From The Big Screen to the Broadway Stage How the Academy Award-winning indie film sensation was transformed into the 8-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical In 2007, the charming, off-beat Irish film Once, based on a true story, opened to excellent reviews and quickly developed a fervent following. The touching, lyrical musical tells the story of two down-on-their-luck musicians, an angstridden Dublin street singer/songwriter who works as a vacuum repairman, and a Czech immigrant who sells flowers in order to support herself and her family. Girl (as she is known) initiates a friendship with Guy (as he is known), and in the course of a week they make music together, fall in love and part, but not before changing each other’s lives. The movie’s stars, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, also wrote much of the score, and received an Oscar for their beautiful ballad, “Falling Slowly.” Once is simultaneously graceful and gritty, and has a naturalism and intimacy that are generally best achieved in film. Which explains why the noted Irish playwright Enda Walsh was less than enthusiastic when he was asked to write a Broadway musical based on the movie. “I guffawed when my agent called and asked me to speak to the producers,” says Walsh. “I said, ‘What a stupid idea.’ It’s a two-hander with very little plot. It’s delicate. So I called the producers and told them it wasn’t for me. There’s no tradition of musical theater in Ireland, so I rubbished the idea. Then they told me John Tiffany was attached to it as director.” The two men are longtime friends, and although Tiffany also had doubts as to the viability of the material as a Broadway musical, he convinced Walsh not to reject the idea outright. “John said, ‘Let’s just take two days, and we can read the
screenplay and listen to the songs and talk about it.’ So I said, ‘Okay, we’ll do two days. And that’s all we’ll do.’” Not quite. “Those two days convinced us that we wanted to do this show,” says Tiffany. That was the beginning of a journey that led to Broadway and eight 2012 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book (Walsh), and Best Direction of a Musical (Tiffany). The show became such a critical and commercial success that it spawned a London production and a U.S. national tour, which opens on October 1 at the Providence Performing Arts Center. “I never think about adapting films for the stage,” says Tiffany. “That’s not the way I work. And when I was approached about Once, I hadn’t even seen the film. But one of my best friends said, ‘You will love the music.’ So I downloaded the soundtrack, and absolutely loved it. I’d never heard music like that, and the music is the reason why I wanted to do the show. Not just the music itself, but the fact that it’s a story about creating music, a story about the healing power of music. Immediately I thought, ‘We’re going to be able to see actors create that music in front of us’ That’s really exciting. Actors have played instruments onstage for years, but not always in a show about making music.” In reading through John Carney’s screenplay, Walsh discovered there was much he could relate to. “I’m a big fan of the movie Brief Encounter, and I saw similarities,” says Walsh. “There’s a bittersweet pang that really hurts.

tttttCeltic and Pub Music News & Reviews:ttttt Renowned Musical Artists Sue Richards and Carolyn Surrick Set For July Concert at the Coffee Gallery Backstage
Richards and Surrick arrived at their partnership from different musical directions – Richards from the traditional world of Irish and Scottish music (she’s played at the Kennedy Center with the Chieftains, with Liz Carroll, Shannon Heaton, Jackie Moran, Liz Knowles and many others) and Surrick from Early Music – and yet they share an extraordinary chemistry.
The Coffee Gallery Backstage will present Sue Richards, Celtic harp, and Carolyn Surrick, viola da gamba on Sunday, July 20. Sue Richards, fourtime US National Scottish Harp Champion and Carolyn Surrick, one of the country’s most accomplished performers on the viola da gamba bring virtuosity and fine musicianship to their performances of Irish, Scottish and Swedish music.
This unusual combination of instruments has a beauty of its own, and these two women have spent the last two and a half decades recording and touring together with Ensemble Galilei – a shared music, a shared expression of their craft. Their performances have been heard on NPR’s Talk of the Nation, The Diane Rehm Show and All Thing’s Considered, and American Public Media’s Performance Today. Richards has recorded two solo CDs, together they have performed on twelve CDs by Ensemble Galilei, and two CDs by Trio Galilei. In addition their performances with Ensemble Galilei around the country, they are devoted to their work with wounded warriors and their families. In 2008, Richards and Surrick, with fellow musician Ginger Hildebrand, began playing every week for wounded warriors and their families at Mologne House at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Silver Spring. The program was so successful that the veterans said they wanted to be able to hear the music more often, especially in the evenings. To make that possible, Surrick talked to her friends in the industry. All agreed to donate their time from the recording engineer, to the studio, the mastering engineer, the photographer, the graphic artist, and the manufacturer. That effort resulted in the creation of Above and Beyond, and since its release in 2009, CONTINUED PAGE 9

