The Confluence Of Gaels, God and Revolution
The Pivotal Role of the Ir ish In The Am er ican War Of Independence
The hand of Providence was at work during theyears that first led up to and then guided thevictory of theAmerican Colonies over the seemingly invincibleBritish Empire. Most of the Founders and themajority of the populaceof theColonies in the late 1700s believed that in their hearts and souls.
A sizable portion of thepopulation of theThirteen Colonies who were of Irish birth and Irish or Celtic Ancestry were totally certain that it was ordained by God that they should be part of the Rising Against thecruel and greedy British Crown.
A distinguished Circle of George Washington's most able and trusted advisers and officers were Gaels. They included Revolutionary War heroes; Commodore John Paul Jones, born in Scotland, Major General Richard Montgomery and Commodore John Barry from Ireland and General Henry Knox who was born to Scots-Irish parents. Knox was Washington's chief artillery officer and a trusted advisor.
There were countless others including an Irish born New York tailor, Hercules Mulligan who was a spy for GeorgeWashington,
As onemight imagine, theinspiration and motivation to fight for thecauseof freedom varied with everyonebut the Irish in general were moreactive, eloquent and involved in the American Revolution than theaverage Colonial. After a shared history of hundreds of years of harsh treatment, occupation and taxation of theBritish Empire; theGaels were ready for thefight! In this issue, weare also exploring thelasting and living Irish contribution to our culture and music during the Revolution. Derek Warield, a renowned Irish musician and founder of the Young WolfeTones, delved into thehistorical connection between Ireland and theAmerican Revolutionary War with his album " Washington's Irish " This album features a collection of songs and ballads that highlight the significant contributions of Irish soldiers and immigrants to the fight for American independence Continuedon page6

Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones, WASHINGTON'S IRISH
Warfield's research into this period unearthed stories of Irish figures like General Henry Knox, Commodore John Barry, and Captain Molly Pitcher, who played crucial roles in therevolution
The album includes songs like " The Foggy Dew," which commemorates the Irish Easter Rising but also resonates with the themes of rebellion and freedom in the American context
While the album as a wholeis a tribute to theIrish in the American Revolution, someof themost popular songs include " The Foggy Dew" :A powerful ballad commemorating theIrish Easter Rising, its themes of rebellion and freedom resonate with
theAmerican Revolutionary War
" Captain Molly (TheBallad of Molly Pitcher)" :This song celebrates the legendary Irish-American heroine Molly Pitcher, who bravely took her husband's place loading cannons during theBattle of Monmouth " Yankee Doodle/TheThreeLittle Drummers" : This medley combines theiconic American tune " YankeeDoodle" with the Irish song " The ThreeLittle Drummers," symbolizing theunity between the two nations
DEREK WARFIELD (Center Left) & The YoungWolfe Tones'"Washington'sIrish" is not only a musical endeavor but also a historical project that sheds light on the often-overlooked contributions of the Irish to American history Warfield's passion for both music and history shines through in this album, making it a valuable resource for those interested in the Irish-American connection during the Revolutionary War period

Dublin to Galway By Train
By Patrick Weld
Aquick preface: This travel story isa few weekslonger in the making than we first envisioned. Since it wasplanned I started a job in London and had to cut my first trip to Galway short and start to work Jim McDonough, our publisher wasgood about it and we were able to work out a new schedule This will be my last last travel or otherwise story for a bit as my new London job has already changed and we are now doing 100%of our job in the area with the highest concentration of tech jobsin London. iscalled Silicon Roundabout It is located in the Shoreditch area of East London
I have really enjoyed my time with the Irish Arts and Entertainment and learned a lot. No door isclosed but the workload isa lot now and the daysof remote and roaming are over at least for now.
Dublin is an amazing city and I really enjoyed writing about it and doing the Hikesand Bikes seriesfor the Irish Arts and Entertainment The sightsand people all over Ireland are the best My accent opened up a lot of conversations and doorstoo Being from Australia, I got a lot of good laughs from using a line I learned from my uncle, "Thank God, my ancestorswere criminalsThe Irish liked it better than the Americans, they seem to know our history a bit better!
The Scenic Route to Galway
We found out that there are two waysby train to Galway and opted for the half hour or so longer ride through

