Page 3 DEAR ST. ELIZABETH PARISHIONERS: Only a day following Christmas we are faced with commemorating the memorial of the Martyr St. Stephen. There is little known about this saint other than what is reported in the Acts of the Apostles and on a few invalidated legends. According to Acts, Stephen like other Christians of the emerging Church were prone to make speeches and public displays of their new found faith in Jesus Christ. You can imagine how all this talk about Christ sat with the Jewish people as they sat in their own synagogues. Imagine is someone were to come into St. Elizabeth’s and began proclaiming the great truths of Deceased Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (whom many in Venezuela consider a saint and even more. Note: There is even a version of the Our Father adapted by replacing “father” with “Hugo Chavez”). How angry would we be at that person? To make matters worse for Stephen, he began to contradict and even critique the Jewish belief’s. It is important to remember that the early Jewish/Christians did not see themselves apart from their Jewish faith. They found Jesus as the progression of their Jewish faith rather than a whole different religion. Of course we would be livid at someone doing something like this in our church today. I can imagine strongmen, Keith Churchill and Denny Gruss grabbing this guy and dragging him out of the church much in the same way Stephen would have been. Stephen is dragged before the Sanhedrin and forced to explain himself before the Jewish leaders. Stephen continues in his blasphemy and his critique of the local Jewish people calling them “a stiff necked people” and also including some horrifying descriptions of Christ standing near the throne of God in heaven. This was too much and he was killed. Thus the first martyr of Christianity. This is a curious account to memorialize the day after Christmas. In a season full of mirth, joy and hope for peace, we are immediately confronted with the consequences of believing in Christ. Perhaps it is a bitter reminder of the weight and possible results of our celebrating Christ’s birth and our continued faith. I think it is also a reminder of how to be reasonable and sensitive to other beliefs and practices. I think Pope Francis would have a huge problem if any of us chose to go into a synagogue and proclaim Christianity as Stephen did. Faith in Christ has consequences and we need to face them and also be wise in how we express that faith as well.