A Conversation with Richard Riordan –by James McDonough Friday the Thirteenth of June, 2014 Brentwood, California
Recently, I had the good fortune to see former Los Angeles Mayor (June, 1993-- June, 2001) at the 90th Anniversary Celebration for The Original Pantry in downtown Los Angeles. See “The Original Pantry at 90” on the Celtic Camera Pages. We had a brief chat and I asked Mayor Riordan if he would be willing to give the Irish Arts & Entertainment an interview. Riordan was kind enough to say yes and gave me his contact information. The date was set for Friday, June 13 at his residence in Brentwood which is also the location of the offices for the Riordan Foundation. I first met Mayor Riordan when he received the O’Connell Award from the Irish American Bar Association in LA back in 1991. Shortly after he announced his candidacy for mayor of Los Angeles. We were on board from the beginning and it was a lot of fun. I remember walking precincts with him in Toluca Lake when he was at just 2% in the polls. The mayor went on to win that election and served the City of Los Angeles for eight years. Riordan was one of the best and most popular mayors that LA has every know. It was an exciting time and the Irish News & Entertainment covered Riordan during the period that he was in office quite thoroughly. The credit for our coverage really goes to Mayor Riordan and his then Field Deputy, Tom LaBonge, who is at present an LA City Council Member. From the start of his years in office, Mayor Riordan made sure that the fledgling Irish News & Entertainment was included in the Press Corps. At his inaugural celebration at the Biltmore, scores of reporters from around the country were on hand. We were assigned a spot next to national correspondents from ABC TV. They asked my editor and I, “Who are you guys?” The local Irish News we replied. The ABC crew was surprised at our access. We explained that Mayor Riordan was quite proud of his Irish American heritage and that our paper had endorsed him early on. We told them that he was a down to earth and loyal guy. “That’s exactly why we are here”, replied the reporter; “He is the rising star of national politics because he comes across just like that!” For our meeting earlier this month, I prepared for the interview; read a bit about Riordan’s background to fill in what I already knew and prepared a list of questions for him. On the day of theinterview I got up to Brentwood a few minutes early and was greeted at the gate by Hillary Higgins, Riordan’s Press Liaison who had arranged the interview. She welcomed me to the estate very warmly and ushered me to the front door and told the housekeeper my name and explained that Mayor Riordan was expecting me. The housekeeper, too, was extremely friendly and I was taken upstairs to the library. The library/study is an important part of the house as it is the place where Riordan does a lot of work, reading and thinking. This room was seemingly the nerve center for all of that. The library was well appointed. and had a work area and a sitting room. Dominating the library was an immense setup of book-laden shelves, about 2 stories high, with rolling wooden ladders.

Sitting there for a few minutes waiting, I became a a bit nervous. I was being overwhelmed with a feeling that this was going to be a disaster. I had not been able to find my old tape recorder and I could not remember how to work the recording app on my smart phone. I felt a bit outclassed and out of place in the elegant surroundings. Riordan came in, we exchanged greetings, shook hands, he told me to call him Dick and motioned me to sit down. I blurted out, “I’m a bit nervous.” Idiot!, I though to myself. Then Riordan took me by surprise, ignoring my remark, he immediately asked me to tell him an Irish joke. That singular act put me at ease. I remarked that my late brother Joe would always start our conversations or visits with the same question, Luckily, I had just heard one and told him the joke about the Irishman and the Scotsman who walked into a pub together, The Scotsman loudly yelled out, “Drinks for everybody, I’m buying!” The next day’s headline in the local newspaper read: Irish Ventriloquist Found Beaten To Death Behind Pub. Riordan roared, he really liked the joke. RIORDAN: I’ve got one for you. You are interviewing me, aask me if I still play golf with Arnold Schwarzenegger. McDonough: Mayor Riorden, do you still play golf with Arnold Schwarzenegger? RIORDAN: Let me ask you something... Would you play golf with a guy who every time he shoots into the rough or the woods --- then he chases after the ball and in one stroke --- it’s somehow in the cup? Huh, would you? Riordan was quite animated and was obviously enjoying the sketch. McDonough: No, I guess not. Riordan continued leaning forward and rising up as he went on. RIORDAN: That’s not all. Would you play with a guy who was always shaving strokes and writing down a lower score, every time we played? I had to agree. McDonough: No sir, I would not.. RIORDAN: Well, neither will Arnold! I roared, loved the joke. Riordan continued, to speak. RIORDAN: We’ll come back to this as that is a very important principle. Self deprecating humor is an essential quality to possess and to practice. Having a sense of humor is one of the important axioms that I teach in my graduate class at UCLA. At this point, let me explain as best as I can what was going on. I was totally relaxed and enjoying the company. As mentioned, I had prepared a series of questions in groups of topics, The first was something that I’ve asked many times before of Irish Americans who I’ve interviewed. I looked at my notes and probed the Mayor. McDonough: Can you tell us about your Irish background; how old were you when you started thinking of your Irish heritage and thinking of yourself as Irish? RIORDAN: Always. Riordan continued by explaining that he felt the Irish connection from early childhood, to as far back as he could remember. His earliest recollections about

