Those who conceived this great experiment in self government were for the most part loyal subjects of the British who primarily wanted more say in local affairs for many various reasons. Among them were a multitude of patriots of Irish birth or extraction. A lot more were Celts of every kind including primarily
Scots-Irish and Scots by either ancestry or birth. Our purpose with this feature is to single out a few of the most prominent of these brave and inspired souls and to raise a general awareness of the grand and far reaching roles that the Irish and our Celtic kin played in helping to create the most amazing and enduring Republic that has existed so far in the history of man. It seems to be one of those fascinating paradoxes of life that the more that we learn on a subject; the more aware we become of

When the British took control of New York, Mulligan remained in the city as an espionage agent, posing as a Loyalist and gathering vital information from British soldiers during their meetings in his clothing store. Mulligan?s vital communiquĂŠs included the British plan to invade Pennsylvania and a warning that British agents intended to kidnap George Washington.

In 1773, Montgomery retired to the Thirteen Colonies, married Janet Livingston, and began farming. Montgomery was born in Swords on December 2, 1738 and he was raised and educated in Ireland. In 1754, he enrolled at Trinity College, Dublin, and two years later joined the British Army to fight in the French and Indian War. He steadily rose through the ranks, serving in North America and then the Caribbean. After the war he was stationed at Fort Detroit during Pontiac's War, following which he returned to Britain for health reasons. When the American Revolutionary War broke out, Montgomery immediately joined the Rebellion in 1775. He was first elected to the and was elected to the New York Provincial Congress in May. July ~ August ? January 23, 1800) was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. His father Dr. John Rutledge left Co. Tyrone, Ireland in 1735. Rutledge would raise a son to be 39th Governor of South Carolina. Edward Rutledge and his brother John were both elected to the Continental Congress in July, 1774.
Thomas Lynch Jr. of South Carolina was a signer by happenstance; his father Thomas Lynch Sr. was unable to represent South Carolina due to illness. His grandfather Jonas Lynch was from Galway. Sadly, the young Irish Patriot and his wife were believed to have been lost at sea on a trip to the West Indies in late 1776. Their ship disappeared and there is no record of his life after.

for Independence brilliantly.
A multitude of Celtic American Patriots stood for the dream of American Independence and against the Crown. Here are just three that have made the journey from obscurity to immortality!
In November of 1775, the newly appointed COL Knox had the idea to bring captured British artillery pieces from Fort Ticonderoga, New York, to Boston. Led by Knox, the expedition, consisting of hundreds of men and 100 teams of horses and oxen, hauled fifty-six cannon and mortars all the way to Cambridge, Massachusetts, by mid-January 1776. The newly acquired guns were then moved into position atop Dorchester Heights near Boston, forcing the British garrison to evacuate Boston by mid-March. He distinguished himself again at the Battle of Trenton.
Henry Knox is one of the most fascinating heroes in American History in many respects. Knox is the ultimate embodiment of the grit, Yankee ingenuity, self motivation and leadership that laid the foundation of the American CAN DO spirit. Knox was born in Boston in 1750 to an Irish Scottish family. His father, a ship-builder died when Knox was only 14 and to help his mother and his 9 siblings survive he apprenticed himself to a Boston Bookseller.
In 1796, Knox and his wife retired to Montpelier; he stayed active, created many jobs, helped fund the construction of a church, and established a local militia. Major General Henry Knox died there on October 25, 1806.
"I have not yet begun to fight!" is one of the best known quotes of the American Revolution. It was uttered as a grand gesture of defiance during one of the best known naval battles in American History by Scottish born John Paul Jones. John Paul was one of the most forceful, inspiring and venerated figures in American History. I have always had a deep fascination for him because we share a birthday, he was born on July 6, 1747. .

when the capture of the Margaretta took place on June 12, 1775. Under the command of Jeremiah O?Brien, his brothers and the crew of his small sloop with the help of thirty-one townsmen armed with guns, swords, axes, and pitch forks captured the much larger and better armed British ship after an hour-long battle. The battle ensued at the entrance to the harbor at Machias (a town then in Massachusetts, now in Maine) because the Margaretta had threatened to bombard the town. This engagement is often considered to have been the the first naval battle of the American Revolutionary War. It was the first time British colors were struck to those of the United States, even though the Continental Navy did not exist at the time. The United States Merchant Marine claims Unity as its member and this incident as their beginning. In any case, O'Brien continued as the captain of Unity, renamed Machias Liberty, for two years. He then received the first captain's commission in the Massachusetts State Navy in 1775. The other salient fact about this battle is that it took place Five days before the Battle of Bunker Hill!

