate.’ Given the various companies you’ve started, the investment ideas you’ve had, the ones that flew off the ground, the ones that didn’t really take off, what business would you actually say you are in? I think Virgin is in the business of smart disruption and changing the game for good. We aspire to provide an innovative, quality service to our customers in whatever area we go into and try to shake up that area for the better, and for good. What is the one commodity as a human characteristic that there’s an oversupply of and what is the one commodity as a characteristic that is scarce, rare and therefore of great value? I would say that there is an oversupply of people willing to go along with the status quo and not enough people willing to risk taking on the large monopolies. You’re on an island. You meet the natives,

to whom money, companies or business means nothing; in fact, the idea of economy is totally ridiculous. Their livelihood, their existence, their wellbeing depends on feeding the mind as well as the soul. You can speak their language, and when they ask you, how can you contribute to society, what are some of the things you could do just as impactfully as you’ve done with your businesses? I suppose it would be my leadership qualities. I am very good at listening to others and trusting in them, believing in them and respecting them. At Virgin we try to encourage people to think for themselves and not behave like machines, giving them more responsibility than they might expect, and helping them develop their skills.

Many go into negotiations with thinking ‘what they can get’, rather than what they can give. What’s the most important or biggest thing you can give in negotiating? Honesty and the ability to listen for what they are really looking for out of the deal. If Richard today could go back to Richard at 16, what’s the one thing you’d tell him to keep in mind? If Richard at 80 could come to you today, what’s the one thing he’d tell you to keep in mind? My advice would be to both - never be afraid of taking risks, remember it is alright to have fun whilst working hard and never let go of your dreams.

Lao Tzu said, ‘Music in the soul can be heard by the universe’. What music are you playing? Why do people enjoy listening to it?

To learn, one must first unlearn.’ Is there anything you have unlearned? If so, what have you relearned from it?

I never say NEVER – I’m known as Dr Yes by my staff remember!!!! Although I could kick myself that we weren’t the company who invented the iPod! I’m a risk taker who is not afraid to take on the big boys, and I like to think does it in a fun way that is refreshing and enjoyable for all!

Well, I left school at 15 so I did not learn enough from somebody else to then unlearn it later on because of my own experience! Instead, I decided early on to be a student of life and learnt making mistakes is ok, never to be afraid of taking risks and find on area you excel in and focus on it.

Khalil Jibran said, ‘Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother.’ What is it that you have faith in? Has doubt served to lead you there?

The doctor tells you that in order to survive, you can only either keep your soul, your mind or your heart. Which one do you keep and why?

I have faith in people and, in particular, the individuals that make up the Virgin Group. I wouldn’t say that doubt led me there, but, at a very early age I realized that I couldn’t do everything myself. I had to learn the art of delegation and try to find people who are better than me to run the companies – that wasn’t that difficult!

These questions are like an interview with Confucius! Well, as I said earlier, the one thing I would keep if I had to lose everything else was my family, so I would keep my heart in order to still have their love and love them back.

G

iven the companies you’ve started & the breadth of your business spanning from jewelry to media to IT, if you had to sum it up in one word, what business would you say you’re in?

Robert, took Mouawad to Europe, Asia & North America. Where does Fred want to take it? As a Co-Guardian with my brothers, we would like to continue building Mouawad into a globally recognized brand by expanding our boutique footprint.

have so much more to do to continue growing what I have started, & also many more opportunities to start new ventures.

The one word would be “people.” I am in the business of organizing & developing people to win at the game we choose to play.

If David Mouawad rang you, after learning of how far you’ve taken Mouawad today, what would he say?

When it comes to working hard towards success & achievement, is the key ingredient talent, ambition or passion?

I think he would say, “Fred you’re on the right track but you still have a lot more to do to reach your global vision. Stay focused on enchanting customers, & pursue your goal relentlessly while adapting to market conditions.”

The ability to develop great leaders at the touch of a magic wand. Building leaders with flair, courage, wisdom, & experience takes, commitment, time, & some luck. With more leaders I would be able to achieve even more.

Many ingredients are necessary but the most critical is passion. You may have talent & ambition, but if you don’t channel your energy in areas that are intellectually stimulating & provide you with natural energy, you’re not likely to give it your best & be competitive. On the Mouawad website Jean de la Fountaine’s quote, ‘sometimes a man meets his destiny on the road chosen to avoid it.’ On your road getting here, is there anything you’ve avoided to arrive to where you are today?

What advice would he give you in even growing it further in the future? He would say: “Our most important asset is our reputation & the relationship we have with our customers. Your brothers & you have so far worked following great ethical standards, & your job is to make sure you maintain this culture throughout the entire organization & instill it in the future generation of Guardians.”

I have listened to my internal compass & avoided spending too much in situations I did not feel I was thriving in. Life is short, & there is nothing worse than waking up in the morning & not being energized by what is coming ahead.

Having accomplished so much & given your success, you’ve seen & done items 1 through 50 on most people’s Bucket Lists. What is at the top of your own Bucket List that still remains un-ticked? Why haven’t you done it yet?

If you had one superpower, what would it be…? Why?

Jackson Pollack was once asked how he could paint on the floor & yet control his brush to accidental strokes. His answer was, ‘I deny the accident.’ What is the one thing you deny in order to achieve success? The sacrifices, pain, & commitment it takes to succeed. The price is heavy. I very often intentionally shift my emotions into a positive mode when facing adversity. If I don’t look at the bright side of every challenge, the road would be too painful. When you’re 70, & you look back on your life, what is the single most important personal accomplishment you hope to achieve? Having helped many people around me succeed & assisting my children reach their full potential. How do you define a woman with Flair? A woman that is comfortable with herself & with her choices, & who has the courage to pursue her beliefs.

I

If ‘Simon Says’ is a challenge based on issuing instructions, what would ‘Simone Says’ be based on?

