The Wren Boy's
are a lot of fun and have long been celebrated in rural counties and the West of Ireland! The concept is based on legend and plays ourt as boys and young men dress up in various costumes and go around singing and asking for money to bury the Wren. This old Christmas custom has in fact been revived in recent years with processions being held on St. Stephens Day even in Dublin and other locations. There are several legends regarding the 'Wren Boys'."One such tale tells of a plot in a village against some British soldiers during Penal times. The soldiers were surrounded and were about to be ambushed when a group of wrens pecked on their drums raising the alarm. The plot failed and forever more the poor wren became known as 'The Devil's Bird" in Irish lore.
One of the reasons, we are such big fans of AN IRISH CHRISTMAS is because the Wren Dance and legend is told so well! Scene below.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of our Advertisers, Friends and Readers! For two thousand years of Western History, this was the time of year when followers of Jesus Christ celebrated his birth and shared the GLAD TIDINGS! We need that now more than ever. As a society, we are broken. We are in an era of rapid change, growth and pressure. So GO, spread the good news! We are blessed with not just the GLAD TIDINGS but with the ability to solve problems and enjoy the bounty of our endeavors. Despite the naysayers , the reality is that we live in a peaceful time with great promise. We need to dig deep, seek truth and not be pawns to the "Divide and Conquer" ploys that our Kleptocratic Elitist leaders constantly turn out for us. We need to shift gears and get into the Holiday Spirit of Christmas and this issue can offer some great opportunities. Things are opening up; so get out and see an Irish/Celtic Show, visit family and friends and be positive. We look forward to hearing from you and maybe seeing a lot of you at events this year!
M er r y Chr istmas and Happy New Year !

Mannheim Steamroller Christmas by Ch ip Davis The production features the band?s favorite holiday music, is still selling out shows after more than three decades. The production features state-of-the-art multimedia effects in an intimate setting. It is directed by Grammy winner Davis, who co-produces the performances with MagicSpace Entertainment. In 1984, the neoclassical New Age group released Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, an album that changed the sounds of Christmas. Already a multi-Platinum recording artist through Mannheim
Steamroller ?s Fresh Aire series, Davis decided to record an album of holiday music that combined the group?s signature mix of Renaissance instruments with Rock ?n?Roll beats. The resulting album was a runaway hit, and the band became one of the biggest-selling Christmas music acts in history. Mannheim Steamroller Christmas showcases holiday classics and compositions from Davis?ground breaking Fresh Aire series. Complete with dazzling multimedia effects, the show celebrates the 30th anniversary of the first Christmas album and 40 years since the first Fresh Aire album, which introduced Mannheim Steamroller ?s distinctive sound to America.

Ever yt h in g Abou t M ovies Her e at t h e New Academ y M u seu m in Los An geles St or y & ph ot os by Bar bar a Sin ger Ever since the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was founded in 1927, it was their vision to create a museum to tell their story of cinema, past to present. The recent grand opening of the Academy Museum in Los Angeles on Museum Row was the realization of that vision. The dream came true with the brilliant design by Renzo Piano , an architect extraordinaire. His work is known all over the world as well as his transformation of several buildings of the Los Angeles County Art Museum. The art deco landmark building of the May Company Department store, was acquired by the Academy located in Los Angeles at Fairfax Avenue and Wilshire Blvd., which became the site of the new Academy Museum (Saban Building), truly a sight to be seen, promising to be the world?s premiere movie museum. The colossal sphere shaped building adjacent to the museum, has been called a ?flying vessel ready to land and take off ? by its designer Renzo Piano. He also believes that the Academy Museum will ?blast visitors to new worlds of movie making,? . The new building houses the 1000-seat world-class David Geffen Theater and the spectacular open view Dolby Family Terrace. Opening during unprecedented times during the Corona virus pandemic, every precaution was taken by The Academy Museum staff to emphasis
safety first during its opening celebrations, requiring proof of vaccination, negative Covid-19 test and masks in order to enter its portals. Los Angeles now has a 300,000 square foot museum in a seven-story building that showcases what movies do and how they impact all of our lives.

