for adults at St. Ambrose Parish Hall in West Hollywood. The adult groups were aptly known as The St. Ambrose Ceili Dancers and grew to be one of the best-known Irish Dance groups in Southern California winning numerous awards and competitions. In 1993, Cleary added classes for children. Classes are now offered for students of all ages and levels. They study the traditional art form of Irish dance (reels, jigs and hornpipes) in both soft and hard shoes. They perform regularly at events throughout the Southland and have appeared many times on local and national television as well as Irish TV (RTE). They have featured in the Disney video “Doing the Jig with Tig”. Members of the group have performed with the Chieftains, the Irish Rovers and Cherish the Ladies to name but a few of the many groups with whom they have worked. In addition, under the direction of Cleary and Katie Dean, the Cleary School has undertaken numerous choreography assignments for TV, film and commercials and has worked
very closely with the Disney Corporation on various projects. Cleary’s daughter, Katie Dean, a graduate of the University of Rochester, New York works with her. Dean was also a champion dancer and she now teaches as a qualified TCRG. Cleary Irish Dance is truly a family run business and all dancers are welcomed as members of The Cleary Irish Dance family. Cleary Irish Dance is proud to represent the traditions and culture of Ireland in Los Anges. About Margaret Cleary, Directory, Cleary Irish Dance
Margaret Cleary was born in London of Irish parents (Tipperary and Kerry), the eldest of five girls, all champion dancers.
She commenced dancing at the age of 8, and during her competitive years won countless solo championships, including All-England title and All-Ireland awards. She was a member of the Kavanagh senior figure dance team that were World Champions three consecutive years. Margaret attained her teaching

Her focus on Irish Dance has made her a legend in many Irish circles In addition to teaching both adults and children’s classes; Cleary is in constant demand to adjudicate Irish dance competitions throughout North America and Ireland. She has judged National events in the US as well as overseas including the World Championships in Ireland. The View Ireland Yeats' Shade By Maurice Fitzpatrick
f
has just finished celebrating his 150th birthday. In the case of most of us, death has a pesky way of interfering with the onward march of our social calendar. The celebrants of Yeats' sesquicentennial birthday, however, are quite unperturbed by the fact that the birthday boy is no longer with us. Between public readings, Georgian houses in Dublin enlivened with Yeatsian spirits and seances, academic conferences and studies, Yeats' 150th has been a hooley all round. This blowout may risk the charge of being crass and ex-
ploitative, but not a bit of it. For Yeats, death itself was simply a man-made construct that any art worthy of the name could outface. Yeats also claimed that death was an inexhaustible fount of inspiration for good poetry: “sex and death are the only things that can interest a serious mind.” Such high-mindedness forced a wedge between he and some of the Irish reading public. In re-

sponse to this, Yeats, more than any other writer, was responsible for the creation of a vision of Ireland that bore scant relationship to the country where peasant farmers struggled under the imperial and clerical kosh. He was explicit about his view
of Ireland's proper identity: “A Druid land, a Druid tune.” He wanted to create an audience for it too, his vehicle being the Abbey Theatre, the new national theatre of an emergent nation forged partly to reflect his view of what Ireland truly should be. All the blather about fairies and a whimsical, poetical peasantry would be difficult to bear were it not for Yeats' visionary brilliance in imagining the land anew: Imagining a man, And his sun-freckled face And grey Connemara cloth (The Fisherman). Yeats' vision of Ireland became enmeshed in the particularly troubled politics of the republic. His lines on the Easter 1916 Uprising, in response to the action of rebels who seized

a handful of significant buildings in central Dublin including the General Post Office and proclaimed the republic, will be quoted ad nauseam next year during the centenary; Yeats' marrying of ancient Celtic myth with radical, revolutionary politics in his later verse will be less discussed and less understood: When Pearse summoned Cuchulain to his side. What stalked through the Post Office? (The Statues) In his later years, the civicminded Yeats became, in the words of one of his biographers, Brenda Maddox, 'a virtuoso of the committee table', and he got appointed to the Senate. FLATFOOT 56
A new band this year for Get Shamrocked, these Celtic Punk Rockers were formed in Chicago in 2000. According to them they play a “”positive-na-
tured brand of hardcore-tinged Celtic punk”! These guys, all Chicago natives achieved nationwide attention with their first two label-backed records, 2006’s Knuckles Up and 2007’s Jungle of the Midwest Sea. These releases built on a heavy dose of previously established regional notoriety, helping the band gain steam early on. In 2010, their third album’s Black Thorn truly helped them break into the Celtic Punk Spotlight with great sales and attention on the coveted Billboard Charts. A fourth album TOIL garnered still more new fans and put them in the company of some of the best Celtic bands of any persuasion and time. It also showed Flatfoot 56’s ability to craft outstanding lyrics and good music way beyond the reach of most of the slush offered up as punk. Flatfoot 56 consists of front-
man Tobin Bawinkel (vocals/guitar), brothers Justin (drums) and Kyle (bass), along with Eric McMahon (bagpipes/ guitar) and Brandon Good (mandolin/guitar).
GAELIC STORM
Another great band appearing for the first time at Get Shamrocked to the delight of their SoCal fans also started in Santa Monica some 20 years back! Matching Sweaters is the title of Gaelic Storm’s latest and Tenth CD. Not sure if it is a nod to the Clancy Brothers or the High Kings or if they just like sweaters but it doesn’t matter as it is
terrific and one of their best! This crew is as imaginative and as prolific as any World Music group around today! They have been on the Billboard Charts more than any other Irish Band! They work hard, play a lot of dates and although quite down to earth and personable to their fans; they obviously enjoy the well-deserved adulation that is heaped upon them. We were lucky enough to see this band back in the day in Santa Monica and they have always put on a rollicking show, always chatted up the audience and best of all always given the impression that they were happy to be there. Gaelic Storm are great entertainers well as gifted musicians and songwriters. You can see them on Saturday at Get Shamrocked in Murrieta. Gael Storm are founding memContinued to page 11

