Go Gaelic in LA!

Gaelic League Expanding Outreach in SoCal

ost Americans and even many IrishM Americans are not aware of the fact that Ireland has its own language that is

completely different than English; or that people still speak that language you heard from the Highlanders in Outlander? Or that Manx, the language of the Isle of Man (where the cats have no tails) is growing in popularity? It’s all true. Now if you want to learn some Gaeilge, Gàidhlig, or Gaelg (Irish, Scottish, or Manx) right here in LA? You can do that! Whether you are interested in the languages or in the cultures, there’s a class probably not far from you here in sunny Southern California to help you have fun going Gaelic. You are welcome to join in anytime.

So, who does this?

Gaelic League LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Gaelic (Irish, Scottish, and Manx) languages and cultures. In Irish it is known as Conradh na Gaeilge (sounds like kunra na gale-ga). The organization was founded in 1893 in Ireland and was instrumental is the revitalization of the language and culture. Out of this revival would emerge writers such as WB Yeats and leaders who would free the country such as Pádraig Pearse. Now it’s here! The LA branch found its feet and the best of starts early in 2016 in The Wilde Thistle Café in Culver City thanks to Caity Wallace and her amazing family. Now the Gaelic League has spread its wings and found new places in which to spread Gaelic culture all across Los Angeles. This year is a special one for the Irish. It marks 100 years since the 1916 Rebellion

that led to Ireland’s independence from colonial rule. Because of that there are events or lectures on this topic each month (apart from May) to commemorate this pivotal moment in Irish history. To celebrate freedom, they are free and open to all. Free classes are available for beginners and low cost classes to members in Culver City, Pasadena, Agoura Hills, Redondo Beach, and on Wilshire Blvd. The courses and clubs include language, music, dancing, film, literature, games, and the lecture series. Language and Gaelic communities are coming together to support the work of the Gaelic League. Thirsty work? Brendan’s in Agoura Hills, The Irish Times in Culver, Griffins in Pasadena, and Hennessey’s in Redondo Beach are some of the places where you can have a pint while learning. They have welcomed Conradh na Gaeilge and its mission. You really can have fun going Gaelic in LA. If avoiding the temptations of the pint, don’t worry. Try the Wilshire Blvd location. AF International College, which is alcohol free, has opened its doors on Sundays to Conradh na Gaeilge. So whatever brings you to explore the treasure of Gaelic culture, you’ll find a warm Fáilte, Fàilte, Failt ort, Welcome. Check out their website www.gaelicla.com Or contact by email at cnaglosangeles@gmail.com for more details.

What is it With Celts and Their Fairs, Feis, Festivals and Games?

umans have several traits H deep within their DNA. One is the need to travel and

the other is the need to gather in occasional groups and party! One of the things you run into, as a Celtic storyteller, is the sense that the Celts got a double dose of this. Our desire to move and explore is well documented. From sometimes forced migrations to epic journeys and sea voyages (like St. Brendan), we Celts have a need to knock the dirt off and get some wind in our faces. And we love to organize regular get-togethers, preferably ones where music and dance, songs and stories, contests and competitions are all sparkling and flowing. And of course, it doesn’t hurt that it all gets well lubricated with a bit o’ drink. These two instincts, travelling and gathering, conflict with one another a tiny bit. From our earliest days, the Celts have been a nomadic people, big on cattle herding and moving. We are

some of the original cowboys. Back then as a nomadic people, you needed to make certain you met up with other tribes, did vital trading, met potential mates, and forged alliances and truces. Every so often, these groups would agree on a central place, usually hosted by a powerful chieftain who could keep the peace, and they would all get together. Then the fun would start. In ancient Ireland, local festivals or “feis” were very important. But every four years, the biggest of them, the Aonach, the great festival of Tara, was held by the Ardri or the High King. At these feiseanna, bards and storytellers could reach large audiences. There was horse and chariot racing, craftsmen showed their remarkable wares and, of course, warriors regaled others with tales of their exploits and competitions. These feis were so important that by Brehon law, a pawnbroker holding fine jewelry as collateral had to give it back for

the length of the event, so that the owner could wear it and not lose face. At the Aonach, the requisite competitions were held, matters decided, and deals were made. Dancers exhibited their feats of skill, martial arts demos delighted audiences, there was a riot of music played and taught, plus all sorts of celebrations and memorials. But the Aonach had very strict rules about fighting. While hurling, wrestling, and brawling was allowed, actual combat was not. And breaking the peace could result in the person being summarily judged and made nameless, homeless, and tribeless. Being cast out (an out-cast) was the worst thing that could happen to a Celt. One of the most important events in the Bardic community was “The Star of the Bards.” At this meeting, the ranking experts

held trials to see if information, stories, and poems were properly memorized. A Bard might try to level up before a panel of three or more experienced bards. If he or she succeeded, when one of those experts passed on, that Bard took their place. In this way, great epics could be passed on for hundreds of years. The hall was filled with the best and brightest of the Ollamhs (similar to doctorates), Brehons (legal experts), and Files (poets and entertainers) that Erin had to offer. Whether you call them a cèilidh, a faire, a highland game, a market day, or a hootenanny, this tradition of a gathering of the tribes and people has been with the Seven Nations of the Celts—Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Galacia, and the Isle of Man—since the Bronze Age. So go to the Irish Faire or