The View from Ireland
Callan?s Kick s By M au r ice Fit zpat r ick A new series of comedy sketches of key Irish figures over the past century is being broadcast on RTE television just now ,?Callan Kick s t h e Year s?. Oliver Callan stars in an array of impersonation roles from Michael Collins to Taoiseach Micheál Martin. The title echoesCallan?s hit radio show on RTE, ?Callan?s Kicks?, his weekly savaging of contemporary public figures in Ireland. Where the television series differs, apart from the medium, is that Callan has addressed himself to the trajectory we have taken since the foundation of the state. As Callan put it, in his publicity for the series, it features?the most, least and barely ever respected figures in Irish history?. There is much to send up in the past hundred years of Irish life and the series is somewhat breathless in doing so. All the predictable cows are tilted: Eamon de Valera and Archbishop McQuaid appear across a table from one another in a scene depicting the carve-up of power during the early decades of the state. The camera pans to reveal that each man is sitting on a woman. Bono and Bob Geldof are hammered as self-absorbed, aging rock stars; Senator David Norris and President Michael D. Higgins are portrayed as balls of pretense and convoluted rhetoric; Gerry Adams?inimitable speech pattern is, well, imitated impeccably. Not shy about donning lady?s clothes, Callan excels as Mary Lou McDonald. The comedian has said that the key to his ?cracking?an impersonation is perceiving a small gesture or tick. In McDonald?s case, it was her prissy way of saying?first of all?. As with the television series, so too on his radio show senior figures in Fine Gael are mediums for Callan?s social anger.Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar appears so gauche on the show that he could hardly feel at ease in his own company and is too consumed by self-satisfaction to be capable of feeling empathy with others. By contrast, Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe, exudess a ccharine charm and dimply smiles that divert from self-serving right-wing policies. Callan undoubtedly misses the grist that former Minister for Housing,Eoghan Murphy, provided through the abortivehousing policies he presided over. And this

He is convulsively angry about the way the country has been run. The state of the health service, the cronyism of politicians and, above all,the circumstances of a mass of young people who have been deprived of a fair chance to buy a place to live is the source of much of Callan?s most piercing satire. The pressures of writing and performing weekly comedy sketches on his radio show have led to repetition. One ongoing skit is about Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney. It portrays him as ?Noveney?, a person so lacking in presence that he is effectively invisible in a room and surprises everyone when he speaks up. If it was ever funny, it no longer is on the 20th occasion. Clichéd jingles and jokes that feature on Halloween,or in the run-up Christmas, are also hackneyed. Other sketches wear better. For example, Mary Lou McDonald, stamping her authority by outlining Sinn Féin?s party direction, finds her speech being overwhelmed as though by a poltergeist within her lungs that sounds uncannily like Gerry Adams. Callan has done this live, and the immediate transference of McDonald?s voice into Adams?voice is a great example of his skill. When he impersonates other politicians, like Boris Johnson and Donald Trump, he understands that they are ludicrous enough just by being portrayed as themselves.

?Liberal Ladies?is a regular sketch as well? a group of women from monied South Dublin who tie themselves in knots to display phony virtues and, in the process, their own vacuity. RTE, the hand the feeds Callan, is also one that he is happy to bite. But his most vicious gouging in that sphere is reserved for RTE?s legion of overpaid and self-entitled presenters. Callan is not averse to lacerating presenters whose slots he may well fill if they were fired. Callan occasionally adopts and sings popular songs, changing the lyrics to poke fun, and he brings poetry into his sketches too. All of this results in Callan being, on his day, a formidable impresario. None of his critics could deny his ability to nail an impression. Many of his listeners (Callan?s Kicks consistently ranks in the top ten radio shows in Ireland by listenership ratings) acknowledge that he is much more than an impressionist. He manages to provide a weekly vaccination that protects against fully contracting the political viruses that our politicians transmit in their discourse. Being able to?pass as the figure he imitates also empowers Callan to stage pranks. He has been a political party?colleague?who desperately phones late at night with a breaking story that ma ycost his listener a night?s sleep. He has turned the tables on interviewers trying to corner him by instead giving back to them a repertoire of their own idiosyncrasies. He would give Conan O?Brien a run for his money. The humour in Callan?s shows substantially depends upon intimately following Irish political life. Dissecting that i sa national pastime. Not every bus stop in the world is enlivened with a conversation about political scandals that waiting passengers have just heard on the radio. But that is
Page 19
what we do in Ireland. So it takes a diligent following of national affairs, as well as an attuned ear,to stay on board with many Callan sketches and to follow him in the persona of politicians like Phil Hogan and the Healy-Rae brothersa s they negotiate the byroads of political shortcuts towards a vote or a cover-up. There may be a fork in the road in Callan?s career in the coming years if a slot opens up at RTE and the executives try to persuade him to channel his social anger on a platform of ?serious discussion?. That would be a ruse to neuter him. So far, however, he has defended his independence admirably and earned the right to keep?kicks?in the title of his shows.