Issuing rigid instructions only leads to banal results & never to creative work so it isn’t something I would encourage. “Simone Says” would be based on empowerment, in today’s world we need purpose & direction not discipline & orders. If something feels right & you are empowered to do it, then nothing should hold you back, & if you feel comfortable doing a certain thing, then you will excel. Why Luxury? Because luxury is timeless. Trends come & go but sophistication, class & extravagance are bought to stay to become part of a personal heritage. Allow me to add, that luxury isn’t just owning “pretty, shining things” it’s about quality, performance and, above all, a reflection of a personal attitude, & personal status. When it comes to working hard towards success & achievement, is the key ingredient talent, determination or passion? The most important ingredient would be passion. This mantra has been repeated a million times because it’s true: if you truly want to be successful, you must be passionate about it. No one wants a job or task to accomplish they need passion to feel a sense of achievement & success. We want purpose in our lives those will satisfy our souls & give us fulfillment. When you find that one thing that truly thrills you, then that extra mile towards excellence becomes natural. Being the ‘title’ of tamer frères, how did the ‘soeur’ manage to run a division of the business? Frères for me is a symbol of fraternity; it is coming together & supporting each other. My brother, sisters & I work alongside each other we complement each other’s efforts. That is the essence of the sustainability & success of our family business. That solidarity among us empowers each one of us to be the best they are, luckily we have a great father to learn from & act as our guide. Your great grand father started the business in 1895 & your father took it to Europe, the Middle-East & Africa. Where are you planning to take it? 38

The quantum growth in the Middle East & Africa is creating an ever bigger market with a superb potential for decades to come. We firmly believe that there are still many opportunities to explore & businesses to evolve in this every growing market. & acting on our beliefs, I’ve developed the business in Iraq, a country we used to be active in during the 80s & 90s, we’ve opened up new boutiques & introduced new brands in the market. It’s not just about geographical expansion; it’s about adapting, integrating, & identifying the opportunities in the future markets where we operate. If Gerges Tamer rang you, after learning of how far you’ve taken the business today, what would he say? I know he would be proud of my family & our achievements. The company has grown exponentially since it first started & that is of course something every business owner dreams of. & for the success to be carried on for generations, I’m sure he will be proud of what we’ve done but if I could speak to him on the phone, I would be the one praising & thanking him for the valuable values that have been at the core of the business’s success. Each generation coming into the business, has a big weight to carry & I feel that responsibility in every day of work.

of us in Lebanon & the Middle East to achieve equal opportunities for women in the boardrooms & executive suites. If you had one super power, what would it be? I want to be able to read minds! Understanding people; where their opinions & values come from & why they feel in a certain way. The diversity of people, cultures & experiences makes people’s minds the greatest element that shapes our lives. Quote of life? “You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.” – Albert Camus. Some of the luxury items that we sell define their markets not because of the uniqueness of the parts but because of the wholeness of the experience that they offer. The passion built into them produces a value that is by far greater than the sum of its parts. Analyzing the world in its small parts alone will not get us as far as seeing the bigger picture & the value of synergy when all the beautiful elements come together.

You want to go down in society for…?

What is flair & what qualifies a woman to have it?

For helping woman create their own paths. I want to help women recognize their own potential & power; to help them understand that achieving their dreams isn’t farfetched; to inspire them to reach their own soul-satisfying goals. We still have a long road ahead

Flair is when someone turns & looks, then stops, pauses, & turns again. To the people dwelling on the surface that is about looks, but to those who appreciate the complexity of life they will turn again for attitude & confidence.

Paolo BONGIA Founder of Paolobongia Chinese Zodiac: Horse Horoscope: Virgo

T

here are many Paolos but I’m THE Paolo because…? I achieve what I think.

Why jewelry? Jewelry has always been part of my life. I can express myself easily in my designs. When it comes to working hard towards success and achievement, is the key ingredient talent, ambition or passion? If I had to choose just one, I would say talent. Ambition and passion drive you to persist in whatever you do—but talent determines how well you get it done. What qualified Beverly Hills to have Paolobongia at Rodeo Drive? I would put the question the other way around. Rodeo Drive is one of the most fashionable streets in the world. In order to take the brand Paolobongia to a higher level, I had to be among the other big ones. My style is very different and I saw that there was a need for a fashionable jewelry brand to be there. Between Janet Jackson, 50 Cent, Diana Haiden, Valeria Mazza, Minnie Driver, Naomi Campbell and other red carpet icons, which celebrity wore Paolobongia best? Each one of them wears it differently. I really can not tell who wears it better. You started Paolobongia in Italy. You then brought it to Beirut and now Beverly Hills. Where so you want to take it next? I will take it wherever it should go. I am mainly investing in the US for the time being and the next stop is Las Vegas for 2014-2015. If your grandmother rang you, after learning of how far you’ve taken Paolobongia today, what would she say? I guess she will ask me to calm down and enjoy my family home. You want to go down in history for…? Whatever history wants, it’s not me who should decide. If you had one super power, what would it be? Convince my children not to make the same mistakes I did. What is flair and what qualifies a woman to have it? Flair is a modern magazine and every woman who has self-confidence in herself, should have it. 40