Another amazing Punk Irish Group takes to the Get Shamrocked Stage in September proudly trailing the dust of the 30 plus countries that they have performed in. Like the Dubs and Gaelic Storm, this band started 20 plus years ago plying their trade in pubs. The Mahones were formed by Finny McConnell on St. Patrick’s Day in 1990, and have been working on their own brand of Irish punk ever since. Other band members are: Dom “The Bomb” Whelan, Katie Kaboom, Sean Winter, Sean “Riot” Ryan and a rotating lineup of fantastic musicians. They have won worldwide acclaim since their humble start! Some of the Awards include: *2014 Winner for Best Celtic Punk Album Punk.ie (The Hunger & The Fight)* *2013 Sirius XM

The Mahones are proud to have a long list of TV (Lost Girl, Castle, Killjoys) and movie appearances (The Fighter, Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy, Celtic Pride, Dog Park) from their growing repertoire of Irish punk classics. area and are well known and popular on the Pub and Festival circuit in SoCal. “The five-piece band is fronted by Eric Ree, who has the ability to engage the crowd with his powerful voice, solid guitar playing and quirky sense of humor. Dueling instrumentalists, Frank LaBlanc on Mandolin and Robert Keysers on fiddle, bend the boundaries of traditional tunes by adding their own influences and style to the music. Bass player James Kee and drummer Tod Warren make up the powerful rhythm section and pulse of the band. The five distinct elements make up a band that is developing their own rules for what constitutes an Irish band and creating a sound that is truly their own. The band has developed a fan base that is dedicated to the idea that the way the American Wake plays Irish music is the way Irish music should be played. CRAIC HAUS
Another band that technically got it’s start in Santa Monica where they played their first show opening for the Bay City Rollers in December of 2004. A trio consisting of father and son and friend: they really hail from Clairmont, CA. CRAiC HAUS according to their official bio was formed in 2005 and consist of Danny Oberbeck (from the original LOST CAUSE) on drums, mandolin, penny whistle and lead vocals, Dylan Blue
(Danny’s son) on guitar, mandolin and backing vocals and Dylan’s high school friend Julian Johnson (from Jonny Come Lately) on King Double bass and accordion. They are the true pioneers of SHAMROCKABILLY and this grand mix of Irish and American roots music has served them and the their music loving fans quite well for over 10 years now. Another group that works and plays hard, they have travelled and toured extensively and have several very good albums to their credit. Another distinction, they will be the only band at Get Shamrocked that invented a genre; “Shamrock A Billy”! Our readers are sure to enjoy this fusion of Irish/Celtic/ Country and Bluegrass, be sure to catch their shows as they put on a highly versatile and entertaining performance every time! www.craichaus.com Continued to page 17

“My artwork combines Celtic designs and other decorative motifs with contemporary imagery. I often draw upon my local community for inspiration. Therefore, freeways, Latin culture, jet airliners and social themes interlace together in a swirling celebration of color and rhythm.” Steve O’Loughlin (shown on right) the artist and attendee for the Art Show opening at The Wilde Thistle, pose with Ed Ferrer and his sister Lupe Pinzon.

he works of acclaimed Irish-American Artist Steve O’Loughlin are currently on display at the Wilde Thistle located in the Palms District of Los Angeles; the public is invited to drop by anytime to see and enjoy this visually stunning collection of Celtic Art. Open for less than two years. The Wilde Thistle is a family run business, the brainchild of Caity Wallace who has had considerable experience in running a tea room and shop. It is a nice cozy place with great food and ambiance and well worth a visit on it’s own merits. Aside from hosting Art Shows, the cafe & pub has a very good schedule of entertainment and events each month. O’Loughlin moved to LA after getting a formidable education in the arts with a BFA from the California College of Art and a Masters from the San Francisco Art Institute. He now resides in Westchester with his wife, Lynda and their two children, Haley 19 and Neil, 14. O’Loughlin is an amiable and intelligent guy who has won acclaim as a multi-faceted artist: painter, sculptor and musician. His latest works have been in the realm of public art and he is now working on sacred art for Holy Nativity Church in Westchester. The art on display by O’Loughlin is very contemporary Celtic inspired with an imaginative whimsy that is unmatched by any other artist. About it O’Loughlin explains...

