SO MUCH TO DO & SEE: SEASIDE HIGHLAND GAMES In VENTURA
The Seaside Highland Games, Ventura's very own Scottish/Celtic Festival, will return to their home on California?s Central Coast this October 12 & 13, 2019. The Ventura County Fairgrounds is the ideal spot for this many-faceted Festival. Every Games activity from bagpipe bands to sheepdog demos is within easy access of the Fairgrounds?Main Street? our ?Clan Row.? Beginning in 2002, the Organizers have held that a proper Highland Festival must have as its backbone a good representation of Scottish Clans and Societies. True to this day, you will find over seventy (70) such Societies ready and able to discuss their wee foothold on the true Scottish soil. And to welcome you as either a newcomer or old friend? or direct you to someone best able to help you trace your family lineage. Perhaps you just came for the music. Well, do not dismay my friend. We are so pleased to offer a fine array of artists starting with the internationally renowned ?Seven Nations? making a rare West Coast appearance and the always fine music of Sligo Rags--taking a break from Disneyland appearances. Highland Way lead artists Paul Castellanos and Brian Caldwell will keep your toes tapping as will newcomers Cockswain and fine tunes from Nerea,
the Fiddler. All for the price of your admission ticket! Dancing has always been a huge part of Seaside?s stage presentations from youthful Scottish Highland Dance to the more mature Scottish Country Dance (and, yes, you can most certainly join in)! And did I mention the lively Ventucky Cloggers who will amaze you with their rapid-fire heel and toe moves?! But no Festival is complete without the amazing Scottish Heavy Athletes. Look to Morgan Arena for these talented fellas and gals tossing, throwing, heaving impossibly heavy implements to new height and distance records! And, yes, the long pole-like cabers are there to be turned as well. That event, like the stage shows, continues nonstop throughout the weekend. If you can?t do without bagpipes? and which of us can? you are in the right place! Plan your weekend to arrive at Saturday's NOON GRAND PARADE and OPENING CEREMONIES which will dazzle your eyes, ears and cellphone cameras!! All the guest pipe and drum bands will march interspersed with Clan/Family groups past the central Alex Beaton Stage to officially open the Games to all comers! Grab a chair or bleacher seat for this spectacularly bright and colorful event.

If you don?t have your very own kilt or tartan garb, look no further than the many high quality vendors to find exactly what you need. And while there, why not sample some delicious Welsh Cakes or the wonderful Scottish meat pies or fish & chips and so much more...perhaps a Scottish Cerveza??!! Many of these young folks will be competing for prize money and honors in dance, piping & drumming and athletics. Be there to cheer them on as we grant them well-earned prizes! Classes in genealogy, Gaelic speaking, Scottish history and Scotch! So much to be learnt! Friday night before the big weekend is a lively evening you are welcome to enjoy including a great Single Malt Tasting followed by a fine buffet supper and Scottish Fashion Show! These events? A Scottish Evening? kick off the weekend at the beautiful Four Points Sheraton and are not to be missed! Make your plans to join us on the Fairgrounds in October. Lovely Buenaventura awaits! Irish Music News & Reviews ANAM Irish Culture and Arts presents:
Th e Lost For t y w it h Th e Ram blin g Hou se Ban d Come celebrate traditional IRISH HERITAGE MUSIC with some of the best when ANAM and the Rambling House Band returns to Garry Marshall Theatre on October 7. THE LOST FORTY. The performs the Irish-influenced music of men who roamed the Great Lakes region in the days when pine was king. Their sources and their approach celebrate two centuries of Irish musical influence on the under-explored musical traditions of the north woods. Their show includes incredible archival photos, rich history, colorful stories and enough richly interwoven bouzouki and guitar lines to fill a loom. "If you like your folk songs collected with depth and presented with taste, if you are a fan of Andy Irvine and DaoirĂ Farrell, this is your secret territory. The Lost Forty is a treasured find." -Irish Music Magazine ?[The Lost Forty] makes old Minnesota folk songs feel relevant and alive. ? Surely, the ghosts of Minnesota are listening to their songs, reimagined, with pride. The Lonesome Hours of Winter is a fabulous album.? -The Irish Echo The bandy is comprised of Bemidji, Minnesota native Brian Miller and Wisconsinite Randy Gosa. Miller (vocals, bouzouki, guitar) and Gosa (mandola, guitar) are both renowned in the Irish traditional music world for their work with artists (including Bua and Myserk) in the US
and Ireland. Miller is a 2014 recipient of the Parsons Fund Award from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and has been awarded several grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board for his revival of regional folk music. Randy?s versatile musicianship has been described by critic Alex Monaghan (Folk World) as ?driving, percussive, lyrical, gentle, dominant by turns.? As a duo, they mix a passion for northwoods history and folklore with their finely honed approach to song-arrangement to bring old music to life. They have performed at the University of Chicago Folk Festival, Milwaukee Irish Fest and over 100 venues across the Great Lakes region. Their second album, The Lonesome Hours of Winter, came out earlier this year. See ANAM next page

