Page 3 DEAR ST. ELIZABETH PARISHIONERS:

This week celebrates what is known as The Epiphany of the Lord. We have learned to equate the Epiphany with the Magi. We have grown comfortable with several other ways such as “The Wise Men,” the “Astrologers from the East” or “The Three Kings.” These names have evolved from the human desire to clarify things because the word “Magi” is something we are unfamiliar with. So we hear from Matthew’s Gospel that they were following a star and of course to us, it would make sense that they would be astrologers. That definition doesn’t necessarily fit logically or historically, nor does kings nor does wise men. For what ever reason “kings” is the word we usually use when we talk about the Magi. We also are inclined to attach more details to this story and its characters. Just look at our manger scene. There are three magi, yet Matthew in his Gospel does not tell us how many Magi there are, yet we have forever settled on the number three as the final number of the Magi. Where are on earth did we come up with three? Of course since there were three gifts given to the child Jesus (gold, frankincense and myrrh), that must mean there were three magi. Not only that, but having any other number would likely have made the song “We Three Kings” not nearly as poetic and popular. There are even more details added to this story of the Magi. We have even come up with names for them, Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar. It is only human for us to make a beautiful and important story of our faith into something even more heartfelt and even romantic. Of course this is a wonderful thing to do as it makes the story of Jesus birth more personal and tangible. The problem is when we make these developed details actual facts or when we are shocked that some of these ideas and details we have attached to the stories of the bible are not actually in the bible. Scripture scholars bristle when they hear these non-biblical details added to bible and Gospel stories, but for the average person in the pew, there is a need to bring the story down to their level. It is like our “screen play” of a book that we are trying to make into our own more meaningful movie. We tend to do that with all of the stories from all four of the Gospels describing the birth of Jesus and make them into one big narrative simply overlooking the inconsistencies of doing so. It is important to remember that each Gospel writer had their own sources and their own motivation for writing their Gospel. The main concern for them is not accuracy or details. It is to convince you that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah. For us their audience we need to have the posture and openness to receive their convincing story of Jesus as the Son of God. One last thing about Matthew’s version. Matthew was concerned with emphasizing Jesus’ concern for the Jews and the Gentiles. What better way to do that than to emphasize the story of how the Gentiles (the Magi) were one of the first groups to find and recognize the Christ child . Perhaps today we can pray for the same due diligence as the Magi, to seek and to find the Christ Child in our lives. Run2win4Him James Kirby