Bogside Artists Restoration Project Moving Forward in Ireland “What you didn’t know about The Bogside Artists and were afraid to ask”
R
ecently completed is the Hunger Strike Mural of The Bogside Artists, a pivotal mural in their People’s Gallery of murals situated in The Bogside Area of Derry, Northern Ireland. The mural depicts Peggy O’Hara mother of Patsy O’Hara and Margaret McCauley sister of Michael Devine. Peggy O’Hara died recently.
Mrs. McCauley died in 2005. Both Patsy and Michael are depicted in the mural. Michael James "Mickey" Devine (26 May, 1954–20 August, 1981) was a founding member of the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA). He died in prison during the 1981 Irish hunger strike.

This mural shows a little girl who is a symbol of the new generation and, above all a symbol of innocence, the central theme of the mural. Please visit our facebook page to learn more about The Bogside Artists. Patsy O'Hara (11 July 1957 – 21 May 1981[1]) was also a member of the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA) who also died on hunger strike. They were both from Derry. The Bogside artists have been restoring their twelve murals for some months thanks to funding from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, that being the only body willing to support them. At home they are marginalized and discriminated against by the ruling Sinn Fein party. This is largely because the work of the three men is art first and foremost and, as their spokesman explains… “as far removed from propaganda as we can get. Therefore not to the liking of the incumbent die-hard Republicans who have been voted into office. What we tried to do was universalize what would otherwise be seen as a merely parochial conflict. Our understanding was that what we experienced was not confined to Derry or Northern Ireland but could be found elsewhere in the world from Sarajevo to Palestine. A fact all the more true when one considers that the Civil Rights Movement of the late sixties in Northern Ireland had been inspired by Martin Luther King’s heroic march for civil rights for Negroes in America. This was our unique vision. Art is not about the parochial but about the universal. This is the nature of the language of art. The parochial is still present in it but is transcended by its semantic, universal reach… or does anyone suppose that a toothache in Syria is a different phenomenon from a toothache in New York? Our work is recognized as art of the highest standard by many intelligent people around the world. The Bogside Artists do not fly the flag for Sinn Fein or any other political party. We do not paint propaganda. We leave that to the well-funded and lavishly marketed muralists of Belfast. We are independent and will remain so taking the view that the artist has sold his birthright if he devotes his skill to creating propaganda, or mind persuasion, on behalf of an elite. ”

Continued from page 8 still clung to his Senate speeches, it nevertheless stands as a noble record that he defended the Protestant minority in the South, and spoke in favour of the right to divorce—civilising and modernising issues that rattled the complacency of the newly-founded Dublin government. Yeats became a spokesman on artistic and moral issues—the excitable young poet's elevation to the status of a “smiling public man” would seem to have been complete in his later life? Not in the poetry, and the poetry attests to the power of his imagination to withstand, and to stand aloof from, the flurry of his other mundane concerns. The catalogue of Yeats' sillinesses and snobberies is as long as it is offensive. His reputation in Ireland suffers to this day for his unfair judgements of Irish people and for his poses; his flirtation with fascism does

him no favours either. Yet there is still the poetry. W. H. Auden said this well in his wonderful elegy for Yeats: “You were silly like us; your gift survived it all.” A censure and a pardon in one breath. And what was the spur that honed his gift? Yeats, at the age of 23, fell for a fiery woman, a prominent revolutionary, named Maude Gonne who would not have him. After a series of proposals, pining verse and attempts to woo her, he finally relented a little and went to work on Gonne's daughter— who wouldn't have him either. Meanwhile, he had turned fifty

and started a family with an ever accommodating English woman named Georgie Hyde Lees who very soon understood the disposition of the man she lived with (“he would cut the wings of an angel to write a good poem”). She realised too that their marriage of convenience would not stop Yeats' wandering eye, so she oversaw his monkey gland surgery (Steinach operation) to rejuvenate Yeats sexually and arranged meetings for him with his girlfriends in London. And he continued to rave about Maude Gonne—even on his death bed, he was still writing love poems for Gonne. Very good ones too. That is the point about Yeats. While silliness permeates his work, it never overwhelms it. Every Irish person who has found his disdain for Irish people problematic, might nevertheless address themselves to the corpus of work he created and acknowledge the magnificent achievement that it constitutes. He was certainly one of the greatest poets of the century and his unceasing energy to create
the possibility of a new beginning was hugely important to Ireland during its transition to independence. For all his crazy notions and undignified love pursuits, thankfully there still is the poetry. At 150, Yeats has long outstripped the standard Irish language platitude—go maire tú an céad/ that you may live to be a hundred. Bring on another 150 birthdays and his work will still be read.