being Irish come from growing up in the care of his mother and other family members. He distinctly remembers his two unmarried aunts and Grandmother telling him about Ireland and his Irish Family roots. It was a busy household, described by Riordan as upper middle class. He is the youngest of nine children. Riordan has great admiration and love for his family and especially his parents. His father William O’Brien Riordan was a very successful retail executive. Riordan took great pride in sharing with me a brief bio of his Dad. “Bill” Riordan as he was known was born to parents who immigrated to America from County Kerry. They settled in Boston, Mass where Bill was born. Bill Riordan left school at the age of 12 and soon after got a job as a “boxboy” at Felines department store in Boston. He must have been a genius at retailing and the “Irish DNA of hard work and quick thinking” made him a star. He was the youngest executive that Felines ever had by the age of 18. His retail career is the stuff of Irish family and retail legend; he was recruited to New York and either headed or was second in charge to two of the largest NYC retailers of the day. Bill Riordan died in 1950 when Riordan was twenty. His mother, Geraldine Doyle Riordan ran the family with a no-nonsense approach. He described her to me as a stern taskmaster. He also recalled days of fishing, good talks and long walks in summers on and near the seashore in Massachusetts with his Mother and other family members. She oversaw his early schooling and evidently planted the “no nonesense ethic” in her youngest child quite well. Riordan was also able to visit Ireland for the first time as a teenager in 1948. On that trip met relatives who still lived there. These early family and travel experiences helped form the strong sense that Riordan has of his Irish heritage and helped him develop a deep appreciation of Irish culture and history.

By the time Mayor Riordan had thoroughly explained his early upbringing in answer to that first question, the interview pretty much ceased. Riordan and I continued a delightful conversation about being Irish and American. I don’t think I got back to even one planned question. The morning sped by as I learned what a great wealth of stories, insights and tips for life and success this charming and open Irish American had to offer. Riordan’s family were true believers in a good education. Both parents were strong proponents of a good, solid education. and hard work. Riordan recalled that he often worked as a boy at various part time jobs, paper boy and caddy. It is more than evident that education was given a special value and important place in his upbringing. That factor is no doubt one of the key reasons for Riordan’s great interest in all topics pertaining to the educational process. So much so, that our conversation revolved primarily around Riordan’s educational philosophies, his years as a scholar, as an educator and philanthropist dedicated to fostering a better learning experience. “ONCE”CONTINUED Very quickly I thought I was a good match for the material. I tend to write characters that are inarticulate and lonesome, and something comes into their life that changes them. And from listening to the songs, I thought it might be good for me to do something about Ireland, which was so hurt in the recession. I thought it would be sweet to do a little love letter to Dublin. That was my way in.” The 12 adult members of the cast play at least one instrument, and are onstage virtually throughout the show. “I didn’t want anyone onstage who we didn’t get to know intimately,” says Tiffany. By individualizing each character, adds Walsh, “we built a community, and that became the heart of the piece. They’re an ensemble of misshapen people who sing and tell the story. Watching them play the music and sing and find their voice is very beautiful and very strong. But in addition to making it about community, we also wanted the show to be hugely communal. So how do we do that? We allow the audience onstage.” Prior to the start of the show, the audience is welcome to come onstage and mingle with the cast, who are having a jam session. This bonding ritual doesn’t merely break the fourth wall; it obliterates it. “We wanted the audience to own the experience,” says Walsh. As the show unfolds, the focus is, of course, on the relationship between Guy and Girl, but the audience also catches glimpses of the lives of the other characters. “We needed to be sure that there are all these other love stories in the air. Each person is riffing off a love that’s been lost, that got away. That was the key: for the audience to feel part of the experience, and also to look at the people on the stage and go, ‘They’re us.’” The material has proved to be as powerful onstage as it is on film. “I think what’s very moving about the piece is how sometimes we meet people who we don’t necessarily stay with forever, but they give us the resources to move on to the next part of our life,” says Tiffany. “There’s something very truthful in that. People have said to me, ‘When I was sitting in the theatre watching Once, I felt like I was watching it with everyone I’ve ever loved, whether or not they’re still in my life.”

