2.Create a peaceful, organized and enjoyable garden-it is important that a garden gives people the peaceful, tranquil and calm feelings. In order to have such qualities, a garden should be well organized and easy to walk in, for example, a safe and wide path encourages people to walk in the garden. 3.Create a safe and efficient garden-Due to the current heavy flow of pedestrians and bike users at Nicholson Street, there is a need to find new solution to solve this problem.

Area of focus

Balanced shade and sun-provides a cool area for garden users to socialise and enjoy the nice landscape. Wide and flat area- Relatively flat area with lesser contour changes which helps to construct any designs easier. Proximity to main paths and street-increases public visibility of the area and hence attracts people to come to the garden for recreational activities. Fewer trees-The construction of the design will not destroy the trees at the surrounding as there are not much trees at this area. Therefore, most of the plants in the selected area are conserved.

False Impression Generating ideas design agenda for landscape feature 1. To create a place that fit in the context of Carlton Garden and Royal Exhibition Building-since The site is a World Heritage site, it is important that the design complements or emphasizes the history of this momentous and renowned building. 2. A design with aesthetic values-aside from the design’s functionality, aesthetic value is crucial as well. In order to attract people to visit this site, the design must be elegant, significant or carries meanings to the current site. 3. Apart from landscape feature, it includes other useful functions-the design might be a place for people to meet or socialize, or it can be a place to hold small functions, or a place that provides entertainment.

ideas formation

Materials such as plaster and plasticine were used to generate ideas. Plaster was used to create surfaces that look like concrete while the plasticine was used due to its malleability and flexibility.

I started searching for ideas by looking at some examples of built design. The pictures above show an awarded water playground built by Water Fun. Aside from the water playground, the Parthenon and roman ancient public bath also fascinate me. They reflect the old, ancient and historic aspects of a country. I tried to combine these two features, the water playground and ancient temple. This two features lead to my design.

False Impression refining ideas

final model

Instead of copying the design of the famous Parthenon, I made some changes. The columns were made of glass which is hollow in the centre to allow water to pass through. Water powered LED light was added to generate light. The front part of the design was a big concrete wall with a small entrance. The slight slant at the top of the wall reflects the contour of the whole Carlton Garden, which is sliding down toward southwest. The concrete wall was a flat piece of wall with no carving or design. It serves a special function which will be discussed later. A wire mesh roof with crystal bits was added to the design.

False Impression

Wire mesh roof with crystals bits. The crystal reflects light very well when light shines on them. The roof will create sparkling top space and bright up the place.

the outside is always different from the inside

outside-opera house inside-underwater

outside-Parthenon inside-rainforest

outside-aboriginal painting inside-beach

Small entrance allows people to bend down their heads when entering. When people entered the place, they will bend up and look up to the sky which is made of shinny crystals.

Big concrete wall allows pictures to be drawn on it. Yearly, new picture will be drawn by famous artist; therefore the wall picture will change every year. The picture might be something that signifies Australia or something special like ancient buildings.

people can go in into the place and play water.

Glass columns with hollow centre that allow water to pass through. Water generate energy to the LED light bulbs and light up the whole place.