Limerick. The scenic route isthe way to go as the tracks follow the Shannon River We also passed Tullamore in County Offaly, best known for itsTullamore DEW whiskey distillery. One of the reasons that I am keen on returning to Ireland isto take the tour of the distillery and learn more about the history of Irish whiskey
The trip to Galway which ison the west coast of Ireland went by all too quickly. Galway isa popular tourist destination and isprobably best known for itslively atmosphere, its traditional Irish music scene, and all the pubs Eyre Square wasfine too and the awesome Cathedral there is a one of a kind edifice It wasdedicated in 1965 (started in 1958) which makesit the newest giant stone Church in Europe.
Our plan all along wasto get the first Dublin to Galway train so we would have almost a full day in Galway. Aswe mentioned in the March prequel to this feature, we were planning on only three nights
At any rate, we start there We first checked in to our central Galway Hostel. We had booked it in advance so we could stow our backpackswhen we checked out the sights
Kinlay Host el Eyre Square
I can highly recommend this place. I stayed there on both tripsto Galway, altering my original plan. The cost was around 60 Eurosper night and breakfast wasincluded The location made the difference. My hostel daysare probably over but this isa good choice if you are under 30 and on a budget

Irish born Brigadier General Richard Montgomery
General Montgomery was an officer in theContinental Army who had first served honorably in the British Army Montgomery was born in County Donegal around 1737 and he was raised and educated in Ireland In 1754, he enrolled at Trinity College, Dublin, and two years later (August, 1738) enlisted in theBritish Army and was sent to serve in Nova Scotia soon after He steadily rosethrough theranks, serving in Colonial North America and then the Caribbean He was then stationed at theBritish outpost, Fort Detroit and then New York Unhappy because of lack of promotion, he went back to England In 1772, he left theBritish Army and then went to back to theAmerican Colony of New York There, in 1773, he married Janet Livingston who was from a prominent Colonial Family and they started farming
When the American Revolutionary War broke out, Montgomery immediately joined theRebellion! In May, 1775, he was elected as a delegate to theNew York Provincial Congress Events were moving quickly and by June of 1775, hehad been commissioned as a Brigadier General in the newly formed Continental Army
Early War strategy called for an invasion of Canada primarily to get supplies and to guard against an invasion from thenorth by theBritish After the controversial (some say incompetent) Gen Philip Schuyler became too ill to lead the invasion; Montgomery took over thecommand He captured Fort St Johns and then Montreal (then a Fort) in November 1775, and then advanced thebetter fortified garrison city of Quebec Another forceunder thecommand of the (later infamous) General Benedict Arnold was to join Montgomery's contingent in theattack
Despite the seemingly good start for the invasion of Canada; the campaign faltered and then turned into a major setback for the Americans On December 31, 1775, while attacking theWall of theFortress Quebec, Montgomery was killed in action Hehad served honorably in theBritish Army so after find and identifying his body on thebattlefield, theBritish buried him with respect His body was returned to the US in 1818 and buried with honors in New York City

Observations,
Facts and AI Input On the American Quest for Freedom ad the Founding of the Republic!
One overlooked fact that stood out when researching this piece, there were Irish individualsand groups on both sides of the American War for Independence For example; the British Army Many Irishmen served in the British Army, as Ireland waspart of the British Empire at that time Some regimentswere predominantly Irish, though not officially designated assuch
The same is true for the Continental Army, many thousands

of Irish immigrants and Irish-Americansfought for the Patriot cause in various regiments and units There wasn't an official "Irish Brigade" like in the Civil War, but their presence wasnotable
"Washington'sIrish" This term refersto the Irish soldiers who served under George Washington in the Continental Army especially among the Officersand ihis close staff. It highlightstheir contribution and loyalty to the American cause
Irish Support for the Revolution
Individuals: Many Irish immigrantssympathized with the American cause due to shared grievances against British rule. Some prominent figures like John Barry (founder of the USNavy) and Hercules Mulligan (spy) played significant roles.