Cartier

It Might Just Cause a Rush

IF THIS COLLECTION WAS A CONTINENT... It would be a territory at the boundary between dreams & reality, a heartland that inspires creation... Cartier travels, etching the contours of a land steeped in familiarity & fantasy, defined by its power & vitality, the sensuality of its colours & materials: Africa. An encounter that is beautiful, generous & fitting; one of those rare, dazzlingly open encounters that surprise & transform you forever. Cartier embraces the African palette to render its beauty, transfigured in a halo of sublime refinement. IF THIS COLLECTION WAS A CITY... It would be a modern city buzzing with light, inhabited by a cosmopolitan crowd, happy & passionate... The city: unreal & cross-cultured, universal, governed by speed, tempo, momentum... a hub of modernity, a landmark in the Cartier repertory whose lines are merrily explored, its contours traced by Cartier in jewellery sets crafted in clean, sharp designs... IF THIS COLLECTION WAS A JOURNEY... It would be a journey beyond time, an inspired route winding its way to Africa via India, China & the Orient... Change is abreast in these landscapes that Cartier knows & loves: the lines move, colour explodes, motion comes into play... Cartier - & the world is new...! Cartier, the passionate jeweller of contemporary beauty! A collection like an odyssey of creation... Africa, land of jewels… africa, lands bathed in heat & sun... Africa, a faraway territory whose beauty becomes a jewel... The cradle of all stones, the hearth of a primal energy beating at its core... The majesty of African evocations, sensual & sensorial, an essence which Cartier echoes in stones glowing with warmth & life - rutilated quartz, obsidian, golden topaz - with solar, earthy colours, with the beauty of traditional motifs, the power of animal inspirations... a world of creation whose force is imperceptibly adorned with Cartier’s savoir-faire. The collection L’Odyssée de Cartier - Parcours d’un style harbours this touch of primal nature magnified by Cartier in a host of new forms, expertly transcribed into stone; an aesthetic is born, open & passionate. A solar jewellery set, where earth meets diamond. Hues of ochre sunset & sands. Three rows of pearls linked by a rutilated quartz cabochon in the centre of the necklace, surmounted by an orange tourmaline. Concentric circles ripple & flow. An infinite reflection, endlessly repeated. The sun of Africa, omnipresent its golden glow casting majesty on everything. Cartier captures the intense essence of Africa to design jewellery composed of shadow & light: a torrent of obsidian half-crescents cascading down to a rutilated quartz cabochon. Stones rich with life & colour, sometimes animated by inclusions.

Jewellery that evokes art brut, primary & naïve, set in perspective by a recurring geometric motif on each piece: a circle curled onto itself. This same form defines the bracelet & the ring: the central stone is set away from the metal, offered to the gaze between cupolas paved with diamonds on the sides & rimmed with dark obsidian on the ridges. This apparently simple necklace masks an intricate complexity. It is composed of pearls & paved elements & involves numerous constraints to find the ideal balance between form & hold, suppleness & a light feel. The result is aesthetically perfect, hanging with flawless grace. The rutilated quartz cabochon that is the highlight of the necklace seems to hang in levitation inside a ring of grey gold. No claws or anchor elements are visible. Only the excellence of a jewellery design that keeps elegantly in the background to display the balance, beauty & radiance of materials & forms. A powerful bracelet that magnifies the zebra motif to evoke the feel & sensuality of real zebra skin. A traditional African form, an intrinsically animal motif, Cartier to the core, enhanced by exquisitely detailed craftsmanship: an ultra-complicated paving of irregular onyx strips in a mesh of brilliant-cut diamonds, adjusted one by one like a puzzle of jewels. The paving is “furstudded”, the onyxes are buffed, the edge is marked with a vivid ridge of garnets, all evoking the sensation of a caress. A simple geometric form for a motif free of all symmetry; the volume is original, carnal & symbolic The essential shape & design says Africa. Sublime. This buoyant bracelet with powerful volume & the sleekest graphic design plays on solids & voids. Finding the right balance to allow the hollowed, precious metal structure to stay light while holding the diamond paving & onyx pieces was the first challenge to which the jeweller rose. Each black mark is unique in form & composed of small onyx elements, individually cut & assembled together on the mount. Large & small diamonds are paved onto the openwork mount, a veritable lacework of grey gold. Each onyx motif requires the same gesture & the same challenge arises, difficulty reappears from a new angle: the onyx must be perfectly cut to ensure the piece looks harmonious & whole. From this complexity & this jewellery prowess, Cartier offers & shares sheer beauty. The city, extending the domain of cartier’s jewellery expression... The city, a fabulous realm of linear expression which cartier sets into motion... The city, the setting for cultural blends, connections & unions... In phase with the world around it, cartier captures these new codes that inspire its creative vocabulary. The City exists as a special land of its own for Cartier:

46

beyond borders & geography, it is a transverse continent, universal & contemporary, fired by the moment... The mercurial, quicksilver energy that flows in its veins is constant, seductive. The tempo that drives it never stops, beating like a heart... Cartier, master jeweller of all that is exceptional, creates a High Jewellery collection that reflects the mood of the moment, beauty at thrilling speeds... A line of buildings on the horizon, architectural details, the lights of perpetual city traffic... Evocations abound, but speed & movement are the motifs of this jewellery set, two new essential notions in Cartier’s aesthetic vocabulary. Perspective plays on depth to spark a dynamic. Asymmetry, forward & reverse angles, the precision of expert savoir-faire that stays in the shadows to put the magic in motion: the motif turns mobile, light years from the initial static drawing! The orient geometric motifs, star-shaped designs, precious mashrabiyas, plays on openwork & materials, contrasts between blue & green: cartier’s oriental palette keeps on growing... With the collection L’Odyssée de Cartier - Parcours d’un style, Cartier extends the frontiers even further, movement ripples through the creations, water meanders its way across grid designs, colours are bold, rigorous construction of forms invites eternal contemplation... INDIA Ruby balls, engraved emeralds, brightly coloured stones: this is India, an inspiration cartier cherishes today bursting with modernity... Revealed through a kaleidoscope of forms & colours, a joyful apparition in a multitude of prisms: India, as Cartier sees it... the Tutti Frutti style invents itself as buoyant, luscious jewellery; the intensity of fuchsia tempered with diamonds; snakes slide onto the wrist with charming undulations; jewellery pieces blooming with volume, ethereal & physical, connect the earth to the sky. A contemporary allusion to the splendour of ceremonial jewellery of old, Cartier designs spectacular necklaces with exquisite sophistication, studded with radiant diamonds… CHINA Materials, motifs, ideograms, animals & divinities all inherited from China: cartier’s treasure chest is enriched by its Chinese splendours... Stir things up with stones rich with zestful opulence, see the goldenwinged phoenix take flight, bask in the benevolence of a mischievous dragon, soften at the sight of a baby panda or observe two dragons head-to-head, revelling in time everlasting... A timeless experience between land & sky, L’Odyssée de Cartier - Parcours d’un style beckons you into the infinity of China...

