Page 3 DEAR ST. ELIZABETH PARISHIONERS: After a daily Mass last week, I stood outside (close to the door!) in the below zero weather. Lee Brecht came by and we wondered how in the world people ever went to church, back when there was no heat! We take for granted heat, air-conditioning, electricity, light and bathrooms in our churches. Even when visiting churches in other countries such a The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris or any of the churches in Rome, we don’t give heat, etc. a second thought. Put yourself in a church during Medieval times with no heat, no electricity and no lights on a day when the temperature was as cold as what we have recently endured. How did they ever do it? Of course for light, they used candles and also took light into account when building churches. They built them to take full advantage of the sun. Most of the older churches in Europe were built facing East with many stain glass windows on the East wall, in order to use the sun to light the church in the mornings. There weren’t many activities at night. As a matter of fact, the Sanctuary Light or the candle always hung above the tabernacle was the result of practical need long before it became a spiritual symbol. In the old days the use of the tabernacle was solely for the use of taking Communion to the homebound and sick. It was kept in the sacristy so people could come most any time to be able to take communion to the homebound. Remember there were no lights, but an easy fix was to simply place a candle near the tabernacle so people could find it. Since then, as the tabernacle began to be included in the sanctuary of the church this candle became a less practical need and more a symbol of Christ’s presence in the tabernacle. Getting back to those cold cold churches, how did people stay warm? Clearly it would have taken a lot more sacrifice to attend Mass and people had to dress warm in order to go to Mass. Long before vestments that priests wore and before they were so imbedded with allegory and symbolism, their origins were also born out of some very benign and practical needs. Basically before anyone thought to decorate them or add color they were originally coats or robes for simple warmth. Priests would typically wear similar coats and robes and these clothes began to be more uniformed among priests. Through the years, people got together and thought they should look the same and then decorations were added and then when heat was not so much of an issue, vestments took on much more symbolic and ritual significance. You might think, “good for the priest to be warm, but what about the people in the pews?” Well, people in the pews needed to simply wear their heavy coats, hats and mittens. Masses weren’t canceled for cold, cold and heat were simply things to endure. As we endure these cold days of winter, we can be thankful of all these simple modern expectations and realize how blessed we are to have these creature comforts in our church. During these

brutally cold days while we might feel uncomfortable walking from our cars to our warm churches, homes or business, remember how horrible it must be for those who are homeless and not nearly as lucky as we are. Run2win4Him James Kirby
