A Proclamation
During the month of St. Patrick's Day, we celebrate I rish-American Heritage Month and the tremendous role I rish immigrants and their descendants have played in the development of our great Nation. I rish-American Heritage Month is a great opportunity to celebrate the nearly 33 million Americans with I rish ancestry and their tremendous contributions to the betterment of our country. T his month, and every month, we appreciate their efforts in helping usher in a new era of American prosperity. I rish Americans have distinguished themselves in every sector of American life. Many have been among the key architects of our country's greatness. Nine of the men who signed our Declaration of I ndependence were of I rish origin. Presidents Andrew Jackson, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and many others have traced their roots to the Emerald I sle. Businessman Henry Ford, founder of one of America's most iconic companies, was the son of an I rish immigrant. For centuries, the tenacious I rish spirit, paired with American self-reliance, has helped I rish immigrants and their descendants realize incredible dreams. With religious devotion, strength rooted in the love of family, and confidence in the promise of America, I rish Americans have engaged in the American experience in robust and meaningful ways. T heir neighborhoods, schools, churches, and workplaces have affirmed the importance of faith, industry, and learning. I t is, therefore, no wonder that American art, business, and public life are marked by I rish names and symbols. T his month, Americans across the country will don the traditional green garb as we celebrate the patron saint of I reland in an annual tribute to our shared and cherished heritage with that great country. As we spend this month honoring I rish Americans, we also pledge to further strengthen our relationship with the Emerald I sle itself, as we look forward to a bright future of greater friendship, cooperation, and commerce for centuries to come. NOW, T HEREFORE, I , DONAL D J. T RUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 2018 as I rish-American Heritage Month. I call upon all Americans to celebrate the achievements and contributions of I rish Americans to our Nation with appropriate ceremonies, activities, and programs. I N W I T NESS W HEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day of February, in the year of our L ord two thousand eighteen, and of the I ndependence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-second.

From the opening notes of John Williams?Symphonic Suite from Far and Away to the final strains of Tony Finno?s arrangement of Blizzard Train, concert-goers will want to kick up their heels to the spirited jigs and folk melodies from Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Indeed, champion dancers from the Claddagh Dance Company will join the musicians on stage to strut their Irish step-dancing stuff for everyone?s enjoyment! An ensemble will join the Long Beach Symphony to lend their special Irish sounds: M att M ancuso(lead vocals, guitar, trumpet, fiddle), Buddy Connolly (button accordion, whistles, piano, vocals), L indsey Hor ner (upright and electric bass, baritone sax, vocals), and Dave Barckow (lead vocals, percussion, guitar). Eileen Ivers has firmly established herself as the pre-eminent exponent of the Irish fiddle in the world today. Her long list of accomplishments includes a GRAMMY award, Emmy nomination and headline
performances with the London Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops and over 40 orchestras across the world. Ivers is the original musical star of Riverdance, a founding member of Cherish the Ladies and a Nine Time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion. Lest there be some confusion, the fiddle and the violin are essentially the same instrument; the difference in nomenclature relates to the type of music being played; this is an evening of music for fiddles! The playlist for the first half of the program features several favorites written by Ms. Ivers, including Canbrack Girls, Bygone Days, Walk On and Mackerel Sky Medley. After intermission, the program resumes with the fast-paced jig The Irish Washer Woman (arr. Leroy Anderson), then moves on to Pachelbel?s Frolics (arr. K. Sammut), an ingenious blend of his well-known Canon with Celtic folk melodies. One of the evening's highlights will be Irish composer Bill Whelan?s ground-breaking Riverdance (1994), that spawned a worldwide craze for Irish dancing and Celtic music and also won him a GRAMMY. EILEEN IVERS Broadway music director, pianist and conductor, ...has been proclaimed ?a national William Waldrop, who currently serves as Principal Conductor of the Broadway revival of Cats will lead treasure? by NCTA Board Chairman George Holt as she celebrates her 30 plus year the orchestra as guest conductor. Irish Music Makers SEO LINN We first heard about the Irish Singing Group Seo Linn (SHOW LIN) last year when visiting a friend who had discovered them while in Ireland. They are quite well known and popular in Ireland! They are also different from the pack for several reasons! They sing in Irish Gaelic mostly as they are part of the Gaielge Movement and they had the good sense and fortune to compose and sign Ireland's World Cup anthem in 2016! For many years, we have been doing our Annual Irish Music Makers issue and we are delighted to find an Irish Song with that theme!!