Kipling

with Helena Christensen

As she brings her unique, authentic style to Kipling with an exciting new collection for Fall 2013 96

What was your favorite part about working with Kipling? I have always travelled with Kipling suitcases so it was cool to be able to collaborate on designing a line of Kipling bags. It felt like it was my own personal bag line I was working on. What does the collection consist of? A selection of weekend bags, shoulder bags and pouches. One series has lace imprint and is the more elegant version, another has a blown-up photograph I took printed on the outside and the last series is made of leather and inspired by old office and school bags. What is the inspiration for the collection? I just wanted a bag for any occasion, and was inspired by dusty colors for the photographic print bag. The leather series was inspired by those old square schoolbags that get all worn out and look more and more beautiful with time. The lace series was inspired by my old vintage lace dresses. I wanted to transfer that look onto a modern and versatile bag.

What do you look for in a bag? Space! but nothing that looks too oversized, I like a bag that fits under your arm and still has enough space for even a weekend away. For evening wear,I like a pouch that sits comfortably in your hand and fits just the most necessary for an evening out. What’s your favorite bag? I like the little leather pouch. It looks chic and simple. I think with time it will get a nice worn feel and look that will make it even cooler. What is your earliest Kipling memory? Since my early 20s, I’ve been pulling Kipling suitcases along on all my trips all over the world. I have accumulated quite a few of them by now. I can’t wait to see one of the weekend bags I designed going around on a luggage carrousel. I’ll probably let it circle a few rounds…

THE LOOK ON YOUR SKIN

98

“The only thing that brings more of a glow to your skin than great sex, is a great outlook

The Look on Your Skin

Diet is the New Cosmetic!

According to MAGDELENA ROUMI...

Turning back the clock to younger looking skin. Many companies are touting the power of vitamins in the battle against aging but should you look in your medicine cabinet or kitchen cabinet to find the fountain of youth? To make it easy for you, just Make sure you’re putting foods for healthy skin on your plate. Everything you eat becomes a part of not only your inner being, but the outer fabric of your body as well. The healthier the foods are that you consume, the better your skin will look. Eating a balanced diet is the best way to get your share of good food for healthy skin. Still, a number of specific skin treats are more likely than others to give a boost of glowing good health to your complexion.

Water

skin acts as a water reservoir & participates in fluid regulation for the whole body.By drinking water, you moisture your skin from within or the inside out. As our skin is composed of approximately 20% water, it will wrinkle faster without adequate moisture. Just like the plant, when skin loses moisture, it gets dry. Dry skin shows wrinkles more & causes skin to sag faster than it would normally. Skin that is becoming saggy, either due to aging or weight loss, will plump up nicely when the skin cells are hydrated. The effects of dehydration on the skin are more noticeable on the face, than on the lower limbs.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is one of nature’s finest plants in healing many ailments especially wound & burn healing. However this miraculous plant is not limited to this. As a skin brightener,Rub aloe vera on your face to decrease pigmentation & dark spots. Aloe is a surprisingly good moisturizer & is effective in combating wrinkles because the skin absorbs it quickly - rub some on your neck & see for yourself. Aloe Vera also works as a natural hair conditioner that sooths dry damaged hair & stimulates the scalp creating new hair growth. What makes this plant so effective is that it contains the same proteins & enzymes found in the human body. In fact a further study showed that the plant’s vitamins & minerals has the closet match to our human biochemistry hence why its commonly used in treating many illnesses & injuries as it is able to replaces certain proteins that have been stripped from the human body. 100

Carrots

Carrots,a natural source of vitamin A, & its derivatives are extremely important in dermatology. In over-thecounter cosmetics one will often see the word retinal or retinoid, which refers to the entire group of naturally occurring & even artificially manufactured vitamin A-type compounds. They help treat diseases & they provide cosmetic benefits. Retin-A is a derivative of vitamin A that has been used to treat acne for decades & has become popular as an agent that is proven to reduce fine lines & wrinkles. Isotretinoin, known as Accutane (or Ro-accutane or Cureacne in Lebanon), is a vitamin A formulation taken by mouth that has proven extremely helpful in treating cystic acne. Vitamin A works on the skin cell itself in many ways. It may cause a whole range of effects, many of which are beneficial. Specifically, vitamin A derivatives are thought to control cells that might otherwise turn cancerous. Vitamin A compounds are very helpful in treating conditions such as psoriasis, where the skin proliferates very rapidly & thick scaly patches of skin can accumulate. Overall, vitamin A products have been extremely helpful in managing skin diseases & are even more promising in terms of solutions to cosmetic needs of patients.

Green tea

Recent research suggests that green tea may help keep your skin free of pimples. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), one of the major catechins in green tea, has been shown to influence the production & actions of hormones that have been linked to acne breakouts. Green tea is also thought to have detoxifying & antiinflammatory properties, which may further help keep acne at bay.

Salmon

Salmon is a beauty food par excellence. Not only does it help keep the skin soft & smooth, but it can also help you grow strong nails. In addition to containing a substantial amount of protein, salmon is loaded with vitamin B12, with a 260-calorie serving packing more than 50% of the reference daily intake for this important vitamin. A deficiency of vitamin B12 can lead to excessive nail dryness, overly curved nail ends, & darkened nails.

Prunes

Packed with both copper & zinc, prunes are undoubtedly one of the best foods for hair loss prevention. Although our bodies require only a small amount of copper, this trace mineral is necessary for the proper functioning of the body, including healthy hair growth. Adequate levels of copper help slow down hair loss & contribute to hair thickness. Copper is also thought to intensify hair color & prevent premature graying of hair. Zinc, on the other hand, plays an important role in skin rejuvenation (the production of new cells (including hair cells)) & the maintenance of the oil-secreting glands that make hair shiny.

Avocados

Swisher (1988) discusses use of the avocado as a skin moisturizer, cleansing cream, makeup base, sunscreen, lipstick, bath oil, & hair conditioner. Toxicological tests of avocado oil products have provided an official health/safety assessment. In skin care, the two major advantages of the avocado are its marked softening & soothing nature & its notable absorption. Compared with almond, corn, olive, & soybean oils, avocado oil had the highest skin penetration rate (Swisher, 1988). In sunscreens, chemicals like PABA have superior effectiveness but cause skin irritation in some people. Because they are synthetic, there are lingering questions about long-term safety. Among eight plant oils, avocado oil proved the most effective sunscreen.