Ir ish M u sic Nigh t s Wit h Ow en Dar a Set For Pasaden a Every Tuesday night, Owen Dara takes a break from his life as a filmmaker to perform Irish songs at the 1881 Club, a welcoming local bar, in Pasadena. Having grown up listening to Irish songs in his native Cork, and then starting his entertainment career as a busker in his early twenties, Owen has developed a large repertoire of Irish songs. Although he has also had a career as a stand-up comedian and filmmaker, his love of music is present in everything he does. He has written comedic songs for his stand-up act and composed all the songs for the soundtracks of his two feature films: ?The Holy Fail? and ?Choosing Signs? (?Choosing Signs? is set to be released digitally in August, and ?The Holy Fail? has just begun to appear on the US festival circuit). While Owen has had success in a number of areas in the entertainment industry, his greatest joy is singing his favorite songs from Ireland, and he is delighted to have an opportunity to do so at the 1881 in Pasadena. ?It?s wonderful to have people sing along to the songs they know, and it?s also a thrill to be able to share songs that are hundreds of years old with people who are hearing them for the very first time,? Owen says. This, for Owen, has become the experience at his Tuesday night residency. could have mustered? the IRA, withi ts hard line spanning three decades, could only have dreamed of putting the union under such strain. Now that hardline unionism is finally seeing the risk it has taken through its endorsement of Brexit, it is expeditiously removing its head from the lion?s mouth.
Meanwhile, the Irish government has mounted a version of the Marshall Plan: Ian Marshall, that is. Ian Marshall, a Unionist from Northern Ireland, has been recruited into the Seanad (Irish Senate) as Leo Varadkar ?s appointee. Marshall had this to say about his agenda: ?It is critical that we ensure trade is as seamless and frictionless as it has been for the past 20 years? I can remember the pre-1998 phase when we had border checks with stops at the Border. I am very concerned we will be back to an element of that?. Despite his stance against a return to the past, Marshall also maintains that he would vote against ?the backstop?(essentially an Irish government veto on a hard border). Even so, if it came to it, Marshall?s Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, would not halt proceedings. for July on the inter-related topics. The DUP-Tory government is finally emerging from a phase of phoney assumptions that they can at once exit the EU and its customs union and yet avoid a trade barrier running down the Irish Sea, separating Northern Ireland and Britain. This acknowledgement, happening now in May 2018, makes the Tory-DUP government look dreadfully amateurish. The deputy leader of the DUP, Nigel Dodds, described this outcome as ?the worst of all worlds?, and he is right. Brexiteers are now seeing that they have thrown their dice and won nothing; worse, this comes with a stinging realisation that at the gaming table one can also lose very badly. That the DUP was a piston in the engine of the Brexit vote in June 2016 is surely one of the great ironies of recent Irish and British politics. Embodying as it does hardline unionism, the DUP did more to jeopardise the unionist constitutional position than anything Irish nationalism
expressed by Sinn FĂŠin over Marhall?s appointment.Marshall?s presence in the Seanad cleverly establishes common ground between Fine Gael and Sinn FĂŠin that helps to neutralise other tensions that traditionally have
Much in Northern politics is unsettled because the character of Brexit remains so unknown. The bid on the part of the British people to exit the EU is greatly hindered by the failure of Brexiteers to embrace what they claim to want. This was spectacularly evidenced on the morning after the vote in June 2016 when the proponents of the motion looked ashen-faced and made pathetic resignation speeches. Victory never tasted so bitter. Political leaders who advocated Brexit did so on the basis of a farrago of deceit which evidently they did not themselves believe. A sincere campaign would have explained the cost (in all senses of the word) of Brexit. Slow learners in the British political elite are starting to see this. And it is a bit late now.