News Analysis & Commentary By John McNally
Popular Opinion In Ireland Shifting Toward A United Ireland
"We Are Living in the End Days of Partition" ...Mary Lou McDonald In her first visit in two years, due to covid restrictions, McDonald was in the US in December to renew the bonds of friendship and common purposewith American friends, including those on Capitol Hill. Support has come from President Biden, influential Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Ritchie Neal, Congressman Brendan Boyle, and others. US support for Ireland throughout the bumpy Brexit and trade negotiations has been vital to preserving the Good Friday Agreement by preventing the return of a hard border dividing Ireland. Congressional leaders from both
parties have repeatedly said they will hold the British Government to their
agreements, such as the Irish Protocol, which keeps the border open in Ireland, and the Stormont Agreement, which promised investigations into unsolved killings during the troubles. Sinn Fein has come to rely on an energized and buoyant Irish America for support both financially and politically. It is a tight-knit relationship these days. As Ciaran Quinn, head of North America for Sinn Fein, noted on this American trip: "It felt more like a homecoming given the support and well wishes we received from political and community leaders...Their interest in Ireland goes beyond a political concern. There is a bond of kinship spanning generations."

There are two options in relation to supplying water to a community: a restoration well or a new borehole well. A well can be donated with a single donation of $8,000 or ?7000 or by crowd-funding your well with your family, friends, school, church or business. A donation of $4000 or ?3500 will restore a previously abandoned, non-functional well to full and safe functionality. These wells were not drilled by Wells of Life, but rather by the national government or other NGOs, some of them as long as a decade ago .

COLCOA Fr en ch Film Fest ival Ret u r n ed Live t o Hollyw ood By Bar bar a Sin ger No doubt about it the Irish community misses those annual Irish Film Festivals at the Directors Guild in Hollywood and the Aero Theater in Santa Monica. Although new Irish films come and go, the Irish Film Festival has not returned. It was exciting to attend the all French Film Festival COLCOA in Hollywood, which returned live at the Directors Guild of America November 1st to 7th. This is one film festival that has the magical ability to bring people together every year and has been doing so for the last 25 years. It is an annual competitive film festival created and presented by the Franco-American Cultural Fund. COLCOA stands for City of Lights and City of Angels and it showcases the best of French cinema during the past year with tributes and film classics revisited.

As always this film festival demonstrated a cross-cultural understanding between France and the United States through the diversity of French cinema endorsing its films and talent. These films are U.S. premieres and often France?s Oscar contenders. Executive Producer and Artistic Director of COLCOA Francois Truffart, a recipient of the Order of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres 2016, has amazing ability to bring the latest and best cinema to Hollywood every year working alongside his Deputy Director Anouchka van Riel, they have promoted COLCOA as a world-class film Festival and the best French Film Festival in the world. With travel restrictions in place during the pandemic, COLCOA was still successful in bringing France?s top directors and talent to Hollywood. Showcasing 55 films and series and 19 shorts, it was a comprehensive display of dramas, romance, family films, comedies and more in features, documentaries and television series.