Almonds

Vitamin E found in almonds is an important antioxidant that helps protect cells from everyday damage. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, hair, nails & skin & helps repair tissues in the body.

Flavonoids

Both carotenoids & flavonoids help protect skin against UV damage & can improve skin hydration & condition. For well hydrated skin, hair & nails, drink plenty of water. The fluids & flavonoids aid blood circulation & the delivery of nutrients, so give yourself a daily flavonoid dose with a few cups of black, green or white tea and, depending on your mood, a glass of red wine, a cup of hot cocoa or a few squares of dark chocolate.

Beta-Carotene & Vitamin A

If you have dry hair & skin, take a look at how much colored fruit & vegetables & other vitamin A-rich foods you’re eating. Beta carotene is an important antioxidant which is vital for skin health. Antioxidants track down & destroy free radicals in the body harmful chemicals you pick up from the atmosphere & are produced naturally in the body that can cause damage to your cells. Large doses of beta-carotene improve its resilience & to a certain degree helps protect skin from sunburn, especially when eaten with other carotenoids like lycopene (found in tomatoes & watermelon). So perhaps the way to get vitamin A is carrot & watermelon juice.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential to make collagen, a protein that is the main connective tissue in skin. As skin ages it loses collagen. Less collagen means more sagging. Vitamin C is also an essential antioxidant that fights damage already done to your skin. You can find the most vitamin C in citrus fruits, kiwi fruit, blackcurrants & red peppers.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is another antioxidant & is used to help the body heal & prevent scarring - vital for eliminating wrinkles & removing acne scars. It also keeps the red blood cells healthy so more oxygen & nutrients can be carried to the skin’s surface. Vitamin E can be found in sunflower seeds, olive oil & green leafy vegetables like spinach or watercress.

The Essential fats (Omega 3 & Omega 6)

The body needs the essential omega-3 & omega-6 fats. If you have a dry, itchy scalp or skin, you may not be eating enough of these. They are called ‘essential’ fats because the body can’t make them; you have to eat them. Fatty acids help reduce the redness & inflammation associated with eczema & dermatitis, but are also useful for moisturizing your skin. For healthy skin we need a balance of both types of fat. Our Western diet tends to have a higher ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 than ideal. Eating some fish each week, especially oily fish such as salmon, sardines & tuna, increases omega-3s for a better balance. Oily fish provide the long-chain omega-3s, EPA, DHA & DPA. If you can’t eat fish, try flaxseed. Flaxseed (linseed) oil is the richest source of α-linolenic acid (ALA) - another omega-3 fat. Some ALA can be converted to the long-chain omega-3s, but it provides less than fish.

YOUR 14-DAY GUIDE

TO CHRISTMAS FROM PANTENE! The holiday season is here and with it comes a long check list for shopping and looking good! This is your 14-Day guide from Pantene to rock the holidays Day 1

It’s time to get down to business. Before you start shopping for decoration, go over last year’s collection and filter through it to see what you will be using and what you will be letting go. Meanwhile, remember that hair crowns your beauty, so hold on to it, just like you hold on to your most valued items.

Day 2

The cold weather will take its toll on your hair, making it more prone to breakage & falling. Use Pantene’s Anti Hair Fall shampoo and conditioner with every wash, then apply the oil replacement on the tips of your hair. Do the three steps at least twice a week for two weeks and your hair will be healthier and stronger in the face of hair fall which is caused by damage.

Day 3

Consider the color theme for decorating your house. Obviously, it needs to have the traditional red & green, but don’t forget the wintery-white. Talking about winter, don’t forget to protect your hair from the dreaded dry season by applying the leave-in Pantene Oil Replacement on your hair tips.

Day 4

Set a to-gift list, to include all the people you’d like to give gifts to this season. Start with your family members and remember that meaningful gifts are always the most endearing.

Day 5

Try to prep for Christmas while on relax-mode. Don’t get caught up in the details and remember that the holidays always bring out the best in everyone. If you ever feel the need for some metime, indulge in a few more minutes in the shower as you treat your hair to some Hammam Cream from Pantene.

Day 6

Surround yourself with music. Keep a holiday music CD in your car, and another one on standby at home, so you could listen to the season’s favorite hits as you are baking or cooking.

The holidays always bring out the best in everyone.

Day 7

Get to decorating and be open to more than one option. Just like you take your time in front of the mirror, letting your hair down and then back up to get the perfect look, do the same for your own home to get the best possible decoration scheme.

Day 8

Take the Christmas spirit with you wherever you go! Decorate your work space or your car, and feel the joy.

Day 9

Keep some Christmas treats around the house for whenever you get any unexpected visitors. Be careful not to overeat during the holidays, as you’d want to be in full shape for all the wonderful events you’ll be attending.

Day 10

Take a trip to the mountains with the family and enjoy the snow! Make sure to protect your hair from the dry weather up there and keep it moisturized, by using the oil replacement from Pantene.

Day 11

Time for gift shopping! Make sure that there’s a special playroom for your kids wherever you go shopping, so that kids can feel the holiday spirit as you do your shopping without any interruptions.

Day 12

When you light up your tree for the first time, a good idea would be to sit back with a cup of hot chocolate as you take in the beautiful scene.

Day 13

Giving is what Christmas is all about. Pile up some clothes which you don’t use anymore and donate them to a non-profit organization.

Day 14

With Christmas comes a full schedule of events and happenings. Don’t let hair fall come in the way of an otherwise impeccable look. With Pantene’s Anti Hair Fall collection – a shampoo, conditioner and leave-in oil replacement, you will feel like a star this Christmas.

La Vie Est Belle L’Eau de Parfum Legere by Lancôme

Armani launches new perfumes of the Privé collection in November 2010. The collection is named “La Collection des Mille et une Nuits,” inspired by the medieval Arabic tales from 1001 nights. These three new heute couture perfumes depict the exotic mystery of the Orient with its warm, spicy and woody notes on the subject of rose, oud and amber.