GREENI NG YEAR NI NE I n 2017 a record 295 iconic landmarks across the world went green for St Patrick?s Day, as part of Tourism Ireland?s Global Greening initiative, putting the island of Ireland centre stage and kick-starting the tourism season. The final tally is not yet in for 2018 but it is probably going to be higher! Across 45 countries and from Rome to Rio, London to Las Vegas, prominent sites and icons go green to celebrate Ireland's Patron Saint and National Day. In New York, thr One World Trade Center (the main building of the re-built World Trade Center complex ) was illuminated and it is on the 2018 list of structures that will pay tribute to the Great Saint and Irish Culture and History. The beautiful Petit Palais on the Champs-Élysées in Paris and the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc in Barcelona. They were joined, in this eighth year of Global Greening, by some old favourites like the Colosseum in Rome, (pg 20), the Sacré Coeur basilica in Paris, (Pg 20), the Great Wall of China, Niagara Falls and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro( pg 19). CEO of Tou r ism Ir elan d; ?This is the ninth year of Tourism Ireland?s Global Greening initiative and each year I am delighted to see even more well-known attractions and landmark sites wishing to get involved and join our St Patrick?s celebrations. The success of our Global Greening initiative is due in no small part to the great work that has been carried out across the world by Irish people and the Diaspora. I would particularly like to thank the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for the great support we receive from the Irish embassy network. The eagerness of cities and countries everywhere to take part underlines the strength of the deep connection that people all over the world feel to Ireland. More than 70 million people around the world claim links to the island of Ireland and St Patrick?s Day is a truly unique opportunity to reconnect them with their heritage. ?People across the world instantly identify St Patrick?s Day with the island of Ireland and that heightened profile allows us to put the Ireland holiday experience in the spotlight ? from Sydney to Seattle and from Rome to Rio de Janeiro. Our St Patrick?s programme this year will span Great Britain, Mainland Europe, North America, Australia, as well as emerging tourism markets such as China and India."

SANTA BARBARA FILM FESTIVAL FETES IRISH ACTRESS SAOIRSE RONAN WITH HER THIRD SBIFF TRIBUTE THE SANTA BARBARA AWARD Feature & Photos by Barbara Singer Irish ?American actress, Bronx born, SAOIRSE RONAN is considered one of todays amazing Young talents. As the star of writer & director Greta Gerwig?s ?Lady Bird? film, SAOIRSE was welcomed back to the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) 2018 as an honoree with the tribute of The Santa Barbara Award, presented to a person in the entertainment industry, who has made a great contribution to film. Her performance this year has received major acclaim, as well as an Oscar nomination. The SBIFF has a major role in the Hollywood awards season. Past tribute visits to SBIFF for SAOIRSE were in 2016 with the award of Outstanding Performer of the Year for her role as a lonely Irish girl who relocated to New York, marries and longs to return to Ireland in ?Brooklyn.? This remarkable performance earned her an Oscar nomination. She was first tributed in Santa Barbara as a Virtuoso in 2010 for her part in ?The Lovely Bones? by director Peter Jackson. Her first Oscar nod was at age 12 for Best Supporting Actress in ?Atonement.? Early on SAOIRSE was recognized as a compelling young star.