Conversation with Richard Riordan

Riordan attended the Jesuit run Santa Clara University in California for two years before transferring back to the East Coast to Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. He graduated with a Bachelors in Philosophy from Princeton in 1952. When he was recalling this period at Princeton, Riordan mentioned the importances of “Maritain”. I guess I looked blank as he immediately asked, “Are you familiar with the work of Maritain?” (Jacques Maritain, an influential French Catholic philosopher. Maritain taught the importance of “universal truth” and service to others.) No, I replied. Riordan basically said, “Well you should read him {his book(s)}, his philosophy has influenced me a lot.” He did not elaborate too much on the topic aside from those comments. I got the impression that it got him thinking about social responsibility and philosophy in a new light. Riordan did say that he was not really sure at that point in his life if he was going to study philosophy more. The Korean War intervened and then a “mental flip of the coin” led him to Law School in Michigan. Korean War and Law School Riordan served in the Korean War as a field artillery lieutenant for the U.S. Army. He told me that he was personally lucky during the war, but that he witnessed a lot of injuries among friends and that the general mayhem and misfortune that he witnessed had a lasting effect on him. Following an honorable discharge, he earned his law degree at the University of Michigan. Riordan went on to graduate first in his class from the University of Michigan Law School. He mentioned that he enjoyed that time in school the most and that the University of Michigan was his favorite school. That salient fact is an indication of Riordan’s ability to focus and to enjoy hard work. I think one of the most essential forces that drives and shapes Richard Riordan is his strong belief in acquiring and using knowledge. He is the very epitome of a Renaissance Man, one who is interested in all things. But so are a lot of other people. His ability to put to use and inculcate what he discovers and learns into productive actions is what make him different. After graduation from law school in 1956, Riordan became the sole recruit of the prestigious Los Angeles law firm of O’Melveny and Myers. His performance there and during this time period was spectacular in many ways. It is from Rordan’s recollections of these years that I realized how good he was at putting into productive positive action what he learned. He told me that he was initially assigned to do Initial Public Offerings (IPO’s) which at that time were gaining popularity in an expanding post war economy. Most lawyers were doing one at a time, Riordan would handle 2 or 3 and at a fast pace. Riordan also related how he had inherited about $80,000 from his father. It was also during this period that he started investing that money in the stock market, some of it on margin. He did well and turned his nest egg into about $350,000. At this point, he started investing in “High Tech for the day” start ups. One of the first was a cassette tape maker. He became what is known today as “a venture capitalist” he did well. In our continuing conversation, Riordan touched on topics that were of great interest to him. More stories about money making were not on the agenda, no talk of Mattel or other robust ventures that I had read about. His class in Ethics and Leadership at the Anderson School of Business at UCLA was one

such topic that kept popping up. He explained to me with various stories of actual events and conversations with some really interesting people like Ronald Reagan how important these principles were. For clarity, I will list Riordan’s Axioms for Success here and then illustrate them with an example; “a corollary” from him when possible. Riordan emphasized that to succeed, one must possess and exercise these qualities. • Courage…Take risks • A Sense of humor • Kindness and Caring • The ability to relentlessly pursue a goal. “You must get up when you fall.” • Remember it is easier to ask forgiveness than to get permission. During the course of our conversation, Riordan referenced each of these points and explained to me how important each one was in turn. We briefly touched on the importance of a great sense of humor already. He remembered Ronald Reagan’s good nature and wit. He also recalled Reagan telling him that it was essential to be kind and to like people. Reagan told him that you must genuinely care for people. He emphasized that Reagan said, not to just act it but to really like and care about them. Also, to make an effort at making people like you. To offer positive qualities l that will help people to like you. The conclusion of of A Conversation With Richard Riordan will be in our next issue. In Part II Riordan’s recollections about his years as Mayor are filled with great examples of his unique approach to the job. The Axioms for Success are covered and we recount some of the challenges he faced, especially during the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.