106

The new fragrance does not deviate too much from the original; its strong gourmand notes are soothed and refreshed though, adapted for hot days. The new version exudes white musk aura, which is added to the original “edible” aromas of black currant, chocolate praline and vanilla mixed with flowers of jasmine and iris.

After 2011 edition The Golden Secret by Antonio Banderas opens a new chapter of this story—with fragrance Her Golden Secret. The new fragrance arrives as a successor to Her Secret, created as the ultimate fragrance of seduction. Blanchett, who is rehearsing for a play with Isabelle Huppert at the Sydney Theatre Company, will be the face of an advertising campaign for a new eau de parfum called ‘Sí’ that hit the shelves last summer.

The heart of the composition emphasizes accords of red sage, red saffron and lavender, while the “red notes” in the base are described with red wood, hot amber and fragrant coffee beans!

Suggest it, Don’t Sell it...

For those who don’t know the ‘power of suggestion’ theory, it postulates that through giving of subtle cues, certain thoughts, feelings & experiences are stimulated in the receiving person’s unconscious. It propels a reaction that may not be explainable, but for some reason unknown to the ‘suggestee’, is nonetheless compelling. In fact, if you look around, the power of suggestion is a motivating force working upon us everyday—especially when it comes to advertising & marketing. More high-end, luxury goods don’t come with a price tag your face for a very strategic purpose… expensive things entice you with the seemingly desirable—from power, to beauty, to image & prestige—making whatever their price is, worth it. Things of value suggest their worth. Cheap things try to justify theirs. The same applies to romantic commerce—a Chanel woman is a lot less likely to have her double Cs hanging out to lure a man… rather, she opts for a suggestive backless dress or a dangerously demure décolleté. A Fendi femme fatale knows a simple pencil skirt slashed with a slit carries a lot more sexy cache than a short skirt-not-a-skirt-but-a-shirt-skirt. It’s not her assets… it’s her portfolio For those who missed out on biology 101, let us pause for a quick recap—all women have 2 breasts, 1 bum & a pair of legs. How they sit, shake or walk are pretty standard anatomically. The model & year of each really is superfluous when plastic surgery enters the equation. Such default specs do not make for valuable assets. After all, nor are they rare, lacking in supply or provide a unique edge. A woman is like investment portfolio—and before the feminists start ranting about how demeaning an analogy that is—just because you don’t like it, doesn’t make it any less true. Moving past the feminists, portfolios worthy of investing in are those with other more impressively performing assets—and they always perform better with time. In a woman, the most impressively performing asset is assertive self-confidence, which is also the most exceptional of assets. Intelligence, wit & independence, respectively, come as the second most valuated assets. Once a woman has the above in her portfolio, she can build other solid assets, such as easy going (mind you, not easy), sense of humor & an ability to let go & have fun. You can stun, but you can’t belie… And a man knows the value of a woman’s portfolio in under three minutes. You can argue that isn’t true, but just because you argue it, doesn’t make it any less true. Men don’t have to analyze a woman—her portfolio reads as clear to them as a quarterly investment report. Before you can bend over to pick up the pencil you ‘dropped’ on the floor, he’s already graphed, Excelled, charted & plotted out your coordinates on the universal female x/y axis. Ladies, whoever says ‘sex sells’ is willing to buy a good time, not make a long-term investment. If you treat yourself like a soda on ice or a sizzling steak, expect that the only thing faster than the sale, will be how quickly a man consumes you & how much quicker he evacuates himself of you. Dress to suggest—no one is saying to wear a tent—but hey, no need to put the top down either. The power of suggestion may not translate into an immediate sale, but for sure, it will keep the investor preoccupied enough to want to learn more.

Premature Trepidation

Oh ye men who epileptically spasm at the thought of it… lend us your fears! It’s time to face that thing you dread most… that which is the most demoralizing of demoralizing… that which makes your manhood crawl back into its hood…

The phobia of…REJECTION. It really is the boogey monster that never was… realistically, most men aren’t rejected on sight, in as much as on actions and attitude. However, just in case the above has flown over your head, here are a few ‘can’t go wrong’ rules to avoid being ‘rejectionable’. You’re not too sexy for this shirt… Men in skintight shirts—totally legitimate reason to be rejected. There’s a reason WonderBra never came out with the WonderBicep… women won’t go near a man who goes there. Just say ‘no’ to being Rico Suave… For those born after 1990, to truly understand the Rico Suave simile, you must Google him. Being suave in showing how rico you are, is just down right crass. The only girls who may not reject you are the Rico Suavettes—the female counterpart of the ‘rejectables’. Flashy men repel classy women. Fizz over flat… Unless your name is Evian and you’ve sprung from the French alps, stop being a glass of flat water. Where’s your fizz?! Carpe the diem, man! Approach her like you know she wants you. There’s no greater turn off than a man who initiates talking to a woman, but is still afraid to approach her. Enough of the ‘bum and bummer’… When a woman wants a successful man, it doesn’t necessarily mean money— it implies ambition. A man who goes after what he wants and doesn’t give up until he gets it, is the definition of ambition. An ambitious man never disappoints because he does what he says and says what he does. Bums, on the other hand, are bummers because they let a woman down. What women what? Simple, a man who knows what he wants… Ambition cannot be without conviction—you have to know what you want to run after it. Those men are usually leaders, and women always love to follow them. Have a little Salt ‘N’ Pepa... The timeless divas of rap perhaps best sum up the ‘Whatta Man’ man who women can’t reject:

* He’s a real smooth brother, never in a rush * Secure in his manhood cuz he’s a real man * Every time I need him, he always got my back * Never disrespectful cuz his mama taught him that In other words, he’s sensitive in gauging her pace and moves accordingly. He also doesn’t have to control or dominate a woman to feel she’s his. He shows her respect, he’s not threatened by her—and if anything, actually esteems a strong personality. To this man, a woman will give herself without hesitation. Implement these rules, you wonderfully playful little boys, and you will find your trepidation of rejection quickly disappearing. Ultimately, behaving as if you reject rejection, is the surest way to ensure you never end up being rejected. 110

