Page 3 DEAR ST. ELIZABETH PARISHIONERS: This Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday (Gaudete=rejoice or joy). We light the pink candle of the advent wreath and in some parishes the priest will wear rose vestments. Here at St. Elizabeth I think our finances can be better used for things other than buying vestments that are used twice a year (The other time would be the 4th Sunday of Lent called Laetare Sunday “Praise” or “give praise.”). On this Sunday we get to hear from John’s Gospel. John’s Gospel is often used on special occasions since it so unique and ascending. We are familiar with John’s Prologue, “In the beginning there was the Word, and the Word was God,” the very first words in his Gospel. Today John’s Gospel of Jesus picks up with the introduction to the character John the Baptist. While the theme is familiar the style is unique to John. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke are more straight forward with much more detail and succinct descriptions of events etc. John on the other hand is almost pure symbolism and literary devices. John’s Gospel is so different and seemingly so much more lofty than the others, John’s Gospel is symbolized by a soaring eagle. In today’s Gospel, we have this almost comical conversation between John the Baptist and the Levites and priests sent from Jerusalem. They ask him several different ways if he is the messiah or a prophet to which he answers “no.” To confuse them however, John then speaks directly quoting Isaiah making him sound like he actually is acting in the person of the Prophet Isaiah. He goes on to describe the Messiah (Jesus) who is coming and in fact is already present among them and the people. His job is to point out Jesus, to describe him and what he is going to do so when he does indeed come we may not miss him. Of course most of the people of Jesus’ time did miss him just as many still do and sometimes we miss Jesus’ presence now as well. Advent is about preparing ourselves to receive Christ, but also to recognize Jesus when he does make himself present to us. Just as John the Baptist attempted to prepare the people of his time to receive the Messiah and to recognize him back in the day, he still challenges us in the same way today. Run2win4Him James Kirby