COLCOA?s dedicated audiences came in large numbers again to the DGA to enjoy French cinema, discussions with filmmakers and tributes and the daily Happy Hour Talks followed by French wine gatherings. It was obvious that festival film viewers were happy to be there in-person with full house capacity of the films. Covid-19 procedures were high priority with mandatory facemasks, proof of vaccination and sanitation protocol. Digital tickets augmented streamlined ticketing online; each quest had a personal code that was recognized at login. Everything was done very efficiently. As always the Opening Night has a distinctive thrill and all the dignitaries were there to greet the guests, including a welcome from the Consul General of France in Los Angeles Julie Duhaut-Bedos at her first COLCOA, since there was not a 2020 Festival. The kick-off film,Emmanuel Carriere?s BETWEEN TWO WORLDS, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival 2021 and starred Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche as an undercover journalist exploring the plight of the cleaning crews on ships and ferries, dealing with their insecurities, degradation and problems for book she is writing as an expose. It was based a non-fiction best seller The Night Cleaner and had universal insights applicable to these workers, mainly women, from any country. The film was very well received and thought provoking.

Ardant. As luck would have filming was in France and Ireland. The story follows a young doctor, who falls madly in love with an older woman that he meets by chance and again years later in Ireland and how he deals with his obsession for her through the years. During the festival many of France?s most popular TV series were viewed with the Winner was L?Opera. Audience pleasers are the French short films and there is always attention to the documentaries. Viewers vote for their favorite films and their tickets are entered into a large drawing for a free trip for two to Paris via sponsor Air Tahiti Nui. The final Festival day was a wonderful day commemorating the 25th Anniversary of COLCOA with a 25 ft birthday celebration cake for everyone to enjoy. It was a pleasure for film lovers to be here and watch the best of French cinema together. COLCOA film winners were announced and honored in Paris this year. Among the film winners were: Critics Award: LOVE AFFAIRS by director/writer Emmanuel Mouret, Audience Award: NIGHT DOCTOR by director/co-writer ELie Wajeman, Best First Feature: IBRAHIM by Samir Guesmi director/co-writer and best Documentary: GALLANT INDIES by Director/writer Philippe Beziat.
During the following days there full day schedules of films from early morning to late night. This festival was dedicated to beloved writer and highly honored director Bertrand Tavernier, who passed away earlier this year. His American friends shared their memories and COLCOA showcased his classic films. There was a Focus on a Composer-Amine Bouhafa, Focus on Filmmaker-Nicole Garcia and Focus on Producer-Philippe Martin. Each had their films premiered at this year ?s COLCOA. Many of the screened films had love themes, my favorite was THE YOUNG LOVERS,

THE CANDLE IN THE WINDOW This Irish Tradition is reminiscent of the Irish American and American custom too.I've been told by Irish friends that this was very big throughout Ireland from the 1950s to 70s but not so much now. In both the Old Country and the US Midwest of my youth, symbolically the candle represented a welcome to Joseph and Mary as they wandered in search of lodgings. The candle indicated also to strangers and especially to the poor that there may be an offering of food in the house within.

THE WREN THEATRE at Th om M acNam ar a's Ir ish Im por t Sh op The Wren is home to concerts, plays, play readings, poetry nights, cabaret shows and traditional Celtic music sessions among other productions. It is located in the Irish Import Shop, a 58 year old Hollywood icon of imported candy, groceries and gifts from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. The facade of the store is that of an old European Shoppe right out of a quaint old Irish Village and the theater is reminiscent of gold gilded melodrama theaters of days gone by. The theater is named after the King of all birds in Ireland, The Wren. It is small but mighty! We like to think of it as the biggest little theater in Hollywood. The theater is similar to a black box in that it is adaptable to host different types of performances. As a traditional theater it can seat 40 with room for more if needed. it can be configured with small tables as a cabaret or comedy space.
As a class room it can host improv or acting classes as well as dance classes with a wall of mirrors It is an adaptable, intimate. artistic work space that is unique in Hollywood. VIP (Ver y Ir ish Per k s SPECIAL ? as low as $90. a sh ow ! Call f or det ails 323 467 6714