“Life’s passengers are its tourists. Only life’s explorers are its travelers”

Passport Austria The best ski area in Austria is the Arlberg region which includes the very famous resort of St Anton. Just around the corner from this riotous extreme skier’s paradise is the lovely & refined resort of Lech which is on the same lift pass & linked by a 15 minute bus ride. The skiing here is on wide & perfectly groomed pistes & they make any skier look very good indeed. The town is full of traditional styled hotels & range of restaurants is 1st class. This resort is renowned for its snow record & attracting the beautiful people of Austria & Germany. We recommend the Arlberg Hotel which has one of the best well-ness centres we have seen. It is also right on the slopes with two memorable restaurants. You have to book this early as it sells out quickly. Our second recommendation for Austria is the Spa resort of Obergurgl. This incredibly popular resort is the highest parish in Europe & has an excellent snow record. All the accommodation is of high quality & it is a popular destination year round for spa visits. The number of beds here is limited & the exclusivity attracts a repeat crowd every year. There are never queues here & for the adventurous there is the large resort of Sölden with a huge glacier just 15 minutes down the road. We recommend the Hotel Edelweiss & Gurgl for its great name & central location near the lifts & town centre.

USA Narrowing down the selection for the most exclusive resorts in the USA is very tough but three do stand out from all the rest. Aspen, Colorado has been the home to celebrities & billionaires for 40 years but still stays true to its mining town roots with down to earth locals & strict adherence to an architectural code. For posing & celeb spotting you have to ski on the Ajax Mountain right above the town. The restaurants here are typically large American fare but you can also go very upscale at Piñons, Renaissance, Olives in The St. Regis, & Syzygy. The J Bar in Jeromes Hotel is probaly the best restaurant/bar to catch sight of a few celebrities, but a town like Aspen is way too cool for anyone to consciously notice. We prefer Little Nells which is a little less pretentious.

France Courchevel 1850 has long been the flagship for exclusive ski holidays in France. It is at one end of the huge Trois Vallées ski area but couldn’t be more different from its neighbours Meribel & Val Thorens. Courchevel boasts two Michelin starred restaurants, one is at the Chabichou Hotel & the other is La Bateau Ivre, but the place to be seen is Le Cap Horn which is up on the slopes at 2,050m. From Le Cap Horn you can watch other diners flying into the tiny snow covered Altiport airfield, right below the restaurant deck, for lunch with the rest of the Euro elite. In recent years the Russian Oligarchs have taken over Courchevel 1850 in the first week of January for their New Year party, but the best time to go is in March to catch the sun on one of the many beautiful mountain restaurant decks & of course to be seen. Our favourite hotel is Les Grandes Alps because of it location & excellent spa area.

114

Canada I’ve stayed at the Fairmont Banff Springs in Banff & it is hard to beat for a glamorous ski resort hotel but my vote goes for Whistler Blackcomb which attracts the jet set crowd from across the world to ski its two amazing mountains & experience the Canadian hospitality. The ski school & guiding services here are arguably the best in the world & well worth the costs. The amount of terrain which is available from the lifts is staggering & a guide will show you the tricky little entrances to some of the finest bowl skiing on the planet. Heli-skiing here is very popular & needs to be booked early. It is also a great resort to try skidooing. There’s no point looking past the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Hotel. It is simply superb.

Switzerland There are numerous beautiful chocolate box chalet style resorts in Switzerland but the two most exclusive resorts are not quite like that. The king of bling is the incomparable St Moritz in the Graubünden region. Here the adventurous eccentrics of the gentry risk their lives on the infamous Cresta Toboggan Run, race their horses on the frozen lake, & then try a little skijoring. The skiing is great, but the people watching combined with the off mountain activities make it a mind blowing destination. Go in February to do the Cresta & see the horse races. The Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains gets all the kudos, but for the position & pure opulence we love Badrutt’s Palace. There is also an excellent Club Med here with its own mountain restaurant. The second most exclusive resort in Switzerland was a tough choice but we have given it to Zermatt because Klosters is also in the Graubünden region. No view anywhere in the world can match the magnificence of the Matterhorn. Zermatt is a large town but it keeps its charm due to the absence of cars. You can only arrive by train & all traffic is electric. The old Zermatt area has a lovely rustic feel & the new area has tried very hard to keep the alpine style & elegance. This is a huge resort with countless stunning mountain restaurants that all seem to face the Matterhorn but our favourite is the charming Chez Vrony. We love the grandeur of the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. For a small group try the Chalet Haus Glacier for 6

Italy There can be only one choice for Italy & Cortina is the place where the affluent & fabulous Italians spend their winter breaks. The Italian way of skiing follows pretty closely to their laid back lifestyle & in this resort skiing after lunch is only for the foreigners. The village is very pretty & the shopping straight out of Milan & Florence. In Cortina you rise late, ski in a beautiful setting all morning, find a great mountain restaurant for a 3 hour lunch, siesta, shop, & then eat late & drink well into the morning. Sounds pretty good! The Miramonti Majestic Hotel is a few minutes out of town but it is magic.

The Monuments Men Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 - possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements. From director George Clooney, the film stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman,Bob Balaban and Cate Blanchett.Hopkins.

47 Ronin Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure in 47 Ronin. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected—as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors. As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity.

The Hobbit One of the most fearsome dragons in all of literature, Smaug’s cinematic embodiment is central to this story. Thanks to the wizards at Weta and the frightening voice of the wonderful Benedict Cumberbatch, when Smaug is finally revealed to tiny Bilbo and to us in the audience, he’s a truly terrifying sight to behold. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, continues that cinematic success with a thrilling, fun adaptation that moves faster, takes less time, and provides a great deal more story progression.

The Book Thief The Book Thief is a 2013 American drama film based on the novel of the same name by Markus Zusak, directed by Brian Percival and written by Michael Petroni, with a musical score composed by John Williams. The film stars Emily Watson, Geoffrey Rush, Sophie Nélisse, Ben Schnetzer, Nico Liersch, and Joachim Paul Assböck. While subjected to the horrors of World War II Germany, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. Under the stairs in her home, a Jewish refugee is being sheltered by her adoptive parents.