Highland Game. Grab a pint, toss a caber, sing a song, cut a caper, and whirl around in a whirl-a-gig. You are simply being called back to something that is in your genes, just like a salmon finding that river home. And if you get a chance, listen to some pipes, find the Seanachie (storyteller), buy him or her a pint, and share a tale or two. Because we are a legendary people. Have a great summer! True Thomas the Storyteller is a traditional spoken word storyteller specializing in Celtic and other traditional myths, legends, and folktales. He is also a ULC Minister and is available for classes on Celtic Lore, Fairy Lore, and Storytelling. And, is a Public Speaker and Consultant. Monsignor Tony McGowan Celebrated 101st Birthday on May 6 Probably the oldest Irish born priest in America is still active in giving and raising funds for Wells of Life.

ne of his nephews from Ireland arrived to celebrate that day with him O and his local friends in a low key ceremony at his residential facility where Bishop Vann presented him with a series of pictures of the borehole

water well that Monsignor McGowan financed in rural Uganda, working through a local 501(c)(3) charity called Wells Of Life, which has informally adopted Monsignor Tony as their patron and spiritual inspiration. More information is available at www.wellsoflife.org. “Fr. Tony”, as he prefers to be called, is currently living at the Del Obispo Terrace senior living facility in San Juan Capistrano located fairly close to “his favorite church”, Our Lady of Fatima in San Clemente, CA where he served as pastor between 1976 and his retirement in 1986. He isn’t really active in ministry anymore, as he doesn’t have enough confidence in his physical abilities to properly perform the sacraments, but he is a beloved figure at both his residence facility and “his church”, where he frequently attends Mass. All of the 180 of the children in the OLF school have been making him birthday cards, which they are all going to present to him at a brief ceremony in “McGowan Hall”, the parish assembly building named in his honor in 2008, in the afternoon of May 12. The founder of Wells Of Life, Mr. Nick Jordan, and the organization’s current president, Pete Callahan, presented Father Tony with a painting commemorating the second

well that he has sponsored in rural Uganda, this one dedicated to a group of Irish students who were killed a few months ago in a balcony collapse in Berkeley, California. The Honorable Finbar Hill, the Honorary Consul General of Ireland to Los Angeles, presented Father Tony with a medallion sent to him by the President of Ireland that commemorates his 101st birthday. The Diocese and particularly OLF parish will be celebrating Msgr’s Jubilee to commemorate his 75 years of priestly service at the 11 AM Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church on June 12, 2016, although the actual date of his ordination in Ireland was June 8, 1941, shortly before he like so many wonderful Irish priests left home to come to America. Fr. Tony would also want us to mention that he became a proud American citizen 10 years later, although there is still a charming lilt to his speech.

The Fenians Headline Big Irish Fair With Host of Other Irish Talent

or nearly two decades now, F The Fenians have delivered their potent mix of traditional Irish folk and good old rock n roll all across the USA and Ireland. With an ever expanding set of original creations, as well

as contemporary and traditional tunes plucked from the panoply of the genre, these five lads put on a live show that is second to none. Their foundation is decidedly Celtic, but there is no mistaking the complimentary influences of Rock, Folk, Bluegrass, Jazz, and World music. Through their music and voices, Terry Casey, Rob Williams , Brendan Harkins , Tardu Yegin , and Chris Pierce represent Everyman - sweet and sorrowful; brave and beautiful; angry and amused. Since 1990, The Fenians have garnered an impressive list of accomplishments and honors, headlining theaters and festivals

across the U.S. and Ireland, including: The House of Blues, The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas, The Milwaukee Irish Fest, Chicago Gaelic Park Irish Fest, the Dublin OH Irish Festival, Cleveland Irish Fest, as well as The Quays and Whelans, two of Ireland’s premiere live music venues, to name but a few. They are two time winners of the “Best World Music” catagory at the Orange County Music Awards, and were listed as one of the top 50 bands of the decade by the Orange County Register. In 1999, The Fenians were inducted into the Guinness Wall of Fame. Next big Fenian’s Tour THE HOOLEY IN 2017! Get info online or at the Big Irish Fair! The Fenians catalogue of six albums was bolstered by the Universal Music Group-distributed “Best of The Fenians” on Varese Sarabande Records in 2007 as well as the “Live in Concert” DVD in 2008. www.thefenians.com