The View From Ireland: Bordering on Meltdown Maurice Fitzpatrick, July 2018 If the Irish border could speak for itself, what would it say? Would it start with a preamble along the lines that it is sorry for all the problems it has caused? It might add that it never meant to do any harm and hoped that when it inserted itself in Ireland (then just emerging from an acrimonious civil war) it could do some good? It would certainly mount the defence that it was sent by England. There has been enough misunderstanding about the border without any further speculation whichwould be misinterpreted and used against it. Fortunately, a Banksy style anonymous Twitter account, @BorderIrish, has in fact given voice to the Irish border in which the border becomes clear as day.

incorporated it into his Brexit policy. But the latest news is that Davis is apparently considering resigning from his post. So we may not have a wide border after all? The EU heads of government will meet as part of the European Council at the end of June to discuss Brexit. In advance of the summit, the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, on June 2nd demanded that the British government produce a written description of its plan for Brexit, and for the Irish border: ?In the next two weeks, we need to see written proposals. It needs to happen two weeks from the summit?. That this demand emanated from Dublin was unfortunate as it was always more likely to stoke the ire of the British than to achieve its objectives: it feeds into an absurd perspective that Dublin?s policies in relation to Brexit are purely oppourtunistic.
Sure enough, Britain?s Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, seemed to see it that way. In leaked remarks, Johnson had this to say to his Prime Minister, Theresa May, about the Irish border on June 6th: ?It?s so small and there are so few firms that actually use that border regularly, it?s just beyond belief that we?re allowing the tail to wag the dog in Taking the trouble to set up and maintain a Twitter this way? We?re allowing the whole of our agenda to be account on Brexit?s impact on the border may well dictated by this folly? The border, as presented in @BorderIrish, sounds a good deal smarter than some of the politicians who have pronounced on it, and who are now rudderless in obstreperous waters. This showed above all when the minister ?in charge?of the UK exiting the European Union came up with a whooper of a solution to all our problems in late May: David Davis does not want to move the border, nor does he want to remove the border; he wants to widen it. His vision is a form of a demilitarised zone between Ireland, North and South: a ten mile ?border zone?. Someone needs to inform Davis where the border lies in Ireland? in parts there is hardly a few miles between the border and the Atlantic Ocean or the Irish Sea. Widening it would involve a form of land reclaim that has not happened since the construction of the great dikes of Holland began in 1000 AD. It is time that Davis got that pencil off his ear and started to sketch out plans. Doubtless Davis has tho ught this through already and has
They remain gung-ho for Brexit. As a United Irelander might say to a diehard Unionist: if your destination is Northern Ireland within the UK, I wouldn?t start here.

Gr ego r y B r en d an Pat r i ck Southern California is home to many artists, musicians and writers of all persuasions and pursuits; one of them, poet and writer, Greg Patrick stands out from the pack. Born in the west of Ireland, Patrick now reside part time in Orange County. His heritage is as intriguing as the prose he has crafted. His life experience working as a horse trainer enables him to see life through a lens of appreciation and love of all creatures and nature. It is but one of the traits that have helped him become this adventuresome, determined, humble and quiet looming Irish literary figure. Our first meeting with him was at an Irish Fair a few years ago; it was then that we learned of his great love of Irish Music and Culture. Since then over the years of conversation; his deep connection and love for Derry, his steady output of work, his adventures (shark swimming for example) and travels have all come to light as he became a frequent and popular contributor to the I rish Arts and Entertainment.

M ORE REVOLUTIONARY FACTS: Cont. from page 7 John Paul Jones may well be the most rebellious of any of the heroes of the War for American Independence. A big clue is his name; John Paul added JONES to his name when he arrived in Virginia to evade Maritime Authorities who were looking for him! He made many powerful friends in his life but also more than a few enemies! The largest navel battle and the one that gave him fame that was just off the Irish coast at Carrickfergus in the North Sea. When Jones failed to be given another command by the dithering American Congress; he moved on and became a Rear Admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy! His squabbles continued and he moved on fiarly quickly but he had served the Russians well enough to earn a pension for his service. He was living in Paris and was just about to be given a diplomatic task with the fnew American government when he died at the age of 49.

Jer p o i n t A b b ey The Ruins of Ireland are an intriguing part of the landscape in almost every part of the island. The reasons for the majority of them including one of the most famous, Jerpoint Abbey, located in County Kilkenny is the same. The destruction of most of the abbeys, monasteries and schools in Ireland was ordered by England's King Henry VIII during the years following his split with the Roman Catholic Church in the early 1500s. It was a move on the church caused primarily be greed, the books, gold and lands controlled by them was coveted by Henry and he was brutal in changing the status quo of his time.