Irish Music:
- Colonial Bands: While there'sno definitive record of specific tunes,it'slikely that Irish melodieswere played by colonial bandsand fifers, asIrish music was already part of the cultural landscape.
- Troop Songs: Irish soldiershave historically sung traditional songs to boost morale and maintain a sense of cultural identity.
Deliberate Cover-up: Some have alleged that there was anti-Irish prejudice from a Protestant Ruling Class: There's no strong evidence of a deliberate cover-up by the Protestant ruling class While sectarian tensionsexisted, acknowledging the contributionsof Irish soldiers wouldn't have served any particular political purpose
- Historical Records: The records of Irish participation in the Revolution may not be asextensive as other groups, but this could be due to the general lack of documentation of the era rather than a deliberate attempt to erase their role :
- Irish Diaspora: It's important to note that the Irish diaspora waswidespread, and many Irish soldiers were not necessarily driven by nationalist sentimentsbut rather personal reasonsor opportunities.
- Complex Motivations: The motivationsof Irish individualsand groups were complex and varied, ranging from economic factors to political ideals

The Irish Arts & Entertainment's CELTIC CAMERA
Celtic Artist Steve O'Loughlan has a gift for making LA Freeways a work of art. He has also painted murals and Utility Boxes!. Now the Peterson Automotive Museum is putting one of his finest pieces on Exhibit.
Steve let us know recently, how this show came to be!
" I was contacted by Bryan Stevens from the Petersen Automotive Museum about creating a utility box art for the museum. Bryan had seen my public art utility box near LAX that featured a Celtic knot work freeway design of mine. Inspired by the Los Angeles car culture I created a Celtic pattern with cars on an interlacing road pattern. Initially I did thispiece for a beautification project in my neighborhood. Bryan at the Petersen had an upcoming show on automotive areand thought my utility box would be a great addition. So, they commissioned me to paint a new version of this design on a utility box. Utility boxes can befound at every road intersection with a stop light. Thebox contains the electrical equipment that run the stop lights and keep traffic rolling.
The Petersen purchased a utility box from the city and had it delivered to my studio. I started updating the design and added many more details. Refining the knot pattern and adding an arial view of Los Angeles in the background. Once the road design was complete, I started adding over 260 vehicles driving both directions. There are dozens of specialty cars and trucks from movies, tv, and service vehicles. Many of them from the Petersen?s collection. It is a fun game to walk around the piece and pick out cars you would recognize like the Batmobile, the Trans AM from Smokey and the Bandit, the DeLorean from Back to the future, and many more. The twisted tangled road reminds us of the way traffic can tie us in knots. It is one continuous road ribbon that travels around the entire art piece. All set on top a beautiful blue and gold Southern California sky.
The knot pattern may look like spaghetti, but it comes from Celtic art. For over thirty years I have been combining Celtic art with contemporary imagery. I first created this pattern to express my experience on the LA freeways by combining it with the rhythms found in this ancient art style. The interlace pattern can have several meanings. It can besymbolic of the road of life we travel on, knots that bind together all things, or just decorative and pretty. For me the patterns reflect the timeless patterns of nature and the universe. By abstracting the road into this pattern, it conforms to the great rhythms of theuniverse. Making thenatural cycles more evident to the viewer even when it is cloaked in modern trapping. Having this painted on a traffic utility box further integrates the function of the box, [controlling the stop light to keep traffic moving] and giving an elegant flow to the endless movement of vehicle all around us."