Zara Home

This collection, clearly influenced by Optical Art, is surrealism in black and white, in which all the items form a set of optical illusions. The abstract figures and prints combine with graphic designs to create an effect of movement. The stripe prints appear in different scales and lengths and mix with black and white paisley, with the occasional fleck of red. Zara Home’s most sober collection this season is inspired by old-fashioned monograms, elegant with their pure lines. Colours such as white, beige and gold appear on silk and satin prints. 120

Leisure-Led Development Architects: DP Architects and Arup associates Location: Singapore Sports Hub

In 2014, Singapore will celebrate the opening of Asia’s first integrated sports, leisure, entertainment and lifestyle destination – The Sports Hub will provide a wide range of sporting, community, retail, recreational and leisure spaces within easy reach of the city center and international airport. The main buildings – the National Stadium, the Aquatic Centre and the Sports Halls – have been designed as flexible multi-sport venues, supporting the widest variety of events throughout the year, day and night.

The Blue Planet Architects: 3XN Location: Denmark

124

Inspired by the shape of water in endless motion, Denmark’s new National Aquarium, The Blue Planet is shaped as a great whirlpool, and the building itself tells the story of what awaits inside. The facade is covered with more than 33,000 small diamond-shaped aluminum shingles, which adapts to the building’s organic form.

National Maritime Museum of China Architects: QUEENSLAND Architects Cox Rayner Location: Tianjin, China

This project won the international competition to design China’s new National Maritime Museum to be located in the port city of Tianjin close to Beijing. The design comprises five hall structures radiating out to the port harbour and converging in a central ‘Preface Hall’. Functionally, the idea is to bring all visitors up a rampart to an elevated level and access from there either of two split levels which occupy each hall. This strategy enabled the collections and operational centre of the museum to be located immediately under the Preface Hall with direct lower level access into each hall. The judges said: ‘This was the most developed scheme in this category. It addressed its relation with the water very successfully. Its form was not overly obvious but could be translated as boats or fish or hands.’

EMPORIA

Architects: Wingårdhs Location: Hyllie Boulevard 19, Malmö, Sweden

Emporia is first and foremost an urban planning project in which offices, housing, and retail come together in a mixeduse development along Boulevarden and Stationsgatan on the south side of Malmö. The main task was to hide inward-looking retail behind a wreath of residential and commercial buildings. The whole shopping complex would thereby eventually become integrated into the fabric of the city.

Amagerforbrænding Architects : BIG Location: Copenhagen, Denmark Amagerforbrænding is in many ways situated on an edge condition. It is a place in the outskirts of Copenhagen, but also the centre for new recreational activities. It divides the local area in two, with factories on one side and housing on the other. It is a place you know from afar, but where few people ever go. On one hand the city of Copenhagen on the other hand Amager. The aim of the project is to tie all these opposing forces together, forming an identity for a new place in Copenhagen. We want to turn it into a place in itself – a destination where people will travel to. Most of the recently build power plants are merely functional boxes, wrapped in an expensive gift paper. The main “function” of the façade is to hide the fact that factories are having a serious image/branding problem. We want to do more than just create a beautiful skin around the factory. We want to add functionality! The ambition of creating added value in terms of added functionality does not stand in contrast to the ambition to create beauty. It does not have to be either/or – it can be both! We propose a new breed of waste-to-energy plant, one that is economically, environmentally, and socially profitable. Instead of considering Amagerforbrænding as an isolated object, we mobilize the architecture and intensify the relationship between the building and the city – ex panding the existing activities in the area by turning the roof of the new Amagerforbrænding into a ski slope for the citizens of Copenhagen. Now is time to re-brand the factory.

Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre Architects: Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) Location: Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi, “As it winds through the site, the architecture increases in complexity, building up height and depth and achieving multiple summits in the bodies housing the performance spaces, which spring from the structure like fruits on a vine and face westward, toward the water” - Zaha Hadid In the island of Saadiyat, Zaha Hadid’s proposal audaciously craves to join this select “club of waterfront venues” and does so with a building that looks ready to dive into the water. From the urban pespective, the Performing Arts Center is located perpendicular to a large coastal boulevard, which is crossed by a footbridge leading to the building. The architect has been inspired by organic themes or nature for the conception of her work, and in fact this building might resemble a group of cosmic eels in frantic race, or a branch extending in several buds. Looking at it in more detail, it is clearly the intention of making a volumetric transition from the cultural district to the waterfront. The building thus establishes a gradual differentiation of domains. This project contains 5 halls, placing the main Concert Hall on top of four other smaller theaters. Additionally, it houses the headquarters of the Academy of Performing Arts. The arrangement of the theaters follow the flow of the overall design but both are organized around a central space to create areas from which one can contemplate impressive vistas. Also, north of the building there is a restaurant under a large terrace. 126

Telus Sky Tower Architects : BIG Location: Calgary,Canada Downtown Calgary has developed as a typical North American city center with a cluster of corporate towers surrounded by a periphery of low-density surburban homes. The Telus Sky Tower creates a lively mixture of living and working at the intersection of lightrail and arterial roads in the heart of the center, creating a more varied and walkable city center for Calgary. It is designed to seamlessly accommodate the transformation from working to living as the tower takes off from the ground to reach the sky. The large floor plates for workplaces recede to achieve the slender dimensions of residential floor depths. The texture of the façade in a similar fashion evolves from a smooth glass façade enclosing the work space to a three-dimensional composition of apartments and balconies. The resultant silhouette expresses the unification of the two programs in a single gesture – in rational straight lines composed to form a feminine figure.

Chengdu Contemporary Art Centre Architects: Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) Location: Chengtu, Southwest China Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) will provide the city of Chengdu with an Art Center. This 200,000 square-meter complex is composed of collection of arts, performance, leisure, and congress venues. It accommodates three auditoria, an art museum, an exhibition centre, a conference centre, a learning centre, bars, restaurants and shops.