The Irish soul flourishes in the pure celebration of storytelling in all its forms, music, theater, language, art and the written word. From the quiet magic of John Ford and Maureen O'Hara to the explosive phenomenon of Riverdance, Los Angeles has continued to welcome the rich contributions of the Irish. The View from Ireland By M au r ice Fit zpat r ick For Oct ober : Ir elan d, St u ck
Bet w een t h e UK & US The UK?s strategic response to the deepening uncertainty over its future relationship with the European Union has been to consolidate its relationship with the US. Members of the UK?s cabinet have beaten a path to Washington DC, and celebrated as best they can whatever flicker of positivity they glean from their meetings in the US capital. From Ireland?s perspective, the UK?s scramble for diplomatic victories in the US raises a disturbing spectre from the past, and complicates the Irish Question in Washington. Unavoidably, Ireland lies between the US and the UK in more ways than one. In February, Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney related what he told United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on a visit to Washington: ?I made it very clear to him that we?re not asking the US to take sides? Ireland over the UK or UK over Ireland? But we are asking people here to think about a peace process that they have been very much involved in creating and sustaining, and using influence to ensure that decisions that are taken in relation to Brexit don?t undermine that progress?. In not seeking the US to take sides between Ireland and the UK, Coveney is following both an official policy and unwritten code of practice that has been the basis of the Irish government?s engagement with the US since the late 1970s. One of the unique achievements of John Hume in political Washington during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s was to translate good-will towards Ireland into action at the seat of US foreign policy, the White House. The essential enabler for so doing, and for achieving the historic August 1977 Carter Statement that has been the framework for all US presidential involvement in Ireland since, was that the Executive Branch in the US could remain bipartisan vis-Ă -vis Anglo-Irish relations. That bipartisanship is now under more strain than it has been for over forty years. In a marked departure from well-meaning platitudes and a move towards a more partisan mode, the US Vice-President Mike Pence urged Taoiseach Varadkar in Dublin in early September ?to negotiate in good faith with Prime Minister Johnson and work to reach an agreement that respects the UK?s sovereignty?. Translation: from Pence?s perspective, Ireland has not negotiated in good faith with Johnson and it has disrespected the UK?s sovereignty.
The central mistake of such an analysis is that Ireland does not negotiate with the UK on Brexit at all: Ireland forms part of a coalition of 27 countries, the EU, which negotiates as a bloc. Commenting on the prospect of a no-deal Brexit, former National Security Advisor John Bolton said in London in August: ?If that?s the decision of the British government, we will support it enthusiastically?. Doubtless Boris Johnson?s cabinet will hope that that support will last longer than did Bolton himself. The Executive Branch in the US is substantially enabled in its bid to channel the UK government?s agenda by the emergent partisanship among Republicans in the US Senate. On August 1st, forty-four Republican senators co-signed a letter to Boris Johnson reaffirming their unconditional support for the UK, stating: ?irrespective of how Brexit occurs, we recommit to the NATO security alliance and the ?Five Eyes? intelligence partnership.
We also will advocate for a new bilateral trade agreement, as early as your Brexit terms would allow?. Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) spearheaded this initiative? the same senator who blocked the E3 visa for the Irish last December. It is notable that the full complement of Republicans in the US Senate (53) did not sign the letter. There may be some among them who understand the risks that arise from Brexit, particularly in its most chaotic ?no deal?form, and who can be persuaded not to allow London to jeopardise peace in Ireland under any circumstances. Moreover, the cohort of 44 senators is substantially short of the requisite 67 votes to pass a UK-US trade deal in the senate. And, irrespective of the Senate?s leaning, the deal would be killed in the House: Speaker Pelosi and Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Richie Neal, have been emphatic about that.