At this special occasion at the SBIFF, SAOIRSE was cheered by fans and spent pre-tribute moments for photos, signing autographs and posed for selfies with local young fans thrilled to see her back again. Just about all of them have seen her latest film ?Lady Bird.? Never a dull moment for this powerful 23 year old young actress since her break through role in Joe Wright?s ?Atonement? at age 12 with an Oscar nod, she went on to other defining roles such as: in ?Hanna? as a trained assassin,?Byzantium? as a vampire,?The Grand Budapest Hotel? as a pastry chef, ?The Lovely Bones? as a girl, who has been raped and murdered and Peter Weir ?s ?The Way Back? as Irena, a polish orphan in WWII.In the works this year is her part in Ian McEwan?s ?On Chesil Beach? and her upcoming role as Mary Stuart in ?Mary Queen of Scots? plus Chekhov?s ?The Seagull? with Annette Benning and Elizabeth Moss. When she does have free time, you will find her reading, traveling or watching films. This year Ronan won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama, ?Lady Bird,? Here is a teen?s tale of a high school student in Sacramento. CA. As Christine ?Lady Bird? McPherson, she is uncanny and outspoken about her beliefs and has continual riffs with her mom, played by Laura Metcalf, hoping to move to New York for college, while her Mom tries to keep her home. She showed the quality of her craft in Gerwig?s film, where audiences could empathize with her. She was nominated for a BAFTA and SAG Awards for her compelling portrayal as well.
The lure of Broadway has now reached this young actress with her debut in Arthur Miller ?s ?Th e Cr u cible? Ronan also has animation credits, as the voice of Marguerite Gachet in the biographical animated film ?Loving Vincent? and she even hosted the aging but hanging on "Saturday Nigh t Live "which irinically was a hit before she was born.

Ow en Dar a was born in Cork, Ireland. While in his early twenties, he left and began making his living as busker, singing and playing his guitar on street corners throughout Europe, parts of the Middle East, Asia and Australia. While living in Melbourne, he started performing stand-up comedy and soon became a headline act on the comedy circuit. For several years, he performed his comedy in various parts of
the world and often appeared as a comedic guest on TV. Moving on, Dara needed to explore his other creative passions. He moved to the United States and began performing his original solo shows (Two Pint Wonder) and music in bars and clubs in LA while taking classes in writing, acting, and film-making. It worked! This is Dara's second film and the third is in post production.

B y T I N A D AY, The Holy Fail? You Can?t Pull a Fast One on a Nun Recently married couple, Brendan (Owen Dara) and Nicole (Jessica Lancaster), are settling into their future life together in Ireland, but Nicole feels like things are a little too settled.Brendan is quite fastidious, harping on Nicole to hang up her clothes, and put her coffee cup in the recycling bin.Nicole is growing increasingly bored of discussions of utility bills and contemplates returning to the US. Meanwhile, Brendan?s mate Colm (Stiofan Wyley) feels like he and his co-workers are being taken advantage of by their boss, Ronan McSweeny (Martin Blower), and deserve more compensation. He has installed a nanny cam in his boss?office with the hopes of capturing the combination to the safe. When Colm comes to Brendan soliciting his help with the heist, Brendan categorically refuses to help. But then, when Nicole voices her restlessness and desire to return home, Brendan shares the plans to rob the safe with her.She enthusiastically shares her approval and wants to be part of the fun. When their friend Shane (Sean McNally) stumbles upon their scheme, they reluctantly have their thieving foursome. But this isn?t your typical caper, as you can imagine when you have four rookie thieves. As the movie progresses through the heist planning and execution, there are a series of obstacles that have to be overcome, and writer Owen Dara takes the opportunity to show us a glimpse into small town Irish life while tickling our funny bones. The practical joking pair of Garda (police) are one of the highlights of this movie. The partners (Kevin McCormack and Frank Prendergast) are constantly trying to ?one up? each other and at one point, Brendan gets mixed up in the fray. This is a great base for some comical near misses and keeps the audience on their toes as to when the robbers will get pinched. There are also some great scenes where the robbers are ?hiding in plain sight.? Ultimately, it isn?t the jokester Garda, but the nuns that administer the penitence on our foursome with comical results. One of the best quotes in the movie is a line from Sister Assumpta when Nicole tells her that she needs to leave early to catch her flight to America which is completely non-refundable.The Sister matter-of-factly states ?There?s one thing you have to remember about life; it?s completely non-refundable too.? During the rolling of the credits, some old friends of ours, O?Brien?s on Wilshire, got a shout out for helping to produce the film by hosting a fundraiser.
" The Holy Fail is a fun heist/caper with an I r ish accent, and j ust an over all good time."