Celts in California LA’s St. David’s Day Festival Founder and Author Lorin Morgan-Richards Lorin Morgan-Richards (b.1975) is a children’s book author, poet and illustrator, known mostly for his humor, nonsense, and thought provoking work. Richards, of Welsh and Swiss descent, is also the Publisher of Celtic Family Magazine and is the founder and Chief Executive for the Los Angeles St. David’s Day Festival. Morgan-Richards is well respected and appreciated by the Celtic Community at large in Southern California. Morgan-Richards has an interesting background, he was raised in an converted old schoolhouse in Beebetown, Ohio. Richards spent countless hours drawing the fifty-some odd pets, most of which were cats, and writing them into stories. Inside there was an extensive collection of folk stories to read and a family pump organ his mother taught him to play. Richards ancestor was the 19th Century poet Robert Dennison Morgan. Richards suffered from dyslexia in childhood and struggled to keep up with his peers. This in turn, caused him to become more focused on creative outlets. While at University, Richards initially studied music and had some minor success in producing musical ventures between 1996 and 2002, including ‘ENKI’ based on Zecharia Sitchin’s book the Twelfth Planet’, and ‘An Occurrence Remembered’ centered on Ambrose Bierce’s short stories (premiered November 2001 in New York City). Moving from New York to Los Angeles, Richards co-created and curated a free Indigenous American film series entitled Bringing The Circle Together focusing on social political issues affecting Indigenous peoples. The series ran monthly from May 15, 2008 until March 21, 2012 with special guests, speakers and performers. At the series on February 25, 2010, a historic meeting between representatives of the Ioway Nation and the Tongva Nation marked the first time a California tribe gathered with a Midwestern tribe. Richards is also actively involved with organizing for Welsh Americans coordinating the 2011 West Coast Eisteddfod, the first Eisteddfod in Los Angeles since 1926. The Irish In The American Revolutionary War “The colors bled as they overflowed, Red, White and Blue; Green, White and Gold.” For hundreds of years, from the early 1600s through the first third of the Twentieth Century; Irish immigration to America has been of paramount importance to the development and history of the United States. During the first one hundred and fifty years after the English settled on the northeast, midAtlantic and southern territories of the new (To Europeans) continent; the Irish came along in great numbers. Tens of thousands settled on land that would eventually become the British American Colonies. Long before The Great Famine, an Gorta Mór, or Ellis Island, the Irish came in great teeming numbers. Beset by political and religious persecution, forced off their land by their English masters, sent as indentured servants and in many cases as slaves by Cromwell, the Irish by the hundreds of thousands were part and parcel of the fabric of early Colonial America. Scots-Irish came too and settled most of the south and in the Appalachians. It is no wonder that during the American Revolutionary War, tens of thousands of Irish farmers, tradesmen, laborers and new immigrants took up the call to fight the British; more than any other group. There were more officers, too, in Washington’s Colonial Army of Irish descent or birth than any other nationality.