Page 15
FITZPATRICK VIEW Con t in u ed Besides, even if the UK did negotiate a favourable trade deal with the US, it would be a far cry from the solution to all its woes, as Johnson?s cabinet tries to portray it. The UK exports $135 billion worth of goods to the US every year, but its exports to the EU are worth far more than double that figure. Concentrating on a UK-US deal at the expense of prioritising a trade relationship with the EU are twin pillars of Boris Johnson?s foredoomed post-Brexit economic policy. The UK-US trade deal will certainly be less favourable than the one that the UK currently enjoys as part of the EU. The rhetoric to the contrary has no more substance than any other Brexiteer claim. US economic interests will inevitably lie in its relationship with the EU more than with the UK, and Brexiteers who are busy lobbying in Washington will have to learn that painful lesson sooner or later. While this unreality plays out, the emergent partisanship in Washington on the Irish Question grows, and it is sad to witness. The US has sat at the table during some of the most crucial negotiations in the troubled history between the UK and Ireland, something that constitutes one of the great successes of American foreign policy interventions. A great deal hangs on the US?s continued commitment to Anglo-Irish relations. The Irish-American base in favour of the Trump administration should be aware of the policies adopted in their name.

BELOVED, gaze in thine own heart, The holy tree is growing there; From joy the holy branches start, And all the trembling flowers they bear. The changing colours of its fruit Have dowered the stars with merry light; The surety of its hidden root Has planted quiet in the night; The shaking of its leafy head Has given the waves their melody, And made my lips and music wed, Murmuring a wizard song for thee. There the Loves a circle go, The flaming circle of our days, Gyring, spiring to and fro In those great ignorant leafy ways; Remembering all that shaken hair And how the wingèd sandals dart, Thine eyes grow full of tender care: Beloved, gaze in thine own heart. Gaze no more in the bitter glass The demons, with their subtle guile, Lift up before us when they pass, Or only gaze a little while; For there a fatal image grows That the stormy night receives, Roots half hidden under snows, Broken boughs and blackened leaves. For all things turn to barrenness In the dim glass the demons hold, The glass of outer weariness, Made when God slept in times of old. There, through the broken branches, go The ravens of unresting thought; Flying, crying, to and fro, Cruel claw and hungry throat, Or else they stand and sniff the wind, And shake their ragged wings; alas! Thy tender eyes grow all unkind: Gaze no more in the bitter glass.

Her oic Ir ish Am er ican Air m an "Right time, right place more than expected!" By Patrick Weld Not sure if this is the Luck of the Irish or being around an Irish American is just good luck but in any case this is the best human interest story that we come across for awhile!
O'Brien saw a 1-year-old baby choking, jumped into action, and saved the child?s life. O'Brien is modest about his efforts too, "We're all willing to put our life on the line to help these other countries out, and we have to think, you know, if it was our children, our families, we would want people to step up and help us in the same situation," The young hero airman added, "I want to keep doing this as long as I can or as long as my body can handle it, Hopefully I can continue to do the big missions like this and continue to help people.?
U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant Kenneth O'Brien always seems to be at the right place at the right time according to several news reports and TV coverage. He is a special ops pararescueman based in Japan. O'Brien, an Indiana native, readily admits that he likes putting himself in an active role, ?If someone needs to go do something dangerous, I volunteer, ...if someone needs a leader, I volunteer. I happened to be in the right place at the right time and that's what helped me stand out because I sought out key positions or responsibilities.? In the past year, the opportunities for heroism presented themselves and he was ready! While serving on the president's security detail during a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, he saved a civilian from a burning car. Last year, he helped lead the rescue of the Thai soccer team trapped in a flooded cave. He also saved a fellow rescuer, a Thai Navy SEAL. The latest good deed happened while he was going from Japan to the U.S. to receive a prestigious military honor!