KEN O'M ALLEY, Pr of ile & Spr in g Sch edu le A mutual friend once describer Ken O'Malley as, "the hardest working Irish musician", that he knew! I believed my friend then (that was about 25 years ago) and I still believe it today. O'Malley is seemingly tireless and he is also one of the most dedicated and straight forward Irish Music Makers that I know! It is not just that zeal for his craft that makes him stand out; O'Malley is by any standard a mega talent, a great singer with an amazing voice, a gifted instrumentalist (guitar & mandolin) a song writer and storyteller. All this and his engaging and affable stage presence are much appreciated gifts to which both his legions of fans and music critics/writers will attest. He is also quite the band leader as he has formed or been in three of the most popular and best Irish Traditional bends to have even come out of California, The Mulligans The Twilight Lords and the newest of them, The Ne'er Duwels.. O'Malley also frequently performs solo. as a duo. and has played in musicals.
EVERY WEEK ON TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS STARTING ON M ARCH 6 Starts @ 7:30pm Both Nights The Wren Theater Space at the Irish Import Shop will be hosting an open Traditional Music Session on Tuesday nights On Thursday Night OPEN MIC If you have any ideas for shows, classes or performances, we would love to hear from you and we will keep you posted as events are scheduled. RESERVATIONS:www.deanproductionstheatre.com ****** TheImportance of Being Earnestis the most popular of the comedies written by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). Set (for this particular production) in 1920s London and in Shropshire, England, it involves the doings of two best friends, Jack and Algy (Algernon).Jack lives in the country, protective of his young ward, the ?excessively pretty? heiress Cecily Cardew. But he likes to get away to London and the attractions of the city, so he has invented a rascally brother in London named Ernest to whom he must occasionally attend, necessitating his periodic departure from the country. The biggest draw in London for Jack is Algy?s cousin, the beautiful Gwendolen Fairfax.
M ar ch
Algy, meanwhile, goes to Shropshire posing as Ernest in an attempt to woo Cecily. As Shakespeare said, ?Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.? It also turns out that both women are attracted to men with the name of Ernest, so naturally both fellows make arrangements to have themselves re-christened. In the course of things, the deceptions of Jack and Algy will be found out. Can their lady loves possibly forgive them? It ultimately turns out that Jack and Algy share more in common than they could possibly have imagined, and that they have destinies that neither could have suspected. The Importance of Being Earnesthas been celebrated on several counts: for its satirical dissection of English mores, hypocrisy, and class snobbery; for its crisp, witty banter that snaps and crackles, influencing the best of 20th Century film comedies to come. But Wilde believed that more than anything else, a comedy should befunny, and this play delivers. Rebecca Lynne, the Founder and Artistic Director of Dean Productions Theatre Company, helms this production. She has previously directed in New York, Washington D.C, London, Bali, New Jersey and California. Her previous directing credits includeThe Comedic Tragedy of Macbeth, The 39 Steps,A Midsummer Night?s Dream, The Last Five Years, Into the Woods, The Lady of Shallot, Love?s Labours Lost, The Mikado, The Ghost Sonata: The Opera, much more. Her cast forThe Importance of Being Earnestincludes (in alphabetical order) Mannette Antill, Mieko Beyer, Henry Carbeck, Pascal Gercourt, Kelly McCall, Kenyon Meleney and

ONCE FIERCELY INDEPENDENT IRISH NOW EM BRACE EU CONTROL According to a recent feature in the WSJ, Ireland may be the most \pro-European country in the European Union. A 2017 Poll found that 87% of Irish citizens think EU membership is good for the country; only 12% responded that Ireland should follow the U.K. out of the EU.The most recent Eurobarometer survey found that 80% of Irish citizens are confident about the outlook for the EU, the highest of any member state. Yet despite this optimism, Ireland?s relationship with the EU is bound to get more complicated.

Over the past 45 years, EU membership has bought two great benefits to Ireland. The first is a dramatic economic transformation. Since it joined in 1973, income per capita has soared from 60% of the EU average to the second highest in the EU. Memories of the 2009 banking crisis are already fading fast. The economy has grown by more than 5% every year since 2014, fueled by booming exports and large inflows of foreign investment; unemployment has fallen to 6.1% from a peak of over 15%, while average house prices have risen by 72% since 2013.