In his landmark book, The Irish in the American Revolution and their Early Influence in the Colonies, published 1907, James Haltigan touched on the fact that the Irish contributions were being neglected by historians, politicians and the public. The book is a treasure, well sourced and full of tales, people and places of great Irish heroism during the formation of the United States. This uninformed trend regarding the true place of the Irish has accelerated in the 100 plus years since Haltgan’s book was published. Irish born musician, balladeer, songwriter, and historian/antiquarian Derek Warfield has made a valuable contribution to Ireland’s place in American History. A special group of Irish men and women have been responsible for preservation of the tradition of Irish ballad singing over the past 50 years. Derek Warfield is a distinguished name among them. Page 19 LEGACY – THE YOUNG WOLFE TONES In 2001, after nearly 40 years performing, the legendary Wolfe Tones parted with their founder and leader – Derek Warfield. No other Irish folk group, before or since, told the story of Ireland so completely and unapologetically. But for Derek’s hunger and desire to continue to further the story of Ireland through song, an ancient tradition might have lost perhaps its most iconic figure. In 2006 Derek put together a band containing some of the finest musicians and singers in Irish music – The Young Wolfe Tones.
Damaris Woods - Banjo Woods is from Co. Meath and is recognized as one of the foremost banjo players in Irish music. She has made a major contribution in popularizing the banjo within Irish traditional music. Damaris has performed an extremely hectic touring schedule over the last decade across the world. She has appeared on the Irish Spring Tour in Germany and been part of performing groups in North America, Australia and the prestigious Celtic Colours Festival in Cape Briton, Canada. Woods has appearances on many radio and television shows including Ireland’s The Late Late Show (RTÉ). Woods is also a gifted music and many of her students have been prominent prizewinners in traditional music competitions over the last number of years. On an annual basis Damaris organizes the hugely popular traditional arts camp – The Ag Seinm Traditional Arts Camp in Co. Cavan, Ireland. Despite her own hectic schedule she still manages to find time to teach at the Joe Mooney Summer School in Drunshambo every year as well as The University of Ulster, Coleraine. Peadar Hickey – Guitar and Vocals Dublin’s Peadar Hickey has been delivering the songs of Ireland’s history to audiences at home and abroad for over a decade. A regular fixture on the Dublin city folk and traditional music circuit, Peadar learned his trade on stage at The Arlington Hotels, Oliver St John Gogarty’s and The Temple Bar in Dublin’s Cultural Quarter. In 2010, Hickey moved to New York City and now performs mainly on the Irish American circuit, teaming up with notable musicians such as Pio Ryan (banjo), Matt Mancuso (fiddle) and Vonnie Quinn (fiddle). On St Patrick’s Day 2013, Hickey was invited to join All-Ireland winning accordion player Martin O’Connell in a performance at the New York Mayor’s residence – Gracie Mansion. Hickey is currently an instructor of guitar for traditional Irish accompaniment at the Irish Arts Center in Manhattan. Daniel O’Sullivan – Uileann Pipes and Vocals O’Sullivan is from Kilcullen in Co Kildare. He has been playing music from a very young age. His mother was a music teacher who taught classical music and taught him various instruments since the age of 5. O’Sullivan has recently joined ‘Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones’ and is very excited at the prospect of singing and playing instrumental music with such a diverse and eclectic group that has such a passion for Irish culture and history, as well as performing to a wider audience. This will be the Fifth World Cup that we have covered since our inception as the Irish News of California (Now, the Irish Arts & Entertainment) in 1992. Ireland was in the World Cup in 1994 and it was an exciting time. Since then Americans have slowly started taking more of an interest in the world’s most favorite sport and in the USA Team. • There is a bit of a tradition of gathering in pubs and enjoying all of the matches with friends and fellow patrons. See the calendar listings for pubs that we know about that are are going all out to show all the World Cup games. • The world’s most popular athletic competition is sure to delight fans and friends with raw excitement and great sportsmanship! • The USA team was a long shot to even get past the first game against Ghana, but we won 2 to 1! The first round was tough on England as they lost to Italy. • One thing is sure, there will be no better place, if you are not going to Brazil, to enjoy this incredible contest of heart and skill than at a pub! • Miracles happen especially in Soccer, so keep up the good thoughts. The USA faces a favored Belgium at presstime.

Irish born balladeer and song writer, Jerry McLean has often been compared to Christy Moore, another great musical artist. A native of County Mayo, McLean acquired a natural affinity for music from his talented singer/accordion-playing father. He began tinkering with all things stringed at about five. When the family moved to England he found himself on his thirteenth birthday with his first real guitar, McLean explained, “one that didn’t draw blood from my fingertips.” Through numerous bands in high school and to Australia where he played on and produced on the BMI label, and finally to Los Angeles. McLean is not afraid to let go at his live performances, singing Irish favorites and original folk to light rock songs. From the tips of his toes he projects a vocal style that is swimming with heartfelt warmth. Every note and word of every song is delivered with as much love and/or pain as any author could possibly have wished for. McLean has been a prolific writer of music, lyrics and poetry all of his adult life. In hundreds of venues throughout the world you would have found McLean entertaining a wide variety of audiences, these days however its mostly California, where he now calls home. FRIDAY NIGHT Gates will open at 5:00PM A fantastic opening night is in store for those who will be attending this year’s GetShamrocked mostly Irish Music Extravaganza! The Opening group for the festival will be the Keltic Cowboys from Arizona who go on stage at 6:00PM. This five piece band is one of the most popular Celtic Rock bands in the Southwest. They have been releasing original CD’s, playing a lot of festivals and concerts while steadily gaining in popularity since being founded over 10 years ago. The five piece band consists of frontman and founding member Frank Mackey, who not only pens the songs, but plays multiple instruments including the Highland Pipes, Banjo, Mandolin and Accordian. The band was founded in 2010 by Johnny Carey and quickly gained acclaim and a solid fan base. They released their debut album in 2011 and have been touring around the US and overseas ever sine.
